Literatura infantil moçambicana entrelaçando capoeira, costumes e sustentabilidade
O

Mozambican children's literature interweaving capoeira, customs and sustainability
T
he purpose of children's literature is more than just to entertain; it should educate, sensitise and reflect the rich cultural background of a nation. It was with this premise that "Kioni, A Pequena Mandingueira" was born, an innovative literary project centred on valuing Mozambican culture and promoting sustainable values. It's a series in which Mozambique's rich cultural diversity is a constant. From the small village where the story takes place, through the characters' daily interactions, to the details in the illustrations, everything breathes Mozambicanness.

About seven years ago, the creator of Kioni, Joana Vasconcelos, identified a gap in children's literature related to capoeira, an art developed by descendants of African slaves in Brazil with which she had a deep relationship spanning more than two decades. While capoeira harmonises movement, musicality, playfulness and a powerful historical heritage, there was a lack of stories in literature that portrayed these concepts so intrinsic to this art: respect, sharing, friendship and ancestry. Thus was born the desire to create a literary work that would do justice to such richness. The pause imposed by the covid-19 pandemic turned out to be the perfect opportunity to bring the project
And how do you measure the impact of a project like this? The acceptance of the work was clear and diverse. From rag dolls made in Kioni's likeness and schools adapting the stories for theatre plays, to the adoption of the Kioni theme for birthday parties, there was an immediate response. This public affection is ample proof of the project's success and relevance. The work has gone beyond Mozambican borders, being translated into French and sold in countries such as France and Switzerland. "Kioni, A Pequena Mandingueira" is not restricted to reading. The project is designed to be an immersive experience that extends to musicality, traditional games and storytelling sessions, providing various educational and entertaining activities. The character's universe opens the way to exploring
capoeira, traditional Mozambican play and connecting with the country's rich cultural tapestry. With the support of partners such as the Ministry of Culture, Livraria Sequoia, the Brazil-Mozambique Cultural Centre, the Irish Embassy and UNICEF, Kioni has become more than just a book, it has become an instrument for addressing relevant social issues, promoting literacy and valuing Mozambican culture. But the project's success and innovation were not without their challenges. Immersing oneself in the literary world, reconciling routine and dealing with uncertainty are challenges that any creator faces, yet the affection and support of the community a veritable "village" that has united around Kioni have been essential in overcoming these barriers. What about the future? Kioni fans can look forward to more adventures and discoveries. Of the 8 books planned, only two have been released, ensuring that there will be many more stories and lessons to come. Kioni is undoubtedly a literary journey that promises to continue to enrich, educate and inspire. And, as in a capoeira circle, the movement doesn't stop; it just changes rhythm and direction, carrying with it the passion and purpose of sharing Mozambican culture with the world.

No entanto, ele simboliza fortemente o legado colonial português no país.

Yara Costa and the art of storytelling
between seas and memories Yara Costa, a Mozambican artist based on the island of Mozambique, invites us to immerse ourselves in her work "Nakhodha and the Mermaid". This installation, which resonates with the culture and history of coastal populations, is also a warning about global warming. Entering the old Customs House, we are transported on a journey that unites the past with the future, in a reflection on man's relationship with the sea. In the interview that follows, we not only unveil the details of this creation, but also explore the artist's universe and her projects for the future. What was your main inspiration for creating the installation "Nakhodha (Nahota) and the Mermaid"? It wasn't just a source of inspiration. I'm driven by curiosity and the unknown. The island of Mozambique, where I live, and the people's connection to the sea are rich narratives that evoke the past, present and possibly future, and definitely inspired me. The coastal communities' relationship with the ocean, the link with nature and the undocumented stories really captivate me. It's these unique, untold and powerful narratives that fascinate me. Was the choice of the old customs house on Mozambique Island for the installation deliberate in terms of symbolism? Yes, the choice was entirely intentional. Until now, that historical space echoed a single narrative. However, it strongly symbolises the Portuguese colonial legacy in the country. The site evokes memories of the commercial exchange between East and West, the trading of spices and ivory and, crucially, the sale of human beings as slaves. So I felt the need to populate this space with other living narratives that are also part of our legacy and our present. Has the public reaction been in line with expectations? The public response exceeded anything I could have anticipated. The magnitude of the work's impact took me all the way to France, where I was presented with an award by the Minister of Culture and had the opportunity to dialogue with the French president about the project. The positive comments have been an unexpected gift, suggesting that the installation has the potential to touch even more hearts. Can you tell us about the inclusion of virtual reality in your installation and the experience

