Dear Colleague, We are pleased to share this inaugural update outlining the important events that have transpired as a result of our collaboration between KLE and Thomas Jefferson University.

While this communication reviews some of the seminal activities jointly conducted over the past 6 months, we plan to update you more frequently during the coming year. The India Center is extremely proud of supporting more than 30 research grants as well as bilateral student and faculty exchanges. We are also committed to the joint development of new technology that holds significant promise for global application.

Both Ravi Bhooplapur and I share in the vision of Chancellor Prabhakar Kore for the expanded collaboration of research conducted at KLE University. For more than 22 years, we have been proactive partners providing joint strategic planning that has resulted in worldwide recognition for KLE, and their designation as a nodal research site by the World Health Organization.

“Implementing the WHO Labour Care Guide to reduce the use of Caesarean section in four hospitals in India: a pragmatic, stepped wedge, cluster randomized pilot trial” in collaboration with Burnet Institute, Australia; Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS), Buenos Aires – Argentina; and the World Health Organization with funding from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USA (November 2020 – October 2023) (# enrolments as on July 2022: 27,400) (Sample Size: 23,000)

We have just received the good news that our partnership has again been recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) allowing us to continue our important work in maternal child health research for the next 7 years.

Below is a condensed listing of major achievements that we can all take pride in – many of the results having been published in in prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of medicine and the Lancet.

Single oral dose of azithromycin 2 gm to prevent maternal peripartum infection and newborn sepsis in laboring women (A-PLUS Trial): Repurposing azithromycin as a neuro-protector; a neurodevelopmental follow-up secondary study in collaboration with Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, USA and University of Alabama, Birmingham, USA with funding from Thrasher Research Fund, USA (November 2022-March 2023) (# enrolments as on June 2023: 38) (Sample Size: 70)

Ravi and I, along with Chancellor Kore, recognize the importance of leveraging grant funding. Dr. Shweta Rao presented an oral presentation on “MANAGEMENT OF KIDNEY STONES IN PATIENTS WHO HAD RECEIVED CHEMOTHERAPY FOR CANCER” at the Annual Conference of Urolithiasis of USI on 14th & 15th May 2023. Won 3rd Prize in the best paper award category.

First KAHER – TJU Neurology grand rounds was organized on 26th May 2023 wherein Dr. Saroja A presented the case scenario of management of drug resistant neurotuberculosis complicated by neuropathy. The presentation was well received and was followed by active discussions regarding the treatment options, management of drug resistant tuberculosis and adverse effects of the conventional and the second line ATT. Dr. Sumanth Chava, 2nd year DM Neurology student of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, KAHER has been identified for the Inter-institutional post-graduate student exchange program. Mails have been sent in this regard to the officials at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, KAHER and TJU. The suggested period for the DM Neurology student’s visit to TJU is from October 2023 to November 2023 for a period of 3 weeks.

Pilot study on ‘Postpartum depression’ was conducted in collaboration with KLE University’s College of Nursing Sciences, Department of Psychiatry, JNMC and Thomas Jefferson University. One research paper has been published (Article attached) and one more paper has been submitted (Article attached).

Department of Psychiatry conducted series of meetings with Dr. John Lauriello, Professor & Psychiatrist, Thomas Jefferson University and his team, and identified ‘Comparison between socio-demographical variables associated with Suicide among USA and India’ as primary subject of collaborative research. It has also been discussed about participation of psychiatry postgraduate students and junior faculty of JNMC in the regular ‘Grand rounds’ conducted by TJU.
