PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Xavier Family,
It is a wonderful time to be a part of the Xavier Catholic school system! This school year has been a tremendous success, with many notable accomplishments and improvements to our System. Exciting developments include a new Business Center, a mural, and new furniture in the Commons. We are very proud of our two state champions, ladies’ volleyball and cross country, and the usual inspiring performances in our theatre and music programs.
Our students also have many opportunities to learn and live their Catholic faith. The support of our eight Appleton parishes ensures weekly Masses and sacraments and multiple opportunities to provide service to the community.
As always, it’s inspiring to attend any Xavier event, whether theater, athletics, or a musical or band performance, and share in our students and our community’s tremendous energy and enthusiasm. Xavier Catholic Schools have a spirit that is unlike any other! I hope that as you read this edition of X, the Xavier magazine, you will feel the same pride in the success of our students and staff and be inspired by what the Xavier System is accomplishing now and our plans for a vibrant and exciting future. This edition of X, the Xavier magazine will highlight many of this year’s developments and share some of those plans.
It is truly a great time to be a Hawk!
Phil Riley President

The stories you are about to read in this magazine reflect our mission, a mission that would be impossible without the support of our community. To help keep our mission strong, please consider making a gift to the Xavier Fund at xaviercatholicschools.org/donate today!

With an open mind and a prayerful heart, Fr. Patrick Costello accepted his appointment as chaplain for Xavier High School beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. At the time, his experience with school aged children had been primarily at the elementary level. “I knew maybe a dozen high school students,” said Fr. Patrick. It didn’t take him long to find his place in the XHS community. In his first semester, he expanded the opportunities for students to have Mass at school by adding a Tuesday X-period Mass to the Friday morning Mass and the all school Masses. In collaboration with Ms. Wesolek in the theology department, Fr. Patrick organized a spring break pilgrimage to Rome for students, parents, alumni, and faculty. Finally, he added a “Fridays with the Freshmen” class portion. Each Friday, Fr. Patrick spends 45 minutes with each Freshman Theology class to develop prayer practices and ensure a solid Catholic foundation upon which the students can learn theology in the future. It is a common sight to see Fr. Patrick and his cohort of freshmen moving prayerfully between the classroom and the chapel to make the best of their time together.

One day, during his time with the freshmen, Fr. Patrick offered the famous quote by St. Augustine, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Noticing that most of the students were surprisingly unfamiliar with the words, he asked how many had heard it before. One student raised his hand. Fr. Patrick remembers feeling joy in that moment, knowing that he has the honor of sharing the deposit of faith and the wisdom of the Church with the next generation of Catholic leaders. He looks forward to his continued work with all of the young people, helping them to have a relationship with a priest and to grow in faith during these important high school years.

Xavier welcomes Fr. Patrick Costello, thanks him for his service to our students and community, and looks forward to his continued chaplaincy in the months ahead.

The St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System is extremely grateful to receive financial support from our eight Appleton parishes and 13 regional partner parishes.

Rocky Bleier ’64 returned to Appleton as a celebrity guest for the inaugural Wisconsin Veterans Village Golf Classic on September 22, which, coincidentally fell on the same weekend as Xavier’s 60th homecoming. Kim (Boeckers) Sowinski ’99 and Kip Zilisch ‘82 attended the golf classic events separately, but both had the idea to bring their Xavier alumni t-shirts and shared with us these photos. That Friday, Rocky generously took time out of his busy schedule to commentate and provide the coin toss at the Xavier versus Waupaca football game where the Hawks swept their opponent with a 49-7 victory!
Last summer, Beckie (Baumann) Hawker ’63 took the Hawk on a trip to Israel/Holy Land.

While visiting from Florida, Ted and Betty (Aykens) Wenning captured this alumni photo proudly repping the same Xavier Alumni t-shirt (and all from the class of 1970!) with friends, Bev (DeBruin) and Dan Besch

2010s
Matt Ferris ’14 and Meghan Goodman ’14 said “I do” on October 8. Their ceremony took place at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The celebration continued at Poplar Hall.

Claire Gear ’15 joined 13 other colleagues on a trip to Nairobi, Kenya through her employer, U.S. Venture. The purpose of the trip was to visit students and their families who attend the Victory Community Development Center (VICODEC), a Kenyan school which U.S. Venture and the U.S. Venture/Schmidt Family Foundation partner to support. According to Claire “Over half of Kenyan school-aged children do not complete their basic education due to a variety of poverty-driven obstacles.” Employees have the option to sponsor a child which covers the cost of a child’s tuition, medical expenses, uniforms, room and board, books, and clothing for one year. On this trip, Claire had the opportunity to meet the four students who she generously sponsors (one in high school and three in primary school): Sarah, Ryan, Joy and Albanus.
“My main takeaway from this experience was an understanding of how far our dollar can go through this program, and hearing firsthand how the sponsorship program is helping their community, “ Claire stated. “Not only was I interested in meeting my students and their families, but being integrated into a new community and culture is an opportunity to grow and expand your current outlook of the world.
I am extremely grateful to VICODEC and their community for being so welcoming and generous during our visit.” If you would like to learn more about how to sponsor a student, feel free to contact Clare at clgear@usventure.com.

On December 3, the alumni and admissions departments hosted an inaugural, Cookies with Claus event held in the Xavier Fine Arts Theatre lobby. This event offered Xavier alumni and their families a fun-filled morning of Christmas activities, including a photo with Santa!

