After three years here at the University of Arkansas, I can easily say that being a member of Kappa Sigma has been the most important experience of my life. My freshman year, I quickly found a home where I was able to meet guys from all different backgrounds and upbringings while building lifelong relationships. The long legacy of Kappa Sigma at the University of Arkansas, and the network of successful alumni, was what convinced me the Xi Chapter was the place for me. My experience has been nothing short of life changing. Being able to serve as Grand Master has been a huge honor and I look forward to what the remainder of 2018 will hold for these men. Having Colin Byrd as my predecessor has been a blessing. He is another example of a leader this house has produced, who would do anything to set the ship right and to challenge those around him to take the chapter to the next level. For the men of the Xi Chapter, the 2017-2018 school year was another very successful time of growth and development. I have seen first-hand the numerous men who have taken it upon themselves to lead this house with integrity and courage. I could not be more proud to be part of a leadership team that is consistently working to raise the standard.

2017 was a rough year for Greek Life organizations across the country due to various incidents; the University of Arkansas Greek Life was not an exception. However, I can confidently say that University of Arkansas Interfraternity Council has risen to the challenge. We continue to be the national example of how Greek Life can mold incoming freshmen into better men during their four years on the Hill. Xi Chapter, along with another fraternity on campus, were the first houses to enact a detailed Risk Management plan for each social function that Kappa Sigma hosts here at the university. The plan has since been adopted by all of the Interfraternity Council and minimizes issues at social functions. It has also helped build a stronger relationship between fraternities, UAPD, and university administration. I had the honor to meet with Chancellor Steinmetz and the Dean of Student Life, on behalf of the Xi Chapter, to share this Risk Management Plan The administration is very proud of the initiative that we have shown. We, as a chapter and within our Greek community, have continued to be the leaders of progressive change which substantiates the claim that Greek Life will continue to be a place where young men can interact in a safe and educational environment at the University of Arkansas.

This past academic year we also created a committee of two members from each pledge class to continue to restructure our pledge program. Over the past couple of years we have made many changes to our pledge program, not because it was broken, but because there were areas of improvement. Overall, we have increased the focus on grades, the history of Xi Chapter, and brotherhood activities in an effort to form closer bonds between our new members. I have seen first-hand how men, from Los Angeles, to Denver, to Houston, have found their home here at 711 W. Dickson Street and have taken pride in the rich history of the Xi Chapter.

In regard to academics, Xi Chapter continues to see improvements compared to the all men’s average at the university.

This accomplishment can be attributed largely to our working partnership with Campus Concierge, a local tutoring service here in Fayetteville. Our pledges and members have access to the tutoring services they may need at zero cost due to the generous donations made by the Xi Chapter alumni to our educational endowment. This investment into academic resources is unique to Xi Chapter on campus and I am very proud of it.

Once again, Xi Chapter was awarded the Charles B. Whiteside Award of Excellence from the University of Arkansas for the 2017-2018 academic year. This was the second consecutive year that Xi was one of only two fraternities to receive this honor. We have received the Charlie Whiteside award twenty-four of the last twenty-seven years. This year some members of Xi Chapter were also recognized for individual accomplishments. Colin Byrd was recognized as the Outstanding IFC President for his leadership during 2017. Nick Schoenfelder was awarded the 2017 Model Initiate for IFC and Malcolm McNair was given the Outstanding Alumnus Advisor award for his dedication during 2017. I am honored to have been a part of something bigger than myself and it has been an exciting time to see those around me recognized for their contributions to our distinguished chapter.

We look forward to the new members we will welcome this fall in our 2018 pledge class. It is with great confidence that I say our rush chairmen have continued to recruit the best all-around men that register for IFC recruitment. We anticipate that we will regain control in some regions where we have lost our recruitment advantage and will pledge a diverse group of young men from different areas.

I would like to recognize the men that have come before us at 711 W Dickson and the legacy they have built at the University of Arkansas. It goes without saying that without the countless hours of service from Malcolm McNair, Martin Swope, and other alumni our men would not have the opportunities they do today. The tireless work and effort they put forth should be constant a reminder for us to work towards excellence on a daily basis and our success as a chapter is a reflection of their admiration for this house. As a chapter, we continue to look to the future as we strive to keep Xi on top at the University of Arkansas. Above all else, the men in this house are the business and

Rush REPORT

At the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma recruitment is a top priority of ours. Rush is the first step first step towards remaining a top house on campus, and a top chapter nationally. No other fraternity has quite the rush process we do. Our rush process is second to none in recruiting the best young men that will not only be leaders within the fraternity, but also on campus and the community as well.

Every year, more and more young men decide to attend the University of Arkansas, and go through rush. We separate potential members by region, and assign one or more rush chairmen to each region to get to know guys on a better and more personal level. Our rush committee consists of three head rush chairs, several regional chairs in Arkansas, and other members strategically elected to support our efforts out of state.

We have a team of undergrads and alumni to increase our legacy rush efforts.

Our strong rush committee system enables us to continue to outperform other fraternities, cover more ground, and ensure that no rushee is overlooked.

This past year we had the privilege of recruiting, pledging, and initiating 71 outstanding young men. When meeting potential members, we take time to show them the campus, our house, and what exactly it means to be a Kappa Sigma. We emphasize our extensive alumni network, our academic success, our involvement on campus and in our community, and our dominance at the University of Arkansas.

We would like to thank our alumni for their continued support. Without them, Xi Chapter’s recruitment would not operate as efficiently, nor as successfully as it currently does.

Pledge REPORT

A

As we all know from recent events, Greek Life is changing more and more each semester. It seems as though we cannot go a few months without hearing about some incident involving Greek life somewhere in the country.

Here at the Xi Chapter, our pledge program is staying one step ahead of the game. This past spring semester we had 21 young men pledge, 20 of whom made it to initiation with a 2.5 GPA or higher. Throughout their eight-week pledgeship these young men were gathered together to hear talks from the University of Arkansas Police Department for education on alcohol consumption and the risks associated with drinking. They heard success

stories from a local lawyer about his time in college and his outlook on life through his “forty year goggles.” There were many other guest speakers involved, as well as countless team building activities which allowed the pledge class to strengthen the bond they share with one another.

The program this year was embedded in the concept of honesty, and being the best man you can be. I believe it is the drive to succeed in all that we do that keeps Xi chapter ahead of the rest of campus when it comes to recruiting good men and molding them into even better ones. I had five assistant pledge trainers with me this semester, each one of them had specific duties ranging from monitoring grades, keeping up with class attendance, or leading Bible study. I owe a lot of credit to my assistants, the chapter as a whole, our executive officers as well as the rush chairs that brought these young men together.

Next semester I expect to have three times the amount of pledges as I did in the spring, and I am very excited to welcome them to 711 West Dickson and help them become men of Xi. DALTON NOKES

Social REPORT Whether it’s the classic house parties that set Xi apart, or the innovative new social functions that continue to keep it atop, the social scene of 2018 was extraordinary.

Our 2018 social calendar began with the annual camping function, Southern Skies. Since 1991, brothers and their dates have enjoyed a night full of live music, good food, and bonfires.

Moving formal to the spring, our fall semester hosted our semiformal event. Our semi-formal was held at the Sassafras Vineyard and Winery located in Springdale, Arkansas. Members, along with dates, enjoyed live music in fun/festive atmosphere. In an effort to add a major function in the fall, Xi hosted our first annual Talladega Nights function in the back lot. In NASCAR and white-trash themed outfits, members were provided with a live performance from famous rapper, Riff-Raff.

