“Not for a day, or an hour, or a college term only, but for life…”

In my time here at 711 W Dickson I have been fortunate enough to witness firsthand the exponential growth of Xi Chapter, not only in terms of size and influence within the community at the University of Arkansas, but also within the men who have walked the halls of this House over the past three years. As we all know, Xi Chapter celebrated 125 years of excellence at the University of Arkansas in 2015. Since that time, Xi has built upon that legacy of success, passed down by those who have come before us, by consistently recruiting the top men in each incoming freshman class. We have rushed over 100 men in each of the past three years which has made us not only the largest chapter on campus at the University of Arkansas, but the largest Chapter of Kappa Sigma in the world. Furthermore, we have situated ourselves with able and respected rush chairmen to sustain our tradition of excellence this fall and for years to come.

Unfortunately, as of late, Greek Life on campuses across the United States has been cast in a negative light and its future clouded with uncertainty. The University of Arkansas is no exception. However, Xi Chapter has served as a shining example of the best of what Greek Life has to offer to young men amidst the shortcomings of so many others. Our emphasis on brotherhood, scholarship, and philanthropy is unparalleled at the University of Arkansas.

Xi Chapter is truly in a league of its own due in large part to these core principles.

This past year, Xi Chapter restructured our pledge program with attention paid in particular to forming closer bonds between pledge classes, an overall increased emphasis on grades, and an increased emphasis on the rich history of the Fabulous Xi Chapter. To be clear, these have always been the goals of our pledge program in the past, however, the changes we have recently made facilitate closer pledge classes with a more vested interest in the betterment of the House as a whole. In just sixty short days, men from various backgrounds from Springfield, Missouri, to Dallas, Texas, to Little Rock, Arkansas, come together to form bonds that will last a lifetime. It could not be more true that the men you meet at 711 W Dickson will someday be the groomsmen in your wedding and, in the distant future, the pallbearers at your funeral.

On a less morbid note, Xi has also experienced a steady rise in our Chapter GPA as well as an increase in rank among the other fraternities on campus from an academic standpoint. This is due in large part to our partnership with Campus Concierge, a local Fayetteville business that offers tutoring services for classes at the University of Arkansas. Pledges are required to attend study halls throughout the week and all members have access to free tutoring sessions provided by Campus Concierge. This is made possible through the generous gifts of Xi Chapter alumni to our educational endowment – Xi Foundation of Arkansas. This academic partnership and focus on scholarship is absent in other houses elsewhere on campus.

As such a large organization, with currently over 300 members, Xi has access to the resources necessary to make a significant philanthropic impact on the community we are a part of. These resources range from monetary funds to more basic resources such as man power. Over the past year Xi has donated thousands of dollars to the Military Hero Campaign, the official philanthropy of Kappa Sigma. The men of Xi have also served as volunteers in several local capacities, from helping run elementary school carnivals to cleaning up local cemeteries. Xi continues to be a leader, not only at the University of Arkansas, but also within the larger community of Northwest Arkansas.

Taken together, these new improvements and execution of successful programs culminate into a winning formula.

Xi Chapter was awarded the Charlie B. Whiteside Award of Excellence from the University of Arkansas for the 20162017 academic year. Xi has now won this award 23 out the 26 years it has been presented. On a national stage, Xi was awarded the Founder’s Award for Chapter Excellence from the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the 2016 Summer Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida.

During my years here at Xi Chapter, I have been honored to be a part of something much larger than myself. The opportunity to lead this storied House as President has truly been the opportunity of a lifetime. From the memories made in its halls, to the friendships forged in the dining room, to the vast network of alumni I will soon find myself a part of, I will forever be indebted to this House. I know that I am not alone in saying that my time spent at Xi Chapter has been some of the happiest and most influential years of my life.

As a Chapter, we look forward to the next class of men who will continue the tradition of excellence passed down through the decades. The essence of that very tradition has been continued progress and a rejection of complacency. Although we are thankful for the many brothers who have come before us, we continually look to the future. We strive for improvement and building upon our successes – both communally as a Chapter and individually as gentlemen; we will become the business, political, and community leaders of the near future. We are extremely proud of our achievements this past year and look forward to the promising future of the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma at the University of Arkansas.

honoring D. Malcolm McNair, Jr.

I

In the spring of 1986, the University of Arkansas kicked off a capital campaign to restore Old Main. During the ceremony, two of Xi Chapter’s undergraduates met a man named David Malcolm McNair, Jr., a Xi Chapter alumni. Later that semester, they asked Malcolm to come over and judge a contest during a party at Xi Chapter. Word spread quickly regarding Malcolm’s interest in Xi Chapter. After Malcolm agreed, the delegates from Xi Chapter petitioned to have Malcolm appointed as Alumnus Advisor. With the help of C. Cole Jeffries (’67), Malcolm was formally appointed Alumnus Advisor of Xi Chapter in the fall of 1986. From that day until today, Malcolm has served as Alumnus Advisor of Xi Chapter and, with the help of many, transformed Xi Chapter to what it is today.

Malcolm was initiated March 8, 1969 and grew up in a Kappa Sigma home.

His father, David M. McNair, Sr. (’39), was initiated 30 years to the day before Malcolm. Malcolm’s uncle, William Richard “Bill Dick” McNair, was initiated in 1940. David served as Treasurer of Xi Corporation for several years, including some years while Charles B. Whiteside, Jr. served as Vice President in the 1960s. Following in his father’s footsteps, E. Conner McNair was initiated in January of 2003. Today, Conner is Vice President and Secretary of Xi Corporation.

Beginning in January of 1987, McNair took immediate action with Xi Chapter.

Xi Chapter grew from approximately 70 men in 1986 when Malcolm took over to nearly 130 by the Xi Chapter’s Centennial four short years later. In 1989, Malcolm was named the Outstanding Alumnus Advisor for the entire national Kappa Sigma fraternity. By 1991, Xi Chapter had returned to its position on the top of the rostrum at that year’s Conclave.

Through regular planning and meetings with the Executive Committee, Rush Chairman and other fraternity officers, Malcolm has been the steady hand Xi Chapter needed over the years. With his logical, rational voice, he has been able to uniquely guide the young leaders and enable them to succeed both within the fraternity and in their own lives. Eric Hartness (’84), who served as GM in the spring of 1987, said “Malcolm has been a true leader, mentor, and inspiration to me.” Cody Kees, who served as GM in 2007, said “Malcolm was the first person I called with a problem and he always provided me guidance and calmed my nerves.” Jordan Johnson, who served as GM in 1999, said “Malcolm was both a mentor and an older brother all rolled into one. While he truly cared about everyone in the house, he balanced compassion with conviction and always guided us down the right path.”

Todd Bruck (’90), who served as GM in 1991, said “I never said thank you, but I owe him so much. His friendship, guidance, and support meant the world to me 25 years ago. Malcolm shared his family and home with us; he always listened and encouraged. He was a trusted advisor, coach and friend.”

