as montanhas, o mar e o oceano.

THE FANTASTICAL WORLD OF RUTH BANON

Fotografia: Mariano Silva

“I've always been very creative and have been making charcoal pencil drawings since I was little. It's funny that I initially didn't use colour. I did many things with my hands, such as embroidery, carpentry, among other craft activities. At some point, I went to the art exhibition of a f riend who painted with watercolours, and I was delighted. The very next day, I bought a small basic watercolour kit and started painting. I was 21 years old at the time. During my adolescence, I had preferred music, and even belonged to a band. I hadn't painted since my childhood, but I became more and more interested in this technique and, today, it is the most dominant form of expression in my illustrations. I am an illustrator. I make stand-alone pieces, I illustrate storybooks, I design book covers and posters. I also make other products related to illustration, such as pouches, furniture, bags. At the moment, I have two different modes of working: the watercolour illustration, which is very inspired by nature and my life in Mozambique, and the collage, a fusion made of old photographs, illustration and botany. I love to paint trees, flowers, vegetation in general, landscapes, animals and the Af rican world, nature. For me, it's a poetic journey where I like to create something unusual, unexpected, a poetry of representations. A fantastical universe, for example a boy flying on top of a bird or a f ish on top of a woman's head; I like to mix

the animal world with the human world, to understand the intimate relationship that exists between all living beings. We all come f rom Mother Earth, and that connection interests me immensely. Which ends up coinciding with the moment we are currently experiencing worldwide; it seems that, in a way, we are living a parallel life. Although we live in cities, nature is our greatest connection to life: the forests, the flowers, the mountains, the sea and the ocean. I really enjoy researching, seeing the influences that exist in representations of art all over the world; getting to know [different] peoples through their artistic expression, f rom South America, Af rica and Asia. I end up absorbing some influences f rom those forms [of expression]. I never went to a school to learn how to paint. I discovered it in myself little by little, through a very intimate and personal journey. I studied anthropology in Spain, but my soul goes much further. I admire many illustrators f rom all over the world – French, Spanish, many people. I learnt f rom observing other illustrators, and drinking f rom those sources, as well as f rom comic books – that was my school. There is a lot of talent in Mozambique, but there are 3 people I particularly admire, namely: Luís Cardoso, Samuel D jive and Celestino Mugumela, whose art is one of the most original I've ever seen.

Art from here

It all starts with a doodle or sketch on paper, of what I want to draw. With a few basic ideas in mind, I start painting. I don't do much preparatory work. It's just me, the brushes and the paper. I usually work with music and I'm very focused. I never know what the end result will be; when I find an idea, I get carried away. The magic of watercolour is that you can't always control the technique precisely: you can more or less do what you want, and yet surprises can occur. I take advantage of these same surprises to make the design evolve in a certain direction, and it's interesting that sometimes they turn out better than I expected. I don't usually interrupt a job or give up because I'm not able to achieve the desired result. I start and end on the same paper. It´s a journey I surrender to, and I am satisfied with the spontaneity of each moment. Regarding other forms of artistic expression, I really like music. I love playing thae tambourine and singing. I have a brand called Saraba, and in my old gallery, Machamba Criativa, I had a lot of items created by me, such as dolls for children, fabric or leather jewellery, pouches, furniture, among other things. I love creating objects that are related to illustration. Today's world is marked by technology, a tool that can be used to create and open up new spaces for creation. I haven't mastered much yet, but I've learnt a few things, as most of my work is done by hand, and yet it also has a digital component in the collage. There are many things to do. I want to investigate, but I don't intend to stop doing things by hand because that imprints my character and my personality. I paint almost everything with brushes and pencils.

