About Etihad Modern Art Gallery (EMAG) Etihad Modern Art Gallery (EMAG) is a multi-purpose art space and café in the heart of the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi. The gallery is open to the public every day (excluding Fridays) from 10am to 10pm, with an open door and free admission policy. Beginnings The owner, H.E. Khaled Siddiq Al Mutawaa, envisioned a friendly and versatile art space, that is open to everyone, which encouraged the promotion, discussion and growing appreciation of the burgeoning Emirati art scene. Opening in 2013, EMAG organised significant art shows and local heritage exhibitions, creating bonds with the international art scene and academic institutions. We achieved this by inviting international artists to live, teach and create in the UAE, motivating local artists to showcase their work and hosting a wide range of parallel cultural activities like art workshops, poetry nights and music events. Now & Into the Future Now, EMAG has a new exhibition with a VIP opening every month and importantly, we have extended our connections with respected galleries and institutions in Europe. In December 2016, EMAG was the first ever privately-funded gallery from the UAE to host a large scale exhibition in Berlin, the art capital of Europe. The ‘Art Nomads: Made in Abu Dhabi’ exhibition announced the arrival of Emirati artists in the international art world with numerous excellent reviews in German and international media, including Harper’s Bazaar magazine. During 2017 / 2018, EMAG will continue the promotion of excellent Emirati and UAE-based international artists with a presence in celebrated Art Fairs around the world. The planned 2017 season of exhibitions will see an even more diverse and prestigious display of new and exciting artists from around the globe and continued international publicity for UAE culture. Our Goal The goal of EMAG is a continuous progression of the art scene in Abu Dhabi, as well as promoting Emirati traditions, culture and art to a wider global audience. We aim to open a dialogue with the public and introduce new cultural concepts, whilst promoting the environmentally-conscious vision of our founder, H.E. Khaled Siddiq Al Mutawaa.

RISK Legendary graffiti artist RISK - born Kelly Graval - started his career as an illegal graffiti artist. He brought the typical New York style to the west coast, combining the look with his idiosyncratic colourful palette, inspired by the Californian surf and skate culture. Having come a long way since his roots as an illegal graffiti artist, RISK has exhibited in a series of galleries and later opened his own exhibition space Buckshot Gallery, with the aim of providing a free and inspiring space for emerging talent. 9

BARB A R A

VA U G H N

Barbara Vaughn is a fine-art photographer based in New York City and San Francisco. She is represented by several galleries and has exhibited her work across the U.S. since 2000. Her photographs displayed at Etihad Modern Art Gallery show fleeting reflections on moving water. While the images are un-retouched and representational, they are rendered abstract by the water’s undulation, engaging the imagination of the viewer. The distinctive shapes created by this distortion evoke the works of avant-garde abstract painters such as Kandinsky and Joan Miró. Her earlier portraits of celebrities, businessmen, and artists has been published in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Paris Match, Art in America, Allure, and Time magazines, in addition to several books.

WAG N ER

A graduate of the School of the Arts Chicago, Mark Van Wagner has participated in a number of exhibitions from New York through Chicago to Kauai (Hawaii) in prominent galleries, such as Sotheby’s International. Wagner uses natural and pigmented sand to construct his pieces that resemble architectonic elements and signs. They almost appear to be monolithic monitors infused with waves created by the shapes and the movement of sand.

Lila Roo, a modern day nomad, lives and travels throughout the globe. She incorporates her journey into her oeuvre by working intimately with people and places to createportraits, performance art and installations that are transformative and empowering. She creates her pieces made from refuse material, mainly plastic waste, the most ubiquitous resource in the world today. The hand-collected plastic strips are braided into ropes and brought to life as building blocks of installations set in real life communities that she encounters. Roo approaches art as a ritual act, which she uses as a means of engaging people and environments, while connecting them through universal visual symbols.

BRU N A

ST U D E

Bruna Stude graduated from the Law University in Split, Croatia, before leaving her home country in 1987 to pursue a life at sea. Besides numerous shows in Kauai (Hawaii), Bruna has exhibited in Santa Monica (CA), Sarasote (FL) and Paris (France). Her works can be found in public and private collections from Hawaii to Paris. Strude has been photographing the Ocean for over twenty years. While her earlier work depicted sea creatures and an abundance of natural phenomena, her latest images mirror the empty ocean, reflecting the effects of human civilisation. She believes that “the awareness of the absence of something affects us more than its presence. Loosely inspired by Chinese calligraphy, Strude depicts the void left after a once immeasurably richer ocean life.