Malcolm was not just inspirational to the undergraduates at Xi Chapter, though; he also helped organize and lead the alumni group which supported Xi Chapter. Charles B. Whiteside, III (’63) stated “I truly believe Malcolm’s dedication is the reason that Xi Chapter has excelled and thrived over the years. His guidance in Fayetteville and more importantly, his great relationship with the national fraternity, were critical when we needed it most!” Malcolm’s big brother, Wyck Nisbet, who served as GM in the fall of 1969, stated, “While Charlie Whiteside controlled the purse strings and leadership guidance from Little Rock, Malcolm has provided hands-on involvement with the men at Xi Chapter, guiding and strengthening each new class of leaders. The time Malcolm has committed to Xi Chapter over the last 30 years is incalculable and I am convinced that Xi Chapter stands tall today because of Malcolm.”

During Malcolm’s tenure, Xi Chapter has won 26 IFC Awards of Chapter Excellence and 15 Founders Award for Chapter Excellence – the highest awards given by both the University of Arkansas and the national Kappa Sigma Fraternity. During Malcolm’s tenure, Xi Chapter has initiated 1,672 men – more than any fraternity chapter in the United States. Malcolm has the distinction of being directly involved in the initiating and pledging of more men than any single individual in the history of Kappa Sigma.

Malcolm is showing no signs of stopping. When the University began recruiting more out of state students, the Greek community exploded. Malcolm has served at the forefront of such expansion by serving on several Interfraternity Council boards to assist the University with the expansion efforts. All the while, Xi Chapter has led the way. In 2017, Xi Chapter has over 300 men.

In retrospect, Xi Chapter has had the benefit of many capable men who served as advisors. From the early days of

Charles Richardson, William A. Crawford, George Vaughan, and Charles Craig, to later times that included Bob Wright, Tom Cutting, and Fay Jones, Xi Chapter has enjoyed a stellar set of advisors. Malcolm easily stands in the company of these men. Today, Xi Chapter is the largest of all chapters at the University of Arkansas and of all chapters of Kappa Sigma. Indeed, we believe Xi Chapter is the largest of all fraternity chapters in the United States.

On October 7, 2016, Xi Chapter alumni and undergraduates gathered at the Fayetteville Country Club to celebrate and honor Malcolm’s 30 years of service as Alumnus Advisor. Xi Corporation President Martin Swope (’91) presented Malcolm with a citation from Kappa Sigma’s Supreme Executive Committee in recognition for his 30 years of service. In a tribute to Malcolm for the October 7th event, Kurt Lind (’85), who served as GM in the fall of 1986 when Malcolm began his service to Xi Chapter, wrote “Robert Greenleaf coined the phrase servant leadership in 1970. He said it was a desire to serve, and that a “servant’s heart,” is a fundamental characteristic of servant leadership. You epitomize this. We never felt like you were dictating to us. You were our friend, big brother, confidant, and father all wrapped up into one person. You were calm, never condescending, and always respectful. You took the time to know us, and our families, and allowed us to know you and your family. You believed in us. You saw what we could become as people and as a fraternity, and quietly propelled us towards that vision until we could see it too.”

Xi Chapter is eternally indebted to Malcolm for his years of service. Additionally, we recognize the sacrifice his wife Martha, and their children, Lucy and Conner, have made with all the time and energy Malcolm has given over the years. Malcolm is an extraordinary man who has given so much to so many and exemplifies the qualities of a Kappa Sigma.

Rush Report At the XI Chapter of Kappa Sigma rush recruitment is a top priority of ours. Rush is the first step when it comes to remaining a top house on campus, and a top chapter nationally. No other Fraternity has quite the rush process we do, and we believe it is the best when it comes to recruiting the young men that will go on to, not only lead within the fraternity, but also on campus, and throughout life.

Every year, increasingly more young men decide to attend the University of Arkansas, and go through rush recruitment. We separate potential members by region, and assign one or more rush chairmen to each region to get to know guys on a better and more personal level. Our rush committee consists of two head rush chairs, seven Arkansas regional rush chairs, two Texas rush chairs, and a legacy and alumni recommendation rush chair. Our strong rush committee and system is how we enable ourselves to continue to be above other fraternities, cover more ground, and make sure that no young man is overlooked.

This past year we had the privilege of recruiting, pledging, and initiating 89 outstanding young men. When meeting potential members, we take time to show them the campus, our house, and what exactly it means to be a Kappa Sigma. We take deep pride in our alumni, our focus on academics, our involvement on campus and in our community, and our dominance as a fraternity at the University of Arkansas.

We would like to thank our alumni for their unwavering support. Without them, Xi Chapter’s recruitment would not operate as efficiently and powerfully as it currently does. ~ DENTON BOTSFORD 7

Pledge Report

F

Few things in life have been as rewarding as holding the position of Head Pledge Educator for the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma here at the university of Arkansas. It has been a very valuable experience during my time at the University. This chapter has taken so many strangers and turned them into brothers. It is so fulfilling to be the man in charge of taking those young men and molding them into brothers.

The duties of Pledge Educator include teaching our history, personal growth, good character, and brotherhood. When the process pledgeship begins, most of the rushees that choose Kappa Sigma are unaware of our illustrious history.

It is of utmost importance to teach the past in order to appreciate the present and work towards a better future.

Kappa Sigma strives to remain at the top every year at the University of Arkansas. In learning our rich history of the men that came before, the future of Kappa Sigma remains grounded and bright.

During our time on campus, Kappa Sigma has produced many outstanding gentlemen. The structure of our pledge program encourages personal growth daily. From bid day to initiation, our pledges experience growth in all aspects of their life. Pledgeship gives young men the

opportunity to mature into leaders on campus and in the community. Our greatest tool in helping these men grow is the Star and Crescent. The Star and Crescent is what our fraternity was founded upon and it truly reflects what it means to be a man of Kappa Sigma. Once our pledges decide to implement and live by the Star and Crescent, the transformation happens almost naturally. Alongside personal growth comes the building of brotherhood. In order to gain value within yourself, you must be willing to invest in others. Our program pushes young men to construct not only themselves, but relationships with one another that will last a lifetime. Pledging the Kappa Sigma Fraternity creates a bond between young men that can only be experienced.

Our Pledge Program is designed to help these young men understand what it means be a gentleman of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and to become just that. It is a process many men have gone through, and have greatly benefited. Having the responsibility of Head Pledge Educator and being able to lead a group of individuals to become men of Kappa Sigma is something that will always stick with me. I will be forever thankful that I was able to receive this position. ~ JARED BRYANT

Social Report

The Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma is the best in many areas: academics, networking, lifelong brotherhood, friendship, and a social scene that is second to none. Kappa Sigma has had the premier social calendar on campus for many years, and will continue to do so. During the 2016-2017 school year we continued the tradition. This year we pursued higher standards than ever before by pushing to be the most socially active fraternity on campus. You will find that most brothers agree that we did reach those standards, and even surpassed them.

Our social calendar began in the fall with our famous camping function, Southern Skies, which began in 1991. This event is loved by many members and their dates. Over 250 brothers and their dates head out to Hog Ridge Hollow – with tents and blankets in tow – for the memorable night. Live bands, Toxic Rhythms and Ouachita River Boys, played throughout the night kept warm by our massive bonfire.

Our fall was not your typical fall here at Kappa Sigma. Our SemiFormal was switched to the spring, while our Formal moved into the fall calendar this year. Formal was quite the trip for members and their dates this past year. Fayetteville’s Finest took on the famous Bourbon St. in New Orleans.

