W a t is P e r s p e k t i e f ?

Perspektief is een in 1980 door kunstenaars en fotografen opgerichte vereniging die zich ten doel stelt de creatieve fotografie in haar ontwikkeling te stimuleren. Naast de uitgifte van een tijdschrift doet ZIJ dit door het organiseren van workshops, lezingen, discussies, het verzorgen van reizende tentoonstellingen en het maken van tentoonstellingen voor de eigen galerie Sinds het najaar van 1984 heeft Perspektief de beschikking over een bijzonder fraaie en ruime (90 m ) tentoonstellingsruimte in het centrum van Rotterdam In hetzelfde pand zijn tevens de workshopruimtes en het kantoor ondergebracht De activiteiten van de vereniging komen tot stand door de gecombineerde inzet van onbetaalde vrijwilligers en een groeiend aantal professionele medewerkers De activiteiten worden mede mogelijk gemaakt door subsidies van onder meer het Ministerie van Welzijn, Volksgezondheid en Cultuur, de gemeente Rotterdam en de Rotterdamse Kunststichting 2

W h a t is P e r s p e k t i e f ?

Perspektief is an association established in 1980 by artists and photographers for the purpose of stimulating the development of creative photography In additiun to pubhshmg a magazine the association orgamzes workshops, lectures and dis cussions. and arranges travelling exhibi tions as well as exhibitions in its own gallery. Since autumn 1984 Perspektief has at its disposal a particularly fine and spacious (90 m'') exhibition space in the centre of Rotterdam The workshop spaces and an office are housed in the same building. S p r a a k v e r w a r r i n g a l o m , b e d o e l d is hier namelijk de s u b s i d i e aan d e S t i c h t i n g N e d e r l a n d s F o t o A r c h i e f (NFA) w a a r t o e d e minister heeft b e s l o t e n met ingang v a n 1986, wat hij d a a g s na het s y m p o s i u m / s e m i n a r ' N a a r een Nederlands Instituut v o o r de f o t o g r a f i e ' in de K a m e r bij de behandeling v a n d e M u s e u m n o t a b e k e n d m a a k t e .

D o o r het o n d e r w e r p v a n g e n o e m d s y m p o s i u m en seminar, waaraan de kranten de d a g e r v o o r a a n d a c h t h a d d e n b e s t e e d , is de verwarring waarschijnlijk o n t s t a a n . Z o snel w e r k t het ministerie e c h t e r ( g e l u k k i g nog) niet. Het N F A v e c h t i m m e r s al enkele jaren v o o r s u b s i d i e , die ijver w o r d t nu terecht bel o o n d . D e journalist die de drie t o n als s u b s i d i e v o o r een fotoinstituut d a n w e l m u s e u m v a n het papiertje v a n de minister o v e r s c h r e e f z o n d e r een k r i t i s c h e vraag te stellen is zeker niet in R o t t e r d a m a a n w e z i g g e w e e s t . . . G o e d e raad v a n Frizot luidde: N o o i t met een b u d g e t v a n m i n d e r d a n drie a vier miljoen g u l d e n v a n start g a a n . V o o r m i n d e r g e l d is naar zijn m e n i n g de uitstraling te g e r i n g o m e f f e c t te s o r t e r e n .

C o l i n F o r d , ' k e e p e r ' v a n w a t d o o r s o m m i g e n als het Disneyland v a n de f o t o g r a f i e is g e n o e m d , hielp het fabeltje de wereld uit dat een dergelijke populaire o p z e t (met resultaat meer d a n een miljoen b e z o e k e r s b i n n e n t w e e jaar na oprichting) z o u k u n n e n resulteren in een b u i t e n g e w o o n laag, te s u b s i d i ë r e n exploitatietekort. Het N M F P T streeft ernaar, maar is n o g niet z o ver, é é n derde v a n haar budget uit entreegelden en v e r k o o p v a n zelf u i t g e g e v e n b o e k e n te dekk e n . H o e w e l Ford v a a g bleef over zijn totale b u d g e t , lijkt hiermee m i n i m a a l een b e d r a g in d a orde v a n grootte v a n de d o o r Frizot g e n o e m d e s o m g e m o e i d te zijn. Dat Ford v a a g k o n blijven, o o k tijdens het s e m i n a r dat in het w e e k e n d p l a a t s v o n d , w a s te wijten aan een onder de d e e l n e m e r s ontbrandende d i s c u s s i e o v e r d e N e d e r l a n d s e situatie. Szark o w s k i c o n s t a t e e r d e d a a r o p uitermate nuchter dat het voor Nederland tijd w a s o m de p r o b l e m e n nader te d e f i n i ë r e n .

A n d r i e s t e n slotte verkeert in een zorgelijke situatie z o bleek (veel te w e i n i g g e l d maar w e l een aardige ruimte), die v o o r o n s een w a a r s c h u w i n g k a n i n h o u d e n .

D e drie d a g e n die s y m p o s i u m e n s e m i n a r d u u r d e n h e b b e n de n o o d z a a k duidelijk g e m a a k t v a n een v o r m v a n c o n s e n s u s v a n het v e l d . Hat valt d a n o o k te h o p e n dat het in de afsluitende d i s c u s s i e t o e g e z e g d e d i s c u s s i e - p l a t f o r m onder de hoede v a n de Federatie v a n K u n s t e n a a r s v e r e n i g i n g e n er k o m t , puur stedelijke b e l a n g e n w e e t te neutraliseren en o p korte termijn met de definitie v a n het N e d e r l a n d s e prob l e e m , die z o a l s zo v a a k w e l l i c h t al de halve o p l o s s i n g inhoudt, o p de p r o p p e n k o m t . Daar gaat ie d a n . . .

'Brinkman has 300,000 guilders for photography institute' ran the headline of an article in The Volkskrant on Tuesday, December 1st last year. Mention was made in the article of a museum of photography as well as an institute of photography. Altogether a mix-up of terms — what is meant actually is the grant which the Minister of Culture has decided to award to the Stichting Nederlands FotoArchief (NFA), beginning in 1986. The Minister announced this during the Parliamentary discussion of the Museums budget, a few days af ter the symposium/seminar 'Towards a Dutch Institute for Photography.'

The confusion probably arose because of the topic of this symposium/seminar, which the Press had devoted attention to some days previously.

However, the Ministry does not (fortunately) get things accomplished that quickly. Af ter all, the NFA has been fighting for several years to get subsidy, and their zaal is now being justly rewarded.

On page 10 of this issue you can find out more about the archive, its plans and the urgent need for them.

The realization of a Dutch Institute or Museum for Photography will still require a lot of time spent on discussions and lobbying. The symposium organised by the General Studies Department of Erasmus University and Perspektief provided a mountain of information from the representatives of the invited institutions: John Szarkowski (Museum of Modern Art, New York), Michel Frizot (deputizing for Robert Delpire, Centre National de la Photographie, Paris), Colin Ford (National Museum for Film, Photography and Television, Bradford) and Pool Andries (Provinciaal Museum voor Fotografie, Antwerp).

Considerable insight was gained into the consequences of the very different models chosen by each country in relation to the other institutions operating there and the budgets at their disposal. The journalist who copied down the figure of 300 thousand as subsidy for a photography institute or museum from the Minister's document without asking any quastions was undoubtedly not among those present in Rotterdam... Frizot had some good advice: never start with a budget of less than three to four million guilders. In his opinion anything less makes the operation too limited to have any effect. Colin Ford, 'Keeper' of what some are already calling the Disneyland of photography, helped to dispel the myth that this sort of popular set-up (resulting in more than a million visitors two years af ter being established) ought to result in an extraordinarily low budget deficiency to be covered by subsidy.

The NMFPT is trying, but has not so far succeeded, to cover a third of its budget from admission payments and sales of the books its publishes.

Although Ford remained vague about his total budget, it seems that at the least a figure of the order of magnitude mentioned by Frizot was at stake. That Ford was able to remain vague, also during the weekend seminar, was blamable on a discussion that broke out among the participants concerning the Dutch situation.

Szarkowski commented extremely soberly that it was time for Holland to define the problems in more detail.

Finally it appeared that Andries is in a precarious situation (a nice space but much too little money), which can contain a warnlng for us.

The three days of the symposium and the seminar have made clear the necessity for a form of national consensus. Let us hope that the discussion platform under the auspices of the Federation of Artists' Associations, which was promised in the closing discussion, comes about, can manage to neutralise purely civic interests and turns up shortly with the definition of the Dutch problem, which as so of ten perhaps already holds half the solution.

egen het einde van de 19de eeuw begon men de pas opgekomen technologie van de fotografische vastlegging te gebruiken om sociale ongerechtigheden aan de kaak te stellen, een gebied dat daarvoor alleen door illustratoren en een paar schilders was uitgebeeld. De camera had reeds de triomfen van de industrialisatie, de fabrieken, bruggen, spoorwegen, etc. vastgelegd, evenals de leden van de nieuwe klasse van ondernemers die er verantwoordelijk voor waren, maar had geen aandacht besteed aan de andere, minder aangename kant van het verhaal - slech-

heel gezien worden. Van een produktiegerichte maatschappij, waarin objecten en mensen konden worden voorgesteld als volledig aanwezig materiële ingezetenen van de 'echte' wereld, zijn wij veranderd naar een consumptie gerichte samenleving, die de subjectieve, passieve beleving van een afgebeelde wereld met zich meebrengt. Zoals een schrijver het onlangs uitdrukte, 'het toerisme heeft het imperialisme vervangen'. Foto's worden nu bewonderd en niet langer gevreesd zoals in de tijd dat Lewis Hine bezig was.

te behuizing, kinderarbeid en de uitbuiting van ethnische minderheden. De sociale hervormingsfotografie van Jacob Riis en Lewis Hine, die deze misstanden wel vastlegden, hing af van het opwekken van emotionele respons om, in één woord, als propaganda te dienen. Wat dat betreft slaagde zij erin wat belangrijke successen te boeken, die bijdroegen tot de totstandkoming van hervormingswetten. De praktijk van de 'geëngageerde' fotografie werd in de jaren dertig voortgezet met het werk van de Farm Security Administration in Amerika tot aan Eugene Smith's onthulling van de chemische vergiftiging van het dorp Minamata. Ondanks prijzenswaardige inspanningen als David Bailey's impressies van Ethiopische slachtoffers van de hongersnood, slaagt tegenwoordig waarschijnlijk een TV-reportage er eerder in de belangstelling van het publiek op te wekken voor een bijzonder probleem van maatschappelijke of humanitaire aard, waardoor de documentairefotografen wat overbodig worden maar tegelijkertijd ook vrijer om toe te geven aan de 'persoonlijke uitdrukking'. Niet alle documentaire fotografie is begaan met sociale hervormingen; vele, zo niet de meeste fotografen zijn minder geïnteresseerd in het veranderen van de maatschappij, dan in het kennen ervan, de wereld te 'zien', zoals Henry R. Luce zich ten doel stelde, in plaats van haar te onderzoeken. Maar kennis is nooit onschuldig; er zijn altijd belangen die gediend worden, of zij nu algemeen zijn of privé.

Met de definitie van de documentaire(-film) van John Grierson uit de jaren dertig als voorbeeld - 'de creatieve behandeling van de realiteit' -, mikken de documentairefotografen op technische perfectie en op die 'beslissende momenten' die hun portfolio's zullen sieren en die hun werk misschien een plaats kunnen verschaffen in de fotomusea. Er zijn veel theorieën over fotografie die iedere creatieve beslissing kunnen verantwoorden en de 'realiteit' zal altijd meer dan voldoende materiaal aanreiken. Tot voor kort bestond er echter een duidelijk gebrek aan theorievorming over de documentaire. De weinig opzienbarende definitie van Grierson mag dan voldaan hebben in de jaren dertig toen de documentaire film en fotografie een onproblematische verhouding kenden met de realiteit, maar in de huidige maatschappij, die even 'immaterieel' als 'materieel' is, moet het gegeven 'realiteit' als een veel complexer ge-

Vandaar het verlangen van de documentaire fotograaf om 'de tijd' te vervangen door middel van een veelzegged 'typerend' beeld dat aan het specifieke voorbijgaat in naam van een tijdloos realisme. Het 'beslissende moment' zet de verhalende, logisch redenerende tijd stil en doet haar helemaal teniet ten gunste van een intuïtieve subjectiviteit die via een magere vastlegging met een vage plaats en datum verbonden is.

Volgens John Szarkowski 'is de fotografie nooit geslaagd in beschrijving....(Foto's) geven het gevoel van een tafereel, terwijl zij de betekenis achter het verhaal achterwege laten'. (1) Maar achter de foto, zo niet erin, gaat altijd een tekst schuil, of eerder een veelvoud aan teksten: het verhaal van waarom de fotograaf die of die scène verkiest vast te leggen, de betekenissen die eigen zijn aan het beeld zelf (wat wel of niet mag neerkomen op de legendarische 1000 woorden), en de omstandigheden waaronder de foto later wordt bekeken. De belangrijkste zeggingskracht van de documentaire fotografie ligt in het vermeende realisme, de huldiging van het principe van de 'fotografische waarheid'. Maar die waarheid is niets anders dan een vastgestelde aanwezigheid, een toegestane voorstelling van wat Michel Foucault een 'regime van de waarheid' noemt, of wat anderen een 'ideologie' zouden noemen. Zoals John Tagg in zijn essay 'Power and Photography' beweert, 'De waarheid is op zichzelf al macht, gebonden aan het politieke, economische en institutionele staatsbestel dat haar voortbrengt. We moeten de aanspraken van een in diskrediet geraakte documentaire traditie vergeten om te vechten voor 'de waarheid' of ten behoeve van 'de waarheid' en erop toezien dat het een strijd is die gericht is tegen de in onze maatschappij geldende regels op grond waarvan 'echte' en 'valse' voorstellingen worden gescheiden'. (2) We dienen echter niet te vergeten dat de foto als 'echt' document zijn intrede in de geschiedenis deed tijdens de dagen van de Parijse Commune, toen de politie foto's nam om de revolutionairen te kunnen identificeren en vervolgens te berechten. De foto's van Riis en Hine werden evenzeer voorgesteld als bewijs met de bedoeling om, in de woorden van Walter Benjamin, 'de schuld aan het licht te brengen en de schuldigen te noemen'. Zo blij-

ken de hervormingsgezinde fotograaf en de politie een taak gemeen te hebben: misbruiken en onze onrechtvaardigheden te 'identificeren' in naam van het rechtvaardige en het waarachtige, om te onthullen wat verborgen is en om in overtreding zijnde of 'marginale' culturen onder toezicht van het 'oog van de macht' te plaatsen, of die macht nu disciplinair is of welwillend hervormingsgezind.

De praktijk en het apparaat van de documentaire fotografie zijn doordrenkt van ideologische regels en beperkingen. Fotografen weten doorgaans wat ze willen opnemen alvorens het te vinden, ze hebben vooraf bepaalde ideeën en persoonlijke stilistische voorkeuren, en ze moeten misschien ook rekening houden met de visie van hun opdrachtgevers.

Zijn dit dan de voorwaarden voor het produceren van 'de waarheid'? En wiens waarheid wordt dit?

' p e r s o o n l i j k e visie' I leder jaar geeft de Afdeling Nederlandse Geschiedenis van het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam twee documentaire fotografen de opdracht een bepaalde maatschappelijke 'kwestie' te behandelen. 'Kerk in Overgang', 'Vrouwen in Actie' en 'Andere Culturen in Nederland' waren onder meer onderwerpen in voorgaande jaren. In 1983 was het onderwerp 'Jongeren' en de opdracht werd verstrekt aan de fotografen Maya Pejic (48 jaar) en Hans Singels (41 jaar). Het resultaat van hun werk is onlangs tentoongesteld in het Rijksmuseum en er is een boek uitgekomen met een selectie eruit. (3) Uit hun foto's zou je kunnen opmaken dat jongeren in de Nederlandse maatschappij in een staat van min of meer gelukzalig evenwicht verkeren met voldoende ruimte voor individualiteit en de vrijheid om volgens hun eigen leefstijl te leven.

We zien punks die als andere normale ouders hun baby's verzorgen, dienstplichtigen die zonder klagen hun eerste dag in dienst ondergaan, vakantiegangers die plezier maken, studenten die stijlvol in avondkleding feestvieren, enzovoort. Zelfs het stel dat de ondertiteling 'werkeloos' meekreeg, lacht, ondanks het feit dat, zoals het boek elders vemeldt, de economische positie van de Nederlandse jongere aanzienlijk verslechterd is in de afgelopen vijf jaar. Een werkende jongere van 18 ontvangt tegenwoordig bijna 30% minder dan hij in 1979 zou hebben gekregen. Geen van de realiteiten van de huidige sociaal-economische situatie, noch van de specifieke gevolgen die deze hebben voor jonge mensen, komen duidelijk tot uiting op deze foto's. Pejic en Singels hebben slechts het oppervlakkig vertoon vastgelegd van leefstijlen, van de meest zichtbare aspecten van de hedendaagse jongerencultuur. Vragen over de nauwkeurigheid van dit documentaire project worden door de staf van het Rijksmuseum overgelaten aan het oordeel van toekomstige historici; bij het vaststellen van de waarde van deze foto's zijn 'persoonlijke visie' die door de fotograaf tot uitdrukking wordt gebracht en de mate waarin dit slecht gedefinieerde begrip in staat is het werk 'zeggingskracht' te verlenen van groter belang. Uit het historisch verband gehaald, losgeweekt van hun specifieke karakter, en vooral ontdaan van iedere vorm van medezeggenschap in de verhandeling die hun is opgelegd, is de onderwerpen van dit project doeltreffend het zwijgen opge-

legd en zijn zij gevangen in de versleten praktijken van het achterhaalde documentaireapparaat.

Documentaire fotografen voelen zich vaak aangetrokken tot onderwerpen uit de zelfkant van de samenleving - zigeuners, psychiatrische patiënten, mensen die van gesticht tot gesticht trekken, immigranten, jeugdcultussen, etc. - omdat deze groepen, vanuit de hegemonie van de bourgeoisie bekeken (waartoe de meeste fotografen nu eenmaal behoren) voor een 'afwijking' van de norm staan. Ze vallen op, en smeken er bijna om gefotografeerd te worden. Maar evenzeer als het individuele onderwerp versplinterd is en verspreid over de moderne samenleving, zijn ook deze 'anderen' begonnen het belang van hun onderscheid te verliezen. Sociologie is niet langer een geliefde discipline en er zijn tekenen die wijzen op een toenemende ontgoocheling over de traditionele documentaire

strategische vormen van interventie vastleggen die tot andere sociale strijdperken toegang verschaffen en de institutionele orde van de (fotografische) praktijk verruimen door nieuwe methoden voor produktie, distributie en circulatie toe te passen of te ontwikkelen; door andere formaten te gebruiken; door andere formele oplossingen uit te denken; door andere koersen te volgen dwars door de heersende codes van betekenissen van afbeeldingen heen; en door in een andere verhouding te gaan staan tot diegenen die worden geportretteerd en hen die de foto's bekijken'. (4) Dit zijn zware eisen en er is tot nu toe weinig dat erop wijst dat documentaire fotografen zich erom bekommeren. In plaats daarvan verkiezen zij het om op traditionele gebruiken voor voorstelling en fotografische verhandeling te vertrouwen. We krijgen zelden werk te zien dat èn oppositioneel is (in maatschappelijke zin) èn vernieuwend (zowel

fotografie. De sociale problemen waar de mens van nu in geïnteresseerd is, zijn juist van het soort dat, tenminste tot op het heden, buiten het aanvaardbare bereik van de fotograaf valt, zoals incest, stress, overspel, hyperventilatie, etc. Een recent nummer van het Nederlandse tijdschrift voor documentairefotografie, 'Plaatwerk', biedt ons de oplossing die de fotograaf Johan Vigeveno voor het probleem heeft: hij huurt modellen om de scènes uit te beelden die hij, of het tijdschrift waarvoor hij werkt, nodig heeft. Helaas is het zo dat het resultaat meer op reclamefotografie lijkt dan op documentaire.

ieuwe strategieën Als het echte alleen maar door middel van de illusie kan worden uitgebeeld, en als het 'ware' op de een of andere wijze altijd gelukt ons te ontglippen, wat voor strategieën nu zijn er dan mogelijk voor de 'geëngageerde' fotograaf? Het is wederom John Tagg die radicale voorstellen heeft gedaan om de 'in diskrediet gebrachte' documentaire fotografie nieuw leven in te blazen: 'We moeten die

qua theorie als qua praktijk). Er zijn echter enkele kunstenaars in de Verenigde Staten, Canada en Engeland die de discrepanties en tekortkomingen van het modernisme (de modernistische toeëigening van en waardering voor de fotografie incluis) hebben ingezien en daarom hun toevlucht nemen tot de ontwrichtende strategieën van het 'post-modernisme' ten einde de documentaire 'opnieuw uit te vinden'. Het is niet toevallig dat de meesten van hen daarnaast kritische theoretici zijn, maar het zou misleidend zijn als gesuggereerd werd dat hun werk daarom te lijden heeft van programmatisering. Het moet eerder beschouwd worden als iets wat in het verlengde ligt van de begaanheid met taal en met het toepassen van kunst binnen een sociale context die kenmerkend is voor het conceptualisme dat tegen het eind van de jaren zestig opkwam.