it gave the public? I see virtual reality as another storytelling tool. Whether through cinema, writing or virtual reality, my interest is in telling stories. In my installation, virtual reality symbolises the experience of Nakhodha, captain of the dhow, a Swahili Arab vessel, a profound connoisseur of the secrets of the winds, tides and stars. This technology makes for an immersive experience, transporting the viewer to an alternative reality, either back to 1749 or ahead to 2030, where the imminent danger of rising sea levels for the entire region is highlighted. I want to create a bridge between ancient and modern technologies, showing that both can coexist and enrich each other. Was the story of Jorge Jamal Sadique the spark for the creation of this project or did you find it during the research process? My interest in the subject already existed and guided my research. However, meeting Jorge Jamal Sadique one afternoon by the sea during my birthday a few years ago was a revelation. I quickly realised that I was looking at an invaluable source of wisdom and perspectives that were little seen and appreciated. Jorge was a door to a universe that, until then, I had only known superficially. Learning from him was profound and enriching, and he became a fundamental component of this project and others. In the past, you focused more on documentaries. Does this transition to immersive installations represent a new phase in your career or just a different way of telling stories? I see it as another distinctive storytelling vehicle. I'm essentially a storyteller and the immersive installation is another tool at my disposal. Some narratives call for this kind of representation, in any case, I'm also developing a film called "In Search of

Art from here
the Mermaid" based on my research. Although it's a pioneering experience for me, this art form dialogues with cinema and can even be interpreted as such, but from a different perspective. My passion for sound and cinema remains, but technological developments have broadened my possibilities for expression. How has your previous experience influenced your approach to this work? Has your training in different countries influenced the way you approach cinema and the art of storytelling? My background is an intrinsic part of who I am, but it's the people I've met, from different corners of the world and with different visions, who have truly enriched my perspective. This diversity of experiences has guided me in my search for my unique voice in the art of storytelling. In times of globalised access to culture, the challenge lies in finding our own voice in this vast chorus. The more I expose myself to different influences, the more defined my direction becomes and the prism through which I want to share stories.

What led you to create the short film about Cyclone Idai? How was the experience of filming in areas so affected by the disaster? My short film shot in Donde, Sussundenga, in the province of Manica, called "Ruins of the River", was born out of an invitation from an organisation that had a project in the region. Although the invitation wasn't directly to produce a film about the organisation's work, it encouraged me to experience the place and its inhabitants. When I visited the area, it was some time after Cyclone Idai and, rather than focusing on the immediate images of devastation, I was drawn to a more reflective perspective that requires contemplation. Even with clear evidence of the destruction, my main focus was on how communities interpreted these sudden changes in nature's patterns. This journey proved to be extremely valuable, leading me to conceive the idea for the immersive installation and encouraging me to deepen my ecological understanding of traditional societies and communities. I quickly realised the deep ancestral respect these communities have for nature, a knowledge that often escapes us as urbanites. Unfortunately, the misconception that these societies are primitive persists, ignoring the vast wisdom and science and balance they harbour. What are the biggest challenges you face as a filmmaker in Mozambique, especially as a woman in the industry? One of the first challenges is to recognise that there is no real consolidated film industry in Mozambique. Although there are individuals dedicated to film production, to say that we have an industry is a
misconception. A solid industry implies a group of specialised technicians and qualified professionals dedicated exclusively to film, something that is not the case in our country. Renowned filmmakers don't survive solely on their films. Therefore, blindly believing in the existence of this industry can be a dangerous mistake, which distances us from our reality and prevents us from looking for appropriate solutions. The real challenge lies in remaining active in an area without a solid structure, facing difficulties ranging from obtaining funding and distribution issues to a lack of qualified professionals. Being a woman in Mozambique is a challenge in itself, and the world of cinema is no exception. The film sector is not immune to wider social dynamics, and the prejudices and inequalities that affect women in various areas are also felt in cinema. So the obstacles I face are not very different from those faced by other Mozambican women in different professional fields. What can we expect in the near future? I'm currently developing a film called "In Search of the Mermaid", on themes I've been exploring for the last four years. Although I already have some outside funding for development, the need for resources for production remains. I believe that 2024 will be a year of dedication and commitment to this project, with the hope of bringing it to reality. At the same time, the "Nakhodha and the Mermaid" installation has the ambition of travelling to various ports, starting on Ilha de Moçambique and passing through Pemba, Nacala, Quelimane and Beira, with the desire to also make its presence felt in Inhambane and concluding in Maputo. This artwork is not exclusively mine or that of Ilha de Moçambique; it addresses issues that are relevant to all of us, Mozambicans, Africans and, I would say, the whole of humanity, as it reflects on the environmental crisis and offers possible solutions. It would be a dream to see it travelling along the Swahili coast and even reaching international ports. Recently, during a visit to France, I received an award from the French Minister of Culture and had the privilege of talking to the French President about the cruciality of investing seriously in the arts and culture. It is imperative that we stop seeing culture merely as a folkloric prop and recognise its intrinsic value as an engine of development. Imagine a country where for every church, temple or mosque there was a structured and active cultural centre and where cultural and artistic education was an integral part of the school curriculum from the outset. What would our future look like in 5 or 10 years? My aim now is to project "Nakhodha and the Mermaid" from the island of Mozambique onto the global stage.

