UMPIRE APPRECIATION ROUND

Umpire Appreciaon round is an iniave of the AFL and SANFL aimed at encouraging all players, coaches, administrators and supporters of our game to appreciate the efforts of nearly 12,000 umpires naonally who officiate every weekend.

Too oen the role of the umpire in our game is overlooked and taken for granted. All umpires who officiate do so with the best intenons of implemenng the 'Laws of the Game' to the best of their ability. This is a difficult task that is somemes viewed in a crical fashion. This weekend the MSEFL would like to show our appreciaon to all our umpires who take up the challenge of umpiring our game.

The key messages we would like to promote as part of Umpire Appreciaon round are –

1. Playing, coaching and umpiring need to have a stronger relaonship – this refers to all of the key parcipants within our game showing a high level of respect for each other. As role models, coaches should always ensure they act appropriately towards umpires.

2. Umpiring is everyone's business – we all need to have a posive impact on the match day environment –this refers to players, coaches, parents, administrators, volunteers, supporters and everyone involved in our game having an impact on the match day environment. If there is abuse and inmidaon towards umpires on match day then the environment can be considered poor, however if there is respect shown towards umpires and a level of tolerance then the match day environment will be posive.

3. New and inexperienced umpires are sll learning the game – New Umpires to our panel are sll learning how to umpire and should be encouraged and supported. No one gets beer sing on the sidelines.

To ensure all umpires are valued and treated with respect, not just today but for the remainder of the season we would encourage clubs to play your part by connuing to encourage team coaches and captains to shake hands with the umpires prior to the coin toss, for all parcipang players to thank and acknowledge the umpires at the end of the game, just like you thank the opposion and invite the umpires into the club aer the match. It is important that we all respect the role of the umpire, so this weekend, think twice about offering that gratuitous advice and instead pat the umpire on the back and say THANK YOU!

This week we turn our aenon to the unsung heroes of our game – the Umpires.

club games 100 shaun beard

kongorong football club

Last week against Kalangadoo Shaun Beard played his 100th senior game for the Kongorong Hawks.

A class act on the wing, Shaun has also been used as a backman at mes, and with no wings now in the Reserves, he is most suited to half forward, with a licence to push up the ground.

His strength is his ability to run all day and find space, he knows when to drop back to fill a hole, and when to aack.

A highlight for Shaun was playing with his son Xavier, in a game last season.

Congratulaons on the 100 game milestone, from all the Hawks players, members and supporters.

Welcome to Round 2 of the MSE compeon for 2023 and our first Home game of the season. Our Home Game Sponsor and Best Player Sponsor today is Teagle Contacng. We appreciate and thank all of our sponsors for this year for all they contribute to the club. We also need to thank all our volunteers who have taken on new roles on and off the playing surface this year to help keep the club running.

Last weekend we travelled to Port MacDonnell and experienced four seasons in one day. It was the best me to play on Port Macs oval but none of our football teams could make use of the condions. It was the first me in a long me we have had all 4 teams losing so hopefully we can get back on track this weekend. Some inspiraon could be taken from the Crows and their performance during Gather Round, Ark Ark.

Junior Colts: The Junior Colts, led by Adam Price again this year had a few key players out and were out run in the 2nd half by a very good side. It was an even contest early on, but it didn't help when one of our Captains, Tighe Hurley went down early in the 1st quarter with a broken wrist. The kids have lost some of their top age players from last year but will sll be right up there this year baling for finals posions as we have a quality ouit. Best players were Kallan Price, Samuel Haase, Bailey Dale, Jed Sinkunas, Connor Tweddle and Blake Gosden.

Senior Colts: The Senior Colts are this year being led by Will Maloney. They came up against an always strong Pt Mac Senior Colts and ended up going down 61 to 13. These lads showed good fight and effort throughout the whole game and once they get the chance to gel and train together more oen, we will see huge rewards on the field. We have a lot of junior colts who have come up this year, and some new recruits who have come out for a kick. A lot more numbers to fill a side will make it a lot easier on the team physically and the coaches.

Reserves: The Reserves have a new coach this year in Ben Hentschke, we appreciate Ben taking on this role as he is now a respected veteran amongst the club. Unfortunately, Ben was away this weekend and his back up Dave Hurley had to help his son aend hospital. Adam Price stepped in to take the reigns and with only 16

players and no rotaons the boys were in for a ring first game. It was a busy week for Ben to try and find enough players and with 2 blokes pulling out the morning of the game it makes it very difficult. Although Pt Mac only won 1 game last year, they have made a lot of improvements to their list and were far too good for us. We struggled to get the ball forward and struggled to match their running game. Well done to those that filled in and played 2 games. Our Captain this year is Ben Curran with Trent Hawke the Vice Captain. Best players were James Kipping, Jayson Finnis, Trent Hawke, Isaac Stubberfield, Mitch Boyd and Bevan Lipscombe.

