I

ncreases in technology over the last several years has brought numerous opportunities for all of us. The older you are the more changes you have seen. In the health care field, one of the first things that made my life freer was the “pager.” At first it was a beeper, then voice messages telling me who to call back. This allowed me the flexibility to do things that I had been restricted from doing before, tied down to a land line telephone when I was on call. That was most of the time as an Oral Surgeon. I was one of the first to get a cell phone. It was bulky and not too efficient, but it freed me up. Today, while I am not on call, we travel a lot and I can stay connected by cell phone technology most anywhere in the world. Besides the voice technology that same phone, sorry they now call it a “device” can send and receive e-mail, text messages, pictures, and even allows me to see a full digital edition of the Xi Psi Phi Quarterly anywhere in the world. Why then are we concerned about the increasing technology all around us? In the the field of journalism, the question is how do we get the most and best information to our audience? In this case, getting information to the members of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity. This includes a broad spectrum of individuals. There are student and alumni members of all ages and backgrounds. Students now are very proficient in digital technology and dental school curriculum depends heavily on computer based education. This even includes digital simulation of numerous dental procedures. On the other hand, we have a large base of alumni members less dependent on digital technology. Some of whom are very resistant to the “new” media. Technology has come a long way since I started as your editor, 10 years ago. In the beginning all the material had to be typed into hard copy, since most college chapters would send in their reports hand written. All pictures were hard copies of extremely different quality. To set up a draft we would take over a table or two, then spread out the material, and with scotch tape literally paste up an issue. When it was done I would mail, then later FedEx it to our publisher who would put in a form to be photographed for lithographic printing. In varying degrees, I have move from real “cut and paste” to “digital cut and

paste.” If you ever wondered where that term came from on your computer, this is it. Now when I gather the all material I can send it electronically to the publisher and it can be returned electronically for proof reading and when everyone is happy, you push a button and it is approved and the printer takes over. In the process a Carl L. Sebelius, Jr. digital copy of the issue can be prepared from the same material for posting on our web site Xi Psi Phi.org. So why do you ask, to print or not to print? There are several considerations. Primarily they are financial and personal preference. First financial; just the cost of postage has gone up considerably over the past 10 years. The technology of printing has increased making it quicker and easier, but not without cost increases. However, technology has help slow the cost increases especially in the field of color printing. Stop and think how many of us now have a color printer in our home. This would have been unthinkable 10 years ago. Second is personal preference; which do you like better? There is something about having a thing that can hold in you hand and look at whenever you want. Maybe something to put on your desk or in waiting room for everyone to look at. It is a historical record of the fraternity. I have volumes of past issues that have recorded the history of our fraternity. You may notice a lot of pictures in the Quarterly, people like to see themselves in print. I have been at numerous editorial meetings and professional organization meetings where this has been discussed over and over again and there is no definitive answer. The answer is different for each organization. You may also be aware of the same dilemma facing all forms of media publication. Hello Fellow ZIPS:

I

hope that all of you have had a great and prosperous year. This is my last article as Supreme President. As I thought about my dental life as a ZIP, I realized how lucky I am. I started out as many dental students do; uncertain about joining Xi Psi Phi. What is in it for me? a Christmas party, a graduation party, happy hour or maybe pizza for lunch? All sounded good, so let’s join. After graduation, that was it; get on with my career. ZIP time was over. However, it did not turn out that way for me, and I am so grateful that it did not. Slowly, and again somewhat reluctantly, I worked my way back into Xi Psi Phi. I donated my annual dues, then attended a Christmas party, and a few years later I attended a graduation party. As time went on, I became more involved with the local and Supreme Chapters; and now I will soon be a past Supreme President. I cannot count all of the great people I have met as a result of my ZIP affiliation from so many places over the years — California, Texas, New York, Michigan, Toronto, Oregon, Ohio, Tennessee, Arizona and many other states and countries have ZIPS involved. They are great people, who have different life styles and opinions, but one thing is unanimous: “Let’s help fellow ZIPS, help society and keep dentistry a great profession.

