Einleitung Mit der Ausstellung Fusion erfülle ich einen lang gehegten Wunsch und würdige einen Künstler, der für mich einer der bedeutendsten konkret konstruktiven Künstler der Gegenwart ist – Barna Benedek. Das Schaffen von Barna Benedek hat eine besondere Bedeutung für mich, denn er versucht nicht, die sichtbare Wirklichkeit nachzuahmen, sondern eine neue, unbekannte, unerforschte Wirklichkeit sichtbar zu machen. Dafür expandiert er räumliche Situationen und erzeugt mit Hilfe von visuellen Vibrationen und Schwingungen kognitive und emotionale Resonanzen zwischen dem Werk und dem Betrachter. Barna Benedek spiegelt nicht eine bestimmte Realität wider, er vergleicht nicht, er verweist nicht durch Andeutungen oder Allegorien auf eine andere Realität, sondern offenbart eine vollkommen neue Realität und ihre Transformation, was wiederum seinem Werk eine einzigartige Authentizität verleiht.

Im Gegensatz zu den Surrealisten, deren Ziel es war, etwas Traumhaftes, Unbewusstes, Phantastisches und Absurdes darzustellen, spricht Barna Benedek nicht das Unterbewusstsein an, sondern direkt die sensorische Wahrnehmung, er berauscht nicht den kreativen Geist, sondern macht ihn durch die Offenlegung der Mechanismen der Wirklichkeitsinterpretation wach und nüchtern.

Die Ausstellung vereint zwei wichtige Werkserien aus unterschiedlichen Schaffensphasen; es ist eine Zusammenschau von alten und neuen Werken. Seit Beginn seines Schaffens ist Barna Benedek obsessiv mit dem Ordnungsprinzip sowie dem Einfangen vom Licht auf dem Bildträger beschäftigt. In seinen neuesten Werken bezieht Barna die 3. Dimension in die zweidimensionale Darstellung ein. Dadurch gelingt es ihm, in ein und derselben Darstellung verschiedene Realitätsebenen zu verbinden, gleichsam

spiegelt er die optische Illusion im realen räumlichen Objekt und umgekehrt und eröffnet so das Thema der Ambivalenz der Grenzen unterschiedlicher Illusionsebenen. Nähe und Distanz, Konzentration und Entspannung, Licht und Schatten, Stille und Vibration, Progression und Degression, Realität und Täuschung etc. sind charakteristisch für sein Werk. Wie das Leben manchmal ein neues Bewusstsein oder eine Aktualisierung der Weltanschauung erfordert, welche durch Rückzug und Entfernung ermöglicht wird, setzen Barna Benedeks Werke eine dynamische Betrachtungsweise, mithin die physische Annäherung und Entfernung, voraus. Dadurch werden Autonomie und Eigenleben des Dargestellten möglich und Barna Benedeks strenge Kompositionen lebendig.

Introduction The exhibition Fusion is a long-cherished wish and a tribute to Barna Benedek, whom I consider one of the most significant conc­rete constructive artists of the present time. Barna Benedek’s body of work has a special meaning for me because he does not imitate reality, but instead shows unknown and unexplored facets of the world. To achieve this, Barna expands spatial situations with the help of visual vibrations and oscillations. Thereby he generates cognitive and emotional resonances between the work and the viewer.

Barna does not reproduce a certain reality, he does not compare or refer to another reality through allusions or allegories, but he reveals a completely new reality and its transformation, which in turn makes his work unique and authentic. Unlike the surrealists, whose aim was to depict something dreamlike, unconscious, absurd and fantastic, Barna Benedek does not address the subconscious but directly the sensory perception, he does not intoxicate the creative mind but awakens and sobers it up by revealing the mechanisms of reality.

The exhibition combines two important series of artworks from different creative periods. It is a sy­ nop­sis of old and new paintings and objects. Since the beginning of his creative work, Barna has been obsessively concerned with the principle of order as well as with capturing light on an image carrier. In his latest works he goes further and fuses the 3rd dimension with the two-dimensional depiction. In this way he succeeds in combining different levels of reality in one and the same representation. At the same time, he reflects the optical illusion in the real spatial object and opens the topic of the ambivalence of different levels of illusion. Closeness and distance, light and shadow, stillness and vibration,

| 5 progression and degression, concentration and re­­ lax­ation, reality and illusion, etc. are characteristic for his work. Just as life sometimes requires a new consciousness or an update of the world view, which is only made possible by withdrawal and distance, Barna Benedek‘s works require a dyna­m ic way of looking at things and reveal themselves in the process of physical approach as well as distancing. Consequently his artworks gain autonomy and self-existence of the depiction, which enables Barna Benedek‘s precise compositions to come to life.

