Hence, it is an honor for us to present Gallop Gazette, our chef-d’œuvre, on our beloved publication’s diamond jubilee. MULTI LINGU ALISM EDUCATION BEYOND THE CLASSROOM WALLS

T

The learning of multiple languages entails having one language usually being more dominant than the others, but this does not equate to lack of utilization. With the language barrier being a common challenge people face, multilingual individuals are able to reach a higher level of language competence that they can apply for effective communication. Being knowledgeable is one thing, and expressing it is another.

Nowadays, companies value knowledge and technical skills but having a candidate who also has well-formed interpersonal skills still supersedes those who solely focus on their academics alone. The logic behind this is that if a skilled person is unable to clearly communicate their ideas and opinions, then they will not be able to make the most out of their abilities, which will be a difficulty on the part of the company. As early as now, students are given the opportunity to formally learn languages, and it is through these courses that they are able to improve and enhance a vital skill in this new generation of the work industry–communication.

surrounding personal development. If students take their lessons on languages seriously, more perspectives on the world will amplify their critical thinking. By the same token, their exposure to confronting diverse cultural backgrounds builds their adaptability to unfamiliar situations since they cultivate their values and ethics that strengthen who they are as an individual (Okal, 2014).

All things considered, the advantage of learning languages is not only limited to the communication aspect, as it extends to even affecting the mind, attitude, and behavior.

One of the most important effects of having multilingualism in educational curricula is how it helps preserve Filipino culture. From Spanish to Chinese, the Philippines has faced an onslaught of languages, many of which have shaped Filipino culture. This has forced Filipino identity to adapt to the foreign culture that currently dominates the country, rather than our own. In the present age, we no longer use Baybayin, the traditional alphabet used in the pre-colonial era, or even the Abakada alphabet our parents learned. However, the inclusion of Filipino in educational curricula changes this. Through the subject itself, students are exposed to a variety of Filipino literatures, histories, and

prayers. Beyond this, cultural events hosted in schools allow students to experience cultures from various places in the country. While one may argue that students are well-versed in Filipino culture from their upbringing at home, it is important to realize that the Philippines is composed of hundreds of indigenous languages and tribes. Schools give students equal opportunities to experience and live out diverse Filipino culture, and in turn, preserve it.

In a world that is constantly evolving and branching out more internationally than ever, multilingual education shapes students inside and outside of the classroom. Learning a language allows us to communicate more effectively, a skill essential in the job industry of today. Moreover, being introduced to other cultures from a young age helps us gain a wider perspective and generate more diverse ideas. Lastly, as Filipinos, it is our duty to live out our culture and preserve it for generations to come. Even if learning other languages may seem like a pointless chore, especially when it is not always applicable to daily life, it truly brings more advantages than disadvantages. As members of an everchanging society, it is our responsibility to be aware of other languages and cultures in order to become responsible citizens of the world.

LIVING WITH THE PANDEMIC

T

he past year and a half have been hectic for the world. The emergence of COVID-19 and its rampant spread across the globe has stirred up chaos and confusion in the lives of many. These months have drastically changed society and routine. As the world’s struggle with the virus persists, nobody knows what the future holds.

For students like ourselves, the pandemic has caused dramatic changes in our routines. This is quite similar to how a car ride through San Juan traffic turned into speeding to our Zoom links. The current virus appears as though it’ll be around for a while, so we asked three students from Xavier School San Juan to share their thoughts on the present and future of COVID-19.

When asked about how the implementation of online classes has affected the studies of Raphael Roberto Ang, 10E’s current class president, he stresses that it was difficult to grasp the extent of his capabilities in the first iteration of Xavier School E-Learning (XSEL) due to the simplified grading system.

Moreover, Raphael expresses that “physical classes [still triumphs] in terms of aspects such as socializing, collaboration, school events, and building mental balance between personal and school time.” Nonetheless, he recognizes some advantages that an online setup may provide, citing the availability of resources at home, and a personalized workspace among other examples.

With this experience, Raphael also considers

that dealing with the pandemic may be quite a chore for future generations. He says that “it is our initiative to take an extra step forward and prevent its progression. Once eradicated, not only will our nation be free of fears, despair, and worries, but will also be open to possible improved relations between one another while caring for the future of what our nation could be from our present actions.”

Arvin Lagamon, current president of 10G, argued that by treating this virus like the common cold or flu, the chances of it infecting everyone would increase exponentially, and it would continue to rob people of their jobs and leave them stranded, unable to arrive home.

FALSENESS VS. FACTUALITY

DISCUSSING PRIVATE SCHOOL STEREOTYPES

F

or decades, stereotypes have been used to put a fixed image on particular individuals.

It has become the social norm to assume and categorize people prior to knowing their identity. Whether positive or negative, these stereotypes can cause discourse and fear of judgment on the students’ self expression.

Private schools are no strangers to labels due to their reputation on their students. Private school students have a history of being infamous for their sense of superiority due to the prestige of their school and their financial capability. This kind of behavior caused people from an outsider perspective to judge and assume, prompting the ‘name-calling’ we know today. From elitist to preppy, over time, these terms have evolved and branched out with today’s culture to words like ‘broken Filipino speakers’ (Conyo), rich kids, and more.

But how do these terms really compare to the truth of how these students act in real life?

The most popular term in today’s internet culture with the youth is Conyo, or being unable to speak the Filipino language properly. This term likely comes from how private school students have a certain way of speaking that differs from each school, also known as diction and enunciation. With the rise of colonial mentality and social media in the past few years, the English language has been often used as the dominant language for communication globally which students find easier to speak in. Because of their upbringing, English has also been utilized as the primary language of instruction Page 12 | Gallop Gazette

the majority of their school years and, most likely, in their households. Because of this, students don’t really have the chance to speak the Filipino language unless they are outside, learning the Filipino subject, or if it’s one of their mother tongues at home. While this is mostly true, schools today have been promoting the Filipino language through Buwan ng Wika and learning the importance of our culture as well as the rich history we have to be proud of.

Hand in hand with being Conyo, private school students are snobbish or unfriendly. The connotation of being snobbish can stem from the students being generally appearing cold and unapproachable. Media has exaggerated its portrayal of private school students of being mean and superior. TV shows and movies have highlighted the difference in economic statuses with those outside of private schools, so viewers tend to associate fantasy with reality because most of them haven’t had a chance to get to know private school students in real life and how they really act.

In truth, they may be just in their own world, daydreaming or thinking about something.

Most students are actually generous and kind, or maybe shy, which is why they may seem distant, but they really just want to talk, but don’t know how to properly express it.

Private schools usually have a costly tuition fee, so naturally, many would think individuals who study here are privileged and well-off, as well as generally having it easier with the curriculum and connections. Being wealthy

is presumably the most popular assumption because the education there is hard to afford, which only people from the upper class can provide for their children. In reality, most of the students are not from the upper class but can be in the middle class and such. Parents set aside funds because they want to provide the high quality and diverse education that these private schools can offer while providing the basic necessities for their children. These students are fortunate to be able to go to a good school to learn and have greater opportunities as they graduate, thanks to their parents’ hard work.

