MUSIC GEAR & TECHNOLOGY
KEEPING IT KOSMIC The entire retail sector is feeling the pinch from the increasingly prevalent online shopping model, and music retail is no exception. Yet, while many other stores are downsizing, cutting costs and sometimes even succumbing to the grim meathook realities of situation, Perth’s venerable Kosmic Sound and Lighting has split from the pack, greatly expanding their Osborne Park premises into a monolithic one stop shop that contains everything a musician could want.
Photography by Daniel Grant At first glance it seems like a counterintuitive move, but Kosmic main man John Goldsmith, who was kind enough to give X-Press a personal tour of the new set up, disagrees. “As much as online sales in Australia will probably grow, as it has in America, to be 30 per cent of the market, it still means that 70 per cent of the market will be people who want to go in the store and have that experience.” Goldsmith, a boundlessly enthusiastic man with a shock of silver hair, explains. “Particularly in our industry where people want guitars and things like that, or with PAs where people want hear stuff, that experience of feeling it, touching it, listening to it is what it’s still all about.” To that end, Goldsmith and his team have turned the cavernous store into a kind of experiential musicians’ playground. Recognising that the hands-on experience is what differentiates online purchasing from the physical act of shopping, each area of the store is staffed by experts who are keen to help the prospective customer grapple with their chosen instrument, regardless of that customer’s level of skill. The keyboard section is a perfect example. “The contemporary keyboard market’s quite reasonable,” Goldsmith tells us. “And we’re expanding that into more of a family home thing - you don’t buy pianos on the internet. It’s still an area where people need advice from sales guys and they want to hear it, they want their kids to sit and be comfortable with it. We’ve gone to the trouble of setting up a marble stage there, so when you sit down at the piano, you kind of feel like you’re in your New York apartment. People buy pianos here to go in their home almost as an ornament - it’s a decoration.” Of course, the guitar is still the most popular instrument around, so it’s unsurprising that, on entering the place for the first time, you’re
4 38
confronted by rack upon rack of gleaming, polished electric axes. Off to the right, on a raised platform, sits the bass area; to the rear, in their own little nook, nestle the impressive range of acoustic guitars. Overlooking the floor is the guitar customisation and repair bay, of which Goldsmith is justifiably proud. “There’s a lot of spare parts up there,” he says. “So you can come in and, if you can’t afford three or four thousand bucks for a high-end guitar, you can buy a low end guitar and buy some pickups and various upmarket bits and pieces for that guitar and gradually build it up into something really worthwhile. We can repair the guitar or adjust the guitar to your personal requirements.” Next door, however, is something really special - a part of Perth music history that many thought gone forever, thanks to combination of a shrinking market and poor management. Kosmic has bought The Drum Shop name, and it’s under that banner that they now sell perhaps the most impressive percussion range in Perth. “We acquired the Drum Shop brand and all the staff who used to work at The Drum Shop, the staff, the customers - everyone’s really excited about not losing that brand, because it was such an institution over the years and we were very sad when it all fell over. This will ultimately be the best drum shop in Australia.” Goldsmith, himself a drummer, sounds utterly confident in his prediction - and perhaps he should be. Rather than panic at the current market situation, he and Kosmic have attacked the future with boldness and vision, and in doing have ensured that their place as one of the premiere music outlets in Western Australia is assured for the forseeable future. _ TRAVIS JOHNSON

