Address to the Supreme Chapter Board of Directors DR. FABIO G. APOLITO

W
elcome to the Xi Psi Phi Board of Directors meeting. I would like to thank all in attendance for their effort to join us in Chicago. Many of you have traveled a great distance to be here and I thank you. This is a truly excellent group and the heart of the fraternity. I would like to take a moment to remember our fraternity brother, Carl Sebelius. Carl was our Supreme Editor, Past President, and above all a great friend. He left us this month and will be remembered as an amazing man who lived for the fraternity. He had a personality that was one of a kind and knew our by-laws from memory. Carl will live forever in our hearts. We also take a moment to wish our immediate past president, Randy Parmlee, well as he fights his own battle. He is truly missed today, but I have no doubt we will see him soon and he will have us laughing as always. Keith, Randy, and myself attended the Interfraternity Council meeting in Denver. A meeting at which, I was appointed treasurer of the IFC. We learned that all the fraternities face the same problems we do. In fact, we almost dissolved the IFC at the meeting. It’s clear that the dental fraternity system is in trouble. The world has changed and our value has gone down in the eyes of students (ie. exams, social, pre-clinic, etc.). We need to change, and will, to continue as a very valuable part of dental education. Our primary mission clearly needs to be increased alumni dues collection. Alumni dues are
the lifeblood of the fraternity and it cannot survive without the generosity of our alums. We are moving toward using PayPal to pay dues and even have digital Quarterly issues. We have a great web presence on Facebook and our website. We will welcome all student input on these matters as they have a Dr. Fabio G. Apolito better grasp of the subject. I have initiated work on an alumni database that will be accessible on the website. I consider this vital to providing help for Zips when they graduate, as it will help them locate local alumni that can guide or even employ them. It will also keep alumni members in touch among other things. Together we will move forward toward a different, but better future as a fraternity. The dynamics have changed but our friendship, core message, and purpose certainly have not. Goodbye to Carl L. Sebelius, Supreme Editor and “Gentleman of Dentistry” ANNE-LISE FINK, DDS

I
t is with sadness in my heart that I dedicated this issue of the Quarterly to our Supreme Editor and very dear member Carl L. Sebelius, Jr., D.D.S. To borrow a quote from Jack Nelson, DDS, the Chi Chapter faculty advisor for UMKC School of Dentistry, Carl was a true “gentleman of dentistry. He was quiet and thoughtful, but when he spoke, everyone listened.” There is a huge empty space where Carl sat at the Board of Director’s meeting this year in Chicago. His contribution to the Xi Psi Phi Fraternity was significant, moving through several offices and serving as Supreme Chapter President from 1992–1994, and finally as Supreme Editor from 2006 til now. He attended almost every meeting and was always seen with camera in hand taking photos of the Zips at all occasions. His 10 years as the Supreme editor helped us attain new levels as we moved toward color issues and entered into the digital world. It was the work of Carl that allowed the Quarterly to receive the Silver Scroll Award from the International College of Dentists for the most improvement in 2015. I have BIG shoes to fill having been elected the new Supreme Editor and will do my best to keep up the quality of the Quarterly. I am thankful to have the help of Lawrence Chu, Iota ’75, to take the photos, as I am only adequate in taking iphone photos.
At the Supreme Board meeting it was decided in the interest of reducing cost, to reduce the number of print issues sent to the active chapters. It seems our students are much more interested in perusing a digital copy, which can be found on the website. In order to help defer the cost of this publication, we hope Anne-Lise Fink, DDS our members will sponsor the Quarterly by submitting your business card and promoting your practice for a mere $150 per issue. You will be published in the next issue. Also if you have any contacts with dental vendors who wish to advertise in our publication, please have them contact us. As a reminder to all who submit articles to the Quarterly, we need it in Word document format and pictures must be submitted separately with captions under the photos. Dr. Pat Blanton, Alpha Pi ’74, 2015 winner of the Xi Psi Phi Distinguished Alumni Award, was recognized by The Lucy Hobbs Project Dr. Blandon, former vice president of the ADA, is the recipient of the Industry Icon award. The award recognizes dental care providers who set new benchmarks in their profession. Dr. Blanton is a professor emeritus in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and interim dean at the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina. She was the first female president of the American College of Dentists.

