Supreme President 2014–2015 Hello Fellow “ZIPS”:

I

hope the New Year finds all of you in good health and in good spirits. The holiday season is hectic but also is one of the best times of the year. I always reflect on the good fortune in my life. We are all blessed as members of the greatest profession and share the comradery, friendship, guidance and leadership of ZIP membership. We relish the memories of friendships forged with the local chapter during dental school year. Those friendships will last a lifetime. The participation of ZIP Alumni during dental school was important. Dental school was a four- year grind brightened by our Fraternity Alumni, who spent their time as consultants, providing encouragement and positive thoughts about our chosen profession. In accordance with this thought process, I encourage all ZIPS to become involved in their local or nearby chapters. Participation in a chapter event is especially meaningful to the students. We all remember talking to a Graduate ZIP and hearing the examples of how dentistry is rewarding both professionally and personally. All of us have busy lives, and if you are not able to physically participate, how about a ZIP gesture; sponsoring food for a chapter meeting is just one option. We can all recall how much we appreciated “free” pizza at a chapter meeting that was sponsored by a thoughtful Alumnus or two. Such gestures reinforce great ZIP traditions. I also encourage all members of our Fraternity to increase their

monetary contributions to the Hospitality level of donation. Economic times for organizations such as Xi Psi Phi are becoming increasingly difficult. For example, cutbacks in student assemblies and networking may be necessitated. Think of how our Fraternity has made a difference in your life. Our profession has allowed us to spend money on discretionDr. Randy Parmlee ary items (i.e., golf clubs, fishing gear, spa treatments, nice vacations, etc.) As a group, let us give a little more to help make Xi Psi Phi become a more stable and successful organization. We truly need both your financial and supportive help. NOW is the time to STEP UP and DO YOUR PART as others did for you. I know we will STAND UP AS ZIPS TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE. s you can see, the transition to a new format has been successful. The Quarterly is now available in a full color print form as well as a full color pdf posted on our new website. In the last issue I announced a photo competition for the cover of the publication. So far there have been no submissions. Credit for this issue’s cover goes to UMKC for their photo of Dr. John Haynes in whose memory this issue is dedicated. The rules for the competition are simple: 1. This is open to any member (student or alumni). 2. The photo must be a high resolution, vertical format, and digital jpeg image. 3. The photo should depict some aspect of the fraternity life. (This could be activities, functions, individuals, groups, awards, etc.) 4. This must be something of interest to the fraternity as a whole.

5. The Supreme Editor will make the final decision on selection and publication. 6. The picture must be original and not previously published. A statement to confirm this must accompany the entry. 7. The deadline for possible inclusion is the same as the regular Quarterly deadlines of December 1 and May 1. If the photo is Carl L. Sebelius, Jr. selected for publication the author will receive credit in the publication.

Joseph J. Schwarz DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD NOMINATION PROCEDURE Purpose The purpose of the Distinguished Alumni Award is to provide recognition for the outstanding achievements of alumni of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity. Eligibility for Award Only living alumni of Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity are eligible. For purposes of definition, an alumnus/a is any person who was regularly initiated in Xi Psi Phi Fraternity, and completed a dental degree.   The nominee shall be outstanding and noteworthy in the dental profession.   The nominee shall have made significant contributions benefiting his/her community, state or nation and the profession of dentistry   The nominee shall exhibit interest in the Supreme Chapter of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity since leaving dental school. Nature of the Award The award shall consist of a plaque.

Nominations Nominations may be submitted by: Any member of the Supreme Chapter of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity.   All nominations must be in writing and should be accompanied by complete biographical information.   Regular nomination forms should be used and may be secured from the Supreme Chapter Office of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity.   Nominations should be postmarked no later than December 31 to be considered for an award the following Supreme Chapter Board of Directors meeting.   All nominations should be addressed to: Chairman, Awards and Honorary Member Committee, c/o Supreme Chapter Office, Xi Psi Phi Fraternity. Presentation of Award The Award shall be presented during the activities at the Board of Directors meeting or other appropriate gathering of members (i.e. ADA Hospitality Reception, etc.).

