A big win on the road for the Seniorslastweek. Frazerwas named best afield hauling 11 (yes that’s right e-l-e-v-e-n) goals. Doubles to Clint, Jack, Fish and Worm. Singles to TunksandDredgie.

Also named in the best were Finn, Hamish, Tunks, Clint and Boxy Some very consistent performers in thereoverrecentweeks. The outfit should be tested today asweplayhosttoWest.

The Magoos was a low scoring affair, a slog to the end, but a win nonetheless. It’s great to see the juniors not only stepping up to make u p t h e n u m b e r s b u t

p e r f o r m i n g w e l l t o complement the experience of the stalwarts. Old heads, young legs. Dylan Sigston was named best ahead of Charlie, Brad, Smithers, GooseandClay.

Josh Peters snared 2 goals andsinglestoTizzandDylan.

We would like to encourage everyone back to the club tonight for the Goods and Services Auction. Whether it be a unique sporting event, an intimate getaway, boutique dining, quality animal protein or backyard blitz, there’s something for everyone.

Hi all, finally got a game at Malseed park without some consistentrain.

straps in the second half We welcome back a few faces and enjoyed the patches of sunshine to play some good passages of play

The day was a mixed bag for the Juniors coming up against a very well drilled south team The improvement in our 14s is evidentanddespitethescoreon Saturday it was great to see the improvement with the kids. The Kids are playing together as a teamanditsawesometoseethe joy of little wins they are a c h i e v i n g o n t h e f i e l d throughout the game. Wel done to Bradlei for winning the “duck medal” The 16s and 18s played very similar games came across a very strong south unit and played a great first halves but died out in the second The reserves hit the ground running and played a very competitive south team who made them work to the very end Gives Comma a bit of bragging rights withJakeforabitlonger. GoRoos!

A big thanks to Matty and Mardi Patzel for the day with the duck for organising all the wonderful sponsor for the day. It was great for the player sponsors to enjoy a beer with the Duck and some greatcountryfootballalso.

This weekend we take on the bench marks in netball, football and club and we make no secret as a club we strive to be as successful in all the areas similar toMillicent.

Now I have again learnt the ever painful way of shooting my mouth of about the pies and will be saying no more about them. Itsbeenalong2weekstosaythe least and I wish I could say I learnt from this lesson but I wont.

The seniors have missed dry football and it showed with beingalittlerustyinthefirsthalf to a fast South side but hit our

The ressies kicked one of their higherscoreswithnolessthan4 goal kickers. DJ Brooks was on the whistle and thanks to all those that have done the umpiring throughout the year It mightn’t feel like it some times out on the field, but your e f fo r t s a r e v e r y m u c h appreciated Tim & Zayne Young, Tyler Horrigan, Michael Blanck, Reece McLaughlin and Tyler Harris took out the awards.

VWhat a great night was had by all at the Bucking Bull show, a bit disturbing that so many wanted to pair up to ride but hey if thats what the young blokes of today are into more power too them. The Jones brothers have taken the mantle fromtheRhookBoysasthebestbull ridersintheclub,Joshuaridingthe8 seconds with a score of 86, just pipping his brother Casey and Claire Foster for top honours It was fantastic to see so many of our younger members having a crack and really enjoying themselves, Darren and Paige I think its time to buyJasmineaPony.

How good are the Under 16 Cats, they are really flying the flag for the clubatthemomentwitha2goalwin over the Saints, Coach Fidler has really got these young men working asacohesiveunitandareallsetnow for a good crack at the Finals. Better players in a top team effort were Coby Rice, Archie Lane, Jedd Rhook, JoshuaJones,HenryDorahyandBay McKinnon.

The Under 14's just keep on trying, they are helped to field a side each week by their opponents and are learning the best traits of team work Better players were Billy Rhook, Nate Longhurst, Jagger Geary, the unstoppable Kirby Vise (who was also in the best in the Under15Bsandboundary umpirein theSeniorFooty!)andJettLykke.

The Reserves looked like a Finals capeable team on Saturday with playersacrosstheParkputtingonan awesome display for the crowd, better players were Conan Deveraux, Kane Forbes, Rufaro Makore, Thomas Searle, Kaden HumphriesandFletcherBright.