'The Bowery in Two Inadequate Descriptive Systems' (5) van Martha Rosler heeft als onderwerp de bekende en veel gefotografeerde zwervers en dronkaards die de Newyorkse wijk Bowery bevolken. Er valt er echter niet een te bekennen op de foto's van Rosler: in plaats daarvan worden ons bouwvallige win-

keipuien en vieze trottoirs getoond met sporadisch niet meer dan een zichtbaar spoor in de vorm van een weggegooide fles die wijst op het bestaan van een zwerver. Rosler laat duidelijk doorschemeren dat de fotografie ontoereikend is als systeem om de Bowery te beschrijven.

In traditionele uiteenzettingen over sociale misère wordt een combinatie van fotografie en tekst toegepast, waarbij de geschreven informatie dan vaak in de vorm van een overzicht of rapport gegoten is. Maar is deze taal ook maar enigszins geschikter voor beschrijving, zolang het de taal blijkt die, evenals het systeem van de verspreiding ervan, geïdentificeerd wordt met het overwicht van het kapitalisme over haar ongelukkige 'slachtoffers'?

Rosler laat de valsheid van zowel de fotografische als de geschreven taal varen en wisselt haar foto's af met pagina's vol woorden: een vocabulaire van woorden die gebruikt worden om dronkenschap te beschrijven, een 'poëtica van dronkenschap'. De rijkdom van deze taal, de speelse beeldspraak, roemt de dronkaards zoals zij het willen en in hun bewoordingen, en vertrouwt hen niet toe aan het analytische proza van een sociologisch rapport of de barmhartige klanken van het liberaal humanisme. Martha Rosler komt niet met wondermiddelen; het is niet haar bedoeling te hervormen, maar om vooroordelen te betwisten door de regels van de voorstelling te verstoren.

hotography against the grain Dit is ook het doel van Allan Sekula die zich er net als Martha Rosler goed van bewust is dat het nodig is dat de fotograaf en de kunstenaar (of elk ander type werkende, trouwens) kritisch van geest is, zowel ten aanzien van zijn eigen praktijk als ten aanzien van de maatschappij waarin hij leeft. Sekula is één van de zeer weinige kunstenaars werkzaam in de Verenigde Staten die openlijk socialistische oogmerken heeft, en wiens fotografische 'interventies' al een heel eind in de buurt komen van de eerder geciteerde voorwaarden van John Tagg.

Het Nova Scotia College of Art and Design bracht onlangs een collectie van essays en foto's van Sekula uit, 'Photography against the Grain' ('Fotografie tegen de korrel'). Zoals de titel al doet vermoeden, druist het werk van Sekula in tegen de heersende ideeën

over de fotografische theorie en praktijk, en wel in het bijzonder tegen 'het laatste woord dat het formalisme heeft en dat eigen is aan het Amerikaanse modernistische project' dat rust op de esthetische autonomie van het kunstwerk en de autoriteit die eraan verleend wordt, ten koste van een bewustzijn van de rol van de fotografie in de maatschappelijke praktijk en de sociale geschiedenis. Het werk van Sekula is - vergeef mij de woordspeling onbuigzaam seculair: hij is begaan met zaken van deze wereld in tegenstelling tot het spirituele. Een van de essays die in het boek zijn opgenomen is het nu bijna klassieke en vaak herdrukte 'On the Invention of Photographie Meaning', dat handelt over de complexe kwestie van de fotografische 'verhandeling'; de mate waarin betekenis afhangt van en beperkt wordt door de institutionele context waarbinnen zij wordt overgebracht. Door twee 'historische foto's' tegenover elkaar te zetten van hetzelfde onderwerp - immigranten die aan het begin van de eeuw in New York per boot aankomen - , één door Lewis Hine en één door Alfred Stieglitz, slaagt Sekula erin de esthetische, symbolistische pretenties van laatstgenoemde met de grond gelijk te maken ten gunste van de 'realistische', geëngageerde benadering van Hine. Het verschil wordt duidelijk gemaakt door de context waarin de foto's oorspronkelijk werden gepubliceerd: die van Stieglitz op de luxe pagina's van zijn eigen tijdschrift 'Camera Work', die van Hine in het hervormingsgezinde blad 'Charities and Commons'.

Van de foto's van Sekula zelf is het vaak de bedoeling dat zij eerder op universiteiten, scholen en in plaatselijke bibliotheken worden tentoongesteld, dus zo dicht mogelijk bij de plekken waar zij interveniëren, dan in kunstgalerieën of musea. In zijn essay 'The Traffic in Photographs' doet hij een aanval op de isolatie en materialisering van foto's door de museologische gevestigde orde. Op tentoonstellingen zoals 'The Family of Man' worden foto's gescheiden van bepaalde sociale realiteiten en onderworpen aan een 'algemeen makende' humanistische ideologie die, binnen de context van de tijd (het midden van de jaren vijftig bijvoorbeeld), niet zonder politieke implicaties is.

De organisator van die tentoonstelling, Edward Steichen, is tevens het onderwerp van een ander essay van Sekula, 'Steichen at War', dat nader ingaat op de kwestie van de verkenningsfoto's van Steichen die tijdens de

Eerste Wereldoorlog genomen zijn. Sekula vestigt de aandacht op de discrepantie tussen de mythe van Steichen als grote kunstenaar en de realiteiten van zijn carrière. De denkbeelden van Allan Sekula kunnen misschien samengevat worden in zijn bewering dat 'fotografie niet een onafhankelijk of autonoom taalsysteem is, maar afhangt van bredere, discursieve voorwaarden, zonder uitzondering ook van die welke door het systeem van in woorden geschreven taal geschapen zijn. De fotografische betekenis is altijd een hybride constructie, het resultaat van een interactie tussen beeldende, grafische en verhalende conventies'. (6) Hybridisatie is zeker een kenmerk van Sekula's eigen foto's, met hun vermenging van beelden, verhalende teksten en uitgebreide commentaren. 'Aerospace Folktales' (1973) gaat over zijn eigen familieachtergrond en is een documentair verslag van de gevolgen van zijn vaders overbodigheid bij de militair-industriële tak van Lockheed. Bij de oorspronkelijke vertoning werden 142 foto's en titels getoond, viel een geluidsband te beluisteren ingesproken door de ouders van de kunstenaar) en was uitgebreid geschreven commentaar van de kunstenaar te lezen. We zien beelden van de fabriek (die doen denken aan de beroemde opmerking van Brecht dat een foto van de Kruppfabriek niets laat zien van wat die fabriek betekent), het gezin, hun huis (gehuurd van Lockheed), de boeken over de effecten van een atoomoorlog die zijn vader vroeger doornam en we lezen van de persoonlijke reacties van de moeder en de vader op werkloosheid en de bredere maatschappelijke en politieke situatie en vernemen welk commentaar de zoon/kunstenaar op het maken van dit werk heeft. Het feit dat deze verschillende verhandelingen gespeend zijn van privileges, levert een non-ideologische, 'natuurlijker' (men zou bijna 'echter' zeggen) voorstelling van een sociaal probleem; een documentaire waarin de onderwerpen niet het zwijgen is opgelegd.

In This Ain't China: A Photo Novel' (1974), dat ook een 'lokale' situatie laat zien, is dezelfde praktijk toegepast: verhoudingen tussen de werkgever van een cafetaria en zijn personeel. Dit werk bestaat uit portretten van buffetbediendes, hun omgeving en hun produkten, samen met korte verhandelingen die door de kunstenaar vanuit de verschillende gezichtspunten van zijn hoofdfiguren zijn geschreven. Sekula beschrijft het als 'een ko-

medie over gedramatiseerd voedsel', een parodie op een sociaal-realistische roman.

'School is a Factory' (1980) is veel didactischer van aanpak, omdat Sekula hier het gevestigde schoolsysteem onderzoekt, waar hij toen zelf als leraar fotografie op een junior college werkzaam was waar men hoofdzakelijk wordt opgeleid voor handvaardigheids- en administratieve beroepen. Uitgebreide onderschriften bij foto's waarop studenten poseren, geven in grote lijnen de bittere realiteit van hun kansen op werk weer, terwijl een bijgaand essay een pessimistische visie biedt op de groeiende kloof tussen de creatieve en collectieve cultuur.

In geen van zijn werken stoort Allan Sekula zich aan de conventionele scheiding van taken die eist dat men ofwel fotograaf is óf schrijver, kunstenaar of criticus. Hij combineert al deze functies om wat hij een 'politieke geografie' noemt te construeren van de sociale stelsels waarvan hij niet een objectieve observator is, maar waarvan hij deel uitmaakt. Door bij fotografie uit te gaan van een materialistische, sociale geschiedenis zetten Sekula en een paar andere gelijkgerichte kunstenaars zoals Martha Rosler de deur open naar een herwaardering en heruitvinding van de documentairefotografie, die daarmee haar sociale relevantie kan verkrijgen.

At the end of the 19th century the newly emerged technology of photographie documentation began to be applied to the exposure of social injustices, an area that previously had been represented only by illustrators and a few painters. The camera had already recorded the triumphs of industrialisation, the factories, bridges, railways, etc, as well as the members of the new entrepreneurial class who where responsible for them, but had ignored the other, less pleasant side of the story - slum housing conditions, child labour and the exploitation of ethnic minorities. The social reformist photography of Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine, who documented these abuses, depended on the eliciting of an emotional response, in a word, to function as propaganda, and as such it managed to notch up some notable successes, being instrumental in the passing of reformist legislation. The practice of 'concerned' photography continued through the 30's with the work of the Farm Security Administration in America, to Eugene Smith's exposé of chemical poisoning in the village of Minamata. Nowadays, however, despite such praiseworthy efforts as David Bailey's portrayal of Ethiopian famine victims, it is more

definition of documentary (film), 'the creative treatment of reality', documentary photographers aim at technical perfection and at achieving those 'decisive' moments that will grace their portfolios and possibly earn their work a place in the museums of photography.

There are plenty of photographie theories to support whatever creative decisions they may make, and 'reality' will always supply them with more than enough subjects to deal with, but until recently there has been a marked lack of documentary theory. Grierson's bland definition may well have sufficed for the 30's when documentary film and photography enjoyed an unproblematical relationship with actuality, but in today's society, which is as much 'immaterial' as 'material', the issue of 'reality' has to be seen as much more complex. We have shifted from a society geared to production, which enabled objects and people to be represented as fully present material constituents of the 'real' world, to one oriented to consumption, involving the subjective, passive reception of a represented world. As one writer recently put it, 'tourism has replaced imperialism'. Photographs are now admired, no longer feared as they were when Lewis Hine was active.

he n a r r a t i v e Consumption is measured by time. Thus the documentary photographer's desire to capture 'the times' by means of a telling, 'typical' image which ignores the specific in the hope of transcending it in the name of a timeless realism. The 'decisive moment' immobilises and annuals narrative discursive time altogether, in favour of an intuitive subjectivity linked by a meagre caption to a vague place and date.

likely to be a TV special which succeeds in alerting public attention to a particular social or humanitarian issue, thus rendering documentary photographers somewhat redundant, but at the same time more free to indulge in 'personal expression'. Of course, not all documentary photography is committed to social reform; many, if not most, photographers are less interested in changing society than in knowing it, to 'see' the world, as Henry R. Luce proposed, instead of questioning it. But knowledge is never innocent; there are alway interests that are being served, whether public or private.

Taking their cue from John Grierson's 30's

According to John Szarkowski, 'photography has never been successful at narrative...(Photographs) give the sense of the scène, while withholding its narrative meaning. '(1) But behind the photograph, if not in it, there always lies a text, or rather a multiplicity of texts: the story of why the photographer chooses to depict this or that scène, the meanings inherent in the image itself (which may or may not add up to the legendary 1000 words), and the conditions under which the photograph is later viewed.

The main narrative thrust of documentary photography lies in its supposed realism, its adherence to the principle of 'photographie truth'. But this 'truth' is nothing more than a valonzed presence, a privileged representation of what Michel Foucault calls a 'regime of truth', or what others would call 'ideology'.

As John Tagg argues in his essay 'Power and Photography', 'Truth itself is already power, bound to the political, economie and institutional régime which produces it. We must forget the claims of a discredited documentary tradition to fight 'for' 'truth' or 'in favour' of 'truth' and see that the battle is one that should be directed at the rules, operative in our society, according to which 'true' and 'false' representations are separated.' (2).

We should not forget, however, that the photograph as 'true' document made its historical appearance during the days of the

1979. None of the realities of the current socio-economic situation, nor of the specific effects these have on young people, are evident in these photographs. Pejié and Singels have recorded nothing more than the superficial display of life-styles, those most visible aspects of contemporary youth cultures.

Questions of the accuracy of this documentary project are left by the staff of the Rijksmuseum to the judgement of future historians; what matters more for them in determining the value of these pictures is the 'personal vision' expressed by the photographer and the extent to which this ill-defined concept is able to lend a 'zeggingskracht', a power of saying, to the work. Having been removed from history, from specificity, and above all from any say in the discourse imposed upon them, the subjects of this project have been effectively silenced, trapped within the outworn practices of the accepted documentary apparatus. Documentary photographers are often drawn to subjects at the margins of society - gypsies, psychiatrie patients, penitentiary pilgrims, immigrants, youth cults, etc. - because within the terms of the bourgeois hegemony (to which most photographers happen to belong) 'Qersonal vision' these groups represent 'difference' from the norm. The result, unfortunately, is much normal parents, military conscripts uncomcloser to advertising photography than to plainingly undergoing their first day of duty, documentary. holidaymakers having a good time, students decorously partying in evening wear, and so on. Even the couple captioned 'unemployed' are smiling, despite the fact that, as we are told elsewhere in the book, the economie ew s t r a t e g i e s position of Dutch youth has worsened conIf the real cannot be represented except siderably during the last five years. A working by illusion, and if the 'true' somehow always 18 year old today, for example, receives manages to escape us, what strategies are almost 30% less than he would have done in possible now for the 'concerned' photoParis Commune when the police forces took photographs in order to identify, and later convict, revolutionaries. The photographs taken by Riis and Hine were likewise presented as evidence designed, in Walter Benjamin's words, 'to uncover guilt and name the guilty'. Thus the reformist photographer and the police appear to share a common task: to 'identify' abuses and injustices in the name of the just and the true, to reveal that which is hidden, and to bring delinquent or 'marginal' cultures under the surveillance of the 'eye of power', whether that power be disciplinary or benevolently reformist.

The practice and the apparatus of documentary photography are suffused with ideological rules and constraints. Photographers usually know what they want to depict before they find it, they have certain pre-conceptions and stylistic preferences of their own, and they may also have to take into account the views of those providing the assignment.

Are these then the conditions for the production of 'truth'? And whose truth does it become?

Again it is John Tagg who has put forward radical proposals for re-vitalising the 'discredited' documentary tradition: 'We must pinpoint those strategie kinds of intervention which can both open up different social arenas of action and stretch the institutional order of the (photographie) practice by deploying or developing new modes of production, distribution and circulation; by exploiting different formats; by evolving different formal solutions; by cutting different trajectories across the ruling codes of pictorial meaning; and by establishing different relationships both with those who are pictured and those who view the pictures.' (4). These are heavy demands, and so far there seems to be little evidence that documentary photographers are heeding them, preferring instead to rely on traditional practices of representation and photographie discourse. Rarely do we see work that is both oppositional (in social terms) and innovative (in both theory and praxis). Some artists in the United States, Canada, and Britain, however, having observed the discrepancies and failures of modernism, ine lu ding the modernist appropriation and appraisal of photography, are turning to the disruptive strategies of 'postmodernism' in order to 're-invent' documentary. It is no accident that most of these artists are also acute theorists, but it would be misleading to suggest that their work therefore suffers from programmatisation. It should be seen rather as a continuation of the concerns with language and with the deployment of art within a social context that characterised the conceptualist movements beginning in the late 60's.

Martha Rosler's 'The Bowery in Two Inadequate Descriptive Systems' (5) takes as its subject those well-known and muchphotographed bums and winos who inhabit the Bowery district of New York. Not one of them is to be seen in Rosler's photographs however; what we are shown instead are dilapidated shopfronts and littered sidewalks, with only the occasional tracé of the bums existence visible in the form of a discarded bottle. Rosler is clearly intimating that photography is an inadequate system for describing the Bowery. Traditional exposés of social misery use a combination of photography and text, the latter most often in the form of a survey or report. But is this language any more adequate as a descriptive system as long as it remains the language, as well as the system of its dissemination, identified

with capitalism's hegemony over its unfortunate 'victims'? Relinquishing the imposition of both a photographie language and a descriptive language, Rosler alternates her photographs with pages of words: a lexicon of words used to describe the state of being drunk, a 'poetics of drunkenness'. The richness of this language, its playful imagery and metaphors, celebrates the drunks on and in, their own terms, instead of consigning them to the analytical prose of a sociological report or the charitable tones of liberal humanism. Martha Rosler is not offering any panaceas; she is not out to reform, but to challenge preconceptions by dislocating the rules of representation.

tensive commentaries. 'Aerospace Folktales' (1973) deals with his own family background, documenting the results of his father's being made redundant at the Lockheed military/industrial factory. In the original presentation 142 photographs and titles were exhibited, together with a spoken sound track (by the artist's mother and father) and an extensive written commentary by the artist. We see images of the factory (reminding one of Brecht's famous comment that a photograph of the Krupp works reveals nothing of what it means), the family, their house (leased from Lockheed), the books on the effects of atomic war his father once used to study, and we read the personal reactions of the mother and the father to unemployment and to the wider social and political situation, as well as the son/artist's comments on the making of the work. The lack of privilege accorded to these different discourse provides a nonideological, more 'natural' (one is tempted to say 'real') representation of a particular social problem; a documentary in which the subjects are not silenced.

A similar practice informs 'This Ain't China: A Photonovel' (1974) which confronts another 'local' situation: relations between employer and employees at a fast-food restaurant. The work consists of posed photographs of the workers, their environment and their product, together with narratives written by the artist from the differing viewpoints of the protagonists. Sekula describes it as 'a comedy about theatricalized food', a parody of a social-realist novel.

hotography against the grain This is also the aim of Allan Sekula who, like Martha Rosler, is well aware of the need for a photographer and artist (or any other type of worker, for that matter) to be critical-minded, both towards his own practice and towards the society in which he lives. Sekula is one of the very few artists at work in the United States with avowed socialist aims, and whose photographie 'interventions' go a long way towards fulfilling the demands of John Tagg quoted earlier. The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design recently published a collection of Sekula's essays and photoworks, 'Photography against the Grain'. As the title suggests, Sekula's work runs counter to prevailing notions of photographie theory and practice, particularly to 'the formalist closure inherent in the American modernist project' which rests on the aesthetic autonomy of the work of art and its privileged author(ity), at the expense of an awareness of its role with him social practice and social history. Sekula's work is, if you will excuse the pun, adamantly secular, that is, 'concerned with the affairs of this world', as opposed to spiritual.

