“As minhas três irmãs

Estava a usar o tablet do meu sobrinho. Fizemos as fotos, e gostei muito. Incentivaram-me a comprar uma máquina fotográfica.”

er beautiful brown eyes are like a window to her soul, displaying the beauty of a girl-woman, while demystifying the genesis of her art. The first few seconds of conversation are significant to understand the power and magic of Thandi Pinto's gaze. Either through her photographic lens or through her “natural” observation of life stories that intersect in her daily experiences, this young artist communicates with and for the world in a very expressive way, as does her gaze. Thandy Lúcia Pinto, or simply Thandi Pinto, as she is known in the artistic universe, is a young artist on the rise who uses photographs in impressive collage works. The DNA of art has always lived within her. Sometimes a little dormant and other times more vividly present, but always showing that Thandi was born for making art. “I think I've been an artist since I was born. My mother, in addition to being a visual artist, does many other things that are connected with art. She has done interior decoration and fashion. My mother's brothers are also visual artists, and my sisters are all artists too”, she explained. Despite growing up surrounded by artists, Thandi needed time to find her footing in this world. “My three sisters were connected to art. I was the only one in the family that didn't fit in with drawing or painting. However, I always did small things like decorating family parties, for example, and handmade earrings. It was a little frustrating in a way, because I wanted to be an artist too, like everyone else.” Her mother tried to help her find her footing in music, thinking that this may be the artistic expression in which Thandi could flourish. In her early teens, her mother enrolled her in music school. However, Thandi eventually gave up. “It´s not that I didn’t like making music – I did – but following music rules, rules like scales, was not for me. I liked more intuitive things. I ended up giving up on music.” THE ART OF CREATING NARRATIVES THROUGH COLLAGE Whilst still in the process of finding her artistic self, Thandi Pinto took part, in 2017, in a walk through the streets of Maputo city with a photography group called “VêSó”, at the invitation of Neide Tsenane. This experience sparked her love for photography. “We walked through the Central Railway Station. At the time, I didn't even have a camera.

I was using my nephew's tablet. We took pictures, and I really enjoyed it. That drove me to buy a camera.” Two years later, the young artist bought a camera and began to place photography in a more special place in her life. She took a course under the guidance of Mozambican photographer Mário Macilau, but quickly found out that photography alone could not tell the stories that her artistic mind wanted to convey. Thandi has always been curious about the work done by one of her sisters, a professional graphic designer. When her sister was away from the computer, Thandi tried to understand Photoshop better and, little by little, learnt how to use the program. One fine day, while browsing through her social media, Thandi saw a collage on Instagram and was fascinated. “When I saw that, I noticed it looked like it was made using Photoshop. And so I turned to the program to try and do something similar. That is how I came to do my first collage, but it didn't turn out very well. I then tried a few more times, using photographs sourced from the internet, and saw that it was well received by the public on social media. But I felt like there were a lot of people doing it [already] and didn't think it was extraordinary.” In 2020, with the pandemic taking over the country and the world, Thandi began to go out more to photograph. It was like therapy. Her participation in the “DemocraSEE” Workshop, organized by the South African platform “Phototool” that year, made her more confident about her photographic work, and encouraged her to use her own photos in the collages, rather than photos sourced from the internet (as she had done previously), in addition to allowing her to validate and effectively recognize her work. Graduated in linguistics from the Faculdade de Letras e Ciências Sociais (“Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences”) of Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, this young 31-year-old artist is a lover of surrealism. It is not difficult to notice it her works: the renouncing of standardized images of the real in favour of constructing narratives that go beyond the limits of imagination. “I am inspired by my dreams. I like surrealism since I was very little: unlikely scenarios, scenarios that don't exist but are neverthe-

less probable. I mix what I see in my dreams with everyday life.” The artist saw in collage the best medium to tell stories, uniting any number of photographs into a single image. “Collages give more freedom. In collage, I can do anything I want. Tell a complete story with an image. Collage gives me even more flexibility to tell stories and create narratives.” Fruit, flowers and cheerful colours contrast with the black and white photographs present in the artist's work. “I tell people's stories, and usually these people carry painful stories. And since I really like contrasts, the colours, fruit, flowers and nature help to bring a contrast to the sad reality of the characters”. ACTIVELY DRAWING HER ARTISTIC TRAJECTORY IN COLOUR Despite her short time in the arts, Thandi Pinto has already taken considerable steps towards her professional growth. Her first photographic exhibition took place in 2017 at the Centro Cultural Brasil-Moçambique. Since then, several individual and collective works have marked her career. She recently participated in the collective exhibition called “Visão do Paraíso” (“A Vision of Paradise”) with the work “I love Maputo”, exhibited at that same cultural centre. Thandi Pinto also has her work exposed on the largest online platform related to visual arts, Artsy, which is very exciting for her. “It's been a very good experience. Apparently, I´m being well received. Of the six works on display, three were sold to three separate collectors.” The artist has an artistic residency at Tofo, in Inhambane, next month, and several other projects lined up, both national and international, that fill her with expectations about the growth of her work. And because she doesn't want to be the only one to grow up in the artistic world, Thandi Pinto has dreams that go beyond herself. “I would love to serve, in some way, as an inspiration to other women artists who lack the courage to show their work or have somehow been silenced. I want to be able to help, so that other artists have the same opportunities as me to be able to exhibit their art”, she concluded.