The social calendar in the spring semester was filled with our annual Formal in New Orleans, our traditional Frattyshack function, and our famous ROW event. Members enjoyed a nice dinner in the banquet hall of the Hilton Double Tree Hotel followed by a memorable night on Bourbon Street. Next up, Frattyshack was a success, where members dressed up in their best golfer-themed outfits and partied to live music from country singer, David Adam Byrnes. ROW was last, where alongside SAE, Sigma Chi, and Phi Delt, the Fairgrounds hosted artists Boogie with a Hoodie and Adventure Club for a huge concert.

Overall, the executive committee and social committee put in a tremendous amount of work and preparation to perform an elite and successful social year! BRADLEY SAAD

Philanthropy REPORT This past year, the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma has focused more on philanthropy than any year in the recent past. The members of Kappa Sigma volunteered at several events around Northwest Arkansas during the Spring semester. Some events included: the Single Parent Banquet, Holt Middle School Glow Party, Chilirhea (chili competition), and the Evergreen Cemetery Clean up. Kappa Sigma also hosted our annual volleyball tournament, Bahama Mama, in the Fall 2017 semester. It was held at the house once again, and the Greek turnout was much better than in past years. Ten sororities and eight fraternities participated in the tournament. Tank tops from B-unlimited were made and sold at the event with the proceeds going to the Military Heroes Campaign, Kappa Sigma’s National Philanthropy. Donations from sponsors, as well as vendors who attended the event, were also sent to the Military Heroes Campaign.

Intramural REPORT Last year was another great year for Kappa Sigma in the intramurals department. We had some great teams in basketball, flag football, and softball. Year in and year out we continue to dominate on the basketball court. Xi won the D1 league 2 years ago, but lost to the eventual champion last year. In flag football we had a few really competitive teams that could really play. This year I hope we can put together some really great teams across all of the intramural sports that Arkansas offers and try to bring home some hardware. ZAC HUSMAN

Conclave REPORT

The delegation of men sent to represent Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma once again served as a paragon to chapters across the nation at the July 12-16, 2017 71st Biennial Grand Conclave. Xi’s delegation consisted of seven prominent undergraduate members including: Andy Stoops, Davis Mills, Jared Bryant, Drake Fletcher, Ryan Pohlkamp, and Aubry Clayton, who were accompanied by our longtime Alumnus Advisor, Malcolm McNair. The delegation spent five days in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip with members of Kappa Sigma from across the nation.. The conclave was filled with speeches from prominent members of Kappa Sigma, the installation of a new Supreme Executive Committee, and workshops focused on training officers to more efficiently perform their duties. The conclave concluded with an awards ceremony where Xi chapter took home the Chapter Award of Academic Excellence and the prestigious recognition as Champion Chapter as the number one recruiting chapter in the nation.

Xi chapter of Kappa Sigma is the oldest fraternity on the University of Arkansas campus and the second oldest, continuously active Kappa Sigma chapter in the country.

they initiated William S. Goodwin and George B. Pugh. These five founders, along with Richardson, laid the foundation for the chapter and association we enjoy today.

On May 29, 1890, Dr. Charles Richardson of Omicron chapter (Emory & Henry), initiated our first three members John C. Futrall, William A. Crawford, and Carl C. Miller. On June 6,

Xi chapter is more than just numbers. Our chapter of Kappa Sigma has a history of producing leaders. We have members who have served in each of the statewide offices in Arkansas, including Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secrectary of State and Treasurer.

GOVERNORS

On Thursday, May 15, 1896 Michael Pleasant Huddleston, Xenophon O. Pindall, and James H. Stevenson, three Arkansas Industrial University Law Students, were initiated at an alumni convention in Little Rock. These three men were attending Law School in Little Rock, which at the time was part of AIU in Fayetteville. John E. Martineau was initiated at Fayetteville in 1893.

HUDDLESTON

Huddleston, born in Tennessee, moved to Arkansas when he was 17 and lived in Paragould for almost forty years. He was a wellknown attorney who at one time was a law partner of Junius Marion Futrell, Governor of Arkansas (briefly in 1913 and two terms from 1933-1937).

While in Law School, Huddleston was chief clerk in the U.S. Land Office in Little Rock.

He was elected to the Arkansas Senate in 1900 and reelected in 1902. He became president pro-tempore in 1901.

As president pro-tempore, he also acted, at the time, as Lt. Governor. Over the course of the next year, there were several times that Huddleston served as acting Governor while Governor Jeff Davis was out of state. These stints lasted from several days to one month. Huddleston later

served as Second Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney and briefly entered the race for Attorney General in 1916.

Huddleston would practice law in Paragould for the rest of his life.

PINDALL

Huddleston’s pledge brother, Xenophon O. Pindall was born in Missouri and grew up in Arkansas where his father and uncle were well-known attorneys.

Pindall graduated from Central College, now Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri and received his law degree from AIU.

Pindall began his practice of law in Arkansas City (Desha County) with his cousin. He was elected to the state legislature in 1902 and 1904. In 1906, Pindall won the popular vote in the Attorney General primary but lost in a delegated convention. He was elected to the State Senate in 1907 in a special election and was elected president pro-tempore in 1907. When Governor Sebastian Little was committed to the insane asylum, Pindall served as Governor from May 14, 1907 – January 11, 1909.

For many years, the alumni in central Arkansas had conventions, reunions, and social events in Little Rock. From 1905 through at least 1907, the group had a dinner dance on an Arkansas River paddle boat, which was attended by prominent alumni from around the state. Pindall made sure they had the best of accommodations. At the end of his term in 1909, he returned to the practice of law in Little Rock until his death in 1935.

MARTINEAU

John E. Martineau was born in a log cabin in Clay County, Missouri to Canadian immigrants. Four years later, Martineau’s family moved to Lonoke where his parents raised ten children. It was in Lonoke that Martineau met Joe T. Robinson, who would become a mentor and life-long friend. Martineau was one of a large group of initiates in 1894.

That group also included future Federal Judge Thomas C. Trimble, future Congressman and Federal Judge Samuel B. Hill, future deputy to Philippine Governor William Howard Taft, Andrew Van Smith, and prominent Oklahoma Attorney Samuel L. Morley.

Unlike Pindall and Huddleston, Martineau was active in the undergraduate chapter, serving in many capacities in the chapter and on campus. Martineau began his career as a teacher in Oklahoma before becoming principal at North Little Rock schools. While he was in North Little Rock, Martineau attended law school in Little Rock. He passed the bar in 1899.

In 1902 and again in 1904, he was elected State Representative for Pulaski county. In 1907, Acting Governor X.O. Pindall, all things being equal, appointed Martineau to fill a Chancery Court vacancy covering Pulaski, Lonoke and White counties. He was re-elected to three six-year terms.

Martineau came in third in the 1924 Democratic party primary and returned in 1926 to win a close Democratic primary. He became the first person since Reconstruction to defeat an incumbent Arkansas governor running for a second term.

Martineau was also the first Governor to broadcast his inaugural address on radio. He was instrumental in establishing the highway system in Arkansas, which included issuing bonds instead of improvement district taxes to fund the highway system. While only serving as Governor for 14 months, Martineau was a transformational figure during his time in Arkansas politics. When Judge Jacob Trieber died in office, President Calvin Coolidge, a Republican, nominated Martineau, a democrat, for the seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas. Martineau had impressed Coolidge when they worked together during a flood in the delta.