Seniors: The Seniors also had a very evenul first game to the year with 8 first choice players either away or pulling out before Saturday. Thankfully, none of these were because of injury and they should nearly all be back this round. Due to the Reserves being so short on numbers it meant we had 5 Senior Colts playing and 1 Reserves player playing 2 games. Not an ideal start to the year. To make maers worse our Coach, Tom Edwards missed the game as his wife was in labour during the game. We congratulate them on the birth of their new baby boy. This meant Dylan Childs took charge of the team. We started well and were able to match Pt Mac for most of the first half. Aer half me we struggled to find avenues to goal and in the last quarter we didn't have a bench and blokes wanted to come off with no one to swap with meaning they ran over the top of us. The scoreboard flaered them a lot as it was not that one sided, but we do have a bit of work to do. Best players were Dylan Pfitzner, Patrick Mitchell, Jack Edmonds, Brodie Glynn, Dylan Childs and Lachlan Brierley. A big shout out to Lachlan, Digby, Josh, Brodie, Kaleb and Shannon who all had to play 2 games and did extremely well with some making their debuts for the club in A grade. Zacc Cocks also led us courageously and has been renamed Captain for this year

Today we welcome Hatherleigh as all sides hunt for their first win. We will be holding our first Social Event of the year 'SHUFFLE NIGHT' at the club aer the game. Please get your songs to Jack Miller before Saturday if you can. $10 a song. Last song played on the night wins. Other prizes will be available.

HATHERLEIGH EAGLES

football club notes seniors

Well here go again!! Where did the off season go? 2023 has certainly been just as busy as 2022 with preparaon for the season ahead.

This year Gerard ‘Rigga’ McGrath will lead our A grade and with some personal changes hopefully can go 1 beer this year.

Thorny leads the B grade again as they chase 5 in a row and with a good blend of age and youth should give it a real shake again this year

Jed ‘Fridge’ Telfer leads our senior colts again and will certainly be geng these young men for their transion into senior footballers.

senior colts

Cluffy once again put his hand to coach the junior colts and has also joined the league junior commiee which goes to show how much he enjoys developing young footballers and as always will do a fantasc job again.

New to the coaching scene Jacob Lang takes over as under 11 coach and is really excited for the year ahead. I reckon starng off his career as a teacher and coaching under 11s will certainly re him out but will also be a lot of fun for him and lastly on the

junior colts

coaching posions Josh Wight will lead our auskickers. These budding young stars start in term 2 and will look to tear up the oval during the half me break of the A grade so please show your support for them.

Thanks to all our coaches for pung your hand up as it’s a tough job but all our grades are in great hands and the Hatherleigh family wish you all great success in 2023.

As always running the football/netball club takes a lot of work and we’re always looking for helpers so when your on your roster please do your best to do your shi or swap with someone so our leaders aren’t le short staffed and running around trying to organise someone else to do your shi. If you have a spare hour let us know and we’ll find something for you to help with. We also look forward to welcoming new players, families and supporters to our club this year.

Good luck to all football and netball grades and I look forward to watching 2023 unfold.

Go Eagles!

We started the season off at Kalangadoo, with a tough and enjoyable game of footy. The determinaon from every player being the smallest or the biggest in the team was pleasing to see. All players tackled and kicked well. Thank you to Boxy for his efforts in encouraging and direcng the youngsters, it certainly goes a long way in their development as footballers. Awards: Intersport - Nash Brant, Presidents Award - Vann Byron, Rob & Amy Whiy Award - Ryder Telford, Club Award - Harry Collins, Coaches AwardJudd Buntsma, Donut King - Mac Brant.

next two quarters we struggled with ball movement and hing targets but there was some strong points with effort from certain individuals keeping us grounded! Coming into the last quarter a few goals down I just wanted to see some effort and geng back to our basics which we did, and it was pleasing to see. At the end of the day going down 60 to 27, Kalangadoo's way, which wasn't the start we hoped for but with a very new group from last year I'm happy to see some foundaons we can work with. With Kalangadoo having mulple WB permit players, and us sll having to lend players to make it a game, it will be a different story later in the season when it's crunch me. Best players this week were:

1st - Ryan Lucas, 2nd - Harrison Elletson, 3rd - Will Von Stanke, 4th - Logan Cordy, 5th - Jobe Janeway, 6th - Blake Telford.

off to a very excing start. It was very much a surprise to myself and Paechy with how strong they performed for a great four quarter effort. Our three captains showed great leadership and led from the front with Ryan Lucas taking home the Lucas Family Award, Blake Telford with the Aussie Disposals Voucher and Declan Richardson third best with the Spot On Fishing Voucher. Axel Page showed how versale he can be all around the ground with the Janeway Plumbing Award, Koby Galloway showed how he can handle himself in the midfield, as a first year junior, with the Paradise Pizza Award and Noah Von Stanke-Dowie, with a couple goals to get us going early then playing down back to finish off with, the Coaches Award. Just a special menon to all the younger blokes who played a cracking first game and very unlucky to a couple to miss out on best players. Sam McInnes with some beauful one percent efforts such as his shepherding, and Angus Maidment with his first crack down back with good tackle pressure and sneaking a goal late in the game. Good job boys - carry it into this week's game!

