SOUTHBOUND FIRE RELIEF FUNDRAISER HBF Stadium Sunday, January 10, 2016 Walking into HBF Stadium for this special fundraiser for those affected by the bushfire in WA’s South West of Yarloop and Waroona, it was clear that love and admiration was the tone for the evening; with those who were suppose to be at Southbound, eager to see the line-up and appreciating the great cause of the evening. Nine-piece Fremantle hip hop outfit Koi Child were on as gates were opening and busted out grooves, encouraging a bop of the head and few listeners hustling up a dance. The group made quick acknowledgements for the event, before handing the stage over to Perth’s beloved indie folk rockers San Cisco. San Cisco’s charm amplified through the growing crowd, with their playful catchy indie tones and down-to-earth vibe. ‘Don’t be afraid to dance, go wild’, said lead singer/ guitarist Jordi Davieson, and so the crowd did. Beach, Mistakes, Magic and favourite Awkward, had revellers dancing not just on the floor, but around the stadium too. The passionate and talented drummer Scarlett Stevens and Davieson who would make shifts between tambourine and guitar with such ease, thanked the crowd for coming to the benefit. ‘This is such a great cause, our love goes out to all those affected by the

fires, Southbound did a great thing in making changes, because that fire is gnarly, this is the better option’, said Davieson. Birds Of Tokyo walked on stage in style with the Star Wars theme song. They were ready to do battle and raise spirits and

whilst dedicating Wild At Heart to the fire fighters working hard at the blaze in WA’s South West. Plans merged into an Eye Of The Tiger mix - it turned into an almighty singa-long that had everyone out of their seats. Utilising a montage of photos from the SW

funds for those affected by the fires and the crowd lapped it up! The loud, dominating start leaped into the track Weight Of The World, before leading to crowd favourites of Broken Bones, Silhouettic, Night Falls Quiet,

fire during Lanterns, they brought tears and love throughout the arena. Needing no introduction Bloc Party came on stage to a passionate crowd. With tracks such as This Modern Love, One

More Chance and new tracks Hymns and Virtue from their forthcoming fifth album, it was no surprise that everyone was up and dancing for the English indie rockers, with undertones of electronica and house music. Bloc Party’s spirited leader Kele Okereke, with his subtle sweet voice that develops deep rich tones, is a passionate focused musician, capturing the crowd. Knowing they were on the clock Mr Okereke said, ‘Right no more fucking around, we have 11 minutes to play four songs’, and with that HBF Stadium turn into one giant party, with each beat timed with a stellar light show. The arena roared to life with Disclosure taking their first mix for their DJ set. Arms were in the air, dancers all around the stadium, the odd ‘Tunes’ banner; it was obvious that the arena had turned from a rock concert, to a giant rave. The night came to an end, but the success of the event had fans of all the genres fill-out HBF Stadium to just under capacity, supporting those affected by the fire in WA’s South West by listening to some great tunes and raising $150,000 Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund - Waroona and Districts Fire Relief Appeal. Australia Day in Perth means many things, but one of them is certainly Skyworks. Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the City of Perth was proud to present the family friendly all day event for the WA community, on the banks of the Swan River. “As well as many new attractions, for the event’s 32nd year, we’re bringing back the much loved tradition of the crowd torch wave,” said Ms Scaffidi. For the finale, pyrotechnics company Howard & Sons returns after a six-year absence to present this year’s fireworks show. The laser show will now offer a 360 degree visibility to South Perth, Kings Park and beyond. Skyworks 2016 is presented by the City of Perth with the support of mix 94.5, Channel 7 and Lotterywest.

Nashville Skyline The Newport Record Club kicks into Season 4 this Thursday, January 14, with Rick Steele & The Highway 61 Band performing Bob Dylan’s seminal 1964 album, Nashville Skyline. “Up until this point the music genres were kind of separate,” Steele says of the album’s impact on music. “Country music still had plenty of songs about daddy going to gaol and mummy doing it tough. White rock’n’roll was still staggering slowly away from lyrics like ‘C’mon pretty baby lets move it and a groove it’. “When Dylan started Blowing In The Wind and the civil rights movement sang We Shall Overcome, John Lennon realised that it was time to move on from Love Me Do and say what ya mean and mean what ya say, the genres began to blur. “Nashville Skyline was at the forefront as Dylan was getting ready to go electric and piss everybody off at the Newport Folk Festival. It was like country meets folk meets rock.” You could sing Lay Lady Lay at a party and not be considered a country hick loser. The instrumentation was more sophisticated and the chord progressions were seriously more complex than the three

chord songs most local country or rock’n’roll bands were used to playing.” As for Nashville Skyline’s initial (and ongoing) impact on Steele himself, it seemed that the skies had opened. “To me the album introduced an awakening to a new direction. I was in the early stages of my career and was learning the popular songs of the time. Johnny Cash was a big star and was probably about that time flying A Boy Named Sue. We had a hit in New Zealand called Daddy Sang Bass - a hit for Cash in the States. We were busy trying to improve our guitar skills and shake off our nerd image! I wasn’t into heavy metal or guitar-based rock. Lyrics have always been where it began for me and Bob was the man with the gift of the Gab. This album was really the beginning of country rock!”

