Here we go again, what a year 2015 has been! There was so much taking place this year that we loved and some things we didn’t love so much. Kendrick Lamar gave us arguably one of the best albums of the year, Adele came back with a bang, Viola Davis made history - it was quite a year in fashion, pop culture, fashion and more.

As many of you know, September marked our 6 year anniversary. This year, as many of you realized - I did not release an issue to celebrate as planned.

Many of you reached out to me from all over the world and as always I believe in transparency with my audience. At times, transparency is challenging for me you all know I’m a notoriously private person.

What I will share with you is back in September on my birthday my father’s health took a turn. Taking time to focus in on family became the priority, sadly and completely devastating in November I lost my father.

His favorite issue was the January 2011 issue when we celebrated the 50th anniversary of The Temptations with an interview featuring Otis Williams. Mr. Williams did something special for my daddy knowing my daddy was a superfan. I’ll always appreciate how this magazine gave my daddy and I even more to bond over. We were extremely close, spoke every single day - I’m forever a daddy’s girl.

It has been a tremendous loss, I thank those of you were aware and ask you continue to keep my family in your prayers.

Throughout those ten weeks, while extremely devastating I was still working to deliver everything you expect of Xposure. With a few changes, I’m happy to give you a newly redesigned website (xposure365.com) and layout starting with this issue. I love the new look, you know I’m looking forward to your feedback! Those things are definitely worth celebrating right?

This issue we celebrate only the best of 2015 while looking forward to all 2016 has in store. This issue also features 3 people who each had a hand it making 2015 a great year for myself and Xposure. There’s so

much I can say about our cover feature Santos Garcia - who worked his way up from being on a street team at Def Jam to becoming one of the entertainment industry’s rising power players. His story is why I selected him for the cover, he shared a lot of lessons he’s learned on his journey and gives great advice for entrepreneurs . The mission has always been and will continue to be to inspire, encourage and dare you to live the best life you possibly can.

Allynn shares with us her journey of becoming a life coach, tips for managing stress and more. Andre Garlic is an actor, model, philanthropist who has started The Zeal Foundation which offers mentorship, therapy and more serving underprivileged communities.

Taking a look back at our favorite Spring 2016 collections from New York Fashion Week, we also give a sneak peek at some of our favorite Pre-Fall 2016 collections. We are definitely looking forward to seeing the upcoming shows and giving you unique access as always for New York, London, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks. Ava Duvernay Barbie - The doll featuring the likeness of “Selma” director DuVernay, the first African-American woman to direct a movie nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, is part of a “Sheroes” line announced by the toymaker in April. The plan was to create a single copy of each “Shero” Barbie, which the real-life woman being honored could auction off for a charity of their choice. After a huge demand, Mattel mass produced the doll which sold out in minutes. Duvernay and Mattel donated all the proceeds to Color of Change.

Zendaya Barbie - Zendaya definitely showed the world how to turn a negative situation into a positive, impactful, moment this year. After getting less than tactful criticism from Fashion Police, Zendaya and Mattel partnered together to release a Barbie in the look that garnered all the controversy. Zendaya was excited about her doll “When I was little I couldn’t find a Barbie that looked like me, my… how times have changed. Thank you Barbie for this honor and for allowing me to be apart of your diversification and expansion of the definition of beauty.”

Viola Davis historic Emmy win - This year, Viola Davis just became the first black actress to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama at the 67th annual Emmy Awards. Davis took the moment to address Hollywood’s battle of diversity in casting, production and more by saying “Let me tell you something: the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity, you cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.” This historic win is definitely one of our favorites of 2015.

Sinatra 100 - This year, The Recording Academy partnered with The Sinatra Family and Frank Sinatra Enterprises to announce some of the major initiatives confirmed as part of this year’s Sinatra 100 centennial celebration honoring one of the most cherished entertainment legends of all time, Frank Sinatra. Throughout 2015, the 100th anniversary of Sinatra’s birth (December 12, 1915) was commemorated around the world with a new stage show, prestigious exhibitions, music, video and book releases, special partnerships, major television and film events along with a host of independent tributes and concerts.

Throughout his six-decade career, Frank Sinatra performed on more than 1,400 recordings and was awarded 31 gold, nine platinum, three double platinum and one triple platinum album by the Recording Industry Association of America. Sinatra demonstrated a remarkable ability to appeal to every generation and continues to do so; his artistry still influences many of today’s music superstars. He also appeared in more than 60 films and produced eight motion pictures. “May you all live to be 100 years old and may the last voice you hear be mine!” – Frank Sinatra

Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy Nominations - 2015 was a great year for music, Kendrick Lamar released arguably one of the best albums of 2015. The Recording Academy happened to agree and gave To Pimp A Butterfly 11 nominations. TPAB helped continued the dialogue on racial injustice we all have been witnessing, reintroduced jazz influence into hip hop music and even led David Bowie to credit Kendrick’s album for inspiring the sounds on his new album.

Frank Ocean (Boys Don’t Cry) - Frank Ocean has really been playing with our emotions with the follow up to Channel Orange and it’s getting out of hand. (Even Adele has said she is waiting) There was hope Boys Don’t Cry would be released last year, amid all speculation nothing materialized (was the rumor true that the album was scrapped)? Some remain hopeful there will be an album as various shots of the singer have been posted showing him in studio. The waiting game continues……...

Drake (Views From The 6) - Drake has done a great job keeping us entertained while waiting on Views From The 6. There’s been lots of speculation on features (we like the idea of a collab with Beyonce), the actually release date (1.6.16.) has come and gone. Snippets with Rihanna were leaked, then swiftly removed.

Drake recently gave the update that the album would be released “in the near future.” We’re hoping sooner than later.

MOST ANTICIPATED MUSIC EVENT Guns N Roses Reunite at Coachella, the reunion music fans never thought would happen, was just confirmed by Slash himself. For decades, GNR fans like us have been hoping the band could reunite for one live performance. Our wish has been granted twice thanks to the team at Coachella. Tickets are on sale (pretty close to sold out) for both dates. So much anticipation, it's hands down the top musical moment we’re looking forward to of 2016.

David Bowie (Blackstar) - Set for release on his 69th birthday, Bowie gives us his 25th studio album Blackstar.

