A
s my time as Xi Psi Phi Supreme Chapter President comes to an end I wanted to thank everyone for helping me achieve my goals for the fraternity and share some highlights of the last two years. I have particularly enjoyed meeting our future dentists as they always give me hope and confidence in the future of our amazing profession. I can honestly say the future is very bright. To our students and recent graduates, I would like to add that board members and alumni are always available to help you on your journey and we encourage you to contact us with any questions you may have. We have a fantastic board and alumni who are dedicated to your success and their advice will be of great value in your careers. My tenure turned out to have some unforeseen transitions. We sadly lost our Supreme Editor, Dr. Carl Sebelius. Carl was a great man and we had big shoes to fill. It was with great pleasure that Dr. Anne-Lise Fink accepted my nomination to the position. She is doing a tremendous job and continuing our color and digital Quarterly with her distinct work ethic and talent for publishing. Our next challenge will be to replace the virtually irreplaceable. Dr. Keith Dickey is stepping down as Supreme Secretary-Treasurer, after many years as the backbone of the fraternity, and we continue our daunting search for a capable replacement. We are thankful that he, and his wife Peg, will continue in the interim until a successor is found. Our college chapters continue to thrive and have some incredible events and charities. We are a growing

fraternity and I could not be more proud of the students. There are many alumni chapters that continue to flourish and I ask that we all continue to support them as well. We must also continue to pay our dues as this money has helped the fraternity remain in existence. It is the alumni dues that allow us to have the Supreme Assembly Dr. Fabio G. Apolito and allow students to meet, exchange ideas, and keep the young spirit of the ZIPS alive. In the end it is all about the students and helping them thrive. I thank all that have supported us so generously this past year, you are the reason for our success. I encourage you to ask your fellow ZIPS brothers and sisters to contribute as well. I would like to thank you all for the great honor of serving you as Supreme Chapter President. This is hardly a good-bye as I will continue to proudly serve as a board member and work tirelessly for the ideals and goals of the fraternity. The fraternity is now in the capable hands of Dr. Randy Gurrola and an incredibly strong board. We will continue to build on our success and keep Xi Psi Phi as the top dental fraternity. t is a great honor to follow in the footsteps of the most recent Supreme editors, Carl L. Sebelius, Sr., Leighton Weir, and Carl Sebelius, Jr. and my hope is to continue with our traditions of sharing our world wide friendships. This year marks the addition of a new chapter and increasing our membership by 289 new members for the school year 2017-2018. Let us continue this trend and build our sense of fellowship to include more members who will enjoy our friendship. It is with great pleasure for me to announce that my niece, Kelly Catherine Andersen, has been admitted to the UCLA Dental Class of 2022. I am so proud as this has been a lifelong ambition since she walked the “Kindergarden career parade” as a future dentist. With that being said, I hope and will support her to open a chapter in UCLA!!! I call upon all our members to continue to share news
and pictures by sending information to me. The only way this publication can be effective is by sharing our experiences and learning about what is happening in other parts of the country. Birth of a New Chapter
I
t was with great excitement that we welcome Beta Omicron into our fraternity as a new chapter representing Midwestern University at Downers Grove, Illinois. The Friendship Degree and Chapter Charter ceremony was held at Parker Restaurant on October 14, 2017. The ceremony was hosted by the Supreme Chapter and the new chapter was presented with their charter. 2017 ZIP DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD
Dr. Joseph Spalitto Chi’72 and 2015 Xi Psi Phi FRANKEL AWARD winner was honored and inducted as a Fellow of the ICD at the 88th Annual Convocation in Atlanta, GA, on October 19, 2017. For over ten years Dr. Spalitto and his wife, Liz, a dental hygienist, traveled to Guatemala to perform dental missionary work. He eventually became director of numerous dental and medical missions to that country and was made Honorary Consul of Guatemala for part of the midwest region and a member of the U.S. State Department. Dr. Spalitto knows and has compassion for the needy. There is a long list of recipients who have received his care, both here and abroad. One can say the world smiles a little brighter because of Spalitto’s many humanitarian efforts.