For Xi Chapter, spring semester is a very busy time of the year when it comes to social functions. We see us start off our spring with our semi-formal, which was a nice trip down to Oaklawn for the horse races. Our Semi-Formal was new to the spring calendar, but it fit just fine within the schedule. Oaklawn treated our members and their dates to a good time, even though a few may have lost money.

Moving on to another member favorite – our Caddy Shack inspired Fratty Shack function. Members and dates enjoyed themselves over a two-night period. The first is a date night and the second night we had a live band at the House.

To finish out our busy spring semester comes the biggest party of the year, Row. Over Friday night and Saturday day we all unite as a Greek Community to have fun. Friday night is spent as a separate date night for Kappa Sigma, and then we all unite after a crawfish boil for a festival-style concert. This year we had a live band at the House for our date night, and on Saturday we all were treated to performances by D.J. Paul, Rick Ross, and Louis the Child.

Our executive committee with other dedicated members were able to pull off a fantastic social calendar. It was truly unforgettable. Xi Chapter is already excited for next year’s social calendars for the fall and spring. We strive to be the best house year in and year out.

Our great social calendar helps to achieve that goal.

Philanthropy Report

This year as a fraternity we continued to give back to the community. Toward that goal, we focus on two main fundraisers here at Kappa Sigma, our volleyball tournament, and Flying Hogs. We also volunteer for other charity events including Chilirhea (pictured above) and Bikes Blues & BBQ. Our volleyball tournament is put on every year during the spring semester.

The tournament is held at the house, and we bring in sponsors to help us raise money as well. Our tournament proceeds go to Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Flying Hogs was a program started in 2013 by Brothers Michael Sloane and Brandon Breard. The program aims to help college students receive their pilot license while in school here at the University. Since inception, just under $50,000 has been raised for Flying Hogs. They have provided funding for 12 students to go through the program, six of whom have been fellow Kappa Sigs.

Leadership Conference Report Xi Chapter sent eight Brothers to Orlando, Florida for the weekend of July 22-24, 2016. The Xi Chapter won several awards including the Founders’ Award of Chapter Excellence, Greater Cause Champion for Hours Award, Chapter Academic Excellence Award, Top 25 Recruiting Chapters, and Champion Chapter (#1 recruiting chapter in the nation).

Intramural Report

Kappa Sigma intramurals had a great year with multiple teams across several sports. Xi experienced exceptional success during the spring semester, particularly in the realm of basketball. Kappa Sigma fielded teams that won the A Division of the basketball league, SAE’s philanthropy basketball tournament, and Kappa Kappa Gamma’s King of the Kourt tournament. We also fielded teams in softball and football.

Xi is very proud of the performances our members put on the fields this year. We look forward to more championships in the 2017-2018 year!

A H I STO RY O F X I C H A PT E R Since its founding on May 29, 1890, Xi Chapter has housed many great leaders, scholars, and humanitarians, making it the most storied and oldest fraternity on this campus.

Originally, the Xi Chapter was founded at the Virginia Military Institute in 1874, but after a ban of fraternities at VMI, the Xi Chapter was shut down after ten short years. Years later, a young dentist by the name of Dr. Charles Richardson, an Emory and Henry College initiate moved to Fayetteville in 1888 to take over a retiring dentist practice.

Two years later, in the spring of 1890, he recruited John Clinton Futrall, Carl Clinton Miller, William Alfred Crawford, William Shields Goodwin, and George Bernard Pugh, the first initiates of the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma.

The success of the first five initiates carried on throughout Kappa Sigma history as John E. Martineau (1894) later became the Governor of Arkansas and Samuel B. Hill (1894) later became a Congressman and a Federal Judge.

Claris G. “Crip” Hall was a member of the fraternity in 1922 and was the founder of Homecoming at the U of A. Hall later served as Arkansas’ Secretary of State for twenty-five years.

Lost Stories

Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma is the oldest fraternity on the University of Arkansas campus and the second oldest, continuously active Kappa Sigma chapter in the country.

On May 29, 1890, Dr. Charles Richardson of Omicron chapter (Emory & Henry), initiated our first three members John C. Futrall, William A. Crawford, and Carl C. Miller. On June 6, they initiated William S. Goodwin and George B. Pugh. These five founders, along with Richardson, laid the foundation for the chapter and association we enjoy today.

Through our history, we have become the largest chapter of any fraternity in the US – we have initiated more men than any chapter of any fraternity – anywhere!

Xi Chapter has still had near misses – men who were associated or pledged our chapter, but who were not ultimately initiated. Our national fraternity has one honorary initiate – Jefferson Davis, the former United States Senator and the President of the Confederacy.

He accepted membership into the chapter where his son was initiated without going through the initiatory.

At Xi Chapter, we have had many who pledged and for one reason or another did not get initiated. Most of these men went on to live productive, fruitful lives. A few dared to excel far beyond anything they could have imagined during their days in Fayetteville. Many of these stories are lost in time.

Joseph Taylor Robinson, Howard “Red” Hickey, and Charles Allen “Charlie” Rich each were affiliated with Xi Chapter in some way during their lives, but never were initiated into the Order.

to Congress in 1902, as Governor in 1912, and to the U.S. Senate in 1913, Robinson was on his way. He became the Senate Minority Leader in 1923, was Vice Presidential nominee in 1928, and became Senate Majority leader from 1933 until his death in 1937.

Robinson’s brother Edward was initiated in 1894. Other family members who are Xi initiates include his nephews, Joseph Taylor Robinson II (1918), William Thomas Robinson (1924), and Charles Albert Walls, Sr. (1906); and, brotherin-law H. Grady Miller (1906) – his wife’s brother. Joe T also befriended and was a life-long mentor of John E. Martineau (1894), also of Lonoke, who was elected Governor in 1926.

JOSEPH TAYLOR ROBINSON , known as Joe T,

attended Arkansas Industrial University from 1890 through 1892, when he returned to Lonoke to study law under Judge Thomas Trimble. He attended law school at the University of Virginia and graduated in 1895.

Following his 1894 election to the Arkansas legislature, Robinson quickly rose in office and notoriety. Elections

Hickeytown native HOWARD “RED” HICKEY was in a group of football players who pledged at Xi Chapter in 1940 and 1941. Hickey was captain of the football team, captain of the 1941 basketball team that reached the Final 4, was the manager in baseball, and was a heavy weight boxing champion. A formidable athlete, Red was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round of 1941.

Following a stint in the US Navy, Hickey returned to play on the Cleveland Rams 1945 World Championship team – alongside Xi Chapter initiate and NFL star Jim Benton (1937).

Hickey served as an assistant coach for the Rams (1949-54) and the San Francisco 49ers from 1955-57. He became head coach of the 49ers in 1958 – they contended for the league title in his first year. Hickey coached for San Francisco until the 1963 season.

He is the first person to play in the Final 4, play five seasons in the NFL and serve as Head Coach in the NFL for five seasons.

He joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1964 and remained with the cowboys until the mid-1980s where he served as an assistant coach and a scout for nearly twenty years. In 1975, the Cowboys dusted off one of Hickey’s offensive formations – commonly referred to as the shotgun – and it remains popular in the NFL today.