Fotografia: Mariano Silva

My plans for the future are to continue to create and learn, learn, learn… I also intend to grow in my profession. I feel privileged because I love what I do, I don't see it as an obligation, it's like I'm playing like a child. I want to explore new techniques, new ways and styles of painting; to travel and be inspired by other places. I want to do exhibitions, launch an illustration book and continue to enjoy myself whilst working, which is life's greatest gift for me. More information on:Instagram/Facebook @sarababyruthbanon

E

Do Director From the Director

A

nd it's February once again, during which we celebrate our national heroes and children go back to school, thus marking the beginning of a new adventure. For many, the year seems to have only just begun. The festivities are over, and what used to be just plans and end-of-year promises, became attitudes and concrete actions that will be decisive in establishing a course of action from here onwards. Let us therefore welcome this month with open arms, sparing no effort for it to bring us much good. For this current edition of Xonguila, the 44th, we talked to Ruth Banon to better understand what motivates her to create her “fabulastic” illustrations and collages. We recount the first steps in the professional career of the talented videographer Ivan Barros, and introduce you to the Apathany platform – which is, let us say, our local Spotify, and yet so much more than that. In the restaurant sector, we spotlight Caracol, one of the new eateries in our capital that promises to be widely talked about. Our columnist Neyde Cuna is back, and this time around she talks to us about the importance of rural tourism to galvanize what has been one of the most hard-hit sectors by the pandemic. A question for you: did you know that the pilão is an important "pillar" in our society? Read about it in this edition, to find out why we say so. And, since reading is essential to gain more knowledge and cultural enrichment, we launched a new column in this edition, in partnership with Alcance Editores, in which we will make monthly reading recommendations with two book listings: one for adults, and another for younger readers, which we hope will please you. As always, other exciting news and articles can be found in our Xonguila, a magazine that, as you know, seeks to show interesting things that are happening among us, as well as the constant natural and human beauty of our Mozambique, as our title suggests. Despite all the difficulties that may exist, remember to take a sunbath to wash your soul, celebrate life and strive to be happy. It is a great pleasure to have you with us. Best wishes for a pleasant read.

Palates on the loose

A new eatery in the capital The recently opened Caracol restaurant is located on Rua da Gorongosa in Maputo city, practically facing the so-called “Miradouro” (lookout point). One of the founding partners, Luís Antunes, explained the concept to us: “Our cuisine is fundamentally Mediterranean, and our menu´s offerings primarily reflect the personal inspirations of our Chefs and [business] partners, combined with the availability of f resh products in the national market. Whenever possible, we use local produce and as f resh as possible, giving particular importance to f ish, seafood and vegetables. Given our presence in the market for some years now, we have suppliers that guarantee us quality products throughout the year. We believe that, in a restaurant, food is undoubtedly very important not only in terms of quality and taste, but also in terms of consistency. Service and a good atmosphere are equally important.

Fotografia: Mariano Silva

In the restaurant sector, it has been diff icult to combat the effect of the pandemic currently plaguing us; however, we have been very successful during this phase. We believe that this is due to the unique atmosphere we offer in our space and the quality of the food. We feel that people like to visit us, to sit at Caracol and be among

f riends and family, even outside mealtimes. Starting in February, we will have live music as well. It is still too early to know if we have reached the level we want, but after these few months of operation, we can conf idently say that, fortunately, we are well above our sales projections. Our success was remarkably fast: by the end of the f irst two days after opening, we had our f irst full house, something that has since happened for at least a couple of days every week. It has been fantastic to see all this and to have satisf ied customers, despite the “stress” that comes with meeting all the orders of a full house. Our plans for the future include opening another restaurant in the city, but for now, we will extend Caracol's opening hours f rom mid-February and start serving breakfast as well. We believe that, given the location, the offer of healthy breakfasts, natural and detox juices will be a success with the f itness af icionados that f requent the Miradouro area.

It has been fantastic to see all this and to have satisf ied customers, despite the “stress” that comes with meeting all the orders of a full house.

Ele comprava-me muitas enciclopédias e várias revistas.

A qualida-

Instagram: @ivanrsbarros

Ivan Barros

Passionate about rock, dance and video storytelling Written by: Jaime

Álvaro

After six years of working in television, Ivan Barros decided to start his own video production company in 2012, to meet a need that was at once professional and personal: using video to tell inspiring stories about Mozambique and what the country has best – its people. Prior to that, this Mozambican videographer had explored other artistic avenues, beginning with music – as a guitarist in a rock band – and then dance, albeit as a mere spectator. Son of António Barros, one of Mozambique's best-known communication professionals, Ivan Barros does not hide the influence his father's legacy has had on him from early on: "My father is a journalist and columnist by profession, with over 35 years of experience. I have lived with this thing called communication since I was a kid". As the old proverb goes, it seems that the apple didn´t fall far from the tree indeed, and is part of his artistic DNA. Ivan added images to the stories his father used to narrate on a radio program at Antena Nacional – Rádio Moçambique (RM), and managed to establish his own voice in communication.

