Dear Keith (Dickey), First of all, thanks for including Mom and me in the weekend plans when you were in KC. Thank you so much for the pictures. It was so good to be with the group. I can’t tell you how much it means to hear so many nice things about my Dad. He certainly made us proud of him. He taught us a lot about how to live life to the fullest. I just wish that he had been with us longer, but that was not God’s plan. He loved the Fraternity and all of you. The honorary membership means so much to Mom. That was really special. She wants to stay in touch with all of you because you mean so much to her. I feel exactly the same way. You have always made me feel welcome! The plaque for Dad was just beautiful. I could just see him smiling down at us from Heaven. He would also be so proud of Craig Mulherin. They developed such a close relationship. Please stay in touch. uch like many years, this past year has been a combination of both good and bad circumstances. It was a sad year for all of us with the loss of our good friend and colleague, John Haynes. But on a positive note, both John’s widow, Judy, and his daughter, Karen, were able to join us for the Awards Dinner conducted during the Supreme Assembly and Board of Directors’ Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. This gesture was very much appreciated by all who attended the meeting. Another disconcerting outcome of this past year has been a repeat of the decrease in the payment of Alumni Membership Dues. This is a situation I hope WE (all Zips) can reverse. I call on ALL MEMBERS to connect with at least one Zip classmate who has not contributed, asking them to please do so. And, any new ideas to help alleviate this financial situation would be greatly appreciated to help build Xi Psi Phi back to a strong and stable Fraternity. Please contact the Supreme Chapter Office with your suggestions. Contact information is listed on the back of the cover page of this issue of The Quarterly. This Supreme Assembly was a great success again this year. All College Chapters were represented except for

one. It was one of the largest Supreme Assemblies ever conducted, which I hope exemplifies a new enthusiasm toward building Xi Psi Phi back to greatness. In my opinion, the attendees were supportive and motivated, as well. Financially, with the help of a strong stock market, we had a stable monetary year. It is hoped we can increase Dr. Randy Parmlee the number of dues-paying members to help offset any future downturns in the market. he International College of Dentists has informed Xi Psi Phi that the Xi Psi Phi Quarterly has been selected to receive the International College of Dentists Silver Scroll, Division I Award for its improvement in overall quality in the use of color and graphics in 2014. The Dental Journalism Awards are to recognize those publications that have exhibited outstanding journalism in content, graphics and improvement during the past year and encourage others to bring their own publication to a higher level. The competition has been placed in high esteem by Dental Editors and their staffs over the years, shown by the high level of quality publications that have entered the contest each year. The award will be presented at the Annual

ery two years Xi Psi Phi holds a Supreme Assembly to bring together student and alumni members from all chapters to discuss mutual experiences of the members. This is an opportunity to meet Supreme Chapter, other chapter officers and students from around the country. This year 45 Zip members were present.

Besides the opportunity to network with students, faculty, and alumni many long lasting friendships were developed. I can attest to this from past experience. Following the meetings an awards banquet was held at Lidia’s Restaurant in the Freight house district of Kansas City.

COLLEGE CHAPTER REPORTS

ALPHA CHAPTER University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan Founded 1889

fter a well-deserved holiday break, we came back to school rested and ready to begin another fun semester in ZIPS. Our first priority was to hold a semester review for our D1 members to help prepare them for the challenging semester they were about to begin. During this review, upperclassmen members shared any tips or tricks they recalled to help the D1s manage their courses. A similar review was held for the D2 members, with special attention being paid on how to navigate treating patients in the clinic as well as strategies for studying for the NBDE Part 1 exam. As the semester continued, a number of social and academic events were held for our ZIPS members. In January we held a bar crawl, during which our members wore their ZIPS t-shirts and had a fun night of socializing before the semester really got underway. We also held our first Restaurant of the Month event in late January, where members met after school to have dinner at one of the many unique restaurants in the Ann Arbor area. In addition to this, we continued our tradition of Thursday After Class (ThAC) where

