SITE ANALYSIS OF MERU, KLANG [GROUP] General study of the town divided into 5 parcels are initially done before 3 proposed sites and their analysis are carried out.

The observation to the existing surrounding buildings, local planning regulations and requirements and general crises and design parameters are also included in the final report.

15 MINUTES LIFE CIRCLE_RECONNECT: GARDEN Site B proposed from task 1A is set as focal point of 15 minutes life circle.

A bicycle lane is introduced to connect 4 activity points along the loop.

4 activity points proposed are: 1_Community garden + social area 2_Community garden + organic product processing workshop 3_Community kitchen + dining area 4_Selling spot

Parts of the harvested crops from community garden can be cooked and served in community kitchen and dining area while some of them can be sold to the public.

Explorations of structure, form and arrangement in combining the elevated community garden and water catchment area to the site selected.

The final design is the hollow elevated stepped pyramid garden covering part of water catchment area to allow ventilation and effective circulation.

MERU, KLANG. Meru is a town located in district of Klang, Selangor, Malaysia. It is known as major industrial area since 1988, alongside with the establishment of the first latex glove company.

This creates working opportunities and attracts work forces from all places. The town experience drastic increase of population, fast development and higher demand of residents towards different

facilities. Thus, a large gap of architecture, life style and others between rural and urban area exist in the town. Also, it is badly affected by the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic as hundreds of workers were tested and reported positive last year (2020).

Some crises or issues of Meru are analysed and 3 sites are initially selected for students in continuing

CRISES & ITS SOLUTIONS OF SELECTED SITE ANTHROPOLOGY [CULTURES & COMMUNITIES] Lack of social interaction between individual due to isolation in consequence to the outbreak of Covid-19 and frequent flooding due to poor drainage system at the site are identified as 2 main crises to reacts.

How to tackle?

•

Community benefits themselves by growing their own food, especially at times of uncertainty.

•

Connect residents, especially retired elderly around the site [to help with the management of the garden].

•

Neighborhood recreational area - Provide spaces or attractions for residents to relax and communicate among each of them.

•

Part of the harvested food are to be cooked and distribute to the families in difficulties, while part of them will be sold.

• High rainfall precipitation through the year.

Poor drainage system.

Store surface water and rainwater for plants irrigation and building domestic usage.

Create drainage system that reduce burden on existing site drainage system and avoid overflow of water from the open drain to the site.

FLOOD IN MERU TOWN • Averagely 2 serious floods annually and affect more than 500 houses.

• The poor drainage system planning cause flooding when there is heavy rain greater than 30 minutes at the town.

• Knee-height flood which require at least 12 hours to recede damage furniture and personal possessions of the residents.

• Thus, a water catchment area at the beginning or starting part of the drainage system able to reduce water flow into the existing drainage system while reusing and treating them for different purposes.

SPACES WATER CATCHMENT AREA / TANK This area collects rainwater and surface water at the site. It is an initiative in reducing the burden of the existing drainage system when heavy rain.

Storing rainwater and surface water slow down the flow of water to the nearby open drain and thus minimize chance and frequency of flood.

The water collected can then be treated for the domestic usage of building and irrigation of plants at the community garden. It will continuously circulate between the tank and the filtration tank and create swirl of water. This lower the surrounding temperature and enable it to become a decorative attraction of the garden.

Swirl of excessive collected water deliver out to open drain via pipe at the centre of the tank.

SPACES WATER MANAGEMENT ROOM The collected water from the water catchment area will be delivered to the water tank in water management room. It filter the sediment of the water before sanitise them for building domestic usage.

The clean water will then pump to the water cisterns at block A and block B for washrooms, kitchen and community garden and so on. Also, part of the clean water will deliver back to the water catchment area to dilute the slightly muddy water collected.

SPACES HOW WATER CATCHMENT AREA / TANK OPERATES? The water catchment will collect and store rainwater and surface water at the site. It will then deliver them to the filtration and sanitation tank before part of them are circulate back to the water catchment tank, pumped to store in water cisterns for irrigation of plants in community garden and domestic usage of the building.

When there are excess of water, water from the water catchment area will flow to the nearby open drain branched out from Sungai Kapar Besar. In contrast, open drain water will be pumped in when there area no sufficient water at the water catchment tank. irrigation Building domestic usage

SPACES COMMUNITY GARDEN + BICYCLE LANE Community garden located at first floor integrate with the cycling lane.

Visitors able to rent a bicycle and cycling around the site and to surrounding sport hall, tennis court, night market and so on. Also, the community garden enable people to plant their own food and help individuals in difficulties. It encourages people to come out from their house and reconnect themselves with the society as they are to ‘live together’ with Covid-19 after vaccination has been taken.