Do Director From the Director Prezado leitor,

Dear Reader,

Once again, we find ourselves in June, the month in which the most emblematic day in the history of Mozambique took place: June 25, 1975. On this date, at the Machava stadium in Maputo, President Samora Machel proclaimed the complete and utter independence of the country, which we will briefly recall in this edition. Approximately five years later, on the 16th of the same month, the end of the circulation of the Portuguese Escudo was decreed, and the creation of the Mozambican Metical as the new official currency was announced. June is also children´s month (June 1st, International Children's Day; June 16th, African Children's Day), during which we celebrate these delicate beings that symbolize the hope of a society, the joy of life, the sap that will feed the future of our country.

For this current edition, nr. 48, we spoke to the well-known stand-up comedy group Improriso, a dynamic group that has been promoting national comedy in a remarkable way in our country. We show the curious and out-of-the-box art of Thandi Pinto and, as always, we pay attention to the tourism sector, with our regular column penned by Neyde Cuna. We also introduce Dr. Moz, a digital platform that aims to make it easier for any user to search for services in the health and wellness sectors. As in previous editions, other interesting articles can be found here, such as, for example, those covering the musical project of Chico António and the Austrian band The Next, the International Fado Festival that took place in Maputo and the Memories Gastro Bar, a new eatery in the centre of that city, with a lively atmosphere and pleasant gastronomic suggestions. banco assume, desde a sua génese, o desafio de ser um parceiro de referência perante as comunidades onde exerce actividade, tendo em vista a promoção do desenvolvimento social e económico das mesmas, em linha com a estratégia definida. Preservar a nossa arte é manter a nossa história viva.

a música.

ince its inception, the Bank has taken on the challenge of being a reference partner for the communities where it operates, with a view to promoting their social and economic development, in line with the defined strategy. Promoting culture and stimulating the creative industry is one of our great pillars of citizenship. Our heart is African, and art and culture have always been in our DNA. This has been clearly demonstrated in our commitment to contribute to a society without inequalities and with high levels of social, cultural and economic development. Preserving our art is to keep our history alive. Our history is our identity, and that is what defines us as a country. We intend to always be at the forefront of promoting culture, as well as forging pathways to the construction of a more inclusive narrative about the history of modern art. We have supported the Xiquitsi Project since 2017 and have closely followed its growth over time. This is no ordinary initiative; it´s quite unique, in that it´s a platform for social inclusion that gives life and hope to children, adolescents and young adults, without questioning their social condition. It is a way of showing that we are all worthy, and that we are all equal before an art as unique as music. There are just over 100 children aged between 6 and 15, and another half with young people at the beginning of their careers and often without a plan for their future. At Xiquitsi, they can have multiple possibilities, and we have registered successful cases of young people who had access to grants to study abroad as a result of their participation in the project . Society frequently regards the banking sector as pertaining only to finance. By having such a close relationship with Xiquitsi, we show another side to us, which enables us to present our pillars of citizenship and other values we believe in, such as inclusion, support for culture and equality. Values that are very important for sustainable development and help steer the Bank. In addition, creativity is one of the skills that these new times ask for, so that we are all prepared, passionate and ready. We take this issue further, not only in supporting culture and art, but also in terms of innovation, and how to make things happen from the inside out. We also seek to involve

our customers in our citizenship projects, inviting them to attend art exhibitions which have had our support, communicating our actions and, in the specific case of Xiquitsi, inviting them to concerts. Learning, teaching, rehearsing and effectively practicing citizenship can happen in many spheres of everyday life and can involve people of different ages. It should have such a transformative impact that the implications of these actions extend beyond the personal/local context, and play a positive role in building the foundations of a better world. It is extremely important to understand that we are an institution that works with people for people and, therefore, establishing these relationships, being able to dematerialize and complement our daily lives is, without a doubt, a force that inspires us. The biggest benefit of Absa´s annual investment in Xiquitsi is seeing the growth of the project and the personal development of its students. Children who once looked at the project as a means to secure a daily meal are, today, children whose way of being is future-forward, with dreams to achieve. In our passionate, courageous and prepared way of seeing the world, we know that resilience is one of the greatest strengths that an institution like Absa must have, and this has been evident in recent years. Investing in culture and projects like this is not measured in the same tangible way as the return on the sale of a credit card. However, when we invest in culture and in projects like this, we go far beyond thinking about immediate returns or financial returns, and rather think about the future that we are making available to talented young people. The fact that we manage to convey an aspirational message and a will to make things happen, is undoubtedly immeasurable. Our budget plans include an allowance for citizenship projects, that is, social actions under the Bank´s Social Responsibility umbrella, where we evaluate the positive impact that these initiatives can bring to the country's future. However, we believe that support can go beyond funding and make various tools available to those in need, thus helping to make things happen. We try to find viable and feasible solutions to help implement initiatives that bring real value to the communities where we operate.