Fusion. Auf der Suche nach Licht Seit jeher haben Künstler versucht, das Licht in ihren Kunstwerken einzufangen und dafür stets nach neuen Metho­d en und Techniken gesucht. Im alten Ägypten hat man die göttliche Macht der Pharaonen durch goldene Masken und deren strahlendes Licht ausgedrückt. Um die Heiligkeit des Dargestellten hervorzuheben, begann man mit dem Auf­kommen des Christentums auf byzantinischen Ikonen mit Hilfe von leuchtenden Goldfarben nicht mehr das Gesicht, sondern die Umgebung der abge­b ildeten Person zu betonen und verlieh ihr damit eine ans Überirdische gemahnende Aura der Heiligkeit.

Erst in der Renaissance wird Licht zum Instru­m ent der konkreten Formgestaltung. Doch vor der Erfindung der Elektri­zität wurde das Ate­lier des Künstlers vorwiegend von Kerzen be­­­­­­­l euch­­­­­­tet, vielleicht ein Grund, dass in der Kunst der Früh­renaissance das Licht hauptsächlich noch in der Tradition der Goldgrundgemälde metaphorisch verwendet wurde, v.a. als biblisches Symbol für Heiligkeit. In der Re­naissance war Leo­nardo da Vinci der erste, der das Licht aus wissen­­schaftlicher und künstlerischer Sicht untersuchte. Er beschäftigte sich mit den Merkmalen und Mustern der menschlichen Licht­ wahr­n ehmung anhand von Erkenntnissen aus der Physik, Biologie, Anatomie und anderen Wissen­­ schaften. Zu den Zeiten des Frühbarocks stellte dann der italienische Maler Caravaggio das Heilige der seelenlosen Dunkelheit gegenüber, indem er den Kontrast zwischen Hell und Dunkel den Halbtönen vorzog und zu einer dramatischen Konfrontation von Licht und Schatten in­s­­­­­ze­nierte.

Im 17. Jahrhundert ist Licht nicht mehr nur ein Werk­ zeug zur Formgebung, sondern beginnt auf den Leinwänden bedeutender Künstler eine eigene Rolle

zu spielen. Die niederländischen Maler Jan Vermeer sowie Rembrandt van Rijn nutzten Lichtquellen, um nicht nur Volumen zu erzeugen, sondern machten sie zum eigenständigen Teil des Gemäldes. Einen besonderen Platz nimmt in van Rijns Gemälde Judas bringt die 30 Silberlinge zurück von 1629 die gigantische Tora ein, über die ein mächtiger Lichtstrahl fließt, der die Me­­n­­­schen zum Rückzug in die dunklen Tiefen des Raumes zwingt.

Zum Subjekt eines Gemäldes wird das Licht schließ­ lich im Zeitalter der Aufklärung. Das Licht in den Gemälden des britischen Malers Joseph Wright of Derby hatte eine inzwi­schen veränderte metaphorische Bedeutung. Die damaligen wis­sen­schaft­lichen Gemeinschaften revolutionierten die Welt und die menschliche Sichtweise darauf, fungierten gleich­ zeitig als Leitlicht und Licht­strahl, der in der Dunkelheit verborgene Geheimnisse enthüllt. Beispielhaft ist das Werk Ein Philosoph hält einen Vortrag über das Planeta­rium von 1766. Überraschung, Ehrfurcht, Freude: Diese Emotionen konnten vor Joseph Wright of Derby nur in religiösen Gemälden dargestellt werden, die meistens einem vertrauten Thema gewidmet waren. Wright bricht mit dieser Tradition. Zum ersten Mal wurden Arbeiter und Wissen­schaftler zu Helden großer Kompositionen an Stelle von antiken und biblischen Charakteren. Der effektive Lichteinsatz in seinen Werken drückt wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt, rationales Denken, innovatives Wissen und Entdeckungen aus.