NORTH FREO PUB CRAWL The fourth edition of the North Freo Pub Crawl is happening again on Saturday, January 30. Some 25 acts will dominate five stages across the Railway and Swan Hotels, with the old girls hosting The Love Junkies, Hideous Sun Demon, Scalphunter, Pat Chow, Usurper of Modern Medicine (also playing a return show at The Bird on Saturday, January 22), David Craft, Rag N Bone, The Ghost Hotel, Verge Collection, Custom Royal, The Naysayers (VIC), The Disappointed, Moana, Kitchen People, High Horse, Shimmergloom, Jeff’s Dead, Pool Boy, Steve Hensby Band, Hip Priest, Sidewalk Diamonds (solo), AJ Wigwams, Racoo Charles & The Moke Folk, Stuart Orchard and Pro Amateur. CATHERINE TRAICOS NEW ALBUM Perth blues/alt-rock artist Catherine Traicos will mark the launch of her new album, Brave The Good Dark, with a free live performance as part of RTRFM’S Harbour Sundays series on January 31. Brave The Good Dark marks the first release in two years for the acclaimed and talented singer/ songwriter, whose previous five releases have provided an elegant mix of raw and delicately confessional lyrics and music have made her a talent to look out for. Brave The Good Dark will be released on Sunday, January 31 via iTunes and Bandcamp. Catherine Traicos Pic: Caitlin Worthington

The first Girlpool EP was recorded in a day-and-a-half and distributed on cassette in 2014 (before its re-release on Witchita Recordings). It included Blah Blah Blah and Slutmouth, two unapologetic declarations of feminist independence from two very talented young women. If unpolished, if slightly belligerent, the EP felt very honest. It was followed in 2015 by the first Girlpool album, Before The World Was Big, which kept the intimacy and immediacy of their earlier songs while exploring a wider scope of emotions. Tividad and Tucker believe that their power comes from embracing creativity. “When I’m making anything I feel — this is going to sound really corny, probably — eternal. It’s like time doesn’t exist,” Tividad

Timeless Cat Forever the funkateer, Damon ‘Dam-Funk’ Garrett Riddick heads to the Ezra Pound Block Party on Saturday, January 6. RIP NICHOLSON reports. Before releasing his latest album, Invite The Light, last September off Stones Throw Records, Damon ‘Dam-Funk’ Garrett Riddick collabed with Snoop Dogg on the joint funk-rap album, 7 Days Of Funk. As both natives of Los Angeles, California, born in ‘71 - and artists of about the funkiest shit to ever drop from the West Coast - Riddick insists the coming-together was strictly organic when Snoop dropped by his digs alone. No management, no label interference, just Snoop and a fat bag of weed. “The first song we ever did was Hit The Pavement in my house and he came over in his Porsche. We put the microphone to him and he just spit,” regales Riddick. “A lot of weed was smoked and what was left behind inspired other tracks he did later on for my album.” Invite The Light, while presenting as a futuristic album through its innovative funk exploration, begins by paying back to the origins of funk on which it was based. “This generation, it seems like everybody thinks they came up with 10

everything and they just don’t care about the past. I’m not old school or new school — I’m just a timeless cat, and it’s like where I was raised in my neighbourhood you’re supposed to give back to the people who opened up doors for you. You are not supposed to just start doing stuff and just forget who helped you get to the point where you are at now.” Riddick is touching down in January for the Sydney Festival and here in Perth at the Ezra Pound Block Party. “Every show is unique from itself. I never have, like, a pre-recorded show waiting for the crowd. It’s always different and spontaneous.” “It can be a trick, very much onyour-heels type situation, like a rollercoaster. But, that’s the thrill of it. I wanna stay as an

GIRLPOOL Fluid Space Simone Ubaldi talks to Girlpool chicks Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker about spaces between people, the space of creativity and spaces in conversation.

Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker are Girlpool — a minimalist indie-punk duo from Los Angeles that rose up out of SXSW 2015. They have an unmistakable sound — a bleating harmonic vocal backed by spare notes from Tividad’s bass and Tucker’s Dam-Funk guitar. No drums. It could so easily be aggravating, their spare nasal whine, but Girlpool songs have a beguiling sincerity. The melodies are simple but the feelings run deep. Tividad and Tucker met at The Smell — a DIY arts and music venue in Downtown LA where creative kids network and put bands together. The girls clicked immediately, both as friends and songwriters, spending endless hours in Tucker’s living room writing tunes for their artist where I feel it’s fun and intriguing and challenging. Not where it’s easy. ‘Ah, let me go debut, self-titled EP. “I think that Cleo and up here and do the set I did in the last city’ — I I have a very special chemistry in terms of can’t do that because I’m still enjoying this as communicating and accepting and loving “We’re well. I’m still finding it exciting for me so I try each other,” Tividad explains. at completely opposite ends of the spectrum to make each city a special experience.” and some things, and with some things we’re so close it’s unbelievable. We love to explore those spaces between us.” WWW. XP RE SS MAG.COM. AU

says. “When you’re involved in creating something, it’s the only thing you can feel or see or embody at that moment.” Tucker feels the same — as though she is drifting in space. “I feel like creating is the highest epitome of being and not being at the same time. It’s all fluid. It’s a space where there is only space.”

Where Have You Been All My Life? Domino

Self-Titled Seasons Of Mist

‫( ۺ‬Blackstar) Columbia

Time Equals Function Igloo

More consistent yet less successful than his Irish counterpart Damien Rice, Conor O’Brien’s Villagers have long deserved further inspection. This compilation of sorts captures choice selections from O’Brien’s three albums performed live in the studio, somewhat homogenised to suit the more delicate form of last year’s Darling Arithmetic. It’s a successful approach where tunes from that particular album are concerned (the aching title track in particular stands out) but saps energy unnecessarily from some earlier tracks like That Day. Still, the band is note perfect and O’Brien’s voice undeniably affecting, giving these songs a second life they richly deserve.

