The course of a life can be changed by a variety of reasons. Change may sometimes be driven by our profession, or else by our family, or even love. Januário Faustino decided to leave Maputo six years ago because he didn’t want to be in a long-distance relationship. The solution was to head to Cologne, Germany, to join his girlfriend. Six years later, this IT technician shares his story with us.

The truth is that Januário Faustino wanted to invest in his professional development. As a young IT technician, he had already worked in a few local companies, but he felt lacking in knowledge, especially due to the constant innovation and demands of the sector. Ultimately, Germany became his destination because his girlfriend was already living there, and they both knew they didn’t want to be far from each other.

Germany hadn’t been his first choice. Like any story, the path of this computer scientist had different chapters. Halfway through his journey, he spent a year in Portugal, and returned to

Mozambique for the same length of time to get over a homesickness for his birthplace, the Land of the Good People.

“In truth, I left to gain more knowledge and had no plans to live in Europe. But since my girlfriend was in Cologne, we decided not to have a long-distance relationship”, Januário tells us.

Aware that it was important to maintain continuous professional development, Januárioyah no nevertheless acknowledges that, in the Technology sector, it’s hard to keep up with every single development. It is exactly this challenge that keeps him on the lookout for more training programmes or participation in workshops, something that “is not easy for Mozambican employers to understand”, he says.

Confident in the power of technology and in the value-add that knowledge exchange brings, Januário Faustino reveals “his most beautiful project” yet, one that will positively impact social growth in his country. The computer scientist reveals this dream to us: “I would like to build a community school in my place of birth, because I believe that everyone who knows how to read and write can have a chance in this life, otherwise the doors will be closed.”