Martineau would hear and rule on many of the challenges to his controversial road plan while sitting on the bench.

After nine years on the federal bench, Martineau came down with influenza and died on March 6, 1937. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, at the urging of Joe T Robinson, nominated Thomas C. Trimble, III (1894) to replace Martineau on the federal bench, where he served until 1957.

CONGRESSMEN

Xi chapter has had six initiates serve in Congress.

Four served with distinction in the House of Representatives for many, many years. Founder William Shields Goodwin (1890), served from 19111921; Samuel B Hill (1894), served from 1923-1936 when he took a position on the United States Board of Tax Appeals; William V. Alexander (1952), who served from 1969-1993; and Edwin R Bethune (1958), who served from 1978-1985.

SENATORS

John L McClellan and John Boozman began their careers in the House. McClellan served in the House from 1935-1939 and in the U.S. Senate from 19431977. Boozman won his first election for the U.S. House in 2001 and won election to the U.S. Senate over incumbent Senator Blanche Lambert Lincoln in 2010. Lincoln’s father, brother, and other extended family members are Xi chapter initiates. McClellan and Boozman both came to be Xi chapter initiates at special occasions and through family relationships.

MCCLELLAN

Senator John L McClellan, Sr. was initiated on the occasion of Xi chapter’s 75th anniversary celebration in 1965.

McClellan had two sons who were Xi chapter initiates John McClellan’s family suffered several tragic losses.

He lost his second wife to spinal meningitis in 1935. Two of McClellan’s three sons were Xi chapter initiates. McClellan lost Max in 1943, also to spinal meningitis while in Africa, John Jr (1947) in a car accident in 1949, and James H. “Jimmy” (1950) in a plane crash in 1958.

McClellan maintained relationships with the members of Xi chapter and was asked by the chapter to serve as the special initiate as part of Xi chapter’s 75th anniversary.

McClellan was initiated on Thursday, October 14, 1965.

McClellan passed away on November 28th, 1977.

John Nichols Boozman was a scholarship football player when he came to the University and was married within two years after arriving at the University. Boozman played on the offensive line for Frank Broyles. A gifted student, Boozman was able to forego his senior year and attend optometry school in Memphis after just three years at the U of A. John’s great uncle Hermann Boozman was initiated at Xi on June 10, 1924 and cousin Ralph B. Boozman was initiated February 2, 1934. Herman was captain of the Razorback football team and a member of the 1920s All-Decade Team. Herman was elected to two terms as Grand Treasurer, one term as Grand Master of Ceremonies, and two terms as Grand Procurator.

In 1926, while Boozman was Captain of the football team, the Kappa Sigs got in trouble for violating an unknown rush rule and were briefly suspended. While the suspension was being appealed to President

CLAYTON

Prior to Xi chapter members serving in the US Senate or in the Governor’s mansion, fathers, uncles, brothers, grandfathers, and cousins of Xi initiates have served in the Senate or as Arkansas Governor. Powell Clayton was one of the Reconstruction era Governors. Clayton served as Governor from 1868-1871, as US Senator from 1871–1877, and as the first Ambassador to Mexico from 1899 – 1905.

Clayton’s son, Powel Clayton, Jr was a 1895 initiate of Xi chapter. While the elder Clayton served in Mexico, the younger Clayton served as military attaché in the Ambassador’s office.

BERRY

James H. Berry, served as Governor from 1883-1885 and US Senator from 1885-1907. While Berry was in the US Senate, his two sons, Elliott (1897) and Frederic (1901), served as his personal secretary. Elliott and Frederic later served as elective officials in Benton County.

ROBINSON 14

Joe T. Robinson was featured in the 2017 annual report. He served as Governor and US Senator.

Joe T’s brother and nephew are Xi Chapter initiates.

Futrall (Xi 1890), a sign was erected in front of Xi chapter proclaiming it Boozman’s boarding house – a name it kept for many, many years. After graduation, Herman went to work in Little Rock. He died of complications from appendicitis in 1936.

When John Boozman ran for congress in the 2001 special election, in many ways he was surrounded by Xi chapter members. Jim Lindsey (1963) was one of his primary supporters, as were Richard Griffin (1955), John Cooper (1958), former Congressman Ed Bethune (1958), and the Meek family in Fort Smith. Boozman’s campaign manager was Phil Schoettlin, a 1986 Xi chapter initiate.

In the Fall of 2014, John met with Schoettlin where he was asked whether he would accept the chapter’s invitation to become the special initiate at Xi chapter’s 125th anniversary celebration on April 25, 2015. John was happy to accept the invitation.

Senator Boozman continues to serve as Arkansas’ Senior United States Senator where he works closely with North Carolina Senator Richard Burr, who was initiated at William & Mary.

BAILEY

Governor Carl Bailey served as Arkansas’ chief executive from 1937-1941, when his son Frank Albert Bailey was initiated and while he lived in the house. Alfred Bristol Bailey was initiated at Xi in 1946, after his father had left the Governor’s mansion.

Xi chapter’s history is littered with leaders of Arkansas and our nation.

We are proud of the men we have produced and the family of those leaders who have chosen to join our chapter. On at least one occasion, one of our member’s descendants became a respected leader representing another state.

In the early days of Xi chapter, a respected local Episcopal minister, James Julius Vaulx, was initiated in 1891 giving the chapter more credibility in the uncertain times that existed.

Vaulx was initiated at the same time as his son, Samuel Vaulx. Reverend Vaulx’s great-grandson was U.S. Senator John S. McCain, III. There were a total of nine children in the Vaulx family that lived to adulthood. Katherine Vaulx, Reverend Vaulx’s daughter, married a young naval officer she met while teaching at the University of Mississippi, who later became a 4-Star Admiral John S. McCain, Sr. in 1909. To that marriage was born John S. McCain, Jr., who also became a 4-Star Admiral. John McCain III’s story is well known and it adds yet another chapter to the storied heritage of Xi.

In Memoriam MIKE SMITH BOBBY FUSSELL

During the Spring of 2018, Xi chapter and Arkansas lost two of its finest stewards. Mike Smith, Sr., Executive Vice President of Stephens, Inc., and Judge Robert “Bobby” Fussell, retired Federal Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Arkansas, both served on Xi Corporation through both challenging and tremendously rewarding times.

Smith (Xi ’58) served on Xi Corporation for 40 years (19742004). As an undergraduate, he was Rush Chairman in the Fall of 1959.

In 1970, Mike led the team at Stephens that took a small group of discount stores based in Bentonville public. The group merged together to become Walmart. It was through Mike’s suggestion, that the Walmart shareholders meeting became the event it is today.

Judge Robert “Bobby” Fussell (Xi ‘57), originally from Forest City, retired from the court and from serving on Xi Corporation following a stroke in 2003.

Bobby served as GM during his undergraduate days and was a leader on campus. Fussell was appointed to the bench in 1983. Early in his career, he built a reputation for honesty, compassion, and lolyalty. He was known as a friend to all. Fussell served as assistant US Attorney, deputy attorney general, and was an advocate for the deaf. He prosecuted corrupt state officials as a US Attorney and was integral in the convictions of Senator Guy “Mutt” Jones and Senator Q. Byrum Hurst. Fussell also prosecuted Jim Bruten, the Superintendent of the Tucker Unit of the state penitentiary, for the mistreatment of prisoners.

Fussell served as a bankruptcy judge from 1983 – 2003.

