Xi Chapter owns a proud history at the University of Arkansas. Over the past year, Kappa Sigma has celebrated its 125th year on campus in Fayetteville. During this time, Xi Chapter also celebrated many other firsts at the U of A. Webster’s Dictionary defines ‘first’ as “being before all others with respect to time, order, rank or importance.” At Xi, we celebrate more than simply being the first Greek letter society, or secret society of any kind, established in Fayetteville. While being first isn’t everything, we are extremely proud of the tradition we enjoy and the men who have come before us. From our first initiate John Clinton Futrall to our most recent U.S. Senator John Boozman, who was initiated at our 125th Celebration in April, Xi Chapter has been responsible for many firsts at the University. The names and faces on these pages, young and old, are a sampling of over 125 years of honor, pride, accomplishment, and friendship.

A Letter from the President The “Fabulous” Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma – it is hard to convey the amount of meaning that small phrase holds to those associated with this chapter. In short, it is an unparalleled experience, an unshakable bond of brotherhood, and above all, it is a commitment to excellence. The men that have come before us did not leave the success of our fraternity to chance. That is why we are the oldest, largest, and most decorated fraternity at the University of Arkansas; and is why Xi Chapter is the most decorated in Kappa Sigma. As an undergraduate, this can be a daunting task; to carry the tradition so many have worked so hard for is not easy. As president here at Xi, I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by the greatest and most hard working men this campus has to offer. The 2014-2015 school year has shown to be another great year for the brothers of Xi; we have continued to raise the bar, setting ourselves apart from our peers, and continuing our tradition of excellence. This past spring, the Xi Chapter had the privilege of celebrating its 125th year anniversary, making us the oldest fraternity at the University of Arkansas. The Xi 125 celebration was a special four-day event in which hundreds of members and alumni from all over the country came to celebrate this significant point in our chapter’s history. This historic moment was the perfect reminder of the tradition of excellence that has been passed down from generation to generation. At Kappa Sigma we require each of our members and pledges to join two campus organizations. This has a powerful impact on the leadership development of our members and has a maintained Kappa Sigma as the front runner in every aspect of campus life. The men here at Xi Chapter are not only very involved in the success of the fraternity but have maintained a strong presence as leaders on campus. These positions include the treasurer of the Associated Student Government, several ASG Senators, executive positions in Interfraternal Council, president of the American Marketing Association, president of the Concerts Committee (credited for organizing one of the largest events at the U of A during the 2014-2015 academic year), and founder of the Aero Hogs Flying Club. Countless other members are involved in premed society, pre-law society, New Greek Council, Leadership Walton, and various other campus organizations. We are determined to mold men into leaders who will graduate with not only a degree, but who are also prepared to compete in all aspects of life. continued on page 2

Our alumni and officers are dedicated to working with each member to pursue academic success with an unrivaled scholarship program, a tutoring fund, and ongoing professional development. An emphasis on scholarship coupled, fittingly, with the importance of success after you have received your degree. Frequently throughout the semester, we have seminars and guest speakers come to advise our chapter on career development, pre-professional planning, resume building, and provide various other insights to guide our membership into a smooth transition into the workforce. Ambition alone does not create opportunity. The network of Kappa Sigma professionals throughout Arkansas and surrounding states is apparent from the moment you pledge and remains an immeasurable asset to our membership throughout their careers. Paired with an incredible University and local community, Kappa Sigma members have abundant opportunities.

Second to Scholarship, philanthropy and service are top priorities to the men of Kappa Sigma. Our chapter has continued to serve our community, keeping our membership dedicated to serving a community that has supported our chapter for 125 years. Through the 2014-2015 academic year, Xi Chapter set the bar even higher by raising several thousand dollars and logging in thousands of community service hours. Our efforts on our first annual Kappa Sigma/Farmhouse Fish Fry won us the award for the most outstanding Philanthropy Event given at the Order of Omega Awards Banquet, an awards ceremony for all of Greek life at the University of Arkansas. Chapter will continue to place important emphasis on this area and set the bar even higher for the 2015-2016 academic year. Our hard work this year has not gone unnoticed; Kappa Sigma has again won the University’s highest award given to a Greek organization, the Award of Excellence. This award recognizes a chapter for excellence in areas of scholarship, leadership, community service, campus involvement, new membership education, and university relations and serves as a distinguishing mark of our commitment to excellence. The Xi Chapter was also awarded The Most Outstanding Philanthropy Event and Most Outstanding Rush at the Order of Omega. Outside of the University, the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma has just been awarded, not the largest fraternity in Kappa Sigma, but the largest fraternity in the world by the Kappa Sigma National Fraternity at this summer’s Grand Conclave. Achievements and recognition alone do not inspire the Xi Chapter’s commitment to excellence, but rather an expectation that we are the best fraternity at the University of Arkansas, we are the best chapter of Kappa Sigma and we are the best fraternity in the world! I am honored to serve the men of the “Fabulous” Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma and could not be more proud to call them my brothers. I know our dedication and hard work will bring together the most outstanding men for our fall pledge class. These men will continue the Xi legacy of being the best, not for an day or an hour, or a college term only, but for life.

Since its founding on May 29, 1890, Xi Chapter has housed many great leaders, scholars, and humanitarians, making it the oldest and most storied fraternity on this campus. Originally, the Xi Chapter was founded at the Virginia Military Institute in 1874, but after a ban of fraternities at VMI, the Xi Chapter was shut down after ten short years. Years later, a young dentist by the name of Dr. Charles Richardson, an Emory and Henry College initiate moved to Fayetteville in 1888 to take over a retiring dentist practice. Two years later, in the spring of 1890, he recruited John Clinton Futrall, Carl Clinton Miller, William Alfred Crawford, William Shields Goodwin, and George Bernard Pugh, the first initiates of the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma. Along with founding the Xi Chapter, Dr. Richardson also founded the Chi Omega Fraternity, which is now the largest women’s sorority in the nation. Looking back at the first five initiates, it is clear that Dr. Richardson did not choose hastily. John C. Futrall went on to serve for over 26 years as the University’s president, was the first football coach for Arkansas, and now has streets and buildings named after him. William S. Goodwin served ten years in the U.S. House of Representatives, William A. Crawford worked for many years in the Little Rock school system, and George B. Pugh transferred to Vanderbilt University and became an attorney. The success of the first five initiates continued through Kappa Sigma history as John E. Martineau (1894) later became the Governor of Arkansas and Samuel B. Hill (1894) later became a Congressman and a member of the United State Board of Tax Appeals. Claris G. “Crip” Hall was a member of the fraternity in 1922 and was very active in campus activities, one of which was creating the annual event of Homecoming for the University. Today, the outstanding senior performer during the Homecoming game receives the Crip Hall award. Hall later served for twenty-five years as Arkansas’ Secretary of State. Kappa Sigma was the first chapter at the University of Arkansas to occupy a chapter house. In March of 1900, Xi Chapter undergraduates rented a home owned by Charles Richardson and lived there for three years. The

