01. FOOD CENTERNISM Small Intervention Design in Communities

The livability of the city is once again in the limelight of the world. The project takes Dunkirk as an example to improve this, this project mainly investigates into four aspects.

First of all, the lack of social activities is dealt with by transforming the vacant places into public space, viz. entertainment facilities, fundamental service, etc. Second of all, the fossil fuel consumption is highly related to the sustainability of the city and the environment. To alleviate the problem, the concept of food center, located dispersed in the city has been put forward. Third of all, the decentralized food system has been integrated, namely the integration of processing factories and food distribution centers. Finally, the food production is promoted to be localized in order to achieve the goal of self-sufficiency.

There are many vacant spaces in the communities we can make use of setting up the food centers. The food center would be constructed in a modular way with two functionalities. The space can be expanded depending on the demand of the community. It can be adaptive and flexible in the communities to form different spatial qualities in different size of space.

PROBLEM STATEMENT France is the largest food producer in the European Union and a major exporter of agricultural products around world. It accounts for one-third of Europe’s grain output. As for Dunkirk, most products are coming

from different regions within France or from other countries. Nonetheless, this complex logistic system for food supply can be troublesome.

•Granter: The project is initiated by the public sector authority which is responsible for infrastructure delivery. In this case study, it is the French or Northern French government.

•Regulator: The regulator is still public sector authority, designing the regulatory framework, issuing permits and licenses.

•Sponsors (investors): The pubic authority can be a project sponsor and other sponsors are contractors, suppliers and operators. The contractor is responsible for the construction work, which is public sector authority. The suppliers are twofold, for production of food, it is farmland. For delivery, it is logistics company and railway company. The operator is the enterprises.

•Purchaser: delivering the product to final clients, clients.

•Lenders: banks, institutional investors, investment funds, etc.

•Unions: Protecting labor sources •Media: Disseminating and gathering information •Ecologists: Protecting the environment •Residents: Citizens in Dunkirk

To be more specific, some actors in the scheme have more goals, compared to others.

To begin with, the regulator, i.e. the goverment has the aim to improve the social benefits as a whole, including the revenue of enterprises and the wellbeiing of citizens. The goverment should supervise the harmonious relation among all participants in the society.

Second of all, the suppliers should aim at accomplishing the self-sufficient cycle of this society. It should serve the city it at, as local supplier and then moving to provide the service for regional and global comsumer.

Then, the operators, viz. the enterprises is eyeing on the profitalbe operation. The ambitious is to win a competive position. The business should be scalble, it can be transferried easily to other cities and even elevated to larger scale.

Next important actor, the ecologists stand for the environment. Sustainability, recycle are the main purposes. Lastly, the objective of residents is livability. The convenience of accssing to the shops the price of the daily price are the priority.

Active modes would be promoted and the road congestion in the city will be relieved. The oil consumption will be saved alongside the logistics than e-business. The appearance of food centers will offer more interaction between people and food.

PROPOSED CITY FOOD SYSTEM As demonstrated in the drawing, there are six actors in total active food system and interact with each other in the city.

The food station is able to collect and dispatch the products transferred from processing and distribution center to food station, working as a transfer station. The products are allocated based on the order from food center. The sustainability takes a role here. Residents can turn to active modes like walking or cycling. This will save remarkable amount of energy. Thus, when comparing the amount of saving and consuming, the aspiration of construction can be testified.

The government will be the promoter of the project who initiates it and then cooperates with the operators of supermarkets. The government will intent to increase the total social benefits and therefore will sponsor the project at beginning. There should always be an agreement between government and operators.

If the business makes certain fortune, the revenues will be given back to government proportionally.

Department of sanitary will collect the food waste outside the individual houses and collect the recyclable wastes in food centers. By using the same truck, waste is transported to the recycle harbour.

Raw meterial would be first processed and packed in suburb area and then through railway delivered to the food station. Specific trucks are used to transport fresh food to food centers in communities.