EQUIPMENT ROUND UP
It can be hard to keep track of the newest and neatest gear that comes onto the market, but luckily CHRIS GIBBS is at hand to act as our sherpa up the mountainside of musical innovation.
LUCAS NANO 300 PORTABLE PA SYSTEM
In a market where increasing opportunities are presenting themselves for artists capable of scaling down the physical space required for performances, HK have developed a new product in the LUCAS series with the goal of making a PA much smaller and efficient than its predecessors. No larger than a milk crate, the Lucas Nano 300 weighs just 10 kilograms, making transport and load-in a non-issue. In its basic form, that’s the whole set-up: the two satellite speakers (which weigh only 1 kilogram each) attach to the main housing (which comprises the subwoofer as well as the mixing desk) and you just plug in and play. The mixing desk built into the subwoofer features three channels. The only downside here is that the third channel has RCA inputs, having been designed more for CD/mp3 player input and is thus a little harder to integrate into a regular show requiring more channels for live instruments, unless some creative work is done with some relatively unorthodox leads and adapters. The Nano 300 manual suggests attaching a mixing desk to one of the other channels to sort this (or even buying and connecting a second Nano 300 unit); however this seems to defeats the purpose of acquiring such a small and compact system in the first place. It seems that a couple more input connection options on each channel might have been a good way to remedy this issue. The system delivers 230 watts, plenty for small acoustic performances or recorded background music shows, with the audio quality musicians have come to expect from HK products. There are optional accessory packs which can be purchased to enhance the Nano 300. The most vital is the speaker stand set consisting of two mounting poles, a tripod and two speaker cables in a travel bag which retails for $229. There is also a roller bag which houses the Nano 300 providing an even more efficient load-in and transport option for $199. The HK Lucas Nano 300 retails for $1249. satisfy even the most saturated-seeking players. Sure the Eddie sounds are there, but the overall sound is not really locked to any particular style, provided that the style in question requires plenty of dirt and power. The amp is driven by 6L6 and 12AX7 valves. The accompanying 2x12 cabinet is load with two Celestion 30-watt anniversary speakers, providing excellent dynamics, width and projection. Other features on the rear of the amp include selectable impedance (4, 8 or 16 ohms), dual parallel speaker outputs, an effects loop (which can be switched in and out via the included fourchannel footswitch), a headphone jack and a line out. There are even MIDI connections for use with MIDI footswitching for guitarists with more complicated rigs. Not surprisingly similar to the original Peavey 5150 series - although looking decidedly cooler particular in the ivory colour option - this amp does one thing really well: uber-gain. Players who are after that will love it; players looking for more balanced and versatile tones will plug in elsewhere. The Fender EVH 5150 III 50 watt head retails for $1499. The 2x12 cabinet retails for$799. Also available in this series is a 100-watt head, 4x12 cabinet, 1x12 cabinet and a combo model.
Van Halen exploded back into the industry last year with the release of A Different Kind Of Truth, featuring original frontman David Lee Roth whom the Van Halen brothers reunited with a few years prior for a couple of tours. Eddie Van Halen, an innovator in rock guitar, has always had a slew of signature products available, often switching between brands. One of the guitarist’s latest pairings is with Fender, who has taken on the task of creating a new line of signature amps and speakers. The EVH 5150 III 50 watt head is presented as a three-channel amp, but channels one and two share EQ, gain and volume, making it very difficult to set up two switchable, usable sounds. For example, dialling in a clean sound on channel one produces a brash, overly loud partially overdriven sound on channel two. Conversely, dialling in a great rhythm sound on channel two results in an ugly semi-clean channel one tone. So really what we have here is a two channel amp with an unnecessary gain boost on the clean channel. Luckily, channel three is what sells this amp: a gain-ridden monster of a channel with ridiculous amounts of drive and volume which will Reviewed at Mega Music Wangara.
DOING IT BY THE BOOK
Too-often overlooked in our online-obsessed world, instructional books and DVDs are and always have been an extremely reliable and beneficial method of taking on new musical concepts. Let’s take a look at some popular publications. CHRIS GIBBS reports. For the beginning or intermediate guitarist, it turns out that the tried and true publications are still top of their game in terms of quality information and learning systems. The ever-popular Aaron Shearer’s Classical Guitar Technique has recently received an upgrade and is now available with an accompanying enhanced CD. For contemporary players, the Progressive series of instructional books continues to sell well, with most editions now including enhanced CDs, DVDs, or both. The Progressive series covers all styles of guitar from first chords for young beginners right through to metal finger-benders for more developed players. Also available in the Progressive series are books for drums, bass, keyboards, vocals, harmonica and more. The aforementioned titles are available from all good music stores starting from as little as $15.95. The Guitar Handbook by Ralph Denyer is one of the most concise reference books for guitarists. Suitable for players of all levels, the book covers the history of guitar through profiles on some of the greats, instructional sections from beginner’s chords right through to modal improvisation, a step-by-step guide to guitar maintenance and repair, recording techniques and alternate tuning information. Of particular use is the excellent chord dictionary at the rear of the book which covers a minimum of three voicings for all of the major, minor and dominant extended chord families in all twelve keys. The Guitar Handbook retails for around $29.95. Popular with metal guitarists since the ‘80s, the Guitar Grimoire series of books provides an excellent reference tool for intermediate to advanced players. Penned by Adam Kadmon and originally covering seemingly endless fretboard positions for both diatonic and synthetic scales, the series has now grown to include chord, improvisation and finger exercise versions. Full ordering information is available at guitargrimoire. com Originally from the UK and now settled in Perth, seasoned drummer Jon Trotter has recently released Practical Grooves for the Working Drummer. Featuring a 278 page book, an audio CD containing

SOUND ADVICE Any veteran punter has been to up to the standards of touring bands in Australia.” It was while studying sound at the Academy countless gigs at Amplifier/Capitol, of Performing Arts that Stuart was asked to take over but have you ever considered who’s in-house duties at Amplifier and he’s been there ever since, working with countless bands and performers. responsible for making the guys on We asked him what he, as an engineer, liked to get stage sound so great? That’d be in- from any given band who sets foot on his stage. hope that bands come in and they house sound engineer Ian Stuart, and understand“I what it is that they have to do,” he tells we caught up with him to find out how us. “In that they can play their own songs properly, got good guitar sound, their drums are tuned the live scene looks from behind the they’ve - those kind of things. That’s what really makes a mixing desk. TRAVIS JOHNSON reports. difference to me; a band that comes in with all their Though he’s been at it for a remarkably long time, Ian Stuart never originally wanted to be a sound engineer; like so many, he first started on stage rather than behind the desk. “I grew up in Melbourne and played keyboard and guitar in a few bands in the late ‘80s,” he explains. “I played in cover bands. Then I moved to Perth. I liked going to see bands, but I noticed that there wasn’t a lot of really good sound going on in Perth, you know? I just wanted to go see bands and here them sound good and get a good mix. I found that it was so hard to find any quality sound that I thought I might as well have a go at it myself.” That decision led him, after a couple of years as a roadie, to a steady gig on the mixing desk at The Swanbourne Hotel mixing local bands.“Then they started doing quite a few touring bands - things like Cosmic Psycho and Frenzal Rhomb, Skunkhour, stuff like that. It started getting really technical as the acts got bigger and the PA got bigger, so I decided maybe I should get a little technical training, just to bring me
own shit together, knowing what they have to do.” He does admit to having had the occasional clash with touring bands who “...kind of have a ‘this is what we do, this is how loud we play’ attitude, and they do the same thing at every gig. You can’t always do that; you need to play at an appropriate level for the size of the venue you’re in, the size of the stage you’re on, and the equipment you’re using. Some bands do come in and try to dictate to me, and that’s where I draw the line. I don’t allow people to dictate to me what they think they want. I give them what I think is appropriate.” And perhaps that’s why, when we ask him what he likes best about the job, he says, “I really love watching local bands blow away touring bands. It’s just the best, and Perth has so many great bands. One of my favourite things is to have a touring band do their sound check, and then the support band comes on with half the amount of equipment, half the amount of time and half the experience and yet, quite often, they sound twice as good. That’s always pretty gratifying to me.” 37 X-Press – First on the street, Wednesdays

