MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

This show began with an ambition to put what I’ve learnt into practice; soon enough, sparse ideas manifested and snowballed into complete plays. Eventually the baby was born, but the nurturing was the toughest. I’m fortunate to have a team of devoted artists who shared my passion and gave this show, life. In the past, I had the privilege of standing on the stage with the sole responsibility of performing my character with integrity. Having my own production opened my eyes to the efforts that is required from working backstage to publicizing a show, making me appreciate my past productions even more. This production is a thank you note to those who supported me in this risky but fruitful journey that I’ve set foot on, and I wish to give more people the courage to make their first step.

—— Chun To Yeung♚ Currently studying drama and theatre arts in University of Birmingham. Studied IB Theatre in Victoria Shanghai Academy and received musical training in Yip’s Children’s Choir. Chun To performed various, often comedic roles in the past like Sebastian from ‘The Little Mermaid’, Scarecrow from ‘The Wiz’, Pinocchio from ‘My Son, Pinocchio’. In this production, Chun To wants to take on much more serious and darker roles, and give the audience a glimpse of how he perceives the world.

My time working with Hello To My Hollow Heart has been a remarkable process. This play is Chun To’s unique take on the darker parts of human nature; that underneath it all, we all simply hide behind a visage. As his director, I spearheaded the crusade to best represent his vision on stage. We hope that this play will allow you to question the decisions you make in your everyday life, as well as provoke a different way of thinking. Favorite credits include acting in Checkered Flags to Checkered Futures as well as directorial work in The Wiz. He currently studies Global Liberal Studies at New York University, and he wants to let you know avocados taste better with a plastic spoon.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRODUCER Some say darkness is the absence of light. Darkness, ruthlessness behaviours breed in our society. But if you look harder, you realize that there is light, and more importantly, everyone is capable of shedding light, if they are willing to be more selfless. ‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl’. (Extract from Matthew 5) This production is extraordinary as we managed to work together even when the team is constantly separated across continents. I truly enjoyed writing music for this showcase, and exploring the depths and perspectives of each play with the wonderful team— people of various professions. There will be more to come. — Amos Wong♘ Amos Wong is currently studying Composition and Electronic Music at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Participating in various competitions, Amos won awards such as the First Prize in the UNBOUND Flute Festival Composition Competition (Brisbane), and is a finalist in a Harp composition competition- The Future Blend Project 2017 (Warwick). Being a stage manager is a challenging and knackered test. I have never played nor cued a drama show, or have been a backstage crew.

In this production, defining exactly what a stage manager does is difficult as it includes a lot of tasks and responsibilities. To be honest, it is a bit terrifying in the control room alone, managing the lights and sound cues during the performance.

I would like to offer special thanks to Director Chun To Yeung, giving me the opportunity to be the stage manager of his cherished and daring production. It is my greatest pleasure to work with the cast and the production team. It is my honour seeing you all putting efforts from the first rehearsal till this day, and I really appreciate that. ‘Rome was not built in a day.’ Thank you for sparing time to our showcase.

MYSTERY

Howard Braun has disappeared for four days upon entering Joe’s Diner, no one knows where he’s gone. The detective compiles a series of eye-witness accounts into one coherent narrative which investigates what actually happened.

Unexpectedly, every person he interviews has a connection with the victim, making them more than simply witnesses, but suspects of the case. Seeing through the lies and secrets of the witnesses, the detective unravels a truth that he soon realises to be much darker than what he originally anticipates.

Unfair Sympathy On the streets of a busy metropolis, a lifeless beggar is joined by a beautiful young girl who is hiding from her parents.

This girl will invigorate him with love that has been taken away from him, educate him about the inherent cruelty of society, and forever shift his perspective in life.

Two players: Gaspare White, your standard teenage playboy and Sven Black, the old-fashioned romantic with their different tactics compete for the girl of their dreams. Like a game of chess, every move has to be precise and calculated, there’s little time for strategy, aggression is key. In this intense, heated battle, only one player can claim victory, so who will that be?
