"You can't please all of the people all of the time," is a particularly apt paraphrasing of an old saying when considering Rush Week. And to make it into a good rule to follow when choosing your fraternity you might add "Don't try."

Despite all of the advice that you will receive during the time that you are considering which fraternity to join, the final decision will rest with you and you alone. It will he impossible for your decision to please everybody, so you should make certain that you do what you think best.

In order to assist you in making your decision, we have prepared this booklet about our home and history, our outstanding leaders and scholars, our activities and life. We hope that you will look over the articles about Kappa Sigma and fraternities in general that we have included, and, perhaps with the advice and counsel of your parents and friends who are already in a fraternity, you will he able to approach Rush W eek with fewer questions than you now have. You will h e interested in reading the article on page 18 about Rush Week and some of the problems that rushees encounter. You might find the suggestions there helpful.

You will find that a college term means much more than pencils and hooks and term papers. During nine months out of the year the Kappa Sig house is filled with a hundred and twenty men, working together to continue the traditions of a great Fraternity. You have been recommended to us as a man possessing the qualities that are desirous in a member of Kappa Sigma. We are proud of our Fraternity. We think that Kappa Sigma is the best Greek letter society on the campus. Some of the reasons are contained in this hook. We hope that you will give Kappa Sig serious consideration, and we are looking forward to seeing you during Rush Week at Arkansas.

THE ROAD AHEAD "WHICH WAY?" When a young man finishes high school and prepares to enter college, he finds himself at a crossroads. He can take the path through the four years of college that is traveled by the majority of students; it is the path of acquiesence, a trail of conformation. The traveler neglects when neglect is to conform, he agrees (perhaps without understanding) when agreement constitutes conformation. The traveler finds his way brightly lighted, because there have been many before him. But when his journey is over, this traveler finds that through his conformation he has achieved anonymity; the strength of character, the perceptibility, and the understanding that mark an individual are not his, because such belongs only to those that would seek them.

The other path is traveled by fewer students, because it is the harder way. The traveler must seek .. truth when truth is confused with convention; he must stand alone when his convictions do not allow conformation. The traveler of this path must develop and adhere to a sense of moral values that reflects an appreciation and an understanding of the very precepts of a Christian society.

When the traveler arrives at the end of this pa th, he finds that he possesses a knowledge that is enriched with a sympathetic understanding and wisdom; he will proceed not into a struggle, but rather toward a challenge that he is well prepared to meet.

This is the way of Kappa Sigma. We feel that a young man is influenced by association, and that inspiration toward higher ideals is an invitation to success. In the next few pages we will attempt to depict Kappa Sigma at Arkansas ... the Fraternity ... the men ... and the opportunity.

It has been said that since a fraternity is made up of men, the reputation of a fraternity is therefore a reflection of the character of the men therein.

If this is true, then the reputation of Kappa Sigma is enhanced by ambition, but such that it is a courteous ambition, restrained by respect and patience. Ambition is a necessary and vital element in Kappa Sigma.

Past Grand Master Tony Boyett once wrote that "the summit for a fraternity is only the place from which to descend." This is true. It is also true that ambition is a cousin of leadership. For this reason Kappa Sigma develops and encourages leadership, both in the fraternity and on the campus.

THE INDISPENSABLE FACTOR The greatest waste of time and money possible occurs when a college student does not take full advantage of the opportunities to knowledge that are afforded at every university. It is with this thought in mind that Kappa Sigma designed its far-reaching and effective scho larship program.

Xi Chapter follows a pledge program that complements the scholarship plan of the national fraternity . Kappa Sigma pledges are required to attend a study hall that is maintained in the Kappa Sigma dining room every night Monday through Thursday from 7 :00 until 9 :00. "Quiet Hours" are en forced in order that study will not be disturbed. If a pledge develops trouble in a certain course of study, English for example, the Pledge Master will see that additional in struction is provided for the pledge by one of the members who is majoring in English.

Xi Chapter offers a small but substantial scholarship to the pledge with the highest grade-point at the e nd of th e first semeste r.

Kappa Sigma Fraternit y has a scholarship fund of $20,100. Scholarships ranging from fifty to three hundred dollars are available to members of

every Kappa Sigma chapte r . These scholarships are based on grade-point, leadership, and scholarship improvement. Last yea r Bill H e n son, Fort Smith, won a SlOO scholarship from the na ti onal fraternity fund.

This program has proved its effectiveness. In Xi Chapter we have such scholars as Brick Dumas and Bob Wright, both members of Phi Beta Kappa, liberal arts honorary schola stic fraternity; Doug Smith, Beta Gamma Sigma, business honorary ; and Garnett Massey and Phil Anderson, members of Phi Eta Sigma, freshman h onor societ y.

The indispensable factor of every college student's life is scholarship.