All of us have the duty to create an inclusive environment with conversations about openness, honesty, and the threats of stereotyping. Not judging others and having respect are the keystones of change and exposing each other to a range of perspectives fosters a growth mindset to assess each and every one’s biases to recognize the effects of prejudice, thus keeping oneself accountable for one’s actions. Differences aside, it does not matter if you are from a private or public school. It is what you do with the opportunities and skills that you have to your advantage, as well as how you adapt to life after graduating and finding a job.

you admire can produce a positive mindset and avoid misconceptions that have evolved and exaggerated the truth about private school notions. Our school background does not define us, but it is the choices and hard work we put into the present that will shape our future.

TEN YEARS

OF XAVIER SCHOOL NUVALI

W

hat is the year 2021 for you?

For many, it is another year of online distance learning, staying confined in a house with our families, socially distancing from our friends. For the seniors, there’s a year left before we officially graduate from senior high school and embark on our first chapter of adulthood. Though for all of us students and faculty, most notably, it is Xavier School Nuvali’s Tenth Year Anniversary.

A lot has definitely happened and changed since the implementation of XSEL in the two years we’ve been using it.

We have encountered ups and downs, the good we like to share and celebrate with other people, and the bad we choose to hide while we stay in front of the screen. Like any other bumpy road, we should not give up and remember we aren’t alone. Though at times, our daily routines may feel repetitive. We just don’t realize it, but our growth is there.

Let’s not forget to stop and reflect from time to time to see how far we’ve gotten. Give yourself a pat on the back (or an applause!).

In light of this, I interviewed our school principal, Mrs. Arlene T. Choo last November 3, 2021, to share with us her highlights and sentiments about the progress of our school in the last ten years.

What was something that the XSN community did, during the 2 years of XSEL, that you loved?

What I love about XSEL itself is that the teachers, students, and other members of the school community--for example, the parents– practiced resilience. The teachers had a very short period for in-service, teacher training, and they had to learn everything they needed to learn in almost more than two months. We were also working on the curriculum audit because we had to decongest it for XSEL. We cannot just translate everything online, and therefore we had to take into consideration the context of the students, the context of the families, the experiences that they’re having in this pandemic. I’m very proud of how our teachers prepared given the limited time they had. I think we delivered one of the best online distance learning experiences, especially last school year. The teachers were able to ensure quality learning and the students were able to adapt very quickly, more than how we expected they’ll be performing.

and we housed the medical frontliners of QualiMed. We were able to assist several public schools in Laguna through our MusiKapwa project for the senior high school.

Without saying anything, we found ourselves doing a lot of good to the bigger community.

What are you most proud of when it comes to XSN’s growth?

I’m very proud that after 10 years, our student population increased tenfold since we opened in 2012. We know that it’s not just about the numbers, therefore it also means and says a lot about the confidence of the community in Xavier School Nuvali. If XSN didn’t have any impact on its students, to their parents, they will not share anything about XSN with their friends. They are able to confidently share with other parents about our positive energy and how collaborative the school is.

With our alumni, they really say thank you to Xavier School Nuvali because it prepared them for the real world–the real life. This pandemic taught us that more than the learning that takes place in the classroom–which is also very important–it is the learning that takes place outside of the classroom that teaches the life skills needed to survive in it. There will be more authentic and meaningful teachings outside the confines of the classroom to prepare our students for life. For XSN, it is to create more learning opportunities and safe learning spaces where students will feel respected and valued as individuals in their own rights. For our excellent teachers, as our way of moving forward, a bigger community of professional teachers will be involved in community outreach and teacher training, sharing what they know with educators outside of Xavier School Nuvali. I think we will continue to evolve so that XSN can continue to be a school for others. It’s our obligation to give back and give service.

Not to change but maybe what we could do more, which are learning opportunities outside of the classroom learning–to become a relevant school so that learning will be more relevant, most especially to SHS. I think relevant learning opportunities outside of the classroom are really needed.

For the younger kids, I would want them to play more because there is a lot of learning that can take place in playing.

Which annual school event do you look forward to the most?

I always look forward to Carol Fest the most. It’s the one school activity that really brings families together. When we

have Carol Fest, the parents are here, the students are there, even the lolos and lolas, and sometimes the titos and titas. It’s an activity that brings the Xavier School families together for a common cause. Eventually, it even became a fundraiser for the XSETF (Xavier School Educational Trust Fund).

For me, being there in Carol Fest, there’s a certain warmth and familiar feel to the event, and maybe it’s also because of the Christmas spirit. It is a celebration of the community.

What is your message to our graduating seniors, the pioneer batch?

Like what St. Ignatius said, “Go set the world on fire.” With your passions, you’re equipped with competence in terms of knowledge and skills. Your heart has been transformed because of your Xavier Jesuit education.

Go out there and be a light to others, and continue to let your light shine.Your teachers and I look forward to you coming back to Xavier School Nuvali--the day you return and are able to tell us, “This is who I am right now.”

We will be able to see that you are persons of service, persons who have committed themselves to be of service to others.

Whatever you’ve learned from Xavier School Nuvali, don’t forget it and bring it wherever you go. Be the best version of yourself.

Whatever that will be, we will always be very proud of you and there’s always a second home that you can go back to.

One interview and one article are not enough to share how much we’ve seen and grown in the past ten years. Nevertheless, an enormous thank you to the whole school community-students, parents, faculty, and staff-- for being a loving and supportive family and for truly being men and women for others, finding ways to be the light in the dark. THE IW EXPERIENCE

AND POVEDANS’ PROJECT ESSENTIALS

A

fter more than a year of attending classes online, it’s no wonder that students miss the happenings of the face-to-face setting. From walking around the school, eating in the canteen with our friends and learning from our teachers not through a screen to attending various school events and activities, if there is one big thing that feels different when done online, it’s school projects. Balitaan, group presentations, and, most especially for Povedans, Individual Work (better known as IW), are even more difficult to accomplish since we can only do so much on our computer screens.

Non-Povedans might be wondering, “What is IW?” Well, IW is something that is unique to Povedans. If you have relatives or friends from this school, you probably hear them mention the constant stress it gives them. Accomplishing all IW cards before time runs out is truly a challenge, a matter of testing your time management, critical thinking, and creativity skills.

Here’s how it works: you need to accomplish five activity cards in the span of one session, which is around four weeks. Povedans have 8 sessions in one school year. Ideally, on the very first day of each session, the student must visit each IW classroom to copy the task written on the activity card, as well as the materials or research needed in order to complete the task. This is known as “IW Shopping.”

Don’t be fooled by the “four weeks” we have, though. Oftentimes, four weeks isn’t enough.

Most of the cards are long, challenging, or require a lot of effort to accomplish. Not only that, but our IW activity card grades hold one of the highest percentages in our report card. Feel the pressure yet?