On his very first solo album Abbath proves that he was the songwriting heart of Immortal. Here the corpse-painted one delivers an album that could have snugly fitted into his old band’s discography. More Sons Of Northern Darkness than Battles In The North (not to mention hints of the dirty Motorhead-styled stomp of his I project on the likes of Winter Bane), this material is epic, gritty and even joyous all at the same time. Melding raw black metal with the melodic flourishes of classic metal on the likes of Fenrir Hunts and the winter-obsessed Root Of The Mountain, Abbath proves that despite the drama in his life he remains lord of Blashyrkh.

He has sadly left us, but he also left us this. David Bowie’s ‫ۺ‬ is a dark, torturous romp across seven jazzy and avant-garde tracks. Collaborating with a host of musicians, including multi-instrumentalist Donny McCaslin, Bowie succeeds at going completely off the wall while still retaining the essence of his signature sound. Each track on the album features its own oddities and absurdities, but three elements remain present throughout: dissonant, proggy saxophone flourishes; looping drum tracks and Bowie’s sublime, weathered voice. An enigma to the end, ‫ۺ‬ is a fierce, enchanting and honest release.

It’s a ballsy move to reform a band that was so beloved almost two decades prior, but Turnstyle have upped the ante and released a new album, Time + Function, their first release since 2001’s Turnstyle Country. In the late ‘90s the band were both triple j and RTRFM favourites and this album would certainly restore them as such (albeit to double j in this modern era). What you have here is a wink to the Turnstyle of yore (Where To Begin, Call To Arms, Walk A Mile) with a stylistic nod to a matured present (Fast Wash, Throw Long Belong). Worthy and relevant in the ‘90s and the ‘10s? Turnstyle - they deed it.

LOUISE LOVE Love Comes Back Electronic pop artist, Louise Love, launches her new EP, Tantric Shuffle, at Mojos on Wednesday, January 27. TIM MAYNE reports. Louise Love admits she picked a crazy time of year to release her latest EP, Tantric Shuffle, and start touring. “I am very busy at the moment organising the release and the tour for January, so it is all systems go and I picked a crazy time of year (being Christmas) so it’s fun!” she laughs. Tantric Shuffle is to be released on iTunes and other platforms on January 15, her second release off the back of her first album, First Day, in 2014, which received critical acclaim. Love will be familiar to Perth audiences having grown up in Fremantle, playing in bands since she was 17 years-old, including Lowdown and Louise Love & The Hates. “Working with bands helped me to develop my musicality and to manage music and we were always very indie, putting on our own gigs and managing our own business. “I still do a lot of that side of it but now I have been doing electronic music I find that I really like the sound of the music before that it was not quite there.” Love says she had some classic influences which drove her to pursue a career 12

in the music industry. “I really love good strong pop songs - Eurythmics and Blondie and Bjork were early influences and I love great writers like Radiohead, which is my favourite band and more recently LCD Sound System and a group from Portland called Yacht have inspired me.” Love decided to make the leap first to Tasmania in 2013 but now resides in Melbourne. “The move to Tassie was great and that was where I started to perform solo and it is such a cool community. I would email someone about getting a gig and they would get back to me that day. “I have been in Melbourne for just over a year now and the underground Louise Love

electronic scene is very exciting and lots of solo artists coming out - enough to sustain the scene.” Love says she is very much looking forward to performing in her home town of Fremantle, her first appearance as a solo artist. “I haven’t done it with this act but am really excited and really looking forward to it and have played at Mojos a few times in different outfits and is a great sized venue.”

ALBERT HAMMOND JR The Fun Never Stopped On rehab, Albert Hammond Jr confesses to BRYGET CHRISFIELD, “Sometimes I laugh at the triumph of it.” Albert Hammond Jr’s stunning Momentary Masters album is dedicated to a late friend of his named Sarah Jones. “We just shared things for two weeks and then she died and I kept on goin’,” Hammond Jr shares. Her memory also lives on through his lyrical content. “There’s a line in that song Touché that’s in quotes, it’s from one of her poems: ‘I forgave you long before I met you for the things that you were bound to do’. “I dedicated the record wishing that I could’ve hung out with her and had a long conversation with her about it like we did before,” he laments. Hammond Jr admits his friend’s death made him “really pissed off” at the time. “When she died I was just like, ‘You left me with all these assholes’,” he laughs. “I could really be myself around her, which is really nice.” He’s been in and out of rehab and when told we’re sorry to hear that, Hammond Jr reassures, “Oh no, it was great!”

WWW. XP RE SS MAG.COM. AU

On his recovery timeline, Hammond Jr reveals, “I started at 25 and I went to, like, a little outpatients thing and then you sort of start and stop, but it’s not a big deal. And then at 27 or something like that I stopped for another little bit ‘cause just, like, I’d had enough. And then eventually you always get to the point where something happens and it gets you to stop for a bit, but then you go back. But it’s like a broken record in your head, um, and, yeah! And then I guess that last time I’d really just gotten to the point where I wasn’t even gettin’ high so much as I was just destroying myself; I wasn’t functioning or really doing anything. “I mean, it was what I ended up needing. I obviously got to the point where I couldn’t help myself without that extreme

form, but it was all self-inflicted. Sometimes I laugh at the triumph of it, because, you know, ah, it’s just funny... As dark as those times were and how much emotion was felt, it really was fun to kinda have that time to do that. Maybe ‘fun’ is the wrong word.”