An der Wende vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert erlebte die europäische und auch die amerikanische Kultur abermals die Geburtsstunde einer neuen Epoche – den Beginn der Romantik. Deutschland war damals in kleine Herzog­tümer und Fürstentümer zersplittert und erlebte tiefgreifende Umwälzungen des öffentli-

| 7 chen Lebens. Die Maler stellten keine idealisierten Helden dar, schufen keine Monumentalwerke, sondern versuchten, die Tiefen­schichten einer Person, ihre spirituelle Welt mit ihrer moralischen Suche auszu­drücken, deren Größe und Schönheit Begeisterung hervorriefen. Dazu be­dienten sich die Maler der Romantik bevorzugt der D­a r­stellung von Landschaften, in denen die Inszenierung von Licht in Gewitterwolken, Sonnen­u ntergängen und Mondnächten die Natur zu Seelenbildern werden lässt.

Folge­r ichtig wurde das dunkle Licht der Ateliers der Barockzeit durch das natürliche Licht unter freiem Himmel ersetzt.

Als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der deutschen romantischen Malerei gilt Caspar David Friedrich.

Seine melancholisch anmutenden Landschaften sind von überirdischem Licht erfüllt. Ihre Einzigartigkeit liegt in dieser Verschmel­zung von direkter Beobachtung der Natur mit der spirituellen und mystischen Erfahrung des Gesehenen. Auch die lyrischen, licht­­­­­d urch­f luteten Landschaften des britischen Malers William Turner sorgten für Furore.

Später gaben die Impressionisten dem Sonnenlicht die Haupt­rolle in ihren Gemälden. Claude Monet macht das Licht nun zum Protagonisten der bildenden Kunst. In einigen seiner Werke ist es fast un­­mög­lich, ein Objekt oder eine Form zu bestimmen.

Wie in seinen Wasserlilien-Gemälden, in denen der Künstler die Wasseroberfläche zeigt, in der sich die verschiedenen Naturphänomene widerspiegeln: die Wolken, das Sonnenlicht, Herbstlaub oder der grüne Wald. Auf jeder Leinwand sind es die Kompositionen des Lichts selbst, die das Bild ausmachen, und nicht die im Wasser reflektierten Objekte.

Aber erst im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert führten die ra­ san­ten technischen Neuerungen der Lichttechnik die

Künstler zu Neonröhren und Hohlkathodenlampen.

Trotz aller Unterschiede ist eines allen gemeinsam und lässt sie das gleiche Ziel verfolgen: das Licht einzufangen und in den Kunstwerken zu fixieren.

Die ersten radikaleren Versuche, das Licht in der Kunst neu zu denken, begannen im 20. Jahrhundert mit den Experimenten der Avantgarde-Künstler. Die neuen Errungenschaften der Elektrizität ließen die Futuristen Bewegung und Musik im Licht erkennen und machten Licht zum Bildgegenstand, der mit Ge­ sch­­windigkeit, Bewegung, Energie und Musik assoziiert wurde. Besonders das Aufkommen der Fotografie und der Tonaufnahme hat die Kunstwelt auf den Kopf gestellt.

So versuchten Vertreter der bauhaus Schule, insbesondere der ungarische Künstler László MoholyNagy, das Phänomen Licht zu konkretisieren und sein Potenzial mit Hilfe anderer Kunstformen wie Fotografie oder Installation zu untersuchen. Ein Durchbruch in der Lichtdarstellung gelang dann 1930, als László Moholy-Nagy seine wegweisende Installation Light Prop for Electric Stage debütierte.

Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg knüpften erst die 1960er Jahre wieder an die Leistungen der frühen Moderne an und wurden zur Blüte­zeit von kinetischer Kunst und Op-Art, in der Licht eines der wichtigsten Ausdrucksmittel war. Reflektiertes und gebrochenes Licht, Objekte, deren Licht und Schatten während der Bewegung des Betrachters transformieren, Licht­bänder, optische Effekte und viele andere Mittel nutzten ebenfalls die Vertreter der Kinetik, um die Wirkung von Bewegung als künst­lerisches Mittel einzusetzen.

Wie in der gesamten Kunstgeschichte haben auch heute die Versuche, das Licht einzufangen, nichts von ihrer Faszina­tion verloren und stehen im Mittel-

8 | punkt der Arbeit vieler zeitgenössischer Künstler.