chapter house, which no longer stands, was located at 300 W. Center. In the 1904-05 school year, the chapter lived in the “Rex House” at 200 W. Dickson. In 1905-06, they lived at 703 W. Dickson. Over the next 10 years, the chapter lived in three different residences on Mt. Nord - #2 (Bohart House), 111 (Arkansas Building), and a third home with an unknown house number. The Bohart House was the chapter’s home for six years and is the only one of Xi Chapter former residences that still stands. In the 1914-15 school year, the chapter lived at 510 N. College, but the house proved to be too far from campus. The chapter also lived at 753 W. Dickson for three years. This home was know as the Keeney House and is across the street from the Engineering Building. The home of two Fayetteville initiates, Andrew and Scott Hamilton (1910 & 1916, respectfully), housed the chapter during the final year of World War I. During the 1918-19 school year, the chapter lived in the Dickson House at #2 W. Dickson. The Central United Methodist Church is now located on this location. The chapter lived at 221 N. Church Street, but forgot to renew their lease for the following year and again called on the family of one of Xi Chapter’s initiates to house the group in 1920-21. Andrew Hamilton, George Vaughan, and Charles Richardson formed the search committee to find a permanent home for Xi Chapter. On July 25, 1921, Xi Chapter purchased the wooden home that was located at 711 W. Dickson. From that time until today, with the exception of two periods totaling three years while the house was being renovated, Xi Chapter has made its home at 711 W. Dickson. In 1930, the wooden structure was torn down and front portion of the brick house was constructed. Kappa Sigma is the southeast anchor and has been known as the Red Brick Castle on Dickson Street. During the outbreak of World War II the number of men enrolled at the University of Arkansas dropped dramatically, which caused the Xi Chapter to shrink in size. Following the end of the war, a great number of men returned to school under the G.I. Bill, which caused a great influx of men that the University could not house. All the fraternities took extra men, but Xi went above and beyond the call and built the annex onto the rear of the house. It was during this post-war period that Xi Chapter grew to be the largest chapter of any college fraternity – earning its monicker “Fabulous Xi”. Xi celebrated its centennial in 1990 which kicked off our greatest period of growth. Brother E. Fay Jones was the 1990 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal winner for lifetime achievement and the American Institute of Architects chose his Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs as the 4th best design of the 20th century.

Remembering Fay Jones Fay Jones (’39) was a humble man from South Arkansas; he became Arkansas’ most accomplished architect. Growing up, he had liked art, but also like building unusual lean-to like structures and tree houses. It was a movie about the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Johnson Wax Building that changed his life. He saw a newsreel playing at the El Dorado movie house when the building was completed and Jones realized his future.

Jerry Jones, a 1963 initiate, purchased the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 and turned them into Super Bowl Champions in four short years and Philip Anderson, a 1954 initiate, became the President of the American Bar Association in 1998. Along with the success of its previous members during the 90s, the Xi Chapter itself shined bright in many ways. Starting in 1992, the Xi Chapter started a twelveyear run in which it won the Founder’s Award of Chapter Excellence at the Kappa Sigma leadership conference and throughout the decade Xi Chapter continually won the IFC Award of Excellence, the University’s award for the most outstanding chapter on campus. Xi had three men elected Student Body President between 1999 and 2009. In state politics, Brother Dustin McDaniel was elected as Arkansas’ Attorney General in 2007. Along with the success that the Xi Chapter was experiencing, a capital campaign called “Xi Project 2000” was led by Charlie Whiteside, George McLoed, and Malcolm McNair to renovate the Kappa Sigma house. The campaign achieved great success receiving over $2.25 million from alumni, friends, and undergraduates. After a year of construction the house was finally renovated and looked better than ever. Today, Fabulous Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma is the largest Kappa Sigma chapter in the world and is still the largest fraternity on the University of Arkansas campus. Xi is still producing leaders that excel on and off this campus as it has done since its founding. With its rich and deep history, the Fabulous Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma stands unrivaled by any other Fraternity on this campus. With nearly 3,700 initiates, Xi Chapter stands tall and ready to “live forever, never die.”

Jones later studied under Wright, arguably the greatest American architect, and was his only protégé to earn the American Institute of Architect’s Gold Medal for lifetime achievement. Kappa Sigma named Jones the 1990 Kappa Sigma International Man-of-the-Year. Because there wasn’t an Architecture program at the University of Arkansas, Jones initially majored in Engineering. He served as a dive bomber pilot in Southeast Asia when World War II interrupted his studies. When Jones returned from World War II, he was the School of Architecture’s first student. Today, the school bears his name. Jones is best known for chapels and individual homes that dot the landscape in Arkansas and around the country. Thorncrown Chapel was voted the 4th best structure of the 20th century by the American Institute of Architects. Other important structures include the Mildred B. Cooper Chapel in Bella Vista, commissioned by John A. Cooper, Jr. (’58) and Don Edmondson’s (’52) home in Forrest City. These structures have been featured in publications all over the world. “Grounded firmly in his Ozark roots, Fay Jones has created a truly American architecture that is respected the world over,” President George H.W. Bush stated during the White House ceremony where Bush presented Jones with his Gold Medal. In the keynote address at a banquet that evening, Prince Charles of England praised Brother Jones for “the poetry of architecture, a poetry arising out of buildings in harmony with their natural surroundings. They seem to evoke the amplitude of nature without damaging nature.” In 1955, Jones re-designed the sleeping rooms in the second floor of the Kappa Sigma Memorial Annex. While he was serving as faculty advisor to the chapter in the early 1970s, Jones designed an entire chapter house at the request of the undergraduates. Fay Jones died peacefully in his home in 2004 — his legacy lives on today through his life’s work. Some may equal, but none shall excel.

Rush Report The Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma puts a very strong emphasis on our recruitment program. Rush is the first step when it comes to remaining the top house on campus, and a leading chapter nationally. Our rush process is unique, and we believe it is the best system to recruit new members that will not only become leaders in Kappa Sigma, but also leaders on campus and throughout life. Each year, more and more young men are choosing to attend the University of Arkansas and go through fraternity recruitment. We try to separate them by region, and assign one or more rush chairs to each region in order to get to know our potential members better. Our rush team includes: two head rush chairs, seven Arkansas regional rush chairs, a Texas rush chair, an out-of-state rush chair, and our newly added legacy and alumni recommendation rush chair. Having such a strong rush team and system, we put ourselves above other fraternities by covering more ground and making sure no young man is overlooked. Fall recruitment for 2015 is well underway. As we start meeting these potential members, we like to take some time to show them the campus and our house, as well as tell them about what it means to be a Xi. We take pride in our alumni, our focus on academics and involvement around campus, and our dominance as a fraternity at the University of Arkansas for 125 years. At the recent Omega awards ceremony, our chapter received the Outstanding Recruitment award for 2014-2015, the only chapter on campus to do so. We would like to thank our alumni for their outstanding support. Without them, recruitment would not operate as efficiently and powerfully as it currently does. Legacies: a Xi Chapter tradition Initiation has always been a special time in Fayetteville, Arkansas. From the time of our founders more than 125 years ago through our most recent during our 125th Anniversary Celebration, becoming part of Xi Chapter is special. The culmination of a semester’s work with men who, for the most part, began as strangers and have developed into the closest of friends is initiation. It defines what pledging and membership is for our chapter. Xi Chapter has a strong, vibrant history at the University of Arkansas and is one of Kappa Sigma’s most accomplished chapters. Legacies have always played an important role at 711 W. Dickson and this year is no exception. Of the 63 men initiated on November 16, 2014, 21 were legacies (brothers, fathers, grandfathers, uncles, etc.) Some of these had family lineage that dated back to the 1930s, some had brothers living in the house, and others had family members initiated at other chapters. Corbett Bassett from Fayetteville is the grandson of Bill Bassett, a 1944 initiate and former Grand Scribe. While his grandfather has already joined the chapter celestial, he is happy to be part of what his grandfather enjoyed so much. Paul Dunn (’80) said his son Brock’s initiation was “one of the proudest moments I have ever had as a father. It brought back memories from my experience and the many friendships I still enjoy today. I had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. It was Awesome,” said Dunn. Family tradition is part of Xi’s legacy. Kappa Sigma’s 1993 Man-of-the-Year, Jerry Jones, was in attendance for his grandson’s initiation. Jerry and Gene Chambers Jones’ grandson, Shy Anderson, has three different members of his family who are Xi Chapter initiates. Shy’s great grandfather, John Ed Chambers Jr., was initiated in 1937 and served as Grand Master during the 1939-40 academic year. Additionally, Shy’s great uncle, John Ed Chambers, III, was initiated in 1965. Jerry was initiated in the Fall of 1963. Jerry presented Shy with the badge of a longtime family friend who once served as Grand Master of Xi Chapter. As Jerry pinned the badge on Shy’s jacket, he told him the story of its original owner, Fred Burns (’62), and that he grew up next door to Shy’s grandmother and her family. Jerry went on about Burns’ longtime relationship with the Chamber and Jones families and how much it meant to everyone that he was able to wear it. Jerry told Shy, “We are all so proud of you. You know they all wanted to be here, but this is for brothers and I’m happy to be part of it.” Jerry signed and presented Dallas Cowboys caps for all of the new initiates and their big brothers as a way to further remember this occasion. By the end of the long day, Xi had initiated 63 new members and created memories to last a life time. The ritual teams worked hard preparing and initiating the large group of men and made the day worthwhile for all the alumni and undergraduates who attended. In 1998, then pledge class president Jimbo Ramsay (’99), told a group of Xi Chapter alumni that “it is an on honor to walk these halls and know I am walking the same places my grandfather had walked.” Jimbo’s grandfather, Louis Ramsay was initiated in 1938. “To see his picture on the wall every day is very special to me and I’m proud to be here.” Xi Chapter has initiated nearly 3,700 men since its founding on May 29, 1890 and is poised to add the finest men to this number during this year’s Rush.