The result of bilateral cooperation between Mozambique and China, the cultural centre is the second largest of its kind in Africa. The building extends over a vast area of 20,000 square metres, housing various rooms for theatre, musical shows and corporate events. Of particular note is the large auditorium, with capacity for 1,500 spectators, as well as studios and rehearsal rooms dedicated to music and dance. The venue also has areas for arts and crafts exhibitions. This new space is expected to play a crucial role in the promotion and development of Mozambican culture, contributing to the flourishing of the cultural and creative industries in the country and the world. It is also hoped that it will not only ensure employment and income for cultural professionals, but also position Maputo as an attractive destination for events and business tourism. The celebration didn't end with the inauguration; the centre hosted a variety of artistic events celebrating the legacy of Samora Moisés Machel. Visitors were able to enjoy exhibitions, taste local cuisine, watch a film series dedicated to Samora Machel and take part in debates and shows. The inauguration event was attended by various personalities and organisations. Among them were Eldevina Materula, Minister of Culture and Tourism; Wang Hejun, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China; Fredson Bacar, Vice-Minister of Culture and Tourism; Eneas Comiche, President of Maputo City Council and Vicente Joaquim, Secretary of State in Maputo City, as well as other distinguished guests. At the heart of these celebrations was the feeling of unity and the strengthening of ties between the two nations, which, through culture, seek to build bridges and strengthen their friendship. The Mozambique-China Cultural Centre promises to be an inexhaustible source of knowledge and cultural exchange.

The range of panels at the Forum stood out for the richness and relevance of the topics covered, namely the academic contribution to training professionals, the trends and experiences of public relations in the Mozambican business context, the importance of building and consolidating branding in organisational strategies, the crucial role of communication in development and humanitarian programmes, and the influence of communication in promoting an effective organisational culture.

Despite the challenges inherent in putting such an innovative proposal into practice, such as initial resistance from some professionals and companies and the need for resources, the organisation proved to be resilient and determined, overcoming obstacles with the help of committed partners. Looking to the future, the organisation has outlined promising expectations. For 2024, the second edition of the COMARP Forum not only promises outstanding moments, but also the launch of a book - a compilation of the valuable contributions and approaches from the inaugural event. At the same time, there is the idea of recognising and rewarding the most outstanding players in their respective sectors throughout the year, an incentive for excellence and innovation. With the success of the event, expansion to other regions of Mozambique and even to other CPLP countries is
a real possibility. Cultural and linguistic links could establish a solid basis for sharing challenges and solutions on a wider scale. But more than just an event, the COMARP Forum aims to be a transformative force for the sector in Mozambique. The aim is to create an association that represents the interests of the profession and a firm commitment to producing content about the sector, elevating Mozambique to a Lusophone benchmark in terms of practices and trends in communication, marketing and public relations. COMARP thus not only strengthens the foundations of these areas in Mozambique, but also positions the country as an epicentre of innovation and transformation on the Lusophone scene. An initiative that will certainly continue to shape the future of communication in Mozambique and beyond.

