ACADEMIC WORKS

Oliver Winery Cellar

Green Links & Gravity Flow Winery

Bloomington, IN, US.

Honorable Mention for UIUC 2021 Spring Earl Prize and Graduate Alumni Awards

In order to show the respect of the site, this proposal aims to create green links to connect the 3 main elements on site, which are existing winery facilities, the lake on the North and the new winery building. Visitors are introduced to the new oliver winey cellar building with the leading of green links, which are also extend into the building and showcase the green house with climate control system to the public.

Tucked into the hillside, the new oliver winery cellar introduces a parallel between the topography of the land and the gravity-flow winemaking process taking place inside. The visitor area will lead to the lower level for the production workshop, or to the upper level green roof, offering sweeping views of the scenes nearby.

Above Ground Level Plan

Main Level Plan

Sustainability & Gravity Flow

The process in gravity

wine-making (also known as gravity fed), allows for the wine to stream from winery levels. Unlike traditional one-level cellars there is no use of pumps or mechanical force, enabling the wine to gently extract

Green Roof

Enclosure Detail

According to ICEE, climate zone 5 requires at least 30 ci R-Value. Based on this requirement, we designed to have limestone cladding wall assembly which leads to a higher R-Value, 48.73 ci, with the overall thickness 13.555 in.

Totl Thickness: 13.555in

R-Value: 48.73 h ft2 °F/Btu

U-Value: 0.02 Btu/h ft2 °F

Heating & Humidification + Internal Heat Gain.

For passive solar heating face most of the glass area south to maximize winter sun expo-sure, and design overhangs to fully shade in summer. Provide double pane high perfor-mance glazing (Low-E) on west, north and east, but clear on south for maximize passive solar gain.

Allerton Pavilion

Observation for Changing Natures Monticello, IL, US.

The program for this design studio will be a pavilion that will serve as an Observatory for Changing Natures, which aims to augment the experience of visitors to the Allerton grounds.

Starting from a two hundred-page research publication, to a synthesis of projects and detail development, the iterative process led us to the development of 3 Nature Boxes which celebrates the moments that make Allerton Park special.

The full-scale structures were constructed in 6 weeks with the teamwork of all 11 students in studio.

Personal Pavilion

To be located at the farm land area of Allerton Park & Retreat Center, Monticello IL, the personal pavilion aims to create architecture which let us see and experience nature in new ways, and it serves as a venue for a wide range of public activity programs: in addition to observatory, shelter and view point.

The pavilion is expected to:

• Respect the existing natural slope and highlight the view with natural slope,

• Different elevations lead to different views of the site,

• Force visitors to go through all the directions and arrive the major lake view at the end.

Plan

Initially situated deep in the woodlands, their adjacence to the ancient mounds led to minorly shift to a clearing next to a cliff overlooking the Sangamon river, the mounds and the natural vegetation. This site was next to a hiking trail, which allowed for high visibility of the pavilions as one treaded on the trails.

The iterative process led to the development of Nature Boxes- a set of three 650 cu.ft framed structures, which through their position, incline, elevation and enclosure system, frame distinct experiences for the visitors.

The Skybox celebrates the aerial view of the top of the tree set against the dramatic skies.

The Treehouse celebrates the sense of elevation from the ground, while the viewer looks at the trunk of the tree and the river in front.

The Portal provides a gateway to enter into the clearing, which essentially becomes a site of hightened contemplation.