Pledge Class Report Out of all the things that I have done in my college career, being the Head Pledge Trainer for Kappa Sigma has been by far the most rewarding. It has been an amazing experience to be able to watch sixty-four young men come into college and transform themselves into honorable men of the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma. Over the course of the sixty-day pledgeship, I saw these men who did not know each other at first, come together and push through their trials to become brothers. Being able to experience their transformation from being a boy into a man of Xi is something that I will never forget. As a pledge trainer of Xi, it was my job to show these young men how to become an honorable man of Kappa Sigma and there was no better tool to use than the Star and Crescent. The Star and Crescent is more than just a sixty-five word phrase; it shows us the true meaning of being a Kappa Sigma. As time went on during pledgeship, I was able to witness firsthand the transformation the pledges went through as they put the Star and Crescent into their lives and started living by it. Along with the Star and Crescent, the assistant pledge trainers and I stressed the importance of the Four Pillars. Fellowship, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service are the foundation of what this fraternity represents and it is what every member still strives to excel in. Another area of importance is Xi Chapter History. I felt it was very important for the pledges to understand how hard all the men who came before us worked to build and maintain our amazing house and reputation. One of the fundamental aspects of pledging is brotherhood. At first, the pledges were all complete strangers to each other, but after sixty days of always being together whether it was community service, philanthropy events, study hall, or just hanging out, these men became brothers. Now, they are members of the Xi Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. I hope that what they have learned from their pledging experience will stick with them for the rest of their lives. They began as complete strangers and finished as true bothers. These men are now carrying on the excellent tradition of “Fabulous Xi� and I am so proud to say that I was able to be part of this experience.

2014-2015 Kappa Sigma Social Report The Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma is exceptional in many areas: the academics of brothers, networking provided for the future, lifelong brotherhood and friendship, and a social scene that is second to none. Kappa Sigma has had the premiere social calendar on campus for many years. The 2014-2015 school year kept that tradition going and even raised the bar. This year we set our standards high with the goal of being the most socially involved fraternity on campus, and most will agree that we met and exceeded that goal. We kicked off our social calendar with our age-old camping function, Southern Skies, which began in 1991. This social event is an overall favorite with all Xi Chapter members. Southern Skies consists of all the members and their dates going to Hog Ridge Hollow, where we camp out accompanied by a massive bonfire while enjoying a live performance from country artist Ben Bradford. For Homecoming 2014, the theme was “Calling Home All Hogs”, which paid tribute to the rich history of the Arkansas Razorbacks. We were lucky enough to be paired up with the ladies of Alpha Omicron Pi, and built a float paying homage to the tradition of Arkansas Razorback football. At the end of the semester, the Xi Chapter held its annual Semi Formal, the Ole’ Mallard Ball. This event was held at Pratt Place Barn. Members and their dates went out for a nice dinner and then came back to the barn for entertainment by a band. For Xi Chapter, the Spring semester is the busiest time of year for our social calendar. The first social event of the Spring is one of our biggest and largely celebrated functions, Fratty Shack, a spin off of the 80s hit movie Caddy Shack. Members get together and deck out the entire chapter house with AstroTurf and create the atmosphere of a golf course. Later in the evening, members and their guests return to hear the DJ. On April 12, 2014, our annual Row Week celebration of Greek life, Bacchanalia, kicked off with a huge bang. The first night of Bacchanalia is date night. Each Xi Chapter member takes their date to dinner at the restaurant reserved for their respective pledge class. After dinner, members came back to the house to hear the highly anticipated concert that opened with the return of The Brandon Lay Band and finished with one of our favorite funk bands Full House. The second day of Bacchanalia is something Kappa Sigma is known for around campus thoughout the history of Row Week. Xi Chapter prides itself in outdoing the previous year’s Bacchanalia – this year was no exception. This year Kappa Sigma rose to the occasion and hired ASAP Ferg to perform. He exceeded all expectations and created a lasting memory for our members. We believe Bacchanalia sets the standard for Row Week year after year. As the semester winds down, we have our annual Spring Formal that traditionally takes place outside of Arkansas. This year we decided to hold it in Kansas City, Missouri at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Members went to Kansas City for the weekend and attended the formal dance in the banquet room of the hotel on Saturday night where they were served an exquisite Italianthemed meal and entertained by a DJ. This memorable weekend was an eventful end to the 2014-2015 social calendar. The leadership of our executive committee along with our dedicated members helped to make this year unforgettable. Xi Chapter is already planning next year’s social calendar. We fully expect the 2015-2016 school year and Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma’s social calendar to be even more eventful to continue our Xi Chapter tradition of 125 years here at the University of Arkansas.

Intramural Report The Fabulous Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma had another exceptional year in intramural sports. Kappa Sig’s flag football team led by Austin Nolan went on to defeat every team in its path on the way to a second consecutive championship and an undefeated season. The basketball team also had quite a run just falling short in the semifinals — Brothers Jake Mosiman and Cole Moreano had quite the season. The Softball team also went on to win the championship yet again this year. The Xi Chapter also competed in many other sports including Dodgeball, Soccer, Volleyball, and Bowling.

Brother Nick Berman, Fabulous Xi’s intramural chair, went to all of the games with many other Brothers to cheer on, document, and take pictures of the teams. Brother Berman was also a participant in Flag Football, Basketball, and Softball. Kappa Sig had Eight Top Five teams as well as two winners in flag football and Softball. The athletes of the Xi Chapter did not disappoint in the 2014-2015 school year and made the entire chapter proud.

Leadership Conference Report Every other summer Kappa Sigma holds two leadership conferences for a selected number of members from each chapter of Kappa Sigma. In 2014, the leadership conference was held in New Orleans and the Xi Chapter sent Mac Simpson, Sam Farris, Aaron Dale, Austin Nolan, David Murph, Clay Shook, Brandon Breard, Zach Owston, Neil Watson, and Xi’s Alumnus Advisor, Malcolm McNair. During the weeklong conference, these members attended many different seminars dedicated to helping our chapter excel in many different areas. These seminars included leadership skills, recruiting the best men, habits of a good chapter, creating the correct bylaws, and many others that all the men in attendance enjoyed. These men then reported all that they learned to the rest of the chapter when they returned. This trip was not only educational, but was a great brotherhood development event as well. The men that attended had a great time spending the weekend with thousands of their brothers from across the country. This was an experience that they will be able to share with their brothers forever.

