Project description:

Commissioned by Hyundai, DAS created the large-scale panoramic mural 798 for Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing. Around 14.5 meters in width and 12.7 meters in height, the mural takes the 798 Art Zone as the representative to depict the status of today’s city in the context of information overload.

Role:

In this project, participated in the section of concept developing, field work and drawing production. We first picked up our bases for future modeling, then we went to the exact constructions for measurement and came up with the site plan by using AutoCAD. After that, we use SketchUp for detail modeling, which includes separable windows, walls, and furniture, etc. As the modeling finished, we put it into AutoCAD for line cleaning and other modifications. We colored the drawing in Adobe Illustrator not until the line cleaning was done. The whole process took about three months.

IMPLOSION

In order to present as many views, scenes, and spaces as possible, we used a series of techniques in this architectural drawing: explosion, torsion, cutting, slipping, transforming coordinate systems. In order to seamlessly aggregate fragments of myriad spaces, we let the building fragments flip to the best angle in the air to ensure the best part of 798 is facing the audiences. All these modifications are making to produce more details and higher density, In other words, we push the space to the limit in one dimension.

3mm AND 1:36

We tested several times to figure out the lightweight that we should use, in order to ensure that the audience has the best watching experience.

Observation:

Johannesburg is a storied city that reflect a legacy shaped by the gold rush migration, apartheid planning, and recent immigration. At first glance, the city appears to be diverse, both in function and demography. Migrants and foreign traders are dispersed throughout the city, underpinning the trade-based economy. But underneath the colorful and vibrant facade lies problems with roots entrenched in the city’s xenophobic past. Geographic boundaries are synonymous with ethnic and religious boundaries, forming enclaves that limit interaction between dissimilar groups.

Unreasonable, over-scaled planning, led to the abandonment and failure of the Newton area. Additionally, this whole district, along with Chinatown, have become a buffer cutting across the CBD and Fordsburg. An international bus station brings Zimbabwe and Nigerian cross border merchants are confined to a mobile enclave in the shape of corridor separated from the city. The city of immigrants has become intolerant to immigrants. Prejudices, conflicts, contradictions are poisoning the city.

Potential and proposal:

This project challenges the context of internalization, punctuate the boundary of existing enclaves in Johannesburg by infiltrating and hybridizing different characteristics from adjacent enclaves. Newtown and Old Chinatown are in the intersection of most enclaves, giving them the most potential and opportunities to bring the city back to life again.

MIXED PROGRAMS

Encourage the diversity of programs to meet with the increasing demands of communication, employment, entertainment, etc.

MAGNET SCHOOLS

Take the nearby Sci-bono center and Art district as an advantage, create the education center of Johannesburg.

STRATEGIES

In the existing urban fabric, there are 3 basic block typologies in Fordsburg and the inner city. They are huge block with single use building, small block with single use building and small block with high rised building.

In this case, small scale blocks make the community more walkable. The mix-used buildings encourage different commercial activities and events.

TRANSPORTATION

Replan the BRT line. Increase the accessibility along the linkage between JNB DWTN and Fordsburg.

AFFODABLE HOUSING

Provide affordable housing for not only low-income people but also single mothers and others.

RAINGARDEN SYSTEM

Increase green space to create a healthy living environment, while capturing the water for second use.

FRAMEWORK

Increase connectivity: Redefine the hierarchy of road system; Relink Fordsburg, Newtown and inner city though a new BRT line. Reduce vacancy: Fullfill the existing vacancy in the site with housing, increase the population density of Newtown precinct; Introduce educational facilities to the site. Improve walkability: Introduce parks and public space to the site; Relink the exsiting open space and proposed open space; Improve the walkability to main transit points.

Project Introduction: Downtown Carrollton Station is a DART station located north of Dallas. The site provides easy commute access as it only takes around 30 minutes to reach downtown Dallas. The major advantages are the newly developed luxury apartments which contribute to the residential intensity of the area, providing a steady ridership on DART.

However, the existing 3 trails have made this site as complex as it can be. Looking at the current road structure, I try to continue and reinforce the gesture that has exist, at the same time bring in new program that can not only used by the tourists who are taken from the region by the Cotton Belt and DART, but also providing a facility that can be engaged by the community which is surrounding it.

INTENSITY OF DOWNTOWN CARROLLTON

Downtown Carrollton Station is a DART station located north of Dallas. The site provides easy commute access as it only takes around 30 minutes to reach downtown Dallas. The current half a mile radius of the station has several advantages and potentials for improvement as we have shown throughout our analysis. The major advantages are the newly developed luxury apartments which contribute to the residential intensity of the area, providing a steady ridership on DART. The other advantage is the industrial zone on the west of DART which provides employment for the area.

Existing complex transportation status

READING THE SITE

The average height of buildings in Downtown Carrollton is about 36ft(3 stories). Restrict the height of the construction. Clear up the intricate transportation system.

Project Introduction:

The project mainly focuses on the development of the community by using art production as a catalyst while the new coming metro is crossing this area.

In 2040, the population booms, which indicates the need of mix used structures, residential, green corridor and ecological systems to improve the walk-ability in this area and also a platform for conversation between different kinds of people such as artists, musicians and painters.

[Group model of St. Louis]

ART SYSTEM + LANSCAPE SYSTEM

The existing cherokee street is one of the busiest commercial street in St. Louis. By introducing people into the site for art events, the area will come to live again. I extend the exsiting paper workshop, which is currently located in a short distance from the upcoming metro station, and place different art stores along the corridor. Besides, city park in different shapes and used are also proposed to encourage the diversity of landscape system.

EAST FOREST + ART CORRIDOR

As the Lemp brewery being turned into an art factory, the parper products is in great need. The east forest provide the resource of paper making, as the same time help improving the air quality of the whole area. The art corridor encourages the local art to world-wide art activites.

WATERFRONT + ART PARK

The water deck and the overlook deck on the tourist tower provides a great view of Missisipi river. The art park becomes a good place for residents to hang out.

PARK + ART STORE

The art products can be sold in the art store on the first floor of the building. The bioswale contributes to a good view of the city park.

Project Introduction:

This project located in pearl road tram station. We focus on the potential area of the site, which based on the analysis of space syntax. The upcoming tram line seperates the site into 2 isolated area. As a result, it becomes a problem for people to cross the road to the other side safely.

We decided to re-stitch the area by creating an underground connection, bring new functions and activitiese in to meet various demands of different kinds of people, like tourism, local residents and the government.

New transportation in Zhuhai:

The tram belongs to the new urban element, its Intervention on the streets of the original form of space and the way people travel have different degrees of shadow ring. A large number of people flow from the orbital station to the system linked to the street space, and gathered in this.

Therefore, the street surrounding the Pearl Road station as an important public space, is the daily living of residents. Moving the carrier, but also around the Pearl Road Station, a city image. In this context, The street tram site around the street space should be recreate.

CONNECTION OF THE PLAZA AND THE STATION

As a new street car railway have been built, which cut the planning site into two pieces, the project tries to reconnect both sides of the road spatially and prgrammatically. First, a new underground plaza is created without the interence of vehicle. The stairs in front of library and offices lead the people to the underground laza, instead of using the entrances that have been built. While the exsiting extrances are removed, sidewalk will be wider than before. Comfortable walking experience and abundant activities can be provided.

BAITASI is a complex area located literally in the center of BEIJING. The thing I always thought remarkable about this place is its persistence in highly developed city, it is a place full of history and memory. We are looking for a way to enhance the memory of Hutong by removing old things on the path and pluging in a fluid wall which will give more function and possibility into this small space.