In Memory of Carl L. Sebelius, Jr., D.D.S. October 12, 1940 – March 13, 2017 Xi Psi Phi Supreme President, 1992 –1994 Supreme Editor, 2006 – 2017
C
arl L. Sebelius, Jr., D.D.S., 76, of Nashville, TN, lost a hard fought battle to cancer March 13, 2017. As a child, Carl Sebelius, Jr. always wanted to know how things worked and dreamed of becoming a scientist. He was inspired to pursue a career in dentistry by his father and grandfather. Carl Sebelius, Jr., DDS, is the third ‘Carl Sebelius’ in his family to carry ‘DDS’ behind his name. Carl Sebelius attended undergraduate at Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1961. He received his dental degree from UTHSC(University of Tennessee Health Science College) in 1964 and completed his internship and residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at UTHSC in 1967. Dr. Sebelius stayed for over 50+ years serving as Professor and various faculty board appointments within the UT College of Dentistry. In addition to his faculty responsibilities, Dr. Sebelius maintained a robust private

dental practice from 1968 to 1985, and from 1985 to 2000 was a practitioner with the University Dental Practice group. Carl’s dedication to the college and his students is clearly seen by his UTHSC faculty involvement. He served on the COD Faculty Senate, was chairman of the Committee of Faculty, and served on the Administrative Council, to name but a few. In total, he served on 18 different COD committees. Throughout his career, Carl has been highly engaged in the field of dentistry and has served as president of virtually every organization of which he is a member, including: the Memphis Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; the Memphis Dental Society; Tennessee Dental Association; Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Psi Chapter; Xi Psi Phi Fraternity; and the American Dental Interfraternity Council. He has also served as a Regent for the American College of Dentists and was currently serving Xi Psi Phi Fraternity as the supreme editor of its twice-yearly international magazine, a position he has held for 10 years. Additionally he served in leadership positions for the American Dental Association, the Tennessee Board of Dentistry and the Regional Medical Center at Memphis (now Regional One). His dedication to his field has not gone unrecognized and Carl has received numerous awards in his career, including: the Richard Doggett Dean and Marguerite Taylor Dean Honorary Odonatological Society International College of Dentistry Award in 1964; the Tennessee Dental Association Fellowship Award in 1992; the American College of Dentists Fellowship Award in 1994; Who’s Who in Dentistry in 1995 and 1996; the Alumni Distinguished Service Award from the UT Alumni Association in 1998; the Hamilton Young Award from Xi Psi Phi in 1999; Induction in the International College of Dentists in 2007; and the Memphis Dental Society Humanitarian Award XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY
Zips, hunting, fishing, photography, archaeology, travel, and dental editing. I have had more enjoyable breakfasts, lunches and dinners with him than I can remember. Had a quality visit with him in Denver at the ADA in October. He was a man to look up to. Fitting that the U of Tennessee dental school named him an outstanding alumnus for 2017. in 2009, the 2017 Outstanding Alumnus Award from UT College of Dentistry Alumni Association. With his tireless dedication to the field of dentistry, one would think Carl had no time for outside hobbies. Of the many things he has accomplished in his lifetime, Carl says that people are surprised to learn he was an Eagle Scout, worked as a disc jockey while at Vanderbilt University, was a ham radio operator, and served as president of the Memphis Bass Fishing Club. He remains an avid boat enthusiast and has held offices locally and nationally in the United States Power Squadrons®, a boating safety and education organization. In his retirement, Carl traveled extensively for organized dentistry meetings, as well as for personal enjoyment. He is survived by his loving wife Judy Millen Sebelius of 55 years, his daughters Ann Hale (Kevin) and Carolyn Kirk (Keith), grandchildren Nicholas, Natalie, Emily and Matthew and sisters Jane Oliphant (Bob), Carolyn Hoglund (David) and Susan Shoff (Michael). This is so sad and unbelievable. Many thoughts and prayers to, and for his family. There are very few people with the outstanding qualities that Carl always shared with us. We will honor him by remembering and keeping this up. Thanks also Keith for keeping up with things under such difficult circumstances. Susan Smith Have known Carl for 44 years and knew his dad and mom for 8 years before I met Carl. This news hit me hard. Carl and I had many interests in common, including

