Editor’s Letter We’ve had lots of changes here at XF over the past year. New editor, new logo, new direction and best of all, new collaborations! With all these changes, comes a wave of excitement as we are walking into new territory and creating a fresh vision, which really is what fashion is all about. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, iconic fashion retailer LIVE has been instrumental in building and being at the forefront of the Australian Nightlife fashion scene. Looking to the future and wanting to change things up and keep moving forward alongside their stylish customers, it was just a matter of time before LIVE and XF decided to collaborate and bring you all something unique, and here it is! Our limited edition fashion magazine - XF project LIVE.

9

With the retail chain stocking a cool mix of national and international labels and each store bursting with the hottest trends, we wanted to inspire you to get excited for winter with an edgy, new LIVE wardrobe that carries some real street style swag. Shot in the stomping grounds of Northbridge, our Hit The Streets fashion editorial takes a real candid approach to fashion. We were lucky enough to work with stylish West Coast Eagle, Sharrod Wellingham, who together with his amazing look and easy confidence was a complete natural in front of the camera. Our girls strutted their stuff in oversized woollen numbers, super fitted denim, lots of soft leathers and my personal favourite (a must-try this winter!) the little matching stripe set. We also take a closer look at the key trends of the season, explore the sprawling Perth nightlife scene, speak to Reuben Styles from electronic duo, Peking Duk, and give you the lowdown on the best current beauty and grooming products to keep a good face. So enjoy this limited edition collaboration of XF project LIVE Magazine – 48 pages of beauty, trends, buys and inspiration!

Whether you want to sharpen up your working wardrobe or liven up your street styling, coordinates are the way to go. One of the hottest trends of the season, this look is all about mixing same prints, patterns, colours or textures to give a very matchymatchy look. If you are looking to ease yourself into the matching separates trend, go for a boxy crop top or and matching pencil skirt in muted tones or opt for a pattern that isn’t to over powering like a stripe or a subtle animal print.

In the mood for a Glamorous night out with the girls? Or maybe something a bit more casual but utterly cool? We check out some of the most stylish and sexy bars in Perth and give you some fashionable tips to match.

BEST FOR ROOFTOP FUN

MECHANICS INSTITUTE 222 William Street, Northbridge T: 08 9228 4189 Sneakily head around the back of 222 William Street and, in a small alley way between James and Francis, you will find the entry for this fantastic little spot. A combination of roof-top ambience mixed with Melbourne type grit, this bar is becoming a regular fav with all the cool kids. Initially more of a wine bar, the drinks menu quickly expanded to include some of the most interesting (and well priced) cocktails in Perth. It’s a real melting pot of types that come here with your cool hip-hop kids, mixed in with an everyday city crowd just looking for a great place to wet their whistle.

WHAT TO WEAR Walk in there looking very on trend with an asymmetrical skirt that has interesting detailing, and an easy to wear crop. Make sure to add some hard-wear elements through your accessories for a bit edge and then top it all off with a pair of very “now” sandal buckle heels.

INSIDERS TIP Order a mouth-watering New York Sour, take a seat in the roof-top terrace and people watch your heart out!

PARADISCO TOP $50; PLUME SKIRT $60; SENSO ROBYN SANDAL $175, ZOMP SHOES; CATS MEOW NECKLACE $12; CATS MEOW CLUTCH $40

BEST FOR EATS WITH YOUR DRINKS

KITSCH BAR 229 Oxford Street, Leederville. T: 08 9242 1229 Kitsch Bar is just that, very kitsch! The Leederville eatery and drinking hole has an underlining Asian night markets vibe taking you to the streets of Bangkok, China and Singapore from the moment you walk in. Perfect for during the week drinks with an exotic cocktail menu, it’s the type of place where understated cool is definitely appreciated. PLUME VEST $75; MADISON SQUARE SHORTS $50; ADORNE BAG $35; JORGE CAMI $49; WONKIE NERO BOOT, $420 ZOMP SHOES; EVOLUTION NECKLACE $20

WHAT TO WEAR Try some tailored leather-look shorts, teamed up with a silk tank, a fur gilet and some accessories that punch. Finish the look off with a pair of black ankle boots and there you have it; Understated Glam.

INSIDERS TIP Go for the Wok ‘N’ Wednesday special, which gives you some delicious wok fired eats and a Kitsch Ginger Beer Cocktail for $16.8O.

17

BEST FOR A NIGHT OF RETRO-GLAM

LUXE BAR 446 Beaufort Street, Highgate. T: 08 9228 9680 A cocktail haven would be the best description for Luxe Bar. A real go-to bar for new world and classic cocktails, plush tunes and slick service, this award winning bar takes care of all your night time needs in the most luxurious way. Since opening its doors in 2001, this swank lounge has earned a reputation not only for cocktails, but also its glamorous clientele, so if you are heading in for a night of decadence at Luxe, your outfit needs to match!