At the age of 12, Ivan was already producing a radio program for his father. He selected the content and songs to be aired. The communication bug grew alongside his exposure to radio and, above all, to books. "I listened to the radio a lot, and my father encouraged me to read a lot. Not only me, but also my brothers. He bought me a lot of encyclopedias and several magazines. I consumed a lot of literature because my house was a real library. We had a never-ending collection of books", he thus recalled his childhood and the good habits that he still cultivates to this day.

Although born under the intense heat of the Tete province, in 1979, Ivan spent his entire childhood in the city of Quelimane, in the Zambézia province, before moving permanently to Maputo to pursue his studies. Therefore, he legitimately considers himself a quintessential Quelimanense (“of or from Quelimane”). Today, at the age of 43, Ivan has a degree in communication, having worked for a few years as a website developer and content creator.

Music and creativity are proven to be perfect ingredients to keep one´s mind focused and productive. For many years, Ivan dedicated most of his time to one thing, whilst being a guitarist in a rock band in his spare time. "The band consisted of me on guitar, my brother on vocals, a cousin on bass, and another friend on drums." It was named Kaspanatola, founded in 2002. They started out playing punk-style music, and then experimented with something heavier, more aggressive and intense. They shortened the name to Kaspa, to rhyme with “mudança” (“change”, in Portuguese). However, the group never wavered from the band´s founding goals, and fun was above all others. Throughout its brief career, this band of young adventurers per-

formed on several stages, including the Machava Stadium, Praça da Independência, the Franco Mozambican Cultural Center (CCFM), among others. Despite the band's success, Ivan always kept his feet on the ground. Reality never let him dream beyond what he could. “Since joining the band, I always regarded it as a side project to my professional occupation because, this being Mozambique, playing rock was always going to be just for the love of it, a hobby. I never had the illusion that that could be my life", he said. He admits, however, to missing the stage and the loud, aggressive sound of his guitar, put aside in 2012. In the same year that the group dissolved, Ivan opened his own video production company, after a stint doing work for television. During their 10 years on the road, the band Kaspa didn´t publish any original album.

THE TELEVISION YEARS

Ivan Barros' career on television is notable for the leadership roles he performed there. But how did a computer scientist and amateur rocker get into television?

Ivan used to organize rock festivals in Maputo, with his own funds and just for the love of it, by his own account. The festivals were intended to promote rock music, a style marginalized by show promoters at the time. "As nobody called us, we had to organize our own shows, with our own means", he said. "João Ribeiro learnt that I organized rock festivals with virtually no budget, but that [nevertheless] things went well. I think he saw in me some ability to do production, something that I didn't even know I had it myself, and invited me to coordinate production at STV (Soico Television) in 2007." After six months on the job, Ivan was appointed Program Director for that private channel. “I realized very quickly that video was what I was truly drawn to. I had to approve some content before it aired, and I started to learn how to make television by watching my colleagues at work.” Some of the notable entertainment programs he led at the time are Fama Show, Fest Coros and Music Box Live. After a year and a half at STV, Ivan was invited to take over as director of programming at Televisão Independente de Moçambique – TIM, a channel that was later closed. "Everything I had learnt at STV, which was an excellent school, I implemented and perfected at TIM for about five years. Through-

out this entire trajectory, I never thought about opening a company because, from my standpoint as an artist, I didn't want to deal with taxes. I always intended to work for someone", he revealed. However, disillusioned with what he had found on television, Ivan gained courage, faced his fears and decided to open his own video production company, with the mission of contributing to the national audiovisual development.