Over the years, I was always impressed with this “gentleman of dentistry.” No matter where I encountered him, no matter what organization, committee or meeting, I was impressed. He was quiet and thoughtful, but when he spoke, everyone listened. He had a sense of humor that always added to his observations. COLLEGE CHAPTER REPORTS
BETA MU CHAPTER Southern Illinois University Alton, Illinois Founded 1985
T
he ZIPS at SIU-SDM have been busy this semester. The new academic year was “nothing but gold” for the SIU-SDM ZIPS. It started out by having RUSH week with the theme “Go for the Gold with the ZIPS.” The opening ceremonies consisted of a cookout with games that followed. Ultimately, there were sixteen D-1 students who took home the GOLD by joining XI PSI PHI fraternity. The new SIU-ZIP members include: Rachel Bayles, Brady Hails, Coleman Choate, Michelle Hickey, Brent Crenshaw, Daniel Jurgens, Katelyn Genebacher, Alexis Lintker, Emily Gerber, Joey Marsek, Ryann Gilley, Rachel Ramsay, Maya Habibi, Dave Thielen, Tara Habibi and Claire Willenborg. Once the “ZIP-lympics” were over, it was time to move onto the biannual ZIP open at Cloverleaf Golf Course in Alton, IL. The teams participated in a nine-hole scramble with current ZIP dental students as well as a few ZIP Alumni. The scramble was filled with friendly competition and plenty of Jell-O shots to ensure everyone thought they were Arnold Palmer on the course.

With the holidays in sight, the SIU fraternity members wanted to host a food drive for the Alton Crisis Center (local food pantry). The food drive kicked off at a local bar where students could bring in canned goods to receive a drink sponsored by the SIU-ZIPS. Food drop off bins were placed around campus to ensure that donations continued until Thanksgiving break. The SIU ZIPS donated a surplus of food to the Alton Crisis
Center for those in need around the holidays. Right before break, the ZIPs held a Thanksgiving dinner for all members. Everyone feasted on turkey, mashed potatoes, rolls, green beans and plenty of pies. ZIP members got together and enjoyed a meal one last time before before everyone went back to their families for the holiday. With only two more weeks of school this semester the ZIPS are planning a

From recruiting new members, to a golf outing, to collecting canned food for those in need, to holiday parties, it has been a busy year for the ZIPS at SIU, but we are all looking forward to what 2017 has in store! — Casey Ritchhart

017 has been great for Iota Chapter thus far! We started winter quarter off right with our annual Tahoe Trip. Every year in January, we rent a cabin in beautiful South Lake Tahoe to spend time with each other outside of school. Some skied, snowboarded or snow-shooed their way across the snow, but we had the most fun bonding under the cozy fire. Amongst old traditions, we started a new fundraiser, which we are planning to continue next year. February 14th was enjoyed by singles and couples alike as Jesica Gonzalez, Philanthropy and Fundraiser Chair, lead
the fundraiser for Valentine’s Day chocolate strawberries. Around 250 strawberries were hand dipped, decorated, and packaged in a Valentines Day Box with a love note. ZIPs made all Valentine’s Day dreams come true. When we are not eating strawberries, we are feeding others. Jesica, continued our strong philanthropic involvement, by leading Iota chapter to the SF-Marin Food Bank on March 7th. We volunteered to help sort and package food that will go to neighborhood pantries, children’s food snack programs and soup kitchens. It was extremely rewarding and we look forward to going back again soon!

Dr. Adams spoke of her journey into dentistry, especially in a time when women in dentistry were rare and Dr. Eaton spoke of his musician-turned-dentist path and how he developed a lifelong passion to provide free dental care to our homeless population. We will soon be saying goodbye to our wonderful 2016–2017 board members and electing our new 2017–2018 board. Our elections BBQ will be April 26th, where we get to enjoy each other’s company while munching on BBQ and listening to speeches from candidates for next years board. Last year we had a musical number and a tribute to the movie Love Actually, and hopefully this year will provide similar excitement. We are equally excited to see who will be elected into their new positions! Another future event we will be participating with is on May 6th. Admit Day is an event when all the dental students come together to welcome the newest dental class, the Class of 2021! We involve ourselves by acting on the advisory panels, taking new students on campus tours, and getting to know the newest class. ZIP’s members set up a booth to celebrate our fraternity and meet potential future-Zips members. We always make a great impression! Our Senior Farewell Dinner is scheduled for May 12th at the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel. In this last dinner, we celebrate our graduating seniors, hear from the

