Kia ora and welcome to the co-located BuildNZ, Facilities Integrate, and The National Safety Show for 2026, New Zealand's largest trade-only event for the combined building, construction, facilities management, and safety industries - bringing the whole supply chain together under one roof at the Auckland Showgrounds.
This year's seminar programme tackles the conversations the industry is actually having. The Future of Housing Summit, presented with Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects, brings together Building & Construction Minister Hon. Chris Penk, economist Tony Alexander, and a cross-party housing debate in this election year. Over at the Verkada Knowledge Theatre, pollster David Farrar reads the runes on Election 2026, while sessions on psychosocial risk, neurodiversity, AIdriven productivity, and the workforce shortage round out two days of essential industry insight.
The National Safety Show Seminar Series brings Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Hon. Brooke van Velden to the stage, alongside legal experts from Hesketh Henry unpacking the biggest health and safety reform since 2015, plus practical sessions on wellbeing, drug and alcohol testing, and first aid readiness.

Asbestos is often seen as a problem of the past. New Zealand banned imports of asbestos products in 2016, but the truth is more confronting: asbestos remains our leading work-related killer, claiming the lives of around 220 people every year.
Those deaths are today’s toll from past exposures to asbestos fibres that can be breathed in. The legacy of asbestos is still built into thousands of homes, schools and workplaces across the country. Any property constructed or renovated before 2000 may contain asbestos: in ceilings, cladding, insulation, vinyl tiles, pipe lagging, switchboards and more.
At the same time, not every product containing asbestos presents an immediate threat. If asbestos is intact and undisturbed, the risk is low. The real danger comes when it is broken or mishandled.
The danger lies in the fibres released when asbestoscontaining materials are drilled, cut, sanded or demolished. Once inhaled, they can lodge in the lungs for decades and cause diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. There is no safe level of exposure.
Asbestos is especially dangerous because the harm can happen over time. Symptoms may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure. What we are seeing now reflects work practices from decades ago. The choices we make on sites today will determine the health statistics of the future. It can also be hard to spot if you don’t know what you’re looking for.
For instance, asbestos-containing cladding, if intact and undisturbed, presents a low risk, especially if the cladding is painted. The real danger comes when it is broken or mishandled. Loose or friable asbestos always presents a danger and is often mixed with general dust around areas such as old electrical switchboards or boiler lagging. That is why the right approach is identification and careful management. We don’t need to fear asbestos, but at the same time, we need to be aware and follow good health and safety practice.
The real safeguard is people who know enough to make the right decision in the moment.
That’s why Site Safe, in collaboration with WorkSafe, developed an Asbestos Awareness training course. It’s designed for those most likely to come across asbestos in their day-to-day work: tradespeople, building managers, maintenance teams and even home renovators. The course is practical and focused on what matters: where asbestos is found, understanding the risks, what the law requires, and what steps to take when the presence of asbestos is identified.
It's not just a ‘tick box’ exercise. The outcome we’re aiming for is not a certificate on the wall, but workers and businesses who are better prepared to pause, assess, and act before harm occurs.
Managing asbestos isn’t complicated, but it does mean staying ahead and regularly carrying out the proper checks:
Pause and presume: if you’re working on building material or equipment from the year 2000 or earlier, assume asbestos may be present until confirmed otherwise.
• Test, don’t guess: Have materials sampled and checked by a competent asbestos surveyor.
• Plan and manage: if asbestos is identified, businesses and building owners must have a written asbestos management plan and keep it up to date.
• Use the right people: Asbestos removal in a workplace generally needs to be carried out by a licensed asbestos removalist. A competent person may remove 10 square metres or less of non-friable asbestos, but it must still be done safely and in line with asbestos regulations.
• Control exposure: apply the hierarchy of controls, from elimination through to PPE, backed by monitoring and safe disposal.
• Communicate: label asbestos, brief all staff and contractors, and keep records current.
These steps can help you and your workmates stay safe.
Editorial supplied by: Brett Murray, Chief Executive, Site Safe NZ
Asbestos is still very much in our homes, schools, and worksites, and it will be for some time yet.
That’s why this is about being prepared, not alarmed. It comes down to people on the ground knowing when to pause, when to test, and when to bring in the right help.
Regulation sets the framework and can guide appropriate forms of measurement to assess the risk, but what really keeps people safe are the everyday decisions made on site. The more we share knowledge, build skills, and communicate with each other, the fewer chances there are for things to go wrong.
At Site Safe, our role is to help make that easier, giving people the confidence to recognise risk and deal with it sensibly. Asbestos may still be part of our past and our present but with the right approach, it doesn’t have to define our future.

