Publishing Editor Skate Who is the Better Skater? Who is truly the better skater men or women? Or is the question of “better” subjective depending on the person you ask? For me, the better skater would be the one who has truly mastered the art of rollerskating, incorporating various styles in their arsenal. But, this doesn’t answer the question of which sex is dominant on the floor. I suppose being a woman and an avid skater, one would expect that I would automatically veer toward women. However, I grew up wanting to emulate the guys techniques -- they were gritty, hardcore and they appeared to be flawless in their movements. They exhibited a cockiness that the women appeared to be without and I wanted my moves to be as bold and fresh as the fellas. So, if I was asked this question 10 or 15 years ago, I might have told you the men had my vote all the way. But it’s 2009, and the women are giving the men a run for their money. Nowadays, women are the forefront in the middle and on the outside—making the plays and creating the moves. No longer are women emulating men; they are making their own path. So, I would have to say, it is a draw. Although, I am in love with the cocky, hardcore, competitive roughness that the guys bring, the women are equally impressive. This month’s issue showcases both men and women in the different genres and allows you, the reader, to judge for yourself and choose a winner in the Battle of the Sexes. Enjoy!

Skaters Xchange Exchange Dialogue with Skaters

WHO ARE BETTER SKATERS: MEN OR WOMEN? WHY? Send all answers to: info@xrnewszine.com, including your full name.

“The question of the moment is “who is a better skater – men or women?” I must say that award goes to men and here is my reason why… EGO – men are 90% ego and 10% emotion. Men like to have their ego stroked and men will show off their manliness in front of women and other men to let them they know they are the best skater in the building. Men will do head-turning tricks, splits and slides to capture the attention of the building. Ladies expose their sexiness by their outfits (with accessories of course) and how they move those hips will keep men in a trance. Women control the guys’ imagination and hold that power by not doing too much or too little – sweating and falling is out of the question and are prohibited. This key difference confirms men are better because of their passion (and willingness) to do more to capture the attention of other skaters.” And there it is…from the mind of Will Nesbitt, Director of Promotions World on Wheels Roller Skating – Los Angeles, CA “There is no comparison, both are equal in strength talent and ability. The only difference is in the execution. The fellas bring the hard & edgy while the ladies show the soft & sexy of the same move. Definite eye candy for the opposite sex.” Gwen White - New York I don’t think sex has anything to do with it, it’s talent with hard work. Men can focus more on a single task where women tend to stretch themselves over many. Meaning this, men will do one thing really good and women will do several good. Men are better at one trick and women can pull off many in succession. The Good Reverend - Celina, Ohio

Tracey

Akines

Tracy M. Akines is a modern-day superwoman.

The thought of balancing a family, career, and community outreach could be daunting for the average person. However, Tracy seems to accomplish it all effortlessly. A native of southern New Jersey, Tracy was introduced to rollerskating at the tender age of nine. “My mom and my brothers introduced me to skating,” she said. “I’m the youngest, so, I used to always go with my older brothers. I just enjoyed [skating] and kept asking to go back again. I would always go every Saturday and Sunday night to the local rink.” Known for her gracious demeanor and warm smile, Tracy still enjoys skating as much as she did as a child. “I enjoy skating because I get to meet new people,” she shared. “And

So, you can imagine how many miles a person gets in a 3-hour session.” In terms of skate technique, Tracy’s skate style is comparable to skaters from Philadelphia, Delaware and south New Jersey. “It’s when we ride the wall and skate backwards and forwards in trains,” she explains. “[Now], I’m trying to learn the New York and north New Jersey style.” Tracy’s passion for skating soon turned into an opportunity. “[Skating] has been a hobby of mine for so long and it’s turned Continued on page 26