with great enthusiasm. Along with the Bake Sale, these events provided opportunities for members from all years to de-stress and enjoy delicious treats before the exam season began. Our interactions with the Ronald McDonald House staff and families have left all of us eager to help the organization in whatever ways we can and we have enjoyed being affiliated with such a worthy cause! Not only did Omicron Chapter host the best social events of the year, we also provided our members with academic sessions and mentorship. Each class prepared ZIP seminars on a variety of topics. For first years, our chapter—led by 2nd Year Academic Representative, Chantal Diniz—organized a course overview session in September to ease the potentially daunting transition into dental school. Additionally, we helped boost the firstyears’ confidence in learning and challenging different test formats by hosting two dental anatomy mock bell ringers, as well as a Biomaterials review session seminar led by ZIP alumni Dr. Fawaz Siddiqui. For second years, our senior members, led by 3rd Year Academic Representative, Kimberly Hawrylyshyn, gave an insightful prep session regarding comprehensive patient care and how to succeed in the clinic. There will also be a mock oral test for the Oral Diagnosis course coming up later in May. Fourth-year members, led by 4th Year Academic Representative, Salvador Alcaire, presented their expertise and helpful tips to succeed in the clinic for the third years, as they took on the task of applying everything they learned in the classroom and laboratory to patient care. For our graduating members, the ZIP Graduating Seminar Series continued on and included a weekend Prep Course for the National Board Exams, among many Volume 113, Issue 1 | 15

others. With sessions like these, it is no wonder that Zippers win the majority of academic awards at the University of Toronto and go on to become very successful clinicians! To celebrate the completion of another successful school year and say farewell to our graduating members, ZIP will host a “senior send-off ” party on Friday, May 5th where we plan to serve roast pigs as well as many other barbequed delicacies
and drinks. We all look forward to sending off our graduating fourth year members in style! Of course, our gratitude goes to our entire executive team led by President Hamid Mousavi—we wish you all the best in your future endeavors! The pig roast will also be where the newly elected executive committee will be announced—best of luck to next year’s council as you carry the torch of our wonderful fraternity!

provided an opportunity for D3 and D4 students to share their knowledge with D1 and D2 members. The annual beer pong tournament was hosted by Zips at the Quaff in downtown Kansas City. Open to all UMKC School of Dentistry students and staff, teams of two battled it out in a single-elimination bracket format. The Weston Trip is the premier Spring event hosted by the UMKC Zips, and it once again sold out as students from all of the dental fraternities traveled by bus 45 minutes
north to the town of Weston, MO. Attendees delighted in the sunny 70-degree weather while playing yard games, perusing storefronts, and sampling the local fine wines and spirits. Those who worked up a sweat playing games were able to cool off and quench their thirst in the underground cavern of O’Malley’s Pub while enjoying the live music. The final event of the semester was the Senior Sendoff and Officer Installation, held at the beautiful Diastole Scholars’ Center right across the street from the School of Dentistry. Chi chapter welcomes a talented and highly-motivated group of leaders to serve during the 2017–2018 academic year. At the senior sendoff ceremony, each senior was recognized and given the opportunity to share their future plans. They were then given their Xi Psi Phi Certificate of Graduation to be officially sent off! Several year-end awards were also presented. This was an especially memorable night for the Chi chapter as we were presented with the Walter C. Harrison Chapter Achievement Award from the Supreme Chapter! etween school, social events, and philanthropy events, the members of the Alpha Pi Chapter of Xi Psi Phi have been staying busy this spring! We kicked off the spring semester with a “Back to Cool” event. XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

