A

Elas viram-me e ficaram subtilmente envergonhadas, porém sorridentes.

THE STORY OF THE
‘MOZAMBICAN WOMAN’ PHOTO Written by:
Jaime Álvaro The reader likely knows little or nothing at all about the origins of the photo depicting a woman with a face painted in the Macua fashion, sporting a capulana headscarf and bearing a shy yet beautiful smile, a photo that is nevertheless widely used — especially on celebratory dates related to women — in Mozambique and in other corners of the world. This image, familiar to all, very quickly became a popular go-to visual reference of the Mozambican woman, with no indication of the identity of the author or of the woman photographed. Today, Xonguila brings you the story behind the photograph told by the author himself who, for the first time, takes credit for his work.
T
he photo was taken by Moisés Oliveira, a 37-year-old Brazilian advertising copywriter and photographer. He was born into a humble family in the east side of São Paulo, in the Jardim Sinhá favela. His childhood was tough and spent on the outskirts, between the Zilah Spósito favela in Minas Gerais, and the Da Baronesa favela in Belo Horizonte. He has a degree in Advertising and Marketing and specialised in Creative Writing. In 2009, aged just 23, he travelled to Maputo, accompanied by a friend who encouraged him to go and work as a copywriter at advertising agency DDB Moçambique. The initial contract was short — just one year — but he ended up falling in love with the country and subsequently lived here for four more years. His coming to Africa was the beginning of a new life and propelled him into the career of his dreams. He is now married — in fact, he met his wife in Mozambique — and has two children. He currently lives in Portugal, but dreams of visiting Japan one day, and his favourite book is the Bible. “My experience in Maputo was fabulous. I was very young when I arrived. I was only 23 years old. But still, I was able to make the most of that experience and get to know a different culture, a different people with different customs. For me, it was one of the best experiences of my life and I really miss that time”. Despite the challenges he had to face, Moisés says that he was warmly received in Mozambique and that the simplicity and joy of the Mozambican people, even in the face of hardships, eased his adaptation and made him feel at home always. He also recognises the role of friends throughout that adaptation process: “After Vasco Rocha, Director of DDB, I had a colleague there, our great friend Azagaia, who unfortunately passed away. He was the person who helped me a lot during that adaptation, especially with the Portuguese variant

spoken in Mozambique. Because, besides being a musician, he was also an advertising copywriter in that same company. He looked at my texts, gave me tips, helped me write in a way that was closer to the Mozambican lingo”. THE CHERRY ON TOP OF THE CAKE This is how Moisés describes his time at one of the biggest advertising agencies in Mozambique: “In my seven years working at advertising agencies, DDB really was the cherry on top of the cake. Because it was there that I was able to build a solid, more consistent body of work”. Moisés joined DDB Moçambique as a senior copywriter and, shortly after, began acting as creative supervisor, and was then promoted to Creative Director of the company, a position he held until he left the company in 2014. “It was a wonderful experience, even more so because I was extremely young, only 26 years old and managing a team of almost 20 creatives. This experience added a lot of value to my profession. We won a lot of awards”, he added. Under his directorship, DDB won awards at several international festivals, among them an honourable mention in the world’s most prestigious advertising awards ceremony, the Cannes Lions festival. Moisés moved to Portugal in 2014, where he now runs his own digital communication studio. “Before starting my entrepreneurial journey, my own business, DDB Moçambique was a great school [for me], with over 60 employees. I have a lot of affection and respect for Vasco Rocha, who gave me that great opportunity, who took me to Mozambique and helped me with everything I needed to adapt in that country. As such, DDB holds a very special place in my heart. Of all the value-add I gained during my career at advertising agencies, DDB was undoubtedly responsible for the largest

