Welcome to the first edition of SEBA 2022: RISE UP!

Earlier this year, Yayasan Usahawan Malaysia announced the theme SEBA 2022: RISE UP, where we are expanding into three chapters - the Northern Edition, Southern Edition, and the KL Grand Central, for our 7th instalment.

The objective of this movement was to draw attention to deserving SMEs and entrepreneurs in the Northern and Southern regions. At the same time, the KL Grand Central edition serves as the pinnacle of recognition.

The Northern edition of SEBA 2022 saw an overwhelming response, receiving nearly 200 applications from industry leaders who have made their mark in Langkawi, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, and Perak. Our Board of Advisors has selected 35 to claim the prestigious award at the grand gala event. These SMEs and entrepreneurs come from many industries, including F&B, Education, Hospitality, Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing, Information Technology, Digital Technology & Solutions, Healthcare, and more.

These SMEs and entrepreneurs play a significant role in our economy in servicing the consumers and contributing to our national GDP. Those who prevailed and adapted to the unforeseen situation most deserve to be applauded at SEBA 2022, which of course, is one of our primary objectives.

We aim to escalate these businesses by bringing them much much- needed recognition and publicity; in turn, we hope to motivate industry leaders within the Northern region to innovate, lead, and adopt creative solutions that will take Malaysia to the next level.

THE NORTHERN EDITION The previous six editions of SEBA have been hosted in Kuala Lumpur as a single comprehensive awards gala, presenting the best of the best winners and nominations from various business industries in Klang Valley.

SEBA begins to expand in 2022 with two different editions, Northern Edition and Southern Edition. The Northern edition will honour entrepreneurs from Kedah, Penang, Perlis, and Perak, while the Southern edition will honour entrepreneurs from Johor, Malacca, and Negeri Sembilan.

The rationale for expanding SEBA beyond Kuala Lumpur is that we believe many entrepreneurs have excelled but are underrecognised outside of their regions. SEBA’s platform aims to identify and showcase these talents and bring them to the next level, the national level.

SEBA strives to support the state government’s efforts t o foster creative entrepreneurship as part of the Penang economy’s development, following the Penang2030 vision. In the vision, the state government hopes to establish a platform that will connect entrepreneurs

looking for a break with enterprises in need of creative youth and novel solutions to contribute to the future ecosystem.

The Northern region is made up of states with a plethora of resources that allow them to create many high-quality entrepreneurs that are successful in their field. SEBA seeks to recognise and elevate these businesses prospering in that region that fosters creative industries and niche business services.

SEBA is an annual initiative organised by Yayasan Usahawan Malaysia that recognises and honours exemplary South East Asian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), firms, and entrepreneurs who are constantly developing and innovating to make society a better place.

SEBA aims to provide these entrepreneurs and businesses with the platform for recognition, networking, and continuous growth during and post-awards gala dinner. The award recognises exceptional companies that excel in their respective fields in business strategies, growth metrics, and best practises.

For the past six editions of SEBA, it has been held in Kuala Lumpur as one comprehensive

In 2021, Dr Ko branched out into retail, Dr KO Dermaceutical, selling Dr Ko Skin Specialist’s exclusively formulated skincare products in shopping malls in Gurney Plaza Penang and Sunway Carnival, Penang. Branches are set up in response to demand and for patients’ easier access. In a few years, it is estimated that 10 to 20 more Klinik Dr Ko and Dr Ko Dermaceutical will be set up to serve the people across the Northern region of Malaysia.

David ST Loh is an award-winning photojournalist and aerial landscape artist who has worked in the media for over 30 years, most of which was spent at the prestigious news organisation Reuters Ltd. He debuted as a photojournalist before joining Reuters’ award-winning global photos department as an editor before leaving in 2016. Kuala Lumpur, London, and Singapore have all hosted exhibitions of his work. He has been featured in numerous books and newspapers worldwide, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times, UK Times, and others. The 2016 China International Press Photo Competition included David on the jury.

For his clientele, David is known for creating iconic and compelling photographs. David and his wife, Rebecca Lee, launched Elaton Asia Services and Elaton Publishing after returning to Malaysia after more than 20 years in Singapore.

They released Over Penang in July 2019, which featured unique and famous aerial photographs from across Penang. The book became a best-seller after selling 2,000 copies in just four months. In the English category, the book won the Malaysia National Library Book Award 2020. Simply Penang, their second book, was released in October 2020 and highlighted the life of Penang through its population, festivals, arts and culture, and, of course, its food. Over Penang and Simply Penang are now widely regarded as the best pictorial books on contemporary Penang.

The company’s talent and production level for producing iconic images, exhibitions, and books were recognised overseas, having been invited to Myanmar and Western Australia tourism to deliver a similar project as Over Penang. David and Rebecca also run a successful fine art photo gallery in George Town, Penang, that house Ilford’s only second print gallery in the world. David has held several solo exhibitions in Malaysia and Singapore, including Langur: Building Bridge Between Our Worlds group show at Penang State Museum and Art Gallery, Malaysia.

Dato’ Sri Mohammed Shaheen Shah, a hotelier, has been an enthusiastic entrepreneur for more than a decade. Shaheen is now the Group Managing Director of RIYAZ Hotels & Resorts Sdn Bhd which manages hotels in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam and has business ventures in education, food & beverage, digital marketing, travel, tours, and development.