In Memory of John I. Haynes, D.D.S. September 23, 1934–July 23, 2014

J

ohn I. Haynes, D.D.S., 79, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Dr. Haynes received his Bachelor’s degree in 1956 and his DDS degree in 1960—both from the University of Kansas City, and his M.A. in Education in 1971 from UMKC. John married the love of his life, Judy, in 1961. Dr. Haynes began a career at the UMKC School of Dentistry in 1962 that spanned more than 50 years. He rose through the ranks to become Chairman, Pediatric Dentistry in 1992 and held that position until 2010. John then served as School of Dentistry Alumni/Student Ambassador from 2010 until his retirement in 2012, at which time he received the rank of Professor Emeritus. John’s love of the UMKC School of Dentistry and its students and alumni cannot be overstated. He taught or trained more than 8,000 students during his academic career. Dr. Haynes was active in the Dental Alumni Association for decades. He chaired numerous committees, hosted countless alumni receptions, founded the Recent Graduate Committee, and served as the Association’s President in 1988. John held local and national roles in the Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity, where he served as Chi Chapter Advisor for more than 40 years and held the national office of Supreme President in 1984. He was also active in Omicron Kappa Upsilon (Rho Chapter), a dental honor society, and served as its president in 19711972. John enjoyed organizing dental alumni and student gatherings at Kansas City Royals Opening Day Baseball Games for more than 25 years. Dr. Haynes was elected as a Fellow in the American College of Dentists in 1987 and subsequently held various offices in that organization, including that of President in 2003-2004. He was also active in the American Dental Inter-Fraternity Council and the KC Association of Pediatric Dentists. John received the UMKC Alumni Service Award in 1985 and was recognized as the UMKC Dental Alumni Association Alumnus of the Year in 1993. He was the recipient of the Elmer F. Pierson Excellence in Teaching Awarded in 2000. In 2004, John was named UMKC Alumnus of the Year.

Dr. Haynes was a member of the Christ the King Parish Council and recently became active in the Serra Club. During his life, he was active in the Special Olympics/ Special Smiles program, Knights of Columbus, and the Optimist Club. Survivors include his wife of nearly 53 years, Judy Haynes; two children: John (Jackie) Haynes, II of Lansdale, PA, and Karen E. Haynes of KCMO; one grandson, Daniel of Lansdale, PA; and nieces & nephews. This is a summary of emails that the Supreme Chapter Office of Xi Psi Phi received upon learning of John Haynes’s passing. Troy Jones Thank you so much for keeping us up to date. I am still in shock, as is everyone. After seeing him in April, I was not aware of any illness. The Zips have lost a great leader and a great friend. I always enjoyed visiting with him at the Board meetings. Please give Stacey and my condolences to Judy. XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

Matt Niewald Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. I hope to hear by early afternoon details regarding arrangements. I will make sure to pass along the information as soon as i have it through Keith. It looks like the funeral will most likely be early to mid-week. John’s family wanted to make sure they allowed enough time so that John’s out of town “family” would have the opportunity to pay their respects if they so choose. I had a very consoling conversation with John’s daughter yesterday, and I would be remiss if I did not pass along their gratitude to John’s fraternity family. They are doing ok considering the circumstances, and are grateful that John is in a better place planning the next social event. If anyone who might be traveling to Kansas City for the funeral and needs assistance in finding accommodations, Keith and i will provide info later today. Again, I can’t thank all of you enough for your outpouring of support and kind thoughts. John taught us all a lot about life and friendship. One of many people John impacted posted on facebook a quote by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell “To live in Hearts we leave behind, is not to die,’’ which is an appropriate testimony to how John impacted all of us and so many others and the legacy he leaves behind. Steve Weingarten Fern and I are heartbroken after hearing of John’s passing. We can’t put in words how sad we are for Judy, Karen, and John Jr. He will be missed. Fern and Steve Jean Schwarz I am so sorry to learn about John’s problems and eventual death. He was truly an extraordinary human being and I will miss him. My heart goes out to his family. Jean Tom Bonomo I met John 30 years ago and have been friends ever since. He was kind, compassionate, empathetic; a true Catholic gentleman. Lorrie and I loved him. A great loss to dentistry and the Fraternity.