BANDS FROM THE BUSH
The Triple J Unearthed National Indigenous Music Awards competition is on again! For the second time, the radio station known for finding the country’s best unsigned acts is on the search again for the new sound in Indigenous music. Since taking out the inaugural award in 2012, beguiling songstress Thelma Plum has inked a record deal with Footstomp Records, released a debut EP titled Rosie, scored a performance slots at this year’s Byron Bluesfest and is now on a national tour supporting Emma Louise, so there’s no doubting this is one serious potential career starter. Unsigned indigenous acts can upload their tracks for judging via triplejunearthed.com. The winning band will be announced on July 11.
Fancy using your music to change someone’s life for the better? What if we told you there was potentially $50,000 in it for you too? In a nutshell, that’s what the Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition is all about. This u n i q u e c h a r i t y f u n d ra i s i n g songwriting competition is the largest of its kind in the world. It supports songwriters with fantastic prizes and uses the power of music to help people with developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Rett Syndrome and Angelman Syndrome and disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Dyspraxia and Spina Bifida. All you have to do is submit your song and a $50 entry fee (all of which goes to charity). This year’s judging panel includes Adalita, Kevin Mitchell, Kav Temperley and many more, and with previous winners of the competition including Kimbra and Megan Washington you know you’re in good company. Entries close on June 21. Hit up vandayoungsongcomp.com for full entry deets.
DISCOVER NEW MUSIC
Looking for some new music recommendations? Spotify has added a new ‘Discover’ feature for its website-based music player, which users can click on to find the latest recommendations Spotify has to offer. The recommendations include new songs, albums and artists based on which artists users follow as well as what their friends are listening to. Spotify is also rolling out ‘Audio Preview’, which lets users click and hold on any of the songs they see on the Discover page to get a short preview of what they’ll hear if they play the entire track. The ‘Discover’ and ‘Audio Preview’ features are launching first on Spotify’s web player but will roll out to the mobile and desktop apps over time. Check it out at spotify.com.
USE THE NUFORCE
It’s all good and well to drop some serious cash on a pair of high quality over ear headphones if you’re going to use them in the studio exclusively. But what if you really want to make your dollar go further and use those same headphones with your smartphone? In the past, it couldn’t be done - even if you did manage to get your headphones to plug into your smartphone jack the quality reaching your ears wouldn’t be much better than the wimpy earbuds your phone came with. Thankfully, the solution is as simple as NuForce’s new Mobile Music Pump, a tiny amp that connects to the headphone output of your MP3 player, iPhone, etc. Finally you can start experiencing the higher level of performance your headphones were always capable of. Tune in nuforce.com.

Joe Satriani
As audience members took their seats, examining the contents of their Thump Music showbags (which contained guitar cleaning and polishing supplies as well as sample Riff Axelerator guitar training software) many noted the spacious, well-lit staging area and three massive video screens which would later be used to capture and highlight all of the world-renowned guitarist’s intricate playing. After a brief introduction which included giving away some amazing effects pedal prizes for answering a few Joe-related questions, Satriani took to the stage amid raucous applause and proceeded to locate a patch lead problem which was thought to have been solved during sound check. The calm manner in which the guitarist worked with the Thump Music sound crew to quickly resolve the issue served as the first lesson for the evening, with Satriani adding an amusing anecdote regarding a similar occurrence he experienced live on radio in recent history. With the ice well and truly broken, Satriani commenced the class, building the information around the concept of having only one hour to practice and how that hour would be divided up. Fans were treated to Joe playing faultless renditions of his most famous songs to backing tracks. This served to highlight the guitarist’s confidence and mastery of his instrument; one wrong note and no one is going to be blaming the iPod and, let’s face it, playing some of the world’s most famous instrumental guitar songs to a room full of guitarists would be daunting for any player. Satriani commented on this, stating that “If you want to know how that weird sound was made or how the fast lick is played, let’s face it, there’s thousands of kids on
YouTube who can teach you that and probably play it better than I can…” Indeed, much of the clinic steered away from what the guitarist calls ‘showbiz stuff’ (guitar tricks and special effects) and veered towards providing excellent information regarding the melodic and harmonic concepts on which his compositions are built. Satriani stayed on message as he weaved his magic throughout staggering renditions of Satch Boogie, Surfing With The Alien, Flying In A Blue Dream and more, the message being ‘melody is king’. Each song was dissected, revealing the musician’s unique approach including his pitch axis technique (borrowing chords from multiple keys while holding down a constant anchoring tone) and Sinatrainfluenced melodic phrasing. A veteran of guitar teaching (whose more famous past students include Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett), this was surprisingly Satriani’s first ever master class tour and it was obvious from the outset that the guitarist possesses the unique ability to deliver solid musical concepts in a practical and palatable framework. The clinic ended in a brief on-stage jam with five local guitarists and a sense of community not often displayed amongst guitarists came to the fore, the audience getting behind each player and clapping along with each jam. Satriani then moved across to the meet and greet area immediately to sign materials and take photos, reportedly staying much longer than officially contracted to try and make sure everyone left happy. From start to finish, a class act, represented impeccably by a Western Australian music company. _ CHRIS GIBBS