Duncan Pea

It is common for most superheroes to conceal their identity among the general public. Yet, every so often a hero will emerge to reveal themselves as the “people’s champion.” Such is the case with Duncan Pea, who has become a staple in North Carolina’s rollerskating community. A native of Flint, Mich., Duncan began skating at the age of 8, but stopped once he reached his teens. Several years later, he was reintroduced to the sport by one of his co-workers. “Warren Shannon kept telling me about [skating] and all of these adults that attended,” he recalled. “One Sunday, Warren said that he [couldn’t] go out with us because he was going skating. Because he liked it so much, he got me out there…and seeing everybody flying around the rink, made me feel like a kid again.” Even though his interest in the sport had been reignited, Pea was in no hurry to put on a pair of skates. “It took at least three weeks of watching skaters before I had the nerve to even get out there on skates again,” he said and chuckled. “Besides being nervous, you feel like you’re too grown to be out there sweating that hard.” It was not until he attended Joi and John’s Sk8-A-thon that Duncan really saw a different level of skating. “I saw people from my hometown out there skating and then I really got into it,” he said. “I had to break up with a couple of girls because of this skating thing!” Since then, the honorary Carolina Cruisers Skaters AssociFebruary 2009 | XR NEWS | www.XRnewszine.com

I tend to look down a lot and I’m focused on doing my moves and I can see people in front of me, but I’m a glider – everything is kind of like a blur of colors. And I love skating backwards. When I jumpstarted back into skating, I learned how to skate backwards and skated like that for two months.” Having been both a patron as well as the session manager of the Skate Ranch, in Raleigh, N.C., for several years, Duncan is practically a historian of the facility. He regales in stories of the Skate Ranch rink, which has been owned by the Orr family since 1972. In 2002, the Skate Ranch was forced to shut its doors due to a fire in the building; it reopened two years later and Duncan returned to his second home shortly thereafter. It was only a matter of time before Pea officially became part of the Skate Ranch staff. In fact, he was practically working there when he was not an actual employee. “[Carolina Cruisers Skaters Association founders] King and Chris were with me when I started adult night on Sundays – actually, I Continued on page 26

Health

Uterine Fibroids by Leah Bland A

uterine fibroid is the most common non-cancerous tumor of a woman’s uterus and is one of the most common medical conditions that affect women. Fibroids are made of muscle cells and other tissues that grow within and around the wall of the uterus. They can grow as a single tumor or in clusters. According to the National Women’s Health Information Center, about 20 to 80 percent of women develop fibroids by the time they reach age 50. Many women with uterine fibroids have no symptoms. For those that do exhibit symptoms, they depend on the size, number and location of the fibroids. Symptoms may include: excessive menstrual bleeding; pelvic pain; frequent urination; enlargement of the lower abdomen; pain during sex; complications during pregnancy; and labor and reproductive problems. There are many factors that can increase a woman’s risk of developing fibroids such as age, family history, ethnic origin, obesity and eating habits. Fibroids become more common as women age – especially during their 30s and 40s through menopause. Studies have shown that one-in-five women over the age of 35 have a uterine fibroid. After menopause, fibroids usually shrink. Having a family member with fibroids can increase a woman’s risk. If a woman’s mother had fibroids, her risk of having them is about three times higher than average. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), African-American women are three-to-five-times more likely to develop fibroids than white women. Women who are overweight or obese are also at higher risk. For obese women, the risk is two-to-three-times greater than average. Research has shown that eating a lot of red meat and ham is linked with a higher risk of fibroids. However, eating plenty of green vegetables seems to protect women from developing fibroids. There are numerous tests available to diagnose fibroids. In some cases, a simple pelvic examination will allow the doctor to determine the size of the uterus. Another diagnostic option is an ultrasound (sometimes referred to as a sonogram). An X-ray would be another option, though they have proven to be rarely helpful. However, a specialized test, called an MRI is very useful for diagnosing fibroids. Finally, there are two tests that are similar called a sonohysterography (a vaginal ultrasound) and a hysteroscopy, which uses a small, lighted tube to visualize the inside of the uterus. The choice of diagnostic method depends on the symptoms and the result of the physical exam. There are multiple treatment options available for fibroids. Small and asymptomatic fibroids can usually be managed by an annual examination to check for growth. If you have mild symptoms, the doctor may suggest taking medication. There