Senior Colts: Finally aer a hard, consistent preseason we headed down to the 'doo knowing we were in for some wet condions which we definitely received! The message heading out into the first quarter was just to play how we had trained the last few months. We started consistently moving the footy fast but got a bit outclassed around the contest with just not enough want for the ball! Aer a stern word at half me with some construcve cricism we moved forward. Through the

Reserves: Good to be back into it again. Coming up against the grand finalists from last year was always going to be a test and happily enough we were up to it. A great first half set up the win as not to any one's great surprise fitness fell away in the second half. Massive congratulaons to Shaun Beard who played his 100th game for the club and was excellent. Mark Paech in his return to the club was awarded the Collins Ct Butcher Award, Sandy Cameron –Killara Food Centre, Harry Maddern –Commercial Hotel, Joel Maconachie - Club Tea Award, Shaun Beard – Pick Ave Award and Braidon Frost – Club Tea Award.

Seniors: The boys started off the game well, moving the ball cleanly and fluently, but unfortunately losing a mid rotaon in the first quarter, in Ricky Hay doing a knee injury, would later on cause the boys to have to put in a few extra miles through the first half. They maintained their lead and looking very damaging coming out aer half me the boys held their own, unl halfway through the 3rd where we had alot of trouble with cramp and allowed Kalangadoo to get back within reach. The last quarter turned in a goal for goal scenario where unfortunately we had a few extra aempts, but we weren't able to put through the scks and Kalangadoo managed to finish off ending up on top. Good signs from alot of new players and a few other previous players stepping up to the plate. Looking forward to a good hit out against the Bay when we play for the Bruce Lightbody Memorial Shield.

Junior Colts: Last Saturday saw us come up against a tough opposion in Glencoe. With a team full of new faces, it was always going to be excing to see what the team would produce. From the first bounce we were able to see plenty of endeavour and encouragement with the way every player was able to aack the ball and do what was needed when it was their turn. We managed to get a score on the board early in the first quarter to ease some nerves in the team. From there we played some scrappy football that was expected being our first game together but then followed it up with a strong performance in the last quarter kicking into a slight breeze. It was a team effort that we should be proud of. Best players sponsored by Kaboom Captain Zane Lewis for an all round performance through the midfield. Harry Carroll for some great movement and ball winning up forward and through the mid-field (just need to work on that kicking boot). New player to the club Kane Gilbert who consistently won contested ball and provided drive through the centre and half back lines. Cayden Byrne with some fantasc forward presence and ball use oen resulng in scores. Harrison Kennion who was excellent in the ruck early then with some amazing defensive efforts deep down back. All the best for this week at Kongorong with a Port Mac Legend in the GREAT Ben McGregor at the helm for the week.

Senior Colts: The boys started the game really well, bringing the heat right from the first bounce with high pressure and intent allowing us to get a nice lead early in some wet condions. Throughout the game the boys displayed some great passages of play, some that could be more suited to beer condions, but the teamwork, willingness to work for each other and the intent/general idea of how the boys need to play to have a good season were certainly all there. In the end, a great team effort ended up in a 48-point win for our young Demons. Best players sponsored by Alora Conveyancing Luke Richards, Riley Morgan, Alex Lamb, Brodie Anderson, Bradley Neale and Zeb Chant.

B Grade: If you could imagine the opening sequence to Top Gun (’83) and the music that builds with the ancipaon of great things to come, heroic acts and edge of your seat thrills today’s first round of MSE footy delivered! Well…most of it! The crowd turned out to welcome in the new 2023 season and the Bay weather, though it started with rain, finished with plenty of sun. The playing surface, lovingly restored over the summer break, looked like a shining emerald and showed no signs of wet patches, rabbit holes or blatant anklebreaking unevenness with full credit to the ground staff who turned our “muddy patch” into a ground fit for the grand final. With the departure of Ryan Donovan as coach, Adam “Cyril” “Addy” Lewis has once

again taken over the helm and all the headaches that entails. Today’s opening match brought back some senmental favourites in Ben O’Dine, Ma Roscow and Blake Lynch whose experience showed when the quarters seemed longer and finding that extra breath was almost impossible, moving the ball with precision from the centre half back line providing plenty of opportunity for the younger players in our forward area. Seasoned ruck stalwart Baz O’Dine and Captain Rory Narass gave the boys plenty of touches from the main bounce and around the ground both rucking and pushing the ball forward at every opportunity, earning them both a berth in the best players. Aer a long absence, surprise packet of the day was Jack Cawthorne returning with all the former glory he showed years before , bagging himself a couple of handy goals and using the ball with effortless skill. We can now say we have gravity on our side with “Newton’s” law, as father and son duo, Ben and Tarquin Newton kicked seven goals between them, proving the apple never falls far from the tree! Blair Cung booted a triple also and gave us a reliable target up forward and some much needed grunt in the forward line up earning a B.O.G. Ryan Von Stanke, Ma Roscow and Jack Cawthorne all had 2 goals apiece while our up and coming senior colts Alex Lamb, Bradley Neale, Kurs Lasle and newcomer Jai Lile all managed a goal each. The boys did a fantasc job wherever they were placed around the ground and with an energy level that would not have you believe they had just played (and won convincingly) a full game beforehand. With this team lineup and the level of play, today would almost have you thinking that a finals berth may be in the offing, however ,we all know this is only the first match and B Grade at best is a “Mystery Pick” each week! Lack of training, fitness and apathy are the biggest killers of team success and club morale. So I urge you to get out there , train, volunteer for a job, take your turn on the gate or the bbq and support our club. Show everyone why we are a great family club in a great “Family League” because there could be a very different scenario in 2024. If the saying goes “Start as you mean to finish”…..then I feel the need …the need for speed!