How do you mourn an immortal? It was a long-running (semi) joke that musical icon David Bowie was something more than human, but the real world result of that bit of rock’n’roll mythologising is that news of his death has proved very difficult to deal with. Not Bowie. Not now. Not at the relatively young age of 69. Mere humans succumb to cancer. Pansexual alien pop gods do not. But the man born David Robert Jones in Brixton on January 8, 1947, did die, on January 10, 2016, days after releasing Blackstar, the album that now serves as his epitaph. The album’s producer, longtime collaborator Tony Visconti, has confirmed that this was intentional; Bowie wished to put the final punctuation mark on his own life, to definitively sign his name at the bottom of the canvas. As a final public act, as an artistic working, it is devastatingly powerful. And so we mourn. But for whom? We, as fans, cannot mourn Bowie on a personal level; we simply did not know him personally. More, the man’s mercurial public persona means we all cry for a different Bowie. Is your Bowie a red-haired

folk troubadour, a blue-eyed soul singer, a slick-suited pop star? Is he Aladdin Sane, Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke? Is he an Outsider, a Lodger, a Pin Up, a Goblin King? Who was your first Bowie?

WRITING A BOOK

the reader begins to suspect they shouldn’t trust her version of events. Nothing is more of a mind flip than finishing a story, rereading the first chapter, and realising you had absolutely no idea what the hell was going on. A lot of modern storytelling relies on regular patterns - it’s when you play with them that things get interesting. With my young adult novel, Otherplace, the structure and approach was a stylistic contrast. For starters, the story was clearly linear: more of a ‘what you see is what you get’ experience. I wrote a book that would have appealed to me when I was 15: a coming of age journey, with a twist at the end (apparently I can’t resist them). Mixing the fantastical and the futuristic, personal growth and adventure, the lead character, Hellen, travels around the sometimes magical, occasionally nightmarish land of Otherplace. In this world people who don’t figure out where they belong are ‘faded’ by Place Police. A few characters suffer supernatural curses, others travel through computer wires, and one even carries Death inside him. Prince Charming is bespelled with a changing face, Modules pay a price for perfection, and a

An Author’s View A good many people feel that they have a book in them, but actually writing one is a whole other matter. X-Press Magazine contributor, GILLIAN O’MEAGHER, has written two books - a sci-fi story and a young adult novel - and gives an insight into the process. Writing a young adult novel proved noticeably different to writing a speculative fiction novel. My sci-fi book, Sound, is set in a future city where the genetically viable turn sound into energy. Essentially people live on music, and the tunes they choose to feed on alter their personalities. The story is full of tropes that never unravel the way the reader expects, a series of minor twists, and one hell of a reveal. The character, Ces, is an unreliable narrator; meaning partway through the novel

He was all those things, of course, and a father, husband and friend. He was also, whatever face he wore, the patron saint of the weird and disenfranchised. Not in any mean or self-loathing manner; Bowie’s lasting legacy is the lesson that not only can we accept and even love our

own strangeness, we can let it elevate us. Countless teenagers, questioning their sexuality, their psychology, their very humanity, have cleaved to his music through the long, lonely adolescent night and found something comforting. Something that said difference was not to be derided, but celebrated. David Bowie taught us that loving the alien was, in fact, loving ourselves. Bowie leaves behind an incredible body of work, encompassing 25 studio albums and countless side projects, one-offs, film appearances and artistic explorations, waiting for the next generation of strange visitors to discover them - and they will. There will be never be a time when nobody is listening to David Bowie. There will never be a time when his singular example of selfacceptance and selfinvention will not be needed. But there will never be another David Bowie, and we were lucky to have him. TRAVIS JOHNSON

mysterious guy with two different coloured eyes keeps showing up. With young adult novels, people seem more prone to excusing impulsiveness and naivety in a character. The romance is simpler and newer; there’s a sense of novelty to the experience. Each lead character has emotional baggage, but Sound is a darker dystopia, and Ces’ “journey” is a more complex exploration of the psyche. Sleeping Beauty references are rife, but nearly all my novels and scripts make allusions to that particular classic, like a (fairytaleesque) trademark. Grief, love, loss, and Sound by Gil Liane sacrifice are themes that thread through both stories, because, well, they thread through a lot of life, too. Sound and Otherplace by Gil Liane are currently available on Amazon Kindle.

ALL OUR EXES LIVE IN TEXAS Fremantle Arts Centre Sunday, January 10, 2016 As the impact of the fires in the South West of the state became evident, and a sombre tone hit throughout the state, music was again a fine medicine and the picturesque surrounds of the Fremantle Arts Centre was the place to be. With regular visits to WA over the past year, All Our Exes Live In Texas have built quite the following. It would be hard to remember a time when the courtyard has been so full for one of these free Sunday afternoon concerts. The band that started as a one-off when a friend requested the four Sydneybased folk singers join forces, has grown into a full-time project. Usually a four piece, the group were without Katie Wighton for this outing. Although stating this was a daunting proposition, the trio appeared to cover the loss of her voice and guitar with ease as the three remaining vocalists bounced off each other like cousins at Christmas.