Recently we celebrated the annual Christmas party for Beta Mu Chapter @ Southern Illinois University at our home. It is awesome to interact with optimistic, friendly, hard- working young people who will be the heart of dentistry when I am long gone. Hopefully they will take the time to stay involved in Xi Psi Phi, and have half the enjoyment that I have had meeting Dr. Randy Parmlee and interacting with fellow “ZIPS.” As stated previously, I am lucky to be associated with Xi Psi Phi, and all of you are too! profession, but the question has arisen in our fraternity. Due to generally rising costs in all areas and a stable, but not rapidly increasing membership, cost cuts are inevitable. When it comes to the Quarterly there are several ways that costs can be contained. 1. Decrease the number of issues 2. Decrease the size (number of pages) 3. Eliminate or reduce print issues 4. Increase advertising income This problem will be discussed at the next Supreme Board of Directors Meeting on April 16. As you may be aware the Quarterly received the Silver Scroll Award from the International College of Dentists for the most improvement last year. It seems a shame to quit now that we have been recognized for our efforts. My first recommendation would be to increase advertising income. Due to our relative small circulation, this has been a problem. XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

Advertisers like print and digital in different situations. My challenge to you, THE MEMBERS OF XI PSI PHI, is to see if you can obtain some advertising for our publication. We have members in all parts of the USA and Canada, many of whom are in prestigious leadership positions. You have friends and acquaintances in dental businesses and order a lot of equipment and supplies. My challenge is for you to spread the net and see what you can catch. Dr. Keith Dickey our Supreme SecretaryTreasurer has all the information that you need as to cost, ad size, etc. when you identify a prospect. Do not hesitate to contact him. COLLEGE CHAPTER REPORTS

ALPHA CHAPTER University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan Founded 1889

T

he new academic year brought with it a new class of D1’s and new ZIPS members. Over the summer, we welcomed all of our new colleagues with a number of social and academic events to help prepare them for their dental school experience. We held a Michigan party where our native Michiganders shared food, drinks and games unique to this fine state. We held our initiation dinner for our new members at the Original Cottage Inn. New members received their pins, learned our society’s handshake and had the opportunity to meet returning members. Throughout the semester, we held a number of academic events to help our members succeed in their endeavors. Semester previews during lunch were held for both the D1 and D2 members, and upperclassmen also held pre-clinic help sessions where they passed on tips and tricks to hone their clinical skills. In accordance with tradition, treats and words of encouragement were left on the benches of D1s and D2s before each of their practical examinations in pre-clinic. The D3 members also organized a session to give advice to D2s preparing to take the NBDE Part I exam where they

gave recommendations for scheduling, study materials and test taking strategies. To do our part for our community, several members volunteered for a local organization called Food Gatherers, where they helped to organize and prepare food to be handed out to those in need. Each month, we had our traditional ThAC (Thursday after class) where members gathered at a local bar to unwind and socialize with their fellow members. In October, a group of ZIPs members made a trip to the Plymouth Apple Orchard to experience a true Michigan fall, complete with apple cider and fresh donuts. Members also gathered to celebrate Oktoberfest and to watch

the Michigan Wolverines take on the Indiana Hoosiers. Our annual Friendsgiving celebration was held in November, where members came together and feasted on turkey, stuffing and other delicious Thanksgiving favorites. To close out the Fall semester, we held a lunchtime pizza study party where members could eat and commiserate about the upcoming final exams. This semester has been full of new members, new friendships and new memories made, and we are extremely excited for what the New Year will bring.

Our fraternity held an outreach screening at the Lower East Side Harm Reduction Center. Upper classmen performed basic intraoral and extraoral screenings and referred the participants to the College of Dentistry for a thorough comprehensive exam.

Regular bake sales are used to promote the fraternity while fundraising at the same time. As Halloween nears, members contributed baked goods to lure starving students and sweettooth passerby. Everything from cupcakes, to macaroons, cookies, whoopie pies and more! These goodies have been saturated with fermentable sugar, to ensure future employment XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

To escape the concrete jungle and the hustle-bustle life of a dental student, a few of our fearless members made a trip up to Six Flags Great Adventure during this fall season.