02. TIDAL LANDSCAPE Leisure River Landscape Design

Location Rotterdam, Netherlands

The dutch landscape consists of a polder landscape, a cultivated landscape accommodating speicific water cities. Rotterdam situated in the Rhine- Meuse riverdelta of Europe is known as a large modern port city. The potential and function of the tiver for the city and inhabitants from a lerisure and ecological point of view are considered in this project.

In the first step, large systems in the metropolitan region are analysed in a bigger scale. Four main parts are divided in this part, blue, green, dike, city. After concluding the problems found in the bigger scale, I come to the mudium scale, more focus is put on the area along the tiver near the city center. The space along the river should be well-considered to create an attractive recreational landscape.

In the end, my design vision will be three parts, connect the urban green spaces, create urban waterfront openspaces and also create the evological tidal park.

There is a clear difference in characteristic between the north and south sides of the river. On the north side, there are many canals linking to the inner polder system. While on the south side, no canals are existed to the land.

Three kinds of edges can be identified in the area. Semi-hard edges are mostly used on both sides of the river, especially in the harbors. Soft edges can only be found on the east side primarily used on the tidal islands.

Because of rising sea level, the existing dike cannot stay stable to protect the inner city. In 2100, there are some parts of dikes on the north side being weak. So solution has to be done to these weanknesses. On the south side, industrial area between the river and dike can be the flood plain to contain extra water, so the dike can still be firm.

There are not enough existing green spaces along the river, with only two existing tidal islands, one in our site. Bird imgration happens among different green spaces in the area, such as the route from the park on the north side to the farm on the south side. So more green spaces should be added on the imagration route in order to provide more areas for birds to stay and increase the biodiversity.

Three roads and two channels link the north and south parts.

Besides the ground transportation, water transportation is also convenient in the area, which focuses on the middle part near the center of Rotterdam.

REGIONAL VISION Dike

The first vision is the dike reinforcement. We figured out three differnt ways related to their locations, ecolgical and in-between ecological and urban way which means heighen or widen the existing dike. The main idea is to combine the surrounding potential area to make a continuous tidal park to pretect the dike at the back.

Harbor

The second one is the building blocks in the harbors also using three ways related to their locations. Urban tidal parks can be built near the city center, while ecolgocial tidal parks can be built connected to the existing green spaces in the city. People can enjoy experiencing the water in these area.

The third one is island. There are four existing islands in the area in different characteristics. We figured out some new places to put a new tidal island based on the

DESIGN VISION My design vision would be three parts.

First, create the connection among urban green spaces, using the walking path, so these spaces on both sides of the river can be more related.

Second, because of the existing residential buildings, it is necessary to create urban waterfront open spaces using different styles of edges where people can have many activities.

Third, by using the existing island creates the ecological tidal park where the biodiversity will increase, and also people can enjoy the natural spaces and tidal influences, Besides, sedimentation can be caught in this area.

EMBANKMENT DESIGN SEQUENCE Embankment are well-considered along the river Mass, near the residential area, there are two level walking paths. Edges use both soft and semi-hard methods. While on the west side, after designing a tidal park instead of the original open space, it becomes more public and recreational.

Soft edges are used on the island, using vegetation to purify the water and also increase the biodiversity.

Because of rising sea level, the existing bank is not enough for the future protection, so solution has to be considered.

As for the tidal influence, when there is a high tide, some small islands will be flooded. Because of this shape of island, there are some cut-outs where sediments will be left behind, people can experience the tidal influence in the area.

PROPOSED GREEN AND BLUE STRUCTURE

Our vision for Rotterdam is to take the transportational circularity and the green structure and expand this towards all the structural aspects of Rotterdam. Instead of dividing in center, above A20 and below river we introduce the city center, recreational ring, ecological ring and agricultural ring.

VISION

The circular structure consists out of four rings: an urban centre, a recreational ring, an ecological ring and an agricultural ring. The appearance and main goal of the different elements of the green, blue and densification structure are based on their location within these rings.