Many stude nts, howeve r, lose sight of the primary objective of college-to secure an education- and spend their _four years al the university investigating the side-roads of diversion a nd trying to discover a short cut to a degree.

The first thing that a Kappa Sigma pledge is taught is that knowledge is the reward of hard work and diligence; the so-calle d "shortcut" does not exist.

In the Monday night pledge lectures, the subject of scholarship and good

study habits, along with etiquette, fraternity history, etc., is explained and discussed.

The scholarship of the pledge is of primary concern to Kappa Sigma. For adjustment in this field alone may well determine the success or failure of the student in the fraternity and University, and in his life to come.

The story of Kappa Sigma begins, not in an American unive rsity of the 19th century as most other fraternities do, but stretches across the ages from the year 1400, and the University of Bologna in Italy. Since the time of the opening of the university in 1088, foreign stude nts were hinde re d b y many severe restrictions, and often times these students were set upon b y bands of robbers and kille d. So it was in the beginning of the 15th century, when the univer5ily had an e nrollme nt of some ten thousand, that the oppressed students, under the leadership of a Greek Scholar, Emanuel Chrysoloras, organized themselves into a society for their mutual protection against the wicke d governor of the City of Bologna, Balthasar Cossa.

From this b eginning the order gr ew in size and importance, enrolling many of the ancient and fa mous names of Europe, including the Medi-

cis and Michelangelo. By virtue of its early founding Kappa Sigma is the second oldest fraternal organization, outdated only by the Masonic Orde r .

From the five great univer sities of Europe, centuries late r the Order of Kappa Sigma sprea d to America, the first chapter being at the Unive rsity of Virginia, organized in December, 1869. It was founded there by five young men, who bound together as they said, " to enjoy and increase the pleasures which are only to be obtained by the intercourse of congenial spirits." From its original five members in one chapter, the fraternity has grown into an inte rnational organization of 127 chapters and o ver 67,000 living members. Expanding carefully, the chapters are locat ed at the best colleges and universities in the United States and Canada and each represents a credit to the fraternity and its particular campus. Kappa Sigma today stands an outstanding and li ving tribute to an ancient a nd proud organization.

Xi Chapter was founded at the University of Arkansas May 29, 1890, b y a group of men including Charles M. Futrell, who later b ecame president of the U niversity. Xi was the 38th chapter in a rising fraternity. It was the first fraternity in Arkansas, has been on the campus actively for sixty-five years, and has initiated some 1,300 men. The history of Kappa Si gma at Arkansas dates back longer than any other; it is a fraternity that has grown as the University ha s grown and has found its history interwoven with that of the state and its leaders. It is as true today as it was in the past, the ivy covered red brick walls on Dickson Street surround the "congenial spirits" idealized by our five mode rn founders, and ever present is the spirit and fellowship that marked the ancient order of 1400.

Past Grand Master Bill Ketchum's favorite story concerns a 70-year-old Kappa Sig from Lonoke. The venerable alum was passing the time of day with two other elderly gentlemen when the subject of college fraternities was brought up.

"I used to be a Delta Epsilon," said the other.

He said simply, "I am a Kappa Sig." The sto ry is true, and it clearly illu strates the fact that the interest in Kappa Sigma is a living interest, and it conti nu es to grow even after graduation from the University.

The truth of this statement is evidenced by such men as Tom Cutting. Brother Cutting is the president of a successful manufacturing firm in Fort Smith, but he find s time to serve on the alumni advisory committee of the Fraternity, he makes nu路 merous visits to the hou se and is present every rush week. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Arkansas Alumni Association; and two years ago he served as Worthy Grand Master of Kappa Sigma, the international president of the Fraternity.

The recently elected president of the University of Arkansas Alumni Association, Louis Ramsay, is also a Kappa Sigma.

Alumni Secretary Dusty Rhodes Brother Ramsay is now a member of the law firm of Cole man, Gantt, and Ram say in Pine Bluff, and wa s voted Pine Bluff's Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1949.

Robert M . (Du sty) Rhodes, who was editor of the Traveler while a student, is serving his sixth year as executive secretary of the Alumni Association and edi tor of the association's official magazine, The Arkansas Alumnus. Brother Rhodes is faculty advisor to Xi Chapter and is active in Fraternity affairs.

Thomas J. Williams, another alumnus of Xi Chapter, was recently elected 1955 Man of the Year by the Inte rnational Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Brother Williams is a min e r of tungsten and brimstone, che mi ca l merchant, cattle ranch er, head of fifteen companies in Argentina and reputedly one of the wealthiest North Americans in South America. He was the subjec t of a feature article in the New York Times earlier thi s year. After leav in g the - University shortly before World War I, Brother Williams went to South America as a towel salesman, so ld co tton good s for five years, began.importing chemicals on the side, and started co llecti ng tung sten mines. Today h e is one of the most influential men in South America. Despite the fact that h e ha s been out of the active chapter at Fay路 etteville for more than forty years, Brother Williams' interest in Kappa Sigma ha s never lagged. While he ha s been particularly interested in the sc holarsh ip fund, hi s work for the Fraternit y as a whole ha s been outstanding.