On March 11, 1929, Porter Grace (1927) made a motion during Xi’s chapter meeting to initiate Senator Robinson into the fraternity. While Robinson was receptive to the idea, George Vaughan (1891) attended the next meeting and reported this type of initiation was “unconstitutional.”

Whether the rules had changed or were misinterpreted

by Vaughan, Xi Chapter missed out on initiating one of the most prominent Arkansas politicians in its history.

Quite often in Hickey’s era, athletes didn’t have money for things like fraternity dues and were subsequently not initiated. In a 2017 interview, his son Jeffrey Hickey said his dad didn’t own more than one pair of shoes until he was 18.

Pete Cato (1941) is the only one from this group who was initiated. Red was a pledge for two years and appeared on two of our composites (1940-41). He even appeared in the March 1955 Caduceus of Kappa Sigma where he was recognized as a member of Xi Chapter.

The 1950s was an exceptional time for Xi Chapter. In the fall of 1951, Charles Albright was Grand Master, Charlie Jones was a cheerleader and in law school, and Charlie Rich was a Kappa Sigma pledge.

CHARLIE RICH

was born in Colt, Arkansas and graduated from Forrest City High School, where he played saxophone and football. Rich had enrolled at Arkansas State on a football scholarship. When an injury cut that short, he quickly transferred to Fayetteville.

As a pledge, Charlie spent more time at the piano in the Xi Chapter living room then he did in class – even spending time trying to compose a song with Charlie Jones - the future NBC sportscaster. Rich only lasted one semester in Fayetteville. He joined the Air Force where he continued to refine his skills in the band he created called the Velvetones. After his discharge, he returned to the West Memphis area where he spent days farming and nights kicking around the Memphis music scene.

Like many before him, he hooked up with Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Initially a session musician on records by Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and others, he had limited success as a recording artist. Over the next 10 years, his career was up and down then Epic gave him a chance. He followed Rock-n-Roll artist Jerry Lee Lewis and Conway Twitty who were finding a home in Country Music.

In 1973, Rich released “Behind Closed Doors” and the rest is history. He died unexpectedly in 1995 while traveling to watch his son play in a concert in Florida.

Many Xi Chapter initiates from his era remember the Silver Fox and tell stores of seeing him at different events in Arkansas. Unfortunately, he never made it back to 711 W. Dickson.

Like many others, Robinson, Hickey, and Rich missed their opportunity to join Xi Chapter. Lost to generations of Xi Chapter initiates, these stories remind us of those who time has forgotten and further illustrates how Xi Chapter remains one of the most storied chapters on any campus in America.

Today, Xi Chapter can petition the Supreme Executive Committee of Kappa Sigma to initiate an alumnus. In 2015, at our 125th anniversary, Xi Chapter initiated U.S. Senator John Boozman and four other U of A Alumni who had been associated with Xi Chapter.

WWI 100 years later WILLIAM HEBER MCLAUGHLIN Xi initiate was the first US officer wounded in WWI World War I, or the Great War, was two years old when the United States entered on the side of Great Britain, France, and their allies. On every college campus and in towns across the nation, American men signed up to go fight.

Heber McLaughlin (1901) had been back on his family’s Lonoke County plantation for nearly 15 years when World War I broke out in Europe. Like many Dough Boys, he was off to fight the Germans and to save our European friends.

Heber was in the first class of officers at the new officer training camp at Fort Roots (located in Pulaski County) in April of 1917. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in August and a month later sailed for France. After additional training with the British in trench warfare, he was assigned to Company F, Sixteenth Infantry, First American Division. In late October, he accompanied his battalion with the French to the front. Just a few days later, November 3rd, the German’s attacked his battalion on the Rhine-Marne canal in a night attack.

McLaughlin was knocked down four times by cannon fire and was wounded when a piece of shrapnel struck his helmet. He was also gassed. Three Americans were killed and 11 wounded in the attack; these were the first casualties for American forces.

Lt. McLaughlin was awarded the French Croix de Guerre. The injury left him disabled, and he returned to America. While he begged to be shipped back to his unit, he was promoted to Captain and was used for training of recruits at training camps.

After his December 1918 discharge, he returned to his plantation where he took up farming again. The gas severely injured his lungs and he was never back to full health. On June 14, 1921, Arkansas Kappa Sigmas had a reunion at the Marion Hotel in Little Rock where Brother McLaughlin was the honored guest.

Heber served in the Arkansas General Assembly from 1923-26.

His daughter Patricia was born in 1930. Heber died at the age of 49 on May 28, 1931.

Patricia “Pat” McLaughlin would later marry Xi initiate Robert McKinley Lowe (1951) who served as Senator Bill Fulbright’s Press Secretary and also Undersecretary of Commerce under President Lyndon Johnson, where he oversaw the Fairness Doctrine. Pat resides in Memphis. Brother Lowe passed away in 2011.

The number of men from Xi Chapter who served in World War I is not known. We do know that Baxter Paul Ware (1897) of Hot Springs, and William Boykin Boone (1916) of Lonoke, lost their lives serving during the war.

Outstanding Alumnus

Long before the days of the Internet, iPhones, laptops, tablets, and WiFi, Joe Henson was a high-tech computer executive and CEO for leading edge computer manufacturers. Fort Smith native Joe Henson spent 27 years at IBM before leading two publicly traded companies in the 1980s and 90s.

Today’s undergraduates can only read about the days when mainframes took up an entire room, microcomputers were a growing market, IBM was still selling Selectric typewriters, and personal computers remained in the future. Henson’s career centered in the middle of the evolution from tubes to transistors to silicon chips and the digital age.

Joe Mack Henson was born and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He graduated from Fort Smith Northside High School in 1950. Joe was initiated October 15, 1951 with 22 other men. It was the time between World War II and the Korean War. Xi Chapter was in a truly remarkable period of its existence – Charlie Rich, the future Country Music Legend, was even a pledge living at 711 W. Dickson in the fall of 1951.

Before Dell, Apple, and HP dominated the personal computer market, IBM was the standard and everything else was a clone. Joe joined IBM when he graduated from the University of Arkansas where he held numerous positions with IBM, including: Vice-President of Sales for the Eastern third of the U.S., Vice-President of Industry Marketing, Vice-President of Market Planning, VicePresident of the General Products Division (Engineering and Manufacturing).

In 1981, Joe did what many weren’t doing at that time: he left IBM for another company. Joe was recruited to Prime Computer, based in Boston, to serve as President and CEO. He held this position from 1981 until 1988. During that time, Prime grew from a respectable $365 million in annual sales to over $1.6 billion. The mini-computer market was growing and would be overtaken by the personal computer market in the 1990s; however, the systems were integral at that time and were much less expensive than the mainframes.

To put that in perspective, Microsoft, Inc. recorded $17 million in sales in 1981 and grew to $590.8 million in 1988.

Prime’s five-fold increase in sales was a testament to Joe’s ability to manage the business through rapid expansion.

Upon his departure, Prime Computer Chairman David Dunn said, “Under Joe’s leadership, Prime has grown from $365 million in revenue to over $1.6 billion today and has been widely regarded as one of the best-managed companies in the industry.”