Auch im Werk von Barna Benedek ist das Licht das wesentliche künstlerische Medium. Intensiv widmet er sich der Untersuchung über die Sichtbar­machung des Lichtes in der Malerei. Er verwendet virtuos das Licht als künstlerisches Werkzeug, um in seinen geometrisch abstrakten Gemälden Volumen zu modellie­ren. So setzt Barna Benedek die Tradition fort, überarbeitet die Semantik des Lichts und findet neue Wege es anzuwenden. In seinen Arbeiten untersucht er die Eigenschaften und Anwendungs­ methoden des Lichtes. Ebenso thematisiert er die räumliche Ausdehnung von Farben. Geboren 1973 in Budapest, studierte Barna Bendek Kunstpädagogik in Pécs, der Geburtsstadt des berühmten Malers Victor Vasarely. Ganz in der Tradition der Op-Art der 1960er Jahre erzielt Barna Benedek in seinen geometrisch-abstrakten Werken die Illusion von Bewegung und optischen Effekten. Aus der Ferne betrachtet verwandeln sich seine geometrischen Raster in einheitliche Farbfelder. Diese Transformationserfahrung resultiert wiederum aus der Bewegung des Betrachters. Wir sehen pulsierende Formen, flimmernde Muster, Schwingungen, Vibrationen und stehen vor einer hypnotisch anmutenden Komposition. Diese optischen Effekte entstehen vor allem durch Hell-Dunkel- und Farbkontraste, deren Spektrum von Schwarz und Weiß bis zu unzähligen fein abge­stuften Farbnuancen reicht.

In den letzten Jahren hat Barna Benedek angefangen, vermehrt Ultramarinblau in seinen Werken zu verwenden. Dessen besondere Bedeutung als Farbe der Sehnsucht, Ferne, Träumerei, Freiheit, Spiritualität, aber auch Melancholie, verleiht seinen Arbeiten über das Optisch-Konkrete hinaus Emotionalität und

Tiefe. Barnas Werk wird von Linien dominiert. Ihre gleichmäßige und rhythmische Reihung bildet ein Ordnungssystem, mit dem Barna Benedek Flächen definiert, Volumen erzeugt und zu symmetrischen, pulsierenden Kom­po­sitionen verdichtet, deren faszinierende Wirkung einen bleibenden Eindruck beim Betrachter hinterlässt.

Fusion. The search for light Since time immemorial, artists have tried to capture light in their works of art by constantly searching for new methods and techniques. In ancient Egypt, the divine power of the pharaohs was ex­p ressed through golden masks and their radiant light. In order to emphasize the holiness with the advent of Christianity, Byzantine icons began to no lon­g er emphasize the face, but the surroundings of the person depicted, with the help of luminous gold colors, thus giving him an aura of holiness remi­ niscent of the supernatural.

In the Renaissance era light became an instrument of tangible form design. However, before the inven­ tion of electricity, the artist’s studio was mainly lit by candles, perhaps a reason why in the early Renaissance art light was still mainly used meta­ phorically in the tradition of gold background paint­ ings, especially as a biblical symbol of holiness. In the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci was the first to study the optical properties of light from a scientific and artistic point of view. He studied the character­ istics and patterns of human perception of light based on findings from physics, biology, anatomy, and other sciences. Sub­se­quently, during the early Baroque, the Italian painter Caravaggio contrasted the sacred with soulless darkness, preferring the contrast between light and dark to halftones and staging it into a dramatic confron­tation of light and shadow.

In the 17th century, light ceased to be merely a tool for shaping form and began to play its own role on canvases of important artists. The Dutch painters Jan Vermeer and Rembrandt van Rijn used light sources not only to create volume but made it an independent part of the painting. A special place

| 9 in Rembrandt’s painting Judas Repentant, Retur­ ning the Pieces of Silver from 1629 is occupied by the gigantic Torah, over which a powerful white beam of light flows, forcing people to retreat into the dark depths of space.

Light finally becomes the subject of a painting in the Age of Enlightenment. The light in the paintings of the British painter Joseph Wright of Derby had meanwhile changed metaphorical meaning. The scientific communities of that time revolu­tionized the world and the human view of it, acting at the same time as a guiding light and ray of light revea­ ling secrets hidden in the darkness. Exemplary is the work A Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrery from 1766. Surprise, awe, joy – before Joseph Wright of Derby, these emotions could be depicted in religious paintings only, which were usually dedicated to a familiar theme. Wright broke with this tradition. For the first time, workers and scientists became heroes of great compositions instead of ancient and bibli­ cal characters. The effective use of light in his works expressed scientific progress, rational thin­­­k­ing, inno­vative knowledge, and discoveries.