Please call when you have a chance if you are up to it. It is times like this when our Fraternal Organization becomes an ever so important aspect of our lives. This has really hit the UMKC and Zip community hard. John was a mentor to so many, but more importantly, a true friend to even more. His smile and dedication to his work, family and fraternity can never be replicated and I’m not sure I’ve ever known a person who cast such a lasting legacy on so many people. Estate Planning — Giving Back to Xi Psi Phi Foundation Your will is the easiest, most effective way to ensure that your family, friends and the Xi Psi Phi Foundation are supported as you intend. Sample bequest language is “I give, devise and bequeath (written amount, percentage of estate or description of property) to the Xi Psi Phi Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation with principal offices located at 160 S. Bellwood Drive, Suite Z, East Alton, Illinois, 62024, to be used for the purposes designated by the Directors of the Foundation.” Supporting the Xi Psi Phi Foundation with a portion of your estate does not always require a will. Here are some other options for you to consider: Life Insurance: Name the Xi Psi Phi Foundation as owner and beneficiary of a policy you no longer need, or a policy written for the purpose of a charitable gift. The gift will take place outside of probate, the often time-consuming and costly process of determining the validity of a will and administering the estate. Retirement Plan: Give the Xi Psi Phi Foundation a portion or all of your IRA, 401(k), Keough or other retirement plan fund from your estate. These types of assets, when used a charitable gifts, avoid income and estate taxes; all that is required is signing the right form, and no probate is involved. Payable-upon-Death Account: Leave checking accounts, savings accounts, saving bonds and other deposit certificates to the Xi Psi Phi Foundation. The gift can be easily accomplished by simply filling out the appropriate form; the asset will be transferred at your death. Your attorney, tax professional or financial advisor can provide details about other ways to support the Xi Psi Phi Foundation outside of your will. Your thoughtful planning leaves a legacy to inspire the future members of Xi Psi Phi. A

s a new academic year began, we welcomed in a new class of D1’s and a number of new ZIPS members. We held an initiation for our new members at The Original Cottage Inn, where the new members received their pins and got to meet returning members. Earlier in the summer, we celebrated Christmas in July where everyone pulled out their ugly sweaters, baked cookies, and caught up. As the semester progressed, many lunch events were coordinated for

both new and existing members. D1’s had the option of coming to a semester preview, where the D2’s and D3’s gave insight into what to expect both in the summer and fall semester courses. Additionally, D3’s took time during lunch to give D2’s some advice on taking the NBDE Part 1 exam, study tips and recommended resources. There was also a Pathways Panel, in which D1’s were told about the Pathways Program, which is unique to the University of Michigan, and shared personal experiences with each of the three Pathways- Research, Leadership, and Health Care Delivery. A group of ZIPS members also made a trip out to Plymouth Apple Orchard to get the full Michigan fall

experience, complete with cider and donuts. Other events included our tradition of ThAC (Thursday after class) where members are invited to meet up at a local bar to unwind and socialize, as well as a Class III Cavity Preparation Help session for D1’s. As in the past, prior to practicals for D1’s and D2’s, treats and words of encouragement were left for members in their lockers. Prior to Thanksgiving break, we held our annual Friendsgiving event, complete with a turkey and a feast of dishes to pass. Closing out the semester, we have Secret Santa and a Christmas Party planned to celebrate the holiday season. This semester has been full

of new memories and friends, a lot of learning, and we look forward to much more in the future. Natalia Radzikowski Alpha Chapter Secretary

BETA CHAPTER New York University New York, New York Founded 1893

T

he fall semester of the Beta Chapter at NYU College of Dentistry has been a busy one. We started the semester striving to help our brothers succeed clinically with D1 tutorials on tooth preparations and D2 tutorials on periodontal instrumentation and crown preparations. The tutorials were enhanced by the presence of ZIP’s faculty and upperclassmen who assisted with critiques and demonstrations. Throughout the semester we promoted ZIP’s through many bake sales. The most popular of them all was during the week of Halloween where we sold homemade Dracula cookies, candy corn fudge, witch hat chocolate treats and Frankenstein rice kripsies. The event was largely successful in promoting the fraternity as well as a great fundraising opportunity. Another recruitment event we did was a 3D nametag tooth stickers and gold tooth pins sale to place on our white coats.