12 |

are over-the-counter drugs, such as ibuprofen, that can be helpful for mild pain. If there is heavy bleeding during your period, a doctor might suggest taking an iron supplement that can keep you from getting anemia or correct it if you already are anemic. Several drugs commonly used for birth control can be prescribed to help control symptoms of fibroids. If you have fibroids with moderate or severe symptoms, surgery may be the best way to treat them. There are four types of surgical treatments for fibroids: myomectomy, hysteroscopic resection, myolysis and hysterectomy. A myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove fibroids without taking out the healthy tissue of the uterus. This procedure is best for women who would like to have children after the treatment or wish to keep their uterus. Though this is generally a safe procedure, the downside is that in one out of every four cases, the fibroids grow back and can often prompt further surgery – including a hysterectomy. A hysteroscopy involves a thin tube inserted into the uterus during an outpatient surgery. The fibroid is shaved off and removed in pieces. This surgery will not work for fibroids buried deep in the uterine wall. Myolysis is a relatively newer surgery in the United States involving a needle inserted into the fibroid and is guided by laparoscopy, which is used to freeze and destroy the fibroid. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicate that fibroids are the cause for 3 out of every 10 hysterectomies. An estimated 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the U.S. annually. A hysterectomy is the only true curable surgery for fibroids. This procedure removes the uterus and is used when a woman’s fibroids are large, if she has heavy bleeding, is near or past menopause or does not want any children. For more information about fibroids or to be tested, please consult your doctor.•

Breast Cancer: The Male Version by Leah Bland

When people hear the word breast cancer, they immediately

think of women; however, women are not the only ones to suffer from this disease. Even though it is a rare condition and is most prominent among women, breast cancer can also occur in men. While women are about 100 times more likely to get breast cancer, the condition in men account for one percent of all breast cancer diagnosis. The majority of cases of male breast cancer are detected between the ages of 60 to 70, although the condition can develop at any age. In 2008, the American Cancer Society estimated that around 1,990 new cases of breast cancer in men were diagnosed and that breast cancer caused around 480 deaths in men. The Unsettling Wars of the Democratic Republic of the Congo by Tami Ojewale

Since 1996, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has suffered from unsettling civil wars. Instability in the DRC was a direct result of the bloodshed in its neighboring country, Rwanda. The civil war in Rwanda stemmed from the 1994 genocide of the Tutsi ethnic group, led by Hutu militia forces and elite Hutu politicians. The reported estimated death toll in Rwanda was between 800,000 and 1,000,000. Millions of Rwandan refugees fled to the borders of Zaire (now known as the DRC), triggering the first and second Congo wars. Despite a peace agreement signed in 2003, DRC is still suffering from civil chaos, a failing health system and staggering violence and rape against women. The DRC has a population of approximately 66 million people. The central African nation has the highest death rate in Africa. According to a report conducted by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), 5.4 million people have died since 1998. The crisis in Congo has displaced millions of people. After the Rwandan Patriotic Front took over in July 1994, nearly two million people consisting of Rwandan Armed Forces and Hutu militia groups fled to Zaire in fear of retaliatory genocide from the Tutsis. During that time, President Mobutu Sese Seko has received pressure to transition into a democratic political system. With much force, President Mobutu transitioned the government, but failed to keep his promise of a full reform. The First Congo War began in November 1996, when Hutus and Tutsis fought in refugee camps which is commonly referred to as the “Great Lakes refugee crisis.” Accusations of supporting Hutus militia and promoting violence finally led to President Mobutu’s end of succession. In May 1997, the First Congo War officially ended when Laurent Kabila overthrew President Mobutu after 32 years as president. In 1997, Zaire was renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo by President Kabila. The Second Congo War or “Great War of Africa” lasted from August 1998 until July 2003. It is infamously known as the deadliest war in Africa and the deadliest conflict, worldwide, since World War II. After the assassination of his father, President Laurent Kabila, Joseph Kabila took office in 2001. During that time, President Joseph Kabila negotiated the withdrawal of Rwandan militia residing in the DRC in order to protect its borders. Malnutrition has drastically affected people in the DRC. In 2001, approximately 1,000 people died daily from starvation.