One of the essays included in the book is the by now almost classic and much-reprinted 'On the Invention of Photographie Meaning' which deals with the complex issue of photographie 'discourse': the extent to which meaning is dependent on, and constrained by, the institutional context within which it is communicated. Contrasting two 'historical' photographs of the same subject - immigrants arriving by ship in New York at the beginning of the century -, one by Lewis Hine and one by Alfred Stieglitz, Sekula effectively demolishes the aesthetic, symbolist pretentions of the latter and argues in favour of the 'realist', committed approach of Hine. The difference is represented by the contexts in which the images originally appeared: Stieglitz's in the luxurious pages of his own magazine 'Camera Work', Hine's in the reformist journal 'Charities and Commons'.

Sekula's own photoworks are often designed to be exhibited in universities, colleges and local libraries, as close as possible to the sites in which they intervene, rather than in art galleries or museums. In his essay 'The Traffic in Photographs', he attacks the isolation and reification of photographs by the museological establishment. In exhibitions such as 'The Family of Man' photographs are divorced from specific social realities and subjected to a ' universalising' humanist ideology which, in the context of the times (the mid-50's, for example), is not without

political implications.

The organiser of that exhibition, Edward Steichen, is also the subject of another of Sekula's essays, 'Steichen at War' which looks into the question of Steichen's aerial reconnaissance photographs taken during the 1st World War. Sekula points out the discrepancy between the myth of Steichen the great artist and the realities of his career.

Allan Sekula's ideas can perhaps be summed up in his statement that 'photography is not an independent or autonomous language system, but depends on larger discursive conditions, invariably including those established by the system of verbal-written language.

Photographie meaning is always a hybrid construction, the outcome of an interplay of iconic, graphic, and narrative conventions.'

'School is a Factory' (1980) is much more didactic in scope as Sekula turns to investigating the educational establishment, in which he himself was working at that time as a teacher of photography in a junior college, where training is mostly for the manual and clerical trades. Extensive captions to posed photographs of students outline the bitter realities of their future employment prospects, while an accompanying essay looks pessimistically at the burgeoning division between creative and corporate culture.

In all his work Allan Sekula violates the conventional separation of tasks which demands that one is either a photographer or a writer, an artist or a critic. He combines all these functions to construct what he calls a 'political geography' of the social systems of which he is much more than a detached observer.

By confronting photography in terms of a materialist social history, Sekula and a few other like-minded artists such as Martha Rosler are opening up ways for documentary photography to be re-evaluated, re-invented, and re-invested with direct social relevance.

De Stichting Nederlands Op 17 november 1985 werd in Perspektief een tentoonstelling geopend die was gewijd aan de Stichting Nederlands FotoArchief. Hieronder een korte beschouwing over de achtergronden en de doeptel lingen van deze stichting.

Negatievenarchieven van twee Nederlandse fotografen.

40 jaar werk opgeborgen in kartonnen dozen op een kleine zolderkamer-vroegere doka-en in envelopjes onderin een lade van het buffet: het negatievenarchief van Cok de Graaff. In totaal bestaat het uit ruim 15.000 negatieven die nauwelijks toegankelijk zijn zoals dat in archieftermen heet; slechts via summiere aantekeningen in kleine schriftjes word je enigszins wegwijs in de talloze opdrachten van bedrijven als Verkade en Van Houten in de jaren '30 en Ahrendt-Globe in de jaren '60. Om je een voorstelling te kunnen maken van het eigenlijke werk ben je vervolgens aangewezen op de afdrukken die de fotograaf nog in zijn bezit heeft want contactvellen zijn er niet. Kortom: de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse reclamefotografie ligt voor een deel opgeslagen in dit archief maar is voorlopig nog onbereikbaar.

De nummering van het negatievenarchief van architectuur- en bedrijfsfotograaf Jaap d'Oliveira loopt tot ergens in de 13.000. De eerste 5000 negatieven zijn echter niet meer in het doorzijn zoon en compagnon Maarten beheerde archief aanwezig: aangevreten en beschadigd door vocht werd het in de jaren '30 gemaakte werk kort na de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de fotograaf zelf vernietigd. Twintig centimeter kaartsysteem, geordend op opdrachtgever en soms voorzien van een jaartal documenteren de doosjes met glas- en celluloidnegatieven uit de jaren na de oorlog, opgestapeld op de planken van zoon Maarten's atelier.

Gebruik van Archieven.

Evenmin als het archief van Cok de Graaff wordt dit archief gebruikt, geraadpleegd, een enkele uitzondering daargelaten.

Zo zocht onlangs een architect in d'Oliveira's archief naar afbeeldingen van zijn werk. Architecten, maar ook meubelfirma's als 't Spectrum en bladen als Forum en Goed Wonen waren d'Oliveira's opdrachtgevers; net als de Graaff's archief bevatten de tientallen dozen visuele documentatie van nog ongeschreven geschiedenis, cultureel erfgoed ligt weg te kwijnen in het stof. Maar niet alleen deze meer 'zakelijke' documentatie, ook beelden van sociale aspecten, reportages van het gewone of minder gewone leven liggen opgeslagen in de archieven van reeds gestorven of bejaarde fotografen. Door de ontoegankelijkheid van de meeste archieven wordt vaak slechts een klein - en bekend - gedeelte van het oeuvre van een fotograaf keer op keer gebruikt om een historische periode of een artistieke ontwikkelinig te illustreren.

Historisch belang.

In hoeveel gevallen wordt op die m m er een historisch beeld eenzijdig en m i s s c A n zelfs onjuist 'gekleurd' en bevestigd? Zo z i B d e onlangs gepubliceerde - lange tijd 'vergeten' kleurenfoto's van Alphons Hustinx op zijn minst een nuancering van ons beeld van de Duitse bezetting, een beeld dat in belangrijke mate is bepaald door foto's van de laatste beze winter, door fotografen die werkten in h der van de 'Ondergedoken Camera': Ca thuys, Emmy Andriesse, Ad Windig e.a.

Hoeveel interessant materiaal ligt onbereikbaar en onder vaak zeer slechte condities opgeslagen in archieven, materiaal dat in documentair, sociaal en cultureel opzicht een brijdrage aan de geschiedenis van deze eeuw kan leveren?

Stichting Nederlands FotoArchief.

Het toegankelijk maken en houden van nega tievenarchieven die dergelijke waarden verte genwoordigen is de belangrijkste doelstellin van de Stichting Nederlands FotoArchief die 1982 werd opgericht. De directe aanleidi hiervoor vormde een onderzoek dat in 1981 op initiatief van de Stichting Maria Austria-arch was verricht naar de archieven van een gr aantal fotografen. Dit onderzoek bracht aan licht dat er inderdaad een schat aan foto fisch materiaal op een goed onderkomen li wachten. De meeste benaderde fotografe ageerden positief: een (toekomstig) Ne lands FotoArchief kon al direct rekenen oj archieven van Maria Austria, Eva Besny de Graaff, Henk Jonker, Aart Klein, Dolf K Jaap d'Oliveira, Kees Pot, Hans Pelgro van Weele, Hans Wolf en Ad Windig. De o ting van de stichting NFA was alleen hier een volstrekt logische stap. Het toega maken en houden van negatievenarchieven houdt uiteraard in dat de te beheren archieven in vele gevallen zowel beschreven, ge誰nventariseerd, als gerestaureerd zullen moe den. Het is overigens niet de bedoelin Nederlands FotoArchief archieven van fotografen aankoopt. Het zal zich beperkjen tot het conserveren en het actief exploiterefean negatievenarchieven. Inkomsten uit hef copyright zullen volgens te maken afspraken terugvloeien naar de fotograaf of de erfgena eerste instantie zal het Nederlands FotoA te maken krijgen met archieven waarva kend is dat ze opgenomen moeten (en kun' worden, zoals de hierboven genoemde. van een archief zal de nadruk liggen op kwaliteit en op het historische of algemene belang van het werk van de fotograaf. Kwaliteit en historisch of algemeen belang zijn nogal precaire begrippen. Daarom is een adviescommissie ingesteld die bestaat uit fotografen, vormgevers en (kunst)historici. Deze commissie zal een advies uit moeten brengen op grond van een evaluatie van de technische en esthetische kwaliteit, de historische dan wel kunsthistorische waarde en het algemeen belang.

Ke ing negative archives and making them accessible naturally means that in many cases the archives to be administered have to b not only described and inventarised, restored. The Nederlands Foto intention, however, of purchasing archives from photographers. It will limit itself to conservation and active exploitation of ne tive archives. To begin with, the NFA will be deafing with archives which they know have to be (and can be) included, such as the ones mentioned above. In addition, there will be offers of until now unknown archives. In selecting an archive the emphasis will lie on quality and on the historical or general significance of the photographer's work. Quality and historical or general significance are of course rather precarious criteria, and so an advisory committee has been set up consisting of ph tographers, designers and (art) histori The committee will have to sed on an evaluation of t tic quality, historical or and general importance.

Functioning of the NFA. Conservation and active exploitation d mean that the NFA will be a stuffy archive or a press agency. It will undoubtedly become active and indispensible for the organisation of exhibitions and the preparation of publications about photography. As such, it will be able to serve as an important promoter of Dutch photography and to show that a visual historiography, with genres and styles, is •öppening in Holland, and which is clearly distinguishable from other visual disciplines.

In this way the NFA will foster appreciation of, and knowledge about, photography, and, along with longer existing institutions such as the Photographie History department of the Printroom in Leiden, clearly show how photography has developed in Holland and who the most important figures were in this development. Furthermore the Archive wants to inform working photographers about possibilities for making their archives available and administering them, and to give more general information about other existing archiv Everyone, from the press to individuals, be able to make use of the NetherlfiMj Archives.

S c h r i j v e r s , b e e l d e n d e k u n s t e n a a r s , a c t e u r s , regisseurs, dansers, choreografen, ontwerpers, kortom, vertegenwoordigers van v e r s c h i l l e n d e k u n s t v o r m e n zullen in het project o p g e n o m e n w o r d e n .

De t e r m ' d u b b e l p o r t r e t ' slaat o p het feit d a t v a n iedere k u n s t e n a a r e e n f o t o p o r t r e t plus e e n literair portret in de v o r m v a n e e n g e d i c h t w o r d t g e m a a k t .

Geen gemakkelijke opgave als men denkt aan problemen als: Hoe moet de relatie tussen beeld en tekst tot stand worden gebracht, welk selectiecriterium leg je aan, en vooral, hoe creëer je een totaalbeeld, oftewel: hoe breng je met fotografische en literaire midelen een verband aan tussen alle afzonderlijke dubbelportretten?

Om met de eerste vraag te beginnen: Blanca en Dalstra gaan ervan uit dat foto en gedicht als twee gelijkwaardige eenheden beschouwd moeten worden, dat wil zeggen: de tekst is geen illustratie bij de foto of omgekeerd. Het bindende element tussen de twee is de inhoud en die behelst een subjectieve indruk van het werk en de persoon van de geportretteerde kunstenaar. De vraag wie van alle Nederlandse kunstenaars in aanmerking komen, hangt samen met de manier waarop de makers werken aan het geheel, het 'verhaal'. Ze zijn uitgegaan van een vrij willekeurige, voorlopige lijst met namen. Deze lijst was niet definitief, omdat er personen aan toegevoegd konden worden en ook geschrapt, afhankelijk van hoe de rode draad in het geheel zich ontwikkelt.

De werkwijze van Blanca/Dalstra is als volgt: Het verhaal, het bindende element tussen alle portretten, ontstaat tijdens het werken aan het project zelf. Het dubbelportret van de ene kunstenaar roept een beeld, een idee op voor de volgende, en zo ontstaat het verhaal. De volgorde van de portretten is dus hierop gebaseerd.

Er is geen helder omschreven selectiecriterium op grond waarvan de kunstenaars worden uitgekozen, maar het zal duidelijk zijn dat je om bepaalde personen gewoon niet heen kunt.

Een vraag als waarom schrijver Chabot wel uitgekozen wordt en noem maar een dwarsstraat, Mulisch niet, wordt niet beantwoord.

Hoe kan het ook anders, over smaak en importantie valt nauwelijks te twisten, het blijft een subjectieve keuze van Blanca en Dalstra, de toevalsfactor is daardoor groot. Startpunt van het project is het portret van de Amsterdamse kunstenaar Peter Giele, de stuwende kracht achter diverse initiatieven, waaronder de kunstenaarswerkplaats Aorta in Amsterdam. Op het fotoportret staat hij afgebeeld als een oerkracht met een hamer. Uit het begeleidende gedicht begrijpen we waarom: Giele wordt vergeleken met de god Vulcanus uit de Romeinse mythologie: de smid die de werktuigen smeedt, hij zorgt ervoor dat het materiaal voorhanden is. De link met de persoon Peter Giele is duidelijk: Hij is de man die de ruimte en mogelijkheden schept voor andere kunstenaars, nu is de weg vrij voor de overige 39. Zij vormen. 'De

doelgroep' in het gedicht 'Western Hammer', en krijgen een dringend verzoek mee: de waarheid moet gevolgd worden, de leugen moet 'omgekeerd worden' tot waarheid.

Nummer twee in de serie is de Japanse schilder/ontwerper Tetsu. Hij woont en werkt nog nietzo lang in 'het westen', hij bevindt zich, zoals de titel van het gedicht zegt, 'Aan de rand van het woud'. Het woud als symbool voor de plaats waar de kunstgoden zich bevinden. Mede door het op de foto afgebeelde gebladerte, kan Tetsu geassocieerd worden met de bosgod Pan. Op deze manier wordt het verhaal opgebouwd, de associatie bepaalt het verloop. Niet gemakkelijk te volgen voor eenvoudige stervelingen en andere geïnteresseerden, en dat geldt met name voor de gedichten. Dalstra geeft een uiterst persoonlijke indruk weer van de desbetreffende kunstenaar, boordevol metaforen die niet voor zichzelf spreken en daardoor het geheim blijven van de auteur.

Voor de foto's van Paul Blanca geldt dit niet.

Tekst en foto vormen volgens het uitgangspunt één geheel, maar de foto's kunnen wel zonder gedichten, terwijl dat voor deze laatste niet opgaat. Ook de fotoportretten geven en persoonlijke visie op de kunstenaar, maar zij stij-

gen daar tegelijkertijd boven uit. De kunstenaar wordt door Blanca heel nadrukkelijk in een bepaalde context geplaatst. Niet gewoon in zijn werkomgeving, maar hij wordt omringd door elementen die Blanca associeert met zijn karakter en werk. Deze elementen zijn archetypisch, dat wil zeggen, ze hebben een voor ieder mens herkenbare geladenheid, en niet alleen voor Paul Blanca zelf. Gérald Van Der Kaap in een decadente hermelijnen koningsmantel, Peter van der Klashorst slapend onder het silhouet van het vrijheidsbeeld, Harold Vlught in een lijst van vuur, Hans van Manen, gekleed, tegen een achtergrond van vier naakte dansers: allemaal elementen die direct tot de verbeelding spreken. Door het gebruik van door hun eenvoud minimale, door hun geladenheid, krachtige beelden en een strakke, vaak symmetrische compositie, krijgen de fotoportretten een voor zichzelf sprekende waarde, die weer genuanceerd wordt door de poëtische mist die door de tekst om de geportretteerde heen wordt opgetrokken. Een intrigerend samenspel.

This is no easy exercise when one considers such problems as how should the relationship between text and image be achieved, what seleciton criteria do you apply, and above all, how do you create a total picture, or rather, by using photographie and literary means, how do you establish a connection between all the separate doublé portraits?

To begin with the first question, Blanca and Dalstra assume that photograph and poem should be considered as two units of equal value, that is to say, the text is not an illustration of the photograph, nor vice versa. The element that binds the two is the content, and

this involves a subjective impression of the work and character of the depicted artist.

The question of who from all Dutch artists are eligible is connected with the way the makers are working on the total project, the 'story'.

They starled with a fairly arbitrary, provisional list of names. This list was not definitive since people could be added or scrapped depending on how the thread developed within the whole. Blanca and Dalstra work in the following way: The story, the element connecting all the clements, is generated during the work on the project itself. The doublé portrait of one artist evokes an image, an idea,

for the next one, and thus the story develops.

On this, then, is based the sequence of the portraits.

The selection criterium used for choosing the artist is not clearly defined, but it is obvious that certain people cannot be disregarded. A question like why select the writer Chabot and not Mulisch, say, is unanswered. How could it be otherwise since it's hardly worth quibbling about taste and importance, and so it remains Blanca and Dalstra's subjective choice, which makes the random factor all the greater. The project began with the portrait of the Amsterdam artist Peter Giele, the driving force behind various initiatives, among them the artists' workplace Aorta, in Amsterdam.

In the photo portrait he is depicted as a primitive force with a hammer. The accompanying poem tells us why: Giele is compared with the god Vulcan from Roman mythology, the smith who forges tools, taking care that the materials are available. The link with the personality of Peter Giele is obvious. He is the man who creates spaces and possibilities for other artists. Now the way is open for the other 39, referred to as the 'target group' in the poem 'Western Hammer', who are urgently exhorted to pursue the truth, to 'convert' falsehood into truth.

Second in the series is the Japanese painter and designer Tetsu. He has not been living and working in 'the west' for so very long and finds himself, as the title of the poem says, 'At the edge of the forest', the forest symbolising the place where the gods of art are. Partly through the foliage depicted in the photograph Tetsu can be identified with the sylvan deity Pan. In this way the story is built up, its progress determined by association. Ordinary mortals or anyone else who is interested will not find it easy to follow, and that is especially true of the poems. Dalstra gives an extremely personal impression of the artist in question, replete with metaphors which do not speak for themselves but remain the author's secret.

This is not the case with Paul Blanca's photographs. In principle the text and the photograph are meant to form a single whole, but the photographs could well exist without the poems, while that doesn't hold good for the latter. The photo portraits also give a personal view of the artist, but at the same time they surpass it. Blanca emphatically places the artist in a specific context, not simply in his working environment, but surrounded by elements which Blanca associates with his character and work. These are archetypal elements, that is to say, they are charged in ways that everyone can recognise, and not just Blanca himself. GĂŠrald Van Der Kaap in a decadent ermine mantle, Peter van der Klashorst sleeping under the silhouette of the Statue of Liberty, Harold Vlught in a frame of fire, Hans van Manen, clothed, against a background of four naked dancers; all these powerful elements appeal directly to the imagination.

Through the use of images that are minimal in their simplicity and powerful in their connotations, and a taut, often symmetrical composition, the photo portraits achieve a value that speaks for itself, and which is further nuanced by the poetic mist drawn up around the subjects of the portraits by the text. An intriguing interplay.

'Om portretten te maken moet je eigenlijk een autoritaire clown zijn.

De mensen die ik fotografeer moeten ontspannen zijn maar wel precies doen wat ik wil.' borgen. Ook in de serie 'Faust and Garden' speelt zij visueel maar ook op taalniveau met deze betekenis. Net als haar vol zelfspot gekozen pseudoniem verraden haar titels steeds haar liefde voor de absurde en associatieve kant van haar tweede moedertaal, het Engels. De titel refereert in dit geval aan een Canadees tijdschrift, House and Garden, dat de perfecte antipode van haar gevoelens over de natuur visualiseert en tot bloedeloos voorschrift maakt.

In de serie 'Portraits of three Great Nations: Disorientals, Accidentals and Ornamentals' de oudste van de serie 'Evolution, Advance, Change' die Chick Rice onlangs in Perspektief liet zien- staan en zitten jonge mensen tegeneen achtergrond van wit papier. Door hun nadrukkelijke poses en het natuurlijke maar zeer uitgekiende licht zijn ze vooral mooi, deze kunstenaars, dansers en musici, mooi, trots en zelfbewust. Zoals vroegere koningen hun reeksen beroemde schoonheden lieten schilderen lijkt Chick Rice door haar wijze van fotograferen een portretgalerij van geïdealiseerde jeugd te willen presenteren. Ook door hun zeer formele, esthetische opbouw veel diagonalen- hebben de portretten iets 'klassieks'. De glamour ligt er alleen net iets te dik bovenop en de - onvertaalbare - titel plaatst de portretten in een toneelmatig vacuüm: de Disorientals, Accidentals and Ornamentals zijn niets meer en niets minder dan een bewuste projectie van de dromen en gevoelens van de fotografe zelf. Volgens haar eigen zeggen wilde zij met deze portretten haar bewondering voor de zelfbewuste, doelgerichte levenswijze van deze jonge mensen duidelijk maken.