Tony Visconti, Bowie's longtime producer spoke about influences for the album "We were listening to a lot of Kendrick Lamar, we wound up with nothing like that, but we loved the fact Kendrick was so open-minded and he didn't do a straight-up hip-hop record. He threw everything on there, and that's exactly what we wanted to do. The goal, in many, many ways, was to avoid rock & roll."

Sia (This Is Acting) - Sia is all set to give us the new music we’ve been waiting to hear and we’re here for it!

At press time, Sia just released her full length collab with Kanye West called Reaper (which Rihanna passed on).

This Is Acting, set to release on 1/29 is being reported as an album filled with songs that were scrapped by other artists. Alive and Reaper our favorites so far. 1.29 can’t get here fast enough!

Missy Elliott (Untitled) - We’ve been pleading with Missy to take all our money in exchange for a new album for years. We became even more insistent after her Superbowl appearance with Katy Perry. Late last year, WTF (Where They From) was released featuring Pharrell and once the visual was released, we had a complete fangirl moment that is still going strong. Although there has been no release date, nor title yet - it does not change our anticipation for Missy’s new music.

THE NICE GUYS STARRING RYAN GOSLING & RUSSELL CROWE Synopsis: In 1970s Los Angeles, a down-on-his-luck private eye (Ryan Gosling) and his tough partner (Russell Crowe) investigate the disappearance of a girl and the death of a porn star.

Cast: Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Margaret Qualley, Kim Basinger, Matt Bomer Why We’re Obsessed: We were excited at the thought of Crowe and Gosling teaming up in a film, even without knowing the plot. Now that we’ve seen the Red Band trailer, we’re definitely all in. Set in the 1970s, Crowe (the hired muscle) teams up with Gosling (quirky private eye) to find a missing girl. Gosling plays the lighter, funnier role to Crowe’s straight hard nosed, no nonsense guy. Will they all make it out alive or will the conspiracy they uncover leave everyone missing?

Release Date: May 20

SUICIDE SQUAD Synopsis: A group of dangerous super villains find themselves summoned by the U.S. government to fight under the banner of Task Force X, or the Suicide Squad.

Cast: Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis Why We’re Obsessed: There are typical reasons to get hype about Suicide Squad (as any comic lover would and should). Ever since David Ayers introduced the trailer at ComiCon last year, the excitement has reached a fever pitch. While everyone was losing their $h!t over Jared Leto’s reveal as the The Joker - our excitement was vastly different.

Our obsession is not the typical reason (even though we admittedly lost it when Leto was revealed) - we’re hype about the female characters featured in this film. Margot Robbie being cast to play Harley Quinn was an excellent choice, what has us even more hype is that Harley is finally getting the shine she deserved long ago. What really has us obsessed is Viola Davis as the ultimate HBIC Amanda Waller! Sure, we can go on and on about how sexy Will Smith looks as Deadshot or how creepily and scarily attractive Leto is as the Joker - see for yourself this Summer.

MOONLIGHT Synopsis: A young man comes of age in "War on Drugs"-era Miami, and struggles with a deteriorating home situation as well as his own sexual awakening.

Cast: Naomie Harris, André Holland, Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monáe, Trevante Rhodes Why We’re Obsessed: It’s structured in three different time periods as Chiron battles a deteriorating home life and deals with his dawning sexuality. So much talent within this ensemble, we’re especially excited to see Janelle Monae’s debut as an actress and how her character fits into the story.

Release Date: Fall 2016 THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Synopsis: A Mexican village is at the mercy of Calvera, the leader of a band of outlaws. The townspeople, too afraid to fight for themselves, hire seven American gunslingers to free them from the bandits' raids. The professional gunmen train the villagers to defend themselves, then plan a trap for the evil Calvera.

Cast: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Haley Bennett, Vincent D'Onofrio, Ethan Hawke, Cam Gigandet, Peter Sarsgaard, Byung-hun Lee, Martin Sensmeier, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo Why We’re Obsessed: The ensemble for this cast is nothing short of intriguing, especially knowing this is a remake of the 1960 classic. Antoine Fuqua is on board to direct (we know he can get a hell of a performance out of Denzel and Ethan like in Training Day). This will also feature the late James Horner's last score — to everyone's surprise he had completed it ahead of schedule, just before his death.

THE FOUNDER Synopsis: Story of the founder of McDonalds, Ray Kroc.

Cast: Michael Keaton, Patrick Wilson, Linda Cardinelli, Laura Dern, Nick Offerman Why We’re Obsessed: Michael Keaton has been having a hell of a run the last couple of years and this portrayal of Ray Kroc (founder of McDonald’s) will surely have everyone abuzz with Oscar fever. This is, a biopic for the ages of the man who founded arguably the most recognizable brand in the 20th century and beyond. Despite cultivating a place of happiness, this film takes a look at the darker side of the man and the various challenges he faced, created and managed. Sounds very Academy friendly right? Find out when the film opens later this year.

GWEN STEFANI X URBAN DECAY After working on the collaboration for close to a year, Stefani created shades that she felt were missing in her personal arsenal. PAT MCGRATH’S NEW MAKEUP LINE The celebrity make up legend has all of us on edge with excitement. Back in October, her limited edition Gold001 level pigment sold out in mere minutes. Plans for the line have been kept under wraps, there is word of a full line. Our wish list would be lips, eyes, cheeks, eyebrows and skin care. SEPHORA PLAY GIVE US MORE TO GUSH OVER So far, Sephora's coveted $10 monthly subscription box, Play!, is available by invitation only, and is in "limited market release," aka only in a few cities. The store recently announced plans to expand the service nationwide in 2016, with a possible Canadian release to follow.

Selena X MAC After a Change.org petition garnered more than 37,000 signatures, MAC agreed to design a line to honor the late "Dreaming of You" singer. Selena's sister, Suzette Quintanilla, even had a hand in creating the line.

