Relaxe Nkwichi Lodge

he Nkwichi Lodge is situated on a beautiful white sandy beach on Lake Niassa. The main building boasts two floors, carefully designed to incorporate the local landscape with incredible views of the lake. There are no roads within a 10 km radius, which helps create an extra sense of tranquillity. The lodge has 7 exclusive chalets, for a maximum of 14 occupants, offering guests total privacy.

Each chalet has large rooms with thatched roofs, hot water showers embedded in trees and tubs built into the rocks. The suspended beds on the balconies are ideal for watching the sunset accompanied by an unforgettable meal. The service provided by the staff made up of duly specialized locals is quite friendly and attentive. The fresh water of the lake is crystal clear, populated by a largest variety of native fish species in any lake in the world.

There are numerous recreational activities available, ranging from adventure to total relaxation. You can swim or take a dip in the lake, go canoeing, explore the game reserve, visit the local villages and take part in community projects. This lodge is proud of practicing responsible methods of developing tourism locally, as well as to commit to protecting the environment and contribute to the prosperity of the community.

seu percurso artístico. Desde cedo mostrou aptidões para artes visuais e plásticas, que de algum modo encaminharam o seu percurso de estudante até ao curso de arquitectura. Os conhecimentos que adquiriu permitiram-lhe trabalhar durante alguns anos com o reputado arquitecto José Forjaz, que acabou por ser muito importante na sua formação, tornando-se mesmo seu mentor. Na cada vez mais difícil possibilidade de viver apenas como artista, sem necessidade de outras ocupações para sustentar a sua paixão – devido em parte à falta de curadores e críticos no panorama moçambicano –, diz ter tido a sorte de se ter cruzado com pessoas que gostaram do seu trabalho e o ajudaram a divulgar o seu nome e as suas obras.

ncontrámo-nos com Filipe Branquinho, o artista convidado deste mês, no seu estúdio. O sol enchia o espaço de luz, revelando os seus traços no papel de algodão do seu último trabalho. Filipe, fotógrafo e artista plástico, falou-nos um pouco de si. Nasceu em 1977, em Maputo, na então ainda jovem República de Moçambique. Diz ter crescido num ambiente privilegiado, convivendo de perto com fotógrafos afirmados numa época em que a cultura moçambicana florescia vivamente. Recorda-se de, ainda criança, haver muitas exposições na Associação Moçambicana de Fotografia, onde por vezes podia apreciar, em primeira mão, os papéis que chegavam para impressão. Em ocasiões mais raras, tinha a sorte de poder mexer nas câmaras dos seus ídolos, Rangel, Cabral, Kok Nam, facto que marcou indubitavelmente o

Ao início, o fascínio pela fotografia levou-o a fotografar de tudo um pouco, mas, graças a algumas exposições que fez no Brasil, começou a definir o seu trabalho, uma mistura de fotografia de rua (street photography) com fotografia documental, mas sempre com muito foco na arquitectura, no espaço e nas pessoas, interagindo todos no mesmo contexto. A sua participação como artista convidado na exposição “Ocupações Temporárias”, com curadoria de Elisa Santos, permitiu que o seu trabalho artístico começasse a ganhar posicionamento no mundo da arte. A série “Ocupações“ que desenvolveu ganhou muita aceitação, definindo o seu rumo como artista e afirmando-o como fotógrafo documental. Decorria o ano de 2011, mas tão profundamente em si se enraizou, que ainda hoje se tenta livrar das amarras desse projecto, que persiste como referência e inspiração. As suas influências são a sua vida do dia-a-dia, as viagens, as suas leituras, mas, em termos de fotografia, foi sem dúvida José Cabral que o influenciou, embora também Kok e Rangel. Não segue propriamente um método estruturado para a criação dos seus projectos. Por vezes, à medida que vai fotografando, cruza-se com uma temática e um conceito comum, e daí nasce um estudo mais aprofundado sobre o tema. Outras vezes, parte para a obra com uma ideia pré-concebida. A cidade é o elemento com que mais gosta de trabalhar. Não faz sentido fotografar algo ou uma pessoa sem a devida contextualização do lugar onde se integra. Já a sua ferramenta de trabalho indispensável considera ser o seu conjunto de canetas, vital para qualquer das suas actividades, inclusive fotografia, onde muitas vezes é necessário esboçar ideias.

O seu trabalho faz indirectamente comentários sobre questões sociais ou políticas actuais, porque, sendo de carácter documental,

retrata obrigatoriamente a realidade actual e tudo o que a influencia. Apesar de não ser uma crítica direccionada, ou de não ser esse o seu foco principal, essa voz crítica acaba por ser uma base que levanta questões e reflexões. O reconhecimento pelo seu trabalho, por todo o esforço desenvolvido ao longo dos anos, é sem dúvida algo a que fica muito grato e que lhe dá mais motivação para continuar a criar novos projectos. O reconhecimento recebido abre muitas portas e possibilidades, pelo que não é necessário esperar por feedback para prosseguir. Ganha-se força e vitalidade, diz. O trabalho deixa de ser apenas seu pois a sua mensagem chega aos outros. Ganha-se voz. Perguntámos qual a sua opinião sobre o financiamento da cultura por parte do Governo. Respondeu-nos que se fala muito de Moçambique no estrangeiro, seja sobre o gás, o carvão, a crise, mas que o que cria a identidade de um país é a sua cultura. É isso que distingue Moçambique dos outros países, mas hoje em dia o país está preso ao estilo de vida ocidental. Os EUA e a Europa vendem o seu modo de vida, e Moçambique abraça-o, através de designers, realizadores de cinema, fotógrafos, escritores, etc. Por isso, o apoio do Governo é fundamental, para ajudar o país a preservar a sua própria identidade. Com a independência de Moçambique, houve a necessidade de criar heróis nas diversas vertentes culturais: Malangatana (pintura), Craveirinha (poesia), Rangel (fotografia), e muitos outros. Agora corre-se o risco de se perderem as novas identidades por não serem apoiadas. O melhor conselho que recebeu e que pode dar é o de que devem fazer-se as coisas por gosto, tentar lembrar o porquê de se ter começado a traçar o caminho e seguir um pouco aquele sonho de criança, sem nunca perder a genuína paixão por fazer as coisas.

e met with Filipe Branquinho, the guest artist of this month, in his studio. The sun filled room with light, revealing the strokes of his last work on the cotton paper. Filipe, a photographer and a plastic artist, told us a little about himself. He was born in Maputo in1977, in a very young Republic of Mozambique. acclaimed photographers at a time when Mozambican culture flourished strongly. He recalled that, as a child, there were many exhibitions at the Mozambican Photography Association, where he could sometimes see, first hand, the papers that came for print. On rare occasions, he was fortunate enough to be able to play with his idols’ cameras, Rangel, Cabral, Kok Nam, which undoubtedly marked his artistic career.

From an early age he showed skills for visual and plastic arts, which somehow turned his academic path towards an architecture degree. The knowledge he acquired allowed him to work for a few years with the renowned architect José Forjaz, who became very important in his training, even becoming his mentor. In the increasingly difficult possibility of living only as an artist, with no need for other occupations to support his passion - due in part to the lack of curators and critics in the Mozambican panorama - Filipe recognizes he was lucky to have met people who liked of his work and helped him to spread his name and his works. At first, the fascination with photography led him to photograph a little of everything, however, thanks to some exhibitions he made in Brazil, he began to define his work, a mixture of street photography with documentary photography, but always focusing on architecture, space and people, all interacting in the same context. His participation as a guest artist in the exhibition "Temporary Occupations", curated by Elisa Santos, allowed his artistic work to gain a foothold in the art world. The series " Ocupaciones" that he developed gained much acceptance, defining his direction as an artist as he affirmed himself as a documentary photographer. This exhibition took place in 2011, but it is deeply rooted in him, so much so that he still tries to free him-

self from this project, which remains a reference and inspiration. His influences are his dayto-day, trips, reading, but in terms of photography, it was undoubtedly Jose Cabral who influenced him the most, but also Kok and Rangel. Filipe does not follow a structured method for the creation of his projects. Sometimes, as you go about photographing, you come across a theme and a common concept, and from that comes a more in-depth study on the subject. Other times, he begins his work with a pre-conceived idea. The city is the element that he most enjoys working with. It does not make sense to photograph something or a person without the due contextualization of the place it integrates. His set of pens are his indispensable work tools, vital for any of his activities, including photography, where it is often necessary to sketch ideas. Filipe’s work indirectly comments on current social or political issues due to its documentary nature, his work portrays the current reality and all that influences it. Despite not being a targeted criticism, or the main focus, this critical voice turns out to be a foundation that raises questions and reflections. The recognition for his work, for all the effort over the years, is undoubtedly something for which he is very

grateful and that gives him more motivation to continue creating new projects. The recognition received opens many doors and possibilities, although feedback is not necessary to proceed, giving him strength and vitality. The work is no longer just yours because your message reaches others. Giving it a voice. We asked his opinion on the Government’s financing of culture. He answered that there is much talk of Mozambique abroad, regarding gas, coal, the crisis, but what creates the identity of a country is its culture. This is what distinguishes Mozambique from other countries, but today the country is stuck in the Western way of life. The US and Europe sell their way of life, and Mozambique embraces it, through designers, filmmakers, photographers, writers, etc. So, Government's support is essential to help the country preserve its own identity. With Mozambique’s independence, there was the need to create heroes in the various cultural areas: Malangatana (painting), Craveirinha (poetry), Rangel (photography), and many others. There is now a risk that the new identities will be lost because they are not supported. The best advice I received and that he can share is that things should be done for pleasure, try to remember the reason why you started on that path and follow that childhood dream a little, without losing the genuine passion for doing things.