It’s all made up for by the feeling of success you get after you have completed your IW accomplishment card. Get all the teachers’ signatures on it by the end of the session and you receive a sticker! I remember during the last day of this one session, we had an earthquake drill during IW time, and you could see the look of panic and stress in the faces of everyone since barely anyone had finished her cards. But don’t worry, all was good, since the school announced that they’ll be giving us one more day to finish our cards.

IW is just one of the many interesting and educational activities in Poveda. There also exist class presentations, school projects, and outreach activities. Most of which wouldn’t be complete without the help of a few materials along with the touch of Povedan creativity. So, what better way to help you envision it than to go shopping?

The Typical Povedan’s Shopping List (Disclaimer: This shopping list may vary per Povedan) 1. Illustration boards - These handy boards are mostly used in our Social Studies class for the purpose of Balitaan, but they can also be used as props for skits and plays- as signs or backdrop windows.

2. Recycled paper (including brown paper bag) and colored paper - Mostly used for IW purposes as the base or as an add-on decoration to the work. To quote the famous Elle Woods from Legally Blonde (2004) it really “gives it a little something extra.”

3. Cartolina, Manila Paper, Crepe Paper, Oslo Paper, Sticker Paper, and Bond Paper - Why don’t we throw in some more paper varieties? These are just few among the types of paper Povedans usually use in group works or as materials for decoration for major class and batch activities. When creativity accounts for a huge part in your final grade, you really need to give your all in the aesthetics department!

These kinds of papers are very handy in accomplishing quizzes, seatworks, essays, drafts, and many more. Be sure to buy some extra, though there’s always somehow a seatmate who forgot her paper at home.

5. Coloring Materials - Tell me, what do you think is better: a set of Crayola crayons or Faber Castelle colored pencils? Or maybe it’s the ever handy Crayola Supertips Markers that add light to works of only black and white? If you decide to buy one thing from this list, it should definitely be any of these, as these are the most versatile supplies that you can use in any project!

6. Paint and Paintbrushes (Watercolor and Water Brushes) - Paint and paintbrushes are used in major and big projects, most especially in class or batch activities that call for decorations. The latter is more handy to bring and carry along, and is useful in accomplishing activities such as posters, postcards, and IWs. 7. Writing Materials - Hold up, almost forgot to include these! How can you write without writing materials?

SHANG-CHI THE MCU’S RETURN TO FORM

he Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been praised by critics as one of the best Marvel standalone movies, and upon watching the film, it is not hard to see why. Shang-Chi, as the first MCU movie with an Asian lead, was masterfully made as seen in its excellent fight choreography, powerful story and character moments, and the versatility of its soundtrack.

Choreography at the Forefront Shang-Chi’s choreography is probably the strongest out of all MCU movies. Mixing martial arts with fantastical weapons and characters, Shang-Chi’s action scenes are showered with meaning, emotion, and cathartic moments.

In order to show the budding romance the two characters, their fight seems synchronized and almost like a dance. The two even form a yin-yang at some point, showing, through amazing choreography, how the two complement each other.

There are several other action scenes throughout Shang-Chi that highlight important aspects of characters or their stories. While there are many moments when the story takes the forefront, the action is able to supplement it in a way that is memorable for the audience.

Many action scenes are choreographed in a three-act structure, with intensity peaking and then dying down at noticeable points and with each act having their own identity.

Strong Characters, Strong Story The standout character of Shang-Chi has to be Wenwu, Shang-Chi’s father, played by Tony Leung. Leung gives a powerful performance as a grieving husband. He carefully balances aspects of mise-en-scène popular in the Chinese and Hong Kong film markets, including excellent martial arts choreography, with signature MCU characteristics such as Wenwu’s several quips. He is certainly one of the MCU’s strongest villains, especially considering that the audience never doubts the character’s motivations throughout the story.

Simu Liu gives an excellent performance as Shang-Chi. Not only is he charismatic and hilarious, but he is also able to add emotion to his character. For a kung-fu master wielding ten magical rings, he, and, by extension, Awkwafina’s character Katy, are surprisingly relatable as Asians living abroad. While the movie could have explored Shang-Chi as someone stuck in between two worlds some more, it was definitely interesting to see his story unfold.

The first two acts of the movie show how great

Shang-Chi was. The first act involves Shaun, Shang-Chi’s name in the United States of America, discovering a letter from his sister in Macau. He wears a necklace that was given to him by his mother. In San Francisco, members of the Ten Rings organization, controlled by Wenwu, attempt to steal this necklace for some mysterious reason. This act was very grounded and shows off the movie’s amazing choreography as it starts to build the relationship between Shang-Chi and Katy.

The second act of the movie mostly takes place in Macau and the Ten Rings compound.

This act provides some of the funniest moments in the movie while also developing its lore and story. It introduces new characters and some interesting cameos. While the first act was very unique for a Marvel movie, the second act strays slightly towards the Marvel formula, though it definitely pulls this off well.

A Stellar Soundtrack In addition to the flamboyant fight scenes and praiseworthy acting the film had to offer, it was also accompanied by an impressive soundtrack. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album, produced and curated by pan-Asian powerhouse 88rising, was able to deliver the much-needed punch in order to match its namesake’s energy. Being both moving and evocative also allowed the album’s selection of songs to wonderfully intertwine with crucial parts of the film.

It was the action-packed “Run It” by DJ Snake, Rich Brian, and Rick Ross that set the mood for Shang-Chi’s showdown with Ten Rings affiliates on the bus. By marrying its electrifying melody with an explosive drum pattern, the song effectively gave rise to a tense atmosphere that perfectly fits the scene. The beat even matches up with certain parts of the fight choreography, making it a lot more satisfying to watch.

Swae Lee and Jhené Aiko’s “In The Dark” sounds like something that would be playing on the radio on a late night drive, and that’s exactly what it was used for in the movie. While Shang-Chi and Katy cruised around Macau in a taxi, having the song in the background easily highlighted the city’s vibrancy.

The song’s upbeat tune complemented shots of its neon-lit casinos, along with glimpses into the Macanese nightlife.

Unlike most of the other songs used throughout the run of the movie though, Anderson Paak’s “Fire In The Sky” opted to use live acoustic instruments instead of their electronic counterparts. Laid-back and groovy, the song accompanying the end credits sequence was definitely a breath of fresh air after two hours of action and drama.

Although it admittedly lacks cohesiveness as an album, the soundtrack’s versatility made it the perfect musical accompaniment to Marvel’s first Asian-led film. The eclectic mix of rap, R&B, and even K-pop tracks from the album was a pleasant auditory treat and added a whole new layer of character to the movie, an accomplishment the predominantly-Asian team behind the project should be proud of.

Indeed, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is one of Marvel’s most compelling origin stories to date. Its graceful choreography, dynamic plot line, and diverse soundtrack proved to be an instant recipe for success. Prior to the pandemic, Marvel movies were released in regular intervals. Due to the pandemic, however, this pattern has been halted. ShangChi is certainly a worthy film to herald a hopeful return to normalcy as we start to see Marvel movies hit the theaters once again.