COLLEGE CHAPTER REPORTS
ALPHA CHAPTER University of Michigan Ann Arbor, MI Founded 1889
T
he 2018-2019 academic year has been full of adventures for the Alpha Chapter. The chapter helped the University of Michigan School of Dentistry welcome its newest class of dental students by hosting a summer BBQ and pool party complete with a volleyball tournament and yummy snacks. We always enjoy welcoming the new students to the school and helping introduce them to their new instructors and learning environment. This year we had a very successful lunch presentation to give helpful hints to the D1 class on how to manage the dental curriculum and where to find help within the school. In order to give back to the wonderful community of Ann Arbor, the chapter spent time volunteering with local organizations to clean up trails at a local park. Although it was incredibly hot, our members had a great time spending the day removing invasive species from the trail and helping to make the park easily navigable to hikers. The chapter hopes to return to the park for more events in the spring to enjoy the well groomed trails. With the start of the fall semester, the chapter grew in size with

the addition of members from the D1, D2, and D3 class. We were very excited to see so much interest in Xi Psi Phi and welcomed our new members graciously. Our annual initiation banquet was a blast and offered a great environment for our new members to get to know the chapter. Shortly after, the chapter teamed up with other organizations from our school to visit a local “Terrorfied Forest” for a fun night or thrills. Our members had a fantastic night exploring the haunted forest and drinking hot cider with fellow dental students. Prior to the end of the semester, the chapter came together for our

favorite event of the year. At this year’s Friendsgiving, members from all four dental classes came together to celebrate a wonderful year and reminisced. In the coming calendar year, the chapter plans to celebrate the graduation of our D4 members and help them transition into their new roles as dentist. The chapter also hopes to continue inspiring its members to strive for academic excellence and encourage everyone to work together to give back to the local community and to our patients. We can not wait to see what 2018 has in store for us and we look forward to continuing the relationships we have made through Xi Psi Phi. i Psi Phi Beta has hit the ground running this year with a slew of exciting rush month activities. On September 10, 2017, we began the semester with one of our signature laboratory tutorial events. More than forty D1 students attended the tutorial session where they were treated to individualized wax up assistance.

Thank you to Eric Cheung, Joey Yu, Marianne Sulistyo, Wong Kitling, Elizabeth Maas, Micaela RuppertMajer, and most of all, Alfred Ong for staffing the event! We built upon this momentum during NYU’s Annual Club Fair on September 13, 2017. Our Chapter President, Elizabeth Maas, and Vice President, Caitlin Cloutier, spent hours hand crafting shortbread bites and assorted cake balls (flavors: Nutella, cookie butter, pumpkin spice, and tiramisu). NYU College of
Dentistry students and faculty complimented us on our creativity and were excited to taste these scrumptious treats. On September 15, 2017, our Academic Chair, Jackie Glazman, organized our bi-annual D1 Success Panel. A handful of ZIPS D2s and D3s shared tips and tricks with D1s regarding how to succeed during Fall Semester. Our panelists, Jackie Glazman, Micaela Ruppert-Majer, Nams Sheth, Brenda Shah, and Ahmad Khawam discussed different

On November 4, 2017, a group of enthusiastic ZIPS members ventured to the Lower East Side Harm Reduction Center to give oral cancer screenings to interested members of the community. This event was followed by our annual D2 Success Panel on September 19, 2017, during which Jackie Glazman, Alfred Ong, and Nicole Liu gave advice regarding D2 courses. Additionally, ZIPS Beta ventured out to California Pizza Kitchen on September 8, 2017, where we enjoyed a delicious meal while raising funds for our Chapter. Thank you