INGREDIENTES: • 500 g de folhas de mandioca • 6 dentes de alho • 4 malaguetas • 500 g de camarão • 1 litro de leite de coco • 1 chávena de farinha de amendoim • 1 colher de chá de sal

Lavam-se muito bem as folhas de mandioca e pilam-se juntamente com o alho e as malaguetas. Leva-se o preparado a cozer numa panela sem água e junta-se um pouco sal. Depois de a água natural evaporar, acrescentam-se os camarões, já cortados, e o leite de coco e deixa-se ferver. Para terminar, deita-se a farinha de amendoim e deixa-se apurar durante aproximadamente uma hora. Serve-se com arroz branco.

Chef’s suggestion Matapa Wash the cassava leaves very well and crush them together with the garlic and the chili peppers. Cook in a pan without water and add a bit of salt. After moisture evaporates from the leaves add the chopped prawns and coconut milk and allow to boil. To finish, pour the peanut flour and let it stew for about an hour. Entrevista realizada no Polana Serena Hotel

Director de Investimento e Desenvolvimento do Instituto Nacional do Turismo (INATUR)

Qual a importância do sector do turismo para a economia do nosso país? Neste momento, medir o real contributo do sector ainda constitui um desafio. Se olharmos para 2017, baseando-nos somente nas informações do INE e do Banco de Moçambique, diremos que ronda os 2,2% do PIB nacional. Utilizando também a conta satélite do turismo, uma metodologia que permite obter mais alguns dados sobre a actividade, podemos constatar que o contributo é um pouco mais que o dobro, portanto, cerca de 4,5% do PIB, no caso moçambicano. No entanto, se formos olhar para o último relatório do World Travel & Tourism Council, uma entidade reputada internacionalmente, o turismo contribui com 8% para o PIB nacional. Isto comprova que o valor varia consoante a metodologia de análise aplicada. O peso do turismo a nível mundial corresponde a 10% do PIB mundial, ou seja, um em cada dez postos de trabalho no mundo está relacionado com esta actividade, envolvendo 1,4 trilhões de dólares americanos por ano em exportações, 1,2 bilhões de chegadas internacionais e 6% do comércio internacional. Isto revela a importância do turismo a nível mundial. Nos últimos anos em Moçambique tivemos uma média de entradas de cerca de 1,7 milhões de visitantes, mas temos como objectivo chegar aos 4 milhões. Em termos de emprego, temos cerca

de 65.000 pessoas a trabalhar na área, o que representa um crescimento na ordem dos 50% face aos últimos 5 anos. Em 2013 tínhamos 45.000 postos. A carência de mão-de-obra especializada é grande. Como pretendem combatê-la? Está prevista a criação de novos centros de formação na área? Sim, de facto existe uma certa carência de mão-de-obra, no entanto, não existe falta de formação técnico-profissional, porque o Ministério de Ciência e Tecnologia criou vários locais de ensino. Infelizmente, ainda não conseguimos conquistar a credibilidade desejada no sector privado. Nós, INATUR e Ministério da Cultura e Turismo, estamos a trabalhar nesse sentido. É necessário perceber se a tecnologia e os equipamentos existentes são os mais adequados, assim como se os formadores estão devidamente capacitados para atingir os standards exigidos internacionalmente. Temos de encarar o turismo sempre numa perspectiva global. Gostaríamos de investir mais na formação, e temos como projecto a abertura de um novo centro de formação especializado, devidamente equipado, para Maputo. Mais tarde pretendemos expandir para as zonas centro e norte. Estamos neste momento à procura de parceiros para podermos executar este projecto.

Qual é a maior preocupação da sua direcção neste momento? Existem alguns pontos que requerem a nossa devida atenção. Há carência de infra-estruturas básicas em zonas com alto potencial turístico. Nos últimos 10 a 15 anos, identificámos várias zonas que ainda não conseguimos potenciar devido à falta destas infra-estruturas. Estamos a falar de zonas riquíssimas em termos de recursos naturais. Temos problemas como os acessos, aéreos ou rodoviários, assim como o fornecimento de água e energia. Sem estas componentes básicas, é difícil termos investidores comprometidos com a causa aqui em Moçambique. Estas são as grandes preocupações da nossa direcção. Temos tentado coordenar com o sector de Obras Públicas as acções a serem feitas de forma a colmatar estas dificuldades. A nível internacional, os outros países começam por ordenar e organizar as suas zonas com infra-estruturas básicas, onde posteriormente os investidores encontram as condições mínimas para operar e investir, o que facilita o trabalho dos promotores. mos a tentar incutir também esta realidade no nosso país. O ordenamento territorial é, de facto, uma grande preocupação. No entanto, a nossa maior dificuldade tem a ver com os recursos financeiros, pois o orçamento anual para promoção turística é de cerca de meio milhão de dólares. Comparando com os outros países da região: no Malawi e na Suazilândia, é superior a 2 milhões de dólares; as Seicheles ou o Botswana têm orçamentos superiores a 10 milhões de dólares; e ainda a África do Sul tem mais de 50 milhões de dólares. Quando Moçambique pretende posicionar-se como um destino de referência e trabalha com o nosso actual orçamento, são perceptíveis as nossas limitações e dificuldades para fazer a máquina trabalhar. Para si, qual é o elemento diferenciador na área, entre Moçambique e os outros países da região? Nós costumamos dizer que temos tudo o que os vizinhos têm e algo mais. Eles não têm as nossas maravilhosas praias, com temperaturas

bastante agradáveis durante todo o ano. Na combinação bush/beach, temos a vantagem de podermos ter a experiência de estar numa área de conservação e a poucos minutos de uma praia paradisíaca. Dou-vos como exemplo Maputo. Agora, com a ponte para a Catembe, podemos usufruir de toda a riqueza cultural e urbana da cidade e, numa curta viagem, podemos ver elefantes e outras espécies na Reserva Especial de Maputo, e ainda, logo de seguida, podemos fazer mergulho com golfinhos na praia da Ponta do Ouro. O factor humano é também um elemento diferencial muito importante. O nosso povo é muito acolhedor e provém de uma mistura cultural incrível. Como avalia a actividade, nas províncias e fora dos grandes centros? Cada província tem os seus produtos específicos de turismo e factores diferenciadores. Só a província de Inhambane constitui 60% das visitas de turistas internacionais, o que demostra o valor do turismo de sol e praia. Devido à grande diversidade de possibilidades no nosso país, o visitante pode usufruir de uma vasta oferta. O país é muito extenso, tem de se definir um foco, um ponto de partida. Desta forma, o governo definiu cinco áreas prioritárias onde apostará inicialmente na promoção, investimento, marketing e formação. Estas áreas são: zona de Maputo, Reserva Especial, incluindo a Ponta do Ouro; área de Vilanculos, Bazaruto até Inhassoro, mais focada no turismo de sol e praia; a terceira área, focada no ecoturismo, com parques e reservas como a Gorongosa, o parque de Chimanimani, entre outros; outro destaque para a região das Quirimbas, Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Ilha de Moçambique e toda aquela esplêndida costa; e, por último, o Niassa, com o seu lago – um dos maiores do mundo –, montanhas e a reserva. A Cultura joga um papel fundamental no nosso sector. Temos imenso artesanato, temos danças como o Nhau, Tufo, Mapiko e Xigubo, temos escritores como José Craveirinha, Paulina Chiziane e Mia Couto, temos na pintura referências como Ntaluma, Naguib, Malanga-