part”, he stressed. It was at DDB that this copywriting editor developed his photography skills. He went from amateur to professional photographer. “Photography didn’t just transform my professional life; it transformed my life as a whole, because since I was a child, I liked observing those with a camera in hand. I didn’t have the opportunity to have one early on, but I liked to see people with a camera while taking pictures and I liked seeing the pictures as well”, explained the documentary and journalistic photographer. During his stay in Mozambique, Moisés travelled to several provinces in the three main regions of the country, where he recorded various snapshots of daily life. Images of events of all kinds, images of artists, politicians, professionals in various fields; street images, images of anything really, of any scene and even of anonymous people. Curiously, his most famous masterpiece is the photograph of an anonymous woman whom he calls his muse, and whom he christened as ‘Mozambican Woman’. But where, when, and how was the photograph taken? RELIVING THAT MOMENT Moisés is one of those photographers who never leaves home without his camera in his backpack.
And likewise, he never returns home without new images. He tries to make the most out of every arising opportunity to freeze a moment for posterity. It was in this spirit that he managed to take a photo that, after its first publication on a blog, went viral on the Internet, becoming a symbol of the 7 April — Mozambican Women’s Day. The photo he entitled ‘Mozambican Woman’ was taken precisely 12 years ago. “On that day, 19 October 2011, the statue of Samora Machel would be inaugurated in front of the Maputo City Council, and personalities such as Graça Machel and the president of the country at the time, Armando Guebuza, would be present at the ceremony. I needed to go there and photograph something, anything. I wanted to document the occasion and, who knows, get some good shots of the President”. Moisés got much more than one good image; he managed to capture a story, a unique moment that forever marked his professional life. “That day, I spotted a women’s dance group among other groups, which was there to brighten that special moment. They were dressed in orange colours, and I decided to photograph them. They saw me and were subtly embarrassed, but kept smiling. I took no more than 20 photos of that group, but one of them marked this day forever. Not even

the photographs of [President] Guebuza or Graça Machel, which I also managed to take, made me as happy as seeing that portrait, [the portrait] of that lady with the capulana on her head, the paint around her eyes and a gentle smile on her face”, he described. For Moisés, the photo ‘Mozambican Woman’ represents an effort to get closer to the Mozambican people, for whom he nurtures a special affection. “For me, that photo permanently registered as an image that gave me a passport of sorts, to that closeness with the culture, that friendship with the Mozambican people”. FAME WITHOUT THE CREDIT The Brazilian photographer claims authorship of the photo that quickly spread across the internet and mysteriously became a reference, a representative image of Mozambican women. “It’s a photograph I lost control of. It spread across the internet quite quickly and I was never able to have a kind of control over that photograph again. I didn’t try to control it either, I let the image wander around”. Moisés claims that he never received credit for the photo, which is now widely used for various purposes, including advertising, without any authorisation and without any compensation, thus deliberately violating copyright. “I have already seen a painting of a woman on a mural in Namaacha inspired by that photo. That actually made me happier, more honoured and prouder than the many other shares on the internet; the use of the image for advertising purposes did not make me as happy”. Moisés regrets and condemns the improper use of the image, especially on commemorative dates associated with women, such as 7 April — Mozambican Women’s Day, and 8 March — International Women’s Day. “I never authorized the commercial use of that image, seeing that I don’t even have authorization of the subject herself in the photograph. Therefore, I never sold that photograph, I never received absolutely any value for the commercial use of it. All the people who have used it commercially have used it improperly”. Moisés does not expect any compensation for the photograph. But he hopes that this article will reach the original ‘Mozambican Woman’, and that it will serve as a tool to claim his rights for the use of his image for commercial and advertising purposes. “The worst affected by this misuse for commercial and advertising purposes is not me — it’s her, because it is her image that is being used, and she deserves, indeed, to be paid for this use. Any gain that could be had would be for her and not for me”. Even though he knows absolutely nothing about the woman who became his muse, Moisés dreams of a future reunion.

Do Director / From the Director Prezados leitores,
Dear readers,
April has arrived, bringing with it a mix of traditions and celebrations. In Mozambique, this month is dedicated to the Mozambican woman who, through work, struggle and perseverance, is leaving her mark on a society undergoing transformation, in which a more egalitarian future is gradually being built. We honour and praise her strength, dedication and courage, which drive the progress of our country.
In this 57th edition of Xonguila, we talked to author Lisié Champier, a revealing conversation about interesting aspects of her career and details of her most recent work, ‘A Actual Teresinha’ (‘Teresinha To- day’). We also present testimonials of women leaders at Absa Bank who share their experiences in the banking sector, and, for complete relaxation, we invite you to embark on our expedition to Machangulo Villas, a charming place that offers a unique and unforgettable experience that will create everlasting memories. The magazine still covers the ‘Biodiversity Wall’ project, inaugurated by Millennium bim and partners as part of a campaign to promote environmental protection. It is all this and more, as you will see, that we bring to you here.
This year, both the holy month of Ramadan and the celebration of Easter fell in April, creating a temporal encounter between these two religions. For many Mozambicans, and despite the diverse cultural mosaic that is Mozambique, this was a shared moment of reflection and spirituality, of renewal and hope, of family and friends gathering to renew ties of mutual understanding and unity. April also brings a cooler and milder weather. Nature, in all its exuberance, begins to make room for retreating and introspection that the cold weather favours.
Votos de uma excelente leitura.

