A SWEET VISION

LIVING WITH WATER

Guangzhou NanFang Flour Mill Factory Park Renovation

Location:GuangZhou, CHINA

Area:1.84ha

Type:Individual Work

Time:11/2024

Mentor:Xinwei He

The design for the abandoned Southern Flour Mill site in Guangzhou reopens the mill to the people, providing protection for the industrial heritage, while creating lawns and ecological wetlands in the urban green space, providing multi-functional public spaces, allowing the industrial heritage to co-exist in harmony with the city.

GRASSHOPPER GENERATES PATHS FOR SURFACE DESIGN

MASTER PLAN

The design connects the historical heritage with the natural ecological space, using the preserved factory site to build lawns and ecological wetlands, and re-linking the blocked-off factories into the city's public green spaces.

OF GREEN SPACES

Clearly define the areas that are currently abandoned and cannot be reused, and reorganise the green spaces based on the preservation of the historical heritage. Reintegration of currently closed areas into the urban space, where the future factory will become a public recreational space of historical significance

INTERNAL SITE FILL AND EXCAVATION

We broke the concrete surface, recycled soil and stone, and combined with generative algorithms to create multifunctional activity spaces at different heights.

BIRD'S-EYE VIEW

The designed factory area is reintegrated into the city in the form of a "post-industrial" landscape, combining water, humanities and natural environmental conditions to awaken the

DECLINE IN SUGARCANE PRODUCTION IN ETHIOPIA,THE NILE, DUE

Sustainable Design for Sugarcane

Planting in Ethiopia

Location: Omorate, Ethiopia

Area:1300ha

Type:Individual Work

Time:05/2024

Mentor:Xinwei He

Due to the dry climate and poor soil, the sugarcane production in the Nile River of Ethiopia has declined. The design utilizes land rotation and inter-cropping to improve the soil fertility and creates a sustainable water irrigation system to increase biodiversity and the income of local farmers.

Sugarcane production has fallen by 48% over the past 70 years.

Sugarcane production has fallen sharply due to long-term intensive production resulted in decline in soil fertility, and extreme weather like drought and flooding

SUSTAINABLE MIXED-CROPPING PATTERNS

The design integrates local vegetables and crops, add peanuts and soybeans to restore soil fertility Implements a sustainable planting strategy of intercropping and land rotation to increase agricultural biodiversity and ensure crops and vegetables supply.

The design defines areas that are currently barren and can no longer be used, and implements fallow cultivation and crop restoration with green manure Integrating more grains and fruits and vegetables into the current monoculture sugarcane fields, adopting a mixed agriculture model. In the future, intermittent fallowing and rotations will be practiced on agricultural land to restore soil fertility.

Intercropping

SUSTAINABLE IRRIGATION SYSTEM (Dry Seasons

During the dry season, water stored during the rainy season will be reused Firstly, clean rainwater stored underground will be extracted with traditional water supply pipes for irrigation of farmlands. Secondly, it will be recharged by linking rivers and wetlands with water canals.

RAINWATER HARVESTING & PURIFICATION (Rainy Seasons

During the rainy season, rainwater flows through the wetlands and buffer zones, where it is naturally absorbed by the soil and plants and purified. Afterwards, it is conveyed through drainpipes to underground tanks for storage avoiding flooding and waterlogging disasters.

THE SWEET VISION

In sugarcane cultivation, a mixed agriculture model is adopted, intercropping soybeans and peanuts to restore soil fertility and increase agricultural species diversity to resist the threat of extreme weather

Utilize micro terrain and bioswale to naturally collect and purify rainwater, and increase irrigation systems to increase humidity

Roosevelt Island Waterfront and Green Spaces Renewal Design

Location:New York, USA

Area:59ha

Type:Individual Work

Time:09/2024

Mentor: Jennifer Birkeland (Professor of Cornell CALS)

Roosevelt Island is vulnerable to storm surges. The design softens the dikes and builds resilient waterfront to cope with flooding. Creating micro-topography in urban green spaces as rainwater harvesting and filters, protecting the urban microclimate and providing multi-functional public spaces, allowing the city to coexist harmoniously with the water.

The Light of Submarines

Monumental Space Design for Abandoned Submarine in Finland

Location:Tammela,Finland Area:4ha

Type:Individual Work Time:03/2024

Mentor:Lijuan Zeng

Finland has a long history of submarine industry. After the last submarine was abandoned, the memory of the submarine still wants to be preserved on the site. The design provides a space of memory in the form of submarine components, combined with plants, light and shadow to provide spaces for healing, viewing, and recreation on the water for the local people.
