_BACKGROUND _SOCIAL & POLITICAL CONDITION _PROPOSED SOLUTION BACKGROUND Bateq people are nomadic indigenous people belong to Semang / Negrito group. They are main based in Pahang, Terengganu and our site, Kelantan.

These independent aboriginal forest guardians in Kuala Koh, Kelantan are then facing issues in continuing living isolate from the outside world alongside with the development of country.

How to tackle?

PROPOSED SOLUTION: Education and awareness programs which strengthen connection and awareness of public towards Bateq are the ways forward to preserve their identity and quality of life.

PROPOSED SOLUTION

COVID-19

Meru is a town located in district of Klang, Selangor, Malaysia. It is known as major industrial area since 1988, alongside with the establishment of the first latex glove company.

PROJECT

• Social needs cannot be fulfilled.

FLOOD •

Flash flood at the town due to:

•

Community benefits themselves by growing their own food, especially at times of uncertainty.

•

Connect residents, especially retired elderly around the site [to help with the management of the garden].

•

Neighborhood recreational area Provide spaces or attractions for residents to relax and communicate among each of them.

•

Part of the harvested food are to be cooked and distribute to the families in difficulties, while part of them will be sold.

How to tackle?

o High rainfall precipitation through the year. o Poor drainage system.

Store surface water and rainwater for plants irrigation and building domestic usage.

•

Create drainage system that reduce burden on existing site drainage system and avoid overflow of water from the open drain to the site.

_ S P E C U L AT I V E D R A W I N G

The speculative form and operation is mainly reflecting to the flood issue.

The upper part / elevated structure is inspired from the Hanging Garden of Babylon. It is a structure with a form of ziggurat.

The Hanging Garden of Babylon • Efficient for the irrigation of vegetation Water will be delivered to the top of the structure before receiving by the plants.

• Protects the community garden from flood water.

• Landmark of the area and community gathering point.

In contrast, the excavated structure down to the ground is inspired from the form, function and design of Chand Baori Stepwell, India. It act as water catchment tank with a series of steps descending from ground level to the water source (normally underground aquifer).

HOW WATER CATCHMENT AREA / TANK OPERATES? The water catchment will collect and store rainwater and surface water at the site. It will then deliver them to the filtration and sanitation tank before part of them are circulate back to the water catchment tank, pumped to store in water cisterns for irrigation of plants in community garden and domestic usage of the building.

When there are excess of water, water from the water catchment area will flow to the nearby open drain branched out from Sungai Kapar Besar. In contrast, open drain water will be pumped in when there area no sufficient water at the water catchment tank.

Kite Museum Project: Design Studio 4 Location: Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.

A museum which educate people in appreciating the beauty of kites, learning how it is made and providing space for kite flying. It is designed to be located at existing parking space between Istana Budaya and Balai Seni Negara, Kuala Lumpur.

_SITE The site is in the size of approximate 3500sqm within the set back line. It is located at the existing carpark between Istana Budaya and National Visual Art Gallery (Balai Seni Negara) which able to link to the Titiwangsa Park at North. It possess great potential to expand the program of the designed building (e.g. kite flying activity) to the park.

Also, from the micro analysis, it shows the wind comes from north east and south west.

_ CASE STUDY [Spatial planning] EWHA CAMPUS COMPLEX Seoul, South Korea.

CONNECTION BETWEEN THE CITY AND CAMPUS

Architects: Dominique Perrault Architecture Area: 70000 m² Year: 2008 Ewha Campus Complex (ECC) is a 6-storey eco-friendly and sustainable building which connects visitors to the nature, underground spaces and other parts of campus via the implementation of green roof and building form following the site topography. It act as a gateway for visitors to access to the other parts of campus.

This building follows the concept of ‘valley’ to create a sense of connection between the lower area at the city of Sinchon to the higher area of the campus. A large passage is carved at the centre of the building. Visitors circulate radially from the passage into any part of the building.

_ CASE STUDY [Facade] PINWHEEL PAVILION London’s Museum Gardens, London.

A P P L I C AT I O N O F T H E C O N C E P T T O T H E B U I L D I N G FA Ç A D E & E L E M E N T

Architects: Five line projects Area: 64 m² Year: 2016 Pinwheel pavilion is inspired by a children’s toy, pinwheel. It aim to show the idea that the action of a single individual triggers a chain reaction by a greater number, positively influencing the wider community via the movement of pinwheel.

This pavilion is built up of 1800 bamboo pinwheels fixed to ‘forest’ of stainless-steel rods. Some of them are placed adjacently and overlapping the fins to create a chain motion. When one is spinning a pinwheel, a few more pinwheel will spin together.

Location: Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.

An interactive and movable pavilion inspired by Theo Jansen Machine, shortlisted to be constructed in the collaborative Program between UCSI University and National Art Gallery.

_CONCEPT AND PHILOSOPHY

This is a moving and interacting pavilion which tend to enrich visitors experience to the Balai Seni Negara. Despite sightseeing, it requires active involvement of the visitors in ‘completing’ the motion of the pavilion. It act as the tangible heritage itself (wau) by educating people on the concept and element of wau while appreciating its beauty.

When ones sit and swing the bench provided at the pavilion, the whole form and structure will change its shape from time to time. In addition, it creates kite-like motion when the tensile fabric shading devices flutters along the individual’s motion.

He or she able to enjoy and observe the patterned shadow casting from the patterned tensile fabric as the layering of coloured paper in wau.

_DESIGN

The 4100mm (L) x 4300mm (W) x 3100mm (H) pavilion is built up of timber planks and columns, metal main supporting structure, patterned tensile fabric and ball bearings to enable the movement.

There are 3 bench, permissible for 2 individuals to sit and swing at each of them. The form move as shown in the GIF alongside with the swing motion.

Pendant light can be installed at the extrusion from the main supporting structure. The lightning at night able to show nice shadow casting of the structure.

_DESIGN

The motion of the pavilion is inspired by the Theo Jansen Machine.

Theo Jansen Machine is a planar leg mechanism designed by the kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen to generate a smooth walking motion. It was applied on the kinetic sculptures which are known as Strandbeesten (Dutch for "beach beasts").

The fixed points and measurement of the structure is manipulated to apply on the pavilion.