De pseudo-portretgalerij behoort daarmee tot het domein van de autobiografie, tot visueel leven gebracht dankzij de strakke regie van de fotografe. leder portret zegt net zoveel over de maker als over de geportretteerde. In deze serie, maar ook in 'Living Proof' en in 'Faust and Garden' lijkt Chick op lichtvoetige wijze met dit uitgangspunt te spelen. De vorm die zij kiest varieert van de klassieke, formele opbouw in de Three Great Nations tot de schijnbaar dramatische portretfragmenten in 'Faust and Garden', vooral in 'Living Proof' met een forse knipoog naar zogenaamde fotografische conventies. Als zoveel eigentijdse kunstenaars blijkt Chick Rice dan ook niet zozeer op zoek naar een fundamentele vernieuwing van beeldtaal maar levert zij met haar werk veel meer een nu eens intellectueel, dan weer humoristisch en associatief commentaar op bestaande beeldtradities en inhouden.

In 'Living Proof' krijgt het autobiografische element in de portretten een veel persoonlijker vorm. De serie bestaat uit silhouetten van mensen en planten, fotogrammen waarin de slingerende vegetatieve vormen uit hoofden lijken te groeien en ze omstrengelen door hun weelderige groei. Voor Chick Rice symboliseren planten veiligheid en roepen bepaalde planten associaties met bekende en geliefde mensen op. Deze persoonlijke connotatie komt voort uit jeugdherinneringen uit Macao: haar Chinese grootmoeder droeg haar als klein meisje na een forse regenbui op de rug door de tropische natuur: veilig, warm en ge-

Terwijl in 'Living Proof' silhouet en plantaardige vorm tot een soort decoratief geheel worden, brengt Chick Rice in 'Faust and Garden' sterke accenten door het gebruik van een extreem 'clair obscur' en wisselende standpunten fragmenten van gezichten en planten op een nogal dramatische manier.

Deze serie prikkelt de fantasie het meest en zet suggestieve vraagtekens bij het identiteitskarakter van portretfotografie.

Voor Chick is het belangrijkste dat zij als fotografe onsterfelijkheid schenkt aan de geportretteerden. Haar rol is een soort parodie op die van Mephistofeles; Faust and Garden een humoristisch drama vol ironie, een intelligent gefotografeerd melodrama.

Hoezeer zij ironie niet alleen tot onderdeel van haar werk maar tot een ware levenshouding heeft gemaakt blijkt ondubbelzinnig uit haar autobiografisch statement: Chick Rice, born in Macao in 1954, moved to Canada a few years later where she was raised and educated. Currently maintains a studio in Vancouver where she lives with a hamster and enjoys eating pork and beans cold, right out of the can.

In the series 'Portraits of Three Great Nations: Disorientals, Accidentals and Ornamentals' - the oldest of the 'Evolution, Advance, Change' series that Chick Rice recently showed in Perspektief - young people are sitting and standing against a white paper background. Because of their pointed poses and the natural but very sophisticated light, they are especially beautiful, these artists, dancers and musicians; beautiful, proud and self-assured. Just as the kings of old used to have series of famous beauties painted for them, Chick Rice, through her manner of photographing, seems to want to present a portrait gallery of idealised youth. With their very formal, aesthetic construction - a lot of diagonals - these portraits also have some-

thing 'classical' about them. The glamour is laid on just that bit too heavily, while the title places the portraits in a stage-like vacuüm.

The Disorientals, Accidentals and Ornamentals are nothing more nor less than a conscious projection of the dreams and feelings of the photographer herself. In her own words, she wanted these portraits to clearly show her admiration for these youngsters' self-confident, goal-directed lifestyle. It is to the realm of autobiography, then, that the pseudo portrait gallery belongs, brought visually to life thanks to the photographer's tight direction.

Each portrait says as much about the maker as about the person portrayed. In this series, and also in 'Living Proof' and in 'Faust and Garden', Chick seems to play nimbly with this premise. Her chosen form ranges from the classical, formal construction in 'Three Great Nations' to the seemingly dramatic portrait fragments in 'Faust and Garden'. Particularly in 'Living Proof' there is a strong wink at socalled photographie conventions. Like many contemporary artists Chick Rice appears to be not so much searching for a fundamental renewal of visual language as using her work much more to make a commentary, at once intellectual and there again humorous and associative, on existing visual traditions and contents.

In 'Living Proof' the autobiographical element in the portraits acquires a more personal form. The series consists of silhouttes of people and plants, photograms in which the dangling vegetative forms seem to be growing from the heads, winding about them with their luxurious growth. For Chick Rice plants symbolise security and certain plants recall associations with known and beloved people.

This personal connotation sterns from

memories of her childhood in Macao: as a small girl she used to be carried on her Chinese grandmother's back through the tropical nature after a heavy rainstorm: safe, warm and secure.

She also plays with this significance visually as well as on the level of language in the series 'Faust and Garden'. Like her mockingly chosen pseudonym her titles continually betray her love for the absurd and associative side of her adopted language, English. In this case the title refers to a Canadian magazine, House and Garden, which epitomises the perferct antithesis of her feelings about nature, turning them into bloodless precepts. While in 'Living Proof' silhouette and plant forms become a kind of decorative unity, in 'Faust and Garden' Chick Rice applies strong accents by using an extreme chiaroscuro and changing camera positions, lending a fairly dramatic tone to the fragments of faces and plants. This series stimulates the fantasy the most and suggestively questions the specific character of portrait photography. The most important thing for Chick is that as a photographer she can grant immortality to those portrayed. Her role is a sort of parody of that of Mephistofeles; 'Faust and Garden' as a humorous drama full of irony, an intelligently photographed melodrama.

The extent to which she has made irony not just a part of her work but a genuine attitude to life is unequivocally clear from her autobiographical statement: Chick Rice, born in Macao in 1954, moved to Canada a few years later where she was raised and educated.

Currently maintains a studio in Vancouver where she lives with a hamster and enjoys eating pork and beans cold, right out of the can.

vuur het karakter van de fotografie als momentopname lijken te bevestigen.

Waar in de eerdere foto's de thematiek oppervlakkig beschouwd sterk deed denken aan die van familiekiekjes en vakantiefoto's, blijken steeds meer elementen in de latere foto's minder direct herkenbare connotaties op te roepen. Zie bijvoorbeeld de ontwikkeling van de 'Driekoningenmaaltijd' naar de 'brandende' kamer.

In de 'Driekoningenmaaltijd' is de thematiek schijnbaar zo expliciet dat de associatie met een jeugdmoment haast onontkoombaar is.

Deze foto lijkt bijna in een kinderlijk '...en toen'-verhaal te passen. Maar door de houdingen van poppen en kind overstijgt dit beeld op een zeer elementair niveau ook reeds het herinneringskiekje.

'La chambre qui brüle' roept geen enkele associatie meer op met het familiealbum. Terwijl Barthes in La Chambre Claire lang moest zoeken naar het voor hem meest volkomen beeld van zijn moeder, lijkt Faucon de waarde van een foto als realistische herinnering actief te reconstrueren.

Een peuk die een moment vasthoudt en wellicht ook de herinnering aan de man die hem gaf: Roland Barthes. Is het toeval dat dezelfde Roland Barthes in zijn boek 'La Chambre Claire' ook een tastbare herinnering zoekt?

Een foto die de meest perfecte analogie van zijn herinnering aan zijn moeder geeft.

Uiteindelijk vindt hij die herinnering belichaamd in een beeld van zijn moeder als meisje van vijf jaar: "De enige foto die mij een gevoel gaf dat net zo zeker was als de herinnering." Een foto waaruit haar goedheid sprak.

Het bleek niet eenvoudig die foto te vinden en daarmee wordt onmiddellijk een van de paradoxen van de fotografie duidelijk: foto's worden juist vaak gemaakt om iets voor later vast te leggen, om 'tastbare' visuele voorwerpen te zijn die een herinnering kunnen oproepen maar blijkbaar kunnen zij daarin falen.

Voor Barthes betekende dit het conflict tussen het 'ga- a- été' aspect van een foto en de moeilijkheid om de herinnering belichaamd te zien in een opname.

Een foto blijkt net zo fragmentarisch te zijn als een peuk, een volkomen beeld geven van een herinnering kan zij niet. Logisch, daar bij de herinnering niet alleen visuele aspecten, maar ook andere zintuiglijke waarnemingen en emoties de ervaring van een moment bepalen.

Toch kan een detail in een foto wel degelijk via associaties een herinnering oproepen. De foto's van Bernard Faucon lijken op visuele herinneringen, in de vorm van reconstructies van geladen momenten uit zijn jeugd.

Zijn in 1980 uitgekomen boek 'Les Grandes Vacances' begint met dagboekaantekeningen, korte biografische notities met een sterk accent op emotionele hoogtepunten en dieptepunten uit zijn jeugd. Deze aantekeningen lijken een persoonlijke aanvulling op de beelden te geven.

Betekent dit dat Faucon aan het beeld als zodanig een geringe herinneringswaarde toekent, of stelt hij twee benaderingen van de herinnering naast elkaar? De verhalen die de

lezer op emotioneel niveau binnenvoeren in de obsessies van een eenzame jongen in de Provence en de visuele benadering die in één - weliswaar weloverwogen - geconstrueerd beeld een zowel beperktere als algemenere betekenis geeft.

De herinneringsproblematiek staat als motief ongetwijfeld centraal in het werk van Faucon.

In eerste instantie lijken de foto's in 'Les Grandes Vacances' op kleurrijke jeugdbeelden van een nostalgisch fotograaf.

Jongenspoppen spelen de hoofdrol in tableaux vivants die soms een ritueel karakter hebben: zoals 'Het Ontbijt', 'Driekoningenmaaltijd', 'De Druiven'. In andere beelden overheersen de overvloed en de natuur van de zonnige Provence zoals bijvoorbeeld 'De Kersenpluk'.

'A cigarette butt given to me by Roland Barthes in the Rue Servandoni on March 6th 1978. The photographer Bernard Faucon preserves it in an envelope together with other material mementos as 'a tangible tracé of a not particularly special moment, but tangible like a beacon in time'.

Bij nadere beschouwing krijgt echter een wrang gevoel bij de kijker de overhand. De opnamen blijken de eenzaamheid te tonen van een kind, het gevoel buitengesloten te worden door een groep leeftijdsgenoten die soms zelfs haast sadistische spelletjes opvoeren.

In de periode 1978 - 1980 plaatste Faucon niet-levende wezens, star glimlachende mannelijke etalagepoppen in uitgekiende opstellingen in interieurs en landschappen, voegde daar een vervreemdend licht aan toe en construeerde op die manier als het ware zogenaamde bewijsstukken.

Door de incongruente beeldelementen ontkrachten de foto's echter het 'ga-a-été' volkomen.

The butt keeps hold of a moment and perhaps also of the memory of the man who gave it to him, Roland Barthes. Is it a coincidence that the same Roland Barthes, in his book 'La Chambre Claire', also searches for a tangible memory? A photograph providing the most perfect analogy of his memory of his mother.

Ultimately he discovers this memory embodied in a picture of his mother at the age of five: The only photograph to give me a feeling as sure as that of the memory.' A photograph expressing her goodness.

It was apparently no easy matter to find this photograph, and immediately one of the paradoxes of photography becomes clear: photographs are often made for the purpose of recording something for later, to be 'tangible' visual objects capable of evoking memories, but in this they often fail.

For Barthes this represented the conflict between the 'ga-a-été' aspect of a photograph and the difficulty of seeing the memory incarnated in an exposure.

In de loop van de tijd is in het gebruik van die elementen een duidelijke verschuiving te zien. In het begin gebruikte hij vaak grote groepen poppen in contrast met een levend jongetje. A photograph is seemingly just as fragmentary as a cigarette butt, being unable to provide a complete picture of a memory. This is logical since not only visual aspects but also other sensory perceptions and emotions determine the experience of a moment. Yet a detail in a photograph can in fact call up a memory by way of associations. Bernard Faucon's photographs look like visual memories, in the form of reconstructions of charged moments from his youth.

His book 'Les Grandes Vacances', which

came out in 1980, opens with diary jottings, short biographical notes with a strong emphasis on various emotional highs and lows from the time of his youth. These notes provide a personal supplement to the pictures.

Does this mean that Faucon attachés little recollection value to the image as such, or is he juxtaposing two approximations of the memory? On an emotional level the narrative conveys the reader into the obsessions of a lonely boy in Provence, while the visual, clearly a well worked-out staged picture, provides both a more limited and more general meaning.

The problem of memory is undoubtedly the central motif in Faucon's work.

At first sight the photographs in 'Les Grandes Vacances' look like a nostalgie photographer's colourful images of youth. Boy dolls play the main roles in tableaux-vivants which sometimes have a ritualistic character, as in 'The Breakfast', 'Twelfth-Night Meal', The Grapes'. Other pictures, such as 'Picking Cherries', are dominated by the abundant nature of sunny Provence.

On closer inspection a sensation of sourness comes over the viewer. The exposures seem to display a child's loneliness, to evoke the feeling of being excluded by a group of fellow youngsters, sometimes even to visualise games that are almost sadistic. Between 1978 and 1980 Faucon would place inanimate beings, fixedly smiling male shop-window dummies, in particular formations in interiors and landscapes, adding an alienating light, and in this way construct pseudo-documentary evidence as it were.

Because of the incongruously juxtaposed

visual elements the 'ga-a-été' of the photographs is completely enervated. Over the years a clear shift can be seen in the use of these elements. In the beginning he would often employ large groups of dolls in contrast with a live boy.

In 'La neige qui brüle' a last doll stands half in view at the right edge of the picture, symbolizing the departure. It portrays the boundary between presence and absence.

Instead come empty landscapes and interiors where large balls of magnesium fire seem to confirm the character of photography as a record of an instant.

Whereas the theme of the earlier photographs was superficially reminiscent of family snaps and holiday photos, more and more elements in the late works seem to evoke less immediately recognizable connotations.

See for example the development from 'The Twelfth-Night Meal' to the 'burning' room. In 'The Twelfth-Night Meal' the theme is ostensibly so explicit that the association with a moment of youth is virtually inescapable. The photograph almost seems to suit a childish '...and then' story. But the attitudes of the dolls and the child already cause the picture to exceed, at a very elementary level, the remembrance snap.

In 'La chambre qui brüle' there is no longer any association with the family album. While Barthes had to search for a long time in La Chambre Claire for the most complete image of his mother, Faucon is busy actively reconstructing the value of a photograph as realistic reminiscence.

Met dit stukje poëzie opent Rudi Fuchs, als hij het tenminste is die schuilgaat achter de initialen R.H.F., de catalogus van de door het Eindhovense Van Abbe Museum samengestelde overzichtstentoonstelling van de Brit Hamish Fulton.

Over de literaire kwaliteit van Fuchs' schrijvende arbeid w i l ik me geen oordeel aanmatigen, een analyse van de boodschap is echter de moeite waard.

Waarom dan wel?

Het werk van Hamish Fulton wordt algemeen tot de conceptuele kunst gerekend.

Wij worden dus geacht het werk - grote zwart-wit foto's in zware eikehouten lijsten - niet zozeer op de beeldende merites te beoordelen maar op de achterliggende idee. ' M y artform is the short journey made by walking in the landscape' vermeldt het titelblad van de catalogus als het credo van de kunstenaar. ' N o walk, no work', luidt het ergens anders.

Fultons achterliggende filosofie wordt duidelijk in een, eveneens in de catalogus opgenomen, stuk van Michael Auping: 'In Fulton's art walking is presented as one of the most basic dialogues one can have with nature, a dialogue not coincidentally central to the nomadic peoples who have helped inspire his art.

Fulton does not approach nature as "landscape", in the traditional sense of a still image, but as a physical experience.'

Prachtig, op grond hiervan zijn de beelden dus niet meer dan verwijzingen, in ieder geval geen autonome kunstwerken.

Zo w i l de kunstwereld het tenminste en Fulton is de laatste om dat te weerspreken, waarom zou hij ook? Het beeldende kunstcircuit biedt nu eenmaal na uiteindelijke canonisatie van het werk nog altijd beduidend betere toekomstkansen.

Maar verschilt Fultons werkwijze w e l zo sterk van die van fotografen wier werk eveneens veeleer het resultaat is van mentale processen dan van een simpele 'inbezitname' van de wereld? Denk bij-

voorbeeld maar eens aan Minor White die Zen-filosofie integreerde in zijn benadering van 'de dingen' maar ook aan August Sander, om het in een heel andere sfeer te zoeken. Sander die heel duidelijk een stramien in zijn kop had zitten dat hij gaandeweg ontwikkelde en waarover hij zich tevens bij gelegenheid uitsprak. Conceptuele kunst of hele goede fotografie?

Fotografie als vorm van kunst dus, waarbij het eindprodukt het kunstwerk vormt en wordt beoordeeld op de mate waarin het mededelingen doet over de achterliggende idee van de maker. Daartoe moet het dus een 'goede' foto zijn Wat nu als we, duidelijk tegen zijn zin, Hamish Fultons fotowerken aan deze beoordeling van de visueel-communicatieve eigenschappen onderwerpen? Niets aan de hand, het zijn foto's die prima in staat zijn iets wezenlijks van Fultons filosofie over te dragen. De bijbehorende teksten versterken het contemplatieve karakter van de beelden en benadrukken het feit dat de beelden geen bijzonder moment of zomaar een buitengewone plek pogen weer te geven maar dat zij een verwijzing zijn naar de landschapsbeleving van de maker. Net zoals de foto's van Minor White verwijzen naar diens levenshouding of die van Sander naar zijn sociaal bewustzijn.

Ik zie Fulton dan ook als een uitstekend fotograaf en kunstenaar. Zijn in esthetische zin pretentieloze foto's zijn verfrissend te noemen, doodgegooid als w e momenteel worden met een hoop formalistische onzin en al te modieuze neoexpressieve ellende. Denk maar eens aan ontspoorde visualisme-adepten en 'staged photo' epigonen.

Nu terug naar Fuchs, getuige zijn tekst een groot bewonderaar van Fulton. Opmerkelijk genoeg heeft hij het in zijn inleidende ontboezeming heel nadrukkelijk over de beelden, 'the images' van Fulton als hij het lidwoord 'they' herhaalde malen gebruikt in de eerste zinnen. Dat is dus eigenlijk buitengewoon vreemd in relatie tot de geldende opinie over wat nu bij Fulton het kunstwerk genoemd dient te worden.

Fuchs' opvatting lijkt duidelijk. De door hem geconcipieerde catalogus doet dan ook alle recht aan de fotowerken van

This little piece of poetry by Rudi Fuchs, at least if that's who it is hiding behind the initials R.H.F.. opens the catalogue for the retrospective exhibition of the British artist Hamish Fulton organized by the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven. I would not want to presume to give an opinion about the literary quality of Fuchs' work as a writer, but an analysis of its message is nevertheless worthwhile. Why is this?

Hamish Fulton's work is generally considered as conceptual art. We are therefore supposed to judge the work - large black and white photographs in heavy oak frames - not so much on its visual merits as on the idea behind it. 'My artform is the short journey made by walking in the landscape' it says on the titlepage as the artist's credo. 'No walk, no work' is the way it is put elsewhere.

Fulton's underlying philosophy becomes clear in an article in the catalogue by Michael Auping: 'In Fulton's art walking is presented as one of the most basic dialogues one can have with nature, a dialogue not coincidentally central to the nomadic peoples who have helped inspire his art. Fulton does not approach nature as 'landscape', in the traditional sense of a still image, but as a physical experience.'

What if, obviously contrary to his wishes, we subject Hamish Fulton's photo works to this assessment of visual and communicatie qualities? No problem, the photographs are well able to convey something of the essence of Fulton's philosophy. The accompanying texts intensify the contemplative character of the pictures and emphasize the fact that they make no attempt to render a special moment or even an exceptional place, but refer to Fulton's experience of the landscape. Just as Minor White 's photographs refer to his attitude to life, or Sander's to his social awareness.