ZIPS hosted a small gathering at local spot, where we were able to catch up with members and classmates and hear about everyone’s short break from school. In February, we hosted an event for the first years called “Chicken Chase.” The occasion begins by everyone meeting at a local spot and being divided into teams. Also, one lucky first year is chosen to be the chicken and gets to put on a full chicken suit for the day. The chicken heads to another local spot to hide, while the other teams try to find it. First team to find the chicken wins!
This semester, ZIPS members found themselves fortunate enough to volunteer at many philanthropy events. As a fraternity, we took a group of twenty to a local community dental clinic to provide free dental work on a Saturday. Another weekend, a few ZIPS travelled with the school to Tyler, TX to provide free dental work. ZIPS members can also be found around the community, at local homeless shelters and schools, educating others about good oral hygiene practices. ZIPS members are always looking for ways to lend a helping hand. In March, we were able to host another happy hour with first years and were excited to get to know them better in preparation for the upcoming fraternity recruitment. We also had a week off for spring break. From taking vacation to the beach together, to volunteering time in Colorado, all members had a relaxing time and fun time off from school. One of our third years even got married and a group of ZIPS members attended the wedding together. In April was the most exciting event of the semester, our fraternity recruitment. We spent the coming weeks preparing a rush theme, planning a lunch with videos and Volume 113, Issue 1 | 19

slideshows, and booking an event center to throw our annual party. This year, our theme was “ZIPS Thursday Night Lights.” We had so much fun throwing it back to high school for the evening. After recruitment, we ended up with 19 new members and we are so happy. To celebrate our new members, we hosted an event that day after school

to meet everyone and to welcome them to ZIPS. That weekend, we also hosted our annual Pub Golf for all members. Pub Golf consisted of a list of tasks and the goal of trying to have to lowest score at the end. All had a fun time! April is always an exciting time at the school for the second years, as they get their first patients. ZIPS
support their members in this time by pairing up a third year with a second year to help with them their first appointment. Also, ZIPS provided each second year member with a binder of helpful tips and tricks for the clinic. We are always here to support each other. To conclude the semester, ZIPS members participated in our annual boat party. It is one of the members’ favorite events. After completing finals, we took a bus to a nearby lake and spend the day on the water. raduation is always a bittersweet time. It’s a time we celebrate the wonderful friendships we have made and grieve the fact that many are going different ways. Those graduating and those staying behind, we all think about how much we have grown throughout dental school thus far. We remember the day we came in and we remember the struggles, the successes, the hard lessons, and the easy lessons learned. More than anything though, around this time of the year we are all so grateful. Grateful for our friendships, our education, and our journey. One of our graduating members reflected on two special friendships she made even before their D1 white coat ceremony. Lauren wrote, “The pride I have in my own accomplishments pales in comparison to how proud I am to have been able to complete this four year adventure with these two amazing women. I have never met two more selfless, compassionate, loyal, and intelligent people and I am truly blessed to call them friends. Through fate and Facebook we went in together and through grace and God we came out together. A special thanks for four years of friendship and the many more to XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

come.“ All three of them have been very active in the Alpha Chapter and we are so thankful for the time they invested to our fraternity. We enjoyed celebrating all of our graduating members at Senior Send Off, complete with dinner, dessert, games, and dancing. Each of our new Doctors of Dental Surgery shared words of wisdom with our chapter; the overall theme was to gravitate towards friendships because building those relationships and investing in each other is the only way to stay sane throughout dental school. We all truly know that Xi Psi Phi has aided immensely in putting
those words of wisdom into action. This past semester, our chapter was active in serving our community at St. Andrew’s Breakfast Program. We were able to serve breakfast to over fifty homeless individuals in our community. Our social events included our monthly ThAC meetings (Thursday After Class) at a local restaurant, a trip to the bowling alley, and a pizza party to get us through final’s week. Our 2017-18 Executive Board is currently busy planning events and reading our chapter to greet some new D1s in June. We look forward to another year joined together in friendship. or those of you who haven’t heard about the new fraternity on campus, I am excited to introduce Xi Psi Phi Beta Omicron! Abbreviated as ZIPs, our fraternity is composed of a conscientiously constructed board that, together, intends to make big waves at Midwestern. The heart of ZIPs is the desire to serve our community, and every event we plan will be focused on this goal. This summer, we are working to create two volunteering opportunities for our charter members, and possibly even an officer’s retreat. Come fall, we will have an initiation event for our new members that will be entertaining and memorable, to say the least! We look forward to beginning the recruitment, rush, and pledge processes this fall, because we know there are other like-minded students on this campus and we want to serve alongside you! t has been a very exciting and very busy Spring semester for the Beta
Mu chapter Zips at Southern Illinois University! We started of 2017 with good food and good fun by initiating all the new members at our annual initiation party, which was hosted at a local restaurant. We all welcomed sixteen new faces into our chapter and showed them all how we here at the Beta Mu chapter like to have fun! Early in the semester our chapter made its way back to the Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis. Twelve members of our ZIPS continued our tradition by cooking up a huge delicious meal for the patients and their families staying at the house with the help of Dr. Keith Dickey and Mrs. Peggy Dickey. We enjoyed this experience so much and cannot wait to take more members back next semester. As the winter season started winding down, our chapter made its way to one of our favorite pastimes, St. Louis sports outings. Our members started off by cheering on the St. Louis Blues vs the Toronto Maple Leafs to a huge 5-1 victory! They continued to cheer on our local teams with an annual St. Louis Cardinals game. Our members enjoyed the sun, drinks, peanuts, and some Top 10 plays.