we meet one Thursday each month at a local bar to unwind and socialize with our fellow ZIPS members. Our annual Senior Send Off was held at the Holiday Inn, and was a night full of games, dancing and words of wisdom from our graduating ZIPS D4s. We held a bowling night, which had an excellent turnout, as well as a laser tag outing that was also quite popular. We held a few help sessions for our D1 members for some of the more difficult cavity preparations they were learning in pre-clinic. Before each practical, treats of cookies, pies, and brownies were left along with words of encouragement for the ZIPS D1s on their desks. We also held a Dinner and Learn at Cottage Inn with Wetzel Insurance, where participating

members learned about various debt management strategies that will undoubtedly prove to be useful when graduation approaches. As the semester came to a close, we held a chapter wide meeting, during which elections for our new board members took place. Overall, this semester has been a fun and exciting time in ZIPS, and we are very excited for what the coming year will bring. — Jaslynn Kalsi Alpha Chapter Secretary

uring the winter quarter at UCSF, the Iota chapter had our quarterly fraternity formal, which was held at the historic and elegant Cliff House of San Francisco, located on the edge of the land overlooking the beautiful bay. We arrived right before 6pm with a sunset of 6:05pm and the entire restaurant lit up as the sun sunk below the horizon. Our dinner options included Salmon, Chicken or vegetarian with crem brulee for dessert. Two guest XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

speakers included beloved Dr. Lori Doran Garcia, DDS who works at UCSF and Pacific Dental Schools, as well as Dr. Mehran Hossaini, DMD of the UCSF Oral and Maxillofacial surgery program. Both presenters delivered inspiring speeches that reflected on their time in our shoes. It was an incredible night. Our annual trip to Lake Tahoe took place in mid-January. Students enjoyed a long weekend of skiing, sledding, and relaxing at a mega cabin in the middle of Tahoe. The trip was a fun success, with fast, snow dusted skiing and no injuries were sustained! We are already excited to return next year. Each year we elect officers who are academic chair leaders, to ensure our familial mentorship and friendship is sustained by means of academic support. The third-year leaders find ways to hold events to aid the second-year students, and the second-years for the first-year students. Our academic leaders continue to create and provide creative and helpful seminars throughout the year, despite students settling in as month go by. This quarter we held an “endo” night to aid in introducing endodontics to the second year students, which right now is their most challenging field in sim lab. The first-years benefited by receiving help with making

temporary bridges and perfecting their class II fillings. Our students are constantly paying it forward! This year our social chairs and officers did an incredible job establishing our first annual Mr. Dentistry competition! The idea stemmed from UCSF School of Pharmacy’s event entitled, Mr. Pharmacy. The categories of competition include formal wear, swimwear, a talent show and more! Judges ask questions and keep the show entertaining. Several candidates had videos and intriguing talents to display to their classmates who cheered them on and showed them support. We had an outstanding

showing and featured at least one Mr. Dentistry candidate from each class, including an international dental student and orthodontics resident, Dr. Kjeld Aamodt, who ended up taking the title. Gift certificates for local businesses and a memorably trophy was presented. This will be an event we run every year, and so pleased with how the debut year went. The Iota chapter of Zips is hosting another new event, as our first ever-exclusive series of lunch and learns. Our exclusive events are put

Beginning our Ethics and Professionalism Committee, with our first ever exclusive Lunch and Learn series

on by our ethics chair, which organized a Professionalism lunch and learn with the delicious Lou’s Sandwiches of San Francisco. Dr. David Graham and Dr. Ernest Kohl are featured professionals and clinical professors at UCSF. The event presses difficult questions and recognizes grey areas of practice and patient management. We are so thankful for the faculty who share their experience and expertise with us! The philanthropy chair of the Iota chapter has introduced a new form of community service that is exciting and rewarding for all! In the past we have done several events. We volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, but after only having slim opportunities to give our time to the organization; we decided to expand our volunteerism to more places. Xi Psi Phi has teamed with Urban Forrest to plant trees around the city, specifically in Potrero Hill. What a fun new way to give back! Our philanthropy events continue to offer different types of events to accommodate the interests of all of our members.