A

Absa Bank Mozambique Building a sustainable present through savings
In recent years, we have seen several financial institutions investing in financial inclusion, enabling more and more people and companies to have access to financial products and services and to be able to use them, at an affordable cost, in a simple and transparent way. No less important is increasing financial literacy among these most vulnerable groups.
I
n line with the 8th Sustainable Development Goal - Decent Work and Economic Growth - Absa Bank Moçambique has dedicated a large part of its work to implementing actions that facilitate the financial knowledge of Mozambicans, such as the launch of the Financial Literacy Manual, the organisation of discussion forums on the subject aimed at young entrepreneurs and, in line with World Savings Day, which is celebrated every year on 31 October with the aim of alerting consumers to the need to discipline their family budgets and increase their savings, the Bank has been developing initiatives aimed at public schools to teach people how to save. In fact, teaching people to save is important because it helps them build a solid financial foundation, plan for the future, reduce financial stress and achieve their personal development goals. We know that savings knowledge in Mozambique is developing, and the country faces unique challenges related to the economy, culture and access to financial services. Now, in practice, how do you build this more sustainable path? Through financial man-
agement. It sounds complicated, but there's nothing like having an account manager who encourages you to regularly monitor your finances. If you don't have one, you can always make a habit of checking your bank statements, understanding the times of the month when you spend the most money, keeping financial records and adjusting your plans as necessary. In some communities, there is a tradition of informal savings, where people get together to form savings and credit groups. This can be an effective way of saving, especially in areas where access to formal financial services is limited. Absa has been working to guide people to seek professional financial advice when necessary, especially for more complex issues such as making savings and investments. In addition, it is important to adopt financial literacy practices to the specific realities of the Mozambican market, including the unique financial opportunities and challenges that people face on a daily basis.
THE BANK HAS SHARED 4 SAVINGS TIPS FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO START THEIR JOURNEY: BE PRAGMATIC AND REALISTIC In recent times, many families have had to make adjustments to their lives as goods, services and bank instalments have risen. Unfortunately, many families don't have savings to cope with unforeseen events and others may lose income and be forced to make adjustments.

Among other initiatives, Absa Bank has been undertaking actions aimed at public schools to teach saving habits. SET OBJECTIVES Knowing your financial situation and defining objectives allows you to make effective and rational decisions. You can decide to eliminate some expenses in order to build up savings for emergencies, so that you have more security when you face the coming times or even to go on that trip you've been dreaming of. Or you can choose to start saving for the long term, such as saving for your child's studies or for retirement. You'll realise that there are ways to save money without much effort, all you need is a well-defined strategy.
START SAVING! Once you have defined your financial objectives and know your current situation, it's time to start saving and investing in products that can increase your financial possibilities in the future. Outubro - October 2023 • Ed. 63 © Revista Xonguila | 59

A REGRA 50-30-20
2. Analise as suas despesas do mês an-
terior e categorize-as em três grupos – necessidades, desejos e poupanças.
October 2023 • Ed. 63 © Revista Xonguila | 63

THE 50-30-20 RULE AN ESSENTIAL TIP FOR BALANCED MANAGEMENT Written by: Sany Weng - Money Savvy Mozambique
Have you ever wondered how best to manage your finances? There are various methods and online tools available to help you, but today we'd like to introduce you to a simple method called the 50-30-20 rule. WHAT IS THE 50-30-20 RULE? Here's an explanation: 50 per cent of your income should go to your needs, 30 per cent to your desires and 20 per cent to your savings. Here's a guide you can use to start implementing this technique to manage your money on a daily basis: ALLOCATE 50 PER CENT TO NECESSITIES: It is recommended that you set aside 50 per cent of your income for your basic needs. Basic needs are essential things you can't do without, such as rent, mortgage, food, healthcare, transport, insurance and education. You shouldn't include things that you consider consum-
er products, such as holidays, outings or subscriptions. If you are spending more than 50 per cent of your income on basic needs, you should consider making some lifestyle changes to manage those needs without exceeding 50 per cent. For example, you could opt for a smaller house or use public transport instead of having your own car. ALLOCATE 30 PER CENT TO DESIRES: You can spend 30 per cent of your income on things that make your life more comfortable or help you achieve your dreams. For example, you can save money for a holiday, pay for your Netflix subscription or eat out with your
loved ones. These expenses are unnecessary, but they are things you choose to spend your money on. To determine whether an expense falls into this category, ask yourself: "Can I live without this?" If the answer is "yes", then it's probably a "want" and not a "need". ALLOCATE 20 PER CENT TO SAVINGS: Although this is the smallest category, it is not advisable to compromise it. To successfully achieve financial freedom, it is essential to pay off your debts as soon as possible and start saving money. The aim is to gradually reduce the amount you spend from this 20 per cent category on debt payments and direct it towards savings.
TO IMPLEMENT THE 50-30-20 RULE AND MANAGE YOUR FINANCES BETTER: 1. Start by calculating your after-tax 2. Analyse your expenses from the
4. Based on your analysis, make the necessary adjustments to your budget for this month and the following months, ensuring that you comply with the 50-30-20 rule.
3. Evaluate how much you spend in each category and see to what extent you fit into the 50-30-20 objective.
5. Remember that this rule is just a starting point and that you can adjust it to suit your unique circumstances and achieve your financial goals. It's essential to find the approach that best suits you in order to achieve those goals.
income.
previous month and categorise them into three groups - needs, wants and savings.
In short, the 50-30-20 rule is an effective budget management method for understanding your financial situation and objectives, but it is essential to personalise it to suit your individual circumstances.