Additionally, during the semester we held numerous lunch and learns. One was even held by our very own ZIP’s faculty, Dr. Vernice. Dr. Vernice spoke about how to succeed in life during dental school and beyond, while including his expertise on Forensic Dentistry. These academic and clinical events were followed up by social activities where we could unwind and get to know other ZIPs faculty and members. The social events included one with alumni, Dr. Yen, the founder of the Beta Chapter, and a mixer at Barcade with the Columbia University Alpha Tau Chapter.

A new website for the Beta Chapter was also constructed where the following information could be found: recruitment information, upcoming events, message from our President, photos linking our website to social media and a specific members only tab with study materials. Future upcoming events include our annual Chinatown health fair where members gave oral hygiene instruction and distributed toothbrushes and flossers. Furthermore, an ice skating social event and a winter bake sale are in the process of being planned for the Spring semester. Another upcoming plan is to

things when classes began again in September 2014! Our Country Western BBQ Party was a held during Welcome Week. Burgers, beer, and country music were enjoyed by all of our returning brothers and sisters, as well as the new first year class. It was a great opportunity for new potential Zippers to mingle with our existing family and be introduced to our awesome fraternity. Evidently it was a huge success, as Omicron Chapter rounded up a record-breaking number of 271 members this year, yee-haw! September was also the month for our annual Initiation Day. The beautiful weather made for a fun filled day of games as our new members provided pledges with an orientation of

Not only does Omicron Chapter host the best social events of the year, we also provide our members with academic sessions and mentorship. Each class prepares a ZIP Study Package that provides notes, hints, and tips for the class under them. We also help students with the more difficult courses and tests by preparing mock examinations and review sessions, some of which are provided by ZIP Alumni who often commute from out of town to help our students. Talk about spirit! Our fourth years also have the benefit of attending many seminars dedicated specifically to them, on many interesting topics such as implant therapy, oral surgery instrumentation and techniques, and financial planning, just to name a few. More exciting seminars are planned for 2015. Omicron Chapter also looks beyond the classroom to provide to those in the community. Our annual Charity Poker Tournament was held in November, 2014, and is one of a few fundraising events that we hold for our chosen charity, Ronald McDonald House. We love to show our support for the Ronald McDonald house and its families in as many ways as possible, and our members XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

will be dedicating more of their time to this great cause as the year progresses. Last but certainly not least, the anticipation is growing for our annual ZIP Formal, which will be held on January 17th, 2015! This year, to commemorate the fraternity’s 125 year anniversary, we are planning something special! ZIP Omicron has made an effort to contact and invite as many alumni as possible, and host a special weekend for alumni consisting of two CE courses followed by a grand night at the Formal. Fraternity members, alumni, and all guests will gather for a classy evening of dinner, dancing, and presentation of the Omicron Chapter Awards. 2014 saw over 350 guests in attendance at the ZIP Formal, so we are eagerly awaiting another epic night to come! Through social, academic, and philanthropic events, Omicron Chapter provides the best student experience at the University of Toronto. We would like to thank all the members and alumni whose hard work and dedication make these events possible! 2014 has been a memorable year and we look forward to the many new and exciting events planned for 2015!

This year we met up with our NYU ZIP neighbors at a popular venue, Barcade! We also attended our school’s Halloween Party. We love to have brunches after community service events. And coming up, we have our annual Holiday Party! We look forward to the rest of the year as we continue our academic journey with our ZIPS family!