RECORD STORE DAY One For The Record Books
On Saturday, April 20, 2013, Record Store Day turns five. It was way back in the heady days of 2007 that the idea was first mooted: one day to celebrate the - let’s face it, sometimes quite tenuous - existence of independent music retailers with an explosion of live performances, special releases, DJ sets, fun, frivolity and, above all else, music. It was Metallica themselves, long time combatants against digital piracy, who kicked off the first Record Store Day at San Francisco’s Rasputin Music on April 19, 2008, and the day is now marked on the third Saturday of every month. It hit a nerve. Even with the rise of digital distribution and online streaming services, there’s something about the experience of hunting for music in an actual shop, and Record Store Day is now a global institution. With that in mind, we touched base with some of the best and brightest purveyors of music in Perth to find out what they had planned.
UNKNOWN TREASURES Where are you? Coventry Village. 243-253 Walter Road Morley (opposite Centro Galleria). How long have you been in the game? Just 16 months so far but growing rapidly! Unknown Treasures opened it’s doors late 2011, when I was just 21 years old! What’s your specialty or genre focus? We personally love a lot of indie and alternative music, and this shines through. But the store caters for all genres. We have something for everyone, from metal to jazz and everything in between. The new vinyl section holds a great selection of both classic albums and new releases, and our second hand section is filled to the brim. Both new and used vinyl sections continue to grow. We are always on the hunt for more. It’s exciting! We also listen to our customers, and if they ask to see something in our store we do our best to do so, and also take orders if they do not find what they are after on the shelf. How strong is the music retail industry now? When we first opened our doors we had CD racks lining the store, and over time they have been replaced more and more by vinyl racks. It is definitely vinyl that keeps this store going. CD sales have dropped considerably. So we hope the vinyl resurgence continues! Judging by the crowds at our record fairs we are sure that it will.
Unknown Treasures want to become something of the past. We love chatting to people and recommending things, and it’s amazing the relationships you build with your regular customers. Getting to know what people like and being able to cater for that. You get none of these things online.
What have you got planned for Record Store Day? We are really looking forward to our second Record What makes a good record store better than Store Day! Unknown Treasures will have 10 per cent online shopping? off all records (new and second hand). We will have There is nothing quite like a record store, which is some cool Record Store Day limited releases in store why I wanted to open my own. The thrill of sifting for the day and have a DJ playing vinyl all day. Also through the racks and not knowing what you might anyone who makes a purchase on RSD goes into a find is all part of the joy for a music lover. Being able raffle to win one of three gift vouchers. Not forgetting to touch the records, read the sleeves properly, hear to mention cupcakes and goodies and laughs! so music playing in store, and not knowing where to come down and visit us and support your local indie look next is a wonderful experience that I do not record store!
SAFARI’S RECORD SHACK Where are you? Rear of Shop 3, Arcade 189, 189 William Street, Northbridge. How long have you been in the game? About two months (still a newbie!). What’s your specialty or genre focus? Predominantly second hand and specializing in blues, funk, soul, jazz, reggae and tropical. How strong is the music retail industry now? Strong enough for fresh stores such as myself to be able to emerge. I think the vinyl buying market is very strong and very healthy right now. It would appear that the punters’ appetite for the tangible, physical experience that is vinyl is on the up and up. What makes a good record store better than online shopping? Primarily, I think it’s the experience of physically digging in the crates and the thrill of the search itself. It’s always much more satisfying to personally and physically find that one elusive record you’ve been hunting down for years. 10 36
Safari’s Record Shack What have you got planned for Record Store Day? Heaps of quality stock on sale for the day - specials galore! DJs in Arcade 189 all day. Additional record sellers out front of the Shack, bulk fresh stock, good times all around. X-Press – First on the street, Wednesdays

Noise Pollution Records
NOISE POLLUTION RECORDS Where are you? 280 William Street, Northbridge. How long have you been in the game? 15 years. What’s your specialty or genre focus? Rock, alternative, psych, punk, DJ breaks, beats and samples.
What makes a good record store better than online shopping? Service, knowledge and postage costs. (I had to add that as people tell me they buy records very cheap online but never include postage in the conversation.) With second hand I hear a lot people being burnt buying on the net as anyone can buy and sell vinyl but are clueless when it comes to gradings and pressings. Grading the records to a collector is very important and sometimes the record’s condition is not what they expected when it arrives in the mail. In a retail store you can physically look at the record and decide for yourself before buying, and if the record is faulty or buckled or not what you expected you can return it to some stores. But online it will cost at least seven dollars in Australia to post it back, and then there’s no guarantee of getting your money back either, so buy local
How strong is the music retail industry now? Mediocre. I think it has levelled off , not booming as much as people say. Because there are so many people doing it as a cash business on the side on weekends at markets, swap meets, vintage fairs I don’t think retail is experiencing much sales growth What have you got planned for Record Store Day? at all as costs seem to be increasing and prices falling. 10 per cent off all new vinyl, free beers.
78 RECORDS Where are you? Upper Level, 255 Murray Street Mall, Perth. How long have you been in the game? 42 years. What’s your specialty or genre focus: Vinyl, turntables and accessories, CDs, merchandise, tickets, imports, indie/alternative, jazz, blues, punk, metal, electronic. How strong is the music retail industry now? Music retail is strong, however it’s absolutely nothing like it was 10 years ago, but it was at a peak back then, internet trade didn’t exist. If we weren’t to compare to bygone days and just analyse how many people come into my record shop every day, every week or every month and pick up a healthy bunch of LPs or CDs I’d happily say music retail is doing ok.
78 Records really glad Record Store Day exists, it’s quite simply a reminder that whilst the digital age is upon us, it’s not the be all and end all of retail consumerism.

You’ve heard of iTunes, Spotify and (lest we forget) Myspace, but did you know there are a bunch of other music streaming services available in Australia? While there are definitely a few bad apples in the bunch (read: overly expensive, extremely limited choice of tunes), there are also some great alternatives to the big guys when it comes to listening to music on the internet (legally, that is). Here’s three of our top picks...
Pandora’s iPhone app
PANDORA
Point of difference: While it’s not all that well known here in Australia, Pandora has grown to be one of the US’ most popular streaming services - it currently has 75 million users and claims to be growing at three million more per month. So what’s the big fuss? Well, basically it’s easiest to sum up Pandora as an ‘internet radio service’. In a nutshell, the service creates personalised ‘radio stations’ based on an artist or song that you like. Once you have indicated a ‘seed’ song or artist, Pandora gathers songs with similar qualities to play (similar to iTune’s ‘genius’ function). For example, entering ‘KISS’ sees a playlist created which includes KISS themselves along with AC/DC, Van Halen and Bon Jovi. A more obscure band like Little Birdy sees Little Birdy themselves appear along with the likes of Paul Kelly and Neill Finn. There are also some preprogrammed ‘stations’ which have ubiquitous names like ‘Today’s Hits’ and ‘Classic Rock’ but guarantee hassle free easy listening. REHEARSAL STUDIOS Price: US$3.99 for a one month subscription or US$36 for a one-year subscription (which also handily AAA VHS REHEARSAL ROOMS Great facilities, blocks all those annoying ads). great vibe & great price!!! Unit 5 /16 Peel Road, Perfect for: Honing your disc jockey skills, putting together fuss free party playlists, discovering new tunes that sound a lot like your much-loved old tunes. O’Connor. I STREAM, YOU STREAM, WE ALL STREAM…
GROOVESHARK
Point of difference: Grooveshark is a webbased streaming service that runs in a browser and pumps out visual, rather than audio, ads to support itself. The website is pretty simple - you register, build playlists and start streaming. Also, if you’re a budding muso looking to get your music head by a global audience, you can upload your music to Grooveshark and watch the plays rack up. However, the main benefit of creating a Grooveshark account is the ability to save your favorite songs. Grooveshark will remember every song you add to your playlists. All of your music will be available any time you are at a computer with an internet connection or, if you’re a ‘Grooveshark Anywhere’ subscriber (you’ll pay US$90 per year for the privilege), your music can go anywhere your phone goes. Price: It’s 100 per cent free! However, it’s currently being accused of copyright violation by some of music industry heavyweights, so use it now while you still can. Perfect for: Promoting your own tunes, building an epic music collection.
DEEZER
Point of difference: No annoying sign up forms! Deezer is a social-media based streaming service, which means you can sign in with your Facebook account and get listening in a matter of minutes. While the service definitely has it’s pros (e.g. you can also find out what your friends are listening to in real-time), there are also some very real cons (e.g. the app may post Facebook updates about songs you’ve recently listened to on your behalf, which can prove rather embarrassing when you’ve just indulged in a Hanson/Spice Girls/Backstreet Boys listening marathon). Price: Free, unlimited music streaming for the first 12 months. After that time you’re restricted to two hours of streaming per month, or you can jump onto the $6.99 tier which gets rid of ads and enables radio services, or you can get onto the Premium+ tier ($11.99 a month) which allows streaming over 3G/4G networks and offline syncing. Perfect for: Facebook stalking background music, sharing your top-notch musical tastes with your social media networks. _ JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD

JOE SATRIANI A Class of His Own
One of the most famous and accomplished guitarists on the planet, Joe Satriani is bringing his Master Class Clinic tour to Australia for the first time in April. Joe took some time out from his preparations to let the Volume crew know what he is going to deliver to audiences during this unique tour.
This will be your first clinic tour in Australia. What Versatility and adaptability are key attributes can ticket holders expect to see and hear at these for the successful musician. of Custom Shop, Signature and Pawn Shop guitars for 2013 as well as the use of footswitches and the interface of several new Fender amps made the show almost not feel like advertising. And even though it did aim to get the audience interested in buying Fender gear, the entertainment offered made us wish that all advertising expos could be this much fun.
Three other very talented musicians back Koch. James Ryan, the band’s second guitarist, handles much of the technical information about the products being demonstrated. Amongst many other projects, Ryan has worked on Vanessa Amorosi’s albums and played with the house band on TV show The X-Factor though don’t let that put you off. Ryan’s guitar playing is as precise as a professional hitman, and is an excellent juxtaposition to the raw animal playing of Koch.
Greg Koch The Fender Road Show is a week-long tour of most of the country’s capital cities. The Road Show’s final performance was held downstairs in Perth’s State Theatre building on Thursday, March 7. Each night of the tour Fenderophile Greg Koch and his band have been informing, advertising and facemelting prospective Fender buyers with some very entertaining demonstrations of what Fender guitars and amps can do. A native of Milwaukee (or ‘the good land’ as Alice Cooper calls it) The Fender Road Show’s ringmaster and lead guitarist, Greg Koch, takes the audience of musicians, music store owners, Fender reps and lovers of lead-breaks through a musical schooling that is over two hours long. Throughout the show his self-professed ‘Sasquatchian’ hands shred their way through about 40 of Fender’s finest guitars from their new 2013 range. Koch first started working with the Road Show in ‘94 after Fender representatives visited one of the Hal Leonard Guitar Clinics that he was teaching in Nashville, and he hasn’t looked back. www.xpressmag.com.au
After a creative rendition of tunes by Pink Floyd and Rage Against The Machine, the band wound up the evening with an intricate array of original guitar driven tunes and jams which left the audience needing a cold shower after the geargasms many of them had just experienced. Those of us who could still stand reattached our melted faces and were invited to go up to the stage and handle many of the guitars used throughout the Road Show. This was a nice touch, as the best way to really know if a guitar is right for you is to The insanely talented, axe shredding energy pick the thing up and play it. Ryan and Koch evoke ties together well with the band’s rhythm section, made up of drummer Haydyn Meggit Koch and the members of the band stuck and bassist Marcel Xammouni. Although the night is around for a short while after the show to answer all about guitars, Meggit lays down some very intricate questions and discuss guitars. As the house lights raised drum-solos and funky beats which add to the pristinely and the audience continued to interact with both the tight band. Xammouni on bass shows with a scary level guitars and each other an interesting community vibe of funkiness just what Fender’s new bass range can do developed. Information and anecdotes about favourite as well as seamlessly demonstrating the sonic power of guitars were shared, and it seemed everybody left the the new Bassman range of Fender Bass amps. show with thoughts of the axe that they just had to buy, and the Wayne’s World-like image of playing their new This year’s instalment of the Road Show toy whilst thinking ‘It shall be mine… Oh yes. It shall be opened with a video screen montage of vintage Fender mine. Schhawing!’ guitars that had the guitar nerds in the audience both salivating and reminiscing, depending on whether or not they had actually been born at the time many of these guitars were released. Judging by the greying _NATHAN CHRISTIANSEN ponytails or lack of hair altogether, most of the guitar aficionados were very familiar with the classic guitars presented, and were already captivated. The audience was then taken on a sonic trip down memory lane led by Koch’s ‘60s and ‘70s inspired lead guitar demonstrations and the tight backing of the Road Show’s band. Several impressive guitar jams written by Koch were played using the updated 2013 versions of many of these classic vintage axes, such as ‘60s Telecasters and the iconic ‘70s Stratocasters. The members of the band then engaged in an informal and hilarious discussion as they explained the subtle changes and almost disturbing attention to detail that Fender had put into the rereleased versions of the guitars for 2013. Although laden with facts and hardcore guitar terminology, the discussion of the guitars and amps flowed well and the minutia of the details were not lost on those members of the audience who were not already familiar with Fender products or guitar lingo in general. The stage presence of Koch at this point was a mixture of stand-up comedian and old school guitar god.The group’s ability to explain with humour in depth factors such as tone and style of the upcoming range