tana e até temos na liderança do nosso sector um artista de créditos firmados. Estes factores, entre outros, colocam a cultura como um grande trunfo para o desenvolvimento do Turismo. Acredita no contributo de plataformas online, como por exemplo Airbnb, Uber e Booking? São uma realidade em Moçambique? Acredito que sim. Estive a analisar alguns estudos do Airbnb, e constato que as pessoas que utilizam esta plataforma ficam 2 vezes mais tempo num determinado local do que as que optavam somente por um hotel, e desta forma acabam por gastar mais nesse local. Apesar de ser um segmento local, quem procura este serviço quer ter uma experiência mais presente numa determinada região. No caso específico de Maputo, já existe este serviço, embora ainda não tenha a adesão de outros locais. Temos pouco mais de 300 unidades registadas, com uma média de 600 camas disponíveis. A Uber ainda não é uma realidade, mas acredito que seja uma questão de tempo, até que entre no nosso mercado esta ou outra empresa semelhante. As plataformas de reserva como o Booking são bastante utilizadas, o que ajuda o destino a ser bem promovido. Não nos podemos esquecer também do TripAdvisor. Hoje em dia as pessoas dão muita importância ao marketing boca a boca, e, através desta plataforma, os visitantes podem perceber e avaliar como foi a experiência de uma outra na pessoa num determinado local, planeando assim melhor as suas viagens. No entanto, existe algo a ser trabalhado no que diz respeito à parte tributária neste tipo de plataformas. É necessário chegar-se a um consenso, legalizá-las devidamente e fazer com que todas as partes envolvidas cumpram com as suas obrigações. Temos de olhá-las como algo economicamente favorável, desde que se cumpram todas as regras e requisitos. Os moçambicanos estão a viajar mais? Internamente ou para fora do país? Não existem estatísticas fiáveis acerca deste tema. No entanto, eu e os meus colegas acre-

Que medidas estão a ser planeadas para haver uma maior aposta neste sector? O governo actual definiu o turismo como uma das áreas prioritárias a investir. É a primeira vez que algo assim acontece. Graças a isto, algumas medidas foram tomadas e outras também o serão certamente. O diálogo com o sector privado foi uma grande aposta. Diversas leis foram aprovadas com o intuito de flexibilizar tudo o que são autorizações e licenciamentos de empreendimentos turísticos. Foram também reduzidos timings e requisitos com o objectivo de facilitar. Abrimos mais o espaço aéreo, deixando de existir um monopólio nas rotas domésticas com a entrada da Fastjet. Acreditamos que até ao final do ano possam surgir mais dois operadores, o que tornará os preços mais competitivos. Outro aspecto facilitador foi a introdução do visto de fronteira. Neste momento qualquer cidadão de outra nacionalidade poderá adquirir o visto numa fronteira rodoviária ou aérea. É importante referir que o preço do visto também foi revisto, para um preço standard aqui da região. Estamos a trabalhar também no licenciamento electrónico, para que seja mais rápida a legalização, e foi desenvolvido um pacote especial para quem pretenda investir no turismo em Moçambique. Estas foram algumas das medidas que tomámos em prol do sector, e serão ainda tomadas outras. Está-se a criar um ambiente bastante favorável para o investimento nesta actividade. uma das grandes referências do continente africano. A riqueza natural está cá, agora há que potenciá-la. Estamos com uma média que ainda não atinge os 2 milhões de turistas por ano. Acredito que em 10 anos atingiremos pelo menos o dobro. Fruto do trabalho que temos realizado juntamente com o sector privado, recebemos prémios internacionais nos empreendimentos em Bazaruto e Quirimbas, mas não queremos ficar somente por aqui. A sustentabilidade da conservação da natureza está directamente relacionada com o turismo nesse ramo. Veja-se o caso do Kruger Park e muitos outros exemplos em diversos países africanos. Há estratégias nesse sentido a adoptar em Moçambique para além da reserva Nacional da Gorongosa? A Gorongosa naturalmente é a reserva que tem mais destaque, tendo em conta o nível de investimento e investidores que estão envolvidos no projecto. Tem sido feito um grande trabalho por parte da Administração Nacional das Áreas de Conservação, um organismo afecto ao Ministério da Terra, Ambiente e Desenvolvimento Rural, para que existam mais concessões nas áreas de conservação, mais oportunidades de co-gestão, combate à caça ilegal, investimentos e repovoamento da fauna. Na primeira semana de Junho haverá uma conferência de investimentos na área da conservação, algo que poderá ser bastante interessante para os empresários. Aqui bem perto existe um grande ícone turístico bastante competitivo no mercado internacional, as Ilhas Seicheles. Que estratégias devemos adoptar para sermos mais competitivos e atractivos do que esse pólo de atracção? Se quisermos alcançar os standards internacionais, é necessário avançar por fases. As medidas recentemente tomadas já foram um grande contributo. Temos uma estratégia de marketing definida, já sabemos quem é o target e acredito que seja uma questão tempo alcançarmos, talvez até superarmos, o nível das Seicheles. O que sente quando constata que há mais turistas a visitar o nosso país? Um sentimento enorme de satisfação. É muito bom ver que o nosso trabalho está a ser feito devidamente.

ditamos que sim, estamos a adquirir cada vez mais a cultura da viajar. Podemos constatar esta situação quando existe um fim-de-semana prolongado. As unidades hoteleiras ficam lotadas, o que é, já de si, um sinal de que o povo moçambicano está a viajar mais. Os números começam a ser animadores. Sabemos que muitas vezes os turistas nacionais reclamam os preços, mas temos que perceber que os empreendimentos turísticos têm também custos elevados, pois têm de importar quase tudo para que possam operar. O quadro económico actual de Moçambique e a desvalorização do metical fez com que procurássemos mais opções dentro do território nacional, o que de certa forma é bom para a nossa economia.

How important is the tourism sector to the economy of our country? Measuring the real contribution of the sector is still a challenge at this moment. If we look at 2017, based only on information from INE and Banco de Moçambique, we will say that it is around 2,2% of the national GDP. Using the tourism satellite account, a methodology to get some more data on the activity, we note that the contribution is double, so about 4, 5% of GDP. However, if we look at the latest Tourism Council World Report, a reputed entity internationally, tourism contributes up to 8% to the national GDP. This proves that the value varies according to the analysis methodology applied. The weight of the world tourism accounts for 10% of world GDP, one in ten jobs in the world is related to this activity, involving 1. 4 trillion dollars a year in exports, 1.2 billion of international arrivals and 6% of international trade. This reveals the importance of tourism worldwide. In recent years in Mozambique we had an average of about 1.7 million visitors, but we aim to reach 4 million. In terms of employment, we have about 65,000 people working in the sector, which represents an increase of around 50% over the last 5 years. In 2013 we had 45,000 jobs in the sector. The shortage of skilled labour is great. How do you intend to combat this shortage? Is there a plan to create new training centres in the sector? Yes, there is a certain shortage of labour, however, there is no lack of technical and professional training, because the Ministry of Science and Technology has created several learning institutions. the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is working towards this. It is necessary to know if the technology and the existing equipment are the most adequate, as well as if the trainers are duly qualified to reach the standards demanded internationally. We must always look at tourism from a global perspective. We would like to invest more in training, and we have as project the opening of a new specialized training centre, duly equipped, for Maputo. Later we plan to expand to the central and northern regions. We are currently looking for partners to be able to execute this project. What is the biggest worry in your department at this point? There are some points that require our attention. There is a lack of infrastructure - basic structures in areas with high tourist potential. Over the past 10 to 15 years, we have identified several areas that still cannot reach their full potential due to the lack of these infra-structures. And we are talking about very rich areas in terms of natural resources. We have problems such as access, by air or road, as well as the provision of water and energy. Without these basic components, it is difficult for investors to commit to Mozambique. These are our management’s major concerns. We tried to coordinate with the Public Works sector to overcome these difficulties. Internationally, other countries begin to sort and organize their areas with basic infrastructure, where later investors have the minimum requirements to operate and invest, facilitating the work of promotors. We are also trying to instil this reality in our country. Land-use planning is, in fact, a major concern. However, our biggest difficulty has to do with the financial resources as the annual budget for tourism promotion is about

half a million dollars. Comparing with other countries in the region: in Malawi and Swaziland it is more than 2 million dollars; Seychelles and Botswana have budgets in excess of $ 10 million; and South Africa has more than $ 50 million. When Mozambique intends to position itself as a reference destination and works with our current budget, our limitations and difficulties to make the machine work are clear. For you, what is Mozambique’s differentiating element in the sector, relative to other countries in the region? We usually say we have everything the neighbours have and something else. They do not have our wonderful beaches, with quite pleasant temperatures all year round. In the bush/beach combination, we have the advantage of having conservation areas just minutes from a paradisiac beaches. I give you as an example Maputo. At the moment, with the bridge to Catembe, we can enjoy all the cultural and urban wealth of the city and, on a short trip, we can see elephants and other species in the Maputo Special Reserve, and soon after we can dive with dolphins on the beach of Ponta do Ouro. The human factor is also a very important differential element. Our people are very welcoming from an amazing cultural mix. How do you assess the sector, in the provinces and outside the major urban centres? Each province has its specific tourism products and differentiating factors. The Inhambane Province alone constitutes 60% of the visits of international tourists, which demonstrates the value of sun and beach tourism. Due to the great diversity of possibilities in our country, the visitor can enjoy a wide offer. The country is very extensive, it has to define a focus, a starting point. Thus, the government set c i nco priority areas where initially bet on promotion, investment, marketing and training. These areas are: Maputo area, Special Reserve ,

including Ponta do Ouro; Vilanculos area, Bazaruto to Inhassoro , more focused on sun and beach tourism; the third area , focused on ecotourism with parks and reserves like Gorongosa, the Chimanimani park, among others. Another highlight for the region of the Quirimbas, Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Mozambique Island boasting an expended coast; and finally, Niassa Province, home to one of the largest in the world, mountains and a nature reserve.