Each fall during our one week break, members and alumni of Xi Psi Phi journey over to Jamaica as a part of the 1000 Smiles Project. During the spring, new leaders are chosen to be the coordinating factors of the trip logistics. D2’s Brittany Vacura, Adam Wandell, and D3 Jake Wood were chosen for this position and have already started planning another successful Jamaica trip 2015. Detailed planning and mass coordinating with supplies, travel, accommodations and program teams are underway. More info to come as we approach our next trip! Lastly, we look ahead to our Senior Farewell Dinner, which will be taking place on May 8th, 2015 at the Marines’ Memorial Club and Hotel, in downtown San Francisco. The event will honor our graduating seniors, highlighting videos of their time spent as a part of the UCSF 2015 Class. micron Chapter rang in the New Year as well as the 125th Year Anniversary of the XI PSI PHI Fraternity with our annual ZIP Omicron Formal. As planned, two CE courses were provided to our faithful alumni on the morning of January 17th, and many were in attendance. ZIP alumni and renowned oral surgeon, Dr. Lam, gave an interesting talk about trigeminal nerve damage management, while ZIP alumni and orthodontist, Dr. Vendetteli, provided tips for early orthodontic management. Both presentations were very informative and all attendees found it to be a valuable morning!

Later that day, over 400 members, alumni and guests, gathered for a classy evening of dinner and dancing at the Liberty Grand. We also celebrated some of the achievements of our brothers and sisters during the presentation of the Omicron Chapter Awards. Congratulations to our ZIP award recipients: Christopher Tassone—Culbert and Shanks Award—For the brother/sister who has contributed the most time and effort for the betterment of the chapter during their undergraduate years, Michael Leeson & Isabel Cumandra—Partridge-Luks Award—To honor the brother and sister in third or fourth year of dentistry who combines fraternal contribution with scholastics and extracurricular activity.

Nicolas Economopoulos— Honor Key Award After a successful turnout for our annual Charity Poker Tournament and Christmas party in late 2014, it was no surprise that our “St. Patrick’s Day Green Beer Flip Cup” bash, held in March at the ZIP house, was one great night. Members from all years came to de-stress and sing a little bit (or a lot) of karaoke and participate in flip cup festivities before the exam season began. There are definitely some talented vocalists and flip cuppers in the Omicron Chapter! To celebrate the completion of another successful school year and

say farewell to our graduating members, ZIP hosted a “senior send-off ” party where we served two 50lb roast pigs as well as many other barbequed delicacies and drinks. It was a good night of good company! Thank you to our past executive: Christopher Tassone, Michael Leeson, Vera Telyakova, Brett Empringham, and Nicolas Economopoulos, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors! The pigout was also be the site of our elections for the incoming executive committee, with Miss Catherine Nguyen taking over as President—best of luck to next year’s council as you carry the torch of our wonderful fraternity!

The pig out was also the night we chose to unveil our new ZIP house sign. This project was one of the first initiatives of this year’s council, and took nearly 6 months to complete. It was all thanks to the handy work of recent ZIP alumni Michael Danielake who dedicated countless hours to its fabrication. It was the perfect gift to leave our house with, as the ZIP house has been without one for 5 years and now finally we can proudly state to the community what our house stands for. Not only did Omicron Chapter host the best social events of the year, we also provided our members with academic sessions and mentorship. Each class prepared ZIP seminars on topics such as Biomaterials, Oral Surgery, Oral Diagnosis, and Restorative Dentistry. For our graduating members, the ZIP Graduating Seminar Series continued on and included topics such as Disability Insurance, MTA use in Endodontics, OSCE Mock Exam, NDEB Review, and Interviews & Associateships among many others. With sessions like these, it is no wonder that Zippers win the majority of academic awards at the University of Toronto and go on to become very successful clinicians! Omicron Chapter also continued to provide to those in the community by hosting fundraising events

for Ronald McDonald House. Our annual Poker Tournament is our main charity event, and with this combined with our flip cup event we raised $1500! Congratulations to the winner of the Sneaky Siddiqui Trophy, Nicolas Economopoulos, showing us all what it means to be a poker player! Our interactions with the Ronald McDonald House staff and families have left all of us eager to help the organization in whatever ways we can and we have enjoyed being affiliated with such a worthy cause! Through social, academic, and philanthropic events, Omicron Chapter provides the best student experience at the University of Toronto. We also love to give back to the community and this year in addition to serving food to the homeless under the bridge, we decided to volunteer at SoupMobile. It was such an amazing opportunity to help prepare and package food for the homeless men and women of DFW area. In March, ZIPS members indulged in a game of chicken chase. The appointed chicken would go and hide at a local bar and the first group of individuals that would find the