The seniors played disciplined football, Coach Forbes will be reitterating that type of footy to his Cats again today, better players were Jarrod O'Brien, Hamish McCrae, Michael Krieger, Zac Nash, JustinCarlinandAdamMcKinnon. GREENASTARCOACHFORTIGERS

Carltonpremiershipplayerimpresses

NORTH Gambier found a super star when they appointed Carlton premiership star Richie Green to be captain-coach in 1957 in the South EastandBorderFootballLeague.

Greenhadbeenabrilliantballwinnerindefence for Carlton after debuting at 20 years of age in 1946.Heplayed95leaguegameswiththeBlues until 1952 when he switched to South Melbourne and played two games He was among Carlton’s best players in their 1947 VFL premiership win and again among their best again in 1949 when Carlton lost to Essendon in thegrandfinal.

After his VFL career he went coaching in the country and took charge of Camperdown from 1953beforefindinghiswaytoNorthGambierin 1957.Asamatterofinterest,Greendiedin1999 attheageof73.

When Green arrived at North there were a mix of experience and players nearing the end of theircareers, buttherewasanewgenerationof young stars just around the corner However, it would be three years before Green and North achievedsuccess.

Green’s SEBFL form in the centre and as a rover was magnificent all season at Tigerland and as a result he won the 1957 Mail Medal for the league’s best and fairest player and was a regularinter-leagueplayer

Histactics, directingtrafficbyinstructingplayers wheretheyweretodelivertheballandhismany high possession games, as well as his brilliant and accurate kicking, made him an inter-league champion.

As well, he was well liked by players and supporters and would eventually lead North to the 1960 premiership after three years of premiershipsuccessbyWest.

Amazingly, after Green won the flag he was sacked and he went to coach West for the next twoyears.

Butin1957Northfellshortofthegrandfinal.

Full back Pat Munn had moved from Penola and was a player upon whom Green could build a tightandruggedNorthdefence.

Munn’s “partner in crime” was centre half back Jack Allison and between them they had a great dislike of forwards and never took a backward step letting them what was ahead of them or in theircase-behindthem!

WITH G GRREEEENNWWOOOOD D

AcrosshalfbackEricRoughana was as tough and fearless as anyone and his dashfromtheflankkeptatightreinonopposing forwards.

In the back pocket Kevin Pedlar had the job of minding the resting ruckmen and he did it well, week-in and week-out Pedlar had amazing judgement and his ability to out mark taller resting ruckmen was important for the Tigers’ defence.

Up forward, North had some emerging young stars in Alf McIntosh, the high flying centre half forward who would go on to play 199 league games for the Tigers and be a four-time premiership player, winning in 1960, 61, 62 and 1964 and runner-up in 1963. He retired one short of 200 league games after suffering a horrificfacialinjury

Harvey Stafford was the young up-and-coming ruckman who started to dominate from this period right through to his retirement at North in about 1966. He would also become a fourtime premiership player and played league at SouthAdelaideandGeelong.

North had four Hanels playing – Les, John, Vic and Bill and at different times they were all in theAgradeteam.

Les would go on to be a long serving committeemanandpresidentatNorth.

Interestingly, forbaseballfans,AlProbertwasin this North A grade side but would switch to baseball the following year and played more than two decades with Central Baseball Club, bothasaplayerandcoach.

Youngster Kerry Aslin was the boundary umpire but would play a significant role in North’s 1964 WBFL finals campaign and eventual premiership.

North club secretary Roy Bent played league footy with Norwood after World War I. As a left footed full forward he was the SANFL’s and Norwood’s top goal kicker in the 1921, 1924, 1925and1926seasons.In1925hesetwhatwas then a State goal kicking record of 65 goals and he played for SA 17 times. He was an important member of Norwood’s 1922 and 1925 premiership wins. He missed the 1923 premiership after being suspended for six games for throwing the football at a boundary umpire in the final minor round match of the season. In 1925 he kicked the winning goal to allow Norwood to win by a point when, with only seconds left on the clock he dobbed a long range left foot drop kick through the big sticks.

In an Australian Championship Carnival match playing for SA against Queensland in 1924 he kicked 12 goals and kicked 11 goals at full forward against Glenelg in 1926 also. Bent was later honoured by being selected in Norwood’s HallOfFame.