University of Missouri, Kansas City Kansas City, Missouri Founded 1905 he Chi chapter of Xi Psi Phi had an amazing start to Fall 2017, beginning with an outstanding rush welcoming 43 new initiates into the Xi Psi Phi organization. The initiates were each paired up with a “Big” from the D2, D3, and D4 classes. This mentor program functions as a social, academic, and clinical support system. The so-called “families” support each other in the classroom, clinic, and compete against other families at social events. The new members had their family revealed to them at initiation this year.
Xi Psi Phi strives to maintain a balance between academic activities and social events. Every week, Xi Psi Phi hosts a help lab for D1 and D2 students, where older members give pre-clinical laboratory support and dinner is provided for all involved. Additionally, monthly happy hours are hosted which allows Zips to create bonds with members from all four graduating classes of Xi Psi Phi outside of the clinical atmosphere. The fall social events kicked off with the annual Tri-Frat party, which is hosted by all three dental fraternities at UMKC. Next came the Zips initiation and celebration. This formal event was held at the Diastole Scholars Center rights across the street from the dental school. The biggest event of the fall semester is the Halloween party, which is hosted each year by the Zips. This year’s edition was a hit as classmates from all years of the DDS and hygiene programs congregated at John’s Big Deck to celebrate the season. The semester concluded with our annual “Beermas” party. At this event, members bring some their favorite brews giftwrapped for everyone else to open as a surprise. t has been a very exciting and very busy fall semester for the Beta Mu chapter Zips at Southern Illinois University! We started off our new school year with a fun filled rush week. Our Talladega Nights themed party did not disappoint. This chapter welcomed the new first years at our tailgate party, where our fantastic

faculty helped serve up hamburgers, hotdogs and ice cold beverages. Dressed in our trashiest denim we continued with bags competitions and volleyball games and the music kept the party going all through the night. We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout. When rush week came to an end, we had 17 new members! We kept the ball rolling this semester with our Zip golf tournament. Luckily this year the weather was great and all the attendees could enjoy

hitting the green in the sunshine. Our Jello shot girls made sure our participants had tons of fun as they made their way through the course. After nine holes of healthy competition, we enjoyed hamburgers and hotdogs once again grilled up by our very own Dr. Dickey who was accompanied this year by Dr. Rawson. This day remains one of the best days of the year whether you’re shooting under par or going for highest score. We also continued our annual food drive this year. We hosted a happy

hour at one of our local hangouts and each attendee was given a free drink if they brought food to donate to a great cause. We had a fantastic attendance and not only had a fun time but we were also able to donate to our local food bank and give back to our community.
As Thanksgiving rolled around we found ourselves knee deep in mashed potatoes and turkey at our annual “Friendsgiving.” Every member brought a delicious dish to share and left that night stuffed! It was a great night with great people. Our chapter will be closing out a phenomenal semester with our
holiday party , which we are lucky enough to have hosted by Dr. Parmlee. Every year we ring in the holiday season with a delicious meal, craft beers and intense games of shuffle board at Dr. Parmlee’s amazing party barn. The Beta Mu chapter is looking forward to the fun events we have planned next semester!

he Iota chapter board members have been working hard to make 2017 a memorable year. This spring, our Farewell Dinner marked the transition of our senior ZIPs members into ZIPs alumni. The banquet was held on May 12th, at the Marines’ Memorial Club and Hotel by Union Square. It was complete with a fun photobooth, roaming photographers, and bittersweet speeches from the graduating members. Under the rare, San Franciscan summer sun, the new board created early hype for the fraternity among the incoming class with our new May Madness event filled with challenging mini-games in Golden Gate Park. In September, we invited the incoming

class for roasted s’mores at our successful bonfire event at Ocean Beach. Meanwhile, some of our members were all the way in Jamaica, volunteering their time and skillsets to help those without access to dental care.
With the power of both of our amazing and hardworking Rush Chairs, Michael Nguyen and Trung Nguyen, Iota Chapter was able to add over 45 new members this Fall. The November 17th Initiation Dinner was

he Alpha Omicron Chapter at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has already had an exciting fall this 2017-2018 school year, and look forward to seeing what the spring semester brings. The year began back in August with our Annual ZIPs Rush Week, in which we hosted three events to get to know the Class of 2021, and show them which fraternity remains the best here at UT College of Dentistry. The first of the events was a meet and greet at one of Memphis’s newest establishments, Railgarten, where members and potential new members hung out, played ping pong, and got to know one another. On Wednesday, we hosted our “Black and White” event at the Balinese Ballroom. The week was capped off with our main event, the Annual ZIPs Flip Cup Tournament on Friday. XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY
Dr. Stan Covington, Chapter Advisor, hosted the first part at his home. The Pledges attended and the chapter officers conducted the ceremony. A second party involving the entire chapter was held later that evening. Before leaving for the second party, the Chapter Officers reinforced the motto “Hospitality is the Life of Friendship” by stamping “ZIP” into the palm of the Initiates’ right hands—the hand of Friendship.
Once again the rush week was a success, as 43 students of the Class of 2021 decided to join our Chapter here at UTHSC. Later in the fall we

