F

irst, I would like to thank all of the Board of Directors honored past Supreme Presidents, student representatives and guests for attending this installation of Officers and Board of Directors of the Supreme Chapter of Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity. I would like to recognize and thank Anne-Lise and Dan Fink and the loyal Iota Chapter alumni who have graciously welcomed the Supreme Chapter to this beautiful city—San Francisco! The hospitality of our many California ZIP members is gratefully appreciated and the Supreme Chapter is extremely proud to be here to share in the FRIENDSHIP shown by Iota Alumni Chapter.

The journey of life is often a very interesting road— marked by twists, turns and a very winding path—and we have no idea where we will end up! When I was asked to interview at SIU School of Dental Medicine in 1985, little did I know it would be with Dr. Keith Dickey—who turned out to be from my hometown—South Bend, Indiana and that his mother was actually my brother’s fourth grade teacher. This initial contact with the dental profession has led to my enduring FRIENDSHIP with Keith and my membership in Xi Psi Phi—which has brought me here today.

During the past year I have had the opportunity to attend the American Dental Interfraternity Council meeting as well as the ZIP HOSPITALITY Receptions at the ADA meeting in New Orleans as well as the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting. Meeting Xi Psi Phi

members from around the dental community has been one of the highlights of my experience with the Supreme Chapter. It is an honor to represent the Supreme Chapter at these events and I look forward to seeing many of you at these annual receptions in the upcoming year.

I have chosen the word LEADERSHIP as my biennial password and presidential Dr. Randy Parmlee platform. Leadership is the power or ability to lead or influence other people towards an organizational goal. Along with persistence, this will help fuel my two goals for Xi Psi Phi during my tenure in office: 1) to maintain or increase the membership of the College Chapter level and 2) to significantly increase and encourage the number of dues paying alumni members.

The second goal for financial security will need to be discussed by all members of the Board of Directors so we may produce some solutions to this eminent problem.

As we enter this—our Fraternity’s 125 anniversary year—I salute the LEADERS from the past who surround us today: Drs. Bonomo, Dickey, Doyle, Hall, Haynes, Jones, Sebelius, Tietz, Wier and Yip. I challenge these NEW LEADERS just installed: Drs. Apolito, Gurrola, Fink, Chu, Niewald, Carvalho and Covington—to demonstrate untiring devotion to OUR Fraternity—God bless Xi Psi Phi for another 125 years!

T

his year Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity celebrates 125 years of service to the dental profession and to its members. Also this year will mark the 110th year of the fraternities’ publication, the Quarterly. As you can see, there are considerable changes in this issue. Over the 110 years of the publication of the Quarterly, numerous changes have occurred. However, the primary purpose remains the same that is to keep the members informed of the fraternities’ activities. The membership is diverse and geographically spread over a large area. Many graduates move to places where there is no local chapter and the Quarterly provides a format to keep up with members around the world.

To keep the Quarterly as relevant as possible, the Editor needs your help. I receive information from college and alumni chapters, but I also need input from individual members who may not be close to organized chapters.

Please, send me any information about your activities, any comments, or questions that you may have.

To go along with a redesign of the Quarterly, an update to the website is also underway. A pdf version of the Quarterly will be available on the website. This will allow quicker and wider access for all members. More information will be coming soon, so keep alert!

To help with our new publication, I am announcing a photo competition for the cover. The Rules are simple:

1. This is open to any member (student or alumni).

2. The photo must be a high resolution, vertical format, digital jpeg image.

3. The photo should depict some aspect of the frater­ nity life. (This could be activities, functions, individuals, groups, awards, etc.)

4. This must be something of interest to the fraternity as Carl L. Sebelius, Jr. a whole.

5. The Supreme Editor will make the final decision on selection and publication.

6. The picture must be original and not previously published. A statement to confirm this must accompany the entry.

7. The deadline for possible inclusion is the same as the regular Quarterly deadlines of December 1 and May 1.

If the photo is selected for publication the author will receive credit in the publication.