A Grade: It was great to get a win. It was good to see the team come together and put to pracce what we have been working on over the pre season. There are improvements that we can work on but overall for a first game; I was proud of the boys and how they went about their footy Keen to go over to Kongorong and play the Anzac round that I hear is a famously compeve match between the two clubs. Best players for the day, Tom Sullivan, Aaron Harding, Lockie Tilley, Will Macdonald, Ned Wilke and Mark Smith. Goal kickers, Ned Wilke - 4, Colby Munro, Chisan Howle, Tom Sullivan - 2, Aaron Harding, Jake Schleter, Jake Turner, Adam Kuhl, Zack Williams, Issac Narass, Kyall McClean - 1.

Senior Colts: New year new team, the boys were keen as mustard to get back out on the track, training hard leading up to round 1. We took on tant on what looked to be a wet day, starng off an arm wrestle in the first qrt tant decided to put the foot down for the rest of the game out playing us across the ground. Good signs was that our game plan works well when the boys put in the work rate. Something to address this week at training. Best players were Max Robertson, Kaiden Carter, Archie Haggert, Jimmy Murch kicking 4 and Mason Mckenny kicking 1. Incenves Steve’s place Andrew Wells and Denton sports power Blake Whylie.

B Grade: Aer having a great pre-season for the B grade and unable to have a proper trial match as a group, we travelled to Tantanoola to see where we would be in the compeon this year. From the start the team did what was asked of them. Voice, run, keep the ball moving forward and one percenters. This is what we did over all four quarters and it was a relief to see.

Cornish, Paddy, Bram out of the centre ran all day and made sure we locked the ball in our forward half. Bailey Walker at centre half back used his voice to set up the backline. Birdy lead well up forward kicking 6 goals 4. I really could not fault any player on the field. It was a great team effort by all. Thanks to Kaden Carter for his first senior game for the roosters and he kicked himself a lovely goal.

It was a great first game to get the year started and I thank Tantanoola for their efforts. Luckily for us we came away with the win Tantanoola 18 to Robe 128.

I would also like to thank Roly, Henry, Cobba, Bree, Ferg and Deb for helping me get ready for the first game of the round. With out these guys it would not have happened so thank you very much.

Go Roosters!

A Grade: The A Grade match was played in almost perfect football condions with a slight breeze favouring the town end of the Tantanoola Oval and no rain.

The first quarter developed into a bale between the half back lines of both teams as everyone was a bit rusty and constantly turned the ball over. Robe was wayward up forward as the new players to the club were trying to establish a system while Tantanoola had few inside fiies but got maximum return for their effort and subsequently lead at quarter me.

Robe eventually got its forward system working and connually kept pushing the ball forward but was having some difficules converng forward entries into goals, while its defence was starving the gers of goal scoring opportunies.

This trend connued through the match and Robe did fix its inaccuracy in front of goal and ran out comfortable winners.

Robe had no passengers but was best served by Brown and Duon out of the centre, who used their pace and skill to set up their forwards, Deane at CHB and Hawker at CHF who controlled their spheres of influences and dominated the match while Bryant on the wing used his athlec abilies and penetrang kick as a link between the defence and the forward lines.

Round 1 saw us host Kongorong on a fine Autumn day. The rain held off aer the under 11s finished, and made for 4 close contests.

Under 11: A huge turnout for Under 11’s last Saturday against Kongorong with over 25 kids turning up for a game. The kids are really starng to improve and develop into skilful players who are prepared to share the ball and bring their teammates into the game. The parents and kids would really like to thank the Kalangadoo Football Club Commiee for the purchase of the new playing helmets. The kids enjoyed wearing them and important to enable the kids to be safe whilst playing a game they enjoy.

Under 14: Came up against a much taller and stronger side this week. The kids have definitely improved over the off-season and will definitely upset a few sides this year. Our numbers are really strong with 24 listed to play on Saturday, the future is bright for this group.

Under 17: Started off the day concerned about numbers, having 13 players. Luckily the group is full of quality young players. Connor Genle kicked 5 on ball and first gamers Bryce and Nate VonstankeDowie dominated the clearances all day, both will be huge assets for the club. Coop McCann was lively up forward as well.

B Grade: A very different side took the field Saturday to take

on Kongorong compared to the stability of the side over the last couple of seasons. Although we welcomed several new players for their first game the lads performed well however were beaten by a much stronger and fier Kongorong team. Nathan Reeves and Jacob Simmonds were the best players on the ground for Kalangadoo providing really solid defence for the whole game. Big Man Liam Hay was great in the ruck and provided Mark Phillips, Kevin Stark & Nick Jenkins with many clearance opportunies with all these players being named in the best. Hopefully, we see some players return from injury this week and more players on the training track as we prepare to take on a very strong Robe side

Seniors: Kongorong started very fast and were well and truly on top in the 1st half of the game. Up by 6 goals at one stage. Dylan Bromley kicked 5 and sloed a crucial goal on half me to edge their lead back to 4 goals. Thankfully first me coach Al rallied the troops aer half me and we ran out victors by 4 goals. Sam Mac was named best on, with Fatchy, Manes and Bomma rounding out the top 4 best players.