BETA LAMBDA CHAPTER University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio San Antonio, Texas Founded 1974

he Beta Lambda chapter of Xi Psi Phi aims to promote academic achievement, success, and diversity in our members. At the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, we provide opportunities for service, mentorship, and community involvement. This semester, we hosted a booth at the school’s Welcome to the Profession ceremony and helped give tours of the campus to new students and their families. We provide tutoring and mentorship for the DS1 and DS2 members in classes such as Histology and Dental Anatomy. We also host annual rush events for the incoming first years, including a meet-and-greet happy hour in downtown San Antonio, as well as a river float along the Guadalupe River. These are great opportunities to promote inter-class friendships and give us a chance to get to know each other outside of the school setting. ZIPs hosts a university-wide Halloween party event each year that is great for meeting other professional students at UTHSCSA. We recently participated in a community event called Dentistry from the Heart where we provided free treatment to over 150 people in San Antonio. We are looking forward to next semester when we will get to team up with our ASDA chapter to participate in Habitat for Humanity.

he University of Tennessee College of Dentistry Xi Psi Phi chapter celebrated another successful semester this fall. After sending off our seniors in May the summer was upon us and everyone’s plans for the break were as diverse as our membership itself. One particular group of 9 ZIPs embarked on a

journey to Quito, Ecuador with 10 other students from the UT College of Dentistry to provide dental care to the people of the Calderon district. This trip was organized by our campus BCM as a part of SIFAT’s Ministry in Ecuador and provided the opportunity to see what our skills as dentists can do to make a positive impact in the lives of people who have very little access to care. The fall semester came quickly and we were happy to welcome the Class of 2018 to our campus. We started the 2014-15 school year off with a rush week unlike any other. Dedicated to giving our rushees a true taste of Memphis, our first stop was a meetand-greet at Jerry Lee Lewis’ Café located on world-famous Beale Street.

After getting to know everyone, ZIPs nation invited our new friends out to a formal affair at Flight Restaurant & Wine Bar. This cocktail evening is one of our personal favorites because not only do our rushees enjoy a nice night on the town, but our faculty Xi Psi Phi members also join us: Drs. J. Stansill Covington and Lawrence Weeda. Finally, we wrapped up our 2014 Rush Week with our fall tradition: ZIPs Flip Cup Tournament. Everyone from reigning champions to amateur flippers showed up in force. We take great pride in being a part of the illustrious ZIPs nation, and this year was no different; we had strong rush class with 37 new initiates holding our membership numbers at a solid 180 members for the second year in a row!

After finishing up another rush week, our membership was launched into a busy semester of classwork, labs, and clinic. Our annual Halloween party was a great mid semester event to let everyone relax for an evening and scare away the daily stresses of dental school. The calendar year wrapped up with a Tacky Sweater holiday party on Beale Street that was open to the entire student body and as always, provided many laughs, great memories, and awkward photo ops. There is much excitement still to come in the spring semester when we officially welcome our new initiates with our annual initiation event on the mighty Mississippi River!

he Beta Mu chapter at Southern Illinois University kicked off the fall semester with a Superhero themed Rush Week- “Xi Psi Phi- Saving the World One Tooth at a Time”. With customary Beta Mu fanfare, our rush lunch featured a cinema-themed setting with some comic book flair. From a custom Zip movie trailer featuring our traditional events, to fresh popped popcorn, movie candy, and decorations that echoed our enthusiasm, our theme really said “BANG”, “BOOM”, and “POW”. idwestern University-AZ is looking to expand and strengthen its roots in Glendale, AZ, with this year’s new recruiting class, under the leadership of third-year dental student Amanda Girardi. Having gathered a large amount of attention at the beginning of the year during both orientation and club weeks, the Beta Xi Chapter has successfully enrolled nearly 60 new members currently, including designating a D1 Representative in first-year dental student Zoran Bundalo. Having held recruitment events such as “Zips at Zipps,” a “Beta Xi

Pledge Party,” and a “Ronald McDonald House Cleaning Supply Drive,” the group is looking to bolster its presence here in the desert. In an effort to best exemplify the “hospitality is the life of friendship” motto, the MWU-AZ chapter conducted a “Family Bowling Night,” where all new members were organized into families, each under the leadership of a Beta Xi council member thanks to the Recruitment Committee. One of the largest goals of this reignited chapter is to plan, fundraise for, and embark upon an international volunteer trip to provide dental services to an underprivileged community. Expanding MWU’s healthcare outreach beyond the borders of Arizona is a significant goal of member Amber Schmidt, a council member recognized as the positive propagator of this service endeavor. The development of this potential international opportunity for student members over the next year or two will look toward visiting the Dominican Republic or Mexico. DR. LEIGHTON WIER OF SAN ANTONIO NAMED 2014 ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