I encourage very member to consider this. It would be an opportunity to show your photographic skills and to let the fraternity see what is happing in your part of the world.

T

he Supreme Chapter Board of Directors meeting was held at the Marine’s Memorial Hotel in San Francisco California on March 22, 2014. The business of the fraternity was conducted and a path set for the coming year. Some items of interest included: election of new officers for the next two years, discussion of finical matters, approval of a new format for the Quarterly publication, and presentation of awards.

March 13–14, 2015 was set as the dates for the next Board of Directors and Supreme Assembly meeting to be held in Kansas City, Missouri.

My name is Alexandria Hawkins and I grew up in the small Southern Illinois town of Pinckneyville, IL where I attended Pinckneyville Community High School. During high school, I took several dual credit classes that counted toward college credits with Rend Lake Community College. Accordingly, with the dual credit classes and taking a few after school and summer classes, I was able to obtain my Associates Degree from Rend Lake Community College by the time I graduated high school. After high school I attended Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville where I earned my bachelor degree in their Pre-dental program. I was an active member in the Kimmel Leadership Program and in the Pre-dental Program.

I am currently attending Southern Illinois UniversitySchool of Dental Medicine where I am involved in several extracurricular activities, including treasure of the Beta Mu chapter of Xi Psi Phi. I even won treasure of the year through Xi Psi Phi for 2013. Also, I am a member of the Student Council, Student Clinic Advisory Committee, American Association of Women Dentist, and Student Dental Research Association. I am currently participating in two research projects and will be presenting one of the projects at the American Association of Dental Research meeting in North Carolina in March 2014.

More interesting than all of my activities, is the fact that I have a twin sister and two brothers who are only a year older and are also twins. My father is a dentist in Pinckneyville, and was my inspiration to attend dental school.

My mother is a counselor at a local high school and also works as a crisis counselor. She has always encouraged me to work hard and strive to achieve my goals.

My plan after dental school is to attend an Oral Surgery residency program and become and Oral- Maxillofacial surgeon.

again in the near future. This event, in addition to more FAC’s, slowly led us to the end of the semester and another successful year.

We began to wrap up the year with our upperclassmen organizing individual meetings with our D1 members to talk about their experiences in school so far and continue to get to know each other better.

Additionally, a lunch and learn panel was held in which our D4 members discussed post-graduation plans, the decision-making process, and answered any questions. Our annual Senior Send-off Event was held at Dahlman Campus Inn, and each member dressed to impress to celebrate the successes of our graduating

he second half of the academic year at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry brought with it many more exciting events for our Alpha chapter in Ann Arbor. The first event of the semester was a continuation of our FAC (Friday After Class) tradition, where our members meet at a local bar to hang out and unwind. This was followed by our annual ice skating event at the Yost Ice Arena on campus, where our members got to have fun and show off their skating skills.

As the year progressed, more help sessions were organized for D1’s as they continued to develop their clinical skills. This included a winter semester preview at the start of the semester, as well as giving demonstrations and tips for Class 4’s and 5’s.

As always, encouragement and treats were left in the D1 lockers on each practical day to help ease the stress and let them know that the fraternity supports them. Help sessions were also held for our D2’s as they continued to work on RPD design.

A new event was hosted in February, as our members gathered at Bel-Mark lanes for a night of pizza and bowling. It was a wonderful event that we are excited to host

ZIPS members. It was an evening to remember that included a wonderful plated dinner, DJ, musical chairs, and a chance for the D4’s to share their future plans.

The year ended with elections, and our newest board members are working to plan ahead for this coming year and incoming students. The board is focused on continuing our traditional events, creating new events, and organizing recruitment and academic events for the new D1’s. Throughout the course of this academic year memories were made and many new members were welcomed into the fraternity. We are looking forward to this upcoming year, and wish all the best to our graduating seniors!

events to new members where upperclassmen personally assisted D1 and D2 students in preparing for restorative and crown/bridge laboratory practicals. For D3 students, we helped them transition smoothly into clinic by providing interactive seminars. D4 students were offered a residency workshop.