Featuring a light basswood body, a rosewood fretboard with Skull & Bones inlays, and rock-ready EMG LH301 humbucker pickups, you can be shredding your way through the Black Album for less than $600. CX ROADSHOW ROUND-UP
When CX, Australia’s monthly sound, lights, video and staging technology news magazine brought their CX Roadshow to The Hyatt in Perth on Valentine’s Day, the Volume crew cancelled date night and got in on the action, risking the wrath of significant others for the greater musical good. Here are just some of the new products from the show that captured our hearts, minds and ears: The Amber Technology stand had a number of microphone brands on display. Robust and eyecatching, the Blue en.CORE series of microphones will be sure to win over the fashion conscious vocalist as well as singers chasing a higher standard of vocal microphone. The en.CORE 100 dynamic mic is a standard live vocal mic, while the 200 features an active circuit to cope with loss of signal from longer cables. The 300 is a condenser mic designed with powerful vocalists in mind and the 100i is an instrument microphone. These microphones look the part and just holding on to one and taking in the sheer weight and sleek design is a confidence-builder. Current Blue endorsees include Okkervil River, Hot Hot Heat, Danko Jones and The Gaslight Anthem amongst many others. Find out more at bluemic.com or visit ambertech.com.au for Australian supplier information. DPA Microphones have recently introduced their new d:fine single-ear headset microphone series. Light, non-intrusive and even inconspicuous if required (some colour choices are skin-toned), the d:fine series also offers directional and omni modes, single and dual ear designs and long and short mic booms. These mics perform equally well on both cable and pro wireless systems. See and hear more at dpamicrophones. com or visit the Australian supplier at ambertech. com.au to find out more. The KV2 Audio stand featured the JK Series DI Units. Sporting low-noise, high quality circuitry, European transformers and military standard sealed switches, these DI units offer higher headroom and lower output impedance than any other DI currently available. They look and feel like they mean

business and several options are available. In addition to the standard single channel DI, there are stereo, acoustic and passive models available as well as a tone generator for tuning and checking large PA systems. Check out kv2audio.com.au for more details. The Australis Music Group stand was sporting some amazing new technology from Line 6, one of the group’s recent brand acquisitions. The Volume team were blown away by the technology on display from the new Line 6 StageScape M20d, the world’s first smart mixing system. The system utilises touchscreen-based visual mixing, input jack sensing, a visual mixing environment and professionally crafted sound tools to prepare, process and route signals automatically. Rather than knobs and faders, StageScape M20d uses a touchscreen with a graphic representation of your stage and touching an image gains access to control of that channel. Dialling in sounds and tones is as simple as moving your finger around the screen. Coupled with the StageSource intelligent speaker systems which are available in numerous combinations, this technology is the ultimate pairing of audio quality, intuitive user-friendly design and, well…amazing sci-fi features! An available iPad app also allows the user to mix from anywhere in the room, and an on-board SD card slot makes live recording a simple as the touch of a screen! The StageScape 36 18

SLAM DAY
VOLUME NEWS
Saturday, February 23, is the second National SLAM day, an Australia-wide celebration of live music, with gigs of every stripe taking place from coast to coast. Head to slamrally.org for more information. Your favourite protest singer aside, the link between music and politics is often obscure. To be sure, popular music has a long and proud tradition of commenting on and criticising the issues of the day, but the flow goes both ways. It’s always worth remembering that all your favourite venues, festivals, pubs, clubs, and open-mic bars and cafes basically exist at the tolerance of a number of large and not necessarily sympathetic bureaucratic bodies, and sometimes that tolerance grows mighty thin. Such was the case back in 2010, when the State Government of Victoria decided to take a dim view of the social benefits of live music. SLAM founder Helen Marcou explains.“The then-government had linked live music with high risk activity in a bid to curb alcohol-fuelled violence. There was a roll-out of liquor licenses that said that if you hosted any live music at all, you immediately became a high risk venue, which meant two security guards, CCTV, increased insurance costs... and what we found in a very short period of time is that 130 venues actually reduced their live music programme or cancelled it altogether.” It sounds like an extreme measure by a reactionary parliament, but it’s really just a logical extension of the noise complaints and loud moaning that have cost us in the west a good number of venues - anyone who can remember the glory of the Grosvenor Back Room should count themselves lucky. We’re also lucky that the music community of Victoria decided not to take such a legislative lashing lying down, responding with a veritable barrage of protest in the form of the SLAM - Support Live Australian Music, in case you’re wondering - Rally. “20,000 people marched on Parliament House,” Marcou recalls. “Demanding that this policy be overturned, and to break the link between live

Helen Marcou music and violence. We had strong, evidence-based research that showed that, if anything, live music actually mitigates violence rather than creates it. We came out with a bang, and it was called the larger cultural rally in Australia’s history. I don’t think it’s happened anywhere in the world, to have that many people congregate in defence of live music.” As a direct result of that grassroots groundswell, the Victorian Liquor Licensing Act was changed a little over a year later, rescinding the restrictive new rules. Since then, SLAM has gone on to become a powerful behind the scenes advocate for the live music sector. Marcou rattles off an impressive list of accomplishments and current goals. “We’re at the negotiating table with the Victorian Premier, planning changes; we’re working with the South Australian government, who are now introducing their Small Venues Bill, discussing ways of helping Adelaide get more live music stimulated into the scene. Some of our closest allies and advisors make up the bulk of the Sydney Live Music Task Force that has just been announced, and they’ll be making recommendations. SLAM also lobbied for
three years for the creation of a Federal position of National Live Music Coordinator, and Dr. Ianto Ware from South Australia was appointed earlier this year. He’ll be developing a list of recommendations for Simon Crean’s office on a Federal level. So there’s stuff happening all over the country - it’s a really exciting time, when live music is firmly on the political agenda.” There are also many things afoot locally, not the least of which is the number of SLAM Day gigs going down this weekend, including Emperors at The Amplifier, Tomas Ford at the Bok Choy Ballroom, and The Aunts at The Swan Basement. SLAM is a grassroots organisation, eschewing government funding and corporate sponsorship. “At times we need to be hyper-critical of government,” Marcou explains. “So it’s important that we’re not beholden to them.” When asked the simplest way local punters can fly the flag, she is straight to the point. “Get out to a gig on February 23,” she says. “No matter what else you’re doing, get out to a live gig and wish everyone a happy SLAM day.” _TRAVIS JOHNSON

Designed to compete in the same market niche as Shure and Westone, they’re expected to retail between $250 - $300. Head to audiofly.com for details.

The NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show held annually every January in Anaheim, California, is one of the world’s largest music product trade shows. Here are some new product highlights from NAMM 2013: The Godin Guitar Company’s beginnings in 1972 included president and founder Robert Godin travelling the United States and Canada, selling guitars to dealers out of his van and building replacement necks for some of the industry’s top brands of the time. Today, Godin is one of the largest guitar manufacturers in the business and now includes six factories and seven guitar brands sold worldwide. The Godin brand in itself features the widest range of guitars and stringed instruments in the industry, which ingratiates the brand across most playing styles. This year Godin celebrated 40 years in the business by unveiling several new models at NAMM, one of which was the Godin Montreal Premiere electric guitar. This semi-hollow body electric guitar features a Canadian wild cherry top, back and sides, with an innovative spruce carved core which promotes free air flow through the interior, making the instrument resonant and vibrant. A three-way toggle switch, volume and tone knobs, mahogany set-neck with rosewood fingerboard, double-bound binding, high-gloss custom polished finish, contoured high-gloss headstock with high-ratio vintage style tuners, and ResoMax bridge system by Graphtech with stop tailpiece round out the features. For more information, head over to facebook.com/Dethtone When it comes to instruments, there’s always a tension between quality and affordability. Let’s face it, generally speaking, your average jobbing muso doesn’t have a whole lot of cash to flash around, and so bang for your buck is an important consideration. Enter Dethtone Guitars. The Dethtone brand began as a set of guitar strings, but since 2009 their most visible product has been their range of guitars and basses. Specifically designed for those toiling at the heavier end of the rock and roll spectrum, Dethtone guitars are just the thing for the headbanger on a budget. With guitar and amplifier packages starting at $299, and bass packages beginning at $499, selecting a Dethtone axe means not compromising on quality without breaking the bank. This year, Dethtone have taken their Godin Montreal Premiere rock ethos to the next level by recruiting respected

MUSIC GEAR & TECHNOLOGY EDITED BY TRAVIS JOHNSON
VOLUME FOR BEGINNERS
Whether you’re strictly a listener or seasoned pro, there’s a whole genre of fascinating musical books waiting to be tuned into. This week Volume takes a look at four of the best tomes for fresh-faced beginners.
HOW SOON IS NOW? By Richard King (Allen & Unwin)
If you’re more interested in the ins-and-outs of the music biz than chord progressions, sheet music and instrumentation, Richard King’s memoir provides an insider’s glimpse of “the madmen and mavericks who made independent music” from the ‘70s right through to the early noughties. King himself was a quintessential figure on the indie scene through the period — he founded Bristol’s Planet Records (which was part of Rough Trade’s distribution network) and now works in A&R for Domino — and his recollections of some very famous musical icons (including The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Sonic Youth, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub and Cocteau Twins) make for an incredibly engaging read.
HOW MUSIC WORKS By David Byrne (Allen & Unwin)
In How Music Works, former Talking Heads frontman Byrne eschews an autobiographical account of his own experiences of music-making over the past four decades in favour of a more general discussion of music. In discussing music’s connection to human origins, its history, its evolution, its strengths and its weaknesses, Byrne explains how music is shaped by external factors, whether it be location, technology, economics or mere happenstance. It’s not all theory and conjecture, however, with the aptly titled “My Life In Performance” section offering some insight into the thought processes behind his various sartorial choices over the years.
Guitar Zero
GUITAR ZERO
By Gary Marcus (Penguin)
MUSICOPHILIA: TALES OF MUSIC AND THE BRAIN
How Soon Is Now?
By Oliver Saks (Picador)
Fancy yourself a deep thinker? In his 2007 bestseller Musicophilia, famed physician Oliver Saks focuses on people afflicted with strange musical disorders (he refers to them as “musical misalignments”) that affect their professional and daily lives. There are stories which move — such as those of individuals afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease for whom music has restored their memories — and those which terrify — such as those of previously healthy people suddenly afflicted by musical hallucinations and uncontrollable epileptic-style fits. Saks’ collection of utterly readable true stories are moving and refreshing for music buff and newcomer alike.
How Music Works
For the past couple of decades the common school of thought in musical circles has been that the skills required to play an instrument (much like those skills required to learn a new language or understand algebraic equations) are best acquired in early childhood, when the brain is more malleable. New York University professor of cognitive psychology Gary Marcus aims to disprove this theory in Guitar Zero. Enticed to start learning to play guitar after putting in some solid hours playing Guitar Hero, the 40-something’s inspirational musical journey proves it’s never to late to try to become the next Hendrix.
SCHOOL OF ROCK
Whether you’re just starting on the long way to the top, or you’re an experienced gunslinger looking for a few tips and tricks, there’s an abundance of music teachers and schools around who can teach you a thing or two about a thing or two.
CLIFF LYNTON GUITAR INSTITUTE
With instructors who can boast over 30 years experience, the Cliff Lytin Guitar Institute is the number one destination for anyone wanting to give their axe-handling skills a polish. Their structured lesson plans place an emphasis on steady but quick progress, without neglecting the essential element of fun. When the school’s namesake has supported everyone from Tommy Emmanuele to Fleetwood Mac, you know you’re in safe, albeit callused, hands. Go to clifflynton.com to learn more.
MEGA MUSIC ACADEMY
Not just an equipment retailer, Mega Music also offers music lessons in a wide range o f d i s c i p l i n e s, i n c l u d i n g g u i t a r, d r u m s, harmonica, vocals, saxophone, and more. Bookings are generally by the school term, to accommodate the beginning student, but other arrangements are possible, including single lesson refresher courses. In conjunction with their retail arm, they also offer advice on instrument packages for beginning musicians. Head to megamusiconline.com.au
CASTLEROCK INSTITUTE OF MUSIC ROCKS AUSTRALIA MUSIC With their innovative Rockschool programme, Castlerock Institute of Music is the perfect place for the nascent muso to get from their first chord to their first gig in record time. With a curriculum tailored to the age, personality, and skill level of the individual student, Castlerock has an exemplary record, and bands from the school have supported such heavyweights as Karnivool, Birds of Tokyo, and British India. Check out castlerock.com.au for more information.
With testimonials from the likes of Aussie hard rock icon Angry Anderson, Music Rocks Australia has certainly drawn its share of appreciative industry notice. A passion project for founder Dean Blanchard, the school’s key aim is to make music fun and accessible to students of all ages and all backgrounds. With a focus on inspiration and building confidence, Music Rocks Australia has a place for everyone with an itch to learn music.