Speaking of Xiquitsi, Xonguila discovered Alexandre, a 12-year-old prodigy who plays cello in the orchestra, and decided to talk to him, to listen to his story and find out what his day-to-day is like over there. Classical music has been circulating in Alexandre's veins since he was 6 years old: the cello is his instrument; one he has played since he was 6 years old and his vehicle for spreading joy. The oldest of three brothers, the boy tried to play the violin, but his true love was revealed to be the cello. It was love at first sight. As we say informally, “a gift is something a person is born with, never acquired!” Alexandre Munguambe, 12 years old, is also like that. Born into a family of artists, the young prodigy was interested in the arts from an early age. “I live in a family of musicians, and with the help of my father, I started to play the violin, but one day I had the opportunity to participate in a cello class and I liked it! Then, I never stopped,” told us the young cellist. We reached out to Alexandre in the context of Children's Day, and during our conversation, he said: “When I play, I have the ambition to want to be better every day, and find

his parents very proud. This young cellist has been a part of the Xiquitsi Project for six years, and his biggest dream is to feel fulfilled with the work he develops. “I dream of being happy with what I do”, revealed Alexandre Munguambe, adding: “At Xiquitsi, I have access to music lessons and a place where I can socialize with different people”. Anyone who thinks that Munguambe entered the project through his father would be wrong. He attended an audition,

When I play, I have the ambition to want to be better every day, and find the strength to not give up and continue to play music

the strength to not give up and continue to play music”. He tries to reconcile school with the art of playing, since it´s only in this way that he will be able to have a brighter future. As a result of this fusion, art and school, Alexandre is an exemplary student and one of the most awarded at his school. Every year, he has been one of the great references, due to its good school performance, good behaviour, and dedication in classes. Since starting classes and to this day, he never failed to pass the year, a fact that makes

and passed. He has already taken part in several artistic productions carried out by Xiquitsi across the country, and has been to neighboring South Africa twice, specifically to Cape Town. During one of the Cape Town trips, at the Stellenbosch concert in 2019, he performed and felt more accomplished afterwards. It was there that he became certain of the path to follow. Alexandre has always had the unconditional support of his parents. “One day, I would like to share the stage with Professor Peter Martins, who resides in South Africa, and Manuel Matsinhe, from Mozambique”, confided Alexandre.

Xiquitsi is a project of the Kulungwana Association. In addition to the musical component, orchestra and classical music choir, it aims to promote social insertion, as well as professional training through collective music education. The Xiquitsi Orchestra is the first classical orchestra in Mozambique. As for the cello, it belongs to the family of string instruments. The term “cello” was first introduced in the Portuguese language in the 20th century. Until then, the instrument was known as “rabecão”, a name that is still used in some places today.

JUNE 25, 1975

The most significant date in the history of an independent Mozambique “Mozambican men and women, workers, peasants, fighters, all Mozambican people, in your name, at zero hundred hours today, June 25, 1975, the Frelimo Central Committee solemnly proclaims the complete and utter independence of Mozambique and its institution as the Peoples Republic of Mozambique.” It was with these words that, 47 years ago, Samora Machel announced to the world the great victory of the Mozambican people against colonial domination, the culmination of a centuries-old resistance process and an armed struggle for liberation that lasted a decade. Mozambique thus conquered independence, the freedom to govern itself, the power to make all the necessary decisions throughout the national territory to defend the interests of its people. Symbols of this independence are the flag, the emblem and national anthem, as well as the Constitution of what is, in contemporary designation, the Republic of Mozambique. Over the past decades, there have been several activities to celebrate this date, such as rallies, parades, shows, the decoration of streets and buildings, and many others, among which we recall a series of stamps published in 1978 by the Mozambican Postal Service.

In 1978, Correios de Moçambique marked the date by issuing this beautiful stamps with the symbols of the nation

rua conheceu meio mundo. THE NEXT... O PRÓXIMO, NÃO O ÚLTIMO PASSO ``Chico António e os The Next´´ é o projecto musical no qual trabalha o artista actualmente.

Seguem-se os principais nomes do projecto: Chico António (Vocalista, guitarra e flauta), Kurt Toncar (baixo), Bernd BB Kong Bogensberger (Bateria), Roland Pickl Mudungaze (Guitarra), Pierre Dufloo (Saxofone), Mahu Mucamisa (Saxofone tenor), Mario Avasani (Trompete), Nobina Morimoto (Violino), Pietro Barone (Guitarra), Mark Mulholland (Guitarra) e Nico M'Sagarra (percussão).

Enquanto houver saúde, vou continuar a fazer música, a minha vida.

He went from life on the streets of the Mozambican capital (then Lourenço Marques) in the mid-1960s, to the prison cells of the Portuguese colonial regime, before attending the boarding school where he became a man and a musician who, through his art, would come to know half the world. This is how one can describe the unmistakable Chico António who, before all that, was a cattle herder. He is 64 years old, more than half of which were dedicated to music.

I

t sounds like fiction, but it's not. These are dramatic chapters of the real-life story of the Mozambican musician Chico António, who spoke to Xonguila about his renowned artistic career, as well as the next musical project on the pipeline, with the Austrian band The Next. Chico António's life begins with a triggering incident, just like in the movies. At the age of six, the boy was a cattle herder who decided to run away from home, with no specific destination in mind, for fear of facing his father, because he had lost half of the herd (20 sheep and goats) for which he was responsible. This traumatic event in the life of this composer and performer from Magude, in Maputo province, and author of popular songs in the 80s and 90s, dates back to 1964. Chico lived on the streets for two years, before being apprehended and held in detention cells by the colonial police. In that same year, he was taken to an orphanage in Chiango, and later given up for adoption due to his rebellious behaviour. His adoptive parents, a Portuguese couple, sent him to a religious boarding school, Missão São José de Lhanguene (a catholic mission), where he completed his primary and secondary school education. He graduated in Chemistry at the Escola Industrial de Maputo (“Maputo Industrial School”). At the same time, he was learning the art from which he lives today: music. He attended trumpet lessons, learnt how to read a musical score and solfeggio. At the age of nine, he was already a choir boy in a 70-person choir at Missão São José, where he became a man and an artist. In 1978, he joined the band ABC 78, at the invitation of fellow musician Costa Neto.