through this platform, visitors can see and evaluate how the experience of another person was in a particular place, helping to plan their trips better. However, there is something to be worked out in regard to the tax system in this type of platforms. A consensus must be reached, to legalize them properly and to make all parties involved comply with their obligations. We must look at them as economically favourable, provided that all the rules and requirements are met.

Culture plays a fundamental role in our sector. We have immense craftsmanship, we have dances like Nhau, Tufo, Mapiko and Xigubo, we have writers like José Craveirinha, Paulina Chiziane and Mia Couto, we have in the painting references such as Ntaluma, Naguib, Malangatana and even we have at the head of our sector a credit artist signed. These factors, among others, place culture as a great asset for the development of Tourism.

Are Mozambicans traveling more? Internally or out of the country? There are no reliable statistics on this topic. However, my colleagues and I believe that yes, we are acquiring more and more the culture of traveling. We can see this when there is a long weekend. The hotel units are packed, which is, itself, a sign of the Mozambican people traveling more. The numbers begin to be encouraging. We know that often the domestic tourists complain about the prices, but we have to realize that tourism projects also high costs as they have to import almost everything, so they can operate. The current economic framework of Mozambique and the devaluation of the metical has made us look for more options within the national territory, which in a way is good for our economy.

Do you believe in the contribution of online platforms, such as Airbnb, Uber and eBooking ? Are they a reality in Mozambique? I believe so. I've been looking at some Airbnb studies, and I find that people who use this platform stay twice as long in a certain place than those who only opt for a hotel, so they end up spending more at that location. Although it is a local segment, those looking for this service want to have a more present experience in a certain region. For instance, this service already exists in Maputo, although it does not yet have adhesion in other places. We have just over 300 registered units, with an average of 600 beds available. Uber is not yet a reality, but I believe it's a matter of time, until this or a similar company enters our market. Booking platforms like Booking are heavily used, which helps the destination to be well promoted. Do not forget also TripAdvisor. Nowadays people give a lot of importance to word of mouth marketing, and

What measures are being planned to make a greater investment in this sector? The current government has defined tourism as one of the priority sectors of investment. This is the first time something like this has happened. Thanks to this, some measures have been taken and others will certainly be taken. Dialogue with the private sector was very important. Several laws have been approved with the purpose of making everything that is authorizations and licenses of tourist enterprises flexible. Timings and requirements have also been reduced in order to facilitate investment. More open airspace

How do you imagine tourism in Mozambique in ten years? I imagine Mozambique positioned as one of the great references of the African continent. Natural wealth is here, now it must be strength-

ened. We have an average that still does not reach 2 million tourists per year. I believe that in 10 years we will reach at least double. Because of the work we have done together with the private sector, we have received international awards in the projects in Bazaruto and Quirimbas, but this is just the beginning. The sustainability of nature conservation is directly related to tourism. Take the case of Kruger Park and many other examples in various African countries. Is there a similar strategy in Mozambique beyond the Gorongosa’s National Reserve? Gorongosa is of course the most prominent reserve, given the level of investment and investors involved in the project. Much work has been done by the National Administration of Conservation Areas, a body assigned to the Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development, so that there are more concessions in conservation areas, more opportunities for co-management, fight against poaching, investments and restocking of

the fauna. In the first week of June there will be an investment conference on conservation, something that may be very interesting for entrepreneurs. The Seychelles Islands are a world renown tourism icon in the very competitive international market and these are very close to Mozambique. What strategies should be adopted to become more competitive and attractive than such an attractive competitor? If we are to meet international standards, it is necessary to proceed in stages. The measures recently taken have already been a great contribution. We have a defined marketing strategy, we already know what our target is and I believe that it is a question of time that we will reach, perhaps even surpass, the level of the Seychelles. What do you feel knowing that there are more tourists visiting our country? A huge sense of satisfaction. It's great to see that our work is being done properly.

and a monopoly on domestic routes no longer exists with newcomer Fastjet. We believe that by the end of the year two more operators will appear, which will make prices more competitive. Another facilitating aspect was the introduction of border visas. Currently any citizen of another nationality can acquire the visa at an overland or air border. It is important to note that the price of the visa has also been revised and set according to standard pricing in the region. We are also working on electronic licensing, fast track legalization, and have developed a special package for those who intend to invest in tourism in Mozambique. These were some of the measures taken in favour of the sector and more improvements are expected to create a very favourable environment for investment in the tourism industry.

Notas Gerais: Foi recentemente publicado o Decreto-lei nº 1/2018, que entrou imediatamente em vigor, e altera o Código Comercial, com o intuito de simplificar o processo de constituição e funcionamento das sociedades comerciais, proteger o sócio minoritário e garantir transparência no que toca às contas das sociedades.

consentimento do titular dado em Assembleia Geral, excepto se houver um uso abusivo dos mesmos ou violação dos deveres respectivos por parte do sócio titular; • São estabelecidas as condições de acesso dos sócios às actas da Assembleia Geral (acesso livre) e do Conselho de Administração (mediante prévia autorização).

Apresentamos, neste artigo, um sumário das principais alterações. 1. Processo de Constituição de Sociedades Comerciais • Remoção da imposição de reconhecimento presencial da assinatura dos sócios, que passa a ser feito por semelhança (artigo 90); • Definição da sede social no domicílio particular de um dos sócios, caso não se possa definir concretamente a sede da sociedade (artigo 94); • Clareza no que toca à realização do capital social em dinheiro, em espécie ou em ambos (artigo 112); • Publicação do pacto social em Boletim da República por extracto simplificado, que deve conter os elementos específicos constantes do artigo 247; • Possibilidade de obtenção, por qualquer interessado, de cópia integral do pacto social de qualquer sociedade comercial junto da Conservatória do Registo das Entidades Legais (artigo 247).

3. Assembleia Geral A nova redacção do artigo 130 confere aos sócios o direito mais amplo de representação em Assembleia Geral, nomeadamente, por familiar (cônjuge, descendente ou ascendente), por outro sócio, por administrador, por terceiro ou por mandatário, bastando, para o efeito, uma simples carta mandadeira assinada pelo sócio, sem qualquer outra formalidade, dirigida ao presidente da Mesa da Assembleia Geral.

2. Direitos dos sócios • O artigo 105 introduz direitos especiais de sócio, que podem ser conferidos a qualquer sócio, independentemente do montante do capital social detido; • Os referidos direitos especiais não podem ser suprimidos, coarctados ou modificados sem o

As actas da Assembleia Geral podem ser lavradas em documento avulso, contendo simplesmente a assinatura dos sócios. 4. Deveres dos Administradores O artigo 150 torna mais claros os deveres dos administradores, proibindo-os, expressamente, de celebrar contratos com a sociedade, obter garantias da sociedade, receber adiantamentos de mais de um mês de remuneração mensal, receber de terceiros qualquer vantagem pessoal em razão do exercício do cargo, entre outros. 5. Balanço e Contas Anuais Passa a ser obrigatório o depósito, na Conservatória do Registo de Entidades Legais, do balanço e contas anuais das sociedades, no prazo de 90 dias após a respectiva aprovação em Assembleia Geral (artigo 246).