A POVEDAN’S GUIDE

TO COMMON SPOTS AND POVEDAN SLANG

There are so many common slang words used here and there, but have you ever heard phrases like “What time is time?” or “Are you crossing?”. These phrases may sound grammatically incorrect and incomplete, but for Povedans, phrases like these are just known as everyday slang.

Every school has its own phrases and slang that are only understood by its students and their peers. Here is an official and exclusive guide to “Povedan Slang”, accompanied by the common spots they were often used in during the pre-pandemic times. What better way is there to learn more about these students in yellow checkered uniforms?

Before the pandemic, teachers used to announce that there would be a quiz or task, and then they would give students a few seconds to procure the material needed for the said assignment. Since using websites and forms were not commonly used on campus, the infamous essential of intermediate pad paper was something students typically required and used. Oftentimes, Povedans never have the correct pad-paper size at hand, but luckily, there is always that one classmate who unsuccessfully, sneakily tries to tear a piece of their correct size of padpaper. Key word “unsuccessfully”; because students always find a way to find and ask that one ill-fated student for pad-paper, making them have to hand out sheets of paper to pretty much the rest of the class.

Classrooms

“Do you have one-fourth? Onehalf? One-whole?”

Although these phrases sound like somebody asking for fractions, do not fret!

Numbers and fractions are not involved. This is just the way students ask for a specific size of intermediate pad paper in the classroom.

You must be thinking “Dengue? How can someone ‘wear’ dengue?”. In Poveda, there is something called an “Anti-Dengue Attire” that consists of wearing a Poveda shirt paired up with jogging pants or jeans and white rubber shoes; a popular attire that many people wear whenever they don’t feel like parading around in a long skirt. Many teachers constantly remind students that the proper name for the attire is “Anti-Dengue Attire”, not just “Dengue Attire”, but nevertheless, if you hear Povedans asking each other if they are “wearing dengue”, it is just their way of asking if they are wearing a shirt and pants instead of the checkered uniform.

Bathrooms The Peace Sign.

This is not specifically “slang” per se, but it is a symbol that Povedans use to ask their teacher for permission to go to the bathroom mid-discussion.

During Spanish class, however, they have to raise the question of “Puedo usar los servicios por favor?”.

The bathroom is a common spot where Povedans can run into each other.

Especially because of the designated bathrooms for each batch, it is easy to find batchmates or classmates in the bathroom at the same time as you.

During the designated periods for IW, students find themselves moving across classrooms, hallways, or going to the library for research. Even when there is a clock nearby, Povedans still ask each other “What time is time?”; a phrase that means that the students are asking each other how much time they have left to keep working on their task. Although it sounds grammatically incorrect, it is a famous line that is rooted into the vocabulary of Povedans.

Canteen “Do you have load?”

The canteen is a common spot Povedans love. They could go here in the morning, during recess or lunch, or in the afternoon, after classes end. One of the main reasons the canteen is a favorite spot is because of the several different stalls that sell different kinds of food, food which can be bought by the load in their IDs. In Poveda, there are loading stations where you have to load your money into your ID to be able to purchase the foods in the canteen. When the lines for the stations are long, you would probably hear this phrase being asked among friends whenever they need to borrow somebody else’s ID to buy food.

Library “What time is time?”

“IW”, which stands for Individual Work, is something that all Povedans go through until the end of Junior High School. Every day, the knowledge, creativity, and time management skills

Robinsons Galleria “Are you crossing?”

Robinsons Galleria, also referred to as “Galle”, is one of the most iconic hangout spots of Povedans outside of school. “Are you crossing?” is a phrase that does not need any more explanation; to Povedans, it is a question of whether or not you are going to the mall right across Poveda. Here, you can probably find Povedans hanging out in different stores and restaurants, such as Chili’s,

Starbucks, Chatime, National Bookstore, Tom’s World, and more. There are many spots to choose from, but a lot of Povedans who go to this mall probably memorize the map of Galle like the back of their hand.

These favorite spots and phrases are considered to be “normal” and “natural” for Povedans, although, because of the online set-up, some of these have definitely changed. Regardless, Povedans will always be able to find new common spots and slang that they can create and share with one another. All of these are surely things that unify Povedans as a school and community.

A BETTER TOMORROW ACTION AMONG WOVEN SPIRITS

B

esides also being the title of a Wu-Tang Clan album (which definitely is not a coincidence), John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow has been the Rosetta Stone for all blockbuster action cinema since its release. For myself, however, it was my first John Woo movie and my second Hong Kong film–the first being Ringo Lam’s City on Fire (1987), which was itself created to ride the trend of heroic bloodshed spawned by A Better Tomorrow.

At first, it underwhelmed me because it felt like every generic action movie with big explosions and hail of bullets—a genre of action now known as gunfu, which I like except for the dreaded melodrama occupying the spaces between the action.

However, it feels like every generic action movie without being any of them in particular because it has been the core template of

blockbuster action cinema for decades now. That phenomenon is more obvious in Hong Kong cinema, where A Better Tomorrow originates from. Instantly after its breakout success, everyone in the Hong Kong movie industry had to replicate it, and some like Ringo Lam were successful at this, with their own twists on what was now the heroic bloodshed genre, while others were considerably less successful and have now been mostly forgotten. The only thing certain about those movies is that 90% of them probably starred Chow Yun-fat. Even renowned arthouse director Wong Kar-wai’s directorial debut As Tears Go By (1988) was a heroic bloodshed movie, and it’s easily his most forgotten movie (not counting My Blueberry Nights (2007)) because of how much closer it is to A Better Tomorrow and its countless copycats than to any of his more signature films like

Chungking Express (1994) or In the Mood for Love (2000). Particularly, heroic bloodshed is defined by men struggling through violence while trying to keep their promises of brotherhood to each other. Movies with these themes are still being made in Hong Kong, most popularly by Johnnie To. Similar films in America share the themes of heroic bloodshed, too, like Michael Mann’s Heat (1995). In fact, Mann himself shares a lot of similarities in storytelling and conflict with John Woo.

vaporising everything into their most basic components and only leaving behind hellfire and grief. Of course, no art is meaningful without the inclusion of elements from the artist’s own lived experience. What John Woo includes is the memory of his own father, who sounds like the heroes of his own movies.

“What carried over to Hollywood was less the themes of brotherhood and sacrifice, and more the action itself. “ In America, action movie heroes killing hordes of bad guys with guns were always large body-building men like Sylvester Stallone in Rambo II (1985) and Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall (1990). In the most dominant gun action movies of Westerns, the action was always in quick bursts inspired by the sword fights of Japanese samurai epics. It is these Westerns–especially those by Sam Peckinpah–rather than the macho-man movies of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, that would inspire the guns wielded by his movies’ heroes, and the build of these Western heroes would also be the build of the heroes of heroic bloodshed. China’s signature wuxia and kungfu movies all restricted their combat to handto-hand, conventional weapons like nun-chuks and staffs, and improvised weaponry. Even in films set in time periods with guns as a norm, people just weren’t fighting with guns. No one knew how to make gunfighting fit the cinema of China until John Woo. He combined the choreography of Chinese martial arts cinema with the bombasticism of American cinema to create his own style of theatrical violence composed of bright explosions, geysers of lood, slow-motion actors flying through the air to dodge bullets and return fire themselves, and bullets tearing the environment apart,

your country, to your family and friends.”