Chico António grew up in an artistic atmosphere, surrounded by the best artists in the country. He went from group to group, always as a trumpeter, until joining Grupo RM, in 1983, which included the great references of Mozambican música ligeira (pop music), such as Wazimbo, Sox, José Guimarães, Mingas, Alípio Cruz, Zeca Tcheco, Alexandre Langa, Zevo, among others. The group was created to support national musicians of recognized value and produce material for Mozambican music broadcasts on Rádio Moçambique. In 1992, Chico decided to pursue a solo career. THE CONNECTION WITH THE ROOTS True to himself! The authenticity of Chico António is not only in the distinct appearance of his silver hair or in his simplicity. It is rather, precisely in what he does best: music, strongly influenced by the Mozambican social and cultural realities. "I always try to explore traditional national rhythms, something this country has a wealth of, to be authentic in my compositions. I'm not a big fan of computer-generated music or digitalized instruments, because they lack feeling, which only a musician can impart", justified the composer and performer, who created hits such as "Mercandonga", "Negra macua", Cachangage" and "Hantlissa Maria". “There is a vast array of national rhythms and it´s practically impossible to merge them all. But I try to explore, whenever possible, a little of everything that exists in the [different] regions across the country. However, my vibe is mapiko, ngalanga, nganda, tufo and chigubo”, clarified the artist.

In 1990, Chico won the grand prize in the Descobertas (“Discoveries”), a contest from Radio France International (RFI), with the song "Baila Maria", performed in a duet with Mingas, when he was still part of the RM Group. "The RM Group was a real academy. There were ten years of intense learning. I was fortunate to work surrounded by some of this country´s greatest musicians. This was crucial for my artistic growth. I lived, in the Group, the best years of my career," he said. "Baila Maria" stood out from the other three thousand competing songs, evaluated by a jury. As a result of the award, Chico went to the French capital (Paris) to study music, and specialized in base piano techniques, musical arrangements, composition, and musical recording. "During my training in Paris, my tutor Manu Dibango advised me to finish my studies and return to Mozambique, to research traditional rhythms and encourage other national artists to stick to their roots. This helped me build my artistic “tone”, which was gradually consolidated by the experiences I drew from respected artists from the continent and beyond", he argued.

In France, he spent time with and shared the stage at music festivals with personalities such as Miriam Makeba, Salif Keita, Hugh Masekela, Youssou N'Dour, Peter Gabriel, Mori Kanté, Pierre Bianchi, among others. In 1991, Chico António recorded his first solo album and later a second, titled Memórias (“Memories”), released in 2014. The first one, Cineta (from 1991) was recorded in Paris with the RM Group, as part of the RFI´s Descobertas (“Discoveries”) competition prize which, in addition to the scholarship, included the recording of an album. With his music, the ex-street boy got to know half the world. Russia, Yugoslavia, GDR, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Holland, Italy, England, France, Finland, Norway and Sweden are some of the European and Western countries where he took Mozambican culture to the stage. In Africa, he has travelled to Angola, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Cape Verde and Mali, among other countries. THE NEXT... THE NEXT, NOT THE LAST STEP The artist is currently working on the “Chico António e os The Next” (“Chico António and The Next”) musical project. This joint project by the musician and the Austrian musical group began two years ago and is being carried out in the province of Inhambane, at the Studio Bom Dia (a recording studio), under the direction and co-production of Roland Pickl, an Austrian national based in Mozambique who is also a member of the band. The main artists of the project are: Chico António (Vocalist, Guitar and Flute), Kurt Toncar (Bass), Bernd BB Kong Bogensberger (Drums), Roland Pickl Mudungaze (Guitar), Pierre Dufloo (Saxophone), Mahu Mucamisa (Saxophone tenor), Mario Avasani (Trumpet), Nobina Morimoto (Violin), Pietro Barone (Guitar), Mark Mulholland (Guitar) and Nico M'Sagarra (Percussion). The idea behind “Chico e os The Next” is to bring together different styles of music and experiences from different national and foreign artists, to produce a double album of unreleased songs by Chico and the band", explains the CEO of Studio Bom Dia, in the province of Inhambane, and producer responsible for the