Thankfully the weather stayed away for our game and both teams were able to play some good football. Junior Colts: We started our year off last week against a strong Robe team but to our boys credit we showed glimpses of how good we can play when we work together as a team. We welcomed some new faces into our team in Jackson and Eli Grant and this week Grace Altshwager will play her first game. Unfortunately the scoreboard didn't show how compeve we were but as the weeks go on I feel we are gonna click and get some good wins on the board. Best players for us were our two captains Kaden and Jake, Jedd, Hunts and the Bromley boys. Keep workings lads we are heading in the right direcon. Special menon to the three under 11s that came up and will play a lot of games with us this year in Jack, Max and Jackson.

Senior Colts: We kicked off the 2023 season against a very good Robe ouit. With a lot of new guys being welcomed into the side having never played together we weren't sure how the side would gel. Aer a very strong first half of moving the ball through the corridor and geng our running game going, we managed to kick away. Very proud of the boys four quarter effort and we are excited to see what we can

Reserves: Start of the season saw us facing off against Robe at home. With only 5 of last years players and plenty of new ones, was a great sight to see some instant moulding around each other and new guys picking up the Tiger spirit. Outclassed and outran, Robe took away the win but definitely took so many posives out of our first rumble. Looking forward to Mt Burr in a night game to mix it up.

Seniors: Aer an excellent preseason with over 15 new faces to the club we took on Robe who have really recruited some great players and are very well structured. We started really well with kicking the first couple and the midfield playing well. The backline baled all day but Robe slowly started geng on top as the game progressed. Their tall side and structure was too strong as they ran out the game. The score board is irrelevant to us as we have a plan with a young group and everyone is working towards our 2023 goal. Best player's Darcy Pink, Braydn Reilly, Will Scanlon, Corey Baker and Brandon Pis. Good work boys keep baling the hard work will pay off.

Hallie's shoong and movement in the circle earnt her second best and the encouragement award went to Gracie for her fantasc defensive pressure.

15 & Under: A great game today girls, first wet game for the season. Our defence applied great pressure and readjusted their game to the play. Mid court fought and a picked up many loose balls, and were able to capitalise on some of these on the score board. Shooters moved well, with ght defensive pressure.

Amelie played well and had a 'never give up' atude she was given best today (Maloney Plumbing). Ruby Buckley played well and had many finger ps to balls. Kloe Phillips had a constant smile on her face and moved well in the mid court. Well done girls!

17 & Under: Great to start the season and it was terrific to put in to play some of what we've been praccing. With loads of physical play throughout the game it looks like we're set for a promising year There was some excellent teamwork and we just need to keep control when we have possession. Zoe worked relessly all day and was awarded best player (Degaris Lawyers) with Kayla strong in defence to earn second best, and our encouragement award went to Jenna who applied herself well to a new posion.

B Reserve: Today's game proved a very encouraging start to the season girls! With loads of physical play, we fought hard, but unfortunately went

down by 5. There were some fantasc passages of play and our movement of the ball down the court improved quarter by quarter Connuing our intensity through the four quarters, leading to the ball, and creang space for each other will set us up for a promising season. Some excellent defensive teamwork by Jacinta and Karli with support from Jaz resulted in many turnovers and we worked well for a brand new team! Jacinta's reless efforts and consistency through the four quarters won her best player (Key2Sale), Karli earned second best and Jaz earned the encouragement award. Well done girls!

B Grade: It was a bit of a tough start to the season with a few players out ad a lot of posional changes throughout the game. A big thank you to the four girls who filled in and played it is very much appreciated! Overall, a great amount of effort was put in by everyone, now we look forward to next week with a full team back. Best players went to April (24/7 Car and Dog Wash) and Amy for their constant efforts.

A Reserve: A tough start to the season with lots of girls away –meaning that we had to play new combinaons all over the court. Thank you to Zoe, Tamara and Kayla for filling in for us. Jorja had a good game driving strongly to the post and stood up well in her first full me seniors appearance. Sam and Sammy combined well down in the defensive end and blocked out amazingly to get most of the rebounds. Jessie didn't miss a beat coming back from pregnancy. She drove hard all day and contested ball all over the court. Lots of posives to come out of the game girls. Let's sele into our normal side this week and have a seled game. Best players were Tamara Ferguson (B&P Travel and Cruise) and Jorja Mitchell.

A Grade: What a great start to the season! With new defensive, goalie and midcourt combinaons it was unknown how we would gel in a proper match. I was really proud of the intent that we started the game with. We came out firing in aack with Alice and Donna finding Chantelle with ease under the post. Chantelle you held strong all game against a tough defence and finished accurately. Great first game from Alice, who persisted and persisted every contest. Chelsea also had a good first game in the defensive circle and will only grow with confidence and our combinaon. Donna led from the front and took some impressive intercepts while also doing a huge workload in aack. You should all be very proud of pung out that performance in our first game. Onto the next! Best players were Donna Jaeschke (O'Brien Electrical) and Chantelle Cocks.

NETball club notes

Season 2023 is upon us and the Hatherleigh Netball Club have a very versale and eager group of A grade players ready to take the court. A good mixture of players who can play goalie in Demi Vanderhorst, Maddie Pulmer. Mid courters with Tegan Telfer, Erin Watson, Rosie Nele and Georgia Hunter all quick and strong through the mid court. Lara McGregor strong in defence and Maddie Redman has the ability to play both ends of the court. New player Ash Broad will be a welcome edion coming from Kongorong and returns aer having a year off and her first child. A Young athlec junior from Under 17 coming into senior netball sees Elly Redden taking the court.