chicken could partake in the ZIPS tab for some adult beverages with the chicken. Chicken chase was a great opportunity for the first year dental student class to mingle with ZIPS members one last time before rush week. During spring break our President, Ryan Schmidgall, and faculty advisor, Dr. David Grogan, had the opportunity to go to the Xi Psi Phi National Board Meeting in Kansas City. Congratulations to our Treasurer, Jonathan Havener for winning best Treasurer in the nation!

April brings around the biggest event of the semester: Rush week!!! ZIPS hosted a luncheon for the rushees to get to know more about ZIPS and its’ members and a Baylor’s Most Wanted themed party at a local bar in Deep Ellum. This theme took cops and robbers to a whole other level with first years dressing up as robbers and ZIPS members as their favorite law enforcement. This year Xi Psi Phi is proud to announce we had 30 first years prefer ZIPS. Congratulations to the 23 new members of Xi Psi Phi!

We went to several schools in the Washington Heights NYC area to give oral hygiene instruction, screen children and promote oral health through videos and activities. Another annual tradition is to honor our administrators, faculty and staff during our “Staff Appreciation Day.” We hand delivered gifts to the people who give so much to students at our school every day to show our appreciation. We also attended several social functions. We had a great time at our school’s annual Match Party, took

015 has been another great year for the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry Xi Psi Phi chapter! After resting up over winter break, we started the spring semester welcoming our newest members with The Great Zips Initiation Party. We turned the clock back to the Roaring 20’s, introducing our thirty-eight initiates to a famous Memphis speakeasy, Earnestine and Hazel’s. Decked out in formal attire even Jay Gatsby would be proud of, the ZIPs danced the night away to the tunes of DJ

Infinity. Afterwards, we took downtown Memphis by storm, finishing off the night with a bang! Once the newest ZIPs were thoroughly initiated, we got down to business with didactics, labs, and clinic. Despite the heavy course work, ZIPs were not too busy to give back to the community. Members gathered at the Target House to serve Breakfast for Dinner to the patients of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and their families. At the end of the dinner, ZIPs relived their childhood, helping the children construct crafts and playing games. We look forward to further volunteering at the Target House! As the weather improved, we turned out attention to the annual ZIP Cornhole Tournament and Senior Send-Off. The tournament is one of our favorite events as it gives everyone a chance to unwind and engage in some friendly competition between fellow ZIPs and non-ZIP members alike. Held at the beautiful Wiseacre Brewery, everyone enjoyed good food from Gourmet Grillers and the cornhole tournament until the awarding of some cool prizes to the victors. After a day of fun in the sun, we bid good luck to our awesome senior ZIPs on their adventures

the Zips of Beta Mu attended a Thanksgiving feast at the home of Xi Psi Phi Supreme President, Dr. Randy and Pat Parmlee and enjoyed the “ZIP Party Barn.” To jump-start the spring semester Zips took a trip to the Ronald McDonald House at St. Louis University Medical Center in St. Louis Missouri. Members prepared and served dinner to several families who were staying at the Ronald McDonald house while their children were going through long term medical treatment. With the weather too cold to enjoy the outdoors, the Zips enjoyed a night out in St. Louis to watch the St. Louis

Hockey Blues beat the Nashville Predators in what turned out to be an “over time” shootout. As the weather warmed, members took to the greens to get a jumpstart on their summer tans at the biannual Zip Open golf tournament on April 24th and then watched the Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies at Busch Stadium in St. Louis On April 28. Most recently, the Zips of Beta Mu celebrated our graduating seniors at the annual ZipNic at Holiday Shores Lake, where Dr. and Mrs. Savoca treated us to a day of boating, feasting, and simply watching the world go by as we welcomed Summer in full Zip fashion.