During his retirement, the 55-year-old Henson played golf, built a home in Florida, and traveled. While busy with leisure activities and serving on several corporate boards, Joe was looking for a new adventure. “I began to realize that this wasn’t the level of intensity and excitement that really stimulates me and began to think in terms of going back into management.” It was in 1989 that Joe was named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Legent Corporation, based in Vienna, Virginia.

Legent developed Systems Management Software to manage the various components of large enterprise IT systems including network management. While networking is taken for granted today, this functionality was prior to the widespread launch of the internet and cellular technology.

In the five years Joe served as chairman of Legent, annual revenue increased from $125 million to more than $625 million. In the same year Joe retired, Legent was acquired

by Computer Associates (CA) for almost $2 billion. At the time, this was the second largest software company acquisition in history behind Microsoft’s acquisition of Lotus Development Corporation.

Following his retirement from Legent, Joe transitioned to a venture capital investor with General Atlantic Partners and individually until 2008. During his career, Joe also served on many public corporate boards including the Bank of Boston, 1st National Bank of Boston, BJ Wholesale Club, Promus Company (owned Hampton Inns, Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites), Policy Management Systems, Sequoia Computer Company, and Caesar’s Entertainment Company. During his years in venture capital he was an investor in numerous private companies, and served as a board member.

Joe has always been involved and interested in education and civic activities. He has served on the boards of several

universities including the Board of Regents of Higher Education for the State of Massachusetts, Corporate Board of Babson College, Trustee of Howard University, and as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee for Higher Education for the State of Arkansas.

Joe and his wife, Mary Kay, have also dedicated themselves to eliminating the literacy gap that separates low-income children from their peers. Joe and Mary Kay started a pilot program in Alta Vista Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida, to help alleviate the “Summer Slide” that many lowincome children experience during their summer break.

With Principal Dr. Barbara Shirley, the Hensons founded the Alta Vista Eagle Academy in 2012. The program includes seven weeks of summer academic classes, a full time social worker, a mandatory parent university, and an afternoon enrichment program. It begins with prekindergarten and provides year round schooling through the 3rd grade.

The academic achievement of the 350 students was so compelling that the Sarasota County School System took over the program and are in the process of extending it to

the other poverty stricken elementary schools in the district.

When fully implemented, over 4,000 K-3 students will be in school year round.

The Henson’s have now made a three-year grant to the school system to fund two classes for four-year-old children at another poverty elementary school.

In the 66 years since his initiation, Joe Henson has excelled in everything he has done. Joe is part of a Kappa Sigma family. His brother William R. “Bill” Henson, Sr. (1953), greatnephew William R. Henson, III (2002), and great-nephew Andrew P. Henson (2003) are all Xi initiates.

Xi Chapter congratulates Joe on his lifetime of achievements and is proud to name him our Charles L. Massey Alumni Man-of-the-Year for 2017.

The Xi Chapter Alumni Man-of-the-Year has been awarded for more than 70 years. The name of the award was changed in 1985 in honor of the 1984 Kappa Sigma International Man-of-the-Year Charles L. Massey, Jr. (1941); Massey is the former National President of the Mach of Dimes Foundation.

Outstanding Young Alumni CARL AND CHARLES GEORGE

Charles and Carl George (2002) are co-CEOs of Springdale based George’s, Inc. From the outside, most would believe that the co-CEOs were destined to lead their family business. Carl and Charles George are the fourth generation of the George family to guide the business their great-grandfather C.L. George began 96 years ago. Like their father and grandfather before them, they began working in different areas of the business as young men before being named to lead the business by their father.

Gary George, who became President of George’s in 1980 at the age of 30, wanted his sons to choose the family business, instead of having it thrust upon them. He had his sons write down their top 5 career choices. Once they had decided they wanted to join the family business, Carl & Charles followed their father’s advice and attended school at the University of Arkansas.

When preparing for the positions they now hold, both Carl and Charles, worked all over the company to learn how it operated and to give them perspective. It may have been their grandfather’s guidance that they “have to be involved in the details of the company”, which they followed, that prepared them for the positions they hold today. They also had great teachers within the company’s leadership to work with.

“I expected to work in the family business. Our family is very close and we not only enjoy working with each other, but being around each other, as well,” said Charles George. “I have tremendous respect for his business acumen.”

“Charles and I have high expectations for ourselves and for each other. We know each other better than anyone and that is a big advantage for us as co-CEOs”, Carl George said.

George’s is one of the largest privately held companies in Arkansas with annual sales of nearly $1 billion.

Carl has been with George’s since 1997 and is responsible for leading all live production and plant operations. He serves on the board of the National Chicken Council and is a member of the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association.

Carl received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas.

Charles also has been with George’s since 1997 and international sales, accounting, human resources, quality assurance and purchasing. He serves on the board of the Arkansas Poultry Federation and the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and is a member of the National Chicken Council. Charles also received his B.S.B.A. from Walton College of Business.

Both men give credit to their team for the success of the company. They work together with their own strengths to guide the company. “Carl and I complement each other very well regarding our approach to business. Honestly, we spend more time encouraging each other than challenging each other. Certainly, we will have healthy debate to gain alignment around particular issues, but our goals and vision for George’s are the same,” Charles said.

Both men credit their brother-in-law, Patrick Swope, and some of Patrick’s friends and contemporaries when they were going through rush. They pledged in the fall of 2001 and were initiated January 19, 2002. When asked about his undergraduate memories, Carl said “the entire three years I lived in the house and the time spent with my Kappa Sig brothers are some of my favorite memories and the ones that I still talk about most today.”

Charles’ advice for today’s undergraduates: “Make the most of your time in class and in the house. The time goes by fast, so wherever you are spending your time, make the most of it.”

Carl and Charles were elected to Arkansas Business’ 40 under 40 in 2015 and join an outstanding group of Xi Chapter’s Young Alumni who are making a difference in business, politics, and civic affairs.

Campus Leaders MAC SIMPSON Mac Simpson is a graduating Senior Finance / Supply Chain Management major.

A native of McKinney, Texas, Mac maintains above a 3.1 GPA and is very involved in the House and Greek life. Mac served as Grand Treasurer in 2015 and is also involved in College Republicans, College Conservatives, Interfraternity Council, and Greek Men’s Leadership Institute. In the past Mac has served as the Texas Rush Chairman and on Xi’s Financial Committee.

COLIN CARR Colin Carr, a graduating Senior from Paragould, Arkansas, is a Pre-Medical Psychology major in the Fulbright Honors College of Arts and Sciences. On campus, Colin is involved in College Republicans, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Student Mobilization. During spring break, he went to Nicaragua with Global Medical Brigades to give medical assistance to the underprivileged. Colin graduated in May with a 3.87 GPA and is applying for medical school for the 2018-19 school year. Colin has also received the Grover C. Morris Award from the Xi Alumni Association for maintaining the highest grade point average in his pledge class.