The three members of the band were having as much fun chatting with the audience and giggling with glee as they were playing their brand of traditional sounding folk tunes. With a couple of hours to kill, All Our Exes Live In Texas played two sets that were as relaxed as they were tuneful. Previous single, Sailboat, was the high point of the first set with its prevalent mandolin and ukulele, although in truth there was no low point of the day. When returning after the break, Elana Stone took the role as front person as her diminutive stature belies her strong effervescent personality. With a tambourine on her foot adding percussion and a piano accordion strapped to her small frame, she was full of life during the band’s renowned take on The White Stripes’ Hotel Yorba. Showing that they are a fun event for the whole family, they finished with a brisk take of I’m My Own Grandpa before heading to the side of the stage to sign CDs and chat to punters in the warm sun. With a debut album due in the next few months, there are bound to be more opportunities to experience All Our Exes Live In Texas in all their melodic glory. If this sunny Sunday was anything to go by, you would be foolish to miss them CHRIS HAVERCROFT

THE REVENANT The Bear Necessities Directed by Alejandro G Inarritu Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domnhall Gleeson Loosely based on the true tale of 19th century trapper Hugh Glass, The Revenant is an almost impossible tale of survival in a harsh and unexplored wilderness. After their hunting camp comes under attack by Native Americans, a group of trappers is forced to flee hundreds of miles back to the safety of Fort Kiowa in South Dakota. When their guide Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is mauled by a bear, he is abandoned by the men set to care for him. Surviving, Glass sets across country fuelled by revenged. There is an undeniable harsh beauty about this film. Not just in the stunning scenery, or the immaculate composition (shot entirely under natural lighting conditions). Rather in the way Inarritu forces the audience to become immersed within a scene. With his long takes and meticulous sense of detail and place (at all times are you aware of the surroundings) the audience is transported into the space. They become witnesses, forced to experience the moment. At times this becomes excruciating, as the violence in the scene is dragged out such as in the infamous bear attack sequence,

20

which stretches for minutes as the bear returns multiple times to maul DiCaprio’s character. It’s uncomfortable, it’s confronting, but it makes you re-evaluate how you actually view a film. Instead of being aware of concerns of narrative and plot, it becomes a much more mindful process, as you become lost in those moments. The Revenant delights in this ambiguity. It is an American frontier film without a tumbleweed in sight. A revenge film that contemplates the cost on the soul. It’s a story of survival that borders on the supernatural in a place that is on the edge of the known world. The results are nothing short The Revenant

of phenomenal as the film keeps you locked in place, enraptured by the events that befall Glass. The care and detail of this film, during convoluted shoots and harsh conditions on set, is the sort of thing that is already becoming the stuff of legend. The end product however, is a thing of breath taking beauty and raw power. DAVID O’CONNELL

MIA MADRE Mother Dearest Directed by Nanni Moretti Starring Margherita Buy, John Turturro, Nanni Moretti Life has a few surprises for Margherita (Margherita Buy) . Her film is starting to go off kilter as her star, American actor Barry Huggins (John Turturro), is proving difficult to work with, and equally odd off the set. Her mother is in hospital and doesn’t seem to be recovering as fast as she expected. Her family is being difficult as always, from her golden boy brother to her unsure teenage daughter. As things start to spiral for Margherita, she has to work out what is really important to her, and how she can handle a loss she knows is own the horizon. Mia Madre is the sort of film that comes into focus with the very last frame and forces the audience to cast their mind back to understand the full relevance of the work. Finally with all the pieces in place, you can understand the emotional impact and processes of the central character. It is a task that director Nanni Moretti does not simplify for audiences. His film is packed with distractions, from the extraordinarily surreal task of making a film, to a rich and confronting dream world launched into at almost any time. Mia Madre is also an intensely

WWW. XP RE SS MAG.COM. AU

personal work in many ways, with parts of the story reflecting Moretti’s own experience. Here it is gender flipped with Margherita Buy taking on the role of the struggling director trying to balance family and the pressures of making a film (Moretti instead casts himself in the smaller role of the brother). Buy’s creation is affable, but slowly being swamped by the various stresses of her life. As she struggles with the demands of a film set, an out of control actor (Turturro in fine form), her daughter’s future education and her mother’s declining health, she begins to prioritise and evaluate her life. At times Mia Madre is oddly patchy in terms of tone, not really balancing the hectic comedy of the set sequences with the more sombre tones of the mother’s hospital room. Still that dichotomy helps to emphasis the different parts of her life, and gets a pay-off in the final work sequence, as Margherita gets some tragic news on set, and is emotionally supported by her crew. A moving and occasionally humorous film about the various pressures of life. Mia Madre requires some work from the viewer, but rewards in kind. DAVID O’CONNELL

Madre Mia screens at UWA’s Somerville Auditorium from until January 17 and ECU Joondalup Pines from January 19 - January 24 as part of the Perth International Arts Festival’s Lotterywest Festival Films season.