As the spring semester begins, we look forward to continuing the fun times here in Memphis with a few more of our annual events. One such event we will have is our ZIP Idol, in which both students and teachers alike will perform in a talent show to raise money for the Memphis Boys and Girls Club. As always, we look forward to what the Dentones, an all faculty band, have in store for the big event. With the fall behind us, the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Xi Psi Phi looks forward to what the spring of 2018 has in store.

with cash prizes for the three best costumes. We wrapped up the fall semester with our initiation party for the new members on November 17. Our initiation is always a good time, as we have a two-part initiation. The first is reserved for new members and chapter executives only, followed by a party for all members of the ZIPs fraternity at a separate location. for everyone in attendance. All new members attended and the chapter officers conducted the initiation ceremony. he 2017 summer and fall semesters have been full of adventure for the ZIPS at Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas. We welcomed a wonderful new group of members last spring, who have proven to be leaders in ZIPS, their classes, and in our community. Our summer semester started off with a bang— our annual Fourth of July Barbeque, which served the entire student body and doubled as a philanthropy event. Non-ZIPS members provided donations in order to participate in the barbeque, and the proceeds were donated to the Wounded Warriors Project. Further, ZIPS members traveled the world this summer on mission trips. Most of our D3 members went to Jamaica in late July, where they put their new clinical skills to the test and helped out over five hundred patients in four days. Many of our members also attended a week-long trip to Tyler, Texas, offering free dental XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

care to a community closer to home. Some of our ZIPS members also served in Bolivia and Zambia! Going into the school year, ZIPS welcomed the new D1’s by selling tackle boxes filled with helpful materials for lab work. This is an annual tradition for our chapter, and we help the D1’s organize their new materials, offer them advice, and get to know our new classmates! The D1’s also enjoyed our “Back to School Bash,” welcoming everyone back to Dallas for a new year. Overall, Fall semester was a semester of giving. Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas in late August. ZIPS members came
together and hosted a bake sale and donation drive for the hurricane victims. ZIPS also volunteered at Dallas Life—a recovery center for the homeless which offers amazing opportunities for those in need, and at Mission Arlington as well. Mission Arlington holds a special place in our chapter’s heart because it is a free dental clinic in our community. Collectively, our efforts within these organizations over the past semester were both humbling and rewarding. The Alpha Pi Chapter not only worked hard this semester, but was able to host some great school and chapter events. Every year, the three fraternities at Texas A&M host the

annual TriFrat Halloween Party for the entire school. Each year, members of our chapter get together and go to Oktoberfest, celebrating the German culture; surprisingly, we have some great polka dancers! We also started the new tradition this year of attending a Dallas Stars hockey game. We may be in Texas, but our hockey fans could easily fool you. Our semester rounded off with our annual Friendsgiving and Tacky Christmas Sweater Party. We have exciting plans for our spring semester! Check back in the next edition of ZIPS Quarterly. he Xi Psi Phi Beta Omicron chapter at MWU hit the ground running this year, holding a rush week in September that included volunteering at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) and a BBQ Social with Dr. Howard Alstrom on campus. The rush week attendance response surpassed our expectations, and our chapter family quickly rose to 32 members! In October, we held our Friendship Degree and Chapter Charter ceremony, which was graciously conducted and hosted by the ZIPS Supreme Chapter. Later that month, we toured the Chicago Dental Society Foundations Dental Clinic in Wheaton, IL. This lead to six members volunteering with CDS at ISDS Illinois Dentists Salute event during Veteran’s day with Dr. Dean Nicholas, Dr. Tom Schneider, and Dr. Renee Pappas in caring for veterans at the dental clinic.