Absa Bank

Women in Banking Testimonials from leaders at Absa Bank What is it like to be a leader in the national banking sector? Denise Cruz, Acting Director of Channels: Being a female leader in the Mozambican banking sector can have unique challenges, but also offer the opportunity to lead change and contribute to the economic development of the country. Each of the women who, like me, are leading departments and making decisions relevant to the future of the country, now have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the country’s economic development by leading innovative and sustainable projects, promoting entrepreneurship and collaborating to improve financial inclusion. However, it is still challenging to be a Leader and a Woman in the various sectors, as we still face prejudices and gender stereotypes that may hinder our career growth. But our characteristic resilience and dedication drives us to work harder and harder to prove our capability and face challenges along the way. At Absa, we have a very strong culture of gender equity and career progression based on merit. Although there are 50% male and 50% female employees across the Bank, the top leadership consists of 55% women. It is an honour to serve as an example and motivation for other courageous women who aspire to grow and lead in the different sectors in which they operate! How does your institution approach gender equality in terms of recruitment and promotions? Hanifa Hassangy, Director of People and Culture: We are the national financial institution that has the same number of women and men in its workforce and management positions, which demonstrates our positioning on gender equality. We have a strong culture of gender equity; we believe in the competence and quality of our staff and are constantly working to ensure that each of our Employees feels valued and growing. The investment in our People over the last few years is now reflected in the latest appointments to the top leadership of the Bank, from Managing Director to the four new members appointed, all of whom were the result of internal career progression. In terms of talent management, we have implemented programmes such as the Graduates Programme and Ready to Work over the last few years, focusing, above all, on training talented young professionals, both young men and women, for the labour market. What can be done to achieve gender equality in Mozambique? Patrícia Darsan, Corporate and Investment Banking Director: I believe that to achieve real gender equality in Mozambique, we first need a change in mentality that will allow us to look at gender in an equitable way, thereby openly and fairly create opportunities for women to show their potential and value. It also entails a coordinated and continuous effort to change the paradigm that begins within the family and then spreads to various key sectors of society, such as education and health. It is important to guarantee equal access to education, from primary school through to higher education, for girls and young women across the country. This includes encouraging them to learn while seeking to eliminate the social barriers that prevent school attendance, such as early marriage and early pregnan-

cy. It should be noted that many of the challenges women face begin in the family, where they are taught from an early age that their role in society is to care for the children and the home, while the opposite sex provides for the household and focuses on professional growth. This social paradigm must be eliminated. On the other hand, as for health, women must have access to quality reproductive and sexual health services that enable them to make informed and conscious decisions about having children. We have a long way to go to achieve gender equality in our country, since there are still great challenges to overcome, such as access to employment, equal pay, access to growth opportunities and to leadership positions and gender discrimination within the workplace. However, there are already some examples of women who are driving this change and who have distinguished themselves in leadership positions, both in the public and private sectors. This is an indication that a paradigm shift is indeed happening and that it will eventually need to be accelerated. I believe this can be more quickly achieved by implementing policies that encourage gender equality in education and in the workplace. How is financial education important for women’s development in Mozambique? Martha Humbane, Director of Retail and Business Banking: Financial education is indeed critical for women to be able to make informed and responsible financial decisions. This is especially important for women who actively manage a household budget and contribute to supporting their families, as well as those who are committed to their projects and businesses. Financial education provides women with the basic tools to structure the management of collective and personal needs, enabling them to effectively control their household budget. This translates into intelligent spending, setting limits, calculating the cost of basic needs, and planning other expenses. This dynamic makes it possible for them to tailor-make their financial independence, whilst promoting saving habits that will allow for future investments. Moreover, financial education may stimulate entrepreneurship among women who, with the right tools and prudent financial management, may have greater economic empowerment and actively participate in the country’s economic activity, contributing to the well-being of their families and to sustainable economic growth. Therefore, financial education is a powerful tool to empower women in Mozambique to achieve their financial and life goals, reduce poverty and increase their economic independence. When widely disseminated, financial education can bring benefits to the whole of society, contributing to a more prosperous and equitable future for all. To what extent can training women help develop the national economy? Tânia Oliveira, Director of Marketing and Corporate Relations : A woman’s level of education strongly determines her family's living standards, as well as the education, future and potential opportunities for her sons and daughters. Women, especially in developing countries, play a central role in the survival and