Still, the benefits of lessons are manifold. If Plenty of musicians take lessons, nothing else, professional voice coaching can teach a but singers tend to think that they vocalist to fully exploit the natural physical resources have. Using these you can exploit your natural range and expand singing teacher, tells us why that ain’t tools, on it. It’s designed to give you a friendly push and necessarily so. bring the best out of the voice you were born with, The voice is a unique musical element. It’s an instrument, just like any guitar or keyboard. But it’s also a physical function of the body, and as such it can be trained. It’s odd then, that so few singers, particularly when starting out, take the time to hone their voice outside of normal band rehearsal time. Will Stoker, who in addition to performing with his band, The Embers, is also a singing teacher, believes this is a mistake. “My job as a singing teacher,” he explains. “Is designed to be a gym for your voice to begin with - so you might say I’m a personal trainer - to guide the students into certain areas where they might want to progress and aspire to be, and why they want to do it. A good example I always say is you don’t pick up a dumbbell with your fingertips; you use your shoulders, your biceps, triceps, forearm muscles, your total skeletal system, your hand, and your wrist to pick up the dumbbell - it’s pretty much applying that to the singing.” He does caution, however, that raw talent still plays a part; no matter what your aspirations, no amount of lessons can turn a normal voice into an exceptional one. “I reinforce the idea that you won’t end up sounding like Mariah Carey or what have you, because you’re not Mariah Carey. It’s all about bringing out the best that you were born with, and knowing the extent of your abilities to begin with and exploring that and building on that.”
to create the same emotive feeling you get from the vocalists you admire.” His students run the gamut from children to the elderly, and though many are training with an eye on pop superstardom - “I have some students that want to audition for many of the talent shows X Factor and so on.” - he is adamant that any kind of singer can benefit from training. “There are people who create the same emotive response from an audience who wouldn’t fall into that stereotypical category,” he says.“Such as Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. It’s mainly about creating the same feeling that you get when you’re listening to your singing idols.” There’s an argument to be made that singing lessons run counter to rock’s DIY ethos, but Stoker believes it’s a false one.“I can understand why people would say that, because I come from the DIY ethos. I sing in a rock band, and I came up through the heavy metal and punk side of things, and that’s mainly why I’ve taken vocal therapy lessons with many different vocal instructors in the past. I actually have a lot of rock singers and heavy metal students, and I teach them certain techniques that empower your voice and let you scream your head off for a good hour on stage and then come off speaking normally. It’s everything I can pass on to other rock singers - it’s not frilly pop stuff. When you actually become more mindful and aware of your technique, and you become so much better for it.”

SOUND AND VISION
Ben Young
Sound is only part of the equation. Cartman’s Got No Reason was made for $80 - Young now commands a higher price. Every band knows that one of the “I can’t do anything for less than $5000,” most powerful marketing tools at he says of his budgets. “And they go all the way up to $30000. But the bigger the idea, the more money out of the REHEARSAL pie. “The best thing to do would be their disposal is the music video. you put into it, the better it’s going to be, and that’s STUDIOS to start at the smallest venue you can find and With that in mind, we talk to director just not a lie. “I’m gonna quote Sean Pollard from Split Seconds,” Ben Young says thoughtfully. “Who said to me that a music video is like a band’s business card. If someone hears a song or hears about a band, they jump online, they Google them, and they can see the business card of the band. The better quality that business card is, the better image that it presents of the band.” He ought to know; after all, Young is an acclaimed music video director with over 20 credits to his name, including clips for Nathan Gaunt, Emperors, Simone and Girlfunkle, and Boys! Boys! Boys! His video for The Voltaire Twins’ Animalia won an ATOM Award, and his skills are in high demand. In short, he knows of what he speaks. There’s a school of thought that maintains that anyone can make a music video these days; after all, pretty much every phone is a video camera, and every computer is a digital editing suite. Young disagrees. “If you and me were to go out and buy a whole pile of bricks and a whole pile of cement, could we build a house?,” he asks rhetorically. “No. The technology is at everyone’s fingertips, but it’s not just a matter of understanding the technology. It’s something that you need to learn. Just because you own a camera, and just because you own an edit suite, that doesn’t mean you are a filmmaker. It is a trade that you have to learn, regardless of whether you have the toys or not.” Of course, working with a professional director and crew is not free. While his early efforts were realised on tiny budgets - his first clip for
While the average jobbing band might balk at such an expense, he points out that the cost is not as difficult to bear as it first appears. “It’s not that expensive; most bands have a minimum of three people in them, so if they were to save up a thousand dollars each, maybe a little bit less, they could get something that looks really, really slick. I can’t encourage people enough to do that. I still get phone calls from bands who ask for a video for free, or ask for a video for an embarrassingly low amount of money, which I just can’t afford to do. I have to pay off gear, and I need to pay my crew. So start a Pozible account and raise money for the video, or just save up a little bit, and it will make such a difference. “Ideally,” he continues.“You want to make a video that people want to share, and hopefully they’ll want to share it for the song anyway. Every music video I make - and I don’t always succeed - my objective is to get people to forward on the video regardless of the song. So, if you’re lucky and you come up with a good enough idea, then hopefully the video can make the song get seen by a lot more people than would have otherwise. I think if it’s done well it can be really important, but if it’s bad, it can probably have a negative effect. If it looks amateur, it makes the band look cheap and look like nobodies, but if they’re a relatively new band and they have something, and it looks super slick, then it makes it look like they’ve got a record label behind them, it makes them look like they’re doing well, even if they’re not.”