The festival's ability to create a harmonious atmosphere where cultures blend gracefully shows the incredible power of dance as a unifying force. The inclusion of workshops and networking sessions provided an invaluable space for everyone to grow and collaborate. The Kaya Parties are one of the biggest highlights of the whole event, where we can enjoy dancing, meeting people and embarking on memorable evenings of great vibrancy and fun. From this year's themes, which brought together the old and the modern, from the usual to the traditional that is our capulana, everyone turned the runway into a fashion show, with lots of sparkle and colour; the walks around the city in "txopela" to get to know some of the sights, and ending the events and workshops with a visit to the Madre Maria Clara Home, which was the pinnacle of the festival, everything showed that, united and coming together little by little, we make many humans happy. Even better was the small dance class we were able to give the girls and nuns at the home. There is no doubt that those who were lucky enough to attend this year's festival will be eager to return in future editions, attracted by the enchanting emotions and the remarkable experience the festival offers. It was a very intense and soulful five days."

2ND EDITION OF MODA BAÍA three days of style, colour and expressiveness
In September, Baía Mall was transformed into a stage for colours, fabrics and styles, marking a remarkable moment in the world of fashion. The 2nd edition of the Moda Baía event not only met expectations, but exceeded them, fusing styles, cultures and art in a unified celebration that reflected the beauty and diversity of the Mozambican nation. ACT ONE: RECEPTION AND ELEGANCE On the first day, the stage was meticulously set, with marketing manager Lisié Champier welcoming guests in an authentic way, offering them roses carefully crafted by Isabel Tembe and linking them to the floral decor inspired by the spring-summer collections. The entertainment resounded in the melodious voices of Dama do Bling and Nelson Nhachungue, while prominent brands such as Fashion World and designer Omar Adelino presented their creations in a show where art and expressiveness merged. SECOND ACT: CULTURE AND ART IN THE SPOTLIGHT The second day unfolded with a variety of possibilities, where designers and brands such as Areia Branca, Uzuri, and Atija wove their art onto the catwalk, revealing national enthusiasm and talent. A cultural approach to fashion was evident, with Innova Studio providing a mixed show of painted art and contemporary dance, harmonising with the fashion shows. The theatricality that resonated through the hands of the Sico na Sico group and a vigorous musical note by Marlene Preta Negra also embellished the day, characterised by varied cultural expressions establishing a parallel between fashion, art and theatre.
ACT THREE: CHILDLIKE GRACE AND THE FUTURE OF FASHION The third day was characterised by the genuine smiles and captivated looks of the youngest, who, with a naturalness and a touch of childlike elegance, paraded clothes from shops such as Bebé Giro and Zippy. Innova Studio dedicated a specially adapted edition to the little ones, and the Bling Lady shared the stage with a mini ballerina, in a choreography that warmed the hearts of those present. The children's gift of pots of succulents and packets of seeds to their parents rounded off the event in a delicate way, weaving a green bow of hope and continuity into the event. Moda Baía was a celebration of culture, art and unity, with various brands offering prizes and vouchers, in a gesture that magnified the gratitude and appreciation of the participants and guests. Between fabrics, melodies and colours, the event established a link between the past, present and future of fashion in Mozambique, staging a consistent dialogue between tradition and contemporaneity. This was undoubtedly a remarkable chapter in the trajectory of Mozambican fashion, which will remain alive in the memories of those who experienced it and which will resonate in future editions of this distinguished event.