Woo’s father passed away when he was only sixteen years old, so the fathers (or parents, really) of Woo’s heroes are likewise always absent. In A Better Tomorrow, the second act is prompted by the death of the heroes’ father, so they’re left to pick up whatever is left and try to fulfill themselves without any more guidance. Once the dust has settled, at the end of every heroic bloodshed romp, it must always be asked, “Were the characters’ loyalties to each other kept intact or not? Either way, what did it cost? Is there anything left?”

When everything else about A Better Tomorrow has already been copy-pasted to oblivion, all it has seemed to have retained is its answer to those questions of the genre it birthed.

After the heroes’ loss of their father, of their best friend, of their hopeful future, all that is left to bind them together is their grief for a sentimental past. It isn’t so much about what they had gained but rather about what they hadn’t been unlucky enough to lose. It’s a tragedy, but it has kinship to maintain the wholeness of woven fragile spirits. At least they can shamelessly admit their fragility both to themselves and especially each other; something we can try to do alongside them.

s many would already know, life changed a lot with the pandemic. The days of heading to school with friends and going out with family were replaced with long days stuck at home, staring at a lit screen. At first we thought it would all blow over quickly, but days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. Eventually, we exhausted the joys of an extended vacation, and it left us more time to question ourselves: our past mistakes, our present situation, the missed opportunities, and whether or not we can handle the future.

The dread continues to build up within us, though we try our best to keep going in spite of everything.

ut sometimes, things can be just too much, and you need something to take the edge off. Music is a great tool for that purpose. Anyone can enjoy the marvels music brings.

You may not understand musical theory or even the language the lyrics contain, but it can strike your heart and soul all the same. Whether we’re in quarantine or not, music has always been available for our perusal. Whether the soothing sounds of music deliver a sense of comfort or take your mind to a distant, utopian land, it can keep you away from the deafening cacophony of daily life, even though it’s only for a little while.

NIGHTFALL

MIDNIGHT JOKE

On a late summer night, I decided to watch the movie Drive. I heard this was a cool movie about a getaway driver. I figured it would help keep my boredom at bay given my interest in cars, but the movie turned out to be more than just a simple popcorn flick with how deep it felt. Of all the great moments in the movie, the one that really stuck with me was the opening credits. It only shows the main character driving around aimlessly at night as “Nightcall” plays, yet, strangely, it was mesmerizing. Whenever I hear that song, I think about that scene and how hypnotic it felt. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do— to just drive with no destination in mind. I’ve felt that it was a great way to enjoy my interest in cars while taking my mind off some issues, and after watching that scene, I feel that “Nightcall” is the perfect song for it.

Whenever I listen to it, I find it easy to get lost within its trance, wishing I was out there and not here. Maybe it’s the harsh and hypnotic chords of the synthesizer that makes everything feel surreal, or perhaps it’s the sentimental feel of the robotic vocals that captures the feeling of a late night drive that needs no destination.

City Pop is one of my favorite genres, as it captures the bright and hopeful feeling tied to Japan in the 80s, wherein the economic boom at the time meant that life was good and the future was looking great. While there are numerous songs and albums such as Junko Ohashi’s Telephone Number or Tatsuro Yamashita’s Big Wave that capture that feeling and provide a delight for the ears, few do so as well as Takako Mamiya’s 1982 album Love Trip. My favorite song from the album (and from the genre as a whole) is “Mayonaka no Joke,” as it feels quite relaxing and reassuring. Even though you don’t understand the song, the jazz sound of the brass instruments and the smooth and soothing vocals makes the song feel classy, like something you’d hear while enjoying a fine drink in a fancy cafe of a bustling city. Listening to the song is like a relaxing night out in town where the dreams of a bright future come true or watching the sunset by the window of a finedining restaurant in a highrise with a drink in hand.

I LOVE THE NIGHT

STILL FEEL

I discovered this song with random luck after reading through a discussion thread about onehit wonders with underrated discographies, and I’m thankful to that user who commented for introducing me to this song. What I find unique about it is that it has a melancholic yet comforting feel to it, making it feel fitting for either staring at the ceiling from bed late at night or watching the beautiful night sky along with someone you hold dear. Listening to the song feels like a hug when you really need it, or the feeling of a faint but genuine smile after some rough times.

The haunting guitar riff accompanying the lowpitched vocals through the verses captures that feeling of despair, like when you’re just sitting down and staring at nothing, head tilted to downwards and supported by the fist on your cheek. It’s uncomfortable, but you feel too distraught to move. When the chorus comes, the vocals feel a little more hopeful, and the backing vocals make you feel like your friends are with you. You turn your head and look up at the ceiling with a faint smile as the song trails to end, knowing that things will get better.

Randomly searching for good music to try out, I stumbled upon “still feel.” by half•alive. I never really heard of the song before, but it truly surprised me when I gave it a try and eventually ended up as one of my favorites. With a groovy and emotional melody, “still feel.” truly makes you feel alive. Whenever I listen to this song, my stress seems to disappear and I can’t help but move along with its progressively energetic tune. I would also often listen to it during study sessions, as it is greatly effective at helping me power through my textbooks. Furthermore, as the song’s theme alludes to, it can make you realise that things may not be as hopeless as it seems. Especially relevant to these times, the song often reminds me that we can still try to find meaning and hope within our predicaments and try to make the most out of it. Whenever you’re feeling down, or just bored, you can give this amazing song a try.

“Opportunities” by Pet Shop Boys serves as a very special song to me. I used to always listen to this song with my family, whether in the car rides back home or on the speakers at the house, and this tradition continues even during the coronavirus pandemic. Conversing with my parents with the song playing in the background is one of those seemingly mundane yet also memorable experiences.

Another thing I like about music is that you can enjoy it with your loved ones, and for our family this is one of the songs that all of us actually enjoy listening to. We all have quite different tastes in music, so it’s quite rare to find a common denominator. I also didn’t expect to like this ‘80s song this much, as it came from a different time period of different musical tastes, but I guess this also demonstrates the timelessness of music.

There’s something about music, regardless of the year it was released in, that can enrich and even prompt these shared moments of joy with family and friends. These moments can become significant experiences for many of us.

I was actually not fond of this song when I first listened to it, as it seemed too “wacky” for my tastes. Eventually though, the unique song grew on me and became one of my favorites.