Art Hearts Fashion Founder and Designer Erik Rosete opened the show with his Mister Triple X "Vortex" collection. This season Mister Triple X debuted a flirtatious metallic pallet featuring rich body-con dresses, shorts and the designer's signature bunny ears. Zachary/Nathaniel was next to the runway presenting an inspired collection of dark hues, plunging necklines and leather features. Expert draping made for flattering silhouettes in the designs, expertly pair with sheer and leather. Tarek Sinno's rich color scheme of blues, reds and golds accentuated the feminine form with fanciful ornate detailing and unexpected structured features. Striking lines and intricate jeweling elicited excitement from guests and media. Designer Gregorio Sanchez enlivened the runway with bright pops of color and fine hand embroidery. OSCAR DE LA RENTA Peter Copping has had large shoes to fill since the death of Oscar De La Renta, with the Spring 2016 collection being amazing - our hopes were high for Pre Fall 2016.

Exceeding even the highest expectations, Copping’s Pre Fall collection blew us away. Our favorite piece is the gorgeous, strapless yellow column dress paired with black gloves. Copping said of the collection “I wanted the collection to look like a patchwork, a rich mix, because that’s what I find America to be.” He also stated he drew inspiration from Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, and Grace Kelly when you have inspiration like that how can you go wrong? CHRISTIAN SIRIANO With Bianca Jagger as his much for this collection, there’s no shortage of old school glamour in Christian Siriano’s latest collection. Seventies glamour comes to mind looking at the hats that compliment the tailored pantsuits. The standout look is a pink gown with dramatic sleeves which definitely gives hollywood glamour. This collection is one of our favorite collections of the season so far.

CHANEL Chanel is always a staple in our fashion coverage and this collection is no exception. Karl keeps finding ways to keep collections fresh, innovative, edgy and gives us more than enough looks to inspire our own looks throughout the season. This collection featured 80 plus looks including iconic staples such as the tweed skirt set (as always) and more. One of our favorite pieces is the black, leather pencil skirt (a staple for all of us) which was paired with multiple tops throughout the collection. Luxurious dusters, coats, moto jackets and sweaters, were also among our favorites especially the tweed gray and white jacket with black belt paired with the black pencil skirt. This is only a small look at what we loved about this collection, definitely looking forward to the Fall collection

HERVE LEGER BY MAX AZRIA There is not a collection we look forward to more than that of Herve Leger. There are certain iconic pieces you know to expect from the designer like the bandage dresses, conversely you still expect the unexpected. Out of the 27 looks from this collection, there were a few surprises like the green tailored pantsuit for instance. We love the green jacket paired with the dress, giving us lots of ideas of how to rock a look perfectly as only Azria can.

Bugatti has partnered with Palmer Johnson to produce a set of carbon fiber sports yachts that will consist of Bugatti’s design inspiration along with ultra-premium materials.

American Airlines ADDS PREMIUM ECONOMY SEATS

American Airlines announced starting next year, they will debut a new section of seats on international flights -Premium Economy. The new class will feature wider seats with extending footrests, and will be located between business class and the more economical main cabin.

The reclining seats will be made of leather and will also have bigger entertainment screens for passengers.

Passengers traveling in Premium Economy will get priority check-in and boarding and will be able to check two bags for free. They will also receive a improved meal service, Wi-Fi access, noise-reducing headphones and amenity kits.

RITZ PARIS GRAND REOPENING The Ritz Paris grand reopening - After four year multi million dollar renovation, the iconic Ritz Paris will reopen in March with new suites, a new restaurant, and new spa area dedicated to Chanel featuring Chanel products for services. Suites have been updated to include private, shaded terraces overlooking the lush gardens. Leaving no single detail left overlooked, all bathrooms will feature heated floors along with a separate tub and shower. The Ritz Club has been updated with a state-of-the-art fitness facility, and sauna. 2016 McLaren 650 S Can Am McLaren will only make 50 of the cars, and each will cost $334,500. But that will get you much more than a lightweight set of wheels with a roof. Carbon fiber louvered front wings improve handling; a new polished quad-pipe stainless steel exhaust system serves two purposes.

It visually ties the car in with the McLaren Can-Am race car of 1960s, and improves the noise of the 641-horsepower, 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8. With its shout-y new exhaust, the 650S Can-Am will spit a crackle to 62 mph from a standstill in 3 seconds flat on the way to its 204 mph top speed.

BENTLEY EXP 10 SPEED CONCEPT

Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept - CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer confirmed that Bentley is pursuing a production version of its show-stopping EXP 10 Speed 6 sports car concept unveiled at the Geneva auto show in March.

Instead of relying purely on internal combustion (or a hybrid setup, as was mooted for the show car), Bentley intends to turn the EXP 10 into its first production electric car. “We think this could push luxury and then sports car business to a new direction, and could be again groundbreaking for Bentley Motors.” He went on to caution, “[That] doesn’t mean that the car will not come additionally with a combustion engine at a later stage, but we are planning to do EXP-10 Speed 6 pure electric at present.” With rivals Aston Martin publicly committing to developing an electric version of its Rapide sedan, and corporate-cousin Porsche with its Mission E electric sedan we’re looking forward to seeing what each luxury brand will offer.

Porsche Misson E - Porsche has announced the concept Mission E will go into production. A production-based Mission E will be the first electric vehicle branded under the Porsche brand. Porsche is indeed on a mission to outdo Tesla, which still builds the industry’s only high-performance pure electric vehicle. It's highly likely the car could boast 600 horsepower, a zero-to-62-mph time of less than 3.5 seconds, four-wheel steering, allwheel drive, and more. A life coach is someone who can help encourage & offer support for someone who is ready to make life changes & would like to be pro active about it.

Many times we can find ourselves wanting to make changes like, find our life purpose, or

wanting to explore new paths, but may not know where to begin. The coach is there to inspire, motivate, encourage & help create strategies & new possibilities to add to the client's life.

What inspired you to start A Sip of Positivitea?

When I first graduated from Hampton University, I began a text list that started with only 5 people.

As time went by, it grew tremendously & I decided to start social media pages naming them "Sip Of

Positivitea." After getting certified to life coach, I decided I wanted to use this creative & catchy name as my business name.

As a life coach, what are the most common issues you assist your clients with?

The most common would be, people just really wanting to be heard without judgement & criticism. Many of us have our friends that we vent or talk to, but we know they typically give us "their" opinions from a "what would I would do" type stand point. Life coaches don't give you opinions we actually help the client discover their true answer through themselves. Besides, who knows us better than our own self, right?