THE PONTA DO OURO CHILDREN'S PARK Fun and learning
In a world where the education of new generations is crucial, an interesting project is emerging in Ponta do Ouro. The dedicated Kanimambo Association wants to create a "Children's Park". Imagine a place not only geared towards preserving nature, but also designed to inspire, educate and mould the young minds of tomorrow through play.
T
his project, which is still in the planning stage, envisages a park divided into four areas, some of which are already fully operational. In the "Free Play Area", children will find the ideal environment to burn off energy and learn about social interaction. Thanks to contributions from the community, this space has swings, slides, tyres and ropes. The "Nature Space" is intended to be more than just a garden, it also functions as an open-air classroom, where themes such as environmental preservation and sustainability are addressed. The "Games Area", centred on sport and physical training, already has a bicycle track, donated to the park, and there are plans to add a multi-purpose pitch. The "Reading Space" will provide a tranquil environment for intellectual stimulation, fostering communication and artistic expression. Although the focus is on children aged 6 to 15, the park project is inclusive of the whole community. There is deep community involvement, not only in the financing and construction, but also in the maintenance and animation of the space. Suggested activities include tree planting and gymnastics classes. The conversion of organic waste into compost for sale is already underway, which will contribute to the sustainability of the space. In partnership with organisations such as the Lwandi Surf Association and the Txina Ponta singing and dancing group, the "Children's Park" aspires to be more than just a playground. It aims to be a pillar in the integral development of the children of Ponta do Ouro. In the "Children's Park", the present is sown in order to reap a bright future. With every smile, every game, every lesson, hope is renewed for a more harmonious, ecologically responsible and cohesive Mozambique.

CONSUMO DE AREIA UMA PRÁTICA SINGULAR E CONTROVERSA
E

SAND CONSUMPTION
A UNIQUE AND CONTROVERSIAL PRACTICE
I
n certain regions of Mozambique, it is not uncommon to come across people eating sand, especially women. Just a few years ago, it was even considered a growing trend, with sand being sold in bags or small paper cartridges in markets and other places. For the capital, it is said to come from Marracuene. It is usually washed, sieved to extract the coarsest sand and reduced to powder. Some followers of the practice believe that it is intended to satisfy desires that sometimes become addictions. Curiously, it is mainly pregnant women who express a specific desire to consume sand. There are also those who argue that it can aid digestion or offer a cure for certain illnesses, or relieve hunger, among other benefits. However, the consumption of such sand is not without its dangers and is therefore advised against by health professionals. It can contain impurities and heavy metals that are extremely harmful to health, and its ingestion can encourage the development of parasites,
trigger intestinal complications such as obstructions and perforations, as well as other serious illnesses. Despite growing awareness of these risks, many Mozambicans remain faithful to this ancestral custom. For many communities, especially in rural areas, it is a practice that is handed down from one generation to the next. Also known as geophagy, the practice of eating sand is not exclusive to Mozambique. It may be related to an eating disorder called pica, characterised by an abnormal need to consume non-food substances, the cause of which has been sought from various perspectives. The most widely cited nutritional theories attribute it to specific mineral deficiencies in the body. As well as being observed in African populations, pica has been noted in other parts of the world. In an era of increasing globalisation and cultural exchange, it is vital to strive for respect and understanding of popular customs, while promoting well-being and awareness of the associated risks.

A hora Maconde
The Maconde Hour
By Marcelo Panguana The stories in this book were inspired by a tragic reality that took place in the forests of Cabo Delgado during the national liberation war. The author simply dressed them up in fictional costumes, giving free rein to his creativity. The book doesn't exhaust the adventures of that great struggle, it just provides another reading among the many others that can be presented. As someone has said, the power not to forget has certainly become one of the most recognised hallmarks of Mozambican narrative. It is above all this importance of historical retention and preservation of our memory that should be attributed to this work.

SYSTEM K Directed by Renaud Barret, "System K" is a documentary that takes a deep dive into the vibrant world of street art in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kinshasa is a city marked by conflict, inequality and constant transformation, a context in which street artists emerge with unrivalled strength and creativity, using art as a weapon of expression and resistance. The title "System K" is a reference to "system débrouille", a French expression meaning "to get by", often used to describe the Congolese ability to adapt and overcome. Barret doesn't limit himself to being a mere observer; he allows the artists to share their stories, dreams and frustrations, creating an authentic and moving portrait of Kinshasa's art scene. Through his lens, we are invited to witness the transformative capacity of art, as well as the challenges that artists face
on a daily basis. The documentary stands out for its raw, unfiltered approach, avoiding romanticising artists. Instead, it presents a powerful narrative about resistance, expression and transformation. It's not just the graffiti or paintings that stand out; the documentary also shows performances and installations made with recycled materials, demonstrating the capacity for innovation of the artists in question. As for the cast, there are no "actors" in the traditional sense, as the protagonists are the artists themselves, which adds an extra layer of authenticity to the production. The film has already been shown at renowned festivals all over the world - such as the Sea International Film Festival - and reminds us of the transformative power of art and human resilience in the face of adversity in life and in the world.