project, which started in 2020. During the confinement due to Covid-19, Chico recorded 20 unreleased songs (with some recreations) with the participation of local artists and foreign musicians with whom he maintains contact and professional relationships. In terms of genre, one can find his mark, but there are also influences from the band. "Chico's compositions are a fusion of various rhythms. They have elements of African music, with mbira, flute, kora (an instrument from Mali), timbila from Mozambique. Other elements are violin, guitars, blues, jazz, saturated guitars, rock guitars, which are also a passion of Chico´s and mine´s", said Roland, the executive producer responsible for the project, which has no release date as of yet. "Haste is the enemy of perfection. This is a project that involves many musicians, and that takes a lot of time in the studio. Besides, recording live music is expensive. There are many professionals involved, each with their own specialty," said Chico. " No songs from the project were published because we need more time to prepare the latest mixes. That takes three to four weeks. At the moment, we are looking for partnerships to finance our recording work", said Roland, and then praised Chico, a professional colleague and long-time friend. "Working with Chico is always a great pleasure. He is a humble person, an exemplary professional and a very well-structured composer. He works very well in the studio, has an interesting vision and, on stage, it's impressive the way he improvises. He makes it look easy", thus acknowledged Roland – the first of the band to see him perform – Chico´s enormous talent. In the meantime, while the songs await editing, Chico and the band The Next were in concert at the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Centre (in Maputo) at the end of May, presenting a synthesis of the project to fans, which will eventually culminate with the double album of 20 songs performed by Chico António. The band The Next was founded in 1998 and, in that same year, they released their first album, titled Unreal, which can be heard on digital platforms such as Spotify, Amazon and Beatcamp, or through the website www. studiobomdia.com. In 2004, the band experienced an interregnum, the members separated and went to live in other states. However, they kept in contact and dedicated to the music, according to the producer based in Mozambique. The band got back together and made new music in 2009, in Mozambique. In 2021, they released their second album, Antagônica (“Antagonistic”), which they intend to promote through their collaborative work with Chico António, who will also edit his second album after Memórias (released in 2014). "This project with the band The Next will definitely not be the last project of my artistic career. As long as I'm healthy, I'll continue to make music, which is my life. I'm an artist who enjoys projects and is always open to new collaborations", said the musician, who is also part of the Trânsito group, with Chude Mondlane, Edmundo and Nico Sandala.

“Mozambique is a country with numerous challenges in the health sector. It is a huge country, with 30 million inhabitants, where access to primary care and specialized health care is not always easy. It was in thinking about this reality, as well as on the lack of [qualified] human resources, that we developed this idea. Albeit remotely, we can help many Mozambicans. Depending on the type of pathologies, it is possible to formulate diagnoses and monitor patients remotely, namely through telemedicine consultations (online). Dr. Moz is a ground-breaking innovative tool in Mozambique, which will give Mozambicans the opportunity to access quality health services and the information they need to safely choose an excellent professional. With the advantage that, through new technologies, we can reach the entire country. Dr. Moz is a digital platform that aims to assist any user in the search for services in the health and wellness sectors. It offers the following services: • Search engine: This tool allows the user to search according to their needs. • Digital appointment scheduling system: The user can make an appointment with just one click, in a very quick and practical way. The available times are presented in “slots”, with the added benefit that appointments can be made from anywhere, at any time. • Blood donor database: Dr. Moz has a database of blood donors, who can be notified at any time should the need arise. • Telemedicine: It is the first platform that guarantees a telemedicine service in Mozambique, in which the patient can have any medical specialist consultation, from anywhere in the country, just by having access to the internet. • Subscription packages: Offers access to different telemedicine consultation packages, at very affordable prices, as well as discounts at pharmacies and clinical exams in reference clinics and laboratories. Our objective is to try to make this product available to as many people as possible, expanding the concept to the whole country. We know it's a challenge, and we're here to overcome any challenges that arise and to adapt to different realities. As a virtual medical appointment tool, this application allows the patient to

access health services without leaving their home. And this alone is a very significant asset in a country like ours. We want to support this process so that everyone can have easy access to health services. In order to guarantee this, the application is currently available in an absolutely free version. Several public health problems such as malaria and other infectious diseases, which make mobility difficult, can be solved at any time. We also have the very recent example of the Covid-19 pandemic. Patients can have a remote consultation, avoiding further contagion and spreading the virus. Dr. Moz operates in the health and wellness sectors and, due to the inherent limitations of the digital tool – such as not being able to perform surgical interventions – it will provide general medicine services for more common ailments, and some preparatory work ahead of surgical interventions, to avoid the worsening a patient's clinical condition. There are certain kinds of medical consultations that cannot be done via telemedicine, and these are automatically excluded from the platform. But as for general medicine, we expect to have a high success rate. Given the poor digital literacy in Mozambique, we intend to deploy and have in circulation, fully equipped mobile digital kiosks through which anyone can interact with their doctor. At these posts, there will be a trained technician to assist users with the platform, and even to translate local languages into Portuguese. And as for medical appointments for deaf patients who use Mozambican sign language, doctors will undergo specific training in order to be able to communicate with them. We are extremely pleased with the interest shown by both users and service providers. The feedback received thus far couldn´t be better; it drives us to want to improve this product even more. The number of users is growing with each passing day. We also noticed a great interest in our product on the part of insurance companies. Several entities are reaching out to us to be part of Dr. Moz, and this interest is very gratifying. We intend to set up mobile digital kiosks in various parts of the country where access to health services is scarce. We know that a large part of the population still does not have access to the internet, so, to reach this group of people, we have mobile units staffed with technicians who will assist users during telemedicine appointments. IMPRORISO O que nos diz a equipa do Improriso

Fotografia: Cortesia de Improriso

O

a nossa paixão.