The urban centre has small patches of green which are mainly focused on their recreational purpose. The green spaces in the recreational ring are either big city parks, also focusing on recreation. In the ecological ring, the green mainly consists of forest areas. The green in the agricultural ring is functional and intended for food production.

The New Maas is located in the urban centre and enters the city through singels, which are for recreation and cooling. The singels flow through the recreational area, where they are also used for recreation. In the ecological circle, water is mainly used for ecological purposes. Here also some big retention lakes are located.

The site is located at the birthplace of the ancient Chinese Silk Road, Guangzhou, Nansha. There are two remaining quarries at the site, with a high elevation difference. As a product of the urban industrial development, the quarry pit is a threat to the environment nowadays. Residents used to live near the quarry harmoniously, relying on mining for a living, but with the changing times, the decline of industry led to mine pits being abandoned, with the quarry pits becoming a waste landfill site.

In this project, I try to repair the mine pits and restore the natural ecology. In the design process, I reduce the destruction of the original terrain as much as possible, and in the original terrain, I adopt some minor adjustments are adopted at the site, using ecological restoration strategies and methods, such as slope stablization and soil improvement.

Considering the fact that there are other quarry pits around, I try to use a series of streamlines to connect several quarry areas, so that the whole area can become a whole, and lead to the comprehensive development of the quarry.

05. SKYWALL Landscape Deisgn of Nanjing City Wall

City walls were used as a defense facilities in the history, and they are more a part of the city landscape in the modern life. After years of historical changes, the existing city walls of Nanjing are not continuousand and have become into parts.

My design philosophy is to preserve the shape and continuity of the wall, with the design being a part of the wall. In the existing wall ruins, creating a public path in a series leading from the whole system can arouse the activites that take place around the wall, and can reshape a path of dialogue with history. Both the path and city wall will become part of the "community", in a light, transparent way compared to previous massive wall, which can increase the city's interface diversity.

This public path is not only a path of connection with history, but also a combination of the rich landscape resources in the surrounding environment and the facilities, which have different functions. This path will not only meet the needs of modern people for recreation, but will also ensure the modern cultural value of the city wall.

06. BETWEEN GARDENS Entrance Plaza of Qinghui Garden Design

Qinghui Garden is one of the four most famous Chinese Garden in South China, located in Shunde, Guangdong. There is a busy commercial street, a hill and a traditional village near the garden.

And the site is considered as an entrance of Qinghui garden. In the original entrance plaza, there is an octagonal pool and also many of historic old trees, which I will preserve in my design.

In this project, I want to show the spirit of the Lingnan garden—— shallow the space before people enter the actual garden and create gardens in the sequence of entering. I start with the characteristic Lingnan Garden and create a streamlined series of gardens, thereby producing the a particular atmosphere at the entrance to the Qinghui Garden. When rambling in this space, visitors will have a feeling of the features of Lingnan Garden.

Qinghui garden uses stones and pedestal to decorate the patio and enhance the sight of landscape content. In my entrance plaza dsign, these elements are used in different gardens to be compared to those in Qinghui garden.

Sunshine, that the indispensable resource of human life, is scarce in the urban village, with high density buildings, leaving only the light from the top of the alley. In this workshop, we try to understand the urban village using a "bootom-up" strategy to learn from the villagers and their wisdom, and to discover the stories behind the ordinary life.

The method of drying clothes was quite special in Longdong urban village. In the streets, the self-built drying rods were everywhere, and some of the residents even dried their clothes on the wires, which was mainly caused by the inevitable spatial contradiction between immigrants(tenants) and landlords(villagers). To fight for more sunshine to dry their clothes, they developed their own wisdom and strategies in their daily lives.

When we go through the streets and alleys of the urban village, we seem to be experiencing the rotation of two worlds of light and darkness. However, no matter how much life there is, their desire for sunshine remains strong. Through the regular patterns and logic of this "chaos" and "informality," we can creat strategies for today's cities or provide a complementary way of conducting government.

In today's society, the source of information is abundant, while television is no longer the only source of information in people's lives.