DISILLUSIONMENT, THEN SELF-REALIZATION

Ten years ago, in 2012, Ivan Barros opened a small video production company, Ampola Audiovisual, focusing on corporate videos and stories with a human side. "I stopped believing in national television channels because they stopped being vehicles that told stories about Mozambique and about Mozambicans, and became radio programs with images. Most of the schedule was made up of debates or talk show programs. There was no longer reportage nor video content that told stories of Mozambican daily life. I realized then that it was perhaps time to face my fears and open my own video production company. I was also very influenced by my wife, who gave me a lot of support for me to stop being a salaried employee and start ruling my own professional destiny.” As a videographer, Ivan has traveled to all the prov-

inces in the country to tell success stories of non-governmental organizations, companies, projects and/ or people, which has allowed him to show a little bit of the whole country to all Mozambicans. “I feel like an accomplished professional because, through my lens, I tell [others] of a poor Mozambique, but a Mozambique [made up of] people who nevertheless believe that tomorrow can be better. I think that telling these stories helps show other Mozambicans that we cannot lose hope.” And the Creative Director of Ampola Audiovisual goes on to give some examples: "When we went to collect stories of those who suffered the effects of Cyclone Idai and all those cyclones that followed in the region of Búzi, in Sofala province, we saw people who did not give up, who continued to fight – fighting to give their children a better future. Those are stories that move us, and make us realize that there are more important things in life than certain trivialities we see in the urban environment. I think that makes us more human.” Always enthusiastic, Ivan says he loves Mozambique. He doesn't just travel to fulfill a work schedule, but also to get to know local realities beyond what he goes there to do at the outset. Some projects left a mark, such as a program produced for six years for the Ministry of Agriculture, titled “Moçambique Criando Riqueza” (“Mozambique Generating Wealth”), aired on Televisão de Moçambique (TVM). According to Ivan, it was “a spectacular project, which did not talk about politics, but about agrarian techniques.” It served as a bridge for several producers from different parts of the country to exchange experiences. “Each video I make is like a baby to me. There's something special in all of them, because I try to grow a little more professionally with each of them. All of them force me to do some research, and that makes me a better professional than I was [on the previous one]. And so, they all have a peculiar story.” The quality, professionalism and enthusiasm made Ivan a professional whose services are in great demand in the national market. Among its clients are Banco de Moçambique, WWF, Higest, OXFAM and AGRA, among others.

VIDEO AND DANCE: A FATED MARRIAGE

Ivan Barros found in video – or rather, invented – an opportunity to live and immortalize one of his greatest and oldest passions: contemporary dance. “I don't dance – in fact, I don´t like dancing – but I do love dance. I've indeed been challenged to learn how to dance. But for me, it's not about learning to do it. I don't like to dance, but I love watching others dance." Ivan's relationship with this art began with a meeting with two heavyweights of Mozambican contemporary dance, Edna Jaime and Ídio Chichava. “The dancers contacted my band to produce, live, the soundtrack to accompany a piece they were creating. Twenty years have since passed, and we continue to be great friends to this day.”

Ivan became a specialist in the production and direction of contemporary dance videos and films in Mozambique. His catalog includes “Começa a ficar tarde” (“It´s getting late”), which won the Prémio Novos Autores (New Authors Award) at the Kugoma Short Film Festival 2020, and “Último berro: Corpo em Estado de Emergência” (“The last scream: Body in a State of Emergency”), both starring performances by dancer Ídio Chichava; “Um Segundo” (“A Second”) performed by the dancer Edna Jaime; “Motus Corporis”, with choreographer and dancer Lulu Sala; “In-box”, performed by Pak Ndjamena and screened at the oldest African contemporary dance festival, Jomba, in Durban, South Africa, and at some festivals in Europe. Most of the productions were independent, while others had the material and financial support of the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center (CCFM), in the context of supporting the artistic sector, which was drastically impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. "I call these collaborative projects 'passion projects'; there is no financial return, but for me they work as an escape from the corporate world, where everything is more controlled. So when I'm producing or directing dance videos, I'm free to experiment with techniques, to even be politically incorrect from the point of view of filming rules", he maintained. “In-box” describes the current situation that the world is experiencing and discusses human resilience and the hope that the world and Mozambique – in particular, Cabo Delgado – needs. The film received positive reviews at the festivals where it showed, and was also requested by some professors from South African and UK universities to be used in dance classes. "This shows that, when we do something well, it crosses borders. When we want to do something, we cannot look to money as a primary objective. Success will be a consequence, whether in terms of money or prestige", he added. Also with the dancer and director Pak, Ivan presented via live streaming, a dance show at TANZAHOi - International Dance and Dance Film Festival, in Germany. The artists' performance was recorded in November 2021 at the Fernando Leite Couto Foundation. "When I'm producing the films, I don't think much about the impact they could have, but about the satisfaction that the dancers and I will have with that audiovisual product. Of course that, as professionals, we are always very flattered whenever a film is well received by the public", he explained. The dance videos and films referenced in this article can be accessed on Ivan Barros' YouTube channel. He claims that if he weren't a storyteller, he would want to be a bird or a pilot. "I love to see the birds spread their wings wide open, with all the freedom that a living being can crave", he concluded. Ivan, who is a married father of two children, promises to continue telling stories about the daily lives of Mozambicans, so as to share them with Mozambique and the world.