After league football he moved to Mount Gambier where he became associated with North Gambier and later became famous for Bent’sCornerwherehishomewassituated. This was on the corner of Commercial Street West and Sutton Avenue (north-west side where a chiropractor is now situated). From memory he ran the Gambier West Post Office near Bent’s Corner. He was club secretary of North for a number of years and in 1957 was heavily involved in recruiting Richie Green as captaincoach.

Bent always walked with what appeared to be a “stifforriggedneck” InDecember1925,hewas onatram/trainandputhisheadoutthewindow as it neared his stop when his head hit a pole causing serious concussion and injury and this virtually ended his SANFL league career althoughhedidplayafewgamesin1926before retiring at aged 26. He played 98 league games and kicked 333 goals As well as a great footballer he was also a top administrator Born inBrokenHillin1900hewasreturningtoMount Gambier from his last visit to his birth town when he was killed in a car accident in 1975, aged75.

ROUNDPREVIEWS

SOUTHGAMBIERVEASTGAMBIER

East Gambier has looked a beer side in this final round of the 2023 season as they have finally been able to sele on a combinaon, pushing both Millicent and North Gambier in recent rounds without gengtheresult.

The Bulldogs head to Blue Lake Sports Park this weekend and will be looking to connue that finetuning when they take on the Demons.

TheflipsideofthatisSouthhasalso shown improvement against the top sides and should be looking at this clash with East as a chance to takescalpbeforetheseasonends.

MorganAmyshouldberighttotake the goal keeper bib for East and her bale with Gracie Dalton will be one of the key match ups of the contest.

South would do well to not look to deliver the ball in the air to Dalton and rather wait unl the young shooter works to the front as both Amy and Bo Creek are so strong aerially.

South goal aack Alyssa Duncan will be aware of that fact and will use her front cuts to great effect as well.

South’s defensive combinaon of SophieWightandEllieBouchierwill need to put in a four quarter performance to deny Renee Henke and Casey Horrigan any easy ball andtooanyscoringopportunies.

Henke and Horrigan are coming off a strong performance against the tough North defence and Wight andBouchierwillneedtorelentless in their commitment to working hardoneononeontheirrespecve opponents.

Tully McShane has a big job as well asshelookstolimittheinfluenceof TarshMcCallum.

East should take the points if they bringtheirformofthepastmonth.

MILLICENTVWESTGAMBIER

It is a top of the table clash at McLaughlin Park this weekend as the 2022 grand finalists go head to head for the final me prior to the 2023finalsseries.

SamKerr’scalfmighthavebeenthe most talked about muscle in Australian sport but in this region it is West Gambier playing coach Lisa McGregor’scalf.

The key Roo rested the minor strain lastweekendbutwhatWestdecide for this weekend remains unclear giventheycannotlosetopspotand thedoublechanceregardlessofthe result.

Fortunately Sarah Rier is such a dominant shooter, West can hedge their bets with McGregor and with Tara Bryant in outstanding form as she uses her speed to hit the circle hard and also is reliable with ball in hand,Westhasplentyoffirepower

D e n y i n g t h o s e s c o r i n g opportunies falls to Pora McRae and Lauren Van Eeden and the young duo has had a strong month, working hard to occupy front posion and using their ability to readtheplaytogreateffect, geng their hands on plenty of feeds to createturnoverball.

The defensive circle is a strength of West with Jade Rier and Amy Cram relentless in their defensive pressure, notjustinmakingittough for their opponents to get the ball, buttheirpressureovertheshotand strongrebounding.

Their clash with Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena will be epic, while Zoe Malseed and Bryant will need to pressure the feeds from Lillie Paul and Daisy Tunkin, who will drive hard and are confident on therelease.

The Saints would love to knock off the Roos ahead of the finals and, especially if McGregor opts for one more week of rest, will get the pointsinaghtarmwrestle.

NORTH GAMBIER V C A S T E R T O N SANDFORD

North Gambier survived a significantscarefromfourthranked East Gambier last weekend and will no doubt be looking to iron out the wrinkles as finals fast approach when they host Casterton Sandford thisweekend.

And for the Cats, it is the second successive round they have had to findawaytodenyatallshootertoo much supply, having taking on Millicent’s Tabatha Sanderson last weekend and now facing the challenge of Grace Pos this weekend.