Lol. What other services do you offer to your clients?

On top of me being a certified life coach, I'm also certified for career coaching. This is where my clients can come in and try to align their life purpose with their work. I'm also currently in the process of becoming certified to teach a course called the "Creative Insight Journey."

The course came from Stanford University's, business masters program designed by Dr. Michael Ray! There's only 1200 people certified in the world to teach this course & I'm currently the only one in Atlanta to be certified. The course is based on helping you deal with creative ideas or life transistions & touches on how to replace judgement, expectations, time & stress management, plus many more. It's an 8 week course for groups & 10 week course for one on ones! We all look for ways to cope with daily stress.

What tips or advice would you offer our readers on how to manage?

The first step is to get clear about what's stressing you out. You can get clear about what's going on in your life that's causing the stress by journaling at least 5 minutes a day & meditating 10 minutes or more a day. It's scientifically proven that both can lower stress levels.

What's next for you as a life coach and your company and how can we keep up with the great work you're doing?

I have a lot I have coming up. I've always been the one to not mention anything I have going on until it's complete, so stay tuned. You're such a renaissance man, what inspired you to become an actor?

Haha Renaissance man? I don't know about all that but from a young age I've always been a movie nut. Coming up, watching movies was how my family and friends all bonded. Still to this day movies bring us together and just spark great conversation. Through movies just like in life, we laugh, cry and argue together. I've always loved story telling and entertaining. My mother was the person to suggest acting and said so to me at a young age. So as soon as I began my training (several years later) and really learning the art, I fell in love.

What are your favorite and least favorite things about being an actor in the industry where diversity in casting is such a huge issue?

My least favorite thing about being an actor in the industry is actually in your question. "Diversity in casting is such a huge issue". In 2015 this shouldn't be an issue you know. If you look at the music industry, hip hop culture is probably the most mimicked and emulated culture across the world.

When you look at hip hop culture, what faces do you see?

What excites me is that even though it's been delayed, these opportunities are coming. With actors such as a Michael B. Jordan playing "traditionally white roles" smashing the box office, producers like Will Packer killing it with predominantly ethnic cast, and of course you have Shonda Rhimes writing very successfully with several hues of skin on your TV screen, great things are happening.

You recently announced the launch of the Zeal Foundation, can you tell us more about it and what inspired it?

So my mother Lauren Pitts, is the genius behind the Zeal Foundation. Our goal is to educate youth and a families for improved lives. Through education, mentorship, and therapy we will help many of the underprivileged achieve more in life.

We seek to help those who have not been taught to help themselves, the right way. Coming from a very small area (Salem, NJ), we witnessed how so many, our family included, fall victim to complacency and self pity, turn to violence, drugs, dropping out of school, having multiple children with no job to support them so many things that maybe if the individual had one person to talk to or to learn from, they could have taken another path. I had the pleasure of meeting Santos Garcia in Beverly Hills while celebrating the launch of his and Renaldo Vines new company The 82 Group. After a few conversations and great advice, I thought sharing his journey from street team member to executive was extremely inspiring. I asked him to share his experiences to motivate and inspire others.

The conversation ran well over an hour, it’s one of the most in depth interviews we’ve completed. We spoke about success, balance, finding your passion and going after your dreams. Here’s our conversation.

What was the definitive moment when you knew you could have a career in the music industry?

I got an opportunity to work at Def Jam Streets. This is back when 112 had the Hot & Wet album.

Ludacris had the Chicken-n-Beer album, and a friend of ours named was actually running the Street Team Department at Def Jam. Now back then when we started, there wasn’t no digital market - nothing. There was no social media, I think Myspace barely had just started. Back then, it was all gorilla marketing which means everything was flyers, poster boards and t-shirts, little towels, things like that. That was the era that we were in. So they hired us, which was the Street Team and we went out there and we hit the streets, put up flyers and posters and stuff like that.

That’s how it originally started and it all was about me getting inside the door at Def Jam to just kind of meet people and shake hands and talk to people, that was the essence of it.

So you were the guy outside the club with a flyer saying, “Hey, we’re having this kind of event coming up. Make sure you come out,” or “this is a new album that’s getting ready to come out. Check it out,” or whatever. That was you?

Yes, I was that annoying little kid waiting for you outside the club when you were coming out the club drunk.

Wow! You’re drunk not worried about anything I was saying but just for some way, somehow I felt that I could convince you to buy an album or look something up.

That was definitely me outside the club. It was an interesting time because I really got opportunity to just kind of look and be part of like the marketing strategy.

There’s a whole production happening when it comes to promoting artists, just Love is something you love getting the word out there about something. Keep in mind that back then there good, the bad, the ugly. You k wasn’t no social media like it is now. So if you really wanted to put something out there, I mean you really had to you know, you had your 106 & Park. You had your know you’re part of it that w opportunity for me to d TRL’s. You had those looks on TV but if you wanted to directly hit the consumer, you had to like have that onsite promotional team you know in the streets. Giving out flyers and talking about you and starting a wave you know. Now it’s – now we live in an era where you know by the click of a button. Thousands of people can know about you, know your release and you know what’s going on. That’s why you have artists like Beyonce that can release an album overnight, and millions of people will know about it - because she’s just so powerful and her brand is so powerful that you can do that.

At the time you were in a rap group, what happened to the group?

So eventually, we just grew into different interests, had different interests. I totally understood that the older you get, you need some type of cash flow. I was about to actually make a transition myself, I got an opportunity by the name of a gentleman named Tishawn Gayle which is actually one of Ne-Yo’s managers. He came to me and he was like, “Hey, listen, you know we’ve got a new project.” This is when Jay had just became President. L.A. Reid had just came to the office and to be a partner, and they had just signed Rihanna and Ne-Yo and Teairra Mari.

So this was a big deal because this was like three of the new artists they just signed. So it was a big, big, big, big deal for them to actually get this off the ground because you know this was the first artist that they you know, this was like a show and tell.