The semester started coming to a close, which could only mean one thing. It was time for our ZIP open golf tournament. Despite a rainy day, our Jello shot girls made sure our participants had tons of fun as they played through some less than ideal conditions. After nine holes of some
healthy competition, we all enjoyed a cookout full of hamburgers and hotdogs once again grilled up by our very own Dr. Dickey. This day never ceases to be a blast for everyone involved whether you’re a golf pro or going for that highest score. The Beta Mu chapter will be saying

XI PSI PHI STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Reynold L. and Vivian Foutz Scholarship RACHEL BRIANA FORER Iota Chapter Dentistry was not the obvious career choice for young Rachel, growing up in Los Angeles, with a family of lawyers. Although there was, and still is, a strong legal influence in her life, with her mother, Michele, who practiced many different areas of law; her father, Jeffrey, who practices estate planning, trust, and probate law; and older brother, Max, who recently started practicing law in Portland, Oregon; Rachel was never swayed from dentistry. At the young age of 7, her orthodontic care required an extensive phase 1 treatment, which required her to “crank” her own expander, which she really enjoyed doing. She also “spedup” the exfoliation of her baby teeth (aka self-extraction), because frankly, she enjoyed that too. Her interest in dentistry was deeply rooted. At a young age, she started shadowing her own general dentist, “Dr. Lisa.” It wasn’t until she started high school at Santa Monica High, when she extended her shadowing to hands-on assisting. During high school, Rachel followed her other passions in singing and playing soccer. She was a member of the most elite choirs and played goalkeeper for the varsity soccer team throughout her high school years. All of these passions continued into her college years at the University of California, Davis (‘UCD’) in Northern California—except soccer, because there was no time. As a singer, at UCD, Rachel was selected out of 100 students, who auditioned to be one of eleven young women in UC Davis’ only all-female a cappella group, The Spokes. She also was a board member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, an active member in Global Dental Brigades, and also one of two pre-dental liaison’s for ASDA’s District 11, while academically majoring in Biological Sciences, with an emphasis in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, and minoring in Psychology. During occasional school vacation breaks, Rachel’s trips back to Southern California included shadowing different dental and specialty clinics. In 2013, Rachel spent her 21st birthday with UC Davis’ branch of Global Dental Brigades to provide dental care, hygiene and education in Honduras to impoverished adults and children to communities in-need. This was the first time Rachel had traveled to another country to provide dental service. Due to the people she helped and the opportunities she experienced, she formed a deep connection to community dental service. This trip reinforced her goal to become a dentist.

