Practices with related thoughts Several practical examples in my portfolio revolve around themes such as “What do we leave behind?”, “Why are we humans?”, “Where are we in the universe?”, and “How will we live together?”. These themes explore the intricate relationship between humans and their environments, mapping across both time and spatial scales.

Envir on m en ts

Between “humans” and “environments,” a proper intervention is needed to make engagement happen. As Steen described a “ball” as a medium to express the feeling of architectural material in the book Experiencing Architecture (Rasmussen, 1964), the designer, like me, is to design the intervention to convey the story to the space, to invite the audience as a trigger coming to the experience into the space. It is like the “racquet” given as a tool to experience physically.

How will we live together?

Eulogy of the International Space Station

RITUALISTIC PERFORMANCE Performance / Curation / Installation Design Master study major project Location: London, UK Time: 2023 “Eulogy of the International Space Station” is a sonic fiction that highlights the urgency of collaborative survival in a time when private missions threaten the future of Earth. The project includes a workshop/event and performance that invites space enthusiasts to reimagine space stations through participatory sonic installations that sonify real-time electromagnetic data. The sound resources collected during the event were used to compose the eulogy in collaboration with Hengrui Zhang, using sound to enable personal interpretation and collective reflection on the future of humanity. Sonic fiction offers a means of decoding our relationship with technology, reimagining humanity in the post-human era, and discovering new modes of being in the world (Kodwo Eshun, 1998).

EXHIBITION AND PERFORMANCE The exhibition of this project will be a ritual in both time and space, revealing a collective recognition as a community (Han and Steuer, 2020), which creates the stable time and space and feeling of belonging, and leads to the create the ritualistic event for a spaceship to excite introspective contemplation as a collective species. The participatory performance will be arranged at a specific time. After the performance, the installation will transform into a “monument” that has been built during performance, accompanied by a soundtrack with the recorded live sounds.

POP-UP EVENT Greenwich Park holds great significance in relation to both time and space. The prime meridian, which passes through the park, marks the starting point of time as defined by humans. This makes the park a meaningful location to kick-start conversations about space exploration for this project. By using this location as a starting point, we can explore the relationship between time and space and ignite a thought-provoking discussion.

EXPERIENCE DESIGN ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE Performance / Curation / Installation Design Master study project Location: New York, USA Time: 2022 This is an material experiment project for a fragrance company’s event. The material itself provides a source for the story. This concept inspired by Firmenich’s (fragrance company) responsibility and sustainability aspect. Fragrance is inspired by nature, and take ingredients from nature; While facing the climate crisis, Future fragrance, Firmenich, reflect on the environments, preserve and promote the natural environments by using the advanced technology/Green chemistry/white biotechnology showing the responsibility to the environment and influence the whole fragrance industry. Thus, fragrances can send a signal or alert to remind people to sense the environments.

this concept proposed a time-based installation set in event that shows how the environment changes and sends the odour signal to visitors in order to SENSE the changes in the environment: It start with lighting up the humanmade structure made of wax and metal that is suspended from ceiling. The wax melts and gradually reforms into a new landscape. The performer serves as a metaphor of fragrance business, dances according to the smell, then can reshapes of the melted was to create a new landscape.

12

02 Melting Point

MATERIAL EXPERIMENTS Wax has a long history; it was invented in ancient times for lighting purposes and was created from natural materials. It depicts how humans benefit from natural resources. The melting process, on the other hand, demonstrates how the artificial materials return to nature. The melting process shows the change from a variety of angles, including time, form, and fragrance. As a metaphor, this process shows how the fragrance industry was inspired by nature and is today preserving and promoting natural settings. This concept I want to achieve is that achieve my interest in multi-meaning material in physical form model. It is needed to test the wax making and melting processes, which corresponds to the sensorium idea of sensing the environments holistically. The structure of this scaled model was made of metal mesh, and it was intended to test the melting process proposed for the event.

Grand columns, supporting the pediment, and the large symbol on it, all the cream color buried in the green shades, solemn but not somber. The large symbol on the pediment attracts people to look up and think of the glory of the past. Follow the receptionist into the foyer, a low-profile and elegant space, a few old lamp hanging from the ceiling, and the receptionist informs the story about their discovery and remanufacturing. From the lobby to the gallery, the receptionist points the door and windows remain the original look that carefully restored. On the sides: cloak area is behind the reception desk for information and cost check; the other side is the open resting area where guests who come first can sit and relax to wait for the rest of their party to join.

When entering the Great Hall, the impact is developed through contrast of a gray tall space to the smaller entrance. In this gallery, visitors are first attracted to the six exhibit clusters with different numbers, colors and moving/still images of vertical window panels. The story about this estate particularly allures attention. Besides videos, images and text, a scale model made of solid metal attracts both vision and touches. Visitors spread out to the subjects of their own interests, participate and interact naturally, moved by newly interpreted perspectives. Some begin to share and exchange thoughts with each other.

Enter the lobby

Enter the gallery

Because the content, location, and information on the spot are quite rich, visitors may not necessarily read all the stories, but as long as they have seen more than two, they can sense the commonality of these stories: “good faith”, “ideal”, “help” “public welfare”... Visitors can’t help but think of the themes of the two sculptures at the intersection. Some people use their mobile phone to scan the QR code and participate in the charity on the spot, some also guess the promises what the new estate owner would make.

At this moment, the light slowly dims, and the mega scale LED screen covering the entire back wall slowly illuminates, and the bright lines gradually appear outlining the main building facade, while a glowing gold portal slowly descends from above and connects to the facade in the background, creating a unique visual perspective.

When the show ends, the lights on the big screen went dark and the hall returned to its original state. Most visitors chose to come to the lounge areas on the sides to exchange views with their peers or new friends during this visit. There are several cases, which exhibit old stuff from the past located in the rest area, visitors can imagine the glory of the estate by watching them. Home design products from Russia, Europe and China define a number of relatively independent spaces, both private and open.

Theme performance

The color and texture of the image gradually enrich, and different figures move in and out of the gate. When the windows on the screen illuminate one by one in the night scene, the window panels in the hall also turn brighter. More figures appear around the visitors. The whole space is dominated by this core device. People share dreams, courage and passion. It builds a passage of legendary energy through history.

The ends

In line with tea and coffee, this cultural center not only exhibits and communicates, but also encourages the exchange of ideas and technologies, and promotes the gathering of greater good wills and good deeds.

POP UP EVENT IN RENOVATED INDUSTRIAL PARK Installation and Site Design Individual project Location: Beijing, China Time: 2021 Area: 1012m² The “Fusing” is a pop-up event design project, located in Shougang park which was the biggest steel-making industry based in the north part of China. This pop-up event aims to held exhibitions, shows, and markets. The goal of the design is to communicate the history and story of the steelmaking company after its renovation. The concept of this proposal was inspired by the original function of the site, No. 3 Blast Furnace. It was originally used to fuse, refine and reuse raw mineral materials. Therefore, I decided to use metal scaffolding system to structurally “fuse” the history of the site, the creativity of the event, and the people together.