Community service events this semester included an alginate impressions event where members guided high school students in making alginate impressions from typodonts and pouring stone models.

Our chapter also organized various faculty mixers where alumni, faculty and students came together.

The alumni organized the mixer at Long Island which we participated in, got to network, and met students from different chapters. These social events have helped in creating alumni connections and expanding our network. In addition, lunch and learn

events provided educational presentations from various faculty members on their area of expertise.

This year, our chapter is excited to welcome 46 new members after a successful rush in the spring semester. We are looking forward to creating an environment within our chapter that will allow our new members to grow as professionals.

primary support system. Hiking in the freezing cold side-by-side simply to get a split-second view of the lake was the group’s goal. At times we felt lost; at times we felt like we should turn around, but at the end of the hike we all made it together with the distraction of our unforgettable conversations and laughs. A simple game of dodgeball exemplifies our ability to work together in an environment away from the classroom. Who would have thought that protecting partners from a fast-pitched ball would demonstrate our teamwork? It is the intra-fraternal connection that Xi Psi Phi at UCSF constantly tries to strengthen through the academic and extracurricular events.

We most recently elected our new Zips chapter board for the 2014–2015 year. We look forward to new energy and fresh ideas for the upcoming year. A prominent goal XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

we have for this year is to participate in more community service and philanthropy. Our chapter recently committed to 300 hours of service with the San Francisco Ronald McDonald House. I’m proud to be a part of a tightly woven family who is dedicated to not only the betterment of our fraternity, but the community as well.

Other highlights include establishing a committee to organize our annual mission trip abroad. This year, we will be traveling to Ocho Rios, Jamaica in September 2014. Additionally, we created an ethics chair board position to aid in maintaining integrity and justice within the fraternity. Also this year we added town hall meetings for open forum to increase member communication and transparency.

We capped off the year with our annual Senior Farewell Dinner, held at Morton’s The Steakhouse, San Francisco. Several members received Supreme Chapter recognition, including Xi Psi Phi Best College Chapter Co-Editors EJ Abasolo and Neek LaMantia, Glenn Cartwright Scholarship Recipient Will Kim, and 15 members received generous chapter scholarships. uring the long and harsh Canadian winter, Omicron Zippers did as much as we could to take our minds off of it! Kicking off 2014 with a bang, the historic Eglinton Grande Theatre and its iconic marquee lit up the night sky, held venue to our annual Xi Psi Phi Formal. With over 350 members, alumni and guests in

attendance, this night of dinner and dance was just what everyone needed to start the 2nd semester of school.

ZIP Alumni and ODA President also gave the students some encouraging words of wisdom. It was an amazing night to commemorate Xi Psi Phi’s 125th anniversary.

Next up, we had are 8th annual charity poker tournament which raised money for the Ronald McDonald House. This year we had just under 50 players sitting on 6 tables vying for the coveted Sneaky Siddiqui Award (Trophy Name). After many hours of grueling game play, Steven Spano was the winner. We successfully raised $900 for the Ronald McDonald House.

In addition to our poker tournament, we also had a charity bake sale where our members generously donated their time and goodies. Furthermore, we had our annual ZIP Cup tournament, which also added to our fundraising efforts. This year, Omicron is very happy to have raised $2750 dollars for the Ronald McDonald House.

Offering our members more than just social events, we had many academic seminars including a Mock OSCE for the 4th year board exams, restorative and prosthodontics seminars and reviews for the 1st and 2nd years. In early April we had an Alumni mentor night where we had graduates come and speak about their specialties, residency programs and experiences after dental school. We also brought in experts from the field to speak about accounting, financial management in dental school as well as insurance. Looking ahead, we also have our mock oral medicine exams for the second year members.

Coming up: Summer vacation is fast approaching which means that a whole year of zippers is graduating!

To celebrate this bittersweet moment where we say farewell to the graduating class, we have our ZIP Pig Out/ Senior Send Off where we order the largest roasted pig we can find! This event is also where we have our elections for next year’s positions.