Pos is in good form at her new home at Vansiart Park and her combinaon with Macey Griffith has developed nicely over the courseoftheseason.

Brianna Walters will also cause headachesfortheCats.Waltershas always been a class act but her past month has seen her arguably ranked the best player in the compeon with her accurate deliveryandincredibleworkrate.

It means Ebany Jarrad, Chelsey Galpin, Chloe Foster and Madeline Paon will need to pressure every feed to hopefully force the Tigers into error and allow keeper C a e l e i g h H u m p h r i e s t h e opportunity to disrupt supply to Pos.

At the other end, Casterton Sandford will need to work the ball with care through what is a ght checkingTigersdefence.

Mel Renko, Lauran Norman, Noni McConnell and Mikalia Pi all pride themselves on one on one defensive pressure and that is withoutconsideringaroleforStella Mobbs.

It means Ivy Lane and Madalene Cleary will earn every scoring opportunity and will need to make every post a winner with McConnell and Pi both strong rebounders.

The Saints showed their intent right from the first whistle in their Island Park clash with Casterton Sandford, seng up a strong lead at quarter me and building on that lead everyquarter

Itwasa10goalleadatquartermeandthen a perfect second quarter shoong performance from Millicent ensured that lead only grew as Tabatha Sanderson and DemiVerbenaputthrough21withoutamiss, while the defensive efforts of the Saints ensured the Cats only enjoyed 10 opportunity, nengseven.

Defensively, Pora McRae and Lauren Van Eeden were working well in tandem to shut down the space for Ivy Lane and Madalene Cleary, while the pressure on the feeders from Lisa Duldig and Lillie Paul also ensured therewereerrorsinthefeeds.

Attheotherend, itwastheslickworkofDaisy Tunkin seng up Verbena and Sanderson, as the young Saints wing aack found the circle’sedgewithmonotonousregularityand alwaysusedtheballwell.

ThethirdquarterwasaghteraffairasCleary and Lane had their best quarter, earning moreshotsastheystartedtofindholesinthe Saints smothering defence and finishing accurately,combiningfor11from13.

But the accuracy of the Saints shooters and their ability to find Sanderson in range ensured the lead connued to extend, with Sanderson converng 16 from 19 and Millicentbuilta32goalfinalchangebuffer

The Saints upped the ante on the defensive pressure again in the last and powered to a 77-34victory.

Despite Sanderson again being the focal point for the Saints, Cats keeper Caeleigh Humphries baled hard and was able to create turnover ball, while at the other end, the work rate of goal aack Madalene Cleary ensured the Cats were able to at least challenge the Saints defensive line and keep theirscoreboardckingover Tunkin and Van Eeden were best for the Saints.

The absence of Lisa McGregor for West Gambier’s clash with South Gambier gave Aleisha Pearson her first start as the A Grade goal aack and the youngster stated strongly as she combined with Sarah Rier to ensure the Roos were in control from the first whistle.

The Demons also had to cover player unavailability with Brandi Bouchier taking the goal keeper bib, combining with daughter Ellie Bouchier in the defensive circle, freeing Sophie Wight onto the defensivewing.

Thefirstquarterwasdominatedbydefensive efforts with the Roos taking a five goal lead intothesecondquarter

It was that quarter that set up the eventual 16 goal victory as the Roos connually found Rierinrange, withtheWestshooterneng 15 from 16 to see the lead blow out to 15 by themainbreak.

Hard running from Tara Bryant and smart placement of the ball from Pearson ensured Rier was able to put the gap on the scoreboard.

But the young Demons bounced back in the third, winning the quarter by five as they draggedthedeficitbackto10goals.

The Bouchier defensive duo applied greater pressure, while Megan Reid and Wight also looked to make things tougher for the West feedersandSouthreapedtherewards.

Their efforts to create turnover ball were rewarded by Gracie Dalton and Alyssa Duncan, who combined for 14 goals without a miss in the Demons best quarter for the match.

was a genuine arm wrestle.

The Bulldogs arguably enjoyed the weight of possession but conversion was an issue and at the first change it was the Tigers by one, with Macey Griffith neng six from six in a composedperformancefromthegoalaack.