February 2009 | XR NEWS | www.XRnewszine.com

Nearly 1.9 million children are suffering from malnutrition and an estimated 73 percent of the population is malnourished. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is working to prevent and bring an end to world hunger. The FAO provides villagers with harvesting tools; seeds to grow vegetables and food crops; and also trains families in feeding centers. In 2003, the United Nations, along with neighboring countries of the DRC, negotiated peace agreements that officially ended the Second Congo War. The agreement focused on the removal of foreign forces operating in the DRC in order for an interim Congolese government to gain control. The agreement attempted to establish political, military and economic stability between various government groups and militia forces functioning in the DRC. The integration of these various group established the Transitional Government of the DRC. However, the Transitional Government came under fire for its appointment of political officials. Despite the agreement of peace, the conflict between military groups and government officials halted security reform. Currently, the North Kivu conflict is the latest turmoil in the DRC. North Kivu borders Rwanda and Uganda. Tutsi rebel leader Laurent Nkunda has accused African peacekeeping troops of bias agendas to stabilize and unite the people of the DRC. Nkunda warned retaliation against peacekeepers if they attempted to subdue him and his rebel followers. An estimated 7,000 to 8,000 followers are reported to be a part of Nkunda’s group. In addition, neighboring countries are creating their battlegrounds in the DRC. The Congolese government alleges Rwanda is supporting the Tutsis rebel group led by Nkunda, creating more tension in the DRC. The Lord’s Resistance Army is a Ugandan rebel group, which crosses into the DRC and recruits children as soldiers. According to the United Nations, 27,000 sexual assaults were reported in 2006. Efforts to care for victims continue, however, aid workers are encountering attacks by militia groups. On December 11, 2008, IRC employee Seguin Tshieskedi died after an attack in Bukavu, DRC. The IRC collaborated with Congo’s North Kivu Ministry of Health to train doctors and nurses to treat victims of sexual violence. This training focuses on psychological and medical treatment. Since August 2008, gender-based violence has escalated. The United States Memorial Museum stated that, in October 2008, more than 250,000 people were displaced due to fighting in North Kivu province. Despite the increasing hostile environment, humanitarian workers continue to work to provide stability in the DRC. The IRC Trains Health Workers Caring for Survivors of Sexual Violence (2008). TRACY AKINES

DUNCAN PEA

into a career,” said Akines. She has been a staff member of Millennium Skate World (United Skates of America) Camden, N.J., since its grand opening on December 14, 2000. From 20012008, Tracy worked as the general manager of Millennium; she is now the regional manager of the facility and her husband, Lawrence, is the general manager. In 2008, Tracy and her husband began a new venture as co-owners of the Adrenaline Skating Center, in Elsmere, Del. “We have an excellent management team and support staff that helps us oversee two facilities,” she said. Tracy is a strong supporter of community service within the skating community as well as the communities surrounding her two rinks. It was not long before the public took notice of her hard work and contributions. In 2004, Akines was featured on “Moms on the Move” – a weekly segment shown on NBC-10 which profiles "real moms" who show how they manage everything on their plate and make their hectic lives work. “It was about me turning my hobby into a career,” she shared. “You know, a business woman managing both my family and the skating rink.” Both of Akines’ rinks offer various community outreach programs including:

took it over before I officially started working [at Skate Ranch],” he said. “There were only five patrons there. Seven years later, more of the original, veteran and skilled skaters come out on Sundays. Now, we have two adult nights – so [skaters] have options, which they didn’t have before.” The second adult night is held on first Thursdays and is hosted by radio DJ Brian Dawson of 97.5 WQRZ-FM (Radio One). First Thursdays quickly became a popular session, attracting more than 600 people each month with skaters coming from as far as Virginia and South Carolina. Duncan’s hard work and success were not overlooked by the skate community – in 2008, the Skate Ranch was nominated for several Adrenalin awards. Duncan has made regular guest appearances on www. plugged.tv – an online program – to discuss rollerskating, which eventually led to his own 10-minute commentary segment called “Skate Off.” “It was just another form of promotion to get skating out there,” said Pea. In 2007, Duncan appeared in a music video for Small World’s song titled “Mr. Magnificent,” featuring Ludacris, which was filmed at the Skate Ranch. He has also been featured in Studio 55 magazine’s February 2008 issue; and he discussed the Skate Ranch’s adult sessions in Truth DVD magazine. Duncan’s hard work to promote the Skate Ranch has paid off. He has hosted numerous celebrity guests at the rink including: actor and producer of ”Wild N’ Out” Nick Cannon; and musical artists Day 26, D-Ray, Shawty-lo, DJ Unk, Webstar and Young B, Ludacris and Grammy award winner Brandy; and radio personality Russ Parr.