Activities this spring included the “Zip-Tie” party, annual Weston wine trip, happy hours around Kansas City, and the Blue Note ball pre-party. The most memorable event this semester, however, was the sendoff of our beloved fourth year members. The senior sendoff was an evening full of Kansas City barbeque, heartfelt goodbyes, and

t Baylor College of Dentistry, despite our busy schedules at school, members of the Alpha Pi chapter of Xi Psi Phi always make time for a little fun and community service each month.

In January, we started the semester off with a big bang by hosting the back to school party with a continuation of last year’s rush theme. Roman Rave Toga Party Part II was the perfect way to start off the semester before we had to hit the books.

In February, members participated in our first annual Bar Golf. We “tee’d” off at Truckyard, where we enjoyed food trucks and the Treehouse special for a hole in one. The game continued to 9 other “holes” with the opportunity to earn a hole in one, eagle, par, or bogie at each bar.

As much as we like to have fun, we also love give back to the community.

One Sunday each month, members make time to serve food at a homeless shelter called the Bridge. It’s a very humbling experience that gives us a chance to reach out to our local community.

Given the hectic and very different schedules of each class, this event helps all classes get to know one another.

Alpha Tau ZIPS participate in many social events throughout the year. One of our social events this year was a brunch at Calle Ocho followed by a night out on the upper west side. We even had a ZIP from NYU join us! Later in the year we were able to meet up with NYU ZIPS again at Dave & Busters. Work hard, play hard is our motto!

Every year our chapter also recognizes the staff at Columbia College of Dental Medicine. We make sure to give staff-members gifts and recognition for all the hard work they do!

This past April, Alpha Tau members joined alumni, NYU and Stony Brook ZIPS for an Alumni DinnerLecture Meeting at La Parma in Long Island. We had a great time meeting ZIPS from the NY area!

Our chapter was also able to have dinner with Dr. Bonomo and his wife. Dr. Bonomo presented us with a chapter achievement award. He has been a great supporter of local ZIPS and we would love to take the time to thank him! THANK YOU DR. BONOMO for all you do!

This year, there were 13 new ZIPS added to our chapter: Jessica Hsu, Elizabeth Fadoju, David Beard, Sorana Sop, Katherine Fleming-Stayton, Laura Pauwels, Andrew Deek, Rita Twan, Jenny Han, Cheryn AmoAdjei, Tyler Zenga, Tessa McGregor and Tyheisha Roach. T

he University of Tennessee College of Dentistry Alpha Omicron chapter wrapped up another great year in historic Memphis, TN. The class of 2017 joined us for a great rush week in the fall. Everything started at the Waterford Plaza highrise condominium downtown. Full of barbeque, the new class was welcomed to our chapter in true Memphis style. But it wouldn’t be a true rush week without a cocktail night at Flight Restaurant & Wine Bar. Our faculty sponsors joined us, and the Class of 2017 saw the finer side of our chapter with this formal event. Rush week finished up with our famous ZIPs Flip Cup Tourney.

Member and non-member ZIPs alike showed up in full force to see who could take home the crown. All of our new initiates were invited to an Alpha Omicron tradition: an evening riverboat cruise down the Mississippi River.

Once the winter storms passed, our student body was invited to travel “around the world” with us

on Mud Island. Again members and non-members showed up to travel house-to-house visiting various “countries” throughout the night.

Some of our favorites were USA, Ireland, the Bahamas, and Iran. We welcomed the warm weather with some great events like our summer cookout that features a corn-hole tournament along the mighty Mississippi again on Mud Island. Many teams made up of students from all classes come out to compete for prizes from great dental sponsors. Along with fun in the sun, the fun continued when we sent our senior class off with an 80’s cosmic bowling night.

ith fourth years racing toward the finish line, third years finding their rhythm in the clinic, second years struggling to survive, and first years still trying to find their bearings, the spring semester at SIU

School of Dental Medicine turned most of us into caffeine consuming zombies. Despite our demanding schedules, the Zips here at SIUSDM have-as always-found time to get away from it all. To start off the semester, the Zips made a delicious dinner for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald house in St. Louis.