Philanthropy Report The Fabulous Xi Chapter has always taken great pride in giving back to our community and helping others outside of our chapter. Our members devote their time and effort to being involved on campus, as well as the entire Northwest Arkansas community. Being the largest chapter on campus and the largest Kappa Sigma chapter nation-wide, we have the ability to have a huge impact on the community around us. To kick off the school year, Kappa Sigma participated in Make a Difference Day by helping with the children’s fall carnival at Butterfield Trail Elementary. Service project leader and member Justin Cooper and 50-plus other members volunteered working carnival games, serving food, and managing the silent auction. It was a great day for Kappa Sigma to give back to the community and spend time with the young kids of Butterfield Trail Elementary. The Xi Chapter kept busy this past fall with many community service and philanthropy projects. Our chapter held a food drive for the Fayetteville Food Pantry, which piled our kitchen with canned food items. The donations we collected went to the Fayetteville School District to help provide for less fortunate students. Xi Chapter also sent a group of members to help clean up Pratt Place Barn, which is one of Northwest Arkansas’ most beautiful event venues. While the weather was still warm, the Xi Chapter accepted the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge after being called out by the Kappa Sigma chapter at the University of Central Arkansas. Over 100 members gathered outside of the front steps at 711 W Dickson and participated in the challenge, raising money for the ALS Association. After being called out, the Fabulous Xi Chapter challenged the rest of Greek Life at the University of Arkansas, which raised even more money and awareness for the ALS Association. To start off 2015, the Xi Chapter made a donation to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s Century of Possibility campaign. This campaign was created to raise money for the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in order to fund advanced equipment and research to provide the best medical attention and technology to help cure the various childhood diseases. In April, Kappa Sigma teamed up with Farmhouse Fraternity and held our first annual fish fry. The proceeds from the ticket sales for the diner went to the Military Heroes Campaign, which is Kappa Sigma’s national philanthropy organization. This organization reaches out and helps veterans and their families after they return from active duty. At the recent Order of Omega Awards, our fish fry won best philanthropy event on campus, which was voted on by the administrators of Greek Life as a whole. We had a great turn out and plan on making this an annual event. Our members continue on our chapter’s tradition of selfless hard work and devotion to give back to our community. We look forward to the future to continue on with our current efforts and look forward to finding other ways in which we can give back.

MAC SIMPSON Mac Simpson is a Sophomore Political Science major and a native of McKinney, Texas. Mac maintains above a 3.4 GPA and is very involved in the house and around Greek life. Currently serving as Xi’s Grand Treasurer, he is also involved in College Republicans, College Conservatives, Interfraternity Council, and Greek Men’s Leadership Institute. In the past Mac has served as the Texas Rush Chairman and is currently the head of Xi’s financial committee.

COLIN CARR Colin Carr, a Sophomore from Paragould, is a Pre-Medical Psychology major in the Fulbright Honors College of Arts and Sciences. On campus, Colin is involved in College Republicans, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Student Mobilization. Colin excels in the classroom, maintaining a 4.0 GPA the past two years. Colin has also received the Grover C. Morris Award from the Xi Alumni Association for maintaining the highest grade point average in his pledge class.

AUSTIN NOLAN Austin is a Junior from Fort Smith, Arkansas, majoring in Pre-Medical Biology in the Fulbright Honors College of Arts and Sciences. Over the past three years, Austin has been very involved on campus and in Kappa Sigma. While maintaining a 3.8 GPA, his involvement includes the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Alpha Lamda Delta Honor Society, Student Mobilization, and the Biology Club. In the past, Austin has served as the Grand Procurator, Grand Scribe, and Scholarship Chair of the Xi Chapter and is currently the Vice President of Recruitment for the Interfraternity Council.

BRANDON BREARD Brandon Breard, from Monroe, Louisiana, is a Junior Biology major and a Finance minor. Brandon currently holds a 3.93 GPA, earning him a spot on the Chancellor’s List for four consecutive semesters. Recently, Brandon founded the Flying Hogs Aero-Club, which is a registered organization for students to fly and control their own aircraft in an affordable way. Brandon also recently received a $25,000 grant from the Walton College for the organization. He is also involved in Ducks Unlimited, Pre-Dental Society, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Biology Club, Alpha Epsilon Delta Honor Society, and Alpha Lamda Delta Honor Society. In the house, Brandon has served as the Grand Scribe and Scholarship Chair and is currently a member of Xi’s social committee.

SCOTT SIMS Scott Sims, a Finance and Accounting major in the Walton Honors College, is a Freshman from McGehee. Scott is extremely involved in campus and in the fraternity. On campus, Scott is a member of the Lead Hogs Program, Fresh Hogs Program, Resident’s Interhall Congress, Maple South Senate, Student Alumni Board, and is an Undergraduate Representative of the Walton Finance Association. He also is a peer mentor for the Walton Honors College and is a tutor at Campus Concierge, the Xi Chapter’s outside tutoring service. Scott currently serves as the Scholarship Chair for Kappa Sigma and was the Pledge Class President last Fall. Scott is also a very involved member of the University’s Associated Student Government. He is a newly elected Senator for ASG and has served as a delegate to the freshman leadership forum in the past. He also plans on running for President of ASG during the Fall of his Junior year.

BROCK HYLAND Brock is a Sophomore from Waco, Texas majoring in Political Science. Brock is extremely involved on campus as well as in the house. Brock currently serves as a Senator for Associated Student Government. He also serves as chair for College Republicans, a delegate for Greek Life Facilitators, a member of SOOIE, and Pre-Law Society. In the house, Brock is the campus involvement chair, a member of judicial board, and a member of the risk-management committee.

JUSTIN CARROLL Justin Carroll is a Junior from Brinkley, majoring in Agriculture Systems Technology Management with a minor in Agriculture Business in the Dale Bumpers Honors College. Justin has been involved in many areas on campus as well as Kappa Sigma while maintaining a 3.85 GPA. He serves as the Director of Financial Affairs and Business Relations for the Collegiate Farm Bureau and is also a member of Delta Waterfowl and Ducks Unlimited. Within the Xi Chapter, Justin has served as the Social Chairman and an assistant pledge educator and currently serves as the head of the row week committee.

BLAKE JONES Blake is a Senior from Tulsa, Oklahoma majoring in Finance with a minor in Accounting. Blake is very involved around campus and also in the house while maintaining a 3.6 GPA. On campus, he currently serves as the Vice President for recruitment for the Finance Club. In the past, he has served as the Grand Procurator, Grand Scribe, T-Shirt Chair, and the Social Chair for his pledge class.

MIKE WYSE Mike Wyse, a native of Dallas Texas, is a Senior majoring in Finance in the Walton Honor College of Business. Mike is extremely involved and is a leader around campus. He has served as the Treasurer of Associated Student Government, an SI Leader for Microeconomics, a Freshmen Business Connections Mentor, a Rho Chi for IFC, Fundraising Chair for the Rugby Club, and a member of Leadership Walton. Mike has been just involved around the house as he is on campus serving as House Manager, Pledge Class President, and served on XI’s Executive Committee as the Grand Master of Ceremonies.

DANIEL BLACKSHARE Daniel Blackshare is a Senior from Rector, majoring in Biology with a minor in Business. Daniel maintains a 3.93 GPA and has consecutively made the Dean’s List and Chancellor’s List eight times. Daniel participates in many clubs on campus such as Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. At the Xi Chapter, Daniel has served on the judicial board and the scholarship committee.

NEIL WATSON Neil Watson is a Junior from Fayetteville, and currently serves as the President of Xi Chapter. Neil’s leadership has been extraordinary during Xi’s 125th celebratory year. His countless hours of work and high character are something that every single member of Xi Chapter looks up to. Before being elected President of the Xi Chapter, Neil served as Philanthropy Chair, a member of the social committee, risk management, and Grand Master of Ceremonies. Neil is also very involved on campus and in Greek Life as a whole, serving on Interfraternity Council and Greek Men’s Leadership Institute.