Tishawn came to me and Tishawn actually was doing marketing at Def Jam prior to managing Ne-Yo, he knew a little bit about me just being around the office and putting in work. So he came to me like, “Hey, listen, we just starting a new project. Would you like to go on the road with us and actually do what you do in New York for all these artists, for us?” Being a kid fresh out of high school, I was like, “Sure, like why not?” You know NeYo was just kind of like traveling and stuff like that. I took the opportunity and then we went on the road. My responsibility was mainly to – for Street Team members to get to the actual location and actually give out flyers, put up poster boards and basically make the spot look like a Ne-Yo event all day, the only thing that what it was, it wasn’t a Ne-Yo event. We were on tour with John Legend.

So you’re on the road with Ne-Yo. You’re doing your marketing, your promotions, your brand strategy, brand management and what’s the next step after that?

So I went on the road with Ne-Yo and you know at the time, it was only myself and manager, Tango, Reynell Hay, “Tango” and then Tishawn Gayle, and security. The record just started picking up, So Sick went to a whole other level. [laughter] So have you always had an interest in marketing and promotion, or was that just something that just happened by chance?

I think a little bit of both. I think initially, music is a very powerful thing, and I’ve always been amazed at how music can just travel, you know just the message. It’s so easy for people to understand a message to the music, and feel the same way through music. I guess being part of of getting that music out there, I’ve always been excited about it. I’ve always been curious about it. So when doing this, when you love music, when you love something you just don’t do it to a certain extent. You have – I feel like when you love something, anything in life, you kind of like try to figure everything about it you know. You try and that’s where you enhance it that way.

I think in life that – when you love something, you just don’t pick one particular thing about it. the

it all the way around, know you just invest and you way. With music, it’s just an do something amazing.

Love is something you love it all the way around, the good, the bad, the ugly. You know you just invest and you know you’re part of it that way. With music, it’s just an opportunity for me to do something amazing. So I think that was part of it that kept me going and it led to other things.

Now we’re on the road and the record started going going great, so obviously, more responsibility started coming our way. So Sick had picked up a lot of traction, a lot of interest. People were loving it. People were jamming it and then the tour came. So it was – I think it was Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and the guys called the Dem Franchize Boyz, Juelz Santana. So they went on this tour called Up Close and Personal Tour, and this was like the first tour that Ne-Yo and Chris Brown ever did together and they did at the Amphitheater. So I got on that on tour for that. We were gone for maybe like four months and now I was doing marketing on the road, and then we were actually doing like meet and greets, there were other little things I did here and there just because it was you know at this point, it was just like a family. It was like whatever needed to get done to actually move the ball forward, it was just like let’s get it done. It was no room to say oh, that’s not what I’m doing. Everyone just kind of did a little bit of 51

Over the years, Ne-Yo started Compound Entertainment, obviously, you were promoted and you worked your way up. So what is your position now with Compound?

Because I knew the road so well, I had a partner named Daryl who moved on to other things. I was given the position to be the road manager. I kind of already had an understanding of just how to work the road because I’ve been on it for so long. I was the road manager for roughly about six, seven years that I managing Ne-Yo and then after that, I got off the road and I started doing A&R. So right now I do A&R consulting for Compound and I have some producers that I work with, and I submit tracks to them. We go back and forth to create the best product.

We put music together for Ne-Yo’s album, other artists’ albums and currently working on some music right now for Empire.

You’re the A&R, I know you also consult companies on branding and marketing strategy as well. Now you’ve started the 82 Group. So for those who don’t know, tell us about the 82 Group.

Right, so the 82 Group, I started the 82 Group with my good friend, Renaldo Vines. Renaldo worked for the PR company that actually was handling Ne-Yo’s PR for a very long time, and he was also a good friend of mine and we always talked business. We just sat down and during the transition of me being a road manager to A&R. I would be in the city a lot, and we figured since Renaldo has a great understanding of PR as well as marketing and I have my understanding of marketing management, we could come together. We wanted to create a company that would manage not just artists, DJ’s, actors, singers and other brands too. One thing that I realize in this business which is a very – a key, essential thing right now in music, is that these brands want to be associated with our culture. There has to be a middle man there or a woman to actually put that together, to actually bring these major corporations and do major branding together in contact with these artists.

You know you might have an artist like people that might not even know about let’s say, Kehlani or a DJ that’s actually moving right now, that’s attracting a certain amount of crowd. You put them in contact with a headphone company, Karen Civil’s a good example of that. She’s managed to master that and then these brands actually want to work with these clients, these artists and these musicians actually can get the word out. They have the cool factor is what I like to call it you and if you see a DJ or an artist actually wearing this brand, you know people will follow that trend too. So I’d like to go into brand marketing, too because I think that there’s a lot of opportunity in that.

What is the most – the major thing that you feel people overlook when it comes to branding and their brand strategy?

I think that initially, because we – sometimes people look too deep into things – they try to actually force a brand to be associated with something. Brand marketing is the simplest thing. You look at your client or whatever you’re dealing with, whatever the situation is and you think about what kind of brands would be good for that. Don’t try to kind of like create something that’s not going to happen organically. You got an athlete, why would you do something that has to do with candles? Like it doesn’t really make sense. You know like you’re trying to force it.

It’s not happening.

That’s true. Well, they may use it to relax in the bathtub. [laughs] I know but you see how far-fetched that is. Why not think of a sneaker?

I was trying to make it work but I understand what you mean. [laughs] I think that’s like one key essential. You don’t want to get too far off. That’s definitely one thing. It’s really by definition. Another thing when it comes to branding is consistency. Once you have a strategy, play to play.

Take care and see what it is. You have the blueprint and follow through on it. Sometimes people are not always going to bite at something right away, but if it makes sense it’ll come around. It’s been plenty of times where labels release a single, and you know firsthand there’s been songs of Ne-Yo that came out and people automatically didn’t 52 XPOSURE MAGAZINE www.xposure365.com

gravitate to it. Because it’s been out or because the label was working it, people started to pick up with it you know, pick up to it. When it comes to marketing, good stuff is good stuff.