These characteristics create a perfect scenario for investment, as well as an excellent opportunity to diversify our tourism offerings, by focusing on rural tourism – something that can turn out to be a very important step for the future, for a greater and better recovery. It also promotes participation in traditional festivals such as Gwazamuthini, among many others. to rescue the self-esteem of peasants, to generate jobs, and to improve the quality of life of rural families, for whom rural tourism is an alternative to increasing their income. It is also, and above all, a means to empower the Mozambican woman, who is the main producer of the activities associated with this type of tourism. Which places should we bet and invest on? We have many, and Manhiça is a great example! It is obvious that investments need to be made in terms of basic infrastructure and services, which requires planning by both public authorities and private initiatives, working individually or jointly, with the involvement of the local community or farmers in the development of strategies and technology.

MONUMENT AND INTERPRETATION CENTRE IN MATOLA A Memorial to the victims of the Apartheid regime Dawn was breaking across the city of Matola on Saturday, January 30, 1981, when a brigade of military commandos f rom the South Af rican apartheid regime stealthily entered the streets of the city to perpetrate a heinous attack against fighters f rom the militarized branch of the ANC (the Umkhonto we Sizwe, or MK for short). Despite the courageous response of the MK fighters, the coordinated attack, which took place in three different locations simultaneously, claimed the lives of 13 ANC members, whilst others were taken into captivity. In addition to these, an innocent bystander and 3 commandos on the attackers side also lost their lives. All in all, 17 people perished in the painstakingly planned attack by apartheid forces. These were aimed at thwarting efforts to establish equal rights among different races in the neighbouring country of Mozambique. The fateful episode that claimed the lives of these men has been immortalized forever in the Monument and Interpretation Centre of Matola, whose inaugural opening was in 2015. Located in the heart of the city´s Praça da

Juventude, it is primarily comprised of three columns representing each of the attack´s locations, with the indication of each one of the victims’ names. On the edge of the central square, there are also pillars with the names of the Southern African nations that suffered colonialist repression and racial segregation and fought for their self-determination. The Interpretation Centre stands out f rom the surrounding environment for its modern architecture, and its interior space was designed so that those who visit it can immerse themselves in the history of the struggle against apartheid and colonialism. Together, the Monument and the Interpretation Centre are a Memorial that aims to preserve a remarkable piece of Southern Africa's history, as well as to praise the effort undertaken by Mozambicans in the fight against the apartheid regime. The mission of this space which is undoubtedly worth visiting, is to document and disseminate this knowledge so that history is not lost to time and, above all, so that the apartheid regime is not repeated.

Hoje, amo fotografar, e a fotografia é a minha essência. Tenho tido a oportunidade

Shanna Chicalia in her own words

“My journey began when I was willingly photographed as a child and… it clicked! Born out of that, was the desire to photograph, to imitate other photographers – initially because I liked having a camera in my hand (just for style), then by discovering the result of a mere style. Today, I love the act of taking pictures, and photography is my essence. For me, photography is a long-lasting record of every moment that life gives us. When it comes to photographing everything around me, I get inspired. A detail, a staged set, the colors, the environment, the people, the place, the fashion, the arts…they all fascinate me a lot. Ideas come from all these things; the best ideas are a complement to this result. In my humble opinion, the really exciting stories are, by and large, those that refer to overcoming the odds. The life of someone who suffers from albinism, for example, moves me immensely. I have had the opportunity to be close to people with this condition, and it moves me. And each face tells a story in the eyes of the world; it speaks for itself. I think the biggest challenges these days