ERIC JETER Eric Jeter, a native of Austin, Texas, is a Sophomore International Relations major in the Walton Honors College. Eric currently holds a 3.4 GPA while being a cadet in Army ROTC. He has participated in the Buddy Ranger Challenge Team as well as a special training exercise at Fort Chaffee for sharp-shooter training. He has also served as Pledge Class Treasurer and Assistant Pledge Trainer.

SEAN KINCADE Sean Kincade is a Junior Geology major and a business minor from Dallas, Texas. Sean has been very involved on campus since his Freshmen year. While holding a 3.5 GPA, he has been involved in New Greek Council, Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol (GAMMA), Kappa Sigma Delegate for IFC, the RSO Financial Committee, the Geology Club, and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. For the past two semesters he has served as the Head Pledge Trainer and in the past has served on the risk management team, scholarship committee, and Assistant Pledge Trainer.

MARK HALL Mark is a Junior from Springdale majoring in Biology with minors in Italian and Psychology in the Fulbright Honors College of Arts and Sciences. Mark has maintained a 3.95 GPA earning him spots on both the Chancellor’s and Dean’s List. He is a member of the AED Medical Society, a chemistry tutor at the Enhanced Learning Center, Italian Club, and is an SI Leader for Chemistry I and II. Last summer, Mark participated in the Study Abroad Program in Italy and serves on the scholarship committee and Judicial Board at the Xi Chapter.

ADAM JONES Adam Jones is Freshmen from Fayetteville, majoring in business in the Walton Honors College. Within the Xi Chapter, Adam has served as Pledge Class President, Scholarship Committee, Risk Management, Row Week Committee, and the Social Committee. He has been very busy during his freshmen year participating in the Finance Club, FRESH Hogs, New Greek Council, and Student Mobilization.

JON PRUETER Jon Prueter is a Sophomore Civil Engineering major from Overland Park, Kansas. Jon has maintained a 3.75 GPA the past two years and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Student Mobilization, American Society of Civil Engineers, and Chi Epsilon Honor Society. Jon currently serves as the Grand Scribe of Kappa Sigma. In the past, he has served as the Scholarship Chair and is currently a member of the scholarship committee and is a Judicial Board member.

RUSTY JACKSON Rusty Jackson is a Finance major from Wynne, Arkansas in the Walton Honors College. Rusty is currently the Vice President for of Xi Chapter and also serves as the House Manager, head of the Judicial Board, scholarship committee, head of the risk management team, head of the row week committee, and has also served as an Assistant Pledge Trainer. There are very few members that have put as much effort and hours into making Xi Chapter successful. Rusty is also involved in Delta Waterfowl, Ducks Unlimited, Finance Club, and IFC.

TIM ROBINSON Tim is a Junior Business major from Dallas, Texas. He has been a leader in the house since he arrived on campus, serving on the scholarship committee, social committee, Judicial Board, and the Pledge Class Social Chair. This past April, Tim served as the head of the Xi125 committee and worked with alumni and undergraduate members to plan Xi Chapter’s 125th Anniversary. Tim’s hard work planning and preparing for this event was shown through how awesome the weekend was for everyone who attended. He is also involved in the Business Club and a member of Leadership Walton.

CONNOR VERNON Connor Vernon, a native of Plano, Texas, is a Junior Accounting major in the Integrated Masters of Accountancy Program. He holds a 3.7 GPA while being an SI leader for Principles of Accounting I and a member of the Beta Alpha Psi Accounting fraternity. Connor has also been very involved in the house serving on the row committee, social committee, scholarship committee, and a member of the Judicial Board.

DAVID MURPH David is a Junior Accounting major in the Integrated Masters of Accountancy Program from El Dorado. David is currently an Accountant for the Fayettechill Clothing Company in Fayetteville and also an accounting clerk for Lashley Higgins CPA. He is also a member of the International Business Club on Campus and a Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol (GAMMA) Delegate for Kappa Sigma.

Xi125 turned into a WOW weekend in Fayetteville as Xi Chapter celebrated 125 years on the University of Arkansas campus. “I’ve never laughed and hugged so much. It was the greatest weekend of my life,” said Derek Jones (1988). Jones was Grand Master when Xi celebrated its Centennial in April of 1990. The Xi125 weekend was highlighted by keynote speeches from 1993 Man-of-the-Year Jerry Jones (1963), 1998 Man-of-the-Year Philp Anderson (1954), former Congressman Ed Bethune (1958), and former Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel (1991); the initiation of US Senator John Boozman; and special tributes to both D. Malcolm McNair, Jr. (1969) and Charles B. Whiteside, III (1960). Spanning eight decades, 850 members and guests joined together to commemorate the founding of Xi in Arkansas. The co-chairs for the weekend were Martin Swope (1991) and Phil Schoettlin (1986). The legacy of 3,695 initiates and 125 years was celebrated by the alumni, undergraduates, and guests of Xi Chapter in Fayetteville, Arkansas the last weekend of April 2015. Xi Chapter, which is the third oldest, continuously active chapter in Kappa Sigma had brothers from as far away as Prague, Czech Republic attend the Xi125 Celebration – Rodney Farmer (1984) is a past Xi Chapter GM. Dr. Charles Richardson (Omicron 1883) helped John C. Futrall (1890), William A. Crawford (1890), Carl C. Miller (1890), William S. Goodwin (1890), and George B. Pugh (1890) organized and founded Xi Chapter May 29, 1890. Since that time, Xi Chapter has initiated more men than any chapter of Kappa Sigma and is the largest undergraduate chapter of any fraternity in the country. THURSDAY : SPECIAL INITIATIONS/WELCOME RECEPTION As part of the weekend’s festivities, five alumni and one undergraduate were initiated into Xi Chapter. Alumni Billy Lieblong, Tim Mason, Loyd Swope, and Arch Trulock were initiated on Thursday, April 23rd to kick off the three day event. Following Thursday’s initiation, alumni gathered for a kick-off reception. For Alumnus Advisor D. Malcolm McNair, Jr. (1969) it was like a homecoming. McNair has been AA for nearly 29 years and has been present at the pledging and initiation of over 1600 men in that time period - more than any man in the history of the order. As they streamed back into reception, McNair’s time flooded back in. “I can’t tell you how much fun this is,” McNair said. “All these people coming back is just wonderful.” FRIDAY : GOLF TOURNAMENT/ALUMNI RECEPTION Fayetteville Country Club hosted the Xi125 Reunion Golf Tournament Friday morning. Tournament co-chairs Conner McNair (2003) and Ryan Hardin (1997) mixed undergraduates with alumni in the 130 man field. Friday evening over 450 attended the Alumni reception where former Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel spoke and 49 alumni were recognized for 50, 60 and 70 year memberships. Phil Wilson (1946) and John Brenner (1946) were pledge brothers and the oldest initiates at the event. Wilson had pledged following his service in WWII. Both Thursday and Friday evening receptions were held at the UARK Bowl, located across the street from Xi Chapter and was built by Xi Chapter alumni Emil Sonneman (1926).

SATURDAY : BOOZMAN INITIATION / BUSINESS MEETING Saturday morning began early with the initiations of U.S. Senator John N. Boozman and Brian Poe. Boozman was one of the Xi125 special initiates and Poe was the model pledge from the Spring pledge class. Following the Saturday initiations, Xi Chapter Alumni Association held a business meeting where Xi Chapter GM and AA Malcolm McNair gave a state of the chapter address, Xi Corporation President gave a report from the alumni association, and WGP Derek Marchman gave a state of the fraternity address. In all of these addresses, the long-term success of Xi Chapter and its recent strides to raise the bar even higher were the focus. During Marchman’s address, he complimented Xi Chapter on being the largest chapter of any fraternity in the country. With 290 undergraduate members. Marchman also congratulated the alumni on the long-term success of Xi Chapter. During the morning business meeting, the featured speakers were 1998 Kappa Sigma Man-of-the-Year Philip Anderson (1954) and former US Congressman Ed Bethune (1968). Anderson was one of the most celebrated undergraduate members of Xi Chapter in the 1950s and has had a distinguished legal career, which included a term as President of the American Bar Association.