PIERCE PHILLIPS Pierce Phillips is a graduating Senior member of Xi Chapter. Pierce, from Springdale, is a Finance major in Walton College, with a minor in Political Science. Active in campus politics, Pierce was treasurer of the College Republicans, Vice President of Recruitment for IFC, and serves on the Office of Financial Affairs student board. He lost the Associated Student Government treasurer’s position in a runoff last year. Pierce has served as Risk Management Chairman for Xi Chapter and maintained a 3.13 during his college career.

RICHARD ANDREW ANDELIN Richard is a Junior from Tulsa, Oklahoma, majoring in Supply Chain Management with a minor in Marketing. Richard is active in the Finance Club, the Gaming Club, and Leadership Walton. At Xi Chapter, he has served as Risk Management Chairman, as a Judicial Board Member, and as Assistant Pledge Trainer. He currently maintains a 3.65 GPA.

ERIC JETER Eric Jeter, a native of Austin, Texas, is a graduating Senior Political Science major with a minor in Geography. Eric currently holds a 3.54 GPA while being a cadet in Army ROTC. He has participated in the Buddy Ranger Challenge Team all four years and was team leader as a Senior. He was also the Public Affairs Officer for the detachment. He served as Assistant Pledge Trainer and on the Scholarship and Philanthropy Committees. Eric was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant US Army following graduation.

SAWYER ESCH Sophomore Sawyer Esch is a Pre-Med student who maintains a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Chemistry. Esch has been involved on Student Philanthropy Council and the Arkansas Phone Campaign on campus. He is the recipient of the Arkansas Service Scholarship, Evonik Jayhawks Fine Chemicals Scholarship, and the Arkansas PPA Book Scholarship.

ADAM JONES Adam is a Senior Finance and Accounting major from Fayetteville, Arkansas in the Walton Honors College. He holds a 3.83 GPA and has been on both the Dean’s List and Chancellor’s List. Adam has been involved with Finance Club, Beta Alpha Psi, New Greek Council, Freshman Leadership Forum, and is currently a board member for the Office of Financial Affairs. Within the Xi Chapter, Adam has served as Pledge Class Treasurer, Community Service Chair, Campus Involvement Chair and also was a member of Scholarship Committee, Risk Management Committee, Row Week Committee, and Social Committee.

RUSTY JACKSON Rusty Jackson from Wynne, Arkansas, is a graduating Senior and Finance major in the Walton Honors College. Rusty served as the President of Xi Chapter in 2016 and has served as House Manager, Judicial Board Chair, Scholarship Committee Member, Risk Management Chair, Row Week Chair, Assistant Pledge Trainer, and as Grand Procurator.

There are very few members that have put as much effort and as many hours into making Xi Chapter successful. Rusty is also involved in Delta Waterfowl, Ducks Unlimited, Finance Club, and IFC. Rusty graduated in December with a 3.44 GPA.

CONNOR SMALLING Connor, a Junior from Little Rock, is Pre-Med while double-majoring in Biological Engineering and Economics with a minor in Sustainability. Connor maintains a 3.73 GPA. Connor is an Eagle Scout who is still highly involved as a Scout Leader.

Over the summer, he led a crew on a 70 mile backpacking trip through the southern Rockies. He is a University of Arkansas Honors College Fellow and Governor’s Distinguished Scholar.

NICK MYERS Myers is a Junior from Nashville, Arkansas, who is majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Nick maintains a 3.55 GPA while being involved in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the National Society of Leadership and Success.

PIERCE JONES Pierce Jones is a Finance major from Memphis. Jones serves Xi Chapter as Scholarship Chair and has been an IFC Rho Chi. Additionally, Pierce is the President of UARK Fly Fishers, Campus Manager for Liefstylez Productions and is active in Leadership Walton.

DAVIS MILLS Davis Mills is a Senior graduating with a BSBA in Finance, with a minor in Accounting and Economics. Mills, from Flower Mound, Texas, has held several offices at Xi Chapter, including Academic Chair, Assistant Pledge Trainer, Awards Committee Member, Judicial Board Member and on the Risk Management Committee. On campus, Davis has been involved in Leadership Walton, Walton Honors College, Walton Finance Association, and Model United Nations. Mills currently has a 3.93 GPA.

Campus Leaders SCOTT SIMS Scott Sims is a Senior Finance and Accounting double major from McGehee. He is enrolled in the Walton Honors College. Scott averages 20+ hours a semester while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. On campus, Scott has served as a Lead Hog, the Walton College Finance Association, ASG Senator, member of Leadership Walton, Honor’s College Peer Mentor, as a tutor at Campus Concierge, and as a member of the Student Alumni Board. Scott narrowly lost the election for ASG President in the spring of 2017.

Previously, he served as Executive Treasurer for the Walton College Finance Association.

Scott spent five weeks in the summer of 2015 studying at the University of Arkansas Rome Center. In the summer of 2017, Scott studied in India. Scott is an Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholar. At Xi Chapter, Scott has served as Grand Treasurer and Academic Chair.

NABIL BHIMANI Nabil is a Sophomore, originally from Chicago, studying Political Science in the Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences. In addition to his involvement at Xi Chapter, Nabil service as a Senator in the Associated Student Government. Bhimani maintains a 3.26 GPA.

CONNOR TRUITT Junior Connor Truitt has been active in both the chapter and on campus. Truitt is a Finance major in the Walton College where he maintains a 3.79 GPA. Connor is the current Academic Chairman, has served on the Scholarship Committee, Judicial Board, and Risk Management Committee. On campus, he is part of Leadership Walton, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, The National Society of Leadership and Success, and the ALPFA Club. Truitt has been on the Dean’s list every semester of his college career.

HENRY STRATTON This rising Sophomore has been very active on the University of Arkansas campus.

Henry is a Finance major from Memphis who maintains a 4.0 GPA. On campus, he is involved in the Real Estate Club, where he is a committee chair, Leadership Walton, and as an on-campus tutor through the Class+ program. Stratton is in the Walton Honors Business program and National Society of Leadership and Success. He is a recipient of the Kyle Kiihnl Memorial scholarship.

GRAYSON DILLINGHAM Grayson is a Biology/Pre-Dental major in the Fulbright Honors College. This past year Grayson ended the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.77. He is involved in the Biology Club and Dental Club on campus. At Xi Chapter, Dillingham serves as the Grand Master of Ceremonies. He also served on the Risk Management Committee as well as the Social Committee for Xi Chapter – planning and organizing social events.

MATT SCHOENFELDER Matt is majoring in Accounting and Finance. On campus, Matt is part of Leadership Walton, Associated Student Government, Beta Alpha Psi, the Finance Club, and serves as an Honors College Ambassador. Within the house he served as Grand Procurator (Vice President), a member of Risk Management and the Judicial Board. Matt maintains a 4.0 GPA.

COLIN BYRD Colin Byrd is a Senior from Kansas City, Missouri, who is majoring in Political Science & International Relations with a minor in Southern Studies. He is enrolled in the J. William Fulbright Honors College where he maintains a 3.58 GPA. On campus, Colin is a senator in the Associated Student Government, has served as Vice President of the Pre-Law Society, is a member of College Republicans, Italian Club, Lead Hogs, and Student Mobilization.