We also have quite a few events we are working on for the near future. Our Academic Chair, Howard Tsoi, is currently working on our scrubs and hats fundraiser, and we have another team of officers planning our first Beta

s 2017 comes to a close, Omicron Chapter proudly looks back at a successful year. Back in May, we sent off our Class of 2017 members in style with roast pork as well as many other barbequed delicacies and drinks. This signature event is also where graduating members passed the torch to the current executive committee led by President Julie Delcorde. Our leadership team started the academic year off with a blast by hosting a country-themed kickoff event on Friday, September 8th. Amidst fun music, fairy lights, balloons, and delicious barbecue, our returning brothers and sisters, as well XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

as the new first year class attendees socialized in a setting that transcended time and space. New members were treated to more adventures during our annual Initiation Day on Saturday, September 23rd. Not only did they get an orientation of the proud history of Omicron Chapter as well as a glimpse of all that ZIP has to offer, new members also bonded over adrenaline rushes as they participated in boat races, flip cup tournaments, obstacles courses, blind-folded trivia games, and a condiment fest. The memorable day concluded with performances from the ZIP Comedy Club and the Membership Oath. Congrats to new members who decided to embark on this journey with us! Our Halloween Party provided the perfect closure to October by creating just the right amount of exuberance, magic, and mystique. On October 27th, the ZIP house, packed
to capacity as usual, was ghoulishly delightful. Besides prizes for best costumes, the organizers introduced a midnight snack segment as a surprise. The partygoers gave unanimous positive feedback to the executive team members who always strive to implement fresh ideas and push boundaries. As always, the brothers and sisters at Omicron Chapter go above and beyond to support one another get the most out of their immersive dental school experience. The array of social events aptly complements the unique academic resources ZIP has to offer. Each class prepares a ZIP Study Package—including study tips and useful notes and diagrams—for the class immediately following their footsteps. and hindsight, a mock bell ringer exam for Dental Anatomy with nearly 100 stations, and a Biomaterials SOS Review Session. In contrast, the second years get mock oral exams and an introduction to Clinic before they start seeing patients for the first time. Third years have the opportunity to attend Oral Surgery and suturing seminars as well as presentations on international outreach opportunities, residency applications, mastering
Axium, and how to succeed in clinic and patient management. Moreover, President Julie Delcorde and the executive team worked tirelessly to spearhead new initiatives including the launch of a structured mentorship program that connects student members with recent graduates. The fourth-year students will benefit from seminars on preparation for the licensing exam, post-graduate planning, finances, insurance, as well as contract negotiations and associateships. The passion and drive of the Omicron Chapter is evident in the constant development of new projects that are self-sustainable and well-integrated into the student experience, as we are never satisfied with the status quo. As the holiday season approaches,
we look forward to our Christmas Party where we celebrate the end of a successful year and look forward in anticipation for our annual ZIP Formal, which will be held on January 27th, 2018! Past years saw over 350 guests in attendance at the ZIP Formal, so we are eagerly awaiting another classy, exquisite night celebrating our fellow members’ achievements. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to all the members and alumni, without whom Omicron Chapter could not have provided such an enriching student experience filled with meaningful social, academic, and philanthropic events. As we bid farewell to a memorable 2017, we are ready to take on the rewarding challenges 2018 will bring us.

Dr. Robert M. Unger remembered for his dedication to the ADA Association’s 8th District Trustee dies September 3 at 93 years of age. Reprinted from ADA news By David Burger Dr. Robert M Unger, ADA 8th district trustee from 1980-1986 and ADA vice president from 1973-74, died September 3, at 93. Born in Chicago to Austrian immigrants, Dr. Unger earned his dental degree from the Chicago College of Dental Surgery in 1946. He was a member of the Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity, Lambda chapter. A veteran of the US Army who served in WWII, he was honorably discharged as a captain of the US Army Dental Corps in 1948. A life member of the Chicago Dental Society, Illinois State Dental Society and the ADA, Dr. Unger served as president of the Englewood branch of the Chicago dental Society and the Illinois State Dental Society, was a co-founder of the Illinois Dental Political Committee (currently DENT-IL-PAC) and helped establish Illinois Dental Service Insurance ( Delta Dental of Illinois). He also served as president of the Chicago Academy of General Dentistry and was a member of the American Dental Polictical Action Committee from 1986-1992. Dr. Robert M.