This is so random but I’m going to tell you this because I know you’ll appreciate this. I’m listening to you speak, I’m thinking about Ne-Yo and the marketing campaigns I’ve seen him be involved with. I think my favorite campaign was Overstock.com and the single was Closer, I love that video and I was like look at Ne-Yo dancing in the Overstock.com commercial. [laughter] I know that was random but as you’re talking, I remembered that Overstock.com campaign. [laughs] Oh, yeah, no, you’d be surprised - when you really think about it, no one came out with a record like Closer back when Ne-Yo came out with that record. If you really think about it, Ne-Yo had R&B vocals, right, but with a pop beat. Like how you do get that? Like no one was really doing that. People were either doing R&B or they were just doing pop.

True.

The way he mashed it, it was like something unreal and that record absolutely took us all over the world because you know he bridged that gap, and I think Chris actually released another song like that also that was kind of that same kind of tempo but if you really think about it, no one was really doing it like that. You know he’s actually one of the first guys who actually, if not the first guy, that started that trend you know. Now you hear it all the time and – Right.

You know back then, you know DJ’s weren’t a big deal back then you know. Like you weren’t you had your DJ’s in America and you had your DJ’s overseas, but Ne-Yo actually you know, the music that he created allowed DJ’s to play their music out there and then you know DJ’s started traveling here. He’s not even thinking about being influential in that sector, and he probably will never you know say it but I’m going to say it for him. [laughter] And that’s why you’re in the position you’re in. So with the A&R, you’re working with producers and you’re working on the Empire soundtrack hen that opportunity came to you and what that opportunity means.

I could tell you that I am super excited for Ne-Yo to be working on the music side of it because I feel like he’s an artist. He’s a musician, he understands how to write music. Not to say that whoever else was working it, that they didn’t know but I’m saying I know that Ne-Yo understands what it takes to create great records. I’m excited for him, I know that he’s going to give them a hundred and ten thousand percent when it comes to it. On top of the fact that he’s got some great producers. He’s got producers working on some music, he has his guys in L.A. I’ve got some guys out here in New York working on some good music.

I like to always look for new talent, I’m always looking for new talent. I’m never the type of guy who wants to just stick to a certain type of music, or just deal with certain producers. I’m always listening to new music – and that’s what I also like about Ne-Yo because he’s never afraid to listen to music. It’s that one producer that you didn’t think that was going to do anything, that might be the reason why you have that number one single or that number one record in the charts. It could be that guy on the train or walking down the street you know.

So are you doing an open call for submissions or how does that really work? Because most of the people I interview, don’t want people flooding them with things.

No, no, no, no, no, no, I – no, I – listen. Surprisingly, when I go to talent shows or when I go to seminars or conventions, people are always upset with me because I always give them my number and I always give them my email. If someone was to hit me on social media, on Instagram you know and they shoot me a message, I’ll listen to it. I’ll be like send it to my email. If someone sends it to my email address, – the way I look at like this, if someone can get to me, then there shouldn’t be no reason why I shouldn’t give them an email or numbers to contact you know.

That’s interesting.

That’s the way I look at it you know. If you can get to me, you know if you’re reading this email, listening to this email, you get this interview and can get to me and say, “Hey, Santos, you know I read your interview.” You know if you can get to me and say something like that and refer to this interview, then obviously you know okay, cool.

Send me some music. You know the reason why, why not? They could be the next big thing.

Okay, so tell me about the artists that you’re working with on the 82 Group side and on the Compound side.

So right now, 82, the 82 Group has three. I have two artists and one DJ and let me tell you about the first one. Her name is Re’ Lxuise.

I love her.

I love her. [laughs] She is amazing. Thank you for loving her because we love her, too. She is amazing, she has so much talent.

Renaldo brought her to my attention and this was one of the situations where he just paid me a visit. We were just at the office just listening to her music and her voice for hours and it was nothing left to be done but to just sign her. Like it was really that simple. Anyone that has heard her sing knows that her vocals are incredible, out of this world. She’s the type of singer you can just put in the studio, she tells the engineer how she wants everything done.

She’s just amazing like that. The second artist we have is Darnell King. Darnell King is from Brooklyn, New York.

He’s a producer, writer, engineer, and he’s working with a lot of people in the music business. He’s the type of artist that you just put in the studio by himself and he can just create a whole album. Literally, lock him in the studio, don’t let him out. He’ll make the beat. He’ll engineer it. He’ll mix it, master it. He’ll have it ready for you, amazing, amazing artist. I think that when it comes to rap, you have to have something that separates you a little bit from the rest.

Our last client is DJ Quiana Parks. Quiana is – as well as she’s an artist, she’s a painter and she’s a cancer survivor which her story is incredible to me. Through everything that she’s been through in her life, she continues to fight, and become a better person. She’s amazing. She’s just not by the way, one of those DJ’s that plugs the phone up and just plays music. [laughs] No, she actually – [laughter] She actually knows how to DJ. She can give you the House music, can give you the Old School. She can play at your weddings, she can play anything. She’s really dope and that’s the reason we signed her to 82 Group just to continue building her up.. That’s with 82 and the Compound, the Compound is right now – I work with everybody but right now my focus is working with a producer group called The Vamp out of New York City. The Vamp and those guys are good friends of mine – I knew they played good music. Randomly one day, some of their music to Ne-Yo and Ne-Yo was like - he loved it. Now we’re just working on Empire which is a really good opportunity to grow those guys. They deserve it. They’re really, really dope musicians. So that’s kind of my focus right now, as well as like we were talking earlier, consulting for different brands that I want to be part of the culture.

What do you look for in clients, and are you taking on new clients for a brand strategy and brand management?

Definitely. I’m always taking on new clients but I like to go back to what I was saying earlier about it. You make it makes sense. What is the demographic that you’re trying to reach, the audience and the age demographic? What are you trying to do? Where do you see your brand going in the next five years? It has to make sense. Everything that I’m a part of, I’m very passionate about. I go a hundred and ten percent and I don’t really want to do anything short-term. I always want to be part of the situations where we’re going to take a brand and we’re going to take you. I’m going to partner you with a client and this is going to turn into something huge. Look at the way Dr. Dre and Beats Headphones - that turned into something amazing. Now they’re going to start supplying music through a certain service. Think about Facebook and now, they opened up the world to communicating. Now it’s like Facebook is the way to communicate, and that’s the type of brand partnerships that I want to work with.

How can we partner and make this thing where we can evolve the culture? How can we make this the biggest thing for the world?

