INTRODUCTION

Clifton Mahangoe’s (born 1973 in Suriname, lives and works in Amsterdam) body of work consists of video and light installations in which he accentuates a great attention for stillness. The artist has a deep interest for spirituality, energies and the meditative effect of natural phenomena. Another key impor– tance in Mahangoe’s practise is the circle, as the symbol of infinity: the line without beginning or end. Through his works the artist mediates the healing effect of nature, in particular water. His installations often depict intertwined images of running water, reflections, shadows, stars and intend to have a mesmerising and soothing effect on the viewer. < The Sphere > is a series of installations where the artist uses projections onto two-dimensional and three-dimensional surfaces. In this unique compo sition Clifton Mahangoe masterfully combined

EINLEITUNG

technology with art to create a meditative experience. Through < The Sphere > Clifton Mahangoe communicates with the viewer by illustrating the most basic natural elements and visualizing a constant state of alteration in our environment. The viewer‘s response is an integral part of the artwork. Mahangoe captures people’s attention, bring them together, contribute to their awareness about the life on this planet and let them feel the closeness with their surroundings. Fascinating is the technology that Mahangoe has developed for this project over several years. For the first time the artist has succeeded to project film material inside a translucent globe over 360°. The goal of < The Sphere > is to go on a tour and to spread its light around the world.

Clifton Mahangoes (geb. In diesen einzigartigen Kompositionen verbindet Clifton Mahangoe meisterhaft Tech-

CULTURAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT

Water is a vital source of life and the origin of our planet. The world‘s population, now at 7.5 billion, is projected to add 2.3 billion more people by 2050. How can the planet satisfy their thirst? Today 1.1 billion people worldwide lack access to water. One of the great challenges of our society is that we often feel untouched by the problems of others and by global issues. Our goal is to let people feel stronger that they are part of a global community, part of a larger we. This is where art can make a difference! With < The Sphere >, which is a video work projecting the reflection of the nature in the water, we intend people to connect to their senses, body and mind. This feeling may spur thinking, engagement and action. Clifton Mahangoe’s body of work is not just about what the artist wants to express, but about

4

KULTURELLE UND SOZIALE AUSWIRKUNGEN

the viewer’s experience and interaction with the artwork. We wish to capture people’s attention, connect them through light, contribute to their awareness about the life on this planet and let them feel the power over their surroundings. < The Sphere > depicts images of water reflections, which dissolve into abstract lines and patterns and then merge into a sphere. With < The Sphere > the artist communicates an urgent message, presents a unique approach of the environment and raises our expectations of it. On this planet, there are many places where support is more than welcome, for instance places where any form of abundance, freedom or safety are absent. The objective is to send light to places where it is needed most.

STORY

Like the globe from a distance can be observed as dot and from close as circle, Earth and the stars can also be perceived as one, two- and three-dimensional objects. This phenomenon manifests itself in everything according to perspective and dimension; all is relative. We are part of the immense universe: on the one hand as a significant part, but on the other as a microscopic small part. The energy of a human being vibrates in the universe whereby the space around him is attuned to the frequency of Earth. In his expressions of light trapped in circular, multidimensional forms, conceptual light artist Clifton Mahangoe brings together the relativity in time perception together with life energy, called Prana. In his installations and video works the artist appeals to everyone who wants to connect by means of light, in the belief that everything in the universe is connected by life energy.

GESCHICHTE

VENICE

After its great success in the Westerpark Amsterdam in 2017 the travelling interactive light sculpture < The Sphere 3D Spectrum> is enlightening Venice for the first time accompanying the 58th Venice Biennale Arte 2019, before it will travel further around the globe. The European Cultural Centre presents a group exhibition < Personal Structures > from 11th May till 24th November 2019 in two of its prestigious Palazzo’s in the center of Venice – Palazzo Bembo, Palazzo Mora – and the Giardini Marinaressa. This year < Personal Structures > coincides with the launch of the 58. Venice Biennale Arte and features more than 200 internationally established artists from over 40 countries who work in different genres, such as video, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography and installation. Giardini Marinaressa, where Clifton Mahangoe exhibits for the first time in Venice his brand new site-specific media work < The Sphere 3D Spectrum >, is situated in just 10 min walking distance from the main venues of the Venice Biennale Arte, Giardini and Arsenale. You are welcome to visit this beautiful park and see the fascinating video and light installation captured in a three-dimensional 2,40 m fiber glass globe, which was specially created for the framework of the Venice Biennale Arte 2019. Over the years Clifton Mahangoe has been studying the behavior of light and its contact with a surface. After precise observations of how light hits a surface on a certain material and thanks to the innovative technology he developed, Clifton Mahangoe has been able to interact his work with the sun. During the day < The Sphere 3D Spectrum > absorbs sunlight and during the evening it projects a film inside a translucent globe over 360°, which is an absolutely unique achievement in the artistic career by Clifton Mahangoe.

Media Broadcast: In July and August 2019 < The Sphere 3D Spectrum > by Clifton Mahangoe reached out to a significant international audience of 60 million people during an intense media broadcast by Ngage Media. As the major screen advertising company in the Netherlands, Ngage Media operates large digital screens throughout the entire country with a total of 180 spots in the most prominent places, such as the centers of major cities, along busy roads or at the main stations. The screen advertising of the < The Sphere 3D Spectrum > by Clifton Mahangoe featured at the exhibition < Personal Structures > in Venice was broadcasted at the central stations in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Utrecht, Eindhoven and other locations.

VENEDIG

CLIFTON MAHANGOE

Clifton Mahangoe was born 1973 in Suriname, South America. He lives and works in Amsterdam. In the nineties Clifton Mahangoe was one of the first to use video projections of waterfalls and other natural phenomena on life-sized holo-, and water screens. He worked together with Dutch artists such as Mischa Klein and REL. From these applied designs, Mahangoe developed his current autonomous works. His oeuvre consists of video and light installations in which Mahangoe creates a great attention for stillness. Nature in general, and water in particular, have a healing effect according to Mahangoe. Water acts as a mirror that confronts us with the hustle and bustle of our daily existence and at the same time brings us peace of mind. We find all these aspects in the video and light installations of Mahangoe.