Prior to that, he served as Assistant US Attorney and was in private practice.

In the Ernie Dumas article from the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture, which is listed below, Dumas writes: “His earliest commitment was to spend forty percent of his time giving free representation to disabled veterans and the deaf, who were in need of a lot of assistance when they found themselves in legal difficulties. He went to night school for nine weeks to learn sign language so that he could communicate with deaf clients. When he learned that insurance companies put deaf people in a high-risk pool for automobile insurance, which made policies too expensive for them, he prepared a lawsuit against the companies, contending that there was no evidence that people with hearing problems were more prone to accidents and that the policy violated the equal-protection and due-process rights of the hearing impaired. The companies settled by dropping the discriminatory policy and agreeing to use actuarial data to determine the premiums.”

For Xi chapter, he served on Xi Corporation from 1974-2004 where he worked with Charlie Whiteside, George McLeod, Mike Smith, and others to put Xi back on a firm foundation.

During the mid-1970’s Xi chapter records illustrate how Fussell would assist in working with the undergraduate chapter that had been taken advantage of by utility companies in the time it did not reside at 711 W. Dickson.

The contributions of both of these men is hard to quantify.

From 1974 through their retirement from Xi Corporation, they each served diligently to improve Xi chapter.

Xi chapter offers condolences to all who knew and who mourn these fine men. Their work here is done.

As I sat down to write this, removed from the Hill and 711 W Dickson, it became evident to me just how fast time marches on. I flipped through the pages of previous Annual Reports to get an idea of what the men before me wrote about in this particular section. As I skimmed through the pages the memories of Xi 125, of Powerhouse Row, and of the many road trips to formals and tailgates all come flooding back to me. I thought about the days spent at the House, of times spent trying to squeeze in one last game of volleyball before a class that I inevitably ended up skipping. You can’t help but smile at the pictures of past pledge classes on their bid days.

You’re reminded of the countless hours spent trying to piece those pledge classes together during rush. You realize just how much we grow and mature during our four, sometimes five, years since that day our freshman year.

Coming from Kansas City, Missouri, I was not at all familiar with the U of A or Xi Chapter. However, I was fortunate enough to meet Ian Roberts (Xi ‘13), Pierce Phillips (Xi ‘13) and Brad Parker (Xi ’07) prior to classes starting that fall. They ended up rushing me and I received a bid to Kappa Sigma in the fall of 2014. I was, and continue to be, humbled to be a part of this storied House. The Kappa Sigma Experience truly made my time at the University of Arkansas something I would want my sons to know. There is little doubt in my mind that pledging Kappa Sigma has opened doors for me that would have otherwise been closed. More importantly, and all the more relevant now as an alumnus, is that in pledging Kappa Sig I joined one of the most impressive and successful fraternities in the nation.

Kappa Sigma at Arkansas has been blessed with incredible and able men throughout its history and into the present.

These men of the past, like Malcolm McNair (Xi ’69), our outstanding and eternally patient alumnus advisor of over 30 years, and men of the present, like our current GM Matt Schoenfelder (Xi ‘15), continue to maintain and build upon Xi’s legacy at Arkansas. The culture of Greek Life, not only at the University of Arkansas but across the nation, has changed significantly during my short tenure as an undergrad. However, there is no doubt that the future of Xi Chapter is in excellent hands with these men at the helm.

As this chapter of my life comes to an end and I move on to begin law school in the fall, I will cherish my four years spent at 711 W. Dickson. Nothing comes close to spending perhaps the most important, formative years of your life making memories with the brothers within the House. I will miss them all tremendously. They say that we are all products of our environment. If that is the case, then 128 years of the business and political leaders from the University of Arkansas attest to the environment that our House provides. It has truly been an extraordinary four years as a Kappa Sigma at the U of A; and I am all the more thankful, now, for the memories and the brotherhood that last a lifetime.

College students seem to make a regular diet of fast food.

When Will Slabaugh was in Fayetteville, he probably had no idea he would make a living analyzing the restaurant industry or that he would appear regularly on CNBC or other financial networks to talk about the financial performance of burger joints.

Slabaugh, a 2004 initiate from Wynne, studied international business at the Walton College of Business with a concentration in Finance and a minor in Spanish.

He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2007. Will went to work for Stephens, Inc., the Little Rock based investment company, right out of college.

While at the U of A, Will was in the Walton College Honors program. When asked what at Walton College helped him the most in what he is doing today, he said: “By far the most helpful class to me was Portfolio Management in the business school—however, the longer I’m in this role, the more convinced I become that personal drive, personal responsibility, and a strong intellectual curiosity are more meaningful than a 4.0 GPA or classes taken, which is what I look for in potential younger associates.”

He began his career in Stephens’ corporate finance department before moving into equity research. Following his move into the equity research group at Stephens, Will developed a reputation as an incisive thinker and a hard worker. In 2013, Institutional Investor named Slabaugh as a 2013 All-America Rising Star of Wall Street. Arkansas Business named Slabaugh to its 20 under 20 list in 2014.

both good and bad, which you often see as Treasurer and GM,” he stated. “I also credit Charlie Whiteside and other alumni connections for helping me land my first job at Stephens in 2007.”

Will’s landing at 711 W. Dickson is part of his family’s tradition. Slabaugh’s grandfather, John Brenner, was initiated in 1946. Stephen, Will’s older brother, was initiated in 2000 and also served as GM for Xi chapter. Since Will’s graduation, his cousin Blanton Crisler was initiated in 2013. “Going to the U of A and being a Kappa Sig was something I wanted to do for as long as I can remember.

My grandfather and brother have always been men that I look up to, and following in their footsteps as an 18 year old was more exciting than I can describe,” Slabaugh said.

John Brenner was one of two alumni to receive their 70 year certificates at Xi chapter’s 125th anniversary celebration in 2015.

In looking back at his time at Xi chapter, Slabaugh reflects upon the friendships, the ups and downs, and the life time of memories developed in such a short period of time. “Xi Chapter is where I met and bonded with the majority of my closest friends. We lived together, went through ups and downs together, and later learned to help each other tackle life as we left college. There is a second level to the relationships we all established at 711 W. Dickson that are tough to replicate anywhere else, which has left me with a group of guys that I know I can count on, even today.”

Slabaugh serves as a Director on Xi Educational Foundation’s board and also is an investor in two Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken restaurants in Little Rock. Will lives in Little Rock with his wife, Tracy, daughter Evie (3) and son Fitz (6 months). By the way, Fitz is already hearing his dad as he whispers in his ear about 711 W. Dickson.

A firm foundation for his success was established through his time at Xi chapter. During his time there, he served as Grand Master, Grand Treasurer, Head Rush Chairman, and Assistant Rush Chairman. “I learned much more at the Kappa Sig house than I learned in any classroom.

In 1996, Dan Van Horn (Xi ’70), saw the problem that his 8-year old son had in swinging his adult cut-down golf club. It was too heavy, the grip too large, and the shaft too stiff for him to have fun learning the game. Dan decided to put his mechanical engineering education to use by designing lighter weight kids golf clubs with flexible shafts and smaller grips. Soon after, U.S. Kids Golf was formed to help other parents with the same challenge.

Today, over 20 years later, U.S. Kids Golf, which has both a for-profit LLC (equipment and related accessories) and a nonprofit Foundation (tournaments and coaching), is the largest junior golf company in the world and is recognized as a Top 100 Business in Golf by the National Golf Foundation.