Our annual faculty dinner was held at Villa Berulia, a Croatian and Italian restaurant. Members of the fraternity and faculty enjoyed a three course dinner. Alumni members reminisced and reiterated the importance of maintaining relationships, especially after graduation

IOTA CHAPTER University of California San Francisco San Francisco, California Founded 1894

T

he 2015 Fall Quarter got off to an exciting start at UCSF! In late September the Iota chapter went on a mission trip to Jamaica. 34 members spent 10 days in Jamaica providing Jamaicans with free dental care including cleanings, extractions and fillings. The team got the opportunity to work alongside 7 dentists from the bay area and 8 hygiene students from Washington. The group worked hard at 3 clinic sites to provide over Iota chapter members at the annual initiation party.

600 people with 400 extractions and 200 fillings. Members were able to squeeze in some fun too. Members enjoyed exploring some of the attractions of Jamaica including climbing Dun’s River Falls and snorkeling in the crystal clear waters. Many members and attending dentist even spent one day at Blue Hole jumping form 20 ft. cliffs and scaling waterfalls. Members said the trip was one of the most memorable experiences of their careers. Brittany Vacura, active chapter president, said that the “opportunity to provide free dental care to those who need it was very

rewarding. Getting to do it with 33 of my best friends made it even better!” The Iota chapter started the academic year by welcoming the D1 students to San Francisco by taking them to a Giant’s Baseball game. Upper classman members and 35 incoming first years watched the Giants win their game against the Reds. In early October the fraternity hosted their annual “anything but clothes” party. Member’s creative outfits were made of duck tape, tinsel and even gloves! The chapter hosted other fun activities like salsa dancing lessons and an acai breakfast bowl

social. Numerous academic help session were held including waxing tutorials, anatomy review sessions and perio help sessions. Members enjoyed learning from one another and getting to know one another at these events. The chapter welcomed 37 new members this year, growing the chapter to a total of 118 members! The 37 new members were welcomed to the family unofficially at a backyard BBQ and induction party, where upper classman got the opportunity to get to know the incoming class. New pledges were officially inducted into the fraternity at a formal dinner in November. New pledges were introduced to their second and third year big sibs during the dinner. Members cherish the strong relationships they form with their big and little

sibs; members say they gain mentorship, friendship and support from these relationships. The dinner also welcomed alumni and friends of the fraternity, may of whom have been strong supporters of the chapter and its activities. Through social, academic and philanthropic events the Iota chapter provides a well-rounded and memorable experience for its members. 2015 has been an exceptional year for the Iota chapter and they are looking forward to their many upcoming events next year!

he fall semester of 2015 has been an amazing one for the ZIPS members of Baylor College of Dentistry! Starting in late June, the newly elected officers met to plan

the summer and fall events to not only welcome in our new members, but entertain and get our returning members involved in the community. July kickstarted our new members involvement in social and community service events—so we started it off with a bang. July consisted of a July 4th BBQ which also doubled as a philanthropy event. Non-ZIPS members were invited to come have fun and help our cause by bringing canned goods to donate to our local food bank. During this month we also supported our local sports team by cheering on the Texas Ranger, and eating quite a few dollar hotdogs in the process. August welcomed a new school year and fresh faced D1’s who did not yet know how fun ZIPS can be. The annual ZIPS “Back to School Bash” as usual was the party of the weekend. To welcome the new class and all of their instruments, we sold tackle boxes to help them organize and offered some friendly advice as they settled into the dental school life. In September, as the summer months faded but the heat did not, ZIPS members took a trip to Austin, Texas, to float the river for the weekend. They came back sunburnt and thirsty for beer, so thankfully Oktoberfest was just around the corner. Oktoberfest celebrates German culture through food, live music, polka dancing, and of course BEER, BEER, BEER!! Making this easily one of our

ZIPS member at the Osteoblast Pubcrawl—We are the champions!!