W

e started out as kind of a joke, a bit like everything else has been in these past 14 years. We have always been great fans of standup comedy and, one day, while watching a Kevin Hart show, we realized that there were no [comedy] creators in Mozambique, that there was a gap in the market, and that it could be a great opportunity to start something new. We created a simple flyer that invited the public to participate in a casting call, and we personally handled the distribution in universities and small groups of young people. The casting went, let us say, spectacularly bad. Not many participants came, and those who came didn’t manage to convince us. Near the end, two young people showed up – quite late – and we felt they both had that spark and passion for comedy, and so we decided to invest in them. In the absence of stand-up comedy creators, we had to train those who already had a bit of talent, something they had previously acquired through years of theatre experience in a local group. This is how our journey began, which will be 14 years old in November this year. The beginning was weak, because there was a lot we didn’t know about; we had to take it upon us to educate the public, mixing sketches (short plays) during our show. A lot has changed since then.

We are proud of what we have achieved, and nowadays we can say that stand up in Mozambique is on the right path. Making people laugh is a mission we take very seriously. There's a lot of teamwork behind every stage appearance. We like to believe our secret comes down to two main aspects: the first is that we always try to have work that is the result of group work. Each of us has our own peculiarities and strengths, and we complement each other's work. The second and very important aspect is our consistency. Despite adversity, we strive to be consistently comical in all our interactions, be they face-to-face or online. We like to say that we bring up everyday issues for Mozambicans in a light and relaxed way, always with a [good] dose of humour. They range from those complicated love relationships, the school years, our childhood, even the best (or worst) years of university. Contrary to what many people think, there is always a lot of research that goes with making humour. It is important to be constantly aware of what is happening in the country and in the world at large, and to be able to adapt these events to comedy. We believe that the closer the themes are to our audience, the better they will reflect on these jokes, making them laugh a lot more. Our country is very vast, with very different peoples, but

60 | Revista Xonguila © Ed. 48 • Junho/June 2022

something we all have in common is the ability to laugh, even in adverse situations. That's what we were inspired by to extract our themes: the auntie who prepared the salad at the funeral, our school adventures, the relationship between couples, our jobs, and so on. Fortunately, we´re not short on material. What sometimes makes it difficult for us is the perception of the listener. Today, people are more sensitive and take things literally, and they forget the funny side of the topics we cover. If we make gay jokes, we are being homophobic; if we make jokes about women, we are being sexist, etc. That's why, during our performances, we try to ensure that our audience perceives the joke as just that... a joke. It doesn’t necessarily reflect the opinion or viewpoint of the comedian. Nowadays, we already have great creators in this artistic modality in the country, inside and outside the group. Names like Txopito, Borges Makwakwa, Menezes, Rico Biosse, Maira Santos, Mário Mabjaia, already are reference figures on the national scene, who either started out on our stages, or work with us with some frequency. At an international level, we are inspired by Gilmário Vemba, Fernando Rocha, Herman José, Os Quatro Amigos, Fábio Porchat, Rodrigo Marques, in the Lusophone world. As for English performers,

we look up to Kevin Hart, Chris Rock, Trevor Noah. We have already had the pleasure of sharing the stage with some of these references, in Mozambique, Portugal and Angola. The pandemic impacted the whole world, and it was no different with us. The curfews and appeals for people to stay at home affected us tremendously. The virtual world emerged as a viable alternative, but truth be told, it is in the interpersonal contact that the je ne sais quoi of making art resides, that is where we feel good and want to be at. It's been 2 years without us being able to physically perform on a stage in front of a live audience and share good times and laughter. We couldn't wait to get back on a stage; that´s our passion. We think that, nowadays, one cannot talk about art without social media and the digital world. The world is increasingly becoming a global village, and, on one hand, we are bombarded with art (from good to bad) on a daily basis. On the other hand, we can [use it to] make our art reach further. Since our inception, the online universe has always been vital to our work. It is through social media that we are able to interact with our audience and bring them to the theatre halls. On the other hand, it is generally through social media that we follow new trends in stand-up and humour around the world, which enables us to constantly learn new things and improve the quality of our productions. In a tremendously globalized world, where access to our work is just a click away, we

think that we should look at culture as a calling card from Mozambique to the world. And it is important to understand that, by making comedy, and sharing it with the world, we are sharing what makes us unique and affirming our way of being, our Mozambicanicity. As we approach our 14th anniversary, we would like to be more present in the lives and dayto-day of Mozambicans. This year, we managed to fulfil one of our dreams: to be on television. In the near future, we hope to be able to perform shows in all provinces of the country. However, our work needs more support, both from the public and from brands that invest in events. As for the future? Radio, more television, podcasts? Anything can happen. The sky is no longer the limit. BEAUTIFUL STORIES LIVED BY IMPRORISO An emotional story occurred when one of our comedians had a fire in his house, leaving him and his family with practically nothing. We immediately requested support from our friends and followers, and held a benefit show, where people brought goods and clothes. The show was a success, and we were able to help our artist get back on his feet and start over. We once produced a show dedicated to love and, a few hours earlier, we were contacted by a young man who wanted to propose to his girlfriend on stage. It was a special moment for them, and for us too. We met the couple again not long ago. They are happily married.