Aside from music being timeless, this song also demonstrates how they can be beyond language barriers. Even if I may not completely understand the lyrics of the song, the melody, the use of instruments, among others, more than make up for it. “Oddloop” and its wacky vibes definitely helped me get through the pandemic. Whenever I was bored during the quarantine, listening to the song’s catchy tune and quick drum patterns helped add a touch of fun. It made me more eager to explore and try out new things. If you want to find a cure to your boredom, try listening to “Oddloop.” Perhaps you may find it quite strange at first, but trust me, the song can grow on you. So, don’t give up on it so easily.

school year has passed since we have started to go to online classes. We were introduced to XSEL or Xavier School E-Learning due to the circumstances brought about by the pandemic. Now, we are currently in our second year of XSEL, also known as XSEL 2.0, still going on and striving for authentic learning, student engagement, and collaborative learning amidst the constraints that we are facing.

It was never easy to break the traditional physical face-toface classes and transition to Online Distance Learning (ODL). We can always see or hear the rants of the students

about how draining and tiring ODL is given the heavy workloads and its impact on our mental health. Yes, we may be together in online classes, but we can’t change the fact that we are physically alone. This feeling of being “disconnected” makes us less motivated to attend online classes.

He then added that he was thankful for the workshops and seminars provided by XSN to support them with the necessary knowledge before starting ODL. Some positively took the transitioning just like Mrs. Lorna Tayag, a grade 2 teacher from Xavier School Nuvali. She said that it was a huge learning experience for them as a teacher to undergo ODL. Though they said that they’re still having difficulties with regards to interacting with their students and they see that as a point of improvement.

Some of us don’t have access to quality connections and some are just using data connections to attend online classes. During our interview, the teachers expressed their stress when encountering a problem like this. They would find ways in order to go back to the class like using a backup data connection.

Online Distance Learning is monotonous in a way, the connection between the students and teachers is not the same. It feels like we’re stuck in a loop where we just keep on functioning based on routine. That’s why despite having to learn inside our homes, our teachers do their best to make us feel connected with our classmates and also with them.

Take it from Mr. Kim Sejera who said that to make his students feel connected and engaged in his lessons is to stay curious about them; He tries his students’ interests, whether it be K-Pop or mobile games. He engages them in group works wherein their creativity and intelligence are showcased. Activities like this pique their interests and form relationships among students.

For Ms. Ina Delgado, a Science teacher from Xavier School Nuvali, in order to effectively connect and engage students is to know their language.

For Mr. Luke Santos, creating a space where the students wouldn’t get bored was the strategy. He realized that streamers couldn’t physically see their audiences, but they still managed to engage them during their stream. So just like that, he had adapted that streamer vibe during his classes.

However, for a grade 2 teacher like Mrs. Lorna Tayag, a different approach should be made. She believes that kids are one of the most affected by this transition. They should be making interactions with each other at this young age, but due to the pandemic, they are forced to sit in front of their gadgets. So what she does is to give them ample time, during breaks or transition periods, to talk with their classmates in order to improve their conversational skills.

It was an extra effort for teachers, but they’re willing to do it in order to make online distance learning a lessened burden for all.

We all miss seeing and interacting with each other and that’s what the teachers think is lacking in online classes; the bond and connection of the people inside the school, the physical interactions and responses that they get when they are inside the classrooms.

Even though they wanted to meet us already, their thoughts about limited faceto-face classes are still about everyone’s safety.

For Ms. Ina Delgado, she said that the XSN Community is one of the big support to them as they’re really extending their help to them in different ways that they can. Mr. Kim Sejera showed how grateful he was to the community, especially to their department head who was always there to help them.

SYDNEY TORRENUEVA A DIVE INTO A MODEL STUDENT’S LIFE

A Day in the Life

(Marco): I had taken part in a summer internship program at the office of Sen. Francis Pangilinan from March to April of 2021. It was during this time that I met Sydney Torrenueva, a student leader who left me with a strong impression — I remember him best for his unabashed admiration for musical artist Frankie Pangilinan who had performed during the program’s culminating activity in a virtual room with hundreds of other interns.

The much accomplished Sydney manages his time simply by creating timelines and to-do lists. Many ask how he uses such well-worn techniques and yet is still able to give his all as a full-time student and a leader in the organizations he is involved in.

Just basing on my frequent chats with Sydney in breakout rooms, I could sense something extraordinary about him. My impression was proven true when I saw pictures of his many academic and extracurricular engagements on his Instagram account. He received the ABS-CBN medal of excellence in the twelfth grade and the Outstanding Student award multiple times, alongside a scholarship, from Bicol University. To name a fraction of his involvements, he is a part of his university’s Honor Society, Debate Society, Red Cross Youth Council, and UNESCO Club. He was also recognized as the Youth Power Outstanding Student of the Year in the 2021 Asia Pacific Luminare Awards.

Sydney agreed to be interviewed by me and my colleague, Jaden Lim. Our hour-long discussion covered several aspects of his journey as a student leader, and gave clarity to how student achievers like Sydney maintain such high standards of performance in all that they do.

“I don’t think there is a secret ingredient.

I know that it’s just a part of who I am to bring out the best in me…because it’s all a part of [my] learning and growing.”

He discloses that success is achieved by seeking personal growth and development much more than recognition in competitions and conferences. With such a fervent and limitless drive, Sydney is able to give his best in each and every endeavor.

His personal needs had to adjust with the pandemic when he was suddenly prohibited from meeting up often with friends. Since the shift, Sydney has made the best out of his free time by enjoying a book, watching a documentary or film, or meeting new people from around the world through webinars, all of which keep him productive and mentally fit.

“Even if we are in a pandemic, it [shouldn’t] mean our dreams and goals will stop.”

How did he start becoming active, and where does he hope to end up?

who couldn’t find a stable job, who were deprived of their rights, and the youth who couldn’t access opportunities to prepare for the real world. However daunting the question seemed, Sydney took small steps during his high school years by being active in conferences and student movements.

Currently in his final year as a political science major of Bicol University, Sydney represents his school and country in writing and debate competitions, in prestigious local and international youth organizations on sustainable development, empowerment, and health, and in internships for government officials.

“I’m the eldest child, and my parents also expect a lot of things from me. It’s not a [source of] bad pressure — it’s a [source of] good pressure because my parents said that whatever I achieve, they will always be proud of me.”

Through his family’s unconditional support, Sydney has immersed himself in many fields.

From all his experiences, he defines a good leader to be grounded to one’s principles without compromise. He mentions that many current leaders of the Philippines either act unconscionably or undermine their own values when tempted.

What does being a leader mean to him?

Sydney shares that ever since his elementary years, being of service to others through leadership positions was natural because he wanted to support his family in the long run and be an example for his siblings. But not many people know that being the eldest child was a great source of motivation for him.

He advocates for a stronger stance on international relations and more direct foreign policy engagement, especially with regards to China. Pointing to the West Philippine Sea dispute, he pushes for leadership that stands with the interests of the Filipino people and the Philippines, no matter the pressure or intimidation.

In the years to come, he hopes corruption can be greatly reduced by curbing political dynasties, as goals set in 2016 to eradicate corruption remain distant.

Some believed this year’s delegation to be the one most capable of winning a gold medal since Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco lost to Bulgarian Daniel Petrov in 1996, bagging a silver medal. Indeed, these people were proven right with the amazing performances of the Philippines’ athletes.