WHAT TO WEAR Think polished, sleek and totally sexy, and there are plenty of little cocktail dresses to take your pick from. A hint of colour never goes astray at night, and gold accessories instantly boost your outfit. Most importantly, make sure your heels are high and statement as they will be your most important finishing touch.

INSIDERS TIP Make sure to try the bar’s signature Espresso martini, and opt for it with Patron Café XO tequila as a base spirit for an unexpected but delicious surprise.

FAUX L E ATH E R The leather look isn’t just for bikers and rock stars anymore! Fiercely dominating the runway, leather styles add that bit of edge to any outfit, however real leather can be pricey and with so many qualities faux pieces available get we’d rather get the look minus the price tag. Do it in small doses and go for leather-like detailing, or if your feeling really risqué make a statement in a crazy-sexy fitted crop and skirt combo.

Black and White is one of the simplest, most cool of looks to work whatever the year and never fails to gain attention when done well. Bright whites tempered with inky blacks can be used to create a truly bold statement. There is no exact way in which you are supposed to rock the monochrome look, it is one of those trends that is so ridiculously versatile that you can translate it into your already pre-existing style. So whether you want to look good in a tailored suit like Kayne or a more street swag look like Becks, there are plenty of options to pick from.

PEKING DUK The question that can't be answered THIS TIME LAST YEAR PEKING DUK - AKA REUBEN STYLES AND ADAM HYDE - WERE ON THE BRINK OF SOMETHING BIG. FOR THREE YEARS THEY’D BEEN HARD AT IT WORKING ON RECORDINGS AND PLAYING SHOWS, BUT IN 2013 THINGS CHANGED. How? It started with two #1 ARIA Club Chart singles in The Way You Are and Feels Like, a bout of success that has already been complemented in 2014 by the Canberra boys topping the ARIA Singles Chart with High (featuring Nicole Millar). So things have changed in a year, though one thing remains the same. “Weirdly, our mindset was exactly the same then as it is right now,” says Reuben Styles. “Except we’re striving even harder to manage our time and go, ‘let’s put this two weeks aside to spend all day, every day in the studio and then do a two week tour’. We’re just figuring out how not to be lazy, I guess. We’re getting less and less lazy, which is good. That’s something we need to keep getting better at, being less and less lazy (laughs).” Peking Duk simply haven’t had enough time up their sleeves to get lazy, what with a raft of club performances, plus festival appearances at Falls Music & Arts Festival, Splendour In The Grass and the Big Day Out. The month of May sees them touring the country with the Groovin The Moo regional showcase. “It’s pretty exciting,” Styles enthuses. “We’re starting to play more festivals and starting to see people singing along with the words to our songs. It’s beautiful. We love playing shows as much as we love writing.” The duo are recently back from their second visit to the US, where they’re making more than just memories. “It’s incredible,” Styles laughs. “I don’t even know how to explain the feeling of being able to play a show in the States; being in a

whole new country where people are still jamming out to your music and running up before the set and asking you to play this certain song they like in your set. That sort of stuff is mind-blowing.” Miami seems to be a city of infinite delight for the pair, if only for who they spot in traffic. “Last year in Miami we saw Busta Rhymes driving ‘round. This year, we spotted Deadmau5... actually, we recently made a song with Laidback Luke and he was a part of one of Deadmau5’s Coffee Run videos on YouTube. “Everyone’s driving around in ridiculous rental cars. People who just want to pick up spring-breakers - the toolies of Miami, the old guys that go to schoolies - they save up to get these crazy, ridiculous rental cars so they can just loop the streets of Miami until a girl jumps in (laughs). They’re just ridiculous! But there are other sides to Miami that are just incredible, the shows they put on there are amazing.” In the meantime, with all these hit singles piling up, a lot of folks are wondering when Peking Duk are going to drop a full album... “Ahh,” ahhs Styles. “The question that can’t be answered! We’re trying to just write lots of music and what we’re gonna do is then look at our options. At the moment we’re just letting singles go, one at a time, but there’s certainly enough for us to be looking at an album some time in the near future. “As I say, it’s the question that can’t be answered (laughs).” As for their set at Groovin The Moo, you can expect a lot of Peking Duk. “There might be some hip hop, there might be some rock’n’roll, there might be some big, bangin’ electronic sounds,” Styles hints. “But at the end of the day, it’s just gonna be a real fun party.” Peking Duk perform at Groovin The Moo on Saturday, May 10, at Hay Park, Bunbury. Tickets via moshtix.com.au. BOB GORDON