economy of a family, both as breadwinners and as managers of the family’s life and resources. When women, especially those who are not in a situation of poverty and exclusion, cannot work due to disability or illness, the survival of their own family is at stake. A situation that places women on the frontlines of uncertainty and rising living costs, as we are currently experiencing. But these conditions are not inevitable — there are ways around them. And this should be a challenge that galvanises Mozambican society as a whole.
Financial education is a powerful tool to empower women in Mozambique to achieve their financial and life goals, reduce poverty and increase their economic independence. — Martha Humbane
Investing in women’s training and the promotion of gender equality in different domains is the key to developing our economy. As such, it should be an objective integral to the management strategy of companies. At Absa, we have achieved the goal we set for ourselves and today our staff is 50% women. We want to capitalise on their potential in specific areas through training and offering the same opportunities. I think that establishing goals is a necessary means to promote a more balanced and more equitable organisation. Diversity enables us to make better decisions which automatically result in better products, better services, a better value proposal for our customers and, consequently, an economic benefit for the Bank and for society. Education and training have a role in empowering women and breaking the cycle that exposes them — especially them — to poverty. We must allocate resources to where they make a difference. This is a necessary investment to accelerate the development of our society, improve poverty levels and reduce inequalities. It is proven that more egalitarian societies are also more economically developed.
And how do you address your female Employees’ need to reconcile their professional and personal lives? Akila Ghumra, Acting Director of Operations: We are an organisation that regards the wellbeing of its Employees as a priority. After the pandemic, we permanently adopted the hybrid working model, allowing new ways of working to emerge. We believe that it is no longer a question of striking a balance between professional and personal life, but rather of achieving harmony between the two. We have worked continuously to improve our value proposition to Employees. In the specific case of maternity leave, and because we recognise that it is an important and unique moment in the life of a mother, we have created conditions for our Employees to take three months maternity leave, instead of the standard two months stipulated in law. Also in this regard, we increased paternity leave to five days in recognition of a man’s role in supporting women and family harmony. More recently, we created a discussion forum where we bring together men and women to explore topics, exchange ideas and debate relevant issues for the growth of our Employees, both personally and professionally. We also encourage teams to have a balanced life, to look not only at career, but also at health. We run initiatives where Employees participate in sports activities for physical health, we provide mental health helplines for colleagues to contact in times of stress and uncertainty, and we encourage diversity and inclusion in the organisation to create a more dynamic work environment.

do país. Maleiane incentivou os premiados a continuarem aprimorando a sua performance e a servirem de fonte de inspiração para os agentes das artes em prol do sector das Indústrias Culturais e Criativas no país. airports company) and Maputo City Council, through the National Administration of Conservation Areas and other entities. Supporting the protection of biodiversity and environmental conservation is one of the key action pillars of the Bank’s Social Responsibility programme “Mais Moçambique pra Mim” (‘More Mozambique for Me’), which has been implemented for a few years now, registering a significant impact on the lives of Mozambicans across the country, from north to south.
The murals are intended to disseminate messages supporting the fight against poaching in Mozambique, encourage biodiversity conservation and safeguard the marine and forest ecosystems and the environment in general.