Whether it’s communication, whether it’s fashion, whether it’s enlightenment, whether it’s health and religion. Whatever it is how can we make this big so that we can get the word out there and as big as possible?

That’s pretty dope. So what has been the most valuable lesson that you would like to share that you’ve learned along the way?

What would you tell yourself ten years ago in order to get to where you are now?

Because I started in the business at a really early age, I’m still learning how to become a better man. Being a young Black man during this time, you go through so many ups and downs. You’re on a roll, you’re traveling ,away from your family. Sometimes you’re back home in the neighborhood, with so many different emotions.

If I would be able to tell myself something, it would just be to just understand that you’re going to have good days and you’re going to have bad days. Tough times don’t last, tough people do. Mike said it best - You know just you have to continue fighting every single day. Wake up every day, see it as an opportunity for you to get something done, to become a better person. Whether you actually want to work out, read a book, you want to go out to lunch with a friend, set up a meeting, whether you want to try to hit up that person that you tried to hit up every single day. Hit him up again.

Young people in this business get discouraged but people in general they don’t follow their dreams because they might hit a speed bump or a dead end it’s okay. Get back up and you continue to strive for your greatness.

Everyday is a new day and I would just continue to tell myself to believe in that.

I’ve had some bad days and I’ve had some amazing days. Now that I’m a little bit older,because I understand that now - I feel like my career’s moving a little bit much more faster. It’s going in a better, positive direction because I understand that now and then I think that’s good, key advice that I want to share. That was awesome.

What a compliment, thank you Santos. Earlier this year you launched The 82 Group with an awards brunch & scholarship benefit in Beverly Hills. Give me some insight into what your mindset and feelings were before, during and after the event.

Well, first off, I want to just say thank you. It was an honor to have you come to the event.

Thank you. Thank you for coming by and you know being part of the 82 experience. I definitely – I know me and Renaldo definitely appreciate you and everybody that came to the event. So I definitely want to say thank you to you – For me, it actually really didn’t sink in, what we had accomplished until maybe you know later on. Maybe the next morning, after we took care of everything. It was a sense of - it was unreal. That was actually one of the first times that I got a chance to thank Ne-Yo publicly for everything he’s done for me in my career. It was a big deal because you can say thank you to someone all the time. when you kind of put an event together around the idea of thanking someone, I think that says so much. I don’t even think he was expecting that, to be of that magnitude.

I know for me, it was thanking Ne-Yo. For Renaldo, it was thanking Chris and we had some other amazing people that were being honored there that day, too. So the following morning when I woke up, it was just all that emotion.

Just being able to just thank these people that came before us and just showing your gratitude is a big thing.

Sometimes we sit and we get caught up in the idea of me, me, me. Just helping myself and putting myself on, that we forget that nothing in this world belongs to you. I think it’s very important that when someone does you a favor - or someone just looks out for you in any kind of way, it’s your responsibility as a human to just say thank you.

Just show how grateful you are for a person coming to meet you, speaking to you, talking to you because nobody owes you anything.

I was just overwhelmed with the idea of just how people came to support the event. We had executives there that we looked up to, I know I looked up to for years, came out showing me love. Thanking me and telling me how proud they were of me and I had one of my biggest friends, my friend there and I got a chance to actually thank him for actually being this amazing person. So I was excited, you know I was excited - I was happy. I try to go back to that feeling and that’s what I want to keep doing. I want to spend my life giving back or giving opportunities or being thankful, showing gratitude. I think that’s something that – what the key to happiness is, you know not just 56 XPOSURE MAGAZINE www.xposure365.com

focusing on me, me and what I can do for myself. I think that if you focus on more what you can do for others and how you can help other people, I think that the blessings and whatever comes back your way is going to be ten times what you ever imagined.

True.

So that’s my – sorry to get so deep right here. So you know I didn’t mean to – [chuckles] it just felt good. It was good. Everyone was happy. The sponsors were happy. Everyone was so glad. So definitely glad we did it and we’re definitely looking forward to next year.

How do you find the balance between your passion for your career and loving what you do and balancing that with the home, personal life and family life? How do you balance that?

You know I live by a simple rule of unconditional love and when you unconditionally love something, you give it a hundred and ten percent and you don’t complain about it. You don’t second guess it, you don’t think twice. You go and you wake up in the morning and you give it that hundred and ten percent. You know I have this quote from an executive friend of mine. He said if you want something done, give it to a busy person. They’ll get to it [chuckles] before someone lazy will. It’s unconditional love I have for music, for my family, for my future family.

You know the way I look at it now is if I don’t hustle today, my future wife or my future kids, I want them to relax.

I want them to chill out. I want them to have a good time and enjoy life and the beautiful thing about this is that I found what I love. I found that I love being involved in music because I love the way music helps people. It makes people feel something. Anything that makes people feel something is a beautiful thing.

When you’re asking about balance, I don’t really see it as something that I have to balance honestly. I just think about the fact of how much I love it and how much I want to be a part of it because I love it that much. When you love something, you just want it to be good. You just want it to be great and be passionate about that because you love it. You care about it and that’s the essence. You should never be involved with something, involve yourself with something that you don’t have passion for. It’s just that simple. Obviously, things are not always ever that simple but if there’s a process to changing your career path, then start that process and focus. Dedicate yourself and the love you have for whatever it is. I look at it like this - if it doesn’t work at the end of the day, at least you had fun doing it because you loved it.

Right, that’s true. That’s true.

So unconditional love, unconditional love.

I think it’s good in theory but I think putting it into practice is something different.

Definitely. I’ve missed a lot of graduations, missed birthdays - I’ve missed a lot. I definitely understand that but what I understand even more is that the process of getting – like there’s no room for feeling bad about anything.

There’s no room for feeling bad about anything in life because the minute you start feeling – this is just what my theory and how I like to think about something.

The minute you start to feel bad for something, you kind of don’t think about the process or the growth in moving forward in anything. I’ll give you an example, right and I’ll give you this quick example. I had an English Bulldog and she passed away. This happened about a year ago and I sat back and I was hurt, I was in pain. Shit, I cried.