In men’s middleweight boxing, Carlo Paalam gave it all in his boxing matches, winning a silver medal after his loss to British gold medalist Galal Yafai. Paalam showed frightening ferocity even in his defeat, being an underdog who pulled off several major victories against Irish flyweight boxer Brendan Irvine and a unanimous victory against Algerian Mohamed Flissi.

Bagging a bronze medal in men’s middleweight boxing, Eumir Marcial blazed through his matches, easily defeating his first opponent, Algerian Younes Nemouchi, and knocking the second, Armenian Arman Darchinyan, unconscious. He eventually lost to Ukrainian Oleksandr Khyzhniak in a narrow split decision by the judges. He has, however, given a performance worthy of pride.

In yet another boxing category, this time women’s featherweight boxing, the Philippines had seen successes yet again, with Nesthy Petecio bringing home a silver medal. She defeated four other contestants, including Italian Irma Testa in a tense semifinal match, though Petecio lost the final to Japanese home bet Sena Irie, becoming the first Filipina boxer to win an Olympic medal. GOOD MORNING, TEACHER! A SHORT STORY

The bubbly tone of the Mathematics teacher that stood in front of the class of seventhgraders echoed throughout the room. A few students chuckled, though some barely bared a grin. It was the first week of school and their adviser was giving an orientation on the classroom rules. However, no one was truly paying too much attention. Homeroom went by in an instant, and soon enough all the girls were filing out of their classrooms and into the hallway. Squeezing past the groups of students lingering by the sides and the teachers trying to get past them into the faculty was Flora Santos, a new student in this Catholic all-girls school. She was of average height, the kind of height that would get you to stand in the middle of the line during class pictures. Her skirt ended a little below her knees, and her blouse wasn’t too tight. As she walked, some room was given for her to move about as she shouldered her bag. Flora took a quiet journey down to the cafeteria, where everyone sat with their kabarkada, of which she so far had none. She thought that getting used to the new environment of this new school would take some time, but it should happen eventually, right?

“Look closely, girls, and watch what happens when I put this chemical in water. I may even offer extra points if you can name this chemical.”

At that, each student almost simultaneously leaned forward in their seats and observed what their teacher was doing. In his hands were a small glass bowl of what looked to be waterfountain-water and an eyedropper full of clear liquid. He squeezed the dropper so that the clear liquid poured down into the water, and suddenly, the water changed its hue.

“Bro! It turned pink!” Someone shouted, and the rest of the class began to erupt in exclamations of awe and wonder.

Later that night, while on a call with her seatmate/new friend, Ina, Flora was at home, laying on the floor, and searching online, ‘substance that turns water pink’.

“And so I told her, since she was saying all that-” “Phenolphthalein!” Flora exclaimed.

“What?”

“That’s the chemical that sir showed in class today, Ina. Phenolphthalein.”

“What a word! How do you even spell that?”

“P-H-E-N- It doesn’t matter, because dude, it turned the water pink!”

The school year was almost halfway through, and Flora scratched at her collarbone as she walked into the campus. Buwan ng Wika hailed fun attire and itchy torsos. Oh, and everyone’s bakya falling off in the hallways. Honestly, Flora had to admit that though the baro’t saya was itchy, everyone looked good. After unpacking her backpack, bringing out the necessary materials for the day, and putting everything under her desk, she and her friend Ina exited the classroom to walk around the school, but they got back to the classroom later in time for homeroom.

Their homeroom teacher left the room and their next teacher, a jolly and sweet Christian Life Education teacher, strode into the classroom with a smile.

“Wow! Look at your costumes! Ang ganda ng mga students ko ngayon!”

Without missing a beat, the girls gave each other a single look for a split second, then turned back to their teacher to say, “Ngayon lang po, miss?!”

The teacher rolled her eyes and laughed, “You girls are always so literal! Can I not say you look good? Naku! Let’s just start class.”

“High five, Sir!” The Social Studies teacher failed to suppress the laugh that was daring to come out.

Briskly walking towards him was none other than Flora, who was headed for the cafeteria for recess. She had her right hand held up high, as if reciting the “Panatang Makabayan,” and a wide grin that practically reached her ears.

“Floraaa... Ang kulit mo ngayon!”

He shook his head with a smile and pressed his hand (which was curled into a thumbsup) against her open palm.

“I’m counting that, sir. It’s still a high five. I think that makes 19 this week?”

Flora unfolded a piece of notebook paper from her pocket and began to write down the date, and a single stick.

“I thought that was a joke! Tina-tally mo talaga?”

“Of course sir! I don’t joke with my teachers!” She feigned a pitiful expression.

Later that month, after washing her hands in the bathroom and drying them, Flora walked out to see that Social Studies teacher far away in the hallway. She waved to him, to which he raised his hand, then proceeded to “Naruto run” down the hall to her.

Without a word, he held up his hand abruptly for a high-five, and she promptly jumped up to high-five with a wide lopsided grin.

“Make sure you tally that, ha?”

All these little quotes, gestures, expressions, and moments lingered in Flora’s head as she stared blankly at her computer screen.

“Santos, are you there? Can you hear me, Flora?”

With a jolt, she grabbed her mouse and unmuted her microphone.

“Sorry, Miss! Present.”

“Okay, next. Antonio?”

“Present!”

She slumped in her chair, groaning as she put her head in her hands. Tapping her feet on the floor of her bedroom, she listened to her teacher continue to take the attendance and attention of all students in the Zoom call. An awkward silence settled in between the teacher’s voice and the class, telling the class what subjects would be synchronous or asynchronous.

Upon the announcement of “screen-break,” Flora collapsed on the bed, staring at her ceiling.

It had been almost two years since she’d been trapped in her home with her family. She was grateful, of course, for the time she got to spend with them, but she missed the social interactions. Yes, she could easily video chat with her best friends, and text her batchmates, but it would never be the same. She couldn’t even talk to her teachers in the same ways she used to. She could only formally email, “Good morning, teacher. I would like to ask about the project,” and so on. She closed her eyes, wanting to at least doze off for ten minutes, but all she saw were the colorful, fading snippets of her memories back at school. She remembered researching on her laptop while on a call with her first friend, she remembered different school events held on campus, she remembered her nice teachers, her strict teachers, and the teachers in between. Even those teachers she would normally find intimidating, even scary, she longed to see once more. A single sigh left her lips, her brow creased.

She remembered it all so clearly. But just like memories do, it fizzled away, back into the depths of her mind, to sit. For her to contemplate. For her to long for.

Kahit papano, sila ay nagiging bayani sa sarili nilang pamamalakad, ngunit, higit dito, may bumubungad pa ring mga bayaning hindi natin karaniwang nararamdaman. Isa sa mga halimbawa nito ay si Ginoong Alwin “Boj” Reclusado. Siya ay isang guro mula sa Xavier School San Juan na ambassador din ng mga educational apps sa Pilipinas.