To a certain extent, television is widely affecting people's emotions, behavior and communication patterns, and has become an integral aspect part of people's daily lives. TV itself has become a mirror, reflecting the people's lives.

On the scale of the city, TV networks and interpersonal networks in the village in the urban villages have an isomorphic relation. Old television’s analog signal network and linear network signal are interweave here, and the ends of these cables have become a stronghold of the village neighborhood. People carry out various active or passive communicative activities around the TV. Television also reveals many interesting interplays between other objects in people's rooms. In different communication activities, television occupies different ways of spaces, and plays different roles in the corresponding scene of life.

In this mapping research, we hope to use television as a mirror to examine the real lives of the people in the village, and to explain the complex relationships in the living settlement of Nantou Old Town urban village.

09. CITY LAB Environment Renovation and Reconstruction

The site is located on the west side of Haizhu Lake on the central axis of Guangzhou, close to a buffer zone in the core area of the National Ecological Haizhu Wetland. Based on the existing good water network and green spaces, there is also an ecological corridor crossing the site. The land has recevied strict construction control and the location is not suitable to its ecological position, which result in an opportunity for renovation and renewal. In 2020, the design plans to transform the textile industry into a green industrial dominated by urban agriculture. The purpose is to introduce ecological landscape into the city where citizens can experience and have education inside.

The waste from wetland and urban farming can be transported in the ecological substrate factory in order to realize the material circulation.

There is a landscape sequence after entering the site from the main entrance to the north, first through the public building group symbolizing the mountain, followed by the stream. Densely planted fruit forest is next stage. The urban farm is created for citizens to experience food production and finally people can reach the ecological bank with water purification.

SITE LOCATION

The site is located on the city central axis and next to the national ecological Haizhu wetland transforming into a buffer zone.

MATERIAL CIRCULATION The ecological substrate factory in the site accepts the biological sludge and plant waste transported from the Haizhu Wetland Park on the east side of the site. After the substrate treatment, the products are supplied to the green industry.

The sales of the green industry are fed back to the ecological substrate factory to maintain operations.

10. THE CUBE Campus Library Design

The site is located on the central axis of the South China University of Technology, where I want to keep the east-west axis and northsouth axis. Combining with the large square near the east side, the front area of the site is left out open to be public. A new axis is formed, on which the main part of the building is divided and the spaces are divided based on the axes.

The whole library alternates between virtual and real, producing rich architectural shapes. The interior of the building is also divided by the original east-west and north-south axis and the newly added axis as well. These axes can help to shape different characteristics of spaces. The project is to inherit the idea of public learning atmosphere of university library. With the incresing stories in the building, the inner reading room is transited from open to closed.

This competition is titled " Modular Wooden Installation Cluster Design for Exhibition", and our project emphasizes the space experience and the formation of exhibition inside and outside the sketch. Therefore, we create a changeable active atmosphere for the exhibition. When people view exhibitions inside, they themselves become exhibits from the outside. The appearance seems to be normal, while the inner atmosphere is flowing. The streamline seems like an invisible wave, guiding people to go forward.

The whole process of construction is experienced in different stages that cover the following activities, design-deepen-purchase material-process-assemble-build. By constructing the modular production and final superposition, the whole work is finished. In fact, the construction experiment is similar to the actual architecture production process. It involves discussing the structure, structural logic, and experiencing the manual operation, machine production and fabrication process.

This is a construction project in a village named Xiangnianxi in Conghua. In response to the needs of local farmers, we were asked to build a small pavilion near the farmland that could provide a shelter for farmers in the rainy season . This village is known to be a place of beautiful scenery and green bamboo, surrounded by terraced farmland. According to the local traditions, we used bamboo as a raw material and used conventional crafts taught by local craftsmen to process the bamboo. The skill of processing the bamboo, such as manufacturing of bamboo tiles, and nails, has been passed down from generation to generation.

Throughout the whole process of construction, we communicated with the local villagers for many times and designed with their actual needs in mind. At the same time, we also realized the possibility of bamboo as an actual building material and carried out continuous experiments and practices to guarantee the safety of the construction.