That was my best friend, every time I came home - she was there happy. No matter what kind of day I had she was there happy. I sat back, and I spoke to one of my brothers and they told me like that is the essence of what the dog was there for. The dog was the example of love, unconditional love. It couldn’t talk to you. It couldn’t tell you every day it loved you but you felt it. You felt that unconditional love, right? So that principle within itself, the dog never made you second-guess the love that it had for you. When it was outside, never ran away from you. It came back to you and it ate everything, whatever you gave it. It believed in you every single day. If you can love life the way that dog loved you, or if you can love anything, like unconditional love, there’s no room for second-guessing. You bring your blessings and you bring whatever’s meant for you closer to you and to me, I took that example because he’s right.

I never had to second-guess the affection, the love and sometimes God puts things in your life in order for you to understand something. It was a short amount of time, I only had that dog maybe about four or five years. You know she passed away, but the principle behind it lives with me forever and it’s going to live with me forever. I think that that’s the essence of why some things in life come. Like you might have a situation in life with a family member, or you might have a problem where something happens. It might affect something in your life and rather than think about the issue at hand, think about what you learned from the situation. How did that situation make you a better person? Become some way, somehow I guarantee you it’ll make you a better person. Probably made you wiser, probably made you a little bit more calmer.

Think about the positive effect in it you know and I’m not saying don’t feel bad about it but focus more on the lesson behind it and the positive effect that it had on you. What you learned from the situation and allow that to be the inch to move you forward, the gas to move you forward to the next stage in your life. You know that’s the way I like to look at it.

Well, Amen, pass the collection plate. I needed that, don’t get stuck on the negative and redirect the energy.

Right, don’t, do not because it’s poison. It’s poison. Don’t you know anything that’s not worth – that doesn’t make you happy. It’s really that simple. You know what I’m saying? It’s just – I know people say all the time, I don’t even want to say it. Don’t focus on that because it’s poison. You know don’t focus on arguments, disagreements, things with people that you can’t control like you said. So really honestly, you know the harsh reality of what it is is that we’re not going to be here forever.

True.

So the amount of time that we have on this planet is crucial. It’s precious. So how dare you focus on something that’s not going to make you a better person, right? Don’t even do it to yourself. Wake up celebrating life. Understand that this time that you have is precious and that you can’t waste it on negative people.

So what’s next for Santos Garcia and The 82 Group?

Well, definitely always like looking for new talent, looking for new artists, looking for new opportunities, looking for new brand partnerships and traveling. One of the most beautiful things you can do is travel. That’s something that I want to say changed my life also, the ability to travel. When I was on the road with Ne-Yo, I went to so many countries and we visited so many places. I got a chance to learn a little bit about so many different people. I think the worst thing you can do is try to isolate yourself from everyone. Go out and learn about different you know cultures and you’d be surprised how people in other places appreciate Americans.They appreciate our culture a lot and are willing to actually give you more and teach you more about theirs because they are so amazed by ours. I think that’s the next thing, looking for artists with talent, brand partnerships and just traveling, traveling, traveling, and that is my next you know my goals for the couple of years.

For the 82 Group, we just want to kind of focus on our clients and continue to build them up as much as possible.

Our hip hop guy, Darnell King is releasing a mixtape very soon, Re’ Lxuise back in the studio working on her next mixtape. So right now, 82 is about to focus on Darnell King’s project that we’re going to release this year, and he’s going to go on tour later on for a college tour and Quiana is such a dope DJ that we’re probably going to take her overseas.

We have readers all around the world reading this in 27 different languages, what last words would you like to leave with everyone?

One key thing that I want to share with everyone is to always remain positive. When you go through your obstacles in life, whether you want to be in the music business or just do anything in life, remain positive. You’re going to have your bad days and your good days. Understand that, but what’s key and what’s important is, know it in your heart of hearts that it’s going to be a better day. It’s going to be another day for you to get up and become a better person, to go back at it and conquer whatever was the issue or whatever’s the problem that you’re going through right now. Take that with you and anything you do in life, whether it’s music, college, school, whatever you’re going through. Think about the positive side of it because that’s what helped me as an executive become who I am today and to this day, helps me become a better person in life.

Mathias Kiss Creates Installation for Boucheron - French jeweler Boucheron has teamed up with artist Mathias Kiss to celebrate a new version of its signature Quatre Radiant ring. Kiss has created a mirrored Radiant Room at the brand’s flagship on Place Vendôme, where the new rose gold version of the ring is on display. Visitors are invited to take photographs in the installation, which is to remain in place until Jan. 2, and to post the results on social media. “The most beautiful contributions will be rewarded,” Boucheron said, without specifying the prize. The Quatre Radiant was launched in 2013 to mark the 120th anniversary of the Place Vendôme boutique.

SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW The 2016 Sundance Film Festival, will be held January 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. Robert Redford, President and Founder of Sundance Institute, said, “From diverse backgrounds, places and perspectives, these independent artists are united by the power of their stories and vision. Their films will soon launch onto the global stage, beginning their journeys through our culture. A new year in independent film will start right here—on the mountain—in January.”

For the 2016 Festival, 120 feature-length films were selected, representing 37 countries and 48 firsttime filmmakers, including 28 in competition.

These films were selected from 12,793 submissions, including 4,081 feature-length films and 8,712 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 1,972 were from the U.S. and 2,109 were international. 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW Tribeca Preview - Tribeca Film Festival will host its 15th edition April 13-24, 2016 in New York City, and has announced a new platform, Tribeca Talks: Storytellers, a series of in-depth conversations with leading creators taking place at the Tribeca Festival Hub and other venues. Tina Fey and Tom Hanks are among the first of the featured actors, artists, musicians, and writers to be announced. In addition, TFF announced that the Tribeca Festival Hub will return to Spring Studios, which will serve as the Festival’s creative center. A gathering place for artists, thinkers, and storytellers, the Hub will host ten days of immersive storytelling experiences, musical performances, panel discussions and special guests.

Among the events will be Imagination Day, powered by the Hatchery, which brings together some of the most influential, provocative and creative minds for an all-day summit that takes place on April 19. The day focuses on: “What happens when our wildest dreams become reality and what will that reality be in our not-so-distant future?” The first round of participants includes entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, founder and chairman of the Virgin Group, and business leader and product innovator Regina Dugan, of Google ATAP.