I regard Fulton as an excellent photographer and artist. His photographs, unpretentious in an aesthetic sense, can be called refreshing, assaulted as we are at present by so much formallist nonsense and all-too-fashionable neo-expressive wretchedness, not to mention mistaken adepts of visualism and second-generation 'staged photo' exponents.

Back now to Fuchs who, judging from his text, is a great admirer of Fulton. Remarkably enough, his introductory effusion deals expressly with Fultons images when he repeatedly uses the article 'they' in the first sentences. This is quite odd in fact, considering the prevailing opinion about what, in Fulton's case, is

supposed to be termed the artwork.

Fuchs' view seems clear. The catalogue he has conceived does full justice to Fulton's photo works. All of them are reproduced in a reasonable format with a particularly calm, classical lay-out that underlines the value of each separate picture. Moreover, the printing is firstrate; never before has a book in the Netherlands been printed in duo-tone so perfectly. In the meantime 'Camp fire' stands on my shelf among the photo books. American Images De Amerikaanse fotografie en fotocultuur zijn van grote invloed (geweest) op het kijken naar en omgaan met fotografie.

Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus. Ralph Gibson, Duane Michals: het zijn namen met een internationale betekenis. En niet alleen in Nederland wordt met enige afgunst gekeken naar de gevestigde positie van de fotografie als kunst, naar de universitaire opleidingen in 'het vak', naar de aandacht van de musea en de galerieën. Om nog maar te zwijgen van de prijzen die verzamelaars bereid zijn te betalen. Zoals Japan bijna synoniem is met camera, is Amerika dat met fotografie.

In mei van dit jaar organiseerde de FJarbican Art Gallery in het kader van het American Festival een monumentale overzichtstentoonstelling van na-oorlogse Amerikaanse fotografie onder de titel American Images. Penguin publiceerde de bijbehorende catalogus, een boekwerk even lijvig als de tentoonstelling, dat de pretenties van een overzicht evenwel maar moeilijk waar kan maken.

Een man blaast op een tuba, een ingenieus systeem van pijpjes en ventielen dat half zo groot is als hijzelf. Als je het gevaarte ziet weet je - de man blaast zijn wangen tot ballonnen om te kunnen spelen. Maar zijn wangen zie je niet, terwijl zijn vingers lijken te verdwijnen tussen de pijpen. Zijn gezicht gaat geheel schuil achter het geweldige opengebogen uiteinde van het gevaarte. Eigenlijk zie je nauwelijks iets - maar je hoort de

zware basdreun en daarachter de fanfare. Het was in Chicago, 1956. tijdens een politieke bijeenkomst. De foto werd gemaakt door Robert Frank.

Dertien jaar later demonstreerden bouwvakkers in N e w York; een gigantisch pandemonium met vlaggen, toeters en schreeuwende mensen ieder met hetzelfde doel voor ogen maar pratend en kijkend en lopend in een andere richting.

Natuurlijk is de pers aanwezig en zoekt met microfoon en camera de grootste opengesperde mond. Op dat moment drukte Gary Winogrand af; een chaotisch beeld dat op merkwaardige wijze volledig in evenwicht lijkt. Zo'n beeld dat je weer doet geloven in het toeval. Dat geldt ook voor het netjes uit de heup geschoten portret van een ongetwijfeld volumineuze dame gekleed in een bontjas en een witte hoed met voile rond het onnatuurlijk gepleisterde gezicht. Diane Arbus fotografeerde haar in 1968 op Fifth Avenue, misschien w e l op dezelfde straathoek waar enkele jaren later Joel Meyerowitz een wat kalende, oudere man over straat zag rennen, knip, alweer Amerika, alweer een Amerikaanse foto.

Vier foto's stuk voor stuk een waar visueel genoegen en stuk voor stuk gemaakt door Amerikaanse fotografen. Maar wat zeggen de foto's eigenlijk over de Amerikaanse fotografie? Wat maakt deze foto's eigenlijk Amerikaans?' Waarom lijken de foto's van Frank uit dezelfde periode afkomstig te zijn als die van Meyerowitz terwijl er toch zo'n 20 jaar tussen ligt? Waarom hoort het werk van Frank thuis in de jaren '50 en dat van Winogard en Arbus in de jaren '60?

Het zijn vragen die je stelt bij het lezen van een overzichtswerk. Vragen waarvan je verwacht dat een antwoord zich ook uit de presentatie van de foto's laat afleiden. Niets is evenwel minder waar: aan iedere fotograaf zijn één of meer volbedrukte pagina's gewijd en dat 82 keer achter elkaar gepresenteerd langs een liniaal die bestaat uit decennia die elkaar keurig netjes opvolgen - dat doen decennia nu eenmaal. Kenmerkende stijlen, stromingen, veranderingen, ontwikkeling.

Het verdwijnt allemaal in een houterige inhoudsloze presentatie.

het laat slechts een klein beetje zien van wat, wanneer door w i e gemaakt werd zonder dat de 'Amerikaanse fotografie' inzichtelijk wordt. En w i e zich in arren moede dan maar wendt tot de vier opgenomen teksten komt ook daar bedrogen uit. Van humanisme tot formalisme, zo typeert Gerry Badger de ontwikkeling in de naoorlogse fotografie, een gedachte die de rode draad van het boek schijnt te moeten vormen en die ook door Bill Jay wordt behandeld zij het met een wat andersluidende strekking. De humanistische fotografie aldus Badger, wordt getypeerd door de gedachte dat een foto getuigenis af moet leggen, moet informeren en als het even kan uiteindelijk veranderingen teweeg moet brengen. In de formalistische fotografie daarentegen gaat het om de esthetiek, de spanning tussen het gefotografeerde object en het resulterende beeld, om het gevoel en de innerlijke roerselen van fotograaf en kijker.

Tot de eerstgenoemde 'stroming' rekent Badger de documentaire fotografie en de fotojournalistiek, tot het formalisme alles wat niet tot de humanistische fotografie hoort. Het klinkt eenvoudig en begrijpelijk - alleen zegt het bitter weinig. Vooral niet als de etikettenplakkerij wordt vergezeld van een stofwolk vol begrippen als 'structureel formalisme' 'expressief formalisme' 'abstract formalisme' of 'experimenteel formalisme'.

Begrijpelijk en veelzeggend zijn de artikelen van Jonathan Green (die schrijft over de kritische ontvangst van het tijdschrift Aperture en het boek The Americans) en Lewis Baltz, die de achtergronden van de explosieve groei van de Amerikaanse fotografie in de jaren '70 behandelt. Vooral het laatstgenoemde stuk is aardig al was het alleen maar omdat de door hem aangevoerde oorzaken voor menigeen een desillusie zullen betekenen: de vele miljoenen dollars waarmee Nixon zijn critici wilde afkopen, de nieuwe musea die zochten naar vooral goedkope en gemakkelijke tentoonstellingen, het art establishment dat wanhopig zocht naar 'Iets Nieuws' en (natuurlijk, zegt Baltz) het feit dat het bij fotografie nog steeds gaat om 'dingen' die je kunt kopen en verkopen.

het te veel opgehangen aan een tentoonstelling die zo maar werk liet zien van Amerikaanse fotografen. In de huidige vorm is het misschien nog het best te omschrijven als een naslagwerkje waarin iedere naam aan een plaatje te verbinden is. En zoiets is, eerlijk toegegeven, natuurlijk nooit weg voor de echte geïnteresseerde in de 'Amerikaanse fotografie' whatever that may be.

Eddie Marsman American images American photography and photographie culture have had a great influence on the way photography is looked at and dealt with. Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Ralph Gibson and Duane Michals are internationally known names. In Holland, as elsewhere, people look enviously to the established status of photography as art, to the university level of training, to the attention paid bij museums and galleries, not to mention the prices that collectors are prepared to pay. Just as Japan is virtually synonymous with cameras, so is America with photography.

Last May the Barbican Art Gallery organised as part of its American Festival a huge survey exhibition of post-war American Images. The catalogue published by Penquin books, is as voluminous as the exhibiton, but has just as much difficulty living up to the pretension of an overview.

A man is playing a tuba, an ingenious system of tubes and valves half the size of himself. Looking at this enormous contraption you know that the man has to blow out his cheeks like balloons in order to be able to play it. But you don't see his cheeks, and his fingers seem to disappear among the tubes. His face is completely bidden behind the instrument's massive opening. Actually you hardly see anything - but you hear the heavy booming bass and the fanfare behind it. It was in Chicago, 1956, during a political rally.

The photograph was made by Robert Frank. Thirteen years later, building workers were demonstrating in New York; a gigantic pandemonium with banners, horns and yelling people all with the same goal in sight, but talking and looking and walking in different directions. Of course the press are present, looking with their microphones and cameras for the biggest wide-open

mouth. At that moment Gary Winogrand took a picture: a chaotic picture that seems remarkably fully ballanced. The sort of picture that restores one's belief in chance. The same goes for the portrait, neatly shot from the hip, of an unquestionably fat lady dressed in a fur coat and a white hat with a veil around her unnaturally plastered face. Diane Arbus photographed her in 1968 on Fifth Avenue, maybe even on the same streetcorner where a few years later Joel Meyerowitz saw a somewhat shabbier, older man running across the streel Snap, again America, again an American photograph.

Four photographs, one by one a genuine visual delight, and each one made by an American photographer. But what do the photographs actually teil us about American photography? What really makes these photographs 'American'? Why do Frank's photographs appear to belong to the same period as those of Meyerowitz even though there are around twenty years separating them? Why does Frank's work belong to the 50's and Winogrand's and Arbus's to the 60's?

These are the questions you ask when you read such a sun/ey. Questions for which you expect an answer to be inferred from the presentation of the photographs. Nothing could be less true, however: one or more crowded pages are devoted to each photographer, one after another 82 times. Presented along a straight line consisting of decades neatly succeeding each other - which is what decades do anyway.

Characteristic styles, movements, changes, development? Everything is lost in a wooden, contentless presentation.

It has the appearance of an overview, but it shows only a little bit of what was made, and when and by whom, whithout making 'American photography' understandable. Anyone at their wit's end who then turns to the four articles in the catalogue will have their hopes dashed. From humanism to formalism, that's the way Gerry Badger typifies the development in post-war photography, an idea which it seems is meant to form the main thread of the book and which is also dealt with

by BUI Jay, albeit with a somewhat different-sounding purport.

Humanistic photography, according to Badger, is typified by the notion that a photograph has to testify, to inform, and

if possible to ultimately bring about changes. In formalist photography, on the other hand, it's a matter of the aesthetic, the tension between the photographed object and the resulting image, and of the sensitivity and inner promptings of photographer and viewer. Badger puts documentarry photography and photographie journalism in the first category, and everything that does not belong to humanist photography is classified as formalist. It sounds simple and understandable - but it says next to nothing.

Especially when the labelling is accompanied by a dust-cloud of concepts like 'structural formalism', 'expressive formalism', 'abstract formalism', or 'experimental formalism'.

Of more use are the articles by Jonathan Green (writing about the critical reception of the magazine Aperture and the book 'The Americans') and Lewis Baltz, who considers the background to the explosive growth of American photography in the 70's. The latter piece is good if only because the causes he puts forward will cause a lot of people to become disillusioned: the millions of dollars with which Nixon attempted to buy off his critics, the new museums which were looking particularly for cheap and easy exhibitions, the art establishment desperately in search of 'something new', and (naturally, says Baltz) the fact that with photography it's still a matter of 'things' that can be bought and sold.

American Images is too dependent on an exhibition that just happens to show work by American photographers for it to be an overview of American photography. In its present form it can perhaps best be described as a reference-book in which every name is linked to a picture.

Such a thing, to do it justice, is of course never amiss for those who are really interested in 'American photography', whatever that may be. Na verloop v a n tijd Daniël Koning brengt het ouder worden van de mens in beeld. De indringende beelden van deze mensen zetten aan tot contemplatie over de zin van het leven.

Zij tonen oude mensen die weten dat ze geen lange toekomst meer voor zich hebben. Door de zwarte randen, de donkere achtergrond en de licht afgedrukte gezichten wordt het dramatische effect soms wat te sterk geaccentueerd. Hij laat het individualisme van een aantal bejaarde mensen zien. De kracht van hun persoonlijkheid vult het beeld. De omslagfoto toont een hoogbejaarde man die een bromfietshelm draagt met een vignet met het opschrift 'Life'. Uit de tekst blijkt dat hij er nog actief op uittrekt met zijn solex.

De foto's van Tom Tillemans, een gepensioneerde bedrijfsleider van het restaurant Wienerwald, vormen een serie. De overgang van zijn eigen huis in Betondorp te Amsterdam naar het bejaardentehuis wordt gevisualiseerd. De eerste foto geeft een lachende Tom in het midden van de kamer tussen de drukke patronen van het behang en vloerkleed weer. Op de achtergrond staan zijn spullen, hij wacht op de verhuizer. De volgende foto van Tom in de gang van een bejaardenoord is zwart doorgedrukt, zijn gezicht is sterk belicht. Deze foto roept een beklemmende sfeer op.

Uit het interview blijkt dat hij spijt heeft van zijn beslissing om naar het bejaardentehuis te gaan.

Hij zegt 'Het lijkt w e l de Bijlmerbajes, dezelfde gangen'. De laatste foto van deze serie is een vogelperspectiefopname van Tom in zijn gemotoriseerde invalidenwagen met een schaduweffect van dit voertuig op het lichte tegelpad. Zijn streven naar vrijheid wordt hier gesymboliseerd.

De Marokkaanse straatveger met zijn gegroefde gezicht en pet met het insigne van de gemeente Bussum is op een sympathieke wijze vastgelegd. De treffende opmerking van deze gastarbeider is 'Nederland goed, Marokko goed, alles goed'.

Twee norse koppen van bejaarde broers, voormalige SS'ers, kijken direct in de lens. Daniël Koning legt de gestolde ervaring op de gezichten van de robuuste

The penetrating pictures of these people inspires contemplation about the meaning of life. They show old people who know that they only have a short future in front of them. The black edges, the dark background and the lightly printed faces sometimes over-emphasizes the dramatic effect. He reveals the individuality of various elderly people. The strength of their personality fills the picture. The cover photograph is of an elderly man wearing a crash-helmet with a vignette hearing the word 'Life'. According to the text, it seems that he still actively rides about on his Solex moped.

The photographs of Tom Tillemans, a retired Wienerwald restaurant manager, form a series depicting the transition from his own house in the Betondorp suburb of Amsterdam to an old people 's home. The first photograph presents a smiling Tom standing in the middle of the room between the gaudy patterns of the wallpaper and carpet. In the background there are all his belongings since he is waiting for the removal men. The next photograph of Tom in the corridor of the old people 's home has the black ton es pushed through while his face is starkly illuminated.

It evokes an oppressive atmosphere.

From the interview it appears that he regrets his decision to go to the old people 's home. 'It looks like a prison', he says, 'the same corridors'. The final photograph in this series is a bird's eye view of Tom in his motorised invalid car, with a shadow-effect cast by the car on the bright paved path. This symbolizes his pursuit of freedom. The Moroccan street-cleaner with his lined face and his cap hearing the insignia of the municipality of Bussum is recorded in a sympathetic manner. The cogent comment of this 'guestworker' is 'Holland good, Morocco good, everything good'. Two surly heads of elderly brothers, former members of the SS, look directly into the lens. Daniël Koning has recorded the experience engrained on these robust men's faces.

In general the combination of text and

image is successful. The book gives an intriguing picture of our elderly fellow men.

karakter - hoe vreemd dit ook moge klinken in deze context.

Misschien juist daarom doet het kijken ernaar pijn. Het werk van Tomatsu is namelijk buitengewoon suggestief. Dat geldt net zó voor zijn behandeling van het door hem overduidelijk gehate Japanse 'Wirtschaftswunder', de daaraan voorafgaande Amerikaanse bezetting en daaruit voortvloeiende 'amerikanisatie' van zijn land tot op de dag van vandaag.

Nooit eerder zag ik werk van een Japanner die zich zo kritisch opstelt ten aanzien van de (opgedrongen) ontwikkelingen van de eigen samenleving. Nooit eerder ook zag ik de agressie en de pijn zo duidelijk maar zo suggestief ook verbeeld in de aaneenschakeling van voor reportage-fotografie zo abstracte, esthetische beelden.

Shomei Tomatsu - Japan 1952-1981 Vreemd genoeg kende ik de naam van de Japanse fotograaf Shomei Tomatsu in het geheel niet. In Europa is zijn werk niet erg bekend, de enige tentoonstellingen die werk van hem toonden vonden plaats in het Oostenrijkse Graz in 1976 en 1978.

Deze catalogus, die een reizende tentoonstelling begeleidt, is wederom afkomstig uit Graz; ze werd uitgegeven door de mensen van Camera Austria die waarschijnlijk door de aanwezigheid van de Japanse fotograaf Seichi Furuya in hun midden goede contacten met Japan onderhouden. Dat is prettig voor ons allemaal want Tomatsu kan naar mijn mening gerekend worden tot de grootste naoorlogse fotografen. Zijn werk schetst een beeld in thematische onderdelen van de situatie waarin Japan na afloop van W . 0 . II verkeerde en de ontwikkeling die het daarna doormaakte. Eén van die onderdelen heeft als titel 'Nagasaki 11.02' naar het tijdstip waarop de tweede atoombom uit de geschiedenis boven deze stad explodeerde.

Tomatsu was de eerste Japanse fotograaf die dit trauma durfde behandelen; het vormt de eerste serie in het boek, al zijn het niet de oudste foto's. De serie begint namelijk pas in 1961 met zorgvuldig gecomponeerde beelden van bijvoorbeeld een door de extreme hitte gesmolten bierflesje dat oogt als het zwaar vervormde kadaver van een dier, een helm waaraan delen van een menselijke schedel kleven en de resten van een horloge dat op twee minuten over elf is stil blijven staan. Deze beelden worden direct gevolgd door eveneens in het begin van de zestiger jaren gemaakte foto's van Nagasaki en de portretten of lichaamsdetails van enkele zwaarbeschadigde overlevenden. Het zijn in esthetische zin prachtige foto's met een nogal statisch

De tentoonstelling bestaat uit zo'n 300 beelden, de catalogus beeldt ze allemaal op klein formaat af op een crèmekleurige, goedkopere papiersoort. Dit en de begeleidende teksten nemen ongeveer de halve omvang van het boek in beslag. De andere helft (47 pagina's) is een selectie van groter afgebeelde foto's (één per pagina) die op mooi glanzend papier optimaal werden gedrukt. De 'picture-editing' van dit gedeelte is knap werk; er bestaat telkens een spanning tussen de tegenover elkaar geplaatste foto's die heel verhalend is. Er ontstaat als het ware een verhaal in het wit tussen de foto's in.

De gekozen opzet van de catalogus hangt ongetwijfeld samen met de financiële risico's die Camera Austria bereid was te lopen. In deze vorm pakt het gesloten compromis zonder meer bevredigend uit.

Het boek is een fenomenaal document en Tomatsu een fotograaf waar je slechts met het grootste respect over kunt spreken.

accompanies a travelling exhibition, also comes from Graz, having been published by the people from Camera Austria who, most likely because of the presence among them of the Japanese photographer Seichi Furuya, maintain good contacts with Japan. That is fine for all of us since in my opinion Tomatsu can be counted as one of the greatest post-war photographers.

His work paints a picture in thematic sections of the situation Japan found itself in after the Second World War and the subsequent developments it underwent.

One of the sections is titled 'Nagasaki 11.02', referring to the precise moment when the second atomic bomb in history exploded above the city. Tomatsu was the first Japanese photographer who dared to deal with this trauma, and it forms the first section of the book, although these are not his earliest photographs. The series in fact begins only in 1961 with carefully composed pictures of, for example, a beer bottle melted by extreme heat. and looking like the badly deformed corpse of an animal, a heimet to which pieces of a human skull are sticking, and the remains of a watch stopped at two minutes past eleven.

These pictures are directly followed by photographs, likewise made during the early 60's of Nagasaki and portraits or details of bodies of a few badly injured survivors. Aesthetically speaking, these are excellent photographs, with a rather static quality, how strange this may sound considering the context. Perhaps it is because of just this that looking at them is painful, for Tomatsu 's work is extraordinarily suggestive.