ALEJANDRO GONZALEZ INARITTU The Revenant From his feature debut Amores Perros to award season darling Birdman, Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu has always sought to push the limits of both himself and his medium. His latest film, the historical survival drama The Revenant, is no exception. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, The Revenant is the story of Hugh Glass, a tracker and trapper in early 19th century America, who is left to die by his companions after he is mauled by a bear. Miraculously surviving his horrific injuries, he makes an epic journey through the wilderness to take revenge on the men who abandoned him. “I think I made the film that I wanted to make and that we all wanted to make, really.” Inarittu says. “There were no secrets. There were no dirty games. It was very clear what kind of story it was. “I had the support and the passion and the backing of the studio. They trusted in it. And so did the actors. It was a mutual trust that gave us the film we all wanted.” The thing is, making that film involved extensive location shooting across Canada, the United States and Argentina, a grueling production schedule made all the more difficult by the decision to shoot using only natural light. “I think it was a very obvious choice,” Inarittu says of the choice. “You know, first of all, there is no way to light a forest! Having the sun, you know, that’s enough light. And the complexity of that light and the beauty of that light can never be matched by artificial light. Because we were shooting in winter we knew that by 3pm it was dark. By 2.30pm there was no light under the trees. And the locations were often so remote that by the time we arrived we had to be ready: we would rehearse and rehearse so we were ready because we would just have an hour, maybe an hour and a half to shoot very long takes in a just a couple of takes.” Luckily he had a skilled collaborator in Director Of Photography Emmanuel Lubezki, with whome he’d previously worked on last year’s Birdman. Inarittu describes him as “...a master of light. Not only does he have an incredible technical knowledge of how light works and what is the complexity of light and how you can use light to your benefit, but I think we have a very similar

point-of-view in how things work. For this project we decided to apply many things that we’d learned together in Birdman and use them here in a very different way.” Inarittu also shot the film in sequence, to better track the emotional journey of DiCaprio’s wounded warrior. “I want to learn as we are shooting, you know? Shooting in sequence allows me and the actors to keep finding opportunities to adapt, to rewrite, to polish and find beautiful things that can be added as the journey’s going on.” It was a journey across a vast number of locations, many of them extremely remote and difficult to access with a large cast and crew, making the whole project a huge logistical challenge. “I started scouting locations five years ago, because I knew that it would require close to 100 locations. And it’s not like shooting in a city where you can say, ‘Okay we need a bar, we need a building, we need an apartment, we need a taxi,’ you know? But when you have a film that is in an autumn and a winter, and it goes from deep woods with huge trees to the plains, and ends up in the Rockies, and then in the middle of a valley… the distance between those locations, the logistics involved in simply going from one little hill to a creek with snow are massive, and are even more Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu

difficult with a crew and camera and cranes etc. And then every location, in a way, has to be in the right place to shoot with the right light, at the right hour. What I’m saying is it was complex, but I knew that the landscapes and these locations would not be ‘just’ locations, they would basically be characters in the film that will embrace the character, or damage him, or transform him, or give him shelter, or give him a nightmare, or protect him or threaten him. The landscapes would be a huge part of what the submersion of the audience will be, so I knew that I needed very special landscapes, very remote, untouched, that didn’t look like you had seen them in other films. It was incredibly challenging, but absolutely worth it, I think.”

WAM SONG OF THE YEAR The Song, Not The Singer Entries are once again open for the WAM Song Of The Year competition and the multitude of accolades and prizes (cash, recording time, etc) contained within. WAM Industry Development Officer, Claire Hodgson, has overseen the Song Of The Year for the last few years and it’s taught her much about the state of WA songwriting. “It’s been remarkable seeing how many passionate songwriters are constantly creating new music here in WA,” she says, “just the sheer volume of it. And it’s really exciting because it shows we have a very vibrant music scene here in the West! It definitely gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling, too.” What has also been pleasing for Hodgson and WAM is seeing artists who have won in various genre categories go onto kick further goals, often with help from their prizes. “Yes, very much so,” Hodgson concurs. “Song Of The Year helps artists

who are already doing great things get to where they want to be faster, with the prizes and extra publicity assisting in a big way. It’s really useful for the industry development work we do at WAM too, because it shows us who’s currently doing interesting work in their genre and we can then recommend these artists for consideration when other opportunities arise. “The competition also values songwriting, not an artist’s profile, so it can be really fantastic to see relatively unknown songwriters getting nominated, with the competition providing them the platform to take their music to the next level.” For bands who are thinking of entering but aren’t quite sure, Hodgson has this advice. “You’d probably spend more on your weekly rehearsal,” she says, “so just do it! It’s not just about winning, either. Simply being nominated can be really useful for your music career because of the free publicity

JOSÉ JAMES Old Soul Pic: Janette Beckman

Ahead of his Saturday, February 20, performance at Chevron Festival Gardens for PIAF, José James chats to JAI CHOUHAN about his ascension through the jazz ranks, his influences and what he’s got in store for the future. As a jazz singer and bandleader in the 21st century, José James offers listeners a refreshing blend of contemporary jazz and hip-hop.

Singing from a young age, James went on to attend The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Now with six albums under his belt, he’s looking to the future with a new direction and sound for the years to come. Releasing his first album, The Dreamer, on Bronswood Recordings, label of walking music encyclopaedia, Gilles Peterson, James speaks highly of the British DJ. “I really owe him a lot for introducing me to the world. He brought me

all through Europe, my first shows in Tokyo, introduced me to all these great producers and DJs all over the world. It was a really special time in my life and I’m extremely lucky to have met Gilles. He’s always been a good advisor to me.” Going on to release albums on the likes of Impulse! And Blue Note, James has since established himself as a staple of modern jazz. But it’s not to say that the golden era is lost on the vocalist, he often states the likes of John Coltrane and other greats as a massive influence on his work.

In fact, James released Yesterday I Had the Blues, homage to the great Billie Holiday. “She had a life that for most of us would be debilitating. She not only survived her childhood and early years, but she became the most famous and highest paid black entertainer in the world. She championed for equal rights and social rights for people until the day she died, you’ve got to admire that.” Continued on page 30...