ZIPS members’ favorite events every year. Every October the three dental fraternities at Baylor team up to throw a Tri-Frat Halloween Party which always brings large attendance. It was no surprise that our D2 ZIPS members had the best costume of them all- they literally took the trophy. During this month ZIPS members also organized a clothing drive for a local women’s shelter. With the help of students and faculty at school we were able to significantly impact the lives of many women in our area. The month of November is always a time to give thanks to those in our community. This year ZIPS dedicated the month of November

to helping others through several events. We participated in a multiorganizational effort to thank the staff at our school by helping to host the annual G.R.A.C.E (Gathering Respectfully to Appreciate Compassionate Employees) event. The three dental fraternities at school also took part in the first annual “Osteoblast Pub Crawl” which through t-shirt sales raised money for the winning group to donate to a charity of their choice. Of course ZIPS won this event and will be donating the money to an organization this Christmas to help buy toys for children who may not have a Christmas otherwise. Our amazing philanthropy team also found us a new way to

serve the children in our community this Thanksgiving through an event with Windsong. This family gateway event allows local musicians, artists, and healers alike to share their passions with oppressed and impoverished youth living in local Dallas shelters. To end the month and officially induct the new D2 members, we hosted our annual potluck “ZIPSgiving.” At this event we held a candlelight ceremony filled with ZIPS traditions as we inducted the new class- “In the name of the XI, and the PSI, and the PHI!” December will bring a few more events to round out the semester. Be on the lookout for details on these in the next ZIP Quarterly!

ALPHA OMICRON CHAPTER University of Tennessee Memphis, Tennessee Founded 1921

T

his year at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Xi Psi Phi took in 34 new members. After planning an eventful and exciting rush week, we then had an initiation party, as well as a halloween party; both of which were a blast! The highlight of this semester has been our newest philanthropy opportunity. UT ZIPs formed a fundraising team for the St. Jude Marathon. This group of dedicated fitness gurus decided to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and run the half marathon and full marathon. At first, I set our fundraising goal to the minimum of $500. To my surprise we had raised $1000 within the first month of our team being formed. By race day, we had gone above and beyond our goal and raised a total of $2020 to support this wonderful cause. Running this race was one of the most rewarding things any of us have done, and this is a tradition that I hope continues for years to come. efore the fall semester even began, the Zips of Beta Mu were hard at work. Nine Xi Psi Phi members from the D4 class (Denise Hand, Sara Crocks, Zach Rodeffer, Beth Hagen, John Cairns, Natalia Habibi, Kasey Kirchner, Bob Huey and Brandon Yeager) and four members from the D3 class (Ethan Grounds, Anni Garcia, Sean Ehrhardt, and Ashley Cain) embarked on a journey to Jamaica to participate in a week-long volunteer project to provide dental care to underserved populations near Montego Bay as part of the Jamaica Dental Mission. Members teamed up with students from the SIU School of Pharmacy and other dental students

the island and enjoying some sun, sand, and Red Stripe. At the start of the school year, we worked hard to prepare for our upcoming Rush Week. We set the stage for the Beta Mu rush week with a Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville ® themed lunch featuring Margarita “Mocktails.” Rushees then attended a Cheeseburger in Paradise cookout, followed by our Margaritaville themed Rush Party on Friday night, featuring limbo, volleyball, an open bar, and a ‘tattoo’ station where rushees could get their very own Xi Psi Phi “Parrot Head” tattoo. This year, the Zips had a great turn out and ended up with 20 new rushees. As fall weather crept in, the Zips began to move indoors for a Halloween Costume Party in October, followed by Zips-Giving in November, where members met up to feast