As Brother Tom Cutting said in a speech to an international convention of the Fraternity in St. Loui s, "When a frat<'rnity <'an hold a man's interest after he has left the chapter house and th e assembled Lrothers, and if that interest can grow and become a living interest, then that fraternity is great. By thi s token alone, one of the greatest frat erni ti es is Kappa Sigma."

The Kappa Sigma house at Arkansas is one of the largest fraternity houses in the world.

Xi Chapter has been located at 711 West Dickson Street since the early 1920' s, when W. H. Bransford, Sr., of Lonoke, and several other Kappa Sigs (the house at that. time was on Nord Hill) completed the negotiations which resulted in Kappa Sigma buying the property and building the house as it now stands, with the exception of the dining room, which was added in 1948. Xi Chapter owns the deed to the property and the house outright. The facilities offered by the house are unexcelled.

While Kappa Sigma will probably never again put a dancing platform and bandstand on stilts and flood the dining room to give realism to the "Sinking of the Titanic" Party, imagination and originality are still the earmarks of all Kappa Sig parties. The first party of the year after rush is the pl~dge party, which is held the night after bids are extended.

During football season, weekend parties and listening parties in the afternoon, when the team plays out of state, are held in the basement.

The fall semester is climaxed with the Christmas Formal, which is usually held a week before Christ· mas vacation. The reception is in the chapter house and the dance is held in the U-Ark Bowl. After the dance, breakfast is served to Kappa Sigs and their dates at the house.

The second semester social season begins with the Valentine Party in February and is highlighted by costume parties, such as the Suppressed Desire and Hollywood Premier parties in March and April. The Stardust Ball is traditionally the largest dance of the year; features an outdoor reception on the Kappa Sigma lawn and dance in the gaily decorated U-Ark Bowl. The culmination of the year's social program is the Spring Outing.

Kappa Sigma is a social fraternity, and while the other phases of University life are not neglected, the 'parties and dances are thoroughly enjoyed hy the Kappa Sigs and the girls they date.

JAM SESSIONS, held in the dining room after the dances, are attended by members of other fraternities as well as Kappa Sigs. An early breakfast is sometimes provided by the Kitchen Manager.

SPRING OUTING is last social event of year, held at Grand Lake, Oklahoma.

RUSH WEEK ITS ,CAUSE AND CURE Rush Week is a necessary evil. It is necessary because it is during that time that the fraternities have an opportunity to look over the boys desiring to join a Greek letter society, and by the same token, that the boys desiring to join a fraternity have an opportunity to look over the Greeks. It is evil became it is impossible to become thoroughly acquainted on eith er side during a few short days. The term "Rush Week" is r ea lly a misnomer; the actual rushing only lasts four days. The four days, however, seem a great deal longer than they actually are.

During that time the rushee will visit every fraternity house on the campus, attend six parties, and generally become so <;On· fused that he · would be willing to junk the whole thing anJ try next year if he wouldn't have the whole thing to go throu gh again. Rush Week is just one big, glorified handshake.

put a man to is for the rushee to ask himself, "Would I be proud to introduce this boy to my Mother as my fraternity brother?" The freshman will be surprised at how fast he can narrow the field down with this system.

The fraternities have minimized the confusion a s much as po ssible from their end. The rushee will find the four days mudi less hectic if he organizes his thoughts and enters rush week with a definite plan. At the first rush parties the ru shee should ask to be introduced to the fraternity officers. These are extremely important because these are the men who will lead the fraternity during the coming year. Next the rushee should ask to be introduced to outstanding juniors. Some of these men might already hold lesser offices in the fraternity, but the heavy burdens of fraternity leadership will not be theirs for another year. The success or failure of a fraternity in the immediate future might well be determined by the character of the juniors.

The sophomores are important to the rushee because these are the men that he will live with the longest. The best test to

One final word: the rushee should set his sights high. If a man wants to pledge a fraternity there is no reason why he shouldn't pledge the best. And it's perfectly all right to make a commit· ment the final night of rushing if the rushee ha s definitely made up his mind. The rushee should at least be able to tell a fraternity whether or not he is interested. But the rushee should not, by any means, commit himself early in the game; he might change his mind.

There will he smooth sailing ahead, from all reports. A little difficult going upstream sometimes, hut it's a lot better than floating with the tide.

Almost everyone appreciates the best, so the Coca-Cola people say, and we said once before that a man who doesn't think that his fraternity is the best on the campus doesn't belong in the organization. We sincerely believe that.