Three years after starting the equipment business, Van Horn birthed the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship, and

in 2001, the Foundation was started in order to house the company’s tournament and coaching initiatives. The World Championship gained a mass following when, in 2013, it became the setting for an original full-length documentary on Netflix, The Short Game. The film highlighted the journey of eight young players competing in the World Championship. This year more than 2200 players from 47 states and 60 countries participated in the Pinehurst, NC event.

The Foundation conducts over 1500 tournaments worldwide each year and has trained more than 3000 professional golf coaches on becoming experts in youth golf development.

Most importantly to Dan, his work through the years has impacted millions of young players and their families.

Man-of-the-Year Association are happy to award Dan Van Horn with the 2018 Charles L. Massey, Jr. Alumni Man-of-the-Year Award.

Dan was gracious to spend some time talking with Xi Chapter about his life and career: XI CHAPTER: Did you always know you wanted to get into golf as a career?

VAN HORN: No, not at all. I was offered golf and football scholarships coming out of high school, but I didn’t start in golf as an actual career until I was 39. I was at a crossroads after closing a women’s accessory company and asked the Man upstairs for guidance, not knowing exactly what He meant when I heard “Golf.” So, I played a year or so professionally, as I was searching for what that meant. I did earn one check for $75. Obviously, being a touring pro was not for me, but I hope this shows I was

willing to fail in pursuit of direction. I always encourage people to see that life is full of opportunities and requires risk taking.

XI CHAPTER: What makes U.S. Kids Golf successful?

VAN HORN: I think it starts with our mission statement, which my wife and I wrote that’s very simple but profound: “To help kids have fun learning the lifelong game of golf and to encourage family interaction that builds lasting memories.” Once we agreed on our direction, everything I did, from the design of our equipment to tournaments to coaching, was to fulfill that mission. Writing down a Purpose and Mission Statement is a great way to decide what matters to you most.

XI CHAPTER: What were some of the biggest challenges you’ve had to overcome in starting such a company?

VAN HORN: There have been plenty, with lack of capital being one, but that can be overcome if a company learns how to grow revenue and become profitable.

Making equipment lighter and properly fit meant a parent would have to make a new purchase for their child rather than grabbing an adult club they already owned and cutting it down. Parents didn’t realize how detrimental these cut-downs were for developing their child’s swing. We had to educate them and create a market. Also, having parents act as caddies in tournaments was different and still is today from many other junior golf tournaments who believe that parents should be on the sidelines. Consistently, parents tell us that the time spent caddying is the best four hours of their life.

Today, after the purchase and redesign of our golf course, Longleaf Golf & Family Club, I’m working on our greatest challenge: helping golf courses become more beginner and kid friendly by making par possible for every level of player. Rees Jones and the American Society of Golf Course Architects is supporting this idea, and it’s called the Longleaf Tee system (see longleafteesystem.com). For golf to grow into the future, we have to eliminate gender names like “men’s, women’s, or senior” tees and determine where we tee off by how far we hit the ball. A famous professional once said, “I can only shoot par or better if I can play a course scaled to my ability.”

with it. My first job was as a technical sales representative for Philips Petroleum, but there was something inside of me that said, “I’m an entrepreneur.” When I saw how hard it was for my son to swing clubs that were too stiff and heavy, I used my college physics to figure out a solution.

XI CHAPTER: What are you most proud of? Professionally?

Personally?

VAN HORN: I’m fortunate and blessed in many ways. I love the metrics that show we’ve impacted so many young players, but there’s nothing better than when a dad or mom comes up to me and shares a story about how golf has helped their family spend more time together. And personally, I’ve been married for almost 40 years to the same great wife and have three terrific adult children, all of whom play golf, by the way! And I’m proud to be the son of a mom and dad who modeled, to my brothers and sister and me, such a commitment to family.

XI CHAPTER: You were recently inducted into the Arkansas Golf Hall of Fame. What was that like?

VAN HORN: It was one of the greatest honors I’ve had. I was thrilled to be recognized for my work, but having it from your home state’s golf association is especially rewarding. I grew up playing junior golf in Arkansas and still today am a good player with a 4 handicap, but I didn’t get in by how well I play.

XI CHAPTER: How did Arkansas, and more specifically, your time at Xi chapter, prepare you for the road you’ve taken?

VAN HORN: I studied Mechanical Engineering while at the University. It seemed right at the time, but I wasn’t in love

As for Xi chapter, my biggest takeaway was the relationships I formed while there. The parties, the ballgames, spring dances - all of those are wonderful lifelong memories for me, but what made them special was the friendships formed.

Many of the guys I’m still in touch with almost 45 years later.

Brothers in heart. Your bond with Xi chapter doesn’t end after college.

XI CHAPTER: What are some of your favorite memories from 711 W. Dickson and Fayetteville?

VAN HORN: One was our senior year when we won the All-University Intramural Championship in touch football in a driving rain storm at Razorback Stadium. It was incredibly fun and exciting. Even Mom Crow came to the game. I got carried off the field - not sure how you beat a memory like that.

XI CHAPTER: Do you think any current Xi Chapter members have played U.S. Kids Golf equipment or tournaments?

VAN HORN: My guess is yes, for sure some have, and I hope that they will tell their parents “thank you” for giving them the game of golf when they were young. Baseball, football, soccer, whatever - all end, but golf is for a lifetime.

Van Horn is originally from Russellville. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Atlanta and have three adult children: Ben, David, and Abigail. Dan’s brother, John W. Van Horn, Jr., is also a Xi alumni, initiated in 1973, and currently resides in Dardanelle. Dan graduated from the U of A with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1974. As an undergraduate, Dan served Xi Chapter as Intramural Chairman and Grand Treasurer.

Campus Leaders Xi Chapter has served as an integral part of University of Arkansas campus life throughout our history. In 2017-2018, we continued this tradition with many campus leaders.

RICHARD ANDELIN Richard graduated in May from the Walton College of Business. He is from Tulsa, Oklahoma and studied Supply Chain Management with a minor in Marketing. Richard was active in the Finance Club, the Gaming Club, and Leadership Walton. At Xi chapter, he has served as Risk Management Chairman, a Judicial Board Member, and Assistant Pledge Trainer. He maintained a 3.00 GPA.

ADAM JONES Adam graduated in May with Cum Laude honors in Finance and Accounting from the Walton Honors College. He maintains a 3.8 GPA and has been on both the Dean’s List, Chancellor’s List, and was selected as a Senior of Significance. Adam has been involved with Finance Club, Beta Alpha Psi, New Greek Council, Freshman Leadership Forum, and served as a board member for the Office of Financial Affairs for three years. Within Xi Chapter, Adam has served as Pledge Class Treasurer, Community Service chair, and Campus Relations chair. He also served as a member of the Scholarship, Risk Management, Row Week, and Social committees. Adam now resides in Little Rock and works as an associate in the Private Client Group of Stephens, Inc.

HUNTER HASTINGS Hunter Hastings is a Senior from Bentonville majoring in Finance and minoring in Supply Chain Management. He maintains a 3.1 GPA. Hunter has served as the Philanthropy and Community Service Chairman for the Xi chapter and has also served on the Judicial Board and the Risk Management Committee. On campus, he is active in the Arkansas Supply Chain Association and Walton College Finance Association. Hunter currently works for Tyson Foods, Inc. as a Category Marketing Intern on the Prepared Food side of the company.