As an undergraduate at UCD, Rachel desired to attend the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry (‘UCSF’) after attending the annual Impressions Conference—a conference organized and run by students at the San Francisco campus. Not only did her experience connect her with UCSF, but it also connected her with the Xi Psi Phi Fraternity. All the students she had met and worked with during the conference were affiliated with ZIPs. She was drawn to their down-to-earth, compassionate, and “cool” personalities. After that day, Rachel promised herself that if she was admitted to UCSF, she would become a ZIP. After learning she had been accepted to UCSF School of Dentistry, Rachel fulfilled her self-made promise and became a member of Xi Psi Phi, as a D1. As a D2, she became Social Chair, and as a D3, she took on the role of President. In addition to being actively involved in ZIPs, Rachel continued her singing by joining UCSF’s only a cappella group, Vocal Chords, and continued participating in community service by becoming Pediatric Director for Children’s Health Hut. In addition, during her D1 year, she was elected as Secretary, and then re-elected her D2 year. She was elected as Treasurer of all the student organizations on campus as a D3 student. Moreover, Rachel was awarded the Osher Scholarship Award in June 2015 for excellence in academics and community service, as well as, the Xi Psi Phi Iota Chapter Scholarship for fraternity involvement. As an upcoming D4 student, Rachel will continue to give back to the fraternity by collaborating with the Supreme Chapter President to form a ZIPs Alumni Database. Then after graduation, if all goes as planned, Rachel will pursue a one-year residency in a GPR or AEGD program, and then continue to practice general dentistry in the Bay Area. No matter where the road may lead, Rachel will continue to make a mark on the fraternity that made a mark on her.
Charlie Reagan Scholarship NATALIE NUNEZ Alpha Tau Chapter Natali Nunez is a graduating senior, completing a five-year DDS-MPH dual degree program at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. Natali was drawn to the dental profession at a young age, and in high school she began to volunteer as a dental assistant. In this role, Natali recognized the impact of language, cultural, and educational barriers in patient-provider relationships. This led her to realize XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY
the potentially meaningful role of health care providers in patients’ lives, and she became set on pursing a career as a dentist. Natali was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and attended Cleveland Humanities Magnet High School in the San Fernando Valley. From a young age, Natali’s parents emphasized the importance of education. The first person in her family to graduate from high school, Natali attended the University of Southern California where she majored in Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Studies. Upon entering dental school, Natali found natural and genuine camaraderie among members of Xi Psi Phi. She participated in the
fraternity rush process and became a ZIP by the end of her first year of dental school. Natali served as the Social Chair and Academic Chair of the Alpha Tau chapter. Throughout dental school, Natali was involved in several research endeavors and received fellowship funding for her work. She presented her projects at various conferences, including the National Dental Conference and National Oral Health Conference, and earned two student research awards. Natali was also highly involved as a teaching assistant for cariology and population oral health courses in the dental school curriculum at Columbia. Her opportunities in public health, research, and teaching have heightened her interest in
a career in dental education. Influenced by her past mentors, Natali has continually engaged in outreach and mentorship for students interested in careers in the health professions. Like many Los Angeles natives, Natali enjoys yoga, trying new and unique foods, hiking in the Santa Monica mountains, and finding new places to have a good latte. After living in New York City for the last five years, she now understands why everyone loves the weather in California. Natali plans to continue battling the cold weather in the northeast; she will be moving to Boston this coming June to pursue an endodontics residency at Harvard University.

Thomas Sweet, Pi ’53, Dies
Thomas O’Dowd Sweet, 1988 president of NYSDA(then, the Dental Society of the State of New York) and former ADA Trustee, died Feb 10. He was 88. A native of Chadwicks in Central New York, he spent his adult life in North Syracuse, where he also practiced dentistry for over 50 years. He was attending dentist at the SUNY Upstae Medical Center throughout his career. Dr Sweet was a graduate of Hamilton College, Clinton, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He was a navy veteran. He and his wife of 59 years, the former Jeanette Bray, were the parents of 5 children. Son, Timothy was in practice with his father. Dr. Sweet’s involvement in organized dentistry also included a long tenure as the Fifth District Dental Society reporter to The New York State Dental Journal and editorship of the Fifth District Bulletin. He was a well known Syracuse sports figure as well. An ardent golfer and Syracuse University Basketball fan, he was also leader of the Syracuse “chain gang,” in motion on the sidelines at Syracuse football games for over 35 years. Dr. Sweet’s survivors include sons, Thomas, Timothy and Joseph; daughters Susan and Kathleen; seven grandchildren; a sister, Ruth; nieces and nephews.