East defender Morgan Amy was forced from the court at quarter me with a toe injury, that should not see her out of the game for too long, giving Sharna McKinnon the challengeoftakingonGracePos.

Again it was a ght quarter as neither side could really find any fluency with their ball movement, courtesy of both sides applying strongdefensivepressure.

East shooter Renee Henke ensured her side stayed in touch with a perfect shoong quarterandathalfmeNorth’sleadwasfive.

The lack of me and space for both teams with ball in hand connued in the third and it was the Bulldogs who started to get reward foreffort.

Led by Bo Creek, the defensive efforts of the Bulldogs limited North to only 11 scoring opportunies and with only six finding the mark,Eastwasabletostartworkingbackinto the contest with Casey Horrigan stepping up in the third to convert seven from eight as east took a one goal lead into the final change.

The final quarter was again all about the pressure being applied by both teams but perfect shoong from Griffith and Pos – 12 from 12 – saw the Tigers find themselves on the right side of the scoreboard when the final whistle sounded with the hard fought threegoalvictory.

The reigning premiers responded strongly in the last to push the lead out to the final 16 goalmargin.

EASTGAMBIERVNORTHGAMBIER

Griffith and Brianna Walters, who worked relesslyallgame, bothwithandwithoutthe ball, were best for the Tigers, while Henke’s composure on the shot and Creek’s ability to create turnover ball saw them named best forEast. North Gambier entered the weekend clash with East Gambier on a high from having defeated Millicent for the second me this season but the Bulldogs were unfazed by the Tigers’ impressive form and the first quarter

The girls though showed great determination and played right till the final whistle. We had some super impressive passages of play from defence into attack. Our defensive pressure in our attacking end caused South to turntheballoverbutwejustcouldn’tfinishwitha goal.ThanksU17sforyoursupportagainstSouth. We could certainly hear you! Welldonetothegirlstoday, itwasavery close game!!! Unfortunately, we were unable to match East as they scored a fewlast-minute goals. It was fantastic to watch the immense improvement each girl has had over the season. The girls played as a team, successfully linking the ball down the court, making some seamless passages of play Our defensive pressure was strong, and the girlsallworkedharduntiltheend.

Each week we are making little improvements as a team, which is promising. Today saw Piper play her 50th junior game. Like usual, thelittlepocketrocketranhardall game, getting touches in defense and being a leader for our attack end CongratulationsPiper!

From training drills our game focus was constant ball pressure, blocking initial drives & forcing the opposition to play wide. This defensive pressure created moreopportunitiesforourdefendersto challenge and achieve important deflections & interceptions. Everyone played a confident attacking game displaying good decision making & timing. There were numerous passages of play where the ball flowed freely into ourgoalers.

The girls had another good win this week.Itwasimportantforustocarryon how hard work from the last few weeks and focus on four consistent quarters. We had a really strong first quarter which set up the rest of the game. We were able to make a few changes which showcased the girl’s versatility Raine had an outstanding game in defence, applying constant pressure and taking some amazing intercepts Looking forwardtobuildingintofinalsnow

Best players: Raine Darimaani and Ruby Mitchell

Under17’s:

This week we again took the court without our full team Luckily our versatility allowed us to still fill each position with a strong option Unfortunately, an injury in the first 10 minutesrattledthegirlsalittle, meaning for an inconsistent start The girls regrouped at half time, playing a strong secondhalfwithsomesmoothpassages ofplay Althoughnotourbestgame, the girlscameawaywithastrongwin.

Best players: Jayme Young and Macey Griffith

CGrade:

A slow start yesterday which ended up costing us, going down to East 35-31. The pressure and physicality from the first centre pass had us trying to force plays, challenged our decision making and impacted our accuracy on the scoreboard. To the girl’s credit, we were able to settle and close the gap from quarter time with some great passages of play which we will look to build from. Asolideffortfromthegirlsyesterdayled by our captains Keeley Quinn and Hannah Fox who showed great leadership and set the standards on court. We’ve been playing some great netball in the past few weeks, and we look to continue this into the final two rounds.