PATRICIA L BLANTON, PHD, DDS, NAMED XI PSI PHI DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI FOR 2015 Dr. Parmlee: I am honored to be able to present this year’s XI PSI PHI Fraternity’s, Joseph J. Schwarz Distinguished Alumni Award. The purpose of the award is to provide recognition for the outstanding achievement of alumni of XI PSI PHI Fraternity. Our recipient is Patricia L. Blanton, DDS, PhD. I have in my hand an abbreviated curriculum for Dr. Blanton consisting of four very impressive pages. Some of the highlights include: an education career starting at Hardin Simmons University, Baylor University, Harvard Medical School and a periodontal certificate from Baylor College of Dentistry. Previously she was a professor and department chairman at Baylor College of Dentistry, a 1st vice president of the American Dental Association, president of the American College of Dentistry and in her spare time had a full time practice of periodontics and implantology. Her previous professional appointments and positions number greater than 50. She was president of the Texas Dental Association, served on numerous American Dental Association Councils, chairperson of numerous Texas Dental Association committees, Dallas County Dental Society and at least 9 professional association memberships.

Dr. Matt Niewald, a general dentist in Lee’s Summit, Mo. received the 2015 Missouri Dental Association (MDA) Dentist of the Year Award at the Association’s House of Delegates 150th Celebration hosted November 13 in Jefferson City. Dr. Niewald received this award jointly with two other MDA dentists, Dr. Douglas Wyckoff, a general dentist in Cameron, Mo. and Dr. Mark Zust, a general dentist in St. Peter’s, Mo. The Dentist of the Year Award recognizes a member dentist who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Association, to the profession of dentistry and/or to the community in the past year. This year, it was requested these three candidates for the Dentist of the Year Award be considered as a joint entry. This year, Missouri dentists faced a challenge with a large, Missouri-based dental insurance company. The challenges dealt with election processes and bylaws operations, and if the company was acting in compliance XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

with these. After many weeks with no resolution, these three dentists filed suit to bring about a fair and transparent process, which did occur as a result of their initial efforts. These dentists demonstrated outstanding service to the Association, the profession and the community, proving to members that organized dentistry and its leaders are willing to take action when necessary to ensure that third party payers provide transparency in their processes and that providers are treated fairly and communicated with honestly.

DR. TIMOTHY P. REGAN APPOINTED AS ASSISTANT PROVINCE III CHAIR Dr. Timothy P. Regan completed an advanced seven year combined Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degrees Dr. Timothy P. Regan from Farleigh Dickenson University and New York University College of Dentistry in 1992. Dr. Regan’s formal education and experience also include an externship in New York City’s Montefiore Hospital. To-date, Dr. Regan is involved with ongoing trainings and Continuing Education courses. This ensures that Dr. Regan delivers the most current information, technology, and care to his patients. Dr. Regan is proud to have been voted as one of New Jersey’s Top Dentists. This is quite an honor and an overall sense of pride for himself, his patients, and his family. He also served as the Pledge Master for the New York University Beta Chapter of Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity 1990-1991, as well as the XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

President of that chapter during 1991-1992. His recent appointment, as Assistant Province III Chair for the aforementioned fraternity, has been welcomed by the N.Y.U. Alumnus. Dr. Regan comes from a family of dentists, including both mother and father. During his years of schooling, he assisted in his family’s dental practice prior to graduation from dental school. The experience he gained was invaluable. Dr. Regan mentored with Dr. Ahlert in the practice. He has extensive training in numerous cosmetic treatments which include porcelain veneers, laminates, crowns and the very latest in cosmetic dentistry, Lumineers. He is certified with the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and successfully works with Botox for patients requiring this option for therapeutic reasons such as TMJ, as well as a cosmetic option. Dr. Regan is also certified in Invisalign, Mini Dental Implants, and Zoom Whitening technique. He is welcomed as a key note speaker representing the Monmouth and Ocean County Dental Association. His lectures and seminars receive an overwhelming response both here in New Jersey and in Aruba as well. Dr. Regan delivers general family dentistry with compassion, pride, and a gentle touch. Dr. Regan is continually driven to achieve excellence while providing you with the highest level of care, diagnostics, and desired results. His patients and he share longevity in loyalty and are a proven testament to his keen ability, expertise, and overall dentistry. Dr. Timothy P. Regan has lived in Monmouth County for the better part of his life, where he now resides with his wife and 4 young children. He is proud to be an integral part of this community both personally and professionally.