At Xi Chapter, Colin currently serves as Grand Master. Previously, he served as Grand Scribe and Risk Management Chairman. He has been on the Dean’s list two semesters and received many scholarship and awards. These include: Emil M. and Pearl K. Larson Internship Scholarship, Honors College Traditional Study Abroad Grant, Sturgis Study Abroad Grant, Charles B. Whiteside Scholarship, Thomas J. Williams Scholarship – Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund. In the summer of 2016, Colin interned for Missouri Congressman Sam Graves. In the summer of 2017, Colin studied at the London School of Economics.

BEN PINTER Little Rock native Ben Pinter is a Junior majoring in Biology with a 3.45 GPA. He is active in the Pre-Dental Society and the Biology club. He is the recipient of the ADHE Governors Distinguished Scholarship and the University of Arkansas Leadership Scholarship. Ben has been Assistant Rush Chairman and Head Rush Chairman.

MASON LESTER Mason is a graduating Senior from Wichita, Kansas, who received a BSBA in Finance from the Walton College of Business. Lester served two years as a Rho Chi, with the one year as Head Rho Chi. He also served as Vice President of Community Service for the Interfraternity Council. He represented Walton College in Associated Student Government as a Senator.

Mason earned a 3.38 GPA.

HUNTER HASTINGS Hastings is a Junior from Bentonville. He is a Finance major in Walton College with a 3.15 GPA. Hunter is the current Philanthropy Chair at Xi Chapter. On campus, he has been active in the Walton College Finance Association, Walton College Transportation and Logistics Association, and the UARK Fly Fishers Club.

EVAN WAICBERG Waicberg is a Sophomore from Frisco, Texas, majoring in Business Management. He maintains a 3.4 GPA in the Walton College of Business. Waicberg has served as Legacy Rush Chairman and on both the Social Committee and Ritual Committee. On Campus, Evan is part of Leadership Walton and he is active in Intramurals. He has been working an Telehealth Sales Internship at Vidyo, Inc.

RYAN POHLKAMP Ryan is a Sophomore Biology major from Little Rock. Ryan served as Awards Chairman for Xi Chapter while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Pohlkamp is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and the Biology Club. He is an Honors College Fellow and an Arkansas Governor’s Scholar. Ryan was on the Chancellor’s List in both the fall and the spring.

Philip S. Anderson 1 9 9 8 M A N- O F - THE-Y EA R

Philip S. Anderson, Jr. (’54) is the most recent of Xi Chapter’s five initiates to earn Kappa Sigma’s International Man-of-the-Year award. Anderson was honored for his election as President of the American Bar Association for the 1998-1999 term. Phil has spent his life in the law, from 1960 when he began his practice with the Wright, Lindsey, Jennings in Little Rock to his practice today with his firm, Williams & Anderson.

Prior to his election as President of the American Bar Association, Phil had dedicated a considerable amount of time to the organization, serving on its governing body, the House of Delegates, since 1979. In addition to his activities with the ABA, Anderson serves on the American Law Institute, which promulgates model laws for the states, and he served on its governing council from 1982 until 2010, when he became an emeritus member of the Council.

At the University of Arkansas and Xi Chapter in the mid to late 1950’s, there were few who matched Brother Anderson’s accomplishments on campus and in the chapter. Anderson is part of a very large Kappa Sigma family from Eastern Arkansas – the Bransford, Fletcher, Walt, and Anderson’s have 36 Kappa Sigma initiates (all but three are from Xi Chapter).

Phil served Xi as Grand Scribe, Rush Chairman and Grand Master. Brother Anderson was the editor of the 1955 Kappa Sigma Rush Brochure – Kappa Sigma at Arkansas. The 1955 publication is the model for the Xi Chapter Annual Report which began in 1991 and is in its 26th year of publication.

On campus, he was President of the Interfraternity Council, President of Blue Key Honor Society, and Editor in Chief of the 1956 Razorback. He was a member of Phi Eta Sigma, a freshman honor society, and Editor in Chief of the Arkansas Law Review. He was also active in the ROTC. Following a long career with the Wright, Lindsey & Jennings law firm, Anderson withdrew from the firm with his former pledge brother Jackson Williams to form the firm Williams & Anderson in 1988, where they practice today.

Anderson has been active in the Little Rock community serving on numerous boards and foundations including Little Rock Unlimited Progress, the Central Arkansas Library System, the George W. Donaghey Foundation, and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Parish.

Over the last five editions of the Xi Chapter Annual Report, the five Xi Chapter initiates to receive the Kappa Sigma International Man-of-the-Year have been featured. We look forward to featuring new recipients in the years to come.

It is hard to believe that four years has gone by and I am now an Alumnus of the University of Arkansas. I was born and raised in Fayetteville, and had always dreamed of being a Razorback but it wasn’t until late in high school, that I realized I wanted to be in a fraternity. This proved to be one of the best decisions I could have made, as I now live and work with guys I met at Kappa Sigma. I can honestly say that some of the great guys I have met at Kappa Sigma still influence me today as much as they did during pledgeship.

When one signs onto this fraternity, they are expected to excel in all areas, whether that is in the classroom, intramurals, or any social event.

As a Kappa Sigma you are expected by the entire campus to be the best. And at 18 years old, just starting a college career, there is no better feeling. Being a part of Kappa Sigma opened doors to friendships I had never experienced before. I was introduced to leaders who not only wanted to have an impact; they wanted that impact to continue once their time was up.

Experience

Some of my greatest memories have happened at the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma. While there are many I could talk about, one situation in particular stands out to me. I was 19 years old trying to juggle grades, pledging, and earning a pilot license. One morning Brandon Breard, who was two years older, asked me to come to his room. Brandon had already received his pilot license, and wanted other Kappa Sigmas to be able to do the same. So he came up with a bold idea. Brandon said to me, “Let’s raise $25,000 and start an aviation program at the University of Arkansas”. I played along with it, but in no way did I think it was possible.

But a year later Brandon pushed myself and others to raise $25,000, and we started a flying club for University of Arkansas students and Kappa Sigmas. Three years since inception, this club has produced 9 pilots and counting. Men with vision such as Brandon are just one of the many reasons I am proud to be a part of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

Any person who chooses to pledge the Kappa Sigma Fraternity has the ability to grow, mature, and learn from many of the best that the University of Arkansas has to offer. When you are put with 60 other pledges, you get to experience all different emotions through four years, but no matter what you are going through you will never be alone. This is obviously true of other fraternities as well. If you want the opportunity to grow with the brightest, hardest working, and most honest people on campus, there is no other place you’ll find the quality of men that Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma builds.

Putting four years of experiences into words is very tough. However, Kappa Sigma is not about four years; Kappa Sigma is about a lifetime.

Today, in the local workforce in Northwest Arkansas, I have had the opportunity to work with many guys from Kappa Sigma. Some of these guys are older than me, and many are younger, but we all share that commitment to excellence that we learned in our first days of pledgeship. I have learned from experience that every Kappa Sigma member has the duty of giving back to those who come after him; just as those older guys helped me, I plan to pass it down. It is amazing to watch and be a part of bettering and growing our brothers. As Kappa Sigmas, we hold each other to a higher standard. One who experiences 711 West Dickson will forever be a part of a special group of men. The memories will last a lifetime.