Lisié Champier A conversation with the author Where does your passion for writing come from? Could you tell us a little about your journey so far? My passion for writing goes back to my early school years, but it was on 14 July 2016 that I took a crucial step to get to where I am today. I created the Facebook page “Tu consegues fazer lindo” (“You can make it beautiful”), where I would write texts inspired by photos found on Google, as a way to relate to the world and the need to learn more, in search of a healthier, friendlier life and with tools to manage it in all aspects. In short, I wanted to be someone of value. The first text I wrote and had the courage to post on social media was inspired by a beautiful photograph of a hummingbird. With that research [of the image], I discovered that this small bird could teach us the delicacy of living. Currently, I must have over 1,000 texts published on social media.
To write, I let my heart and soul speak and add a good dose of research.
What inspires you to write? How do you find the right words to turn a thought into writing? I find endless inspiration in nature and consider myself a tireless enthusiast. I believe that nature is the greatest representation of life, which is why I learn to write poetry. To write, I let my heart and soul speak
particular. For example, I enjoy learning about the behaviours of living beings and the similarities among them; I research and get excited about relationships, curiosities, and destinations. I write about everything I like learning about and then share it, as I believe it will be interesting for other people too. My creative process
and add a good dose of research. What do you enjoy writing about the most, and how would you describe your creative process? I write about nature in general, and about life in
varies depending on how I feel. Sometimes I write the text first and then find an image that fits. Other times, I find the image first — or someone suggests one to me — and inspiration comes by looking at it closely and freely. There are difficult days too, when I miss writing or feel the need to do it but am exhausted and blocked. On those occasions, I don’t insist. Writing has such a deep meaning for me that it is as if I am meeting my Divine Self. Tell us a bit about your most recent work. My most recent work is “A actual Teresinha” (‘Teresinha today’), my second book. It is a literary work written in the poetic novel genre, and it is a continuation of the first book, “Teresinha, uma vida em Moçambique” (‘Teresinha, a life in Mozambique’). We know that writing is not your only passion in the arts. What other artistic forms fascinate you, and what other projects have you been involved in? Apart from writing, I am passionate about plants, photography and art. As part of the Teresinha Project, which I’ve authored, I created an arm focused on art and several others focused on photography, all of which are always mixed into my texts.

What is the role of social networks in your life, and how does the digital world influence your practice? I stand by the controlled use of social networks, as long as they contribute to our spiritual, intellectual and cultural growth. For me, everything started through this medium, and that’s why I support it. How do you see the publishing market in Mozambique? What do you consider to be the main challenges for those who wish to publish? Like everything in life, nothing is easy or for free, but I never gave in to obstacles; I think that, deep down, they’ve always propelled me. When I started writing, I decided that I should share my work with those who might be interested. At that time, I came up with the idea of creating a literary and photographic exhibition to donate to central hospitals in the country. With the help of partners and photographer Mariano Silva, I managed to donate 24 framed works composed of poetic texts and photographs to each of three [major] hospitals in the country: Maputo, Beira and Nampula. Do you have other professional occupations apart from the arts? How do you reconcile these two worlds? I am currently the marketing manager of Baía Mall, which is also a passion, as there is room to bring to life many projects and campaigns that we create every month. I love doing social projects. What are your plans for the future? Future plans include directing and producing a film of my own, entitled Teresinha — Uma Vida em Moçambique.

A

INÊS VIEIRA, NEW ORLEANS, USA Written by:
Eliana Silva She left Mozambique on 1 January 2015, hoping that the new year would usher in a new life for her. When she began her university studies, a world of scent, rhythm and flavour opened up for her: Inês Vieira, a Mozambican chef.
I
nês’s youthfulness gave her wings. With a degree in culinary arts and business management and a master’s in world food culture and mobility, she has been hopping from one place to another since she was 20. For the moment, she has settled on the banks of the Mississippi River in New Orleans, in the United States of America. Aware that the idea she had of that country was largely shaped by the media, Inês Vieira soon realised that not everything was as she previously thought, since the messaging in films, television and books do not reflect the whole picture. “Being in New York is very different from being in Chicago or New Orleans, even though the geographical distances [be-

tween them] are relatively small. The style and quality of life are completely different”, she tells us via a WhatsApp voice note, continuing, “I think I had more of an idea of finding a certain environment and of things being much more functional. The truth is, I live in one of the poorest states in the country — Louisiana — and there are some issues that come up that I wasn’t expecting and that affect everyday life quite a bit. One of the reasons I chose to come to New Orleans was actually the gastronomy, because I had a reference with many references. I learnt a lot about the way people consume their food, and here, in the south, I found the answer to understand that better. Jambalia’s