MMEC 2022

64 | Revista Xonguila © Ed. 48 • Junho/June 2022

central governments. The meeting took place at a key stage for several projects that are due to be scaled up, with investment and project opportunities expected to grow rapidly. Over two days, the MMEC provided a unique and valuable moment for the presentation of ongoing projects and strategic plans for the region, as well as promoting networking between participants. It provided insights into existing opportunities in the natural resources sector, thus allowing for new partnerships to form and strengthen existing ones. Both first-time participants and seasoned professionals were able to take advantage of the occasion. Two new digital tools were launched at the event, seeking to facilitate access to information and in-

crease opportunities for national business people to actively participate in the oil and gas industry. The platforms were developed by ENH (Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos) and namely are, the ENH Map View and the Portal de Fornecedores (“Suppliers Portal”). ENH Map View is a portal for consulting geological and geophysical data in research and production plots, as well as data on the distribution and consumption of hydrocarbons in Mozambique. In turn, the Portal de Fornecedores (“Suppliers Portal”) is a platform that allows the online registration of service providers and suppliers, with emphasis on national SMEs, for the provision of services to ENH and, ultimately, to the industry. The creation of these two platforms marks the company's ongoing commitment to enhancing transparency, as well as contributing to the growth of local content.

"O modo como continuo a crescer e a desenvolver-me 80 | Revista Xonguila © Ed. 48 • Junho/June 2022

A

LARA GONZALEZ FORTES, IN NEW YORK Written by:

Eliana Silva

If latitudes were synonymous with wealth, Lara would have a fortune: a true citizen of the world with a wealth of life experiences. Today, it is directly from New York, the city that never sleeps, that this Mozambican tells us what it's like to be a Legal Negotiations Specialist at Bloomberg.

L

ara's first memory of living outside the Pearl of the Indian Ocean [Mozambique] is an aerial view of the British capital and thousands of London´s evening lights when she landed in Her Majesty's country 24 years ago. She would reside there for about a year and a half. From London, she went to Madrid and from there to Leeds, in the north of England, where she lived until crossing the Atlantic to the American continent, where she has been for 13 years now.

Fotografia: Cortesia de Lara Gonzalez

Through a few words exchanged by electronic mail and on social networks, one can discern Lara's serenity, likely a counterpoint to her work environment, which is very fast paced. Working at one of the world's most prestigious financial news company means spending your day responding to customer queries and negotiating licensing agreements across a wide range of financial solutions products and services. For those on the outside looking in, this is a very demanding sector. In Lara's eyes, her job is extremely rewarding and collaborative. “It is exciting to solve difficult problems as a part of a large team of talented and hardworking professionals. Additionally, one of my favourite things about my work is that my company and department encourage and support their employees in volunteering in as many philanthropic and pro bono opportunities as possible. This brings a lot of balance to the profession”, shares Gonzalez. This balance has allowed her to grow professionally, too: “The way that I continue to grow and develop in my role is by working closely with my colleagues and learning from them, while tak-

ing ownership over my responsibilities. I also stay abreast of business sales and product strategies and work with other departments in the company to streamline processes. My company also offers countless courses and invaluable training to support our professional growth, which I appreciate and enjoy participating in”. Amidst numbers and the energy of living in the Big Apple (as New York City is known), to what extent does Lara feel the glow of her Mozambican pearl? “I have a small community of Mozambicans in the US who are like family. They are very important to me because I feel closer to home [through them]. We spend many holidays together, eat well (groundnut curry, samosas, cod, even a malambe dessert) and dance. We always have to dance a little. In the last Christmas we spent together, we invented a new expression: “The Mozambican goodbye”. It comes from the “Irish goodbye” saying, which is interpreted as “leaving a party without saying goodbye”, but the “Mozambican goodbye” means saying goodbye, putting your coat on (it's very cold here), and then dancing at least three songs before leaving. There is nothing more gratifying than being in Mozambique and visiting my family and friends, but having this community here helps to mitigate the nostalgia and maintain my relationship with my country, which I admire so much” tells us Lara. In reality, the idea of returning to her homeland is always present. So much so that Lara Gonzalez says it would be a great opportunity to expand her knowledge in the field of contract negotiation on the African continent.

M

aputo hosted the 12th edition of the International Fado Festival on June 17-18th, with the live participation of two renowned Portuguese artists, Katia Guerreiro and Hélder Moutinho. Katia Guerreiro performed at the emblematic Cine-Scala, in the heart of Maputo city, and Hélder Moutinho was at the Escola Portuguesa de Moçambique (“Portuguese School of Mozambique”). Under the motto “O Fado e o Mar” (“Fado and the Sea”), and as part of the commemorations of Portugal Day, this year the festival took place in seventeen cities on four continents – Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia. Katia Guerreiro is, today, an accomplished performer and recognized as a notable ambassador of Portuguese music. Her first album, "Fado Maior", released in June 2001, reached Silver Record status and was nominated for the José Afonso Prize in 2002. In 2010, the year in which she celebrated 10 years of career, she was awarded the important Best Fado Singer Award by the Amália Rodrigues Foundation. Among other distinctions, the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic awarded her with the Commendation of the Order of Infante D.

Henrique, for her invaluable contribution to the dissemination of Portuguese culture and for projecting Portugal to the world. She brought a very special concert to Maputo. The connection that Hélder Moutinho (fado singer, composer and lyricist) has with the city of Lisbon is perhaps inevitable: it is a city straddled by the sea and the Tagus River; a city of passions, of fado houses, of nostalgic and poetic nights that inspire him. Well known for the fado gatherings and fado nights in the Portuguese capital, he has also taken his fado across borders. Over the years, he has performed in different parts of the world, namely the United States, Canada, Holland, United Kingdom, China, South Korea, Poland, Finland, Russia and Spain. In Maputo, he sang about love and hate, joy and sadness, “saudade” (an irredeemable nostalgia), the sea and Lisbon, his city. We remind you that Mozambique hosted the International Fado Festival in 2020 in a hybrid format [due to Covid-19 restrictions] , with performers Fábia Rebordão, Cuca Roseta and Sara Correia.