Ang pag-aaral mula sa mga sariling tahanano online distance learning (ODL) ay isang pangyayaring hindi inasahan ng lipunan nanagdulot ng maraming hamon noong nagsimula ito. Naging pangunahing pokus ng mga guro ang pamamaraan kung paano nila tuturuan ang kanilang mga estudyante at kung paano pananatilihin ang interes ng mga bata sa pag-aaral kahit wala na sila sa loob ng silid-aralan. THINGS WE MISSED

STUDENT VIEWS ON COVID-19’S IMPACT ON OUR EDUCATION

eing in online school since early 2020 due to COVID-19 has greatly affected the lives of many students. We have missed many opportunities and though some highlyanticipated events did push through, they often did not meet our expectations because of the restrictions and limitations. Indeed, everything from our daily routines to learning styles has become vastly different from what we are used to.

For Povedans, a pre-pandemic day would usually start out pretty early and end later in the afternoon. “The day would begin at 5 am as I had to leave early to beat the traffic and although school still started at 7:40 the busy schedule started as soon as I walked through

the gate.” Grade 12 Batch Representative Elise Cruz says when asked about her old routine. “Breaks were used to work on group works and dismissal was extended for extracurriculars. It was tiring, but there were no complaints, especially because I was having fun.” To provide contrast, we then inquired about her routine now, during the online setup: “Now is a different story. I usually wake up at 6 to get ready for the day, but my grogginess only leaves once I drink coffee around 7:30.

Classes officially start at 8 and though the new schedule is a lot more varied I can usually expect to end at around 3 or 4.” It is clear that though education continues despite the lack of physical interaction, it is not the same as being able to go to classrooms and seeing

your friends in person.

Elise, like many other students, was also in the middle of transitioning from Junior to Senior High. Starting quarantine at Grade 10 and her now being Grade 12, on top of an entirely new school level, she had to get used to online classes as well. “The transition from Junior High School to Senior High School was definitely a difficult process,” Says Cruz, “...I really struggled with the workload at first and really had to figure out new ways to engage myself in learning in the new online environment.” In addition to this, Elise added a comment regarding her study habits then versus now: “I would say that I had and still have pretty good study habits, [and] although I do find myself succumbing to procrastination now and then, I am usually able to get work done and submit anything I have due on time.”

The pandemic has also limited the number of activities and events that schools can offer.

Being in the last batch to be able to experience high school fully in-person, Nicole Dolojan, a Povedan Alumna who graduated in 2019, shared her perspective on school events.

“School events are always fun at that time and age. I always looked forward to school events (prom, ball, fair, XP, etc.) [because] I always thought they were fun. I do believe [some] are overhyped, but it really depends on who you are with. There were some that did live up to my expectations, the more unforgettable events, but there are also the ones you don’t mind forgetting or erasing from your memory.”

Elise Cruz however, whose batch never got to experience these activities and gatherings, feels as such: “Prom and Grad ball were events that I had anticipated my whole [time

in] high school...Unfortunately, my batch will be missing our opportunity to be able to have those experiences and I guess all that I can say is that it is a huge let-down to know I will be missing the memories that people often say make the high school experience.”

Often we wonder what school would be like if everything were still in person. When asked which between online and physical classes she prefers, Nicole Dolojan answered that she preferred online school for sure, adding that she “would prefer Senior High School online if it means I get to experience college in person”. Contrary to Dolojan’s choice, Elise Cruz is confident about her preference towards physical classes, stating: “I definitely like in-person school better. [I would have liked to have had] senior high school in person as well. I really miss being with my friends and being able to have activities, class discussions, and events with my batch. There are just a lot of limitations with online school that you don’t have with in-person classes.”

The perception between those who finished in-person and those who are about to finish it online are vastly different, with the former finding Senior High School to not be that much of a significant time in her life and the latter being disheartened over not being able to have the “Senior High School experience” face-to-face with other peers.

It is important to remember that though our opinions vary from person to person, we are still fighting the same battle. May we remember to continue to support each other through these trying times, and that when things get back to normal and schools are back open, we could take back the experiences we lost.

I

t has been over 20 months since quarantine first started in the Philippines, and the country still has not been able to pick itself up in varying aspects. While public establishments such as malls and cinemas start opening, school now is still limited to distance learning through online classes or physically distributed learning modules; the first is accomplished through the internet with the usage of different gadgets while the latter is through printed forms of lessons and activities. Xavier School Nuvali (XSN) uses the first option, the Xavier School E-Learning (XSEL). XSEL has been implemented in XSN for over a year and is now branded as XSEL 2.0 due to it being its second year.

“Majority also mentioned experiencing negative emotions like tiredness and isolation, but many have also expressed that they now feel a sense of neutrality to the situation due to the fact they have gotten used to the lockdown.”

That funny feeling is a song by Bo Burnham from his comedy special Inside; it’s a song about those funny feelings of loneliness, dread, and hope. Bo Burnham made the entire special during the pandemic resulting in the comedy special really capturing the experience of being alone with yourself during the pandemic. I conducted report of the XSN SC Compte Rendu series. a dialogue with one person from XSN’s Senior According to the data, the students of XSN High School (SHS) faculty and two from the were asked which activities they missed the XSN SHS student body. To better grasp the most, the majority of them included physical concept of the funny feeling, we listened to activities. The report also showed Wala Nang Kumakatok by Zild; These songs the feelings of the students after 1.5 years of tap on the idea of regret, burn-out, emotional lockdown. I believe that that funny feeling is an amalgamation of one’s thoughts and emotions that’s recently been more apparent due to the confines of our own room; There is no one feeling, because that one feeling is different for everyone. It’s their feelings inside quarantine. My funny feeling comes from the difference between face-to-face classes and online learning. School and home have always been two separate structures in my own daily life pre-quarantine, representing work and rest respectively. So when quarantine rolled around, school and home melded.

Due to this, being inside really shook how I approached work. I’m not alone in this, one of the students from the dialogue mentioned how “Nothing is real until we’re all finally able to go outside… [It’s like] everything is put on pause.” and that’s because of the setting change. The place where one usually enjoyed time with themselves and rested, has become a place of work and responsibility. Rest and work no longer has a clear line and that’s made everyone adapt in many different ways.

I think it’s a given that different people adapt differently depending on circumstances. With that being said, due to similar experiences but varying differences in adapting, people end up being vulnerable and volatile. This was discussed in the dialogue, it’s a state where, because of the sudden shift in setting and way of living, people’s social practices were shattered and exchanged for the arduous and monotonous motions of quarantine living.

A state where one yearns for kindness and empathy, because they know everyone else has had it hard. People yearn for kindness the same way they do loneliness, it’s like hunger.

The absence of food results in hunger, the absence of company results in loneliness, and the absence of kindness and empathy results in the need for that warmth; hence people are vulnerable. It’s a time when people keep on working through hard days because they need to, and they end up forgetting to take time for themselves. People unknowingly become volatile. The lack of check-ins or any meaningful actions from people, lead to pentup feelings that are ready to pour out anytime.