The same goes for his treatment of Japans 'ecommic miracle' which he all too obviously despises, as well as the American occupation that preceded this and the consequent 'Americanization' of his country up till the present day. Never before have I seen work by a Japanese adopting such a critica! attitude with regard to the (imposed) developments in his own society. Nor have I ever seen agression and pain expressed so clearly but also so suggestively in the series of what, in terms of reportage photography, are such abstract, aesthetic pictures.

The exhibition comprises some 300 pictures, and the catalogue reproduces all of them in small format on a cream-coloured. cheaper sort of paper. With the accompanying texts this takes up about half the volume of the book. The other half (47 pages) presents a selection of larger photographs (one per page) printed to their best effect on glossy paper. The picture-editing of this section has been very well done; each time there is a narrative tension existing between photographs placed facing each other. A story is generaled, so to speak. in the white spaces between the photographs.

Undoubtedly the chosen form of the catalogue's presentation is connected with the financial risks that Camera Austria was prepared to run, but this form of compromise turns out satisfyingly. The book is a remarkable document and Tomatsu a photographer of whom one can only speak with the greatest respect.

Teenage L u s t / T u l s a Los van gegevens over carrière etc. vertellen fotoboeken ons zelden veel over het persoonlijke leven van de fotograaf.

Het boek van Larry Clark is daarentegen doorspekt, misschien wel té nadrukkelijk, met zijn levensverhaal, dat hij in 27 bladzijden aan het eind van het boek vertelt.

Hij verhaalt van zijn jeugd in Tulsa, Oklahoma, van hoe hij op zijn zestiende speed begon te spuiten, van zijn omgang met de plaatselijke delinquenten wier leven grotendeels bestond uit sex, wapens en drugs. Dit zijn de mensen die afgebeeld staan in het eerste boek van Larry Clark.

Tulsa, dat hij zelf in 1971 uitbracht. Zonder compromissen heeft Clark zijn vrienden gefotografeerd terwijl zij zichzelf en elkaar drugs toedienen, met wapens zwaaien, uitdrukkingsloos voor zich uit staren, ogenschijnlijk zonder dat het hun iets kon schelen dat ze gefotografeerd werden (hoewel de verschijning van het boek nog onaangename gevolgen zou hebben). Het boek en zijn vriendschap met Ralph Gibson bezorgden hem een

NEA-beurs (National Endowment for the Arts) maar door zijn rusteloze manier van leven raakte hij steeds verder in drugs en geweld verzeild, waardoor ten slotte zijn hele toelage besteed werd aan advocaten die hem uit de gevangenis moesten houden nadat hem deelname aan een steekpartij ten laste was gelegd. Later schiet hij iemand neer, krijgt een proeftijd aan zijn broek, begint zwaar te drinken, verdwijnt wederom achter slot en grendel en brengt een tijdje door in een verbeteringsgesticht. Dit was het moment waarop het leven de zaak had overgenomen en foto's niet meer telden. De drugs putten hem zo uit dat hij niet eens meer zijn camera naar zijn oog kan brengen om de afschuwelijke, gewelddadige taferelen vast te leggen die zich om hem heen afspelen (hij betreurt vooral dat hij een scène gemist heeft waarbij een dikke man een jaap krijgt met een mes: 'Ik geloof dat dit een van de beste foto's zou zijn geweest die ik ooit in mijn leven gemaakt heb').

Uiteindelijk pakt hij al zijn negatieven en afdrukken bij elkaar en verhuist hij naar New York waar hij begint 'Teenage Lust' samen te stellen en foto's te maken van jonge mannelijke prostituees op 42nd Street, waarmee het boek besloten wordt. De laatste groep foto's is veel gekunstelder dan het vroegere werk; deze kinderen zijn eerder zijn onderwerpen dan zijn maatjes. De toon is harder en het is alsof hij daarmee w i l uitdrukken dat hij afstand neemt. Hier hebben w e het besef van de 'Ander' zoals dat altijd meespeelt bij Diane Arbus maar Clark hoeft deze uitsluiting niet te overschrijden (wat in het geval van Arbus wel het geval was door haar elitaire opvoeding) en hij kan zich veroorloven schaamteloos te zijn. Diane Arbus heeft misschien w e l foto's genomen van neukende mensen maar ze heeft ze nooit gepubliceerd zoals Larry Clark. De reden dat de meer expliciete foto's in 'Teenage Lust' zich kunnen onttrekken aan de beschuldiging van pornografie is dat ze zo ongekunsteld zijn.

Zij zijn evenals de kranteknipsels die over de vergrijpen gaan waar Clark bij betrokken was (en die ook in dit boek zijn opgenomen) eenvoudigweg documenten, soms niet meer dan souvenirs, die een herinnering vormen aan de vriendschappen van een man die toevallig fotograaf is. Hoe onthullend ze ook zijn, deze foto's vormen niet werkelijk een aanleiding

O.E.K.E voor extrapolaties over het karakter van de Amerikaanse samenleving. Zij kunnen waarde hebben voor hun maker, als een overwinning op alle tegenspoed. Het verhaal houdt op in 1981; ik vraag me af wat Larry Clark nu uitspookt.

Photo books very rarely teil us much about the personal life of the photographer, apart from details of career, etc, but Larry Clark's book is completely suffused, indeed almost overwhelmed, by the story of his life which he recounts in 27 pages at the end of the book. He tells us about growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, how he started shooting speed at the age of 16 and hanging around with the local delinquents who were all heavily into sex, guns and drugs. These are the people pictured in Larry Clark's first book, Tulsa, which he published himself in 1971.

Without compromising, Clark photographed his friends fixing themselves and each other, brandishing guns, blankly staring into space, not seeming to care that they are being photographed (although there were to be repercussions after the book appeared). The book did help him, however, to get an NEA grant, and he was befriended by Palph Gibson, but his drifting lifestyle led him further into drugs and violence, and he ended up having to spend all his grant money on lawyers' fees to avoid going to prison on a stabbing charge. Next thing is he shoots someone, gets put on probation, starts drinking heavily, gets busted again and spends a while in a penitentiary. At this point 'life had taken over and the photographs had stopped'. He gets so wasted on drugs that he can't even raise the camera to his eye to record the ugly, violent scènes happening all around him (he particularly regrets missing a scène when a fat man is slashed with a knife: 'I think this would have been one of the best pictures l'd ever took in my life').

Eventually he packs all his negatives and prints and moves to New York where he starts putting 'Teenage Lust' together and taking the photographs of young male hustlers on 42nd St. which conclude the book.

studied and posed than Clark's previous work; these kids are his subjects rather than his buddies. The tone is harsher, as though expressive of a distancing.

Here we have the sense of the 'Other' that pervades Diane Arbus 's photographs, but Clark does not have to transgress, this exclusion (which in Arbus 's case was caused bij her privileged upbringing) and he can afford to be shameless. Diane Arbus may well have taken photographs of people fucking but she never published them, as Larry Clark does. What saves some of the more explicit photographs in 'Teenage Lust' from the charge of pornography is that there is no artifice. Like the newspaper clippings relating to a couple of the crimes Clark became involved in, also included in the book, they are simply documents, sometimes nothing more than souvenirs, recalling the friendships of a man who happens to be a photographer.

Revealing though they are, these photographs do not really lead to extrapolations about the nature of American society. They can have redemptive value only for their author, as an achievement against all the odds. The narrative ends in 1981; I wonder what Larry Clark is up to now.

Ins U n i v e r s u m der T e c h n i s c h e n Bilder Vilém Flusser, die in dit boek de thesen van zijn eerste boek 'Towards a Philosophy of Photography' (zie bespreking P 17) uitwerkt, maakt de lezer duidelijk dat we midden in een cultuurrevolutie zitten, die

inhoudt dat w e meer en meer omgeven worden door foto's, film, video, televisie en computerbeeldschermen. Hij vat al deze beelden samen met de term 'technische beelden'. Zij vormen het antwoord op de steeds abstracter wordende samenleving waarvoor teksten niet langer toereikend zijn. De consequentie van het vervangen van teksten door beelden is evenwel dat we de wereld niet meer als lineair, historisch, eendimensionaal ervaren (immers je kunt tekst zien als een lijn), maar als een vlak, tweedimensional gegeven, als context. Flusser ziet dus een overgang naar een nieuwe periode, die van de technische beelden. Om deze beelden te kunnen begrijpen hebben w e volgens Flusser een geheel nieuwe handeling nodig: het inbeelden ('Einbilden'). Als w e bijvoorbeeld naar de televisie kijken, zien w e in feite alleen maar puntjes. Deze zouden ons geen informatie verschaffen, als w e niet door training hadden geleerd hiervan een totaal-beeld te vormen. Dit zou dan het nieuwe zijn; dat de wetenschappelijke verklaring als ontoereikend gezien wordt en de inbeelding de wereld opnieuw concreet gestalte geeft. Het nieuwe ervan zie ik niet helemaal, omdat de beeldende kunst altijd al aanschouwelijk was en als concretisering van de beleefde wereld fungeerde. Daarbij is de inbeeldingskracht ook bij de traditionele beelden, dus schilderijen, nodig om ze te 'zien'. Anders zouden zij toch ook vervallen tot verfstreken en kleurpigmenten?

Wat me wel nieuw lijkt, maar zeker niet beperkt tot technische beelden, is dat een beeld niet meer een afbeelding van de werkelijkheid is, maar een projectie daarop. Als je de eerste produkten van de fotografie bekijkt, kun je constateren dat ook zij spiegels zijn van de werkelijkheid, en zeker geen projecties van een innerlijke beleving. Daarbij is het juist zo dat de fotografie de schilderkunst bevrijd heeft van de afbeeldingsdrift. Pas veel later is zij daar zelf ook gedeeltelijk van bevrijd, namelijk door de opkomst van de 'andere' technische beelden, zo lijkt het!

'Ins Universum der Technischen Bilder' is al met al een ondoorzichtig boek geworden, dat echter voor wie doorzettingsvermogen heeft voldoende interessant materiaal te bieden heeft, maar voor wie al te ver is meegestroomd in de nieuwe cultuurfase dreigt te vervallen tot abstracte quanta. Ach, stond er maar een plaatje in.

Ins Universum der Technischen Bilder Expanding here on the theses of his first book 'Towards a Philosophy of Photography' (reviewed in P. 17), Vilém Flusser makes it clear to the reade' that we are in the middle of a cultural revolution to the effect that we are more and more surrounded by photographs, film, video, television and computer sereens, all of which he sums up with the term, 'technical images'. They are the answer to the increasingly abstract nature of society, whereby texts are no longer sufficiënt. The consequence, however. of the replacement of texts by images is that we cease to experience the world as linear, historical, and one-dimensional (after all, you can see text as a line), but as a surf ace rendered two-dimensionally, as context. Flusser therefore perceives a transition to a new period, that of technical images. In order to be able to understand these images Flusser says we need a completely new method of dealing with them: the imagination ('Einbilden') When we watch television, for example, what we see in fact are just linie dots. These would be unable to provide us with information if we had not learned, by training, to form a total image from them. This is what is supposed to be new then: that the scientific explanation is seen as insufficiënt and that the imagination restores a concrete gestalt to the world. I don't quite see what is so new about this. since visual art was always already illustrative and functioned to give concrete form to the experienced world.

Moreover, the power of imagination is also necessary with traditional images, i.e. paintings, in order to 'see'them. Otherwise wouldn't they likewise be reduced to brushstrokes and colour pigments?

What does seem new to me, but certainly not limited to technical images, is that an image is no longer a representation of reality, but a projection of it. If you look at the initial products of photography you can observe that they too are mirrors of reality, and certainly not projections of an inner experience. Besides. it was photography that liberated painting from the tendency to depiction, and only much later was it able to partially free itself from that as well, namely through the emergence of these 'other' technical images, or so it seems.

All in all, 'Ins Universum der Technischen Bilder' is an opaque book; for those with

perseverance it has enough interesting material to offer, but for those who have already been carried too far by the currents of the new cultural phase it threatens to lapse into abstract quantities. Oh, ifonlyit contained just one picture.

Bij de fotoreportages voor De Groene in het midden van de jaren zeventig over de bedrijfssluitingen, stakingen en werkloosheid nam Han Singels het standpunt van de geëngageerde Fotograaf in, die begreep dat onderwerpen als machtsverhoudingen en werkgelegenheidsproblematiek lastig te visualiseren zijn. Hij probeerde deze abstracties te herleiden tot de realiteit van de gewone mensen en hun emoties. Zoals een somber kijkend groepje oudere werknemers te midden van balen textiel de boodschap over het faillissement van hun bedrijf gelaten aanhoort. In het algemeen dienen zijn foto's in de Groene als ondersteuning van een tekst. Bij de foto-opdracht van de jongeren staan de foto's echter meer op zichzelf. De foto is het verhaal geworden.

Dit overzicht van het fotojournalistieke werk van Han Singels gedurende het laatste decennium toont een unieke verzameling foto's met documentaire waarde.

Foto's voor de Groene Het boek 'Foto's voor de Groene van Han Singels' begint met de resultaten van zijn documentaire opdracht van de afdeling Nederlandse geschiedenis van het Rijksmuseum te Amsterdam over de jongerencultuur in Nederland (1984). Han Singels heeft zich nadrukkelijk gericht op de onderlinge verschillen van houdingen en levensstijlen van jongeren. Hij maakte foto's van modieus geklede mensen in de nieuwbouwwijk Gaasperdam, een corpsballenfeest en een groep rockers in Amsterdam, Surinaamse meisjes op het Bakajarifestival te Rotterdam en jonge vrouwen in extase bij het laatste concert van de popgroep Doe Maar. Het gaat niet over bepaalde milieus of de jeugdwerkloosheid maar alleen over de beleving van jongeren van de groepscultuur. Singels heeft zich op de stijl waarin de jongeren naar buiten treden geconcentreerd.

Hij legt de deels oppervlakkige en esthetische fagade van de jongeren vast, in de hoop dat er iets ontsluierd wordt. Hij w i l de neiging van de jongeren om de acteur of actrice in hun eigen leven te zijn laten zien. Op de foto van het jaarlijkse bal van het Amsterdamse Studentencorps wordt de volwassen wereld nagespeeld; een blonde vrouw kijkt dromerig voor zich uit. te midden van mannen die druk doen.

Een foto van mooi opgemaakte jongedames bij de jaarlijkse modeshow van de Amsterdamse modeacademie Charles Montaigne in het Concertgebouw drukt een romantisch verlangen naar de volwassen wereld uit. Het enige sprekende

Singels expressly focusses on the differences in attitude and lifestyle among young people.

He takes photographs of fashionably dressed people in the newly built suburb of Gaasperdam, a students' ball and a group of rockers in Amsterdam, Surinamese girls at the Bakajari festival in Rotterdam and young girls in ecstasy at the last concert of the pop group Doe Maar It's not so much about particular classes or youth unemployment as simply about young people 's experience of group culture.

cords the partially superficial and aesthetic facade of youth, in the hope of unveiling something. He wishes to show the tendency of young people to be the actor and actress in their own lives. In the photograph of the Amsterdam student body's annual ball the adult world is mimicked; a young woman dreamingly gazing while around her men are acting busy. A photograph of beautifully madeup girls at the Charles Montaigne fashion academy's annual fashion show in the Concertgebouw expresses a romantic longing for the adult world. The only vivid element is the face of the girl looking away out of the photograph. The other girl in this photograph is standing with her back to the photographer; it is as though she knows the photographer is standing there and that she has a beautiful back. The construction of these photographs is sophisticated and compositionally interesting.

With the photo-journalism for the newspaper 'De Groen' in the middle seventies, about factory closures, strikes and unemployment, Han Singels adopted the position of the committed photographer, realising that subjects like relationships of power and the problem of full employment are difficult to visualise. He tried to reduce these abstractions to the reality of ordinary people and their emotions.

Such as a solemn looking group of elderly employees surrounded bij bales of cloth resignedly hearing the announcement that their factory has gone bankrupt. In general, his photographs in De Groene serve to support a text. The commissioned photographs of young people, however, are much more self-sufficient.

The photograph has become the story.

This survey of Han Singels' photo-journalistic work from the last decade shows a unique collection of photographs rich in documentary value.

a ETRO Günther Förg/Jeff Wall Wat Günther Förg en Jeff W a l l gemeen hebben is aanzienlijk minder dan wat hen scheidt. Deze kunstenaars maken beiden gebruik van kleurenfoto's van zeer groot formaat, maar waar Förg deze toont in traditionele, houten lijsten (die hij weliswaar hoog boven ooghoogte aan de muur hangt), laat Wall Cibachrome-dia's zien in gigantische metalen kaders van licht, die de kijker direct confronteren.

Förg behoort tot de jonge generatie van Duitse kunstenaars, zoals Palermo, die onder invloed kwamen te staan van Joseph Beuys. Beuys zelf heeft zelfs een klein rolletje op een van de foto's van Förg, 'Puglia', (1985), waarop hij de treden van een Italiaans gebouw bestijgt: trappen en architectuur lijken Förg te fascineren. Er zijn verscheidene foto's van hem van trappenhuizen, recht naar boven of beneden geschoten. Op één ervan, een zwart-wit foto', 'Fall' (1984), ligt een man met armen en benen gespreid onder in het trappenhuis; een andere is een vergroting van een rasterfoto van een vrouw die de trap opgaat terwijl ze een kind draagt. Afgezien van de afwijkende reproduktiemethoden is er weinig dat deze foto's bijzonder maakt.

Dieptes worden teruggebracht tot oppervlakken, die hun plaats innemen via een tamelijk onafgerond vormenspel. Tussen de trappenhuisstukken treffen we een portret aan van een vrouw 'Micha' (1982), met even weinig reden als waarmee wij in de volgende ruimte twee gewone ramen in 'Huis Esters' (1984) te zien krijgen. In dezelfde tentoonstellingsruimte is een gedeelte van de muur helgeel geschilderd, met daarop bevestigd een grote ingelijste spiegel. Deze decoratieve interventie dient echter nauwelijks een duidelijk doel. Förg laat ons een gesloten wereld van oppervlakken en lege vormen zien, die erg lijkt op de Italiaanse fascistische architectuur die het onderwerp is van 'Eur' (1985) - indrukwekkend maar in wezen triviaal.

Het werk van J e f f W a l l daarentegen maakt met recht indruk. Het doet op het eerste gezicht denken aan de van achteren verlichte afbeeldingen die men in hotels, conferentie-oorden, op vliegvelden en spoorwegstations aantreft en die daar doorgaans dienen ter bevordering van 'iets commercieels' met betrekking tot produkten of de dienstverlening. De onderwerpen van de foto's van Wall komen echter uit een totaal andere wereld - het landschap van een Canada dat in een staat van gevorderd kapitalistisch verval verkeert.

Op 'Bad Goods' (1984) staat een LatijnsAmerikaanse arbeider voor een hoop afgekeurde sla die uit kartonnen dozen komt zetten, met achter hem bergen puin en vuil en een fabrieksgebouw waar verschillende keren 'For Sale' op staat. Zoals dat bij veel van Walls werk het geval is, verbergt de eenvoud van de titel een aantal mogelijke lezingen: 'bad goods' slaat duidelijk op de bedorven kroppen sla, maar kan ook dienen als een aanklacht tegen een industriële situatie waaruit zulke discrepanties voortkomen, terwijl de aanwezigheid van de arbeider ons herinnert aan de racistische houding van waaruit de schuld voor de fouten van een samenleving gelegd wordt bij de zwaksten van die samenleving.

Eenzelfde verontrustende polemiek ligt ten grondslag aan 'Diatribe' (1985), wederom

een afbeelding van een braakliggend stuk land in een buitenwijk. Ditmaal wordt er een actie getoond. Een man die een kind draagt (beiden blank) scheldt een sombere zwarte vrouw uit, die een halve pas voor hem loopt. Daar er geen andere opvallende details zijn, richt onze aandacht zich op de mond van de man en proberen we de stilte in te vullen met onze eigen interpretatie van wat de man zegt, de vrouw denkt, en de identiteit van het kind. Deze mensen en hun door ons voorgestelde levens dringen binnen in de ruimte van de kijker die op deze manier betrokken raakt in dit onopgeloste familiedrama. Omdat je wordt ont-

wapend door het schouwspel en de gebruikelijke veiligheid van de kunstbeschouwing je ontzegd wordt, word je als kijker in feite het onderwerp van het werk.