And as for himself, José James has a new direction for the New Year, focusing on Outside of jazz, José James notes that social rights and appropriately adjusting the scope of his music. hip-hop has been another major influence on “We’re at a tipping point with him and it shines through in his music. cultural policy in America. Specifically, I “It’s the music of my generation. I think it’s a time where audiences can speak grew up with a classic album every month, be it A Tribe Called José J ames | Pic: Janette Beckman Quest or Beastie Boys or whoever.” Raised in the heyday of ‘90s hip-hop, the jazz singer quickly fell in love with the art of sampling and it soon sparked his initial interest in jazz music. “I didn’t understand it was sampling at first. You’d hear a sample of these beautiful jazz and soul tracks and it’d open a whole new world for me. I came to jazz through hip-hop.“ Looking ahead, James speaks of jazz in the 20th century and its place in more truthfully to power. So, I’m planning to contemporary music. “I think depending on what you call spend 2016 teasing a new project that will be an album in 2017 called Love In A Time Of ‘jazz’. There’s always going to be colourful Madness. It’ll be more progressive, more RnB, bands and projects. It’s more a thing to just see the influence of jazz in new places. To me more political in scope.” it’s like a new freedom, it’s not about a genre it’s about the attitude, whether it’s with a band or a laptop, it’s the same energy, same expression.”

Gear and tech reviews by Chris Gibbs FENDER JIMI HENDRIX STRATOCASTER Honouring the guitar legend who popularised the Stratocaster guitar and its tremendous sonic flexibility, the Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster from Fender gives players the same incendiary tone and feel to make their own. With vintage tone and classic style, this guitar boasts classy signature touches and unique features based on Hendrix’ distinctive ‘flipped-over’ guitars. The foundation of Hendrix’s genuinely original sound and playing style was his habit of flipping his guitars over and restringing them to accommodate his lefthanded playing, resulting in a reverse headstock and bridge pickup, of which both features have been reproduced on this guitar in great detail. The reverse headstock therefore produces a longer string length for the bass strings, creating a tighter playing feel along with easier bending and vibrato on the treble strings. Loaded with American Vintage ’65 single-coil pickups including a reverse-slant bridge pickup, the instrument produces inspiring tone with tight, warm sounds and enhanced definition. The highly versatile 9.5”-radius C-shaped maple neck with medium jumbo frets affords players a flatter playing surface ideal for 26

chord work while allowing for excellent bending during solos. Added to all of this, the fact that the controls have been left in the traditional position rather than where they would end up on a truly flipped guitar provides guitarists with the best of both worlds in terms of control and playability. With unique features such as the reverse headstock, reverse-angled bridge pickup, Jimi Hendrix Signature on the headstock, engraved neck plate with Hendrix’ likeness, aged white pickup covers, control knobs and switch tip, the single ‘Wing’ string tree and a choice between the classic colours black or Olympic White, the

decided together and brought forth. It was first intended to be the follow up album for 2011’s A Touch Of Death. People thought the same thing with the EP title, Game Over, but we are Reapers Riddle. In some way or another our titles have always been about death or the end.

Describe the journey taken to get to this point - the actual release of the album? It’s been an amazing journey, expensive, but amazing. We have put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make this album as big, interesting and diverse as possible as a local band. We set a deadline and wrote our asses off to put together this 65-minute album, The End Is Nigh. It’s been amazing, as always, working with Rob Agostini and all the Reapers who joined us in the studio to make this album not just a CD, but a celebration of the many years we have spent rocking the Reaper.

SOUTH WEST BUSHFIRES FUNDRAISER Jack Rabbit Slims Saturday, January 9, 2016

The tragedy of the South West bushfires this year unfortunately eventuated in this year’s annual Southbound festival being cancelled. However a handful of artists and venues alike have pushed through to hold several fundraising events in support of the communities affected. The newly established Jack Rabbit Slim’s hosted a night featuring some of the most exciting acts on the line-up to a good cause. Scottish alternative hip hop quartet Young Fathers took the stage up first, making their ominous presence felt. A brilliant set full of energy and masterfully layered vocals with all the members with a mic in hand. Playing underground hits from their latest critically acclaimed album, White Men Are Black Men

Too, and a myriad of singles off their stellar mixtape releases. Local boys Koi Child brought the ruckus up next as the whole venue erupted in dance. The lads did well to further hype their impending debut, of course produced by one Kevin Parker himself, however due to sound issues did not give the strongest performance of their newborn career. Electronic producer Loston brought his decks on stage and set the now brimming dance floor ablaze with an hour-long set of danceable and tasteful tracks. The crowd erupted into applause as ‘surprise act’ Foals and Disclosure took over the decks, playing tastefully selected dance tracks back to back, into the sunrise. This busy, good-spirited and energetic fundraiser was an overall successful night for artists, fans and venue alike. JAMES ENDERBY