SCOTT SIMS Scott Sims graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Sam M Walton College of Business with a Finance and Accounting double major. He was recognized as a Senior of Significance. On campus, Scott served as a Lead Hog, a member of the Walton College Finance Association, ASG Senator, member of Leadership Walton, Honor’s College Peer Mentor, as a tutor at Campus Concierge, and as a member of the Student Alumni Board.

Scott narrowly lost the election for ASG President in the Spring of 2017.

Previously, he served as Executive Treasurer for the Walton College Finance Association.

Scott spent 5 weeks in the summer of 2015 studying at the University of Arkansas Rome Center. In the Summer of 2017, Scott studied in India. Scott is an Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholar. At Xi chapter, Scott has served as Grand Treasurer and Academic Chair. Scott is originally from McGehee.

JEREMY WARREN Jeremy maintains a 4.0 GPA in the Walton College of Business where he majors in Finance with a minor in Accounting. Through his first two years at Xi chapter he has served as Texas Rush Chairman twice, as a member of Judicial Board and was twice recognized by the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund with Scholarship/Leadership Awards. He is an active member of Leadership Walton, Walton Finance Association, Real Estate club, and Trading and Investing club. This Plano, TX native has received the ARCF scholarship, the Ethel Harper Philips scholarship, and a Kappa Sigma scholarship.

BEN PINTER Little Rock native Ben Pinter is a Senior majoring in Biology with minors in Marketing and Physics. He maintains a 3.63 GPA. He is active in the Pre-Dental Society and the Biology club. He is the recipient of the ADHE Governors Distinguished Scholarship and the University of Arkansas Leadership Scholarship. Ben has been Assistant Rush Chairman and Head Rush Chairman.

EVAN WAICBERG Waicberg is a Junior from Frisco, Texas majoring in Business Management with a minor in Finance. He maintains a 3.2 GPA in the Walton College of Business where he is involved in Leadership Walton. Evan was Model Pledge for his pledge class in the Fall of 2016. At Xi chapter, Waicberg has served as Grand Scribe, Assistant Pledge Educator, Legacy Rush Chairman, Social Committee Member, and on the Ritual Committee. He has had internships at Vidyo, Inc., Recycle 2 Support, and SAKE (Students Acquiring Knowledge through Enterprise).

CONNOR PATRICK Connor is a Sophomore from The Woodlands, TX. He maintains a 4.0 GPA in the Walton College of Business, studying Accounting and Finance. Patrick serves on the Arkansas Student Alumni Board and is a member of the Walton Honors College. Connor was recognized as a member of the Chanellor’s List in the Fall of 2017 and Spring of 2018.

At Xi chapter, he has served on Xi chapter’s Judicial Board.

Campus Leaders MATT SCHOENFELDER Matt is a Senior Accounting major with a minor in Finance who maintains 4.0 GPA. He is in the Walton Honors College, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma (top 7% of his class), and nominated as a presidential scholar for the Walton College of Business. On campus, Matt is part of Leadership Walton, Associated Student Government, Beta Alpha Psi, and the Finance Club. He also serves as an Honors College Ambassador and on the Chancellor’s Committee of 5 IFC Presidents who meet with him on fraternal affairs. Within the house he served as Grand Master, Grand Procurator, a member of Risk Management Committee and on the Judicial Board. He has received a Kappa Sigma Scholarship/Leadership Award and an Honors College Academy Scholarship. Matt has been a supplemental instruction leader for Principles of Accounting for 5 semesters and he teaches classes of 12-15 students 3 times a week.

NABIL BHIMANI Nabil is a Senior, originally from Chicago, studying Political Science in the Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences. In addition to his involvement on Xi chapter’s Judicial Board, Nabil served as a Senator in the Associated Student Government. He is also Secretary for the Pre-Law Society. Bhimani maintains a 3.15 GPA.

CONNOR TRUITT Connor is a Senior who has been very active on the campus while at the U of A. A Finance major from Memphis, he has served as the Academic Chairman for Kappa Sigma, along with serving previously on the Scholarship Committee, Judicial Board, and Risk Management Committee. On campus, he is a Committee Head for the Real Estate Club and is also involved with various other organizations within the Walton College of Business, such as Leadership Walton and the Walton College Finance Association. He is a recipient of the New Arkansan Non-Resident Tuition Award, along with the Walton College Study Abroad Scholarship. This past summer he studied abroad in Ireland and has maintained a 3.80 GPA.

GRAYSON DILLINGHAM Grayson is a Senior biology/pre-dental major in the Fulbright honors college. This past year Grayson ended the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.82. He is involved in the Biology Club and Dental Club on campus. At Xi chapter, Dillingham served as Grand Master of Ceremonies and also as a member of the Risk Management Committee. He was also served on the Social committee for Xi chapter – planning and organizing social events.

PIERCE JONES Pierce Jones is a Junior from Memphis. Jones is a Finance major in Walton College where he is also is a member of Leadership Walton. On campus, Jones serves as the IFC Vice President of Administration and President of the UARK Fly Fishers. At Xi chapter, he has served as a Rush Chairman, Scholarship Chairman, and as a member of our Judicial Board. Pierce has studied abroad in Belize. Pierce maintains a 3.63 GPA and interns at Sage Partners Commercial Real Estate Solutions.

COLIN BYRD Colin Byrd, of Kansas City, MO, graduated Cum Laude from the J. William Fulbright Honors College with a B.A. in Political Science in May 2018. At Xi Chapter, Colin served as Grand Master during the 2016-2017 academic year. As GM, Colin was awarded “Outstanding Grand Master” at the 2018 Kappa Sigma Leadership Conference in New Orleans, LA. He was also awarded “Outstanding IFC President” at the University of Arkansas and was selected as a “2018 Graduating Student Leader” by the University of Arkansas, Division of Student Affairs.

Prior to GM, he served as Grand Scribe and Risk Management Chairman of Xi. While on Campus, Colin served as a Senator in the Associated Student Government, as well as Vice-President and Secretary of the Pre-Law Society. He was also a member of the College Republicans, Italian Club, and Lead Hogs. Colin made both the Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists while at the University of Arkansas and was a recipient of a number of scholarships including the Charles B. Whiteside Scholarship and the Thomas J. Williams Scholarship - Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund. In the summer of 2016, Colin interned in Washington, D.C. for Congressman Sam Graves (Mo-6th). In the summer of 2017, he studied at the London School of Economics & Political Science. Colin is currently studying at the University of Missouri-Columbia, School of Law.

HUNTER RHEA Hunter Rhea, from Webb City, MO, graduated from Walton College with a 4.0. He received a BSBA in Accounting and Finance. Hunter was in the Walton College Honors program and served as an analyst in Walton College’s Portfolio Management Class. Rhea was active in the Walton Finance Association where he served as Vice President and in Beta Gamma Sigma (Business Honor Society) where he served as Treasurer. Healso served as a Homecoming Judge for the University. At Xi Chapter, Rhea served as Scholarship Chairman and Assistant Treasurer. Hunter is currently employed as a consultant at Cerner Corporation, the Kansas City based medical software company.

RYAN POHLKAMP Ryan is a Junior Honors Biology major and Spanish minor from Little Rock, Arkansas. Ryan has served as Awards Chairman, Grand Scribe, and Grand Master of Ceremonies for Xi chapter while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Pohlkamp is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and the Biology Club. Additionally, he is an Honors College Fellow and an Arkansas Governor’s Scholar. Ryan studied abroad in Alicante, Spain over the summer to finish his Spanish minor. He is currently conducting research in an astrobiology lab as an undergraduate assistant and volunteering in the Emergency Department of the local VA hospital. Ryan has remained on the Chancellor’s List since his first semester at the University of Arkansas.

