XAVIER HAWKS FOOTBALL 1

FROM THE COACH To the Xavier Football Family: I am both excited and honored to be entering my 21st season as the head varsity football coach at Xavier High School. Our football program has consistently competed for Conference championships and playoff eligibility. We have made multiple trips to WIAA State Quarter & Semi-Finals. I have embraced the privilege of cultivating and sustaining a culture that embodies hard work, dedication, selflessness, competitiveness and integrity. My mission is to contribute to the positive character development of our players into their manhood. Nothing gives me greater joy than to see former players making a difference in the world as they move forward through life. Touching the Brad Williams Rock every time we walk onto Rocky Bleier Field is a constant reminder of what it means to represent Xavier Football and do everything right. We finish every practice and game with team prayer. The faith formation of our players is foundational and prayer is how we finish every day together. I would like to give a huge thanks to my assistant coaches, the JV1 and JV2 head coaches, the Xavier Booster Club, our administration, teachers, parents and supporters of the Xavier Hawks football program!

Go Hawks!

THANK YOU, MIKE AND KATHY BATES!

Dear Xavier FamilyAs we look out on the football field tonight, we can’t help but to think back to the vast tradition of success, starting with the championship teams of Rocky Bleier and continuing through the success of the 2020 campaign. Undoubtedly, scores of coaches, players and Xavier supporters have helped to blaze that path. Still, few can have had the profound and lasting impact of Mike and Kathy Bates. When you entered this evening, you came through the Rocky Bleier gate, a project and honor driven by Mike’s statistics and record keeping and Kathy’s vision for the facility and passion for tradition. The voice you hear this evening is Mike himself, volunteering his time and enthusiasm one more time. Somewhere in the crowd sits Kathy, energetically rooting for the Hawks, probably after having helped us to do any number of game day tasks. Mike and Kathy Bates love Xavier and exemplify both the alumni support and the enduring attitude of service that we are so proud to cultivate. Now imagine how many nights over the past 30 years have been occupied in a similar passion. Your student-athlete plays for four years. Kathy has directed every Xavier sport, added co-op teams for expanded opportunities for Xavier student athletes, attended just about every home game and lots of road games, and followed the Hawks on their journey to the state tournament in more than a dozen sports. During her time as athletic director, we have won more conference and state championships than I can list and the Xavier athletic tradition has cemented itself as one of the most outstanding in the area. She is also a recognized leader among her colleagues, having been elected to numerous councils, committees and leadership positions. Through all of these nights of games, Mike is at her side. He has been at Xavier for hours before the game begins; he knows how things are supposed to work and makes sure that everything goes according to plan. His communication with the media and the Xavier Nation make it possible for Hawks from far and wide to know what’s happening each time we take the field or court. Some people have hobbies, some take vacations, some make time to rest; Mike and Kathy have Xavier athletics. There is very little in your experience at a Xavier game that has not been shaped by their leadership and service. On behalf of the Xavier family, thank you to Mike and Kathy Bates for a lifetime of service. We look forward to many more years of Xavier games with them in the crowd. After all these years, it’s time to let us clean up after the game and turn off the lights after the last stragglers have left. We will gratefully build on the foundation that they have built and promise to follow their examples in both servant leadership and love for Xavier. Join me in congratulating Mike and Kathy Bates and thanking them for all that they mean to Xavier! Mike Mauthe Principal St. Francis Xavier High School

Kathy & Mike Bates retire, bid farewell to Xavier High School “We will truly miss the day-to-day interaction with the student-athletes, coaches, administrators, staff, Xavier families, the Xavier Booster Club as well as game officials, conference commissioners, other ADs across the state, media, and the WIAA personnel,” said Kathy Bates. “It has been a pleasure to work with so many great people for so many years. It was never a job, but was a wonderful journey at a place we truly love.” In the summer of 2021, Kathy and Mike Bates retired from Xavier High School after dedicating so many hours for so many years to Xavier Athletics.

the commitment to continue the successes of the athletic program, and he will embrace our coaches, athletes, and the Xavier family. “We wish for continued and improved success for the students, families, staff, colleagues and the entire Xavier community. Without a doubt, Xavier is a very unique place. We have so many great memories, and Xavier will always remain in our hearts,” added Kathy.

“My husband Mike and I will miss Xavier in the roles we have treasured. We now will be able to watch the sunset, and have dinner before Xavier games instead of afterwards. It’s time to say goodbye to our home away from home,” said Kathy, whose career at Xavier started 45 years ago. Mike coached at XHS for 28 years and volunteered with Xavier Athletics and the Xavier Booster Club for nearly 50 years.

She had been the athletic director at Xavier HS for 29 years. In 1976, she began a 17-year tenure as an English teacher at XHS before she became the AD in 1992. A long-time coach, she was the varsity girls’ volleyball head coach for 14 years, head girls’ track & field coach for 4 years, and assistant track & field coach for 29 years. Kathy coached many of those Xavier teams in State Tournament competition, with the WISAA and WIAA. She also was Dean of Students at the school for 25 years, starting in 1993.

“It’s been a special ride at a special place. Now is the time for the next generation to step up, and move into a great opportunity at a great school,” Kathy offered. “It’s time for Luke Herriges, the new Xavier athletic director, to take the reins. He is someone with the passion, energy, leadership and

Kathy also served the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association for 17 years as the District 4 rep for northeastern Wisconsin and was the Gender Rep for an additional 8 years where she served on the Sports Advisory Committee to the WIAA regarding prep sports in the state.

Welcome, Mr. Luke Herriges!

Please join me in celebrating our new athletic director, Mr. Luke Herriges. We have been blessed to have Coach Herriges lead our volleyball program for several years. During that time, I have always been inspired by his calm demeanor, the values that he emphasizes, and the way his program and his team represent Xavier with honor. While following in the footsteps of a legend is never easy (trust me, Luke, I know the feeling!), I am confident that Mr. Herriges will bring the same level of excellence to our athletic program as a whole. His dedication to developing coaches, supporting parents and encouraging student athletes will be a daily blessing to us.