dish, for example, has a connection with our well-known ‘arroz malandrinho’, or tomato rice, but with more ingredients, such as vegetables”, she adds. Inês’s dedication to cooking was challenged when the restaurant industry took a significant hit during the Covid-19 pandemic. The gastronomy sector was, in fact, one of the most severely impacted, with thousands of restaurants closing their doors, which made Inês Vieira’s career very difficult. While the young chef was rethinking her career, she decided to study again, this time for a master’s degree. Although she had heard that this was a male-dominated sector, it was only whilst pursuing her love for cooking that Inês realised that being a woman, and a young one at that, was one of the biggest challenges she faced. Concerning her positioning and career development, she would like to implement a project focusing on food education: “Educating more people on how to eat in a varied and balanced way, focusing on locally produced ingredients. I would really like to preserve our gastronomic memory”. From Niassa to Ponta d’Ouro, the chef would like to permanently capture the best of what is done in Mozambique and make everyone understand the wealth of our national flavours. How? By spending more time with those who cook our recipes. “I always really like getting out of my comfort zone to learn more things. I try to follow chefs I identify with and restaurants where I can always learn. Being somewhere between academic papers — especially on topics we don’t have as much knowledge of — and in conversation with other people, is the best way for me to develop. Exposing myself to difference is the best way for me to grow”.

There is a living relic off the coast of Mozambique
he Coelacanth is a prehistoric f ish that is considered a true living relic. It was f irst found off the coast of Mozambique in 1938, after being considered extinct for over 65 million years. Since then, its discovery has fascinated biologists and nature enthusiasts around the world. It is a medium-sized f ish with a sturdy body and a dorsal f in that extends across the spine. Its skin is covered with hard, protruding scales, and the colour of a bluish grey, which allows it to camouflage itself in the depths of the sea. This prehistoric f ish can approximately reach up to two meters in length and weigh about 100 kilograms. One of the most curious features of the Coelacanth is its ability to survive at great depths, up to 800 meters below the sea surface. This is facilitated by special organs that help it regulate body density, allowing it to float at will in the depths of the sea. Another interesting feature of the Coelacanth is its unique bone structure. Unlike other f ish, the Coelacanth does not have a swim bladder, which gives it an advantage in surviving in deep water. Instead, it has a set of special bones that act as a kind of diving vest, allowing it to float effortlessly, which helps save energy. Despite its historical and biological importance, the Coelacanth is considered a rare and threatened species. Due to its ability to survive at great depths, it is very diff icult to study, and little is known about its population and life habits. In addition, overf ishing, habitat degradation, and pollution have contributed to the decline of this population worldwide. The discovery of the Coelacanth in Mozambique was an important landmark in the history of marine biology and, since then, the country has become one of the few places in the world where it can be seen with some regularity. The coast of Mozambique is a privileged environment for observing the Coelacanth due to the presence of corals and sandbanks, its natural habitats.

Melanina (‘Melanin’)
Aimed at young adults and adult readers alike, the book tells the story of Melanina’s search for her place in the world. Black and struggling with countless prejudices, she longed for inclusion in places where she didn’t fit in. As a result, she was always daydreaming, imagining a world where it was possible for her to dream and achieve by being uniquely herself, without having to conform to others. She could just be Melanina, a girl living in a favela in Rio de Janeiro. She wanted to be the colour of the moon, a light shining in the darkness. She was born different, a difference that made her entire body ache. It pained her not to be all she could be. She possessed a pure and crystalline soul, and her enormous green eyes found in samba the hope for a vast and different world. “A bigger world, where one could fit all the dreams of the small universe that is each person” — just like the protagonist, as described by author Tânia Tomé. 108 | Revista Xonguila © Ed. 57 • Abril - April 2023

This paper focuses on the local artistic production in the visual arts and its imbrication with the global, through the interaction between national and transnational actors. Based on notions of post-coloniality and subalternity proposed by Said (1979), Appiah (1997), Appadurai (1988), Bhabha (1998, 2001) and Spivak (2010), it examines the structuring, production, dissemination, and legitimation of the visual arts in Mozambique, capturing its nuances and structural characteristics in two distinct periods: 1975-1986 and 1987-2016. This choice of periods reflects distinct paradigmatic moments in the political, economic and cultural history of Mozambique. In fact, it is about examining the aestheticization of the Mozambican social environment, which can help us understand the arts dynamics in the country.