XI PSI PHI STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS Vivian and Reynold L. Foutz Scholarship Recipient SPENCER CROUCH Alpha Chapter University of Michigan

Thank you very much for the incredible honor of being chosen as the recipient of the 2015 Vivian and Reynold L. Foutz Scholarship for junior students. The Xi Psi Phi dental fraternity has been instrumental in my dental education over the past three years at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and I cannot imagine dental school without the help and support of my fellow “Zippers.” To tell you a little bit about myself, I grew up in Traverse City, MI with my mother (Lisa), father (Brian), and younger brother (Zach). My father is an accountant/ consultant for small businesses in the Traverse City area, my mother is the office manager for a local orthodontist, and my brother is currently attending Northern Michigan University pursuing a degree in construction management. While growing up in Traverse City my hobbies included participating in Boy Scouts, high school track, cross country and bowling teams, and lifeguarding at a local indoor waterpark. Following high school, I attended Western Michigan University (WMU) and majored in biomedical sciences with minors in chemistry and general business. While at WMU, I taught an introductory biological sciences laboratory, went to Nicaragua on a dental service trip, and published a journal article while working in an animal reproduction lab on campus. After

graduating from WMU, I married my high school sweetheart, Ashley, two weeks before dental school started! Needless to say, it was a busy month for us before getting settled in at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor! While I have been busy attending dental school, Ashley graduated from the University of Michigan with her Master of Social Work degree and is now the Leukemia Program Coordinator at the University of Michigan Hospital. While in dental school at U of M, I have been active with Xi Psi Phi serving as the D1 class representative, D2 class representative, and most recently treasurer. A majority of my “free time” in dental school has been spent traveling abroad conducting oral health research in the rural area of Meru, Kenya. With this information, we hope to help the local community open a self-sustaining dental clinic in a nearby hospital. In addition to traveling to Kenya, I have also participated in a student exchange program with a dental school in Bauru, Brazil. During this experience I had the amazing opportunity to learn about dental education abroad and observe the worldrenowned Centrinho Hospital of Craniofacial Anomalies. Following graduation from the University of Michigan, I plan on continuing my education by pursuing a career in orthodontics. Thank you once again for this incredible honor! uring the recent Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity Supreme Chapter Board of Directors meeting in Kansas City, MO, Dr. Patricia L. Blanton was elected as the 2015 recipient of the Joseph J. Schwarz Distinguished Alumni Award. The purpose of the Distinguished Alumni Award is to provide recognition for the outstanding achievements of alumni of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity. Dr. Blanton was initiated into Alpha Pi Chapter of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity at Baylor College of Dentistry in 1974. The Award will be presented to Dr. Blanton by Xi Psi Phi

Supreme President Randy A. Parmlee during the fraternity’s Hospitality Reception as part of the American Dental Association Annual Meeting in Washington DC at the Marriott Marquis Hotel on November 6, 2015. Dr. Blanton, professor emeritus professor in biomedical sciences at the Baylor College of Dentistry/ TAMUS, also, received the 2014 William John Gies Award from the American College of Dentists and Fellowship in the International College of Dentists,. Among other awards received, Dr. Blanton was presented the Gold Medal for Distinguished Service to the Texas Dental Association, Lifetime Achievement Award from the Dallas County Dental Society, Distinguished Alumnus

Award for Baylor College of Dentistry, and the Lucy Hobbs Taylor Women Dentistry of the Year Award from the American Association of Women Dentists. Inducted into the Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry Hall of Fame in 2012, Blanton has served myriad roles within organized dentistry, including terms as president of the American College of Dentists, Texas Dental Association, Southwest Society of Periodontists, Dallas County Dental Society and vice president of the American Dental Association. She has written over one hundred publications including author of one book, Dr. Blanton currently is in fulltime private practice of periodontics and implant dentistry in Dallas, Texas.

Eligibility for Award Only living alumni of Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity are eligible. For purposes of definition, an alumnus/a is any person who was regularly initiated in Xi Psi Phi Fraternity, and completed a dental degree. The nominee shall be outstanding and noteworthy in the dental profession. The nominee shall have made significant contributions benefiting his/her community, state or nation and the profession of dentistry The nominee shall exhibit interest in the Supreme Chapter of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity since leaving dental school.