Xi Educational Foundation

Xi Foundation was established in 1987 for the benefit of undergraduates of Xi Chapter at the University of Arkansas. Over the last 30 years, Xi Foundation has raised more the $2.5 million dollars from alumni and friends that have made it possible to underwrite undergraduate programs, chapter house improvements for educational purposes, undergraduates who attend fraternity leadership conferences and conclaves, our Man-of-the-Year Speaker Series at the University of Arkansas, and scholarships for deserving undergraduates.

CURRENT PROGRAMS The Xi Educational Foundation of Arkansas currently provides scholarships and leadership training through named programs. We will continue to offer naming opportunities for the benefit of the chapter or undergraduates as the opportunities are presented to us. Since 1990, Xi Foundation has been offering scholarships to our undergraduate members, a distinguished lecture series, and leadership training in the form of cash awards or grants to help them defray any of the educational expenses.

At our 125th anniversary celebration in 2015, we offered multiple giving vehicles to allow your gift to support leadership and scholastic development of Xi Chapter undergraduates long into the future. Your planned gift could also provide you with present and future tax benefits and lifelong income.

CHARLES B WHITESIDE SCHOLARSHIP FUND In honor of the tireless efforts of Charlie Whiteside, III (1960), Xi Corporation, in conjunction with Xi Foundation, created the Charles B. Whiteside Scholarship Fund. This fund awards cash scholarships each semester to deserving undergraduates. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholarship, leadership, campus involvement and service.

MAN-OF-THE-YEAR DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES Xi Foundation created the Man-of-the-Year lecture series as part of our Xi Project 2000 campaign. This lectures series awards $2,500 per year to the undergraduate college of the five alumni who have been named Kappa Sigma’s International Man-of-the-Year. These men are Thomas J. Williams (1910), Fulbright College Arts & Sciences; Charles L. Massey, Jr. (1941), Walton College of Business; E Fay Jones (1939), Fay Jones School of Architecture; Jerral W. Jones, Jr. (1963), Walton College of Business; and Philip S. Anderson, Jr. (1953), School of Law. Every year, on a rotating basis, one of the colleges receives this grant in honor alumnus of their college.

D. MALCOLM MCNAIR, JR. LEADERSHIP PROGRAM During Xi Chapter’s 125th anniversary celebration (Xi125), the D. Malcolm McNair, Jr. (1969) Leadership Program was established and is now funded to provide leadership and career training for Xi Chapter upper classmen.

Academic

REPORT

The Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma prides itself in academic achievement.

Our GPA in the fall was 3.048 and rose to a 3.07 by the end of the spring.

Our continued partnership with Campus Concierge, a tutoring company in Fayetteville, has brought us a unique opportunity to continue to achieve success.

Campus Concierge grants us the ability to schedule tutoring sessions to help members. Members can schedule private sessions, small group sessions, or large group sessions. This tutoring plays a significant role in helping Kappa Sigma pursue academic achievement. Campus Concierge also is a major player in our Pledge Education Program. Campus Concierge proctors weekly study halls and sends weekly reports to our Academic Chair outlining the success of each individual. The member reviews of Campus Concierge are extremely positive. Anyone who is on academic probation must also attend study halls, and must meet with Campus Concierge about improving their current grade situation.

For the third school year in a row our scholarship committee has also helped push members and pledges towards academic success. The 12 members that make up the committee are assigned to a group of pledges to aid and guide them through a successful first year of college. This helps to ensure a smooth transition for students new to college. Being under such a program the pledges are held honest on their grade situation. It helps to keep them focused on academics.

For several years now, the Charlie B. Whiteside Scholarship has been awarded to four excellent members of the Xi Chapter. This scholarship is made possible by our very generous alumni. The scholarship offers $1,000 to members who display excellent character, leadership ability, are in good standing with the chapter, have completed one academic year, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25. The members who receive these scholarships are greatly appreciative.

In the current academic environment, college can be challenging for many students. It can be hard for some to balance everything in a new location.

However, the men who make up our beloved Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma were initiated because they displayed the character that our four pillars uphold.

These men are fully capable of succeeding at everything they put their mind to. They have helped their fellow brothers to help overcome challenge after challenge at our university. With this character and resources our members can go on to achieve things of great significance within their future communities.

Mom’s Club

Welcome to the Kappa Sigma Mom’s Club! It is an honor to serve as President of this unique organization. The Mom’s Club was re-formed in 1987 to act as a support group for the Fabulous Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma at the University of Arkansas. In the time that I have been involved with this organization, I have developed a deep appreciation for the value of this group. Working together to support the young men of Kappa Sigma provides the opportunity to develop new acquaintances and deepen old ones, all while enjoying events with our sons.

The Mom’s Club provides support to the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma through the following events: - Father/Son Weekend in the fall - Holiday decorating - Meals and snacks during dead periods and finals - Mother/Son Weekend dinner, entertainment and auction in the spring - Improvements to the Chapter house and grounds - Financial support for special requests or unplanned needs of the Chapter Over the last few years, we have purchased tables and chairs for the outside patios, office chairs for the library, a new curved sofa and matching sofa for the living room and helped to underwrite the cost to upgrade the internet system in the Chapter House.

During the summer of 2016, we helped to update the second floor study room, which looks much more modern and inviting for the men. The beautiful study space includes new flooring, professionally painted walls featuring historical Xi Chapter photographs. All new furniture and window covers completed the space.

Mom’s Day is held in the spring every year in Fayetteville. Moms’ Day 2017 was a little wet, but we had a great time and were able to raise more to assist the young men at Xi Chapter. RICHARDSON CLUB

The Richardson Club has been established to recognize initiates of Kappa Sigma’s Xi Chapter who have distinguished themselves in the areas of business, the law, politics, academics or other professional pursuits, civic affairs, philanthropy or fraternal work.

The name Richardson Club is taken from Xi Chapter’s founder and the name the chapter used during the period fraternities were banned on the University of Arkansas (then Arkansas Industrial University) campus.

In an effort to recognize men who have joined the chapter celestial, the trustees can recognize both living and deceased members. Recognizing that we are significantly behind in recognizing these individuals, there will be several recipients over the first few years.

Xi Corporation has named trustees from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and our current GM who confirm the nominations.

House Mother’s REPORT

With gratitude, we acknowledge that much of the photography every year in the annual report is because of the time Brenda Rea spends behind the camera.

In preparation for writing in the Annual Report, I spent a few hours reviewing all the pictures I took at Kappa Sig this year, both of functions and those of just ordinary days.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day duties and to lose sight of the overall picture of what this chapter means, not only to the members and alumni, but to their parents and other family members, and to me as well.

The special functions are important to me because I get to know the young men through the eyes of their moms, dads, siblings and extended family. Seeing the love in a mom’s or dad’s eyes or a member’s pride in introducing his parents make me feel hope that this love can make a difference not only to this chapter, but to the communities where the next generation of Kappa Sigma men will eventually settle.

In spite of the challenges and difficulties that inevitably occur when gathering young men of different backgrounds under one roof, the chapter survives and grows stronger.

I am glad to be the “mom” to a chapter that continues to challenge young men to be their best not just academically and in business, but spiritually and ethically, and in their treatment of others as well.

I know they can make a difference in their world.

I have seen it here, in this house.