JOE-JOE MACKEY Joe-Joe is a Junior from Bucyrus, KS studying Accounting in Walton College where he maintains a 3.81 GPA. At Xi chapter, Joe-Joe served as Grand Treasurer and as a member of the Risk Management Committee and Judicial Board. This past summer, he studied International Economics at the University Autonoma de Barcelona.

Campus Leaders DAVIS MILLS Davis graduated from Walton College as a Finance major with minors in Accounting and Economics. From Flower Mound, TX., Davis finished with a 3.9 GPA. This distinguished student was involved in numerous organizations on campus and in Kappa Sigma. In the chapter he served as Academic Chairman and Assistant Pledge Educator. On campus he was involved in the Rebsamen Trust Portfolio Management Class, National Model United Nations, and the Walton Finance Association. Davis has also taken has campus involvement abroad by studying in Paderno del Grappa, Italy through the CIMBA program and in India through the International Business Seminar. Outside of campus he has had internships with the U.S. House of Representatives, BVA Group LLC, and Longer Investments Incorporated.

In the summer of 2018 he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Davis made the Dean’s List and Chancellor’s List throughout his undergraduate study.

JOSHUA TAYLOR Brother Taylor is a Junior Business Economics and Finance major with a Political Science minor. He maintains a 3.95 GPA. He served Xi chapter as a Study Hall Proctor and as a member of the Risk Management Committee. On campus, he is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the Business Honor Society, Pi Sigma Alpha, the Pollical Science honor society, and the Student Alumni Board. Taylor has been on the Dean’s List for four semesters and the Chancellor’s list three semesters.

HENRY STRATTON Stratton, a Junior from Memphis, maintains a 4.0 GPA. He is an Honors College member and is the recipient of the Clark C. and Marie H. McClinton Endowed Scholarship. Henry is a Finance major, with a minor in Accounting. On campus, he is the Real Estate Club Secretary, a member of the Leadership Walton Executive Committee, and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma (top 7% of his class).

KEVIN PRYS Kevin is a Junior from Frisco, TX who is studying Accounting and Finance in the Walton College of Business. Prys has been on the Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists. At Xi chapter, he has been regional Rush Chairman for the Spring and Fall of 2018. He is a recipient of a Kappa Sigma Scholarship-Leadership Award and also received scholarships from the University of Arkansas. Prys maintains a 3.89 GPA.

MATTHEW MINNICK Matthew finished his Freshman year with a 4.0 GPA as a Finance and Accounting double major. He served as President of his pledge class, a member of Judicial Board, and the Texas Rush Chairman. On campus, Minnick is a Walton College Honors student, a member of Ducks Unlimited, a Walton Honors Peer Mentor, and an Accounting I Supplemental Instructor. He has received the Joe Murdock Memorial Scholarship, Carroll Elementary PTA Scholarship, and a Xi Educational Foundation Scholarship. Minnick interned at Richmond and Associates during the Summer of 2018.

BRETT BEAVERS Little Rock native Brett Beavers graduated in May of 2018 with a degree in Finance from the Walton College of Business. He maintained a 3.74 GPA. While at the U of A, Beavers served as an office assistant in the Razorback Basketball office. He was also an academic tutor in the athletic department. Brett was active in the Walton College Finance Association and the Sports Analytics Club.

BAILEY BEYKIRCH Bailey is a Senior in the Walton College of Business from Pittsburgh, KS. He is active on campus as Vice President of Operations for University of Arkansas Enactus, Executive Committee for Leadership Walton, Member of Finance Club, and Business Consulting Club.

Additionally, he has had several internships during his career. Beykirch maintains a 3.47 GPA. He will study at Universidad Antonio De Nebrija in Madrid during the Spring semester while working an internship / co-op with Anheuser Busch InBev.

TOBY JOHNSON Toby is a Senior in the Walton Honors College. He is studying Finance and Financial Management with a 3.86 GPA. On campus, Toby is one of the Student Managers for the U of A Basketball team. Johnson is also a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success. He served as a Kanakuk Camp Counselor the summers of 2017 and 2018.

Toby also leads a 7th grade small group through KLIFE. At Xi chapter, Johnson serves as Risk Management Chairman. He received the Arkansas Governor’s Scholarship and the Chancellor’s Distinguished Scholarship. Toby is from Harrison.

TREVOR RACZKOWSKI Trevor is a Junior Biology major who intends on becoming a dentist. He is a member of the Pre-Dental Society and the Biology Club. Trevor volunteered weekly at the Welcome Health Clinic, which is a free dental restoration clinic. He is originally from Oklahoma City and maintains a 3.88 GPA, with two semesters on the Chancellor’s List and two semesters on the Dean’s List.

SAWYER ESCH Sophomore Sawyer Esch is a Pre-Med student who maintains a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Biochemistry. He has been honored as a member of Eta Sigma Phi Honors Society for Classical Studies. On campus Esch has been involved on Student Philanthropy Council and the Arkansas Phone Campaign on campus. He is now a supplemental instruction leader for Chemistry I and II. He is the recipient of the Arkansas Service Scholarship, Evonik Jayhawks Fine Chemicals Scholarship, the Arkansas PPA Book Scholarship, and the R. Coin Mason Memorial Trust Scholarship. Sawyer is from Pittsburg, Kansas.

NICK SCHOENFELDER Nick is a Freshman from Chicago who maintains a 4.0 GPA. He is an Accounting major in the Walton Honors College where we was on the Chancellor’s List both semesters. On campus he is active in Beta Alpha Psi accounting honor society, This is Capitalism, and works as an Accounting Supplemental Instructor. At Xi chapter, he has served as Awards Chairman and Assistant Treasurer. This past Spring, Nick received the “2017 Model Initiate Award” from the University of Arkansas IFC. Nick is currently an intern in Tyson’s Treasury Department.

Xi Educational Foundation Xi Foundation was established in 1987 for the benefit of undergraduates of Xi Chapter at the University of Arkansas. Over the last 30 years, Xi Foundation has raised more the $2.5 million dollars from alumni and friends that have made it possible to underwrite undergraduate programs, chapter house improvements for educational purposes, undergraduates who attend fraternity leadership conferences and conclaves, our Man-of-the-Year Speaker Series at the University of Arkansas, and scholarships for deserving undergraduates.

CURRENT PROGRAMS The Xi Educational Foundation of Arkansas currently provides scholarships and leadership training through named programs. We will continue to offer naming opportunities for the benefit of the chapter or undergraduates as the opportunities are presented to us. Since 1990, Xi Foundation has offered scholarships to our undergraduate members, a distinguished lecture series, and leadership training in the form of cash awards or grants to help them defray any of the educational expenses.

At our 125th anniversary celebration in 2015, we offered multiple giving vehicles to allow your gift to support leadership and scholastic development of Xi Chapter undergraduates well into the future. Your planned gift could also provide you with present and future tax benefits and lifelong income.

CHARLES B. WHITESIDE SCHOLARSHIP FUND In honor of the tireless efforts of Charlie Whiteside, III (1960), Xi Corporation, in conjunction with Xi Foundation, created the Charles B. Whiteside Scholarship Fund. This fund awards cash scholarships each semester to deserving undergraduates. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholarship, leadership, campus involvement and service.