Considerações Finais As alterações supra já se encontram em vigor e enquadram-se no objectivo do Governo de simplificação e desburocratização do processo de constituição e funcionamento das sociedades comerciais, permitindo ao País um melhor posicionamento no ranking do Doing Business. A eliminação de determinados procedimentos

inerentes ao reconhecimento de assinaturas vai, sem dúvida, tornar mais célere e simples o processo de constituição de sociedades e de legalização das actas e das cartas mandadeiras, permitindo às sociedades comerciais uma maior flexibilidade no processo de tomada e implementação de decisões. É de louvar a iniciativa de maior protecção dos direitos dos sócios minoritários e de detalhe das obrigações dos Administradores, que, aliados à obrigação de depósito das contas anuais, impõem maior transparência na vida das sociedades comerciais.

Commercial Code of Mozambique

What has changed with the enforcement of Decree-Law No. 1/2018 of 4 May? General notes: Decree-Law no. 1/2018 was recently published, which entered into force immediately, and amended the Commercial Code, with the purpose of simplifying the process of setting up and operating commercial companies, protecting the minority partner and ensuring transparency regarding accounts. We present in this article a summary of the main changes. 1. Process of Incorporation of Commercial Companies • Removal of the imposition of face-to-face recognition of the members' signature, which is made by similarity (article 90); • Definition of the registered office in the private domicile of one of the partners, if the company's registered office cannot be defined concretely (article 94); • Clarity regarding the realization of capital in cash, in kind or both (Article 112); • Publication of the articles of incorporation in the National Gazette by a simplified summary , which must contain the specific elements of article 247; • Possibility of obtaining, by any interested party, a full copy of the articles of association of any commercial company with the Registry of Legal Entities (Article 247) . 2. Partners’ Rights • Article 105 introduces special membership rights, which may be conferred on any partner, regardless of the amount of the share capital held; • Such special rights may not be suppressed, restricted or modified without the consent of the holder given at a General Meeting, unless there is abusive use of them or violation of the respective duties by the titular partner; • The conditions of access of the members to the minutes of the General Assembly (free access) and of the Board of Directors (with prior authorization) are established. 3. General Meeting The new wording of article 130 gives members the widest right of representation at the General Meeting, namely, by family member (spouse, descendant or ascendant), by another partner, 52 - Junho/June 2018• REVISTA XONGUILA © ™ Ed. 3

by administrator, by third party or by proxy, a simple letter signed by the partner, without any other formality, addressed to the Chairman of the Board of the General Meeting. The minutes of the General Meeting may be drawn up in a separate document, simply containing the signature of the members. 4. Duties of Directors Article 150 clarifies the duties of directors, expressly prohibiting them from entering into contracts with the company, obtaining guarantees from the company, receiving advances of more than one month of monthly remuneration, receiving from third parties any personal advantage due to the exercise of the position, among others. 5. Annual Balance Sheet and Accounts The deposit at the Registry of Legal Entities of the balance sheet and annual accounts of the companies is required within 90 days after their approval at the General Meeting (Article 246). It shall be incumbent upon any interested party, in writing, to request (the company or the Registry of Legal Entities) the disclosure of the balance sheet and annual accounts of the companies. Final considerations The changes above are already in force and fall within the objective of the Government of simplification and de-bureaucratisation of the process of establishment and operation of commercial companies, allowing the country to a better position in the ranking of Doing Business. The elimination of certain procedures inherent in the recognition of signatures will undoubtedly speed up and simplify the process of incorporating companies and legalizing the minutes and letters of order, allowing commercial companies greater flexibility in the process of making and implementing decisions. KIKA MATERULA

DIRECTORA ARTÍSTICA DO PROJECTO XIQUITSI Como surgiu o teu interesse pela música clássica? Na verdade não foi o interesse que surgiu primeiro, foi uma necessidade dos meus pais, neste caso, da minha mãe, porque o meu pai na altura trabalhava na África do Sul. Eu tinha 7 anos, e a minha mãe tinha 4 filhos para criar, pelo que tinha de trabalhar muito. Ela não queria que os filhos ficassem em casa depois das aulas sem fazer nada, e então colocou cada um deles numa actividade, sendo que eu fui para a Escola Nacional de Música. E, sim, depois disso o interesse pela música apareceu. Algum tempo depois, ao abrigo de um protocolo com a Escola Profissional de Música de Évora, em Portugal, fomos seleccionados 6 alunos para ir estudar naquela instituição. Foi aí que comecei a estudar oboé, em 1995. Quando eras mais jovem, havia alguma “Kika Materula” que se empenhasse em desenvolver a música clássica moçambicana e em fazer chegar os seus músicos além-fronteiras? A minha “Kika Materula” foi a minha mãe, que continua a ser um dos maiores da minha vida. Foi ela que sempre me incentivou e, mesmo estando longe, foi quem sempre esteve mais perto durante os 20 anos em que estive a estudar em Portugal, e posteriormente na Suécia. Se eu pudesse responsabilizar alguém por aquilo que eu sou hoje, sem dúvida que seria a minha mãe. O que sentes ao ver muitas crianças realizarem os seus sonhos, o que sem o teu apoio não seria possível? Sem dúvida que o meu apoio tem sido fundamental, mas sinto necessidade de esmiuçar esta pergunta. Eu só consigo trabalhar porque existe muita gente por detrás de mim. Há uma série de patrocinadores, empresas e instituições que acreditam na Kulungwana, que, por sua vez, acredita em mim e no meu trabalho e que nos tem apoiado e suportado. Eu gostava que ficasse muito claro para todos que eu não faço isto sozinha. Como eu me sinto? Honestamente, eu não consigo descrever... Eu fui mãe recentemente, e é uma emoção indiscritível, é-me difícil descrever essa sensação. Outro sentimento que eu não consigo descrever é este de estar a fazer primeiras coisas na vida de um país. Cada vez que o Xiquitsi inova em algum passo – como na área da composição, compondo músicas novas, ou colocando alunos nossos pelo mundo fora através da música e a levar o nome de Moçambique além-fronteiras –, e cada vez que um menino pega num instrumento e o vejo em cima

de um palco a fazer um concerto, isto tem um valor tão grande que não consigo medir... Não consigo explicar a emoção. Mas que me sinto muito orgulhosa e feliz, sem dúvida que sim. Como vês o panorama da música clássica no país? Nós começámos por plantar uma semente, e essa semente começa a dar os seus frutos, mas ainda tem muitos frutos para dar e precisamos de muitos mais “agricultores” bem formados, que saibam o que estão a fazer com as mais variadas metodologias de ensino. Acredito que ainda existem muitos passos para dar e que, felizmente, estamos no caminho certo, porque também há algumas pessoas a trabalhar neste sentido. Há muito ainda por fazer. Nós ainda não temos uma orquestra oficial estatal, não temos ainda nenhum apoio estatal que mantenha as pessoas nesta área com uma qualidade a nível internacional, mas penso que estamos a caminhar nessa direcção. Como surgiu o projecto Xiquitsi e como explicas a necessidade de criar esse projecto? Em 2005 a Associação Kulungwana fundou e criou o Festival Internacional de Música Clássica de Maputo e eu fui convidada a participar em vários concertos desse festival ao longo destes anos. Em 2012, a direcção artística do festival saiu e eu fui convidada a dar-lhe continuidade. Na altura eu estava, e continuo, a trabalhar na Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto, na Casa da Música, e achei que era um esforço muito grande envolver-me num projecto em Moçambique apenas para desempenhar o papel que qualquer bom músico pode fazer, bastando para isso ter conhecimentos para convidar músicos para vir a Moçambique para tocar nos concertos, tal como já vinha acontecendo e muito bem. Achei então que não merecia tanto esforço, até porque na altura eu tinha outras responsabilidades, estava também a trabalhar no Brasil. Portanto, eu disse à Associação Kulungwana que aceitaria o cargo se o festival tivesse uma componente formativa, e, aí sim, já faria sentido para mim mudar um pouco a minha vida e ter um pé em Moçambique e outro em Portugal. Felizmente a minha proposta foi aceite e, portanto, o festival que acontecia uma vez por ano, todos anos desde de 2005, passou a acontecer três semanas por ano. Todos os músicos que vêm para a agora chamada Temporada de Música Clássica de Maputo dão aulas aos nossos alunos. Isto assim já faz muito sentido porque os patrocinadores estão verdadeiramente a investir no meu país.