Dat Jeff Wall een politiek bewust kunstenaar is, moet al duidelijk zijn uit deze twee voorbeelden uit zijn werk, maar wat hem belangwekkender maakt dan de gemiddelde 'geëngageerde' kunstenaar, is het feit dat zijn foto's dialectische oefeningen zijn in een goed doordachte politiek van voorstellingen, die gebaseerd zijn op echte ethische en sociale problemen. In tegenstelling tot veel van zijn Newyorkse tijdgenoten, die er de voorkeur aan geven de

aantrekkingskracht van tot fetisj verheven produkten te behandelen, is W a l l geïnteresseerd in verhoudingen tussen mensen.

'No' (1983) laat ons ook een gedramatiseerd moreel gegeven zien: een hoer die naast een gebouw staat en zichzelf aanbiedt aan een goedgeklede man op het moment dat hij haar passeert. De man is zich duidelijk bewust van haar aanwezigheid, maar hij kijkt resoluut voor zich uit naar de toeschouwer, waardoor hij zijn weigering eerder aan óns te kennen geeft dan aan de hoer. Van de strakke uitdrukking op zijn gezicht valt een simpel moreel gebod af te lezen: een 'Gij zult niet', dat natuurlijk uitgaat van de mogelijkheid dat het tegendeel zou kunnen gebeuren. Deze uitwisseling van blikken tussen de hoer, de man, en de toeschouwer, maken van dit werk een stukje theater van interacties, dat plaatsvindt tegen een anonieme achtergrond van een stad waarvan de verticaal in tweeën gespleten ruimte de dialectische inhoud van het werk en het geënsceneerde van de voorstelling benadrukt.

In het werk van W a l l wordt vaak verwezen naar de conventies in de schilderkunst volgens het 19e-eeuwse realisme. In zijn portretten, zoals 'Movie Audience' (1979) en 'Young Workers' (1978 & '84) die niet in deze tentoonstelling opgenomen zijn, heeft hij 'gewone' mannen en vrouwen vergroot tot meer dan levensgrote glanzende dia's, die hen doen veranderen in de karakteristieke 'onbezongen helden' van het Sociaal Realisme, echter met gebruikmaking van middelen die geassocieerd worden met de consumptiemaatschappij.

Op 'Abundance' (1985) worden twee 'bag ladies' - de één snuffelend in een doos met afgedankte kleding, de ander poserend in een zonderling allegaartje van kledingstukken - tot heldinnen verheven en tot symbool van de tegenstelling van de laatkapitalistische maatschappij op een manier Courbet waardig. Alleen, daar waar deze verfijning aanbrengt met een penseelstreek en wat kleur, maakt Wall gebruik van het voorhanden zijn van fluorescerend licht en Cibachrome. Ter voortzetting van zijn project om de genres van de 19de eeuw te herhalen, komt W a l ! met twee kleine vergezichten van landschappen op de tentoonstelling. 'The Jewish Cemetery' (1980) is een afbeelding van een uitgestrekt terrein met grafstenen en bomen met op de achtergrond een rivier, terwijl 'Steve's Farm' (1980) een vervallen 'boerderij' laat zien die langzamerhand in het nauw gedreven wordt door oprukkende nieuwbouw in de vorm van keurige rijtjeshuizen. Hoewel de tweede foto op een kritisch standpunt lijkt te wijzen, verschaft de onomwonden vastlegging van de realiteit in dit werk minder spanning dan de geënsceneerde voorstellingen van zijn recentere werk waarop de boodschap overheerst.

De jacht op de tegenstelling die uit het werk van Wall spreekt, levert een kritische analyse van zowel de maatschappij als de kunst op. Evenals de man op 'No' moeten wij ons niet laten verleiden of bedriegen door het 'valse besef' van de extravagantie en de aantrekkelijkheid van het werk, omdat die factoren onverwijld teniet worden gedaan door het tegenstrijdige karakter van de inhoud. Jeff W a l l ondermijnt zijn eigen middelen om de betekenis van iets groter te maken, om de toeschouwer dóór, en verder dan het schouwspel te slepen, hopelijk naar een politiek bewustzijn.

MG What Günther Förg and Jeff Wall have in common is considerably less than what distinguishes them from each other. Both artists employ colour photography in very

large formats, but whereas Förg presents them in traditional woeden frames (albeit placing them on the wall well above the height of the viewer), Wall shows Cibachrome transparancies in huge metal light boxes which directly confront the viewer.

Förg belongs to the young generation of German artists, such as Palermo, who came under the influence of Joseph Beuys. Indeed, Beuys himself can be seen in a sort of cameo role in one of Förg's photographs, 'Puglia' (1985), ascending the steps of an Italian building. Stairs and architecture seem to fascinate Förg. Several of his photographs are of stairwells viewed either from above or from below. In one of these, a black and white photograph titled 'Fall' (1984) there is a man lying spread-eagled at the bottom of the stairwell; another is an enlargement from a screened photograph showing a woman climbing the stairs carrying a child. Apart from differences of reproduction methods there is little that distinguishes these photoworks. Depths are reduced to surfaces that take their place in a rather inconclusive play of forms. A portrait of a woman, 'Micha' (1982) is included among the stairwell pieces for as little reason as, in the next room, we are shown views of two ordinary windows in 'Huis Esters' (1984). In this same exhibition room a section of the wall is painted bright yellow and bears a large framed minor, but there is little apparent purpose to this decorative intervention. Förg presents us with a closed world of surfaces and empty forms, much like the Italian Fascist architecture that is the subject of 'Eur' (1985) - impressive, but essentially trivial.

Jeff Wall's works, on the other hand, are imposing for good reason. At first sight they are reminiscent of the back-lit displays one sees in hotels, conference centres, airports or train stations, where they usually function to promote a commercial product or service. The subjects of Wall's photographs, however, come from a completely different world - the landscape of Canada in a state of advanced capitalist decay. In 'Bad Goods' (1984), an Hispanic worker stands bef ore a pile of thrown-away lettuces spilling out of cardboard boxes, while behind him there are mounds of rubble and dirt and a factory building hearing 'For Sale' notices. As in many of Wall's works the simplicity of the title belies a number of possible readings: 'badgoods' clearly refers to the spoilt lettuces, but it can also serve as an indictment of the industrial situation that produces such discrepancies, while the presence of the worker reminds us of the racialist attitude that blames the weakest members of society for that society's failures.

A similar disquieting polemic underlies Viatribe'(1985) which again depicts a suburban wasteland. This time an action is shown: a man carrying a child (both white) is verbally abusing a sullen black woman walking half a pace ahead of him. Lacking any other significant details our attention focusses on the man's mouth, and we attempt to fill the silence with our own versions of what the man is saying, the woman thinking, and the identity of the child. These characters and their imagined lives invade the space of the viewer who thus becomes implicated in the unresolved domestic drama.

Disarmed by the spectacle and denied the customary security of contemplating art, the viewer becomes, in effect, the subject of the work.

That Jeff Wall is a politically-conscious artist should already be clear from these two examples of his work, but what makes him more consequential than the average 'committed' artist is the fact that his works are dialectica! exercises in a well-thought out politics of representation grounded in real ethical and social issues. Unlike many of his New York contemporaries who prefer to deal with the allure of fetishized products Wall is interested in relations between people.

'No' (1983) presents us with another dramatized moral event: a hooker standing next to a building offers herself to a well-dressed man who is about to pass her by. The man is clearly aware of her presence but he looks resolutely straight ahead of him - towards the spectator, signalling his refusal to us rather than to the hooker. The stern expression on his face is couched in terms of a simple moral imperative, a 'thou shalt not', which presumes, of course, the possibility that the contrary could happen. The trading of glances between the hooker, the man and the spectator make this work a piece of interactive theatre taking place against an anonymous urban backdrop, whose vertically bisected space emphasises that work's dialectica! content and the staged form of its presentation.

There are often references in Wall's works to the pictorial conventions of 19th century Realist painting. In his portrait works such as 'Movie Audience' (1979) and 'Young Workers' (1978 & '84) which were not included in this exhibition, 'ordinary' men and women are blown up to more than life-sized gleaming transparencies, transforming them into the typical 'unsung heroes' of Socialist Realism but using the means associated with commodity capitalism. In 'Abundance' (1985) the life-sized figures of two 'bag ladies', one of them rummaging through a box of discarded clothing, the other posing in a bizarre outfit of disparate garments, are heroicised and made emblematic of the contradictions of lateCapitalist society in a manner worthy of Courbet, only instead of employing the finesse of brushwork and colouring Wall turns to the availability of fluorescent light and Cibachrome.

Continuing the project of recapulating 19th century genres, Wall also offers two smaller panoramic landscape pieces in the exhibition. 'The Jewish Cemetery' (1980) depicts an expanse of tombstones and trees against a distant view of a river, while 'Steve's Farm (1980) shows a dilapidated 'farm' being encroached on by neat rows of suburban houses.

Although the latter does suggest a critica! take, straightforward recording of reality in these works offers less tension than the staged representation of his more recent works in which meanings are paramount.

In its pursuit of contradictions Wall's work provides a critique both of society and of art. Like the man in 'No' we should not let ourselves be seduced or deceived by the 'false consciousness' of the work's extravagance and attractiveness, since these are immediately annulled by the contradictory nature of the content. Jeff Wall subverts his own means in order to extend meaning, to draw the spectator through and beyond the spectacle, hopefully towards political consciousness.

Talking back to the Media De mediaomgeving kan, met haar doordringende (en overredende) spervuur van beelden en boodschappen, een bron van fascinatie of angst zijn, van beeldverering of beeldbestorming. Dit is een dialectische kwestie die de organisatoren van 'Talking Back to the Media', een gevarieerde manifestatie die afgelopen november op verschillende plaatsen in Amsterdam plaatshad, grotendeels ontgaan lijkt te zijn. Het doel van de manifestatie was het werk te laten zien van kunstenaars die middelen als fotografie, video, geluid, film, publikaties en posters aanwenden om commentaar te leveren op de 'realiteit' die wordt opgeroepen als deze middelen gebruikt worden voor massacommunicatie.

De tentoonstelling in Aorta liet het werk zien van 20 kunstenaars uit de Verenigde

Staten, Engeland en Nederland. De methoden varieerden van een subversieve toeëigening van in de media bestaande beelden (Baldessari, Levine, Mettig, Prince en Sieverding) tot de schepping van media-ac/?f/ge beelden (o.a. Bloom, Majore, Schouten, Sherman).

John Baldessari, die door zijn docentschap de leidsman is geweest van sommigen van de andere Amerikanen die op de tentoonstelling vertegenwoordigd zijn, is gefascineerd door foto's uit Hollywood-films, met name die uit de jaren veertig, waarvan hij een grote collectie bezit. Door fragmenten uit deze foto's samen te brengen is hij in staat een systeem te onthullen van structurele gelijkenissen en vrijblijvende narratieve codes.

Waar zijn werk een dialoog is met de media, is dat van zijn ex-studenten kritischer in de zin van een 'politieke benadering van het afbeelden' en minder begaan met formele kwesties. Zowel Cindy Sherman als Richard Prince richten zich op het verlies van de persoonlijke identiteit dat door de massamedia wordt voort-

gebracht, een thema dat Julia Ventura behandelt door zich te beperken tot de codes van geveinsde passie. Sherrie Levine is echter degene die het verst gaat in het aan de kaak stellen van juist de authenticiteit van het afgebeelde. Haar uit 14 delen bestaande serie van kleine kleurenreprodukties van schilderijen van J . M . W . Turner is het enige werk op de tentoonstelling dat kunst als een massamedium aanspreekt en wel op zo'n wijze dat kunst ontmaskerd wordt als niets anders dan het zoveelste banale produkt van de consumptiemaatschappij. De gloed die haar zachte kleuren aan een tentoonstelling van hoofdzakelijk zwartwit werk verlenen, herinnert ons op overrompelende wijze aan de leerstellingen van de verheven kunst waar zelfs de meest revolutionaire kunst (zoals die van Turner in zijn dagen) uiteindelijk toe gerekend moet worden. De oppositionele stellingname van Levine wordt gedeeld

door een paar andere exposanten, met name door Victor Burgin en Silvia Kolbowski, die de voorstelling van vrouwen in de media kritisch onder de loep nemen, en Hans Haacke, die het algemene imago betwijfelt dat door Philips via reclame wordt bevorderd als excuus voor de investeringspraktijken van dit bedrijf in Zuid-Afrika. Geschreven taal speelt een zeer belangrijke rol in dit werk, omdat hiermee de verhandeling uitgebreid wordt en een historisch perspectief geboden wordt.

De een volledige muur in beslag nemende vergroting van Katharina Sieverding van een rij figuren die vagelijk op mensen lijken, en die als onderschrift heeft 'Schachtfeld Deutschland', een verwijzing naar Hiroshima, en het muurgrote kunstwerk van honderden beelden van t.v.-journaals van haar landgenoot Klaus Mettig tonen aan dat de media in staat zijn geschiedenis over te brengen. In Amerika kent men daarentegen geen geschiedenis, maar slechts een heden dat meer fictief is dan echt. Dit verschil tus-

uit/from: 'ButI Think You Question My Motives' (Talking Back to The Media) sen de Europese en de Amerikaanse gevoeligheid werd mij duidelijk toen ik de poster zag die John Baldessari voor 'Talking Back to the Media' ontwierp. De opstelling van de twee figuren vertoont een verbazingwekkende gelijkenis met de fotomontage van John Heartfield die een zwaarlijvige bankier toont, die een stapel bankpapier overhandigt aan Hitier terwijl laatstgenoemde de fascistengroet brengt. Toen was de boodschap even helder en krachtig als nu; zonder onderschrift blijft de boodschap van Baldessari echter een mysterie en betekent zij weinig.

'Talking Back' houdt tegenspraak in ; het is wat een klein jongetje doet om zijn vader te irriteren, met andere woorden, talking back' staat voor een tarten van de autoriteit. Maar hoe kunnen kunstenaars tornen aan de almachtige massamedia?

Door infiltratie en ondermijning , door zich toegang te verschaffen tot de mediakanalen, zoals 'Talking Back' radioprogramma's en de kabelprogramma's? Door alternatieve zenders op te richten, radioen t.v.-piraten bijvoorbeeld? De massamedia besteden zelden aandacht aan kunstenaars, behalve wanneer zij gestegen zijn tot het niveau van mediasterren, zoals Andy Warhol en Salvador Dali, maar zij zijn ten volle bereid om een nieuwe kunststijl over te nemen zodra die in zwang raakt (zoals dat gebeurde met Pop Art en nu gebeurt met een namaaksoort 'post-modernisme'). De media confronteren de kunst met haar eigen begaanheid met stijl en mode, die incestueuze relaties voortbrengt, zoals te zien valt in het werk van Lydia Schouten, Henk Tas en Alan David Tu, die zich allemaal lijken te willen laten opnemen in de glamourwereld van de media. De media zijn erg goed in het scheppen van fantasieĂŤn en fetisjes; kunstenaars, voornamelijk schilders en beeldhouwers, zijn daartoe ook in staat geweest, maar evenzeer als de fotografie de schilderkunst overbodig maakte, zullen de nieuwe elektronische media als video en computerbeelden, zoals Duchamp eens in een brief aan Alfred Stieglitz suggereerde, fotografie saai doen lijken. The media environment, with its pervasive (and persuasive) barrage of images and messages, can be a source of fascination or of fear, iconolatry or iconoclasm. This is a dialectical point that seems to have largely escaped the organisers of 'Talking Back to the Media', a multifarious manifestation that took place in several locations in Amsterdam last November, lts aim was to show the work of artists using the media of photography, video, sound, film, publications and posters in order to comment on the reality' that is conjured up when these media are used for mass communication.

The exhibition in Aorta presented the work of 20 artists from USA, England, Germany and Holland. Strategies varied from a subversive appropriation of existing media imagery (Baldessari, Levine, Mettig, Prince and Sieverding) to the creation of media-like imagery (Bloom, Majore. Schouten, Sherman, among othersj.

John Baldessari, who, through his teaching, has been the mentor of some of the other American representatives in the exhibition, is fascinated by Hollywood stills, particularly from the 40's, of

The flash 'of subdued colour that her series brings to a predominantly black and white exhibition is an unsettling reminder of the canons of high art to which even the most revolutinary art (as Turners was in his own time) must eventually be subsumed. Levine's oppositional stance is shared by some of the other exhibitors, notably Victor Burgin and Silvia Kolbowski, who question the representation of women in the media, and Hans Haacke, who challenges the public image promoted by the Philips company to excuse its investment practices in South Africa. Written language plays a crucial role in these works, enlarging their discourse and offering a historical perspective. Katharina Sieverding's wallsized enlargement of a row of vaguely human figures, captioned 'Schachtfeld Deutschland' and titled with a reference to Hiroshima, and her compatriot Klaus Mettig 's mural of hundreds of images, taken from TV News broadcasts, demonstrate the media's ability to mediate history. In America, on the other hand, there is no history, there is only the present, which is itself more fictional than real.

This difference between a European sensibility and an American one was highlighted for me when I saw the poster John Baldessari designed for 'Talking Back to the Media'. The positioning of the two figures bears a striking resemblance to John Heartfield's photomonta-

when it becomes fashionable (as happened with Pop Art, and is now happening with a spurious brand of 'Post-Modernism'). The media feed back to art its own concern with style and fashion, generating incestuous relationships, such as can be seen in the works of Lydia Schouten, Henk Tas and Alan David Tu, all of whom appear to want to insert themselves into the glamorous world of the media. The media are very adapt at creating fantasies and fetish-objects; artists, primarily painters and sculptors, have been able to do it as well, but just as photography largely made painting redundant, perhaps the new electronic media of video and computer graphics will, as Duchamp once proposed in a letter to Alfred Stieglitz, make photography seem boring. For the moment, though, photography is still the major means by which our environment is mediated and represented, and there is a continuing need for artists to comment on this as critically as they can.

which he has a large collection. By placing together fragments from these photos he is able to reveal a hermeneutic of structural resemblances and free-floating narrative codes. If his work is a dialogue with the media, the work of his ex-students tends to be more critical in terms of a 'politics of representation', and less concerned with formal issues. Both Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince focus on the loss of personal identify engendered by the mass media, which is a theme also dealt with by Julia Venture in her reductive code of simulated passion, but it is Sherrie Levine who goes furthest in questioning the very authenticity of representation. Her U-part series of small colour reproductions of paintings by J. M. W. Turner is the only work in the exhibition to address art itself as a mass medium, and to do so in a way that reveals art to be simply another banal product of consumer society.

'Talking back' implies contradiction it is what a little boy does to annoy his father, in other words, it represents a challenge to authority. But how can artists challenge the powers invested in all-powerful mass media? By infiltration and subversion, by gaining access to the media channels (as with the 'Talking Back' radio programmes and cablecasts)?

By establishing alternative channels (pirate radio and TV, for example)? The mass media rarely take note of artists, except when they have become elevated to the status of media stars like Andy Warhol or Salvador Dali, but they are perfectly willing to co-opt a new art style

Mijn eerste indruk van de fototentoonstelling 'Amsterdam 1950-1959, 20 fotografen' was, dat de jaren vijftig een leukere en gezelligere tijd moeten zijn geweest dan de tijd waarin wij nu leven.

Met een toenemend gevoel van 'jammer dat ik daar niet bij ben geweest', liep ik langs de foto's, waarop het Amsterdam van toen mooier, schoner en vrediger lijkt. M e t name twee foto's gaven voor mij de sfeer goed weer. De ene foto is die van de toeschouwers bij een wielerwedstrijd op de Lindengracht, gemaakt door Sem Presser. Een groepje keurig geklede Amsterdammers - het moet een zondag zijn geweest - kijkt vol spanning naar de naderende renners. De bejaarde kijkers zitten op klapstoeltjes - de grote bejaardenhuizen zijn nog niet gebouwd.