It was great to see how a simple homemade meal can brighten a family’s day. In April the Zips watched the Cardinals beat the Pirates at Busch stadium—GO CARDINALS! On April 12, the Spring ZIP Open was XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

held at Cloverleaf Golf Course. Over thirteen teams of golfers competed in the bi-annual ZIP event! Plenty of hamburgers and “Dickey Dogs” (hot dogs) were consumed along with multiple beverages! In May, members returned to the fairways to compete in the annual SIU-SDM Prophy Cup school fund-raiser. To celebrate the

completion of another tough year, the Zips attended the annual Senior Send-Off/Zip-Nic at Dr. Savoca’s lake house in Holiday Shores just outside Edwardsville, Illinois. We spent the day boating, skiing, and simply lounging out on the dock, reminiscing about the days we didn’t think we could survive and the days we made

each other laugh- it’s funny how these days were often one and the same. This semester may have tried to get the best of us, but it really goes to show how good company and a heavy dose of sunshine can get you through just about anything.

BETA XI CHAPTER Midwestern University Glendale. Arizona Founded 2011

ur two student members of Beta Xi Chapter @ Midwestern University, Glendale, AZ—Jacob Stadiem and Amanda Girardi Thank you again for everything you did for the Beta Xi chapter in San Francisco. Amanda and I were blown away by the amazing support and camaraderie we experienced at the Supreme Chapter meeting. I wanted to email you with a little bit of an update since the meeting.

Recruitment of the D1s and D2s has been going really well! We have secured the extremely outgoing current D1 class president as our VP for

next year. We have also had a ton of interest from the other students we have pinpointed as people we want as board members for next year. We just have a couple more students to talk to and then we will be ready to hold a meeting. Amanda and I have designed a summer tank (attached) for the new members to wear this summer and a before school rush pool party we will be throwing. We have to make sure the school will reimburse us from our account before we move forward with them.

Amanda and I have also set up our first volunteer activity at the Ronald McDonald House Heart and Sole walk. We hope to establish a connection for several more volunteer opportunities in the future.

Lastly, Amanda and I have been in contact with some of the faculty members at our school that we have recently found out are ZIPs members. Most importantly is the faculty member that taught you how to do a body shot, Dr. Leigh-Ann Schuerman. She seems very interested in helping us out and has a great personality for the fraternity. She was excited to hear you are still involved in ZIPs and I gave her your information to get in touch with you!

Dugoni’s tenure at the dental school started in 1951 when he became assistant professor of operative dentistry. He has held several faculty positions, including professor and chair of the Department of Orthodontics. He pioneered the primary and mixed dentition orthodontic clinic at the University of the Pacific in 1963, which continues to operate under the direction of his son, Dr. Steven A. Dugoni, associate professor in the Department of Orthodontics. He also maintained a private orthodontic practice in South San Francisco for nearly 40 years, until 1987.

Throughout his career, Dugoni has received countless awards and citations. He was elected to the prestigious FDI World Dental Federation List of Honor in 1998, which is limited to 30 individuals worldwide, and recently received the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He has also been awarded the honor of Dental Alumnus of the Year by four universities: Gonzaga University, University of Washington, University of San Francisco and University of the Pacific. Dugoni has presented more than 1,000 lectures, papers, clinics and essays and is the author of more than 175 published articles.

He and his wife, Katherine, reside in the Bay Area and have seven children and 15 grandchildren.

have taken the dental school to its current level of national prominence, including the enhancement of the humanistic model of education. “At Pacific we build people, and along the way they become doctors,” is one of Dugoni’s famous mantras.

Although Dugoni concluded his deanship in 2006, he continues to be involved with the school and the university as dean emeritus, professor of orthodontics and senior executive for development.