consist of being up to date with new technologies, [such as] flying drones or being up to date with cutting-edge photography techniques. The current generation of photographers is very proactive. They make me throw my hands up – and I say: I don't know if I can do this! But then I manage to. I believe that the essential ingredients for a prosperous future in the photography market are quality and efficiency. I try to present a pleasant reference to the eyes of those who see my work, a unique experience. In addition to photography, the art of painting, creating and recreating captivates me immensely. To stay up to date with my work, follow me on Instagram (shannachicalia & galleria.rooco), or visit my “gallery”, my home.”

Aayat Irfan The proper essence of traveling can’t only be felt in the final destination and all its attractions but also the other little things that contribute to your journey and stay. The bumpy roads and the long rides. The music on your iPod while you watch the clouds drift away from your airplane window. The fresh fragrance of a new city. The softness of the crisp white hotel beds and the pleasure you feel to have the hotel breakfast. The excitement of wearing new outfits. The satisfactory sound of the shutter clicking of your camera. These are all valuable and little moments of joy that are felt through taking trips to new places. Traveling is an entire package of emotions, knowledge and experiences. It holds with it the most precious memories and the most thrilling stories of our lives. Traveling isn’t a modern trend, it is something that started way back in time. Not to forget that these are some of the most renowned explorers of early modern period – Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus and Vasco Da Gama. Traveling has been an essential part of humans’ lives since the olden times, though the reasons behind it may vary. You may be a business traveler or a back-packer. You may be a wayfarer or a solivagant. You may travel to take a temporary halt from your routine-controlled life or to quench your thirst of wanderlust. You might just not travel at all because you hate getting jet-lagged or you don’t think it’s just worth your expenses. Whatever the reasons may be, traveling is the refresh button of your life and you need to keep pressing that button every now and then as per your own budget. Are you a fan of adventure?

Apathany Contributing to the self-financing of musicians Written by:

Jaime Álvaro Created for all artists, Apathany is a Mozambican startup founded in mid-2020 with the aim of revolutionizing the national cultural and entertainment industries in the medium and long term, with music as starting point. The initiative is by Zulficar Buraimo, a 44-year-old entrepreneur, and resulted in the first digital platform in the country that allows artists to monetize their music through views, downloads and fan likes. Apathany's online music platform took just one year (2020-2021) to start attracting hundreds of followers, including early-career artists and others looking to consolidate their brand in a market that is as competitive as it is unstructured. The project was born amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, whose negative impact, particularly in the arts sector, is immeasurable. It aims to promote Mozambican artists through live shows, interviews, documentaries and podcasts. The monetization of songs through views, downloads, likes and number of followers has been an added attraction for artists to join the platform – the only one in the country offering a paid streaming service. A stream is the real-time transmission of audio and video data from a server to a device – such as a computer, cellphone or smart TV. Streaming has forever changed the way music is consumed. Whereas before, it was necessary to download content or rent it at the video store, buy a CD, a VHS cassette, a DVD or a BluRay, or even wait for it to be on TV or radio –

with streaming, it is possible to access a huge range of movies, series, videos, music, among others, in real time, and from anywhere – as long as there is an internet connection. The most popular music streaming service worldwide is currently Spotify.

CREATED TO CONNECT MOZAMBIQUE

The essence of Apathany, according to its creator, is to connect Mozambique through the arts, and to help artists expand their work and ultimately finance themselves. "There is a lot of quality music on the market, but it is not being capitalized on, [and] we want to change that. We want to elevate our Mozambicanity, to be all we really can be and yet aren´t because we simply don't have those connected synergies in the country", pointed out Zulficar Buraimo. "An artist came to see me, a music student at the time. He introduced me to his work, which had an exceptional quality, and yet was struggling to succeed in the market. No one was opening doors for him", said the businessman, who thus sponsored

the first video clip of this young, underrated artist and later, in 2019, took on the role of his manager. "Then, I thought: why not help other artists besides Bakhil, why not help structure the market, create a cultural gravitational field where every artist finds a space or a way to expand their work and finance themselves?". The answer was Apathany, created in 2020. Zulficar invested approximately 10 thousand US Dollars (about 650 000 Meticais at the current exchange rate) to implement the ambitious project, which goes far beyond music. As he tells us, “Many people know Apathany, but the platform is integrated into a larger platform (Ihapari – “novelty”, in the Macua language), which integrates several services and whose purpose is to connect the arts and culture makers in Mozambique", explained. "Many artists are already familiar with the platform and talk about the platform, but we recognize that more needs to be done to improve the public´s awareness [of the platform]. So the speed at which it grew in one year encourages us to move forward even more. We are on the right path", he happily stated.