Op de achtergrond een ouderwetse melkinrichting. De andere foto is ook al op de Lindengracht genomen, door E. van Moerkerken. Hij fotografeerde de atelier-

meisjes, de naaisters, die in hun lunchpauze voor een kraam van 'His Masters Voice' in hun stofjassen op het trottoir dansen.

Waren de jaren vijftig leuker, beter? Of komt het door de samenstelling van de tentoonstelling? Een van de samenstellers, Boudewijn Bakker, van het Amsterdamse Gemeentearchief, vertelde mij over de totstandkoming. Uitgangspunt vormde het werk van een aantal goede fotografen van wie werk aanwezig w a s in het archief. Een benaderingswijze: uitgaan van thema's en daar geschikte beelden bij zoeken, bleek al vrij snel saaie reeksen beelden op te leveren. De tentoonstelling is dat allerminst. Het is een beeldverhaal over de stad en haar bewoners, niet thematisch geordend maar ook niet helemaal zonder een indeling. Het aardige hiervan is dat het fotoboek met poëtische of prozaïsche teksten juist in de jaren vijftig zeer geliefd was bij fotografen. Een bekend voorbeeld is 'Beeldroman', van Emmy Andriesse (1956.)

Geen ander Nederlands gemeentearchief zou een dergelijke mooie fototentoonstelling kunnen maken. Aan deze rijkheid van het archief liggen de zogenaamde historische, documentaire foto-opdrachten ten grondslag. Sinds 1978 verstrekt het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst deze opdrachten. Per jaar wordt aan 2 a 3 fotografen de opdracht verstrekt om hun archieven na te pluizen op interessante foto's. Ook wordt zelfs wel een opdracht verstrekt betreffende het nagelaten werk van een reeds overleden fotograaf. Niet alleen historisch-topografische selectiecriteria spelen hierin een rol, maar ook artistieke. Op de tentoonstelling zijn de resultaten te vinden van opdrachten aan Oscar van Alphen, Eva Besnyo, Carel Blazer, Hans de Boer, Dirk de Herder, Paul Huf, Henk Jonker, Aart Klein, Dolf Kruger, E. van Moerkerken, Sem Presser, Kryn Taconis, J a n Versnel en Cor van Weele. Verder zijn er nieuwe aankopen aanwezig van Emmy Andriesse, Ed van der Elsken, Johan van der Keuken, Leonard Freed en Cas Oorthuys. De meeste vertegenwoordigde fotografen hebben twee dingen gemeen: ze waren Amsterdammer, en lid van de GKf, de Gebonden Kunstenaars federatie. Deze kunstenaarsorganisatie werd na de oorlog opgericht en de afdeling fotografie bestond uit een vrij kleine groep (ruim twintig) serieuze fotografen, die hoge eisen stelden aan eikaars werk en aan fotografie in het algemeen.

De GKf-leden waren in verschillende takken van de fotografie werkzaam, en dat is ook op de tentoonstelling goed te zien: Paul Huf met zijn strak geregisseerde beelden zoals Rijk de Gooijer met een dienblad op een racefiets, het beroemde portret van de vijf Vijftigers, en een foto van Willem Sandberg met zijn nieuwe collectie industriële vorgeving in het Stedelijk. Of Dolf Kruger, die veel voor de Waarheid fotografeerde, en de andere zijde van de zich wederopbouwende maatschappij liet zien: havenarbeiders die op werk staan te wachten en de stakende werknemers bij Werkspoor. Of Sem Presser, die als fotojournalist vooral 'het moment' vastlegde. Maar ook foto's van GKf-leden als architectuurfotograaf Jan Versnel en 'straatfotograaf' Ed van der Elsken zijn aanwezig en dragen bij aan het verhaal. Wat de fotografen toen sterk verbond, was het streven naar kwaliteit. Ruim twintig jaar later is dat nog altijd duidelijk te zien. Maar er is nog meer dat de beelden gemeen hebben. De foto's zijn ongedwongen, het zijn geen

gezochte, geforceerde composities. Dit heeft alleszins te maken met de opvattingen van de GKf-fotografen. Voor de oorlog waren veel van hen bezig geweest met het ontdekken van de artistieke mogelijkheden van de fotografie. In de jaren dertig had men gezocht, geëxperimenteerd, fotogrammen gemaakt, nieuwe camerastandpunten ontdekt, naar grafische effecten gezocht, of structuren benadrukt. Ze hadden iets willen bewijzen, waarschijnlijk dat de fotografie kunst was, en dat ze vooral niets met schilderkunst van doen had. De fotografen uit de jaren vijftig en met name de GKf-ers lijken over deze bewijsdrang heengegroeid.

Kwaliteit was hun nieuwe streven. En, zo

pend. Maar over de inhoud niets dan goeds. Als je het boek openslaat, kijken de twintig uitgekozen fotografen je direct aan. Een subtiel detail is. dat bij elk protret nummers staan die verwijzen naar de foto's. Zo is met één oogopslag te zien van welke fotograaf de meeste foto's zijn opgenomen, en dat zegt toch altijd iets over de voorkeuren van de samenstellers.

Uitverkoren fotografen zijn Dolf Kruger (10 foto's) en Oscar van Alphen (8 foto's).

Totaal bevat het boek 80 foto's. Op de volgende pagina korte biografieën. De daaropvolgende pagina is eigenlijk pas de titelpagina.

In de verantwoording, die weliswaar niet zo heet, maar wel zo bedoeld is, kunnen

Dat de uiteindelijke keuze weloverwogen is, is al direct aan de eerste twee fotopagina's te zien: links de fietsers op de Weteringschans en rechts de wedstrijd voor fietsjongens, beide van Kryn Taconis. De twee beelden vormen tesamen een krachtig geheel. De vaart van de fietsjongens wordt versterkt door het contrast met de rustige fietsers op de Weteringschans. Zo zijn er meer pagina's waar 'beeldrijm' is toegepast. Een overduidelijk voorbeeld is de foto van een groep jongens met een waterfles in Bos en Lommer (foto 72) tegenover het geregisseerde portret 'Vijf Vijftigers' van Paul Huf. Het bekijken van het boek is alleen hierom al een genot. Er zijn ook enkele

schreef Piet Zwart in een catalogus van een GKf-tentoonstelIing in 1952: 'het onveranderlijke van de fotografie is de werkelijkheid, waarmiddenin de mens staat.'

'De fotograaf documenteert en beeldt het leven.' Het is deze serieuze aandacht voor de mens, en de pretentieloze ondertoon die sterk contrasteert met de huidige fotografie. Ik wil hier absoluut niet de meestal zoetsappige fotografie van de Family of Man propageren, de tentoonstelling die in 1956 in het Stedelijk te zien was met de titel 'Wij mensen'. Maar omdat de laatste jaren de fotografen soms opnieuw krampachtige pogingen ondernemen om te bewijzen dat ze er ook bij horen, dat ze ook (post) moderne kunst kunnen maken, of vernieuwend kunnen zijn. is de tentoonstelling een openbaring. Na mijn rondgang over de tentoonstelling besefte ik dat de jaren vijftig niet leuker of beter zijn geweest: de foto's van Dolf Kruger getuigden hiervan, en bij de foto van de dansende ateliermeisjes las ik dat de arbeidspositie van vrouwen slecht was. Het is de manier van kijken van deze integere fotografen, die niets anders wilden bewijzen dan hun vakmanschap en hun aandacht voor de mens, die deze indruk oplevert.

Voor de omslag is gebruik gemaakt van een weinig origineel idee: twee litho's die ten opzichte van elkaar iets verschoven zijn. en waarvan er een in kleur is gedrukt. Rechts bovenaan is een fotootje klein geplaatst, aan de bovenkant aflo-

we lezen, waarop de selectie van de foto's berust: 'Bij de keuze van de foto's hebben we het ons zo moeilijk mogelijk gemaakt en gezocht naar evenwicht op vele manieren: kwaliteit, stijl, techniek, thema, tijd, fotografen.... Een botsing der criteria was onvermijdelijk, veel dierbare foto's zijn met pijn opzij gelegd.' 'Niet alleen wij maar ook de kijker zal van alles missen.'

foto's opgenomen die niet op de tentoonstelling hingen, bij voorbeeld de foto van het CPN-gebouw Felix Meritis na de Russische inval in Hongarije, gemaakt door Ed van der Elsken. Hieruit spreekt duidelijk de aandacht van Fragment voor de meer op de maatschappelijke omstandigheden georiënteerde fotografie.

Remco Campert schreef de inleiding, waarin hij de retorische vraag stelt of we

EdR My initial impression of the exhibition 'Amsterdam 1950-1959, 20 photographers' was that the fifties must have been a nicer and friendlier time than the one we are living in at present. With a growing feeling of 'pity that I wasn't there', I walked past photographs in which the Amsterdam of that time looked more beautiful, cleaner and more peaceful. Two photographs in particular evoked in me this atmosphere. One of them, made by Sem Presser, is of spectators at a bicycle race on the Lindegracht. A small group of well-dressed Amsterdammers - it must have been a Sunday - is watching full of excitement the approaching cyclists. The elderly spectators are sitting on folding stools - the old people 's homes had not yet been built. In the background there is an old-fashioned dairy establishment. The other photograph was also taken on the Lindengracht, by E. van Moerkerken. He photographed the girls from the workshops, the seamstresses, dancing on the pavement in their dust-coats during lunchbreak, in front of a stalt promoting 'His Master's Voice'.

Were the fifties pleasanter, better? Or is this just the impression given by the composition of the exhibition. One of the selectors, Boudewijn Bakker of the Amsterdam City Archive, told me how it came about. The starting-point was a number of good photographers whose work existed in the archive. One method of approach, to take themes and then look for suitable pictures, seemed fairly quickly to result in boring series of pictures. The exhibition is nothing like that; it is a visual narrative about the city and

its inhabitants, organised not by themes, but also not entirely without classification. What is nice is that this approach is similar to the photobook with poetic or prosaic texts which was a favourite of photographers particularly during the fifties, a well-known example being Emmy Andriesse's 'Beeldroman' (1956). No other Dutch municipal archive could have made such a fine photo exhibititon. The reason for the richness of this archive lies with the so-called historical documentary photography assignments which have been funded since 1978 by the Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst.

Every year two or three photographers or their family if posthumously - are invited to sift through their archives for interesting photographs. Not only historical or topographical criteria of selection play a role in this, but also artistic ones.

The exhibition shows the results of giving this task to Oscar van Alphen, Eva Besnyo, Carel Blazer, Hans de Boer, Dirk de Herder, Paul Huf, Henk Jonker, Aart Klein. Dolf Kruger, E. van Moerkerken, Sem Presser, Kryn Taconis, Jan Versnel and Cor van Weele. In addition there are recent acquisitions from Emmy Andriesse, Ed van de Elsken, Johan van der Keuken, Leonard Freed and Cas Oorthuys.

Most of the photographers represented have two things in common: they lived in Amsterdam and they were members of the GKf, the federation of applied artists.

This artists' organisation was founded after the war and the photography section consisted of a small group of around twenty serious photographers who made high demands upon each other's work and upon photography in general.

The GKf members were active in various branches of photography, which can clearly be seen in the exhibition: Paul Huf with his stiffly organised pictures such as Rijk de Gooijer on his racing bicycle with a serving-tray, the famous portrait of the five 'Vijftigers', and a photograph of Willem Sandberg with his new industrial design collection in the Stedelijk. Or Dolf Kruger, who photographed a lot for the Communist news-

paper 'De Waarheid', revealing the other side of the new society then being reconstructed: doek workers standing around waiting for work, and the striking workers at Werkspoor. Or the photojournalist Sem Presser busily recording 'the moment'. But there are also photographs by other GKf members such as the architecture photographer Jan Versnel and the 'street photographer' Ed van der Elsken, and these contribute to the story.

What strongly united the GKf photographers at that time was the pursuit of quality, and this can still be seen twenty or so years later. But there is even more that the pictures seem to share.

The photographs are unselfconscious, they are not sought-out, laboured compositions. In all respects this has to do with the ideas of the GKf photographers.

Before the war many of them were busy discovering the artistic possibilities of photography. During the thirties they had investigated, experimented, made photograms, discovered new camera angles, tried out graphic effects, or emphasized structures. They had wanted to prove something, probably that photography was art, and that above all they had nothing to do with the art of painting. The photographers from the fifties, particularly the GKf members, appear to have outgrown this need to prove something.

Their new aim was quality. As Piet Zwart wrote in the catalogue for a GKf exhibition in 1952: 'what never changes for photography is the reality in the midst of which stands man.' 'The photographer documents and depicts life.' It is this serious attention to mankind and unpretentious undertone that contrasts strongly with contemporary photography. I certainly do not want to argue in favour of the mushy photography of The Family of Man which was on show at the Stedelijk in 1956 under the title 'Wij mensen'. But because in recent years photographers have once again been making frantic efforts to prove that they belong there as well, that they too can make (post-)modern art and be innovative, the exhibition is a sort of revelation.

After my tour of the exhibition I realized that the fifties were not nicer or better: Dolf Kruger's photographs testify to this, and next to the photograph of the girls dancing I read that the working status of women was quite bad. It is the way of seeing of these honest photographers, who wanted to prove nothing more than their craftsmanship and their concern for man, that produces this impression.

Book On the occasion of the exhibition 'Amsterdam 1950-1959, 20 photographers' a book of photographs has been published

by Fragment. The cover makes use of a fairly unoriginal idea: two lithographs slightly displaced in relation to each other, with one of them printed in colour.

At top right, running off the top edge, there is another small photograph. But nothing bad can be said about the contents. As you open the book the twenty selected photographers look directly at you. One subtle detail is that next to each portrait there are numbers which refer to the photographs, so that you can see at a glance which photographer had the most photographs included, which telIs you something about the selectors' preferences. The favourite photographers are Dolf Kruger (10 photographs) and Oscar van Alphen (8 photographs). The book contains a total of 80 photographs.

On the next page are short biographies, and only after that do you actually come to the little page.

In the justification, which, it is true, is not called this although it seems to be meant this way, we are able to read what the selection of photographs was based on: 'In selecting the photographs we have made it as difficult as possible for ourselves by aiming for balance in many ways: quality, style, technique, theme, time, photographers....A clash of criteria was unavoidable, and a lot of cherished photographs had to be set aside'. 'Not only we, but also the viewer, will miss something.'

That the final selection was well-considered can already be seen in the first two pages of photographs: on the left-hand page is a photograph of cyclists on the Weteringschans, and on the right is one showing a competition for bicycle delivery boys; both are by Kryn Taconis. Together these two pictures form a powerful unity. The fast pace of the bicycle boys is reinforced by the serenity of the cyclists on the Weteringschans. This 'visual rhyming' is employed on other pages as well. An obvious example is the photograph of a group of boys with a water-bottle in Bos and Lommer (photograph 72), opposite Paul Huf's organised portrait, 'Vijf Vijftigers'. Looking at the book is already a pleasure just for this.

A few photographs are included that were not hung in the exhibition, such as Ed van der Elsken 's photograph of the Dutch Communist Party building 'Felix Meritis' after the Russian invasion of Hungary. This clearly expresses Fragments interest in photography attuned more to social circumstances. Remco Campert, in his introduction, asks the rhetorical question as to whether all of us do not invent our own fifties. A good question to bear in mind when leafing through this excellent book.

First award for young European photographers Dörthe Eiszfeldt (D) is de winnares geworden van de eerste prijs voor jonge Europese fotografen, groot D M 10000. waarvan het de bedoeling is dat deze vanaf dit jaar jaarlijks zal worden toegekend. De prijs is in het leven geroepen door de Deutsche Leasing A G te Frankfurt die daartoe jaarlijks een internationale jury benoemt van deskundigen. De tweede prijs (DM 6000) ging naar de Zwitser Gilles Buyle-Bodin, de derde prijs (DM 4000) was voor Martin Parr (GB). In totaal solliciteerden dit jaar 714 kunstenaars/fotografen uit 22 landen naar de prijs. Het januari-nummer van het tijdschrift European Photography biedt een visueel verslag van de 19 beste inzendingen.

Dörthe Eiszfeldt (Germany) is the winner of the first prize for young European photographers, an amount of DM 10,000.

The idea is that starting this year the award will be made annually. The award was initiated by Deutsche Leasing AG in Frankfurt who appoint for it each year an international jury of experts. The second prize IDM 6,000) went to the Swiss Gilles Buyle-Bodin, and the third prize (DM 4,000) to Martin Parr (Britain). This year a total of 714 artists/photographers from 22 countries applied for the award.

The January issue of the magazine European Photography gives a visual report of the 19 best stibmissions.

Houston Foto Fest Een mixture van de Parijse 'Mois de la Photo' en de Arlesiaanse 'Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie', zo zou je het Houston FotoFest kunnen betitelen. Het 'Fest' biedt de mogelijkheid 25 verschillende lezingen aan te horen, een symposium bij te wonen over het verzamelen van foto's, een zestigtal tentoonstellingen te bezoeken en in min of meer (in)formele sfeer collega's (fotografen, galeristen, uitgevers, conservatoren, e.d.) te ontmoeten. Dat is dus nogal wat. Dit alles vindt plaats van 20 februari tot 31 maart; de meest interessante periode is die van 1 tot 15 maart als de meeste activiteiten gepland zijn en de bijbehorende 'foto-VIPs' acte de presence geven.

Houston Foto Fest A mixture of Paris's 'Mois de la Photo'

and the 'Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie' in Arles is how you could style the Houston Foto Fest. The 'Fest' offers the possibility to listen to different lectures, to attend a symposium on collecting photographs, to visit sixty exhibitions and to meet colleagues (photographers, gallery owners, publishers, curators, etc.) in a more or less (in)formal atmosphere. That is quite a lot then.

Everything takes place from February 20th till March 31st, but the most interesting period is from the 1st till the 15th March when most activities are planned and the 'photo VIP's' who are part of it put in an appearance.

BK-informatie voortaan alleen naar abonnees De Rijksdienst Beeldende Kunst zal met ingang van 1986 de uitgave van BK-informatie, bulletin voor beeldend kunstenaars, overnemen van de nu vrijwel geheel ontmantelde Nederlandse Kunststichting (NKS). Het blad zal worden gefinancierd op basis van advertentie- en abonnementenopbrengsten. Dat laatste is nieuw - tot dusver werd het blad namelijk gratis verspreid. Het ministerie van W V C verbond deze eis echter aan het voortzetten van het subsidie aan het blad.

De prijs voor de acht nummers die in 1986 zullen verschijnen hoeft voor niemand een belemmering te zijn: ƒ 10,-.

Perspektief workshops In de eerste helft van 1986 organiseert Perspektief een serie workshops, alsmede een fotoproject. De workshops, die op zondagen (en éénmaal op zaterdag) worden gegeven, bestaan uit twee of drie bijeenkomsten. In elke workshop maken de deelnemers op intensieve wijze kennis met het werk van een fotograaf (i.c. de docent). In het fotoproject ( ' H e t E x p e r i m e n t ' ) worden de deelnemers geconfronteerd met het werk van drie experimenteel werkende fotografen. Zowel voor de workshops als voor het project wordt van de deelnemers een eigen inzet en activiteit verwacht. Het programma ziet er als volgt uit: W o r k s h o p s ' R o n d h a n g e n ' van Marrie Bot op 26/1, 16/2 en 9/3; ' M o m e n t s i n t i m e ' van Paul den Hollander op 8/2 en 9/2; ' F o t o m a g i e ' van Rommert Boonstra op 16/3, 6/4 en 20/4; ' F o t o g r a f i e en f a n t a s i e II'van Diana Blok op 27/4, 11/5 en 25/5.

Project ' H e t E x p e r i m e n t ' Eric van der Schalie op 7/2 en 28/2, Krystina Ziach 7/3 en 21/3, Paul de Nooijer 18/4 en 9/5, Luuk Kramer 23/5. De aanvangstijden voor de workshops zijn 10.30 uur.

Het project, dat op vrijdagavonden wordt gehouden, begint telkens om 18.30 uur.

Zowel voor de workshops als voor het project geldt een inschrijfgeld van ƒ 75,-.
