Semarang , an Old Harbor Town with a multicultural history. In the 15th century, the envoy of the Chinese Emperor, Zheng He, or better known as Admiral Cheng Ho, set foot in Java.
From the 17th century onwards, Semarang became a trading center for spices, as well as a busy port for trade and passenger activity, when most of the journey was by sea. The city of Semarang, the capital city of Central Java, is located right in the middle of the fertile and densely populated northern coast of the island of Java.
Semarang’s strategic position has become a melting pot of Chinese, Indian, Arabic, and European cultures. When touring the Chinatown area and the Dutch trading district, you can see different cultural influences everywhere. On the older side of the city near the harbor called the Old Town, or Oudstadt, the rows of historic old buildings that were once Europe’s commercial district are also interesting to explore.

Semarang is the capital and largest city of Central Java province in Indonesia. It was a major port during the Dutch colonial era, and is still an important regional center and port today. The city has been named as the cleanest tourist destination in Southeast Asia by the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard (ACTCS) for 2020–2022.

Beauty, creativity, discoveries happen in many places and take many shapes, and in Padma Semarang has been directed to share with the community though experiences:
in NATURE. Semarang Botanical Experience will be a place to marvel at the diversity and splendor of the species present in their park and gardens.
in ART. Semarang Contemporary Art Garden, a collaboration between Xavier Loup and TONYRAKA art gallery will showcase 4 major masterpieces by 2 young contemporary Indonesian artists to the widest audience possible. And another collaboration between Xavier LOUP with Internationally recognized, French mix-media Artist, Yaz: a masterpiece of modern artwork collage displayed in the lagoon pool. A 3D artwork carved in almost 8 m long lava stone and patched with custom handmade 12,000 colorful resin pieces and a special ‘Blue Klein’ finishing paint representing “The World of PADMA” story, sharing the beauty of Indonesia archipelago’s nature where all PADMA hotels are located.

Ambang (threshold) literally means something that is in between empty space. Embang is a place that has been intentionally left vacant. So Ambang-Embang in this context has the meaning of a space that is intentionally left blank, it is a space not a place, neither here nor there and not an entity that can be simply pointed at, something that is always moving towards and not as an arrival. In the context of this artwork, visually the presence of form does not present a concrete form that can be pointed out, but an absurd form that is used as a bridge to understand the emptiness or absence.
The artist in this context is inspired by Balinese Hindu customs, culture or religion, in the sense that the concreteness of entrenched traditional ceremonies wrapped in a belief is essentially a way to believe in that emptiness or nothingness. By believing in the law of KARMA (the result of actions) with that means that we live and do not fully for the current space but we live in spaces of nothingness or empty spaces that we fully know that we build as a form of belief.
Similarly, the symbol of PADMA as a symbol of the holiness of God (nothingness) and the meaning of the essence of Padma is represented by flowers, and flowers are a means of prayer activities in faith. So Ambang-Embang can be analogized as a flower that aesthetically has a beautiful shape in a concrete space, and only the scent of flowers is able to deliver prayer in an empty space to embrace that nothingness, so it can be said that physical form (existence) is a bridge to understand essential non-physical or non-existent which we call belief.

This artwork was inspired by the shape of the stone arranged in such a way like a pagoda or Meru (a sacred building in Bali), in Semarang itself we can find a pagoda that stands majestically, namely the Avalokitesvara Buddhagaya Watugong Pagoda, which is about 12 km from the city center of Semarang, or about 9 km from Hotel Padma Semarang. The name Watugong apparently comes from a stone shaped like a gong. The stone is now placed in the Vihara. the origin of the Watugong turns out to have two versions. that is, from the perspective of the Javanese chronicle and the Buddhists
Based on the book Babad Tanah Jawa, Watugong was discovered by Sunan Kalijaga. “In this version Watugong was found when Sunan Kalijaga was on a journey to find soko guru (the pillar of the teacher).”
According to another version, the inventor was Goei Thwan Ling, a wealthy man. He was the owner of the land that now stands at Watugong Buddhist Temple. “Goei Thwan Ling is the inventor of the second version. Then the Watugong Vihara was built.
This is very interesting for me as a stimulant in creating this artwork. Besides that, we can also interact with this artwork, by entering at the bottom of the artwork there is a room with an infinity mirror and a hole that goes through to the top, where we can also see the sky from inside the statue and the light coming from above is expected to give a certain effect. So the audience is expected to feel a certain atmosphere when entering the artwork.
Archeology of the Soul is the excavation of the consciousness of the soul, the true Self. The soul here is described as a stacked stone, balanced, still and silent. Where in the Soul itself there is a space to recognize the Self. This artwork is expected to give an artistic, monumental, contrasting impression as well as blend with the surrounding environment, interactive, dynamic and also contemplative.

Love has an area of love, as a form of sacrifice, service, something that is unconditional (a liberating value). Meanwhile, logic is a reasoning skill and an attempt to establish measures to separate valid and invalid conclusions (true or incorrect). Love is driven by the heart which is essentially a form of sincerity, while logic is driven by a lump of flesh called the brain which relies on accuracy and precision of thinking.
If love is another name for a belief, while logic is a form of knowledge that will try and only be able to close us to a belief (belief in God), then only love/belief can embracing this nothingness (God).
In the context of this artwork, love and logic are seen as opposing fields but do not defeat or demean each other, they are a form of turmoil that will always be a battlefield in every individual who is in the process of seeking self-reliance autonomously. He is a form of inner conversation, namely a long conversation in which there are various negotiations to create a balance in life.

Teduh’s artwork is in the form of a cloud with strong supports, the vertical pillars of the cloud are the strength and values of spirituality and the shape of the cloud as something soft is a depiction of the soul. Drops of water like rain falling from the clouds are a blessing.
This artwork is not only a description of nature, but also the spiritual values that exist in humans, which continue to grow, change over time. Like rain water, from water vapor it becomes cloudy which then falls into rain and seeps into the soil giving fertility. This work is an awareness of a life process that continues to revolve.