Although no set team has been named the these most likely all look to play A grade in the first few weeks. With a bye for the first round and only one player missing from last year in Chelsea Galpin who has returned to Penola.

NETball club notes

Junior 2: What a start to the season! Lots of first season players on the court today and did they show some tenacity, enthusiasm and skill. Coupled with some more experienced girls, we saw everyone touch the ball numerous mes with some good intercepts and flow of the ball from defence to offence and vice versa. While we don't technically score in J1 and 2, the ball moved consistently for both teams into the goal circle the whole game, with the final scoreline being a draw. If we connue to get to know each other, use our voices and capitalise on each player's netball 'superpower(s), we are going to have a great season in 2023. Awards today go to Sianna for her reless work in the mid court and her defensive pressure in the second half (Kaboom voucher) and Maya (Zambreros) who gave 100% in every posion she played, reading the ball well and trying to get front posion when in defence and aack. Be proud of your efforts today girls…go Hawks!

Junior 1: Brilliant start to the season. First quarter all Kongorong players showed great defence and handled the ball well. Zoe seled in well with her strong defence and Claire was intercepng plenty of passes. Lily's accurate shoong with a few goals up her sleeve and Adel shoong one aswell. A couple of players got injured but came back on the court strong. Great work girls! Zoey best player (Kaboom voucher) and Claire (Zamberos).

13 & Under: Well done on a tough game girls. Super proud of each and every one of you for not giving up and for giving it your all. The rain made it tough to control the ball and we struggled against some tall players, but overall it was a great first game for our team. Awards went to Sophie for great persistence in defence (Zambreros), and Lily for geng front and chasing up every loose ball (Kaboom).

15 & Under: Well done girls! Very proud effort for our first game. Very tough game especially for our defence, some tall shooters at the doo but we had hands over everything and made them work for it. Now we know the work we need to do but awesome first game! Best players go to Rahni Janeway (She's

Apples) and Lily Foster (Arena Sports Store). Final score 67-2.

17 & Under: Great game today girls, really proud that we were able to walk away with the win! Although we showed some great passages of play throughout the game, there are also lots of small things that once we're able to dy up, will make us a team to be reckoned with. Awards to Paige Hicks (Birdy Blue) and Evie Sealey (F45).

B Reserve: What a good start to the season, everyone worked really hard and you all came together as a team. Izzy and Tamika worked well in the goals for the first me together. Lea and Courtney defended well and Julie, Marnee & Zoe worked hard through the centre court. Both Courtney & Marnee got some good intercepts and were able to turn the ball around. Awards were hard to pick today as everyone did a good job, but Izzy received the Vanity award for her shoong and Courtney received the She's Apples award. Keep up the good work today against Port Mac girls.

B Grade: Bad luck girls, we've got a lot to work on at trainings. I'm proud of you all for not dropping your heads. Hope Jess is feeling beer soon. Awards went to Lyl Page (Arena) and Maddie Bowd (F45).

A Reserve: Welcome to season 2023! Blowing the cobwebs out and started the first quarter well. Good voice over the court and helping each other out with where to go and other opons. Looking forward to developing our combinaons and having a great season. Awards – Georgia Bald (Vanity) & Em Nicholson (Arena).

A Grade: I am very proud of all of your efforts today girls. It was a tough ask of us to come out against such a quality side but I think we approached the game well. We were prey consistent within ourselves considering its round 1 and showed some real potenal for our season. We need to remember to communicate and talk and be proud of our efforts on court. The highlight of our game was our defensive pressure across the court with everyone taking ownership and accountability Best today went to Ebony Lawson (Lima and Co) and Emily Lightbody (Confessions).

NETball club notes

Junior 2: Well done girls, while some of you have played netball before, today was the first game for many of you, it was wonderful to see the excitement and nerves on your faces! You all should be really proud of your efforts, it will take a lile while to find your feet and learn the rules and posions. It's really important to listen at training, to help our game on Saturdays. Lucy and Milah did a great job in defence, Pippa did an awesome job and never gave up in C against a much taller opposion. Emilee and Desny showed their experience and got their hands to a lot of balls, Ellie ran hard all day and provided some good leads. Ruby and Imogen didn't see a lot of the ball at GS, but they both did some good work in defence. Keep working hard and you will all see the improvement and learning happening as the weeks go on. I'm excited to see where this season takes you. The McDonalds awards went to everyone this week! Well done girls.

Junior 1: Great game today girls, you all listened & did what was asked of you. Really good effort for your first game together. Few things we will work on at training this week. Great defence by Ava and Skyla. Zaria and Eliza shot some great goals. Thank you to McDonald's for sponsoring us with vouchers for all the girls on their first game for the season.

13 & Under: Port MacDonnell 18 defeated by Glencoe 34. A quiet start to our game today, it took us a while to sele in and sele our nerves, although once we found our voices we started to trust each other more and played well as a team. We fumbled the ball slightly but once we gathered our composure and didn't pace our play to Glencoe we found our skills came alight. Defensive efforts shined within the second half of the game when we stuck closer to our opponents, and had some amazing court plays traveling down the court towards the very last quarter. Awards: Lily Pengill (Fasta Pasta), Mia Spehr (McDonalds).