Study abroad and exchange programs tourism as a form of personal development Written by:

Neyde Cuna

H

uman beings have always felt the need to travel, adapt and vary environments. This was originally driven by survival needs such as looking for food and security. Over time, it evolved into tourism for leisure, health and religious reasons, among many others. According to literary sources, the word tourism first appeared in the context of the Grand Tour (17th-19th century), the name given to the famous trips abroad made by young Europeans of the noble class for social and leisure motives, and to complete their education, gaining personal experience and broad general knowledge along the way. The world has since changed a lot and continues to do so. Whether due to factors such as the industrial revolution, technological advances, or any number of future great reasons that tomorrow holds, the fact is that travel has become easier and more accessible. Today, the Grand Tour can be done by citizens of different social classes, and at different stages of life. With a modicum of organization, any individual can have this privilege and live this unique experience, either self-funded or through researching the various existing programs that finance this type of endeavour. It is

much more than wandering around a different country; it's a trip with a purpose, it's taking a deep dive into a new culture, spending more time in the destination, doing what the natives of that country do on a daily basis. Much more than just seeing, it is observing with a critical eye and, at the same time, attending a study program to expand one´s knowledge, a professional internship, or volunteer work. It is one of the most fruitful experiences that a human being can have. This is the study abroad and exchange programs tourism, with a maximum duration of 1 year, as per the definition of tourism. This healthy distancing from what and who is familiar to us, from our comfort zone, is a strong catalyst for the personal, professional, social and emotional development of any individual. This form of tourism is a great foundation for self-knowledge in the infinite process of human metamorphosis. In Mozambique, we should invest in this experience at least once in our lifetime. After all, each one of us is the sum total of our lived experiences, and an experience of this kind is bold, positive and enriching. It is an immersive experience that works with all our senses and, in addition, leaves us with a luggage-full of memories that will stay with us for a lifetime!

Today, the Grand Tour can be done by citizens of different social classes, and at different stages of life.

GIN DAY

Matoa – A febre do batuque (“Matoa – The Fever of the Drums”) The book addresses one of the deeper and most obscure realities of the Lower Zambezi, whose life rhythm is barely noticeable to those unfamiliar with the language of drums. The apparent calm that permeates everyday life in the peaceful village of Miguerrine hides the incessant search for a balance between this material life and another spiritual dimension, inhabited by the ancestors. When one least expects it, a spiritual storm can break out, commonly known as Matoa, a febre do batuque (“Matoa, the fever of the drums”). It is not a fever in the common sense of the word, but rather an emotional state that transcends the human condition. It is an unpredictable and incessant collective discomfort. The magic happens when it comes mixed in with a pure and natural love story. All ceases to have a logical explanation. It must all be experienced to be understood.

Os pintores de sonhos (“Painting Dreams”) On a blazingly hot day, in a village befallen by desertification, Musodze unearths a strange object of unknown origin, while digging the ground in search of a cool place to lie down. Soon after, a terrifying storm breaks out, which makes Zua and Mwedzi associate the unearthed object with the calamity that befell the village. Meanwhile, the strange object disappears, making them fear that it will cause further environmental disasters. In the aftermath of one such calamity, the teacher has the students draw, as a way to release their fears. From one of those drawings, an idea emerges of how the village can counter the cycle of disasters it is experiencing. When the children begin implementing this solution, they find the mysterious object again, unearthing it once again. Not without trepidation, this time they decide to open it and find that it contains a message for humanity. Could it be a threat? Could it be a curse? Could it be a plague? Or could it be a warning? There's only one way to find out – by reading the story, of course!

SAKAWA

Grande parte do doc-

SAKAWA Sakawa is a term used in Ghana to denote any type of internet fraud or scam, of the kind we are frequently warned about, and must caution against. In this documentary directed by Ben Asamoah, we are presented with a deep dive into this type of crime, focusing on online scams on dating sites mainly used to steal money from Westerners. Here, the impostors do not operate within sophisticated networks that have offices or call centres. Instead, they operate from market stalls in very poor neighbourhoods. Most scammers are very simple people who do what they do to survive and escape poverty, without justifying the crimes they are committing. The subjects talk about clients from different countries, about everything that is done to attract victims and the tools they use. Much of the documentary covers the onboarding training given to a new member of the

group, who is learning how to deploy the tricks of the trade. When clients become difficult, scammers resort to threats and even traditional healer practices, mixing centuries-old customs and modern technology. Filmed in Ghana and visually appealing, Sakawa was very well received by international critics and won several awards at prestigious festivals. The director of the film made an effort to denounce the existence of these fraudulent networks, speaking on the negative effects of their actions, the dangers of the technology world, and also teaching us how to guard against them. Sakawa is a compelling documentary that offers a fascinating, non-judgmental, and somewhat dark look at the world of Ghanaian internet scammers, which is nevertheless not limited to that country, but also felt in Mozambique and elsewhere.