Brother Anderson specifically about Bill Eldredge and Phil Carroll, among others of his generation. Bill Eldredge (1943), one of the named partners in Arkansas’ largest law firm Friday, Eldredge, and Clark, had served as Grand Master of Xi as an Undergraduate and was an active alumnus of Xi Chapter. Phil Carroll (1946) attended college after his service in World War II. Carroll was captured by the Germans and spent time in one of the Nazi concentration camps. After law school Carroll was a long-time partner in the Rose Law Firm, the oldest law firm West of the Mississippi. Congressman Bethune, who was originally a pledge brother of Phil Anderson, spoke about how Kappa Sigma is always open to those who have it in their heart. “The road of life—indeed the road to Bologna—is perilous. “In the midst of such turmoil we humans need a constant— something to hold onto. Something we can trust. Something that tells us we can make it through the worst of troubles. We need faith, family, and fellowship. “Kappa Sigma is such a constant, and it” . . . “accounts for the enormous turnout we have at this, the 125th anniversary of Xi Chapter.”

During Anderson’s address, he spoke about the chapter in the 1950s, the many great attorneys and judges produced by Xi Chapter at that time, and the broader success of men from that era. Anderson described how the demographic difference in the late 1940s and early 1950s – how returning WWII veterans mixed with students who were attending in the normal course of life.

XI125 GALA – a grand event with featuring brothers Jones, McNair, and Whiteside Like the Conclave Banquet is considered Kappa Sigma’s finest hour, the Xi125 Gala was Xi Chapter’s finest hour. The Fayetteville Town Center, a relatively new facility, was packed the evening of April 25. In the Spring of 1890, Charles Richardson’s dental office, the location for Xi Chapter’s first meetings, was located just across the Fayetteville square. As part of the evening’s events, Xi Chapter announced its annual award winners: Senior Bryce Larry (2011) won the C. Cole Jeffries, Jr. Undergraduate Man-of-the-Year Award, Spencer Jones (2009) won the Michael E. Newcity Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, and Congressman Ed Bethune (1958) received the Charles L. Massey, Jr. Alumni Man-of-the-Year Award. In his final report as President of Xi Foundation, Charlie Whiteside (1960) introduced the new members of Xi Foundation. Charlie also announced the establishment of D. Malcolm McNair Endowed Senior Leadership Program through Xi Educational Foundation. This program is to help better prepare Xi Chapter seniors for life after college and their professional careers. Shy Anderson, Jr. (2014) was called on to introduce the keynote speaker for the evening Jerry Jones (1963). Shy is very proud of his grandfather and his many accomplishments. Anderson called Jerry his hero and the greatest man he knows. One of the reasons he pledged Xi Chapter was to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps. Jerry Jones took time out of NFL draft preparations to be with the chapter for its 125th anniversary. Before Shy left the stage, Jones talked about the special bond he had with Shy and how Shy has followed the team and its personnel. Brother Jones’ wife, Gene Chambers Jones, attended along with other family. Gene is the daughter and sister of Xi Chapter initiates – her father John Ed Chambers Jr (1937) and brother John Ed Chambers III (1965). During his talk, Jones talked about dreams – his dreams. He told stories about how he would take time out when he was on campus to walk around the lawn and to walk by the Kappa Sig house as he dreamed about the future. He talked about how his mother worried about his desire – or his dream – to get into professional sports. And he talked about how important it was to him to be involved in his kids’ activities. Jones confessed that the greatest plays he ever diagrammed were plays sketched on a napkin for his son’s little league football games.

Jerry complimented the chapter and alumni like Charlie Whiteside and Frank Fletcher (1960) for all the work they had done to keep Xi Chapter on top. A special video tribute to Charlie Whiteside who retired in June of 2014 after serving as President of Xi Housing Corporation and Xi Alumni Association for 40 years, brought the ninth and final standing ovation of the evening. The video, a retrospective of Whiteside’s 40 years, included commentary from long time Xi Corporation board members, Charlie’s wife Cappy, and Xi Chapter Alumnus Advisor Malcolm McNair. Whiteside, speechless, simply stated his “cup runneth over.” Martin Swope, Xi Corporation President and Xi125 co-chair, closed the evening auctioning a framed print signed by Brothers Jerry Jones, John Boozman, Charlie Whiteside, John Brenner, and Phil Wilson. With an initial goal of $5,000, the print brought $50,000 from one of the multi-generational Xi Chapter families. In the hours and days that followed the event, brothers from all over the country sent congratulatory messages, calls, tweets, and Facebook posts to the chapter and alumni organizers. “This was truly an event that gave me and my family memories that will last a lifetime,” wrote Matt Breece (1988). Ed Bethune OUSTANDING ALUMNUS 2015 1958, Little Rock, Arkansas

Outstanding Alumni

Adventure and Politics have embodied Ed Bethune’s life since his days at the University of Arkansas. Hon. Edwin R. Bethune, Jr (1958) is one of five Xi Chapter initiates to serve in the United States Congress. Prior to service in Congress, Bethune served in the U.S. Marines, as an FBI Agent, and as a prosecuting attorney.

Since leaving Congress, Bethune re-entered private practice, was President of First Federal of Arkansas, became a lobbyist and later an author. In his spare time, he took up sailing. Brother Bethune, during his time in Washington, became great friends with U.S. Senator, and former Congressman, John Boozman of Rogers, Arkansas. When Boozman was recommended for Special Initiation during Xi Chapter’s 125th Celebration, Ed was one of the nominators. Bethune represented the 2nd Congressional District from 1979-1985. Prior to his service in Congress, Ed served as a special agent of the FBI and as the prosecuting attorney in the first judicial district. Bethune was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1954–1957, with service in South Korea. He was chairman of the Ninth District Federal Home Loan Bank Board from 1973-1976. When Bethune won his seat in Congress in 1978, he was the first Republican to hold the seat in 104 years. In 1984, Bethune lost a bid to unseat David Pryor in the U.S. Senate. Following the election, he returned to private practice and also was a Washington, D.C. lobbyist. He joined the law firm of Bracewell & Guillani in Washington, D.C. and became a high profile ethics’ lawyer, representing Speaker Newt Gingrich, Majority Leader Tom DeLay and others. In 1990, Ed and his wife Lana were rescued by U.S. Coast Guard helicopters two hundred miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The couple was trapped in rough seas for some thirty-six hours in their 30-foot yacht Salute before being located.

Bethune is the author of a memoir, Jackhammered: A Life of Adventure and of a novel, Gay Panic in the Ozarks. Ed has been an active Xi Chapter alumnus. He and his wife Lana live in Little Rock. During his address at Xi125’s business meeting, Bethune recounted some of his life experiences and “the turmoil we humans” endure. He recounted his memories from world events. Bethune witnessed the strife of people who have not learned to live together. During his time in the Marines, he was in post-World War II Tokyo. He witnessed the 1957 demonstrations at Little Rock High School – military vehicles and troops all over the place. As an FBI agent, he witnessed race riots in Newark, N.J. that were far worse than those in Ferguson, Mo. “The road to life – indeed the road to Bologna – is perilous,” Bethune stated. “In the midst of such turmoil we humans need a constant – something to hold onto. Something we can trust. Something that tells us we can make it through the worst of troubles. We need faith, family, and fellowship.” “Kappa Sigma is such a constant . . . that accounts for the enormous turnout we have at this, the 125th anniversary of Xi Chapter. “When we are with our ‘old’ brothers we enjoy fellowship as if no time had passed since we were pledges. We talk of big brothers, little brothers, and days in the house, particular events, as if they were yesterday. “And when we meet a ‘new’ brother we know we have a starting point, a trust, a love, a friendship.” Exemplifying the finest qualities of a Xi Chapter initiate and Alumnus, Xi Chapter and Xi Alumni Association are happy to name Brother Ed Bethune as the 2015 Charles L. Massey Alumni Man-of-the-Year.