BuildNZ, marking 15 years of continuous participation since its debut in 2011.
Delivered in partnership with the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (GNZCC), the Pavilion has grown from a small collective stand into one of the show's strongest international features, showcasing German construction, engineering, and building technology to the New Zealand market.
This year also brings a major leadership change at GNZCC. After 30 years of service, Monique Surges has stepped down as Chief Executive, with Jörg Schmidt stepping into the role. Schmidt brings 37 years at Mercedes-Benz AG and experience across four continents to the Chamber's mission of strengthening German–New Zealand business ties.
GNZCC supports New Zealand exporters and importers working with German markets, and has delivered a wide range of energy-efficiency and construction-sector projects locally, helping introduce high-performance building systems and advanced manufacturing solutions to the New Zealand industry.

“Made in Germany” has been known for high quality and trustworthiness for more than a century and enjoys that worldwide recognition until today.

Since 2011 the ‘Made in Germany’ pavilion initiated by the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (GNZCC) is recognised as an important part of BuildNZ. At the last BuildNZ, the GNZCC ‘Made in Germany’ pavilion hosted 11 leaders in German building
Aotearoa New Zealand faces significant housing challenges. We need more and different types of homes, delivered more efficiently, and we need them to respond to the environmental, social and economic realities of the future – one that architects have a vital role in shaping.
Too often, housing discussions focus solely on quantity. While increasing supply is important, the quality of the homes and neighbourhoods we create matters just as much. Good housing is about more than providing shelter. It influences health outcomes, community wellbeing, transport, energy consumption and the character of our towns and cities.
As our urban centres continue to grow, architects are helping to create smarter density. This means moving beyond the traditional choice between standalone suburban houses on quarter-acre sections and highrise apartment towers. Through thoughtful design, we can deliver medium-density neighbourhoods that provide greater housing choice while maintaining access to sunlight, privacy, green space and community connections. Well-designed density can support vibrant, walkable communities and make better use of existing infrastructure.
Architects are also developing new housing typologies that respond to changing lifestyles and demographics. Co-housing communities, adaptable multi-generational homes, build-to-rent developments and compact urban housing all have a role to play in expanding choice and

improving affordability. Innovation in housing design will be essential if we are to meet the needs of future generations.
Sustainability must also be central to the conversation. There is a major opportunity to reduce the environmental impacts of construction through more efficient building techniques, lower-carbon materials, passive design strategies, adaptive re-use of existing structures and regenerative options that create resilient communities that also respond to climate-related risks.
The future of housing will require collaboration across the built environment ecosystem. Architects are ready to work constructively with all political parties, central and local government, industry, developers, planners and communities to develop practical solutions to New Zealand’s housing challenges. Good outcomes will depend on shared purpose, long-term thinking and a willingness to bring design expertise into policy, planning and delivery.
The Institute and I believe that housing policy works best when it is informed by practical experience and is focused on creating long-term economic and social outcomes. Architects bring a unique perspective to these discussions, balancing technical performance, economic realities, environmental responsibility and the user experience. By contributing to policy development as well as project delivery, architects can help ensure that housing solutions are both achievable today and resilient for future generations.
The challenge ahead is not simply to build more homes. It is to create places where people can thrive as part of a community. By combining good design, sustainability and innovation, architects can help deliver housing that meets the needs of a growing and shifting population. This includes challenging us to think in new ways about intergenerational living and culturally grounded housing, while strengthening the social, environmental and cultural fabric of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The decisions we make today will shape how New Zealanders live for generations to come. Architects are ready to be part of that conversation and part of the solution.