T

he University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston Alumni Association has chosen San Antonio general dentist Leighton A. Wier, DDS, of the Class of 1968 as the 2014 Alumnus of the Year. Dr. Wier accepted the award from the 2013 winner, Austin dentist Jerry P. Katz, DDS, at the annual UTSD Alumni Round-Up Sept. 19 in the Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center. Over his 46-year career, he has been a leader in organized dentistry at every level, while helping raise a family and volunteering in support of dental education and the greater community. Dr. Wier is a past president of many organizations, including the International College of Dentists USA Section and Texas Section, the Texas Academy of General Dentistry and the San Antonio District Dental Society. He is a past vice president of the Texas Dental Association and was a founding board member of the TDA Foundation. He served on the TDA Council on Annual Session for seven years, and twice chaired the Annual Session. He is a trustee of the ICD Foundation and serves as an international Councilor. Dr. Wier is chair of the ICD-USA delegation. He is currently Supreme Editor Emeritus of Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity, an organization he served as Supreme President for two years and as Supreme Editor for 19 years. In 2013, he became the first recipient of Xi Psi Phi’s Joseph J. Swartz Outstanding Alumni Award, having already received the organization’s Hamilton Young Award for Meritorious Service in 1996. Dr. Wier has served on the Texas Dental Journal’s Editorial Advisory

He was a long-time member of the American Association of Dental Editors and has been editor of publications for the Texas Academy of Dental Practice Administration, Texas Academy of General Dentistry, San Antonio District Dental Society, and the Xi Psi Phi Quarterly. In 2000, TAGD named him Texas Dentist of the Year. “What a meaningful and unexpected honor from the school that gave me not only the knowledge and skills to make a living and serve my patients, but also provided me with the opportunity to meet my wife, as well as lifelong friends,” he said. “Through my leadership role in Xi Psi Phi’s Alpha Psi Chapter, I came to embrace the spirit of volunteerism and have supported and served those organizations I became involved with,” he said. Dr. Wier and his wife, Linda — a 1967 dental hygiene graduate of UT Dental Branch — have a family that now includes sons Matt Wier and Brad Wier, daughter Mary Beth Ferguson, son-in-law Charles Ferguson, and granddaughters Leighton and Georgia Ferguson.

Dr. Dickey has held all offices of the Madison District Dental Society and served nationall on the ADA Council of Ethis, Bylaws, and Judicial Affairs. Presently, he is a national consultant to the ADA Commission on Dental Education and Allied Health Education. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and

only as a practitioner, but also as an educator and dean of University of Pacific dental school, which was named in his honor as the Arthur A Dugoni School of Dentistry. He is one of the most respected figures in dentistry and has served numerous leadership positions in organized dentistry, including serving as president of the American Dental Association. Dr. Dugoni graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons(forerunner to University of the Pacific) and 30 years later became the dean of the dental school. Throughout his career, D. Dugoni has received countless awards, presented more than 1,000 lectures, papers, clinics and essays and is the author of more than 175 published articles. He and his wife, Katherine, reside in the Bay Area and have seven children and 15 grandchildren.

Block School of Business and Public Administration, University of Missouri at Kansas City; and his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the School of Dentistry of The University of Missouri at Kansas City. He served as President of the Alumni Governing Board from 1995 to 1997. He was a community trustee on the University of Kansas City Trustee Board during his tenure as alumni president. Professionally, he is a member of the American Dental Association, Missouri Dental Association, Greater Kansas City Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Kansas City Dental Society from 1996 to 1998 and in 2002. He has also served as an alternate-delegate and delegate to the Missouri Dental Association House of Delegates from 2001 to 2007 and has been elected as a member of the GKCDS Delegation to the ADA House of Delegates for 2007 and 2008. He served as President of the Greater Kansas City Dental Society in 2005. In March of 2006 at the Midwest Dental Conference, the UMKC School of Dentistry presented Dr Nelson with the Rinehart Medallion for philanthropy and in 2010 he was presented the Rinehart Medallion for Service after serving as President of the UMKC School of Dentistry Alumni Association.