Over the next 9 months, we will submit both devices for FDA 510(k) Clearance, raise a large seed or small series A round, and conduct clinical research and pilot trials.” The company is actively raising funds and has two VC funds and two angel investors in the ‘soft circle’ looking to invest. This experience is quite different from what Jones thought he would be doing after graduation, but his time at Xi Chapter laid a good foundation for leadership.

Spencer Jones (’09) is a nurse turned entrepreneur. In the 18 months since his December 2013 graduation from the University of Arkansas Mann School of Nursing, Jones developed his initial invention, the BVAD, won the ARK Challenge, and has launched a new company – not too bad for a 23 year old.

As an undergrad, Jones served as Head Rush Chair and was involved in other campus and chapter activities. “The experiences I had while at 711 W. Dickson are some of the fondest memories I have,” Jones remembered. “You will find people to have fun with at any fraternity; at Xi, you have friends and alumni eager to build each other and grow into community leaders. The organizational and budgeting skills I gained as the Head Rush Chair prepared me for the unique rigors of being an entrepreneur.”

During his rotations in nursing school, he saw the need for a new product to reduce the of number needle sticks a patient receives. His product is a single catheter with two channels, inserted in the forearm, hand, or elbow like a normal IV. The two channels are different size; the larger one is for fluid administration, and the smaller is purely for blood draws. The ARK Challenge is a mentorship-driven accelerator program for technology startups. The ARK Challenge is a Winrock International/U.S. Programs initiative. It is made possible due to funding from Winrock International, Gravity Ventures, Fund for Arkansas’ Future and the Arkansas Development Finance Authority. Winning this competition earned Spencer and his company a $150,000 investment in his fledgling enterprise. “Winning the ARK Challenge catapulted me into the entrepreneurial ecosystem in a way I couldn’t have imagined. It helped plug me into the necessary support communities and gave me access to necessary capital and programming,” Jones said.

The Kappa Sigma Experience BRYCE LARRY To summarize my experience as a member of the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma at the University

When I stepped foot on to the University of Arkansas campus, I had no idea that my life was going to change so much in a short four years. These four years would turn out to be the most challenging, enjoyable, maturing and unforgettable years of my life. The Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma was the reason I was going to experience all of these things in my college career. As men of Xi Chapter, we are challenged to be leaders in and out of the classroom. We are expected to be men of honor and courage who display the traits of a humble man at all times. Being a Kappa Sigma helped me see what it truly meant to put others before yourself and the value of true friendship. I was challenged to lead student organizations throughout campus as well as be the man who every woman respected. I was also challenged to grow in my faith and accountability with my brothers. The Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma gave me some of the most enjoyable times of my life. Living with 60 of your best friends makes college even more fun. I walked onto campus thinking that I would meet a few new friends, however, the fraternity gave me the best friends I have ever had. From the row week parties to the late nights sitting on the balcony talking about life, I was able to gain special moments that most people will never be able to experience. Any man who pledges Kappa Sigma will mature into the true man that we are all meant to be. As brothers, we were able to experience the highs and the lows of life, knowing that we would all be there in a heart beat for each other. Being a Kappa Sigma allows you to be around men who are there to sharpen you and make you better in ways that you have never even dreamed of. A brotherhood that constantly pushes one another to a higher level of maturity is a hard thing to find. However, the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma offers this experience. Summing up the experience of being a Kappa Sigma is almost an impossible task. Putting into words what it means to be a man of God and be a part of the most noble brotherhood in the world cannot be done. One thing that can be said of the Xi Chapter experience is that it is the most unforgettable thing that anyone can do. I will never forget what I was taught and the incredible memories I gained. The greatest thing of all about the experience of being a Kappa Sigma is that this experience does not stop after four years. It is something that will keep going until the day we die. For the rest of my life, I will be challenged by my brothers. For the rest of my life I will enjoy the benefits of Kappa Sigma as well as the time I have with my brothers. For the rest of my life I will become more and more mature because of the brothers that make up this fraternity. And most importantly, I will never forget for incredible experience that the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma gave me and will continue to give me for the rest of my life.

Saturday INITIATION BUSINESS MEETING Xi celebrates 125

Special Initiation US SENATOR JOHN BOOZMAN, ROGERS, ARKANSAS The initiation of U.S. Senator John N. Boozman (R-AR) came 50 years after the first “honorary” initiation was held in Kappa Sigma. U.S. Senator John McClellan (1965) was initiated at Xi on the occasion of Xi Chapter’s 75th anniversary. McClellan had two sons who were Xi Chapter initiates that died young. The January 1966 The Caduceus’ article about McClellan’s initiation paralleled his initiation with that of Jefferson Davis. Both men had served in the House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate – both were members of Xi Chapter. Like McClellan, Boozman had two family members who were Xi Chapter initiates. Boozman, who was a scholarship football player in the late 1960s, did not pledge a fraternity and left early to attend optometry school. Herman Boozman (1924) and Ralph Boozman (1933) are relatives of Senator Boozman. Herman, (pictured below) who was football Captain and Grand Master at the same time, is Senator Boozman’s great-uncle. He is a member of the Razorback’s All-Decade Team for the 1920s. Ralph Boozman is a cousin. During Herman Boozman’s term as GM, the chapter unknowingly violated a rush rule and was suspended by the University. During this period, the chapter erected a sign in the front yard proclaiming 711 W. Dickson as “Boozman’s Boarding House” in honor of football captain Boozman. Raised in Fort Smith, John graduated from Northside High School and went on to play football for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks while completing his pre-optometry requirements. He graduated from the Southern College of Optometry in 1977, and entered private practice that same year, co-founding a family business with his brother that would ultimately become a major provider of eye care to Northwest Arkansas. Brother Boozman serves on five committees and chairs two subcommittees in the 114th Congress: Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, Appropriations, Environment and Public Works (EPW), Rules, and Veterans’ Affairs. During his time on Capitol Hill, John has developed a close relationship with Brother Richard Burr (Nu 1975) serving on many committees together. John has had several Xi Chapter undergraduates serve as summer interns during his time in Washington. Former Senate Majority Leader and past Kappa sigma Man-of-the-Year winner Bob Dole composed a letter to congratulate Senator Boozman on his initiation, which was read during the banquet. Boozman also was presented the pin of 1916 Xi Chapter initiate Scott Hamilton. Following the letter and badge presentation, Boozman thanked the chapter and alumni for honoring him. Boozman told those in attendance that people from all over the state had been congratulating him on his pending initiation. He also commented how Xi Chapter initiates were leaders in the business and political communities all over the state. John and his wife Cathy, an alumnae of Zeta Tau Alpha at the U of A, have three grown daughters and two grandchildren. Note: Xi Chapter requested to initiate US Senate Majority Leader Joe T. Robinson in 1929, but it was denied as unconstitutional. Robinson had been the Vice Presidential nominee in 1928. Robinson’s brother, nephew, and many cousins were Xi Chapter initiates. Robinson attended the U of A prior to fraternities being allowed on campus. Since the 1965 initiation of Senator McClellan, the SEC has approved many special initiates to the betterment of the order.