At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, Euro­pe­an and American culture once again experien­c ed the birth of a new era: the beginning of Roman­ti­c ism.

Germany at that time was fragmen­ted into small duchies and principalities and was experiencing profound upheavals in public life. Painters did not depict idealized heroes, did not create monumental works, but tried to express the layers of depth of a person, his spiritual world with its moral quest, whose greatness and beauty aroused enthusiasm.

To this end, painters of the Romanticism era pre­ ferred to use landscapes, in which the staging of

10 | light in storm clouds, sunsets and moonlit nights turned nature into images of the soul. Conse­ quently, the dark light of the studios of the Baroque period was replaced by natural light in the open air.

Caspar David Friedrich is considered one of the most important representatives of German Romanticism.

His melancholic landscapes are filled with unearthly light. Their uniqueness lies in this fusion of direct observation of nature with the spiritual and mystical experience of what is seen. The lyrical landscapes of the British painter William Turner, which are flooded with light, also caused an exceptional sensation.

Later, the Impressionists gave sunlight the leading role in their paintings. Claude Monet turns light into the protagonist of visual art. In some of his works, it is almost impossible to determine an object or a form. As in his water lily paintings, in which the artist shows the water surface reflecting the various natural phenomena: clouds, sunlight, autumn leaves or the green forest. On each canvas, it is the compo­ sition of light itself that makes up the painting, rather than the objects reflected in the water.

It was not until the 20th and 21st centuries that the rapid technical innovations in lighting technology led artists to neon tubes and hollow cathode lamps.

Despite all the differences, one thing is common to all of the artists from different times and makes them pursue the same goal: to capture the light and fix it in the artworks. The first more radical attempts to rethink light in art began in the 20th century with the experiments of avant-garde artists.

The new achievements of electricity made the Futurists see movement and music in light, and made light a pictorial object associated with

speed, movement, energy, and music. The advent of photography and sound recording turned the art world upside down.

Representatives of the bauhaus school, in parti­ cular the Hungarian artist László Moholy-Nagy, for example, attempted to concretize the phenomenon of light and investigate its potential with the help of other art forms such as photography or installation.

A breakthrough in light representation then occurred in 1930, when László Moholy-Nagy debuted his ground­­­breaking installation Light Prop for Electric Stage.

After World War II, it was not until the 1960s that the achievements of early Modernism resumed and became the heyday of Kinetic Art and Op Art, in which light was one of the most important means of expression. Reflected and refracted light, objects whose light and shadow transform during the move­ ment of the viewer, light bands, optical effects, and many other means were also used by the represen­ tatives of the Kinetic Art to employ the effect of movement as an artistic tool.

Today, as in the entire history of art, attempts to capture light have lost none of their fascination and are the focus of the work of numerous contem­ porary artists. Light is also the essential artistic medium in the oeuvre of Barna Bendek. He devotes himself intensively to the study of the visualization of light in painting. For this purpose, he virtuously uses light as an artistic tool to model volume in his geometrically abstract paintings. Contemporary artists like Barna Benedek continue the tradition, reworking the semantics of light and finding new ways to apply it. In his work, he explores the pro­ perties and methods of application of light. He also

| 11 addresses the spatial expansion of colors. Born in Budapest in 1973, Barna Bendek studied art edu­ cation in Pécs, the birthplace of the famous painter Victor Vasarely. In the tradition of 1960s Op Art, Barna Benedek achieves the illusion of move­m ent and optical effects in his geometric abstract paintings. Viewed from a distance, his geometric grids transform into uniform fields of color. This transformational experience in turn results from the movement of the viewer. We see pulsating forms, flickering patterns, oscillations, vibrations, and stand in front of a hypnotic composition. These optical effects are created by light-dark and color contrasts, whose spectrum ranges from black and white to countless finely graded shades of color.

In recent years, Barna Benedek has begun to make increasing use of ultramarine blue in his works. Its special meaning as a color of longing, distance, reverie, freedom, spirituality, but also melancholy, fills his works with a remarkable depth and emotionality, which transcends the visually concrete art style. Barna’s work is dominated by lines. Their regular and rhythmic sequence forms a system of order with which Barna Benedek defines surfaces, creates volume and condenses them into symmetrical, pulsating compositions whose fasci­ nating effect leaves a lasting impression on the viewer.