15 & Under: Port Macdonnell 53 defeated Glencoe 17. Where do I even start girls. Everyone played so amazing, and made the game look as if you had all been playing together for ages. I am so proud of everyone and their efforts in today's game. The transion down the court was a bit hickle pickle in the first quarter, but aer the first quarter break everyone took into account what I asked them to do, and everyone put that into acon in the next three quarters. From then onwards the transion down the court was astounding. Everyone's defensive pressure was amazing, as was the leadership over the court from all. Layla did absolutely everything we asked of her to do. She shut her player out and did some wicked front cuts and intercepts. Bree absolutely dominated all over the court and found herself geng touches every chance she got. Both Layla and Bree worked exceponally well together, and they are an awesome combo to have for our team. Our lile WD's Lily and Chelsea smashed it out there today. Had beaufully presented hands and pressure over the ball, then did their best both to block the WA and eliminate them from the game. Jasmine found herself in a new posion today, she ran a whole game out in centre. Top effort mate, your leadership on the court was awesome, and you presented yourself so well and got your hands to many balls! Our WA's Bella and Isla both had beauful drives, and fed our goalies to the best of their abilies. They did everything I asked of them. Both are there a lot of the me but need to be confident and use their voice to say they are there and free. Bailee had exceponal presence all over the court, and moved and shot beaufully. Your leadership and direcon on court was wicked. Finally Chloe, another player who was put in an unfamiliar posion and absolutely smashed it! Every lile bit of advice and ps given to Chloe, she would listen and do exactly what was asked of her. Once Chloe found that confidence and groove in her posion she proved to be a very valuable goalie that I look forward to connuing to work with! These girls are the future of our club, and boy does it look bright. Keep up the awesome work everyone! Awards: Chloe Day (Subway), Jasmine Morgan (Arena).

17 & Under: Port MacDonnell 50 defeated Glencoe 38. Aer a preseason of really tough work put in by our 17U girls, the season is finally underway! Round one saw us face off against a well rounded Glencoe side and we knew we'd have our work cut out for us. Our

team captain, Lara Wilson won the toss and scored us the first goal of the game, providing some confidence and excitement to the rest of the team. A dominant performance by Sophie Lewis through the centre saw the Demons up 4 at the quarter me break. Glencoe managed to level the scores early in the second but the defensive duo of Alicetyn Stanley and Bridie McPherson worked hard to get us the stops we needed to get some points on the board before half me. New to the club, Lilly Day was a dead eye in goals, shoong accurately all day to connue to build the lead for the Demons in the third quarter to see us up by 10 at the final break. In the last quarter, the lock down pressure of wing defence Lillie Lamb meant that we were able to finish the game strong and convert our stops into scores. A fantasc team game played by all girls let us get the win over the compeve Glencoe side, but it was Chloe Newton who came away with the best player award, for her excellent drive up the court, safe hands and accurate circle feeding. Next weeks game will prove to be another tough one against Kongorong who had a big win over Kalangadoo in round one, so be sure to get out and support your 17U Demons girls! Awards: Chloe Newton (The Bay Pizzeria).

B Reserve: Port MacDonnell 21 defeated Glencoe 16. A win to start off is a win, wasn't prey but over the line. We must have good spacial awareness when working with each other in aacking and moving the ball out of defence. Keep our heads up and see the ball at all mes. Awards: Arriella Smith (Shipwreck Bistro, Victoria Hotel Port MacDonnell), Fiona (The Bay Pizzeria).

B Grade: Port MacDonnell 50 defeated Glencoe 31. Playing in warm weather condions today, it was an extremely impressive start to the 2023 season. Everyone worked hard, showing grit and determinaon. We started the game strongly and worked the ball around paently to maintain possession and score. The defence combinaon of Rachel, Jenni, Elivia and Sophie worked well to get touches and intercepons. We treasured the turnovers and scored from our gains. The backup around the court enable us to gather the ball and convert. Posioning and passing around the circle edge was well balanced by Sophie and Candice. They opened up the circle for our goalies to find posion under post. The ball delivery from both Sophie and Candice was well med to player movement. Both De and Jess worked well together complemenng each other's movements. Jess held well under post to be a great focal point. Rachel moved well in defence covering opons and med her movement to make some great gains. The drive down court was strong and hard to the ball, many passages were well executed and spectacular to see. We sll have things to work on and tweak, but today was a great opening game! Thanks to U17's Sophie and Alicetyn for their contribuon to today's result. Awards: Jess Grigg (Shipwreck Bistro, Victoria Hotel Port MacDonnell), Rachel Johnstone (Fasta Pasta and F45).

A Reserve: Port MacDonnell 46 defeated Glencoe 27. What a way to start the season, it was a great team effort by all. We took the lead early and were able to come away with a solid win. Awesome effort by our defence today, who kept working hard and got many touches and turn overs. Our aack line looked a lot beer and felt a lot more open. It was great to see that what we are praccing at training is working. Let's keep working hard and keep the posive atude happening as it definitely helps change the dynamic on and off the court.