Scholarship Report

This year has brought drastic changes to the academic program at XI. While we have always placed the utmost importance on academics, our newest partnership with Campus Concierge, a local company in Fayetteville, has brought us the opportunity to be an academic role model for all of Greek life. XI is proud to be the only fraternity on campus to offer free tutoring to members through the XI Tutoring Fund, made possible by our alumni base. Now, members have access to tutoring for every class, a quiet place to study, and timemanagement calendars with Campus Concierge. This company has been instrumental in improving our overall GPA and encouraging members to meet their full potential. We have also integrated this company into our pledgeship program. Campus Concierge proctors a study hall and sends a weekly report to the scholarship chair outlining the progress of each individual student. The feedback for this program has been extremely positive and the outcome has been very impressive. In the Fall of 2014, Xi introduced our scholarship committee. This group is made up of 12 members with a minimum of a 3.5 GPA who have exemplified academic excellence and have great leadership skills. During our pledgeship program, each member of this committee is assigned to a group of pledges to

aid and guide them through a successful first year of college. This makes our freshmen’s transition from high school to our University much smoother. Pledges are paired up with mentors that have the same major as they do so they can provide academic help in their current classes. Each mentor meets with his pledges once a week based on their academic need and current grades. By implementing this program, Xi had its highest pledge class GPA this past fall. Mentors have learned great leadership and time-management skills from this program and have really enjoyed the opportunity to help start a successful academic career for our new members. For the past several years, the Charlie B. Whiteside Scholarship has been awarded to four outstanding members of XI. This Scholarship, made possible through the generosity of our distinguished alumni, offers $1,000 to members that exemplify the qualities of a leader in XI and throughout campus. It is available to all members who have completed one academic year, maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25, and are currently in good standing with the chapter. The current academic environment in every college is extremely challenging at best, and balancing school, social life, and several other things is no easy feat. But the men that make up our chapter were initiated because they showed all the qualities of the four pillars, including scholarship. These men have the capacity to succeed at everything they put their minds to, and have helped each other overcome feat after feat in the academic battle we all go through. With this character, and the tools that Xi can bring them, there is no denying the impact these men will have on the community in the future.

Since 1990, nearly $55,000 in scholarships have been awarded to deserving members of Xi Chapter.

Xi Chapter Alumni are committed to helping young men succeed both on campus and off. To that end, the Xi Chapter Alumni and Friends have established two separate vehicles to underwrite scholarships, a tutoring program, a lecture series, and to provide other educational aids to Xi Chapter and its undergraduates. The Xi Educational Foundation was the beneficiary of all net proceeds from the Xi125 celebration, which exceeded $75,000. These funds will be used to partially underwrite the D. Malcolm McNair, Jr. Senior Leadership Program at Xi Chapter. On the occasion of the Centennial Celebration of Xi Chapter, chapter alumni and friends established the Charles B. Whiteside Scholarship Fund. This fund was established to recognize the tireless work of Charlie Whiteside, who has served as President of Xi Corporation and the Xi Alumni Association since April of 1974. The Whiteside Scholarships provide direct awards to undergraduates of Xi Chapter.

As part of the Xi Project 2000, the Xi Educational Foundation of Arkansas was established. This foundation is a 501(c)3 educational endowment fund with a mission of helping to reduce educational costs for undergraduates of Xi Chapter. Xi foundation underwrites the tutoring program at Xi Chapter and also underwrites other educational expenses. When the foundation was created, the Xi Chapter Man-ofthe-Year lecture series on the U of A campus was created. Every year, the foundation sponsors or helps sponsor a distinguished lecture that is coordinated by the colleges of Xi Chapter’s five Kappa Sigma International Man of the Year winners: Thomas J. Williams, Charles L. Massey, E. Fay Jones, Jerrel W. Jones, and Philip S. Anderson. In 2013, longtime Xi Corporation Vice President George McLeod made a 401K transfer to the Whiteside Scholarship Fund to help increase our total foundation assets to $1 million. Xi Foundation thanks George for his lead gift and many, many years of service. Mom’s CLUB

The purpose of the Kappa Sigma Mom’s Club is to be a support network for the boys in the fraternity. We have a membership drive each fall and encourage all moms to sign up. Our Mom’s Club was established in 1987 and we have a great history of support for our boys. I want to encourage you to be an active member of our Fabulous Xi Mom’s Club! I began to learn about mom’s club when my twin boys pledged in 2011 and I became Mom’s Club president the following year. Our previous President and Vice President were active for seven years as they each had two sons active in the house during those years. This group comprises around 150 moms of current pledges and members. We host or cohost several events: mom’s day in the spring, parents/dad’s day in the fall during football season, decorate for Christmas, co-host a Christmas open house, provide dinners when the kitchen is closed and snacks during finals weeks, and this year we assisted with the chapter 125th anniversary by providing food for one of the night’s events.

Last year we purchased a sectional, ottoman, and table for the basement to provide a spot to watch TV, play pool, or socialize. We also helped refurbish some of the composites that needed repair. We are hoping this year to purchase additional furnishings for the living room and upstairs study area. This is an excellent way to become involved with your son, his fellow Kappa Sig brothers and get to know their moms. There are many ways to participate including paying dues, attending Mom’s Day, signing up for a committee, sharing a talent, and if in closer proximityassisting with Christmas decorating and volunteering to serve as an officer. There are plenty of opportunities for moms to get involved with our group. Watch for an email that will go out after rush to the new pledges and current member moms. There will be info on joining. There will be a calendar of events and updates sent out as needed to keep you informed in advance. Dad’s Day 2014 The Xi Chapter hosted its annual Dad’s day this year on September 20th. The fathers of the brothers were invited down for the weekend for our annual tailgate and watched the Razorbacks beat Nicholls State 73-7 later that evening. After the game, everyone reunited at the Xi Chapter House and enjoyed live music and created many memories that will last a lifetime. The annual Dad’s Day is something that each member looks forward to every Fall, and we believe that the dads look forward to it just much! Thank you to all the dads that came for the weekend and helped put on a great weekend.

... a deeper understanding of what Fabulous Xi is all about “MOM B” BRENDA REA The entire academic year of 2014-2015 at Kappa Sigma has been an exciting and dynamic one. The guys began by participating in an Ice Water Challenge to benefit ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). The event was televised during the Alabama game, as was an interview with GM Bryce Larry, GP Austin Nolan, and Recruitment Chair Sam Farris. In addition to raising money for ALS, the event was tremendous fun and a wonderful way to start the year. Fall and Spring Recruitment both were, as always, excellent. Xi Chapter definitely has the edge in recruiting, and a busy week always results in our gaining a great new group of young men. I can never wait to see the makeup of our new group, and am never disappointed. We always get the best! Our pledges participated in the University’s annual Remember the Crosswalk event. They really got into it! As well, a number of pledges and members were there to greet Dean Danny Pugh and volunteers for the opening of the parking lot during Bikes, Blues & BBQ to benefit the Knights of Columbus. As always, I enjoyed our “Dinner with Mom B” evenings at Foghorn’s. It’s fun to visit with the guys away from the house, and they always make me proud. And wearing Xi attire certainly doesn’t stop our guys from cleaning or from moving the new pool table! Two of our pledges, Colin Byrd and Parker Kelley, tragically lost their dads (Chris Byrd and Bill Kelley) this Fall. It reminds us that we never know how long we’ll have with our loved ones, and makes our Dad’s Day this Fall all the more special. Several members also lost grandparents and my hope is that they and their families will be able to remember the good times with their lost ones and be comforted. There were many times during the year that were important to me. We had a wonderful Mom’s Day, great philanthropy events (the boys won an award for one!), and Xi also won the Award of Excellence from U of A Greek Life. I will never forget Fabulous Xi’s three-day celebration of the chapter’s 125th Anniversary. Xi125 was fabulous in so many ways from planning to execution. Many, many hours were expended by volunteers to make it so. It meant so much to meet a number of the alumni who I have heard many wonderful stories about and to know that they still enjoy seeing each other. It gave me a deeper understanding of what Fabulous Xi is all about. I believe that our current officers and members, who already loved this house, also gained a deeper appreciation and love for it and I am eager to see what their excitement will bring in the future.