A NEW ERA IN MOZAMBICAN MUSIC

In the age of streaming, selling music over the internet continues to have advantages. But, as is well known, it is not a simple task for an independent artist to sell their music in major online stores, such as Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon or Google Play; to do so, it is necessary to be connected to a digital aggregator. Apathany does not have the bureaucracy that characterizes large digital stores. The platform allows independent artists to promote and trade songs with reasonable profits. When aided by a good marketing strategy on the artist's personal website and social networks, direct sales are a way to finance artists. "The main objective of creating the platform is to serve the culture-making agent, providing him with a space where he can monetize his work in order to finance himself", he clarified. For a market such as Mozambique, where the value chain of cultural industries is fragmented, there

is no connection between production, editing and distribution to the final consumer. Apathany, according to its creator, is an opportunity for artists to build their own market. "We motivate artists to strive for their professional goals and instill in them [the notion] that their success depends on the number of people they can reach and influence. Here [on the platform], artists develop mechanisms and methods to influence their audience and, consequently, the market. From an early stage, it is important for the artist to know that his work depends on that", he warned. Monetization on the platform happens through followers, number of clicks and music downloads. Amounts vary between 2.5 Meticais (if you are an artist follower) to 5.0 Meticais (if you are a fan follower). While this is attractive to artists, Zulficar says the platform's goals go beyond monetization. "We want to change the idea that the platform is just to make money, that's not the essence of the project; [in fact] our objective is to change that mindset and that perception that monetization is what’s important here. The platform serves to help artists to professionalize and support themselves", underlined the music entrepreneur who also sponsors a radio program. The program aims to promote the most played songs and the most followed artists during the week. It is presented by José Nhaca at Kfm (88.3) on Saturdays, from 3pm onwards. "Right now, we have more than 290 artists registered on the platform and more than 3,000 subscribers. We have set a target of 20,000 subscribers by the end of 2022", he said. The Apathany platform can be accessed via a smartphone or a computer. Zulficar Braimo made it known that the technical team is working to develop a platform application to support the Android and iOS systems, in order to enhance user experience and to streamline interactions between artists and fans.

Rui Tenreiro in Stockholm, Sweden Written by: Eliana

The state of mind in which we find Rui Tenreiro may well be characteristic of his artistic soul: in transition, evolving and always discovering.

enreiro has lived in the Swedish capital long enough to feel at ease in that city. With an MFA – Master of Fine Arts – in storytelling, he left Maputo to pursue a master's degree and has more recently embraced creative strategy: “I work with ideas, with writing and with image”, he writes to Xonguila Magazine. By his own admission, he has been an artist in recent years, but he has a new professional challenge at hand that is forcing him to think more strategically.

dents who come from the north of the country to study in Maputo, which I thought was important”, shares Rui.