O projecto Xiquitsi celebra 5 anos de vida. Quais foram as tuas grandes vitórias e quais são os teus grandes desafios para o futuro? Vitórias... Eu confesso que tenho vitórias todos os dias. O simples facto de chegar a um teatro e ver quase duzentos meninos a tocar um instrumento é talvez a maior vitória que nós possamos ter. Mas, ainda assim, eu posso dizer que o Xiquitsi hoje tem três orquestras; tem dois coros; temos hoje compositores a fazerem música; temos neste momento um grupo de alunos que saíram do Xiquitsi e estão a participar num festival de coros que está agora a decorrer; temos vários meninos a fazerem os seus próprios grupos de câmara e a cantar em casamentos e outras celebrações, ganhando assim o seu próprio dinheiro através dos ensinamentos que receberam no Xiquitsi; o próprio Xiquitsi participa em vários eventos da sociedade e somos convidados a participar nas celebrações dos dias nacionais de muitos países com representação diplomática em Moçambique; duas alunas nossas foram seleccionadas para um estágio numa orquestra na Coreia através de uma prova mundial... São tantas as vitórias! Mas eu prefiro dizer que a maior vitória é ter estes jovens e crianças motivados e com esperança no futuro. Desafios! São muitos e têm sido muitos também. Eu creio que já fizemos muita coisa. Moçambique, infelizmente, não tem uma sala de concertos preparada para concertos de música clássica, não temos instalações adequadas ao tipo de música que nós fazemos, não temos ainda uma orquestra sinfónica, mas vamos ter, estamos a trabalhar para isso. Portanto, há desafios? Há! Há obstáculos? Sim, também os há, mas com certeza vamos ultrapassá-los, e por isso e para isso é que nós estamos a trabalhar. Em Novembro passado os jovens xiquitsianos puderam partilhar o mesmo palco com esse marco emblemático da música popular moçambicana que é Stewart Sukuma. É difícil falar disso sem falar do grande ser humano que é o Stewart. Pude conhecê-lo ainda melhor ao longo de todo o ano passado porque foi um trabalho que demorou ainda tempo a preparar. Eu encontrei um grande ser humano, um grande músico, e uma pessoa que eu não sabia, ou não imaginava, que tivesse a humildade que ele tem. Isto foram as bases fundamentais para trabalharmos e para conseguirmos chegar ao final deste nosso trabalho. Os nossos alunos naturalmente estavam em êxtase total porque puderam trabalhar com o Stewart com a abertura que foi e com a sua proximidade. Mais do que tudo, eu acho que foi uma grande troca de experiências. São dois mundos muito diferentes, e eu, pessoalmente, aprendi muito. Eu, enquanto profissional de música e enquanto artista, estou a crescer todos os dias, e é esta mensagem que eu passo aos meus alunos. Nós não sabemos tudo, estamos a aprender diariamente e cada oportunidade é um ensinamento, e aquela foi mais um. Como directora artística, como foi o desafio de criar esta simbiose entre a música clássica e a música popular? Posso dizer que o elemento principal foi, e tem sido, e é sempre a disposição das pessoas e a sua abertura. Não podia ter sido mais fácil fazer esta simbiose com o Stewart, na medida em que ele esteve 1000% aberto, a trabalhar, a ouvir, a trocar ideias, a discutirmos (no bom sentido) para alcançarmos um bom resultado, e esta é para mim a parte boa de ser directora artística, é a parte da criação musical e fazer as coisas acontecer e no final vermos o resultado. Não quero assumir categoricamente que foi um desafio. Eu tinha os elementos certos para fazê-lo, os músicos, o Stewart, o Xiquitsi, os professores do Xiquitsi, que também me ajudam neste trabalho. Foi toda uma equipa a funcionar em pleno, e o resultado foi o que foi. Eu quero honestamente repetir este projecto porque foi simplesmente maravilhoso fazê-lo. Qual a importância de trazer artistas de renome

internacional até Maputo e qual a tua influência sobre os alunos do Xiquitsi? Eu acredito que tive o sucesso que tive devido a todo o ambiente que tive à minha volta, devido a todos os músicos a quem tive acesso, devido a todas as master classes a que assisti com músicos do melhor que havia. Eu acredito que isto é o elemento fundamental para o sucesso na formação de um indivíduo, daí que eu só acredite no sucesso do Xiquitsi e dos seus alunos se lhes der acesso também a estas figuras incontornáveis da música clássica e, por isso, unimos esforços diariamente para que assim continue a ser. Recebeste a Medalha de Mérito das mãos do Presidente da República Portuguesa. Que sentimento te invadiu nesse momento? Confesso que foi com profunda emoção. Em primeiro lugar, foi uma surpresa muito grande. Eu sou muito jovem e comecei este trabalho em Moçambique cinco anos atrás. Estou consciente do sucesso e da importância do trabalho que estamos a desenvolver. Como já disse, há muito mais para fazer e eu quero fazer parte dessa história, daí que tenha também sido uma grande motivação. Foi motivo para dizer que estamos no caminho certo, vamos continuar a fazer e a mostrar aos meus alunos que o nosso trabalho é reconhecido não só aqui mas também além fronteiras, e foi motivo para o Presidente da República Portuguesa vir a Moçambique demonstrar esse reconhecimento do nosso esforço. Foi extremamente importante e vai ficar marcado para toda a minha vida e toda a minha carreira. Agora, e sendo genuinamente sincera, por momentos pensei em estar à espera do próximo reconhecimento por parte das nossas autoridades. Era muito importante para todo o Xiquitsi que isso acontecesse.

cançar? Quais os teus outros projectos paralelos? Há tanta coisa ainda para fazer! Eu, desde pequenina, fui sempre incansável e fui sempre uma pessoa que quis desafios, e o facto de ter saído do meu país aos treze anos para estudar música lá fora foi a demonstração para muita gente de um acto de grande coragem, tanto para mim como para a minha família. Há muita coisa que quero alcançar, principalmente em relação ao desenvolvimento da música em Moçambique. Por exemplo: a construção de salas apropriadas a este tipo de música, com dignidade não só para aqueles que estão no palco mas também para aqueles que estão na plateia a assistir. Precisamos de salas bem montadas, espaços para que as pessoas possam ir ver um concerto e possam depois querer ir a uma casa de banho e encontrá-la em condições normais e dignas. Gostava muito que este país tivesse uma orquestra sinfónica subsidiada pelo estado; gostava que tivesse uma orquestra juvenil subsidiada e apoiada pelas entidades governamentais, como acontece nos países europeus e na vizinha África do Sul. Gostava de ver cada cidade e cada província deste país com acesso a ensino de qualidade de música. Há tanta coisa ainda por fazer... Espero ainda estar viva para fazer metade delas, se não, espero que apareça alguém com energia e coragem para poder fazê-lo. Que apoios são necessários para que surjam no futuro outras “Kika Materula”? São precisos vários apoios, os que existem neste momento e ainda mais. Mais que tudo apoios financeiros neste momento. O Xiquitsi abrange uma série de áreas formativas, e uma delas é a formação de formadores. Já temos, inclusive, gente capacitada para abrir um pólo numa outra cidade, mas não temos condições financeiras para tal. Requer instrumentos, salários, viagens... Precisamos destes apoios financeiros, governamentais ou não, porque o know-how existe felizmente.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE XIQUITSI PROJECT How did your interest in classical music come about? It was not the interest that came first but my parents’ need, in this case, my mother, because my father was working at the time in South Africa. I was 7 years old, and my mother had 4 children to raise, so I had to work hard. She did not want her children to stay home after school without doing anything, so she enrolled each of us in afterschool activities, and I went to the National School of Music. And, yes, after that the interest for the music was awakened. Sometime later, under a protocol with the Vocational School of Music of Évora, in Portugal, 6 students including me were selected to go study in there. That's where I started studying oboe in 1995.

wana, who in turn believe in me and my work, who has supported us. I would like to clarify that I do not do this alone. How I feel? Honestly, I cannot describe it... I was a mother recently, and it is an indescribable feeling, it is difficult for me to describe it. Another feeling I cannot describe is this of doing the first things in a country's life. Every time Xiquitsi innovates in some way - in composition for instance, composing new songs, or putting our students around the world through music and taking Mozambique across borders - and every time a boy picks up an instrument and I see him on stage in concert, it is so magnificent that I cannot measure it ... I cannot explain the emotion. But undoubtedly, I feel very proud and happy.

When you were younger, was there a "Kika Materula" striving to develop Mozambican classical music and to take its musicians across borders? My " Kika Materula " was my mother, who continues to be one of the greatest in my life. It was her who always encouraged me and even from far, she was the one who was always the closest during the 20 years I studied in Portugal, and later in Sweden. Without a doubt I am who I am today because of my mother.

How do you see the panorama of classical music in the country? We started by planting a seed, and that seed begins to bear fruit, but still has much fruit to give and we need more well trained "farmers", they know what they are doing with the most varied teaching methodologies. I believe that there are still many steps to take and fortunately we are on the right track, because there are also some people working in this direction. There is much to be done. We still do not have an official state orchestra, we do not have any state support to keep people in this area with international quality standards, but I think we are moving in that direction.