More than an exhibition, HVAC&R Hub is the place to be for expert knowledge and insight into the future of HVAC&R in New Zealand.
It’s not always visible, but HVAC&R plays an important role in New Zealand’s built environment. It quietly hums in our homes and offices, keeps us comfortable through the changing seasons from the top of the country to the far south, ensures primary industries like dairy and food manufacturing are kept moving, and much more.
HVAC&R Hub showcases those shaping the future of this industry.
If you’re a professional seeking innovation, education and connection, this is the place to be. Whether you’re navigating regulatory change, optimising your energy efficiency or adopting the latest in smart technologies, this free, industry-focused destination showcases the future of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration.
More than an exhibition, HVAC&R Hub is a place for collaboration. It’s quickly become a must-attend event on the industry calendar for contractors, consultants, suppliers and end-users to engage and explore – a chance for you to gain practical knowledge you can apply in your business, exclusive access to innovations
before they reach the mainstream, and direct access to the people influencing where our industry is heading.
For the first time, HVAC&R Hub also presents the HVAC&R Summit. A full seminar programme, leading international and local technical experts will offer fresh insights, case studies and thought-leadership discussions. There will also be a focus on emerging technologies, smart solutions and the sustainable practices transforming the built environment. Across two full days with 30 speakers, the Summit will deliver industry seminars, technical talks, new product showcases, educational sessions, a company breakfast and dedicated opportunities to those who register.
With more on offer than ever before, HVAC&R Hub 2026 is an event not to be missed. Whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned professional, this is your opportunity to engage directly with peers and experts. It’s where ideas are exchanged, problems are solved, and partnerships are born.

As the commercial cleaning and facilities management sector evolves, innovation is no longer a future concept - it is happening now. This transformation will be showcased at CleanNZ™ Expo 2026, now part of Facilities Integrate, alongside the CleanNZ™ CleanSweep™ Innovation Awards.
At the heart of the CleanNZ™ Expo is the Innovation Zone, a central hub where visitors can explore new products, connect with suppliers, and discover solutions for sectors such as healthcare, education, transport, aged care, hospitality, and commercial environments.
The annual CleanNZ™ CleanSweep™ Innovation Awards, hosted by Building Service Contractors Inc., celebrate excellence across Aotearoa New Zealand’s cleaning industry. The awards recognise the people, practices, and technologies raising industry standards. Unlike traditional awards, entries are judged through written submissions and live demonstrations, allowing both judges and attendees to see performance in realworld conditions. Winners will be announced at the CleanSweep™ Awards Dinner on 16 July 2026.
Those wanting to experience the awards evening can purchase tickets via bsc.org.nz/news/cleansweep-dinner.
Robotics, AI and Smarter Equipment
AI-driven cleaning systems are moving beyond basic automation, using real-time navigation, 3D perception, and data insights to improve performance. These solutions reduce labour demands and resource use while improving outcomes. Compact mechanised equipment is also enhancing productivity by enabling safe, efficient cleaning in hard-to-reach areas.
Biological Cleaning and Residual Performance
Cleaning chemistry is rapidly advancing. Probiotic solutions introduce microorganisms that continue working after application, breaking down organic matter and supporting healthier environments. Advanced misting systems offer dual air and surface cleaning with longer-lasting effects, strengthening hygiene and infection prevention.
Sustainability in Action
Sustainability initiatives are accelerating, with circular programmes recovering materials like paper and microfibre cloths for reuse. Innovations such as ultra-concentrates, plastic-free systems, and passive technologies are reducing waste, emissions, and overall environmental impact.
For facility managers, these innovations offer greater visibility, improved compliance, and more efficient operations. For cleaning professionals, they signal a shift toward a more skilled, technology-enabled workforce.