“My involvement with the university is special and unique,” stated Dugoni. “I’ve had the opportunity to help build a dental school that is different than any other, one that is built on the premise that we are not only educating dentists but developing people. Our entire reason for existence is to create an environment

A

n exemplary educator, practitioner and leader, Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni served as dean of the dental school from 1978–2006 and is one of the most respected figures in the dental profession. In 2004, he became the first and only person in the United States or Canada to have a dental school named in his honor while holding the position of dean.

Throughout his career, Dugoni has held numerous leadership positions in organized dentistry and has served as president of the American Dental Association, the American Dental Education Association, the American Dental Association Foundation, the XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

American Board of Orthodontics and the California Dental Association.

Dugoni was a member of the Council of the FDI World Dental Federation for nine years and served as treasurer and member of the FDI Executive Committee for six years.

In 1978, he took the helm as dean of the dental school, 30 years following his graduation as valedictorian and student body president of the College of Physicians & Surgeons (forerunner to the University of the Pacific). During his 28 years as dean, Dugoni was credited with developing and managing many innovations that

r. Randy A. Parmlee is a South Bend, Indiana native who moved to Illinois to attend college and stayed in the area.

He received his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, and earned his DMD degree in 1990 from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine Dr. Randy Parmlee in Alton, Illinois. While at SIUSDM, Randy was active in Beta Mu chapter of Xi Psi Phi. He served as a student delegate Province 2 to the Supreme Chapter Board of Director’s Centennial meeting in Memphis, Tennessee in 1989.

Professional Memberships include the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society, and St Clair District Dental Society, where he served as President.

He serviced as chair of the Illinois State Dental Society committee on Dental Education, and also served on the Board for the SIU-SDM Alumni Council. Randy has been an active leader in Give Kids A Smile program, working as Chair of the Madison District and St. Clair District Dental Societies and SIU-CDM’s “Give Kids A Smile” program.

He is in private general dental practice in Mascoutah, Illinois. He has one married daughter, Carolyn and three grandchildren who live in Wisconsin. He and his partner Patricia (Pat) Boehm live in the country near Troy, Illinois, where he has room to practice his golf game, play tennis, and swim with his grand children. Besides playing golf, Randy enjoys boating with family and friends on the Mississippi River and at his lakeside cottage in Michigan.

received a certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from New York University in 2002.

He was active in Xi Psi Phi and served as President of Beta Zeta Chapter from 1996–1999. He also received the Outstanding College Chapter President Award in 1998.

He was on the Deans’ list for four years of undergraduate work at Rutgers University and was on the Dean’s list in dental School, where he was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon honorary dental society.

Professional memberships include the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, New Jersey Dental Association, Monmouth-Oceanside Dental Society, The American Association of Endodontics and Gamma Pi Prosthodontics Society. He is also a member of the UNICO Italian American Service Organization and the Italian American Dental Society.

Fabio has been identified among the top dentists in New Jersey in the New Jersey Monthly Magazine for multiple years. He maintains an endodontic practice in Ocean, Freehold, and Red Bank, New Jersey. He enjoys playing soccer, computer technology and is an avid ice hokey fan.

He and his wife, Rose live in Freehold New jersey with their beautiful twin daughters, Isabella and Olivia.

ANDREA CARVALHO Province III Chair

r. Andrea L. Carvalho received her honors Bachelor of Arts in French Language and Literature and Bachelor of Education from Western University.

Subsequently, she completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Toronto in 2000. Presently, she is a clinical instructor at the Faculty of Dr. Andrea Carvalho Dentistry, University of Toronto, while maintaining an Associate position in private, general practice.

Not only is she a dentist and a teacher but also a daughter, sister, wife and mother. Her interests include reading, travelling, photography and scrap booking.

Dr. Carvalho is not simply defined by her profession but by all aspects of her life. She is definitely a dentist who can make you laugh without the gas. She credits her impressive demeanor, great chair side manner and incredible sense of humor to her biggest and most brilliant accomplishments in her life- her three beautiful children.