What you feel when you see many children fulfilling their dreams, knowing that without your support it would not be possible? I have no doubt that my support has been fundamental, but I feel it necessary to scrutinize this question. I can only work because there are a lot of people behind me. There are a number of sponsors, companies and institutions who believe in Kulung-

How did the Xiquitsi project begin and what is the need for it? In 2005 the Kulungwana Association founded and created the International Classical Music Festival in Maputo and I was

invited to participate in several concerts in the festival over the years. In 2012, the artistic director of the festival left, and I was invited to give it continuity. At the time I was, and continue, to work in the Symphony Orchestra of Porto, the Casa da Música, and thought it was a great effort to get involved in a project in Mozambique only to play the role that any good musician does which is to know and invite musicians to come to Mozambique to play at the concerts, as it was already happening and very well. I thought that it would not take much effort from my part, because at the time I had other responsibilities, I was also working in Brazil. So, I told the Association Kulungwana would accept the position if the festival had a training component so yes, it made sense for me to change a little bit my life and have one foot in Mozambique and one in Portugal. Fortunately, my proposal was accepted, and the festival has happened once a year, every year since 2005, it is three weeks long. All the musicians who come to the

Maputo Classical Music Season give lessons to our students. This already makes a lot of sense because the sponsors are truly investing in my country. The Xiquitsi project celebrates 5 years. What were your greatest victories and major challenges for the future? Victories ... I confess I have victories every day. The mere fact of arriving at a theatre and seeing almost two hundred children playing an instrument is perhaps the greatest victory we can have. But still, I can say that the Xiquitsi today has three orchestras; has two choirs; we have composers today making music; we have at the moment a group of students who left the Xiquitsi and are participating in a choir festival that is now taking place; we have several students making their own chamber groups and singing at weddings and other celebrations, thus earning their own money through the teachings they received at Xiquitsi; the very Xiquitsi participates in various social events and we are invited to partici-

pate in national day celebrations of many countries with diplomatic representation in Mozambique; two of our students were selected for an internship in an orchestra in Korea through a world competition ... There are so many victories! But I prefer to say that the greatest victory is to have these young people and children motivated with hope for the future. Challenges! There are many. I think we've done a lot already. Mozambique, unfortunately, does not have a concert hall prepared for classical music concerts, we do not have facilities suitable for the kind of music we make, we do not even have a symphony orchestra, but we will, we are working towards this. So are there challenges? Yes, there are! Are there obstacles? Yes, there are, but we're sure we will overcome them, and that's what we are working for.

tor, how was the task of creating this symbiosis between classical music and popular music? I can say that the main element was, and has been, and always is the disposition of people and their openness. It could not have been easier to make this symbiosis with Stewart, to the extent that he was 1000% open to work, to listen, to exchange ideas, to discuss, to achieve a good result, and this is for me the good part of being artistic director, is the part of musical creation, making things happen and in the end see the result. I do not want to categorically assume that it was a challenge. And u had the right elements to make it, the musicians, Stewart, the Xiquitsi, the teachers Xiquitsi, which also helped me in this work, it was all a team effort and the result was what it was. I honestly want to repeat this project because it was simply wonderful to do it.

Last November young Xiquitsians were able to share the same stage with Stewart Sukuma, a Mozambican popular music icon. Tell us about that experience. It is difficult to talk about this without mentioning the great human being that is Stewart. I got to know him better last year because it was a project that took some time to prepare. I met a great human being, a great musician, and a person I did not know, or did not imagine, with great humility. This was the fundamental basis for us to work together and for us to be able to finalize the project. Our students naturally, were in total bliss because they were able to work with Stewart openness and closeness. Most of all, I think it was a great exchange of experiences. There are two very different worlds, and personally I learnt a lot. Me, as a professional musician and as an artist, I am growing every day, and it is this message that I pass to my students. We do not know everything, we are learning daily and every opportunity is a lesson, and that was another one. As an artistic direc-

What is the importance of bringing internationally renowned artists to Maputo and what is your influence on students Xiquitsi? I believe I have had the success I had because of the environment I was in, because of all the musicians who had access to due to all the master classes to which attended with best musicians. I believe that this is the fundamental element for success in the formation of an individual, so I only believe that the success of Xiquitsi and his students depends on giving them access to these essential figures of classical music and we join efforts daily so that it is so.

You have received the Medal of Merit from the Portuguese President. What did you feel in that very moment? I confess it was deep emotion. Firstly, it was a very big surprise. I am very young and started this work in Mozambique five years ago. I am aware of the success and importance of the work we are doing. As I said, there is much more to do and I want to be part of this story, that was a great motivation. It was a reason to say that we are on the right track, we will continue to do and the to show my students that our work

is recognized not only here but also across borders, and it was a reason for the President of Portugal to come to Mozambique to demonstrate this recognition of our efforts. It was extremely important and will stay marked for my entire life and my entire career. Now, and being genuinely sincere, for a moment I thought about waiting for the next recognition from our authorities. It was very important for all Xiquitsi if this happened.

every city and every province of the country with access to quality music education. There is so much to be done ... I still hope to be alive to do half of it, if not, I hope someone will appear with the energy and courage to do it. What support is needed for more " Kika Materula "? It takes several types of support, what exists at the moment and more. Most importantly financial support. The Xiquitsi covers a range of training areas, and one of them is the training of trainers. We already have capacitated people to open a pole in another city, but we cannot afford to do so. It requires instruments, salaries, travel ... We need financial support, governmental or not, because the know-how luckily already exists.

You have an enviable curriculum, what do you still wish to achieve? What are your other parallel projects? There is so much to do! Since I was little I was always restless, I’ve always been a person who wanted challenges, and the fact that I left my country at thirteen to study music out there

showed many people an act of great courage, both for me and for my family. I have much that I want to achieve, especially in relation to the development of music in Mozambique. For example: the construction of rooms appropriate to this type of music, with dignity not only for those who are onstage but also for those in the audience to watch. We need well-set rooms, spaces so that people can go to see a concert and may later want to go to a bathroom and find it in normal and dignified conditions. I really wanted this country to have a symphonic orchestra subsidized by the state; I would like to have a youth orchestra subsidized and supported by government entities, as is the case in European countries and in neighbouring South Africa. I would like to see

onta do Ouro is one of the most sought-after beaches in the country. It is located in the southern tip of Mozambique, in Maputo Province, Matutuíne District, Administrative Post of Zitundo, bordering the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Nampula • Localiza-se no nordeste de Moçambique. • Faz fronteira, a norte, através do rio Lúrio, com as províncias de Cabo Delgado e Niassa. A sudoeste separa-a da Zambézia o rio Ligonha, e, a este, encontra-se com o Oceano Índico. • A sua capital é a cidade de Nampula, localizada cerca de 2.150 km a norte da cidade de Maputo. • Com uma área de 81 606 km² e uma população de 6 102 867 habitantes em 2017, é a província que mais distritos possui, 23 no total. Desde 2013 que tem 7 municípios: Angoche, Ilha de Moçambique, Malema, Monapo, Nacala Porto, Nampula e Ribaué. • Os Macuas são a etnia mais representativa. • Nesta província predomina um clima tropical húmido com temperaturas médias anuais a rondar os 24 a 26 graus. • É a província com mais cidades do país, quatro no total, nomeadamente, Ilha de Moçambique, Nampula, Nacala e Angoche. • Dispõe de um enorme potencial turístico em todo o seu litoral. Foi aqui que nasceu o nome do país, no local onde atracaram os primeiros comerciantes (árabes e portugueses), a ilha de Moçambique, considerada hoje património mundial da humanidade. • As principais produções da província são caju, sisal, algodão, tabaco, copra, milho, amendoim e arroz. Quanto a minerais, tem ouro, ferro, quartzo, pedras preciosas e semipreciosas. • Dotada de grande e variada beleza, a província de Nampula é também um poço de cultura e história de riqueza inestimável, graças a um rico cruzamento de povos com diferentes línguas, hábitos e crenças. • O secular trabalho de arte em pau-preto é um autêntico símbolo artístico desta região. Destaca-se também o arte sanato utilitário de palha, o mobiliário em madeira trabalhada e rendilhada, com influências árabes, portuguesas e até mesmo chinesas. • A província de Nampula é tradicionalmente conhecida como a terra das “muthiana orera” o que quer dizer meni nas bonitas. As mulheres distinguem-se pelo uso de capulanas de cores vivas, pelas formas laboriosas de amarrar o lenço que usam na cabeça e por desde tenra idade tratarem da pele com um pó natural extraído de uma árvore, o m’siro (ou mussiro), com que fazem uma máscara. Also worthy of mention is the straw handi crafts, the furniture made of worked and laced wood, with Arabic, Portuguese and even Chinese influences. • The province of Nampula is traditionally known as the land of the “Muthiana Orera”, beautiful girls. Women wrap themselves in vibrant capulanas, their laborious ways to tie their head scarfs, from an early age they treat the skin with a natural extracted powder from a tree, m'siro (or Mussiro) with which they make a mask. The tuff dance or the socalled dance of the rope, practiced exclusively by women, are good postcards of femininity.