Best players: Hannah Fox and Sarah Brown

BGrade:

We came out of the blocks strong and in control of the game. We all played our parts and kept that up for most of the game. A few lapses did see East creep back in, but we were composed and took the W Ruby Mitchel filled in once again and did amazingly in defence with great combination with Kaite. Zarly was strong on the defence wing and got her hands to some great ball. Amelia and Maddyfedthegoalieswelland thatwas finished off with some nice shots. Two more games and if we play like that againhopefullysomegoodresults.

Best players: Katie Dyson and Amelia Redman

AReserve:

This week we could see the results of our focused training coming through. The patients and moving around the attack line looked great, the full court defence was causing lots of turnovers andthedefencelineweresolidasarock with Nat and Riley reading the play well and helping ensure the transition out of defence was straight down the line and linking well with the attack line. We needtocontinuetoworkonourtalkand intensity of game play going forward as it was improved however still more room to grow so let’s continue to focus onthisoverthecomingweeks.

East were playing some good netball and shot with accuracy, and we were waiting for the moment where we gained the momentum, however it didn’t really come as easily as we were hoping. We had many opportunities to put some scoreboard pressure on but didn’tcapitaliseinthegoalcircle.Lauran drove the ball out of defence all game with strength and Mikaila took some good interceptions when we needed it the most. Time to regroup and look to thenextfewweeks.

It is always a tough day coming up against the polished Millicent side. We started well and it’s nice to see the team settling into their positions and playing as a team, backing each other up. Chelsey Galpin and Chloe Fosterhavebeenmovingtheballwell through the middle of the court and their cut and drive movements have been working well, opening up space for each other. The second quarter was a tough one but Madeline Patton’s defensive pressure slowed down the Millicent WA, allowing our defenderstogethandstoalotofball. ThegoaliesofIvy LaneandMadalene Cleary hit their stride in the second half with perfect movement and teamwork That coupled with the defensive pressure and turnovers coming from Caeleigh Humphries and Ebany Jarrad made for a strong finishthatwewerehappywith.

Time for a bit of love for 11 & Under girls who played one of their best games for the season, coming from behind to secure a comfortablewin…

It was great reward for effort for the girls that have been working really hard on their defensive skills and doing a great job of limiting scoring but this week they were also able to get the rewardonthescoreboard…

Lara did a great job in both goal shooter and goal defence and she has been such a great leader thisseason.

Chloe has been working really hard on following court structure and found great space inoffence.

Ebony is super enthusiastic and she is always presenting for her team mates and also working hard defensively to win the ball back.

We welcomed Courtney back after a couple of weeks away and she ran hard in centre and then was dominant in goal attack, combining well with Lacey to keep the scoreboard tickingover

Halle has started to take the ball strongly and also worked hard onthequalityofherpassingand she had some important momentsintransition.

Willow is simply a gun and she is always looking to win the ball back and when we have it she presents time and time again so her team mates have an outlet –agreatadditiontoourclub.

Elsie Attiwill has come along in leaps and bounds over the past month or so and she worked hard to create turnovers and also passed well once we won theballback.

East Gambier East Gambier

Laceyhashadagreatseasonand t h e w e e k e n d w a s n o exception she has court smarts, good skills and finished accurately

Coco has had a super month as everything seems to come together…sheisstickingtocourt structures, finding good space, taking the ball strongly and passingwithaccuracy

Myla is another great little leader in our team and she was outstanding at the weekend, continuallywinningtheballback and being a key link player betweendefenceandoffence.

Lily is another new face who is really hitting her straps – she is a tight checking defender and makes good decisions with ball inhand.

We missed Elsie Sims and Ellie Scotland at the weekend but both have been key players in ourteam.

Elsie is always strong onto the ball and burrows in for those looseballs, whileElliehashadan impact in both offence and defence and her strong voice on courthasbeenamazing.

The 15 & under A girls put West on notice ahead of the finals despite suffering a narrow loss w i t h G ra c i e a n d S h a n a combining well in goals, Ruby and Charlie running hard through the mid court, Halle getting the job done at wing defence and Layla and Tyga applying plenty of defensive pressure.

The B Grade had a hard fought winledbyShelbyandMel,while C Grade suffered a narrow d e f e a t d e s p i t e s t r o n g performances from Chelsea and Alannah at either end of the court.

It was a tough game against a very good North side. We had fantastic passages of play during the game. Let’s re group and keep working hard a training. So proud of the whole squad.