Millennium • Community leadership program • Chamber of Commerce program • “City Kids” program (area businesses sponsor skating lessons) • Girls Scouts (earn a business-wise badge) • Read and Roll” library reward program (students read 5 books and earn a book marker good for one free rink admission) Adrenaline • Girls Scouts • Student of the Month (teacher selects a student for a party in their honor) Typically, when she is at one of her rinks, Akines is busy with various responsibilities that prevent her from stepping on to the rink floor. However, when time permits, she attends the first Thursday night session at Branch Brook Park Roller Skating Center in Newark, N.J. “I like to go because it’s high energy and exciting,” she said. “I just don’t have the opportunity to skate as [much as I] would like to because of the business end of things.” Tracy has also traveled across the U.S. to out of town events in Brooklyn, N.Y., Tampa, Huntsville, Ala., Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., Raleigh, N.C., Baltimore, California and Philadelphia. Tracy believes that she is, without a doubt, a passionate skater. “Yes, I am a passionate skater,” she said. “There are so many benefits – friends, music and the light show – it is good clean fun.•

Community outreach also plays an important role in Duncan’s life. He has managed to incorporate various activities and programs offered at the Skate Ranch including: • Daycare and summer camp programs • Track out system (year-round school system to handle overpopulation in schools) • Girl Scout cookie drive (girl scouts from Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh) • Pee-wee football league sponsor • Host of the Wake County foster care program Christmas party • Host to African conferences, traditional ceremonies and Muslim prayers Duncan’s passion for rollerskating is almost hidden behind his calm and quiet demeanor – but if you look closely, it is revealed by the twinkle in his eyes when he is in any rink or among fellow skaters. “I enjoy talking to people,” said Pea. “[There is] no drama or extra stress…you can leave any problems you have at the door, once you have on wheels. I don’t really talk much on the skate floor…but I am going to compliment you on what you’ve been doing. Feeling the passion of others keeps me going.” In addition to juggling his duties at the Skate Ranch, Duncan has traveled to out of town skate events in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Richmond, Va., Pittsburgh, Pa., Elsmere, Del., Flint, Mich., Detroit, Cincinnati, Chicago, Indianapolis, Memphis, Continued on page 28

MALE BREAST CANCER continued from page 12

do normal cells. In most cases, it is not clear as to what triggers irregular cell growth in breast tissue in men. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, doctors indicate that about one in six cases of breast cancers in men are inherited compared to about five to 10 percent of breast cancers in women. The most common type of breast cancer is infiltrating ductal carcinoma, which is also a common type of breast cancer found in women. This is a type of cancer that spreads beyond the cell lining in the breast. Although male breast cancer and breast cancer in women are similar, important distinctions such as breast size and awareness affect early diagnosis and survival in cases of male breast cancer. The most common sign of breast cancer for both men and women is a lump or thickening in the breast. Oftentimes, the lump is painless. Other symptoms of male breast cancer include: skin dimpling or puckering; indentation of the nipple; changes in the nipple or breast skin (such as scaling or redness); or nipple discharge. Radiation exposure, high level of estrogen (such as liver disease or Klinefelter syndrome) and a family history of breast cancer can increase a man’s risk of developing this disease. Other risk factors may include age, genetic predisposition, excess weight and excessive alcohol use. Because it is very rare that men develop breast cancer, routine mammograms are not generally recommended. But, if your doctor suspects breast cancer, they may conduct a number of tests such as a breast examination, mammograms, breast ultrasound, nipple discharge examination or a biopsy. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, the chance for recovery and treatment options is generally the same for both women and men since the types of breast cancer and patterns of how the disease spreads are similar. A mastectomy a surgical procedure to remove the breast with the cancerous tumor – is generally the treatment of choice for male breast cancer. Chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapies are also used following surgery. For more information about male breast cancer, please consult with your doctor. •

Tenn., New Jersey, Charleston, S.C., and California. Duncan has enjoyed successfully combining his passion for rollerskating with his career for several years. “The people and conversations – hands down – make my job enjoyable,” said Pea. “Anybody who wants to talk, I’ll listen. That is how friendships develop. I don’t have any [biological] family here – but, [the skaters are] my family. Everybody in my life comes to the rink. “So, [skating is] my life.”•