O PIRIPIRI SACANA Os piripiris são originários da américa latina, da zona do México para cima, onde são conhecidos por chili pepper. Os navegadores portugueses, através da rota das especiarias, levaram-nos para África, Europa, Ásia e resto do mundo, embora inicialmente não tenham sido muito apreciados na Europa. A palavra piripiri, com este significado, existe somente em português. Nos países anglófonos é “pepper” e “chili” é a designação dos hispânicos. Diz-se que a palavra piripiri provavelmente surgiu de uma derivação do suaíli, falado na África oriental. Em suaíli, “pilipili” significa pimenta preta. Diz-se que, em tempos, um agricultor português que vivia na província de Inhambane tinha uma grande plantação de frutos e legumes. Dedicava-se à enxertia, que tentou também com piripiris. Após sucessivos cruzamentos ao longo de várias gerações, deu-se uma mutação do código genético, qye deu origem a uma nova e única espécie no mundo. Por ser muito picante, esse piripiri ganhou a conotação de agressivo e tramado ao paladar, sendo apelidado de “sacana”. Esta espécie, o piripiri sacana, não tem mais de 1 cm de tamanho, e é de ardência muito potente e finíssimo aroma. Hoje é uma marca de referência de Moçambique e apreciado pelo mundo fora. Existem no entanto, piripiris mais picantes que o sacana, como, por exemplo, o habanero. A palavra sacana é de origem incerta. Uma das hipóteses que se coloca é a de ser de origem japonesa. Em japonês quer dizer peixe. Conta a lenda que os navegadores portugueses, quando pararam na baía nipónica, viram pescadores dentro da água a apanhar peixes com as mãos. Muitas vezes os peixes escapavam-se-lhes. Começaram então a chamar “sacana” a uma pessoa malandra que escapava impunemente de alguma situação. Outra origem possível da palavra sacana é atribuída ao quicongo, língua bantu em que "sàkana" significa "brincar e divertir-se". A propósito, sabias que a parte picante do piripiri são as sementes?

THE SACANA PIRIPIRI Chilies are originally from Latin America, from Mexico northwards, where they are known as chili pepper. The Portuguese navigators, through the spice route, took them to Africa, Europe, Asia and the rest of the world. Although, initially they were not much appreciated in Europe. The word piripiri, meaning chilies, only exists in Portuguese. In Anglophone countries it is "Pepper" and Hispanic countries it is known as "chili". It is said that the word piri piri probably came from a derivation of Swahili, spoken in East Africa. In Swahili, " Pilipili " means black pepper. It is said that, at the time, a Portuguese farmer who lived in the province of Inhambane had a large plantation of fruits and vegetables. He was known for grafting plants, a technique he also used for piripiris. After successive crosses over several generations, there has been a mutation of the genetic code, qye which gave rise to a new and unique species in the world. For being too spicy, this chili won the connotation of aggressive and harsh on the palate, being dubbed "sacana" (bastard). This species, piripiri sacana, is no bigger than 1 cm, it has a very powerful burn and an exquisite aroma. Today it is a Mozambican icon and appreciated by the outside world. There are, however, piripiris more spicy than the “sacana”, such as the habanero. The origin of the word “sacana” is unclear. One theory is that it is of Japanese origin. In Japanese it means fish. Legend has it that when the Portuguese explorers docked in a Japanese bay, saw fishermen in the water catch fish by hand. Often the fish escaped. That is why you call a naughty person who escaped with impunity in any situation a “sacana”. Another possible source of the word “sacana” is attributed to quicongo, bantu language in which "sàkana" means "to play and have fun". By the way, did you know that the spicy part of piripiri is the seeds?

Como fazer o seu próprio projecto de Interior Design?

uito embora, nos dias que correm, seja muito comum as pessoas recorrerem a um profissional para decorar as suas casas, há ainda muitos casos em que o preferem fazer por sua conta e risco. É claro que o podem fazer e que o farão bem! Contudo, é preciso ter em conta alguns aspectos fundamentais antes de iniciar esse processo. Se é uma dessas pessoas, aqui ficam algumas dicas para planear o ambiente da sua casa e torná-lo mais funcional e harmonioso. Em primeiro lugar, deve estudar a dinâmica da divisão que pre-

tende alterar para que a mesma cumpra o seu papel, ou seja, nunca deve perder de vista a sua funcionalidade. Depois tem que escolher o tipo de móveis e o seu enquadramento no cenário projectado. Decidir se os móveis devem ser altos ou baixos, se deve optar por sofás ou cadeirões e a sua disposição no espaço. Trata-se de fazer a distribuição cénica. Se tiver dúvidas, coloque fita adesiva no chão para o/a ajudar a perspectivar melhor o cenário. Por fim vem a decoração do espaço. A escolha de móveis e objectos decorativos como cor-

tinas, tapetes, mesas, cadeiras, candeeiros, vasos, entre outras peças, que tornam o ambiente mais acolhedor e personalizado. Nesta fase, a escolha de cores e dos revestimentos das paredes é fundamental, podendo, por exemplo, optar pelo papel de parede para reforçar um detalhe ou lhe dar um toque ainda mais pessoal. Atenção que esta receita deve ser feita esporadicamente, somente para matar aquele gostinho pelo doce, desta forma, não a faça com regularidade! Hoje trago-vos um bolo de chocolate, com um toque especial muito apreciado em Moçambique, e que é também óptimo para acelerar o metabolismo: o piripiri!

Bolo de chocolate picante Ingredientes:

200 g de chocolate em barra de culinária sem açúcar 100 g de óleo de coco 6 ovos 1 colher de sopa de caju bem moído 1 colher de chá de cacau sem açúcar 1 colher de chá de fermento sem alumínio e sem glúten • Uma pitada de pimenta Cayenne ou piripiri em pó • Chocolate sem açúcar derretido e frutos vermelhos para decorar (opcional) • • • • • •

Modo de preparação: Pré-aqueça o forno a 180 graus. Derreta o chocolate no óleo de coco. De seguida, junte um ovo de cada vez, batendo sempre muito bem; adicione o caju, o cacau, o fermento e o picante e deite este preparado numa forma de silicone previamente untada com Spray antiaderente. I have warned of the need, under specific technical supervision, that the movements that make up the exercises are to be carried out at maximum amplitude, avoiding joint discomfort. Thus, within the margin of safety, every movement will have a radius which, when repeated methodologically, create adaptations we want: results! In this way, you are already stimulating the extensibility of your muscles (the ability they have to stretch). Elasticity is the muscle property that gives it the ability to return to its normal size after stretching. This process, during

training, occurs cyclically and repetitively, according to the prescription of the professional. In addition, muscle stiffness grows - phenomenon is due to the increase in blood viscosity, due to the gradual increase of muscle fatigue. In line with this, in the end of your structured exercise session, it is essential to stretch, especially the most affected muscles: helping mobility gains, essential to maintain a correct posture throughout the training planning. Always keep in mind that a good posture is a great indicator of a healthy body, symmetrical, so more efficient. And for this you must learn to stretch the main muscle groups at the end of your exercise set! Good training!

fter being surprised by our followers with wonderful photographs of the previous publication's recipe, I thought of bringing you something a little easier to prepare and that serves as an incentive to continue the change in your lifestyle!

Spicy Chocolate Cake Ingredients:

200 g sugar-free cooking chocolate 100 g coconut oil 6 eggs 1 tablespoon of well-ground cashew 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa 1 teaspoon baking powder without aluminium and gluten free • A pinch of Cayenne pepper or chilli powder • Melted sugar-free chocolate and red fruits to decorate (optional) • • • • • •

Please note that this recipe should be made sporadically, only to satisfy that sweet tooth, so do not do it regularly! Today I bring you a chocolate cake, with a special Mozambican touch, and that is also great to accelerate the metabolism. Chocolate cake spiced with piripiri!

Method of preparation: Pre-heat the oven at 180 °. Melt chocolate in coconut oil. Then add one egg at a time, always beating very well; add the cashew nuts, the cocoa, the baking powder and the spice. Pour the mixture into a silicone baking tin previously greased with nonstick Spray. Bake for 20 minutes. You'll think it is not ready yet as it is still soft but be patient and let it cool and watch the magic happen! A moist and delicious cake that melts in your mouth! See you later! Mafalda Henriques