MAN-OF-THE-YEAR DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES Xi Foundation created the Man-of-the-Year lecture series as part of our Xi Project 2000 campaign. This lectures series awards $2,500 per year to the undergraduate college of the five alumni who have been named Kappa Sigma’s International Man-of-the-Year. These men are Thomas J. Williams (1910), Fulbright College Arts & Sciences; Charles L. Massey, Jr. (1941), Walton College of Business; E Fay Jones (1939), Fay Jones School of Architecture; Jerral W. Jones, Jr. (1963), Walton College of Business; and Philip S. Anderson, Jr. (1953), School of Law. Every year, on a rotating basis, one of these colleges receives this grant in honor of the respective Xi alumnus of their college.

D. MALCOLM MCNAIR, JR. LEADERSHIP PROGRAM During Xi Chapter’s 125th anniversary celebration (Xi125), the D. Malcolm McNair, Jr. (1969) Leadership Academy was established and is now funded to provide leadership and career training for Xi Chapter upper classmen. The program launched in the fall of 2018.

Academic R E P O R T The Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma takes pride in the academic achievement of our members each semester. Our GPA in the fall was 3.098 and our GPA in the Spring was 3.058. Our Partnership with Campus Concierge, a local tutoring company in Fayetteville, has given us a unique opportunity to achieve academic success.

Campus Concierge allows our members to schedule group tutoring sessions. Members also have the ability to schedule private one on one sessions that allow them to be taught directly by the tutor. Campus Concierge continues to play a major role in the academic success that our members achieve. Campus Concierge also plays a major role in our Pledge Education Program. Campus Concierge proctors weekly study halls and provides the academic chair with weekly reports to show the success of each individual. The help Campus Concierge provides is highly recommended by our members. Any member who is on academic probation is required to attend study halls and meet with Campus Concierge in an effort to improve their current grade situation.

Our scholarship committee has continued to help push members and pledges toward academic success. The members in the committee aid and guide the pledges to be academically successful in their first year of college.

The committee is in place to ensure the new students have a smooth transition into college. The pledges are held responsible for their grades and receive the help they need to keep them focused on academics.

For several years, the Charlie B. Whiteside Scholarship has been awarded to four members of the Xi Chapter. This scholarship is made possible by the generous alumni of the chapter. The scholarship offers $1,000 to members who display excellent character, leadership ability, are in good standing with the chapter, have completed one academic year, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25. The recipients of these scholarships are greatly appreciative.

In the current academic environment, college can be challenging for many individuals. Some students struggle with balancing everything in a new, unfamiliar location. However, the men that make up the Fabulous Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma were initiated because they exemplify the characteristics of our four pillars. These men are fully capable of achieving anything they put their minds to. Every member is willing to help out his fellow brother to overcome any challenges they may face. The men in this chapter possess the character and resources to greatly impact their future communities.

Mom’s Club

The Kappa Sigma Mom’s Club was formed in 1987 and serves as a support group for the XI Chapter at the University of Arkansas. We are lucky to have many Kappa Sig Moms that offer their time and talents to make our club successful. Being a Mom’s Club member is a fun way to stay in touch with your son as he navigates his way through college life. It is a wonderful way to meet his fraternity brothers, and their Moms, so that you can form new friendships of your own. An important function of Kappa Sigma Mom’s Club is communication. As a member, you will receive emails keeping you up to date, not only with Mom’s Club events, but also events where we assist the chapter. We encourage you to join and be an active member of the Kappa Sigma Mom’s Club. Registration information will be emailed to you this Fall.

The Kappa Sigma Mom’s Club provides chapter support through the following events: Dad’s Weekend held each Fall Mom’s Weekend dinner and auction held each Spring Meals and snacks during dead days and finals Holiday decorating Improvements to the Kappa Sig house Special requests or needs of the chapter Our largest fundraising event each year is Mom’s Weekend held in the Spring. We had approximately 425 people attend our event in April. This is a fun weekend spent with our sons, their fraternity brothers, and their Moms, exploring all Fayetteville has to offer. We have an informal meet and greet on Friday night and registration/open house on Saturday morning. Saturday night is our dinner and auction event, followed by entertainment at the Kappa Sig house. You will not want to miss the 2019 Mom’s Weekend and all the fun memories that will be made.

The funds raised from Mom’s Weekend last Spring are currently being used to refurbish and redecorate the living room and conference area on the main floor. We are very excited to partner with the XI Corporation to make these improvements to the house. A few of the enhancements include: new furniture, new conference chairs, a new media center for the chapter to use during rush and educational meetings, new art work, lighting, and plantation shutters. We will also enhance the 3rd floor executive conference room with a new conference table and chairs, as well as refurbished cabinetry. Please stop by when you are in Fayetteville and check out our progress.

RICHARDSON CLUB

The Richardson Club has been established to recognize initiates of Kappa Sigma’s Xi Chapter who have distinguished themselves in the areas of business, law, politics, academics or other professional pursuits, civic affairs, philanthropy or fraternal work.

The name Richardson Club is taken from Xi Chapter’s founder and the name the chapter used during the period fraternities were banned on the University of Arkansas (then Arkansas Industrial University) campus.

In an effort to recognize men who have joined the chapter celestial, the trustees can recognize both living and deceased members. Recognizing that we are significantly behind in recognizing these individuals, there will be several recipients over the first few years.

House Mother’s REPORT

It’s always been hard for me to say goodbye, and this one is particularly hard, but the nine years I spent at the Xi chapter of Kappa Sig were wonderful ones for me, and I’ll remember those good times for as long as I live. Although I really do love the house and have loved showing it off in my photographs, I love even more those who have passed through it during my time there. We went through some great times and some tough times together, and although I was meant to be the older and wiser one, I feel that I learned as much about life and people as any of the young men who lived there. My hope was always to make the Kappa Sig house feel like your home away from home, to help you realize that in addition to the great friendships and brotherhood that were developing, that you have a loving champion in me at your back, and I still hope those feelings will be a comfort and a strengthening force in the times you may need warm memories. I loved having a close-up view in seeing your growth in maturity and sense of responsibility. Often people assume that young adults are one dimensional. You are not. The experiences of college and fraternity life bring about many changes, changes that do not automatically happen, and I have seen so many work hard to grow in every area of their lives.

Our guys really chose well when they picked out their parents! It meant so much to me to get to know those who were able to participate, and it helped me to see how the guys became who they are. So many moms and dads gave much of themselves and their resources to help make the physical house better, but also welcomed their sons’ friends into their homes, and made a point of caring for me, too, when I felt that I was the one who was there to serve. They, too, will be in my “bank” of wonderful memories of Kappa Sig. While I knew I would care for each of you, I never knew that I would actually feel such strong love for what turned out to be hundreds of young people.

It was my desire to be supportive, loving and genuine in my interaction with our guys, but you all made a point of honoring, respecting and supporting me, and made me feel loved as well. My love and concern for each of you didn’t fade away when you — and now I — left the house, but remains strong.

I will want to know how you are in the years to come, and I believe when we meet it will feel as it does with those to whom you feel close enough that you can just pick up where you left off.

I am honored to have been able to serve as “second mom” for you amazing men. I wish all success for you, for loving relationships in your lives, both in the present and those to come, for strength and faith and hope during the tough times, and for you to continue to search yourselves to discover your gifts in order to be able to serve and to make this world a better place. You can do it.

I hope you’ll let me know what you’re up to. I’ll surely be thinking of you, and I love you with all my heart.
