For 146 years, under various banners like the CMA and NZMEA, one organisation has stood steadfast in its commitment to bolstering New Zealand’s manufacturing sector. Today, it is known as MAKE|NZ, and while the name has evolved, its core mission remains resolutely the same: supporting manufacturing in Aotearoa. MAKE|NZ distinguishes itself by being truly ‘by manufacturers, for manufacturers.’ Its board comprises individuals with deep, practical experience across a spectrum of manufacturing businesses. This ensures that the support and initiatives offered are grounded in real-world understanding and directly address the challenges and opportunities faced by those on the factory floor and in the boardroom.
The organisation provides nationwide support through its weekly newsletter, a vital resource tracking the latest developments in manufacturing both locally and internationally. However, MAKE|NZ’s impact is perhaps most keenly felt through its inperson engagement, particularly with Canterbury manufacturers. These interactions foster a powerful sense of community and facilitate invaluable peer-to-peer learning.
Members can expect to connect with fellow manufacturers at events designed to inform and inspire. These include:
Fireside chats: Casual, routine meetings featuring presenters discussing topics directly relevant to manufacturers, offering excellent networking opportunities for leaders.
Production manager meetings: Often held as site visits, these tours allow groups to learn from the successes and lessons learned by other factories in optimising their operations.
Beyond these structured events, MAKE|NZ is continuously seeking new avenues to serve its community. Their work in advocacy, the development of in-house training modules,
and simply connecting manufacturers to collaboratively solve problems are testament to this commitment. MAKE|NZ is not just an organisation; it’s a vital network actively helping manufacturers navigate challenges and thrive in a dynamic global landscape. Their long history is not just a point of pride, but a foundation of trust and expertise that continues to drive New Zealand manufacturing forward.
“The meetings are great for gleaning valuable insight into all facets of other Canterbury/ New Zealand manufacturers. We’ve touched everything - strategy, marketing, HR, importing and exporting, all the different fronts of manufacturing. We cover the diverse, wide ranging, and all-encompassing aspects of manufacturing.”
Steve Lockhart, Manufacturing Engineering Manager, Hamilton Jet

At the University of Canterbury, Bachelor of Engineering students gain invaluable hands-on experience through impactful collaborations, including student-led Professional Clubs and Final Year BE (Hons) Projects, preparing them for success in their careers.
We support a range of student-led clubs that enable students to work on practical projects to develop their professional engineering skills and engage with industry partners outside their engineering programme/curriculum. Clubs benefit from our students’ passion for innovation, with all our clubs providing students a platform to apply their engineering knowledge to tackle challenges and compete in both national and international competitions. Our clubs are the most meaningful facilitator for our students becoming effective future innovators.
UC students have built a reputation for completing complex engineering tasks in a range of contexts including rocket development, FSAE (Formula Society of Automotive Engineering) cars, human-powered vehicles, artificial hearts, competition robotics, and sustainable buildings. Clubs such as UC Biomed have also completed biomedical engineering service trips to Tonga.
Student clubs are also supported by a range of industry partners who assist clubs in a variety of ways, including through sponsorship, engineering goods and services, facility use, software, and access to engineering expertise.
If your business is interested in engaging with and supporting one of our professional clubs in any way, please get in contact with the department: mechanicalengineering@canterbury.ac.nz
In their final year, undergraduate students apply their engineering knowledge and skills to provide research and development solutions to real industry problems. Each project is worked on by students in teams of four, with support from the industry sponsors, as well as academic and technical staff. The commercial reality of these final year projects allows students to develop professional skills that help them to transition into becoming professional engineers following the completion of their degree.
The majority of our final year projects come from industry partners including national and international businesses, engineering firms, research organisations, and non-profit organisations. Getting students to work on these projects is a real win-win for industry partners and undergraduate students. Students benefit from the experience of working on real-world projects, and industry sponsors benefit from developing new knowledge from the student’s research projects, sometimes leading to further research and development opportunities.
The scope of projects for final year projects is broad and covers a wide range of topics. Key focus areas include, but are not limited to engineering design and analysis, manufacturing, product development, biomedical engineering, aerospace engineering, sport engineering, and the development of assistive devices.
To learn more about how the University of Canterbury can help solve your technical challenges, please contact: digby.symons@canterbury.ac.nz
Other ways to engage with us include research, service, and consultancy projects. Many service and consultancy opportunities stem from the use of UC’s specialized, stateof-the-art equipment. In terms of research, we actively collaborate with industries and businesses to drive innovation, strengthening and advancing both the local and national economy. For example, the rapid advancement of robotics and automation technologies has highlighted the growing need for precise remote operations controlled by humans. In response, we propose a Mixed Reality (MR)enhanced telerobotic platform designed for intuitive remote teleoperation in hazardous and challenging environments, such as contaminated sites, underwater operations, or extreme welding scenarios.
Our demonstration successfully showcases how this technology can also be used to train new apprentices to learn new tasks such as welding. The approach integrates mixed reality virtual fixtures with hybrid haptic constraints, guiding the operator’s hand movements along a conical path to precisely align the welding torch and ensure the operation stays within a collision-free zone.
Feel free to come and visit us at stand #169! We would love to discuss possible collaborations on research, service, and consultancy projects.