Awards: Cody Manning (F45 & Kirralie Jade), Kate Winterfield (Shipwreck Bistro, Victoria Hotel Port MacDonnell).

A Grade: Port Macdonnell 36 defeated by Glencoe 41. Well done today girls, our first full on hit out as a team and it was a solid effort by everyone on court. Tough, physical and fast paced game but we managed to hold in there, only losing by 5. We sll have a lot to work on and improve as a team, but it will come over me and when we build our confidence up as individual players and as a team, we will definitely be a side to watch. Our defence worked overme today, with Alysha and Alana who fought hard all game and came away with many turnovers. It was our passing and poor choices that let us down today. Let's keep working hard and keep building on the foundaons we have started to create as a team. Awards: Alana Berkefeld, sponsored by J O Berkefeld (Intersport), Alysha Coon, sponsored by K&S (Birdie Blue).

Kalangadoo 68 def Kongorong 26

Kalangadoo commenced the match against the young Kongorong side with intent, driven by the high work rate of goal aack Abbey Duncan. Kongorong's Riley Buckingham and Emily Lightbody adjusted to the quick pace of Kalangadoo's goal circle and worked relentlessly to curb the influence of Duncan. Kalangadoo went into the first quarter break with a lead 17 to 5.

Both teams remained unchanged during the second quarter. Kongorong's centre Ebony Lawson worked hard to find space and feed her goalies Tilah Buckingham and Sarah Gardin, who were forced to adjust and reoffer due to the ght defence of Kalangadoo's defensive circle. Due to a blood injury to Riley Buckingham early in second quarter, Kongorong brought Jasmin McKinnon on for a short me.

Kalangadoo's defence stepped up their pressure, causing intercepts and touches in the centre third. Goal shooter Ebony McDiarmid posioned herself as a focal point in aack and contributed to Kalangadoo going into the main break with a 25 goal lead.

The third quarter saw both teams maintain a high level of work rate and saw Riley Buckingham make an impact defensively, using her speed to take some ming intercepts.

The final quarter saw a high work rate from both teams and Kalangadoo's circle defence connued to work hard and made the most of rebounding opportunies. Kalangadoo were able to convincingly run the game out strongly to finish 68 goals to Kongorong 26.

Best players - Kalangadoo: Abbey Duncan, Lauren Kain; Kongorong: Ebony Lawson, Emily Lightbody.

Nangwarry 39 lost to Mt Burr 63

Nangwarry pushed back and their defence worked overme with Kayla Gray geng some great hands to the ball and they transioned well down the court with Demi Hoffmeister scoring well for the Saints this quarter, being an even quarter, scoring 11 each.

In the second quarter the Mozzies really came out firing geng a real jump on Nangwarry. Mt Burr's defence end really ghtened up and made Nangwarry work for every goal. Megan Thiele started to really pick up the pace geng hands to so many balls for the Burr. Hayley Burner and Schultz were having a good tussle this quarter with both driving well for their teams, but Nangwarry struggled to get it out of defence at mes. Ebony

Clarke lied this quarter and was combining well with Lauren Wheeler, making Gray and Chrystal Lock really work for any touches. The half me score Saw Nangwarry trailing by 12. Nangwarry made a change pung Lock to WD and bringing on Jemma Parsons to GD. Mt Burr bought Simone Westerman on to WD and Caitlyn Payne swapping to WA. Nangwarry lied a bit more this quarter being a bit more even. Kate Bizko really started to move and posion well along with some good feeding by Cassie Dinnison and Burner. Wheeler was moving and rebounding well for the burr and Clarke connued her accuracy. Thiele was really making Hoffmeister work for every goal. The score at three quarter me was Nangwarry 30 Mt Burr 45.

Mt Burr took off Payne and bought Ella Easterby back on to WA. Again Nangwarry stepped off the pedal this quarter fitness really coming into it, somemes making a few poor passing choices. Although they connued to really push themselves they struggled to drive down out of defence. Schultz dominated this quarter with her great drive and passing. Biszko really worked hard in goals with Hoffmeister, but Thiele really read the ball well taking many intercepts this quarter and driving well out of defence. Final score Nangwarry 39 Mt Burr 63.

Demon's Kate Faint and Glencoe's Donna Jaeschke had a ght tussle running the centre posion. Glencoe up by 4 at quarter me.

The second quarter was a ght, seesawing affair. Port Mac switched Alana Berkefeld back to GK to try to curb the influence of Cocks, moving Alysha Coon out to GD. Coon provided good drive down the court, and while Berkefeld got her hands to many balls, Cocks sll had another great quarter shoong 10. Glencoe won the quarter by just 1 to take a 5 goal lead into half me.

The third quarter was again ght, a few errors crept into both teams, some wayward passing and some missed goals. Experienced Demon Michelle Moore at WA was having a great contest with Glencoe's Chloe Pfitzner, neither player giving an inch. Alice Tentye provided great drive at WA for the Murphies, with the speedy Liza Mutch hot on her tail. Glencoe up by 6 at three quarter me.

The final quarter saw the Demons switch

Faint and Mutch, and Megan Hein and Kori Collins. This seemed to have a posive effect, but Sarah Edwards and Chelsea Owen kept working hard in defence for the Murphies, making Hein and Collins earn every goal.