CHAINSAW HOOKERS FAREWELL SHOW OHM RUNE/Silver Foxes/EMU Experts/The Decline The Boston Friday, January 8, 2016 After 10 solid years of kicking ass, Perth’s Chainsaw Hookers have decided to take a break - indefinitely. Joined by four of the best acts in Perth, the band said farewell with a final show at The Boston. Opening up the night were newcomers OHM RUNE - and these guys are heavy! The two-piece stoner rock outfit saw to it that everyone in the room had their ear drums obliterated by a wall of noise. The band is fronted by Alex Cotton, who plays lead guitar

in both Chainsaw Hookers and Scalphunter, proving that he is not only just as incredible at playing bass/guitar, but is also a solid vocalist. As the crowd started to get a little larger, Silver Foxes took to the stage. Not only are their songs are short, fast and catchy-as-hell, but you can tell these guys love doing what they do, and it makes them

all the more enjoyable. Emu Experts were up next playing a solid set that got a big response from the crowd. The Decline got pretty close to playing 100 shows in 2015, so it’s impressive that they can still jump on stage and play a fun and exciting show. They touched on fan-favourites from across all three of their albums and threw down some pretty hilarious banter in between songs. With a large crowd at the front of the room it was time for Chainsaw Hookers to take to the stage for the last time. They kicked things off with Make Them Die Slowly before smashing through a bunch of old and new favourites including Party Man and Never Sleep Again. The crowd rushed the stage for their penultimate song, Black Christmas, fans grabbing the microphones and singing along, others hugging the band on stage. It was chaos, but all in the name of fun. Just as it

seemed as the boys were going to leave the stage for the last time, they launched into a cover of Kiss’ Love Gun and set the madness into motion again. It was a perfect send-off for one of the best bands in the country - here’s hoping that it’s not the last we see of them. DAVE MULLINS

JAMIE XX / FOUR TET Belvoir Amphitheatre Saturday, January 2, 2016 Touring on the back of his acclaimed debut, Jamie Smith of The XX fame has claimed fans from across the musical spectrum with his unique, ‘90s rave influenced sound that takes in elements from many genres, and judging by the sold-out crowd of 5000 at Belvoir on the first Saturday of the year, he’s hit on a winning formula. Given Smith’s talent for playing live beats and steel drum, the fact that it was his album tour, and the hefty ticket price, it would have been fair to assume he would be incorporating some live elements in his show. It was a little disappointing then, when it became apparent that Jamie and Four Tet were performing DJ sets. Though judging by the comments and smiles plastered across faces leaving the venue, most fans didn’t mind. It also gave the artists a chance to play a broader range of music, and being of the finest pedigree, they were packing a great selection of vinyl and

Jamie XX Pic: Matsu Phography

CDs for our enjoyment. Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet should need no introduction for any fan of electronic music – so it was shame it seemed a fair portion of the crowd didn’t arrive ‘til late into his set. A perfect warm-up of smoothly mixed beats, ranging from the awesome C2 remix of Caribou’s Your Love Will Set You Free and Floating Points’ Nuits Sonores, to the disco-soul sounds of Brutal Force’s Dreams For Sale. By the end, Hebden had a huge crowd grooving as the sun set. Winding up with his track Ba Teaches Yoga he handed over to Smith who started his set fittingly with his Four Tet collaboration, Seesaw. As the track kicked in, the crowd roared, the lights went up and the true magic of Belvoir was revealed. While it was no masterclass in mixing, Smith’s tune selection was diverse and eclectic. As well as his penchant for UK garage and 2-Step, he moved from the Todd Terje disco remix of The Units’ old track High Pressure Days to the horn-led funk of Double Exposure’s Everyman. Along with the vinyl revival, there seems to be a soul revival going on of late. Following an Avalanches medley, he picked things up with the majestic The Rest Is Noise, the huge Koze remix of Moderat’s Bad Kingdom and brought it down with Radiohead’s Everything In Its Right Place, before abruptly kicking in with Gosh. Continuing the rave vibe with a big jungle tune he worked the crowd into a frenzy before the steel drum sounds of Obvs announced Good Times which had everyone on their feet. ALFRED GORMAN 28

GOLD SUNS SINGLE LAUNCH Stuart Orchard/The Durongs/Shimmergloom Mojos Bar Sunday, January 10 2016 Strangely familiar newcomers Gold Suns chose Mojo’s Bar in Fremantle as the venue for the launch of their much anticipated single, Broken Hearts Club’ on Sunday night. The night started with some excellent support acts, including Stuart Orchard who performed solo with his guitarist, providing a soundscapes and an ambient mood early on in the night. Fremantle locals The Durongs came on the stage next and played a short, laidback set of roots music with a saxophonist and singer with a huge set of lungs and a groovy sound, setting a mellow mood on a Sunday night. Shimmergloom upped the tempo and the volume ahead of the headline act and had the audience bopping along to some inspiring alternative tunes, particularly Suffocate and Unfamiliar Nights. Then the lights dimmed and it was the Gold Suns’ turn to take the stage encouraged by a rousing round of applause. Vocalists and guitar and bass players Jenna Pozzi and Sarah Norton, who were formerly in The Government, showed that time had not diminished their tight playing skills and stunning vocal abilities, belting out some truly catchy numbers. The sounds produced during

their set were crisp, clear and tight, helped by the backing of former touring member of Eskimo Joe - Fergus Deasy on guitar and some solid drumming from Paul Stokes. Songs included Blackout, the guitarblasting track Potential and Alone which had a ‘90s feel, starting slow but ripping into some great guitar solos. The Gold Suns picked the tempo with Awaken, followed by Beautiful Girl which showcased the lyrical abilities of Pozzi and Norton. Gold Suns Pic: Tim Mayne

The announcement of the debut single, Broken Hearts Club, was met with enthusiasm and punters hitting the dancefloor. The set finished with the upbeat poppy song Big Goodbye which it indeed was.