In building a timeline of Tenreiro's creative work, we can find a range of artistic expressions: photography, literature, illustration, filmmaking. If he had to choose a favourite, he would stick with the seventh art, although he is aware that his biggest challenge is keeping everyone satisfied, including himself. An example of his completed work is evident in the animated film “The Tower” (directed by Mats Grorud), where he was in charge of the Art Direction. It tells the saga of a Palestinian girl in a refugee camp in Lebanon, proposing that the founding of the State of Israel resulted in the displacement of almost five hundred thousand Palestinians. The film was shown at renowned international festivals and Rui's work was considered “excellent” by the North American magazine Hollywood Reporter. “I am a curious and multifaceted creative with a wide range of interests, who likes to question things, discover truths and align strategic brand solutions to concepts that solve real, often invisible, root problems” – states Rui Tenreiro on his website. The almost 15-thousand-kilometer distance that separates Maputo from Stockholm does not prevent Tenreiro from thinking about personal projects related to Africa, even though they are almost as far from being realized as the two cities are distant from each other: the publication of a book about African artists (not only Mozambicans), and a small gathering space for cultural activities are his elected initiatives. “Giving equal opportunity in the cultural domain (creation of, access to, among others) from South to North, in this large and culturally diverse country, a country that also has more urgent challenges than cultural production. This must be acknowledged in order to determine the best approach to culture. And how is the Mozambican heat revived in the cold of Northern Europe? Through culture, of course. It is while preparing his morning coffee that Rui Tenreiro listens to the Gaza Provincial Broadcast – 90.9 FM, Xai-Xai – or the national television channel STV. Fortunately for the artist, and for those curious about Mozambican culture, the Stockholm public library has Portuguese editions of books by Paulina Chiziane, Mia Couto, Nelson Saúte, Luís Bernardo Honwana, among others. In addition, Rui Tenreiro dissipates nostalgia when, at least once a year, he visits Mozambique.

His growth and development are probably the result of his more creative nature and, therefore, Rui Tenreiro tries to listen to people whose opinions and views are different from his own: “I don't have many dominant influences, diversity is good. In terms of advertising strategy, for example, I think Praveen Vaidyanathan is brilliant”, he teaches us.

T

The pilão, a "pillar" in our society

he pilão is an essential culinary utensil in Mozambican and African cuisine in general, used to grind food. It is normally made out of a trunk of soft wood, with dimensions that vary between 30 and 70 cm in height, which is hollowed out using artisanal methods until it takes on the necessary shape. The material to be ground is placed inside the cavity, which is then beaten with a smooth wooden club (the pilão stick, akin to an oversized pestle), measuring 60 to 120 cm (depending on the size of the pilão), made of a harder wood and with a rounded end on the grinding side. The pilão can be used by several people at the same time, each one holding a stick which they use to alternately beat the contents inside the cavity. They often sing some songs to accompany their movements and beating, resulting in a light socializing moment. There are pilões (plural of pilão) of various dimensions, depending on their purpose. The larger ones are generally used to crush and pound cereals such as corn, beans and sorghum, as well as various edible greens, and to shell rice, among others. The smaller ones

are usually employed to crush foods in smaller amounts, such as garlic, peanuts and cashews, ingredients of the famous peanut curry and other dishes. The pilão stick can also be used separately, to obtain a more finely ground paste: for example, corn already ground in a larger pilão is mixed with water in wide earthenware containers, where the pilão stick is used in a circular motion to incorporate the ingredients. People say that a home without a pilão is a house without pillars – therefore, without structure. In southern Mozambique, the pilão is one of the objects normally offered to the bride and groom in a ceremony called Xiguiane, on the day after the wedding, as it is considered to strengthen the feeling of unity within the family. Other cultures have instruments with physical characteristics and functions similar to the traditional Mozambican pilão. For example, the mortar and pestle, which has smaller dimensions, is also used to grind small quantities of products. It is used in cooking, but also in chemical laboratories. Formerly an essential part in compounding pharmacies, it has been replaced by contemporary electronic instruments.

The texts included in this anthology are inspired by Mozambique´s 16-year civil war. A conflict that involved citizens of the same homeland, degladiating each other over endless years. The writers, each in their own way, lived through and felt this war, imagined it and, finally, wrote it out, as a form of reflection.

eeking a blessing on the day of the birth ceremony of her eldest son, Sakina (Islam Mubarak) receives a curse instead, due to past family disputes. The village elder prophesies that her son, Muzamil (played first by Moatasem Rashed and then, as a teenager, by Mustafa Shehata), would die when he turned 20 years old. Muzamil's father, a troubled man, is very indignant at this, can't stand the curse and ends up creating conflicts with his wife, ultimately breaking the family bond.

This feature film is a milestone in the film scene in Sudan, a country martyred by war that was practically without cinema for 30 years, but with many stories to tell. A perfect tale that represents the beautiful culture of this region of northeast Africa, its customs, religious beliefs and way of life.

Growing up with only his mother and under the constant spectre of death, Muzamil places an enormous value on life, becoming increasingly curious about what it means to live intensely, often even beyond limits.
