Xavier’s Mission Founded in 1847, Xavier High School is an academically rigorous, Catholic, Jesuit, college preparatory school in New York City that educates intelligent, motivated young men of diverse backgrounds and means. Xavier teaches students to take responsibility for their lives, to lead with integrity, to act justly in service of others, to pursue excellence in every endeavor and to deepen their relationship with God. Ultimately, Xavier forms young men who will go forth to transform the world for God’s greater glory.

Accreditations and Affiliations Xavier High School is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The school is chartered and registered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York. Xavier is a member of the Jesuit Schools Network, the National Association of Independent Schools, the National Catholic Education Association, and the Guild of Independent Schools of New York.

Unique Programs Ignatian Scholars Program This very selective program admits 15% of incoming freshmen on average each year. During freshman and sophomore year, Ignatian Scholars enroll in Honors English, History, and Science. They must maintain a GPA of 85 or higher to remain in the program.

Each Ignatian Scholar admitted into our freshman class receives some form of a merit scholarship upon his acceptance.

Christian Service Program Sophomores must complete 10 hours and juniors must complete 15 hours of service each year. Seniors complete 72 hours of service, devoting each Monday of their spring semester to a service placement of their choice.

TEACHING FACULTY

Advanced Placement Policy Students are pre-selected for AP classes based on a combination of prerequisites, including a minimum of 90 in the subject and teacher recommendations. In two subjects (English and Calculus), a placement exam is required. The maximum number of AP courses a student can take in a single academic year is three, unless otherwise approved by the Dean of Academics.

a communal experience of church as a center of reflection and prayer while working and being with those most in need, both domestically and internationally. Approximately 20% of students participate annually.

Retreats Retreats—voluntary in junior and senior year—play an important role during all four years of a Xavier student’s life. Through reflection, conversation, small group discussion, prayer, and other group and personal experiences, students come to better know themselves, the Xavier community, and God. More than 90% of the junior class elects to make a Kairos retreat, while 40% of seniors elect to participate in one or more of their optional retreat opportunities.

JROTC Twenty percent of students choose to participate in JROTC. Xavier’s JROTC Regiment has maintained the coveted Gold Star distinction for more than 30 years.