Children gathered around a rug to listen to Christmas stories read by parent of alum, and 3rd grade instructional aide, Mrs. Tina Foth. With assistance from their parents, they searched the lobby area to check off “I Spy” Christmas images from a list with the great prize of a candy cane for finding all the items. Families had the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake, a reindeer thumbprint ornament, to place on their tree at home. There was no shortage of sugar at the cookie decorating station where kids could ice a Christmas tree cut-out and then decorate with candy ornaments (although most made it into mouths before actually going on the tree). To avoid waiting in line, each family pre-registered for a specific time slot to meet with Santa and then have a professional photo captured by the talented Gosia’s Photography.
Alumni, if you were unable to attend in 2022, plan to join this December! The date and signups will be provided in our monthly alumni newsletter email as soon as it is determined. This event is perfect for alumni with a young child(ren), or, alumni with young grandchildren.
A very special ‘thank you’ to Tina Foth, Gosia Fuehrer, President Phil Riley, Jim Romenesko H’18, Mike Diedrich, and Mike Mauthe for helping to make this a special morning.

We are excited to announce the winner of the 2021-2022 Xavier Alumni Class Challenge is the class of 1973 with 15.7% participation!

Throughout the year, any Xavier alum who makes a gift to the school is included in the overall participation percentages of the Xavier Alumni Class Challenge. If any of our 315 married alumni couples (yes, 630 alumni are high school sweethearts!) make a donation, their gift is credited to each of them individually. This past year, 6.68% of our alumni raised a combined total of $247,438! We are blessed by the generosity of our Xavier alumni benefactors who invest in our current and next generation Xavier graduates.
Curious where your class ranked at the end of this challenge? Visit the Alumni Giving page on our website at xaviercatholicschools.org/alumni/ alumni-giving
Congratulations, class of 1973 and thank you to all alumni who support Xavier Catholic Schools!

The 2022-2023 Xavier Alumni Class Challenge runs through June 30, 2023. Is your class currently in the top 10 based on donor participation?

You are reading that correctly, the above number is not a typo! In February, Celebrate, Xavier Catholic Schools’ largest fundraising event raised a record $635,000. We are so incredibly grateful for everyone's generosity throughout the entire event. There are countless amazing individuals to thank. While we cannot name everyone, please know how truly grateful we are for all of your support. We would like to thank our 45 sponsors who helped make the evening possible. Additionally, we were blessed with two families who provided $150,000 in matching gift dollars for the Fund Our Future portion of the evening. Their remarkable generosity, along with Fund our Future donors, raised $335,950 in a very inspiring 20 minutes! Lastly, Celebrate 2023 was made possible by the unfaltering dedication of our entire Celebrate planning committee. They are not only the idea people, but their hard work and dedication make the night beautiful, inspirational, and successful. We absolutely could not achieve these astounding results without everyone who supports Celebrate with their time, talent, and treasure. We are grateful beyond words. Want to be a part of next year’s Celebrate-ion? Mark the date and join us on February 3, 2024

Thank you 2023 Celebrate Sponsors!

Let’s face facts…almost no one becomes a professional athlete. We know this. We also know that participating in high-level college athletics is a similarly exclusive club, but, for those who love sports, there’s a way to have a major college athletic experience, be part of a team and actually play games without actually being on the official roster. How is that you ask? By being a student manager, and that is exactly how four recent Xavier graduates are making their college experience at Wisconsin extra special.

X, the Xavier magazine recently caught up with Wisconsin student managers Johnny Horak ‘20, Max Metropulos ‘19 (football) and Theo Douglas ‘20, and Quinn Zubella ‘19 (basketball) to learn a bit more about this select group.

Johnny and Max are both considered on-field managers with Johnny assigned to the offensive line and Max to the tight end positon group. An average day at work can add up to over six hours and includes hauling equipment, attending meetings, perhaps catching passes from quarterbacks, spotting the football, and jumping in when called upon. This year Max was awarded the “Otis Green” Manager Award, presented annually to the studentmanager whose leadership, dedication, and work ethic led to the success of the football program.
On the hardwood, Theo and Quinn are given a variety of assignments on game day ranging from being on the bench to working the officials’ locker room. Possessing basketball skills is an important part of their positions because at practice managers are not only required to help with set-up and chart workouts but they are regularly required to participate in drills in some capacity. Because of this, the selection process for getting a job requires not only a series of interviews but an on court skill evaluation.
Each of the students are quick to point out the influence their Xavier experience had on them acquiring the position, especially their involvement in athletics. Being a Xavier student-athlete requires you to be flexible, a team player, have discipline, and be coachable. It demands that you are accountable, competitive and have great time-management skills. All of these are the same qualities that are needed on a daily basis in their student manager position. But perhaps the biggest influence has been the involvement of the Xavier community.
Xavier graduates Jeremy Davis ‘09 (Wisconsin), Adam Bates ’09 (Minnesota) and Noah Severin ‘16 (Wisconsin) all had roles as Student Managers. They were, along with former Xavier graduate Pat Gill ‘95 and the Gill family, very helpful in recommending the current group for these sought- after positions. Jeremy, a longtime Xavier basketball assistant, regularly shared his experiences with Theo and Quinn and helped inspire their passion by telling of his Final Four experiences, beating Kentucky, and playing for a National Championship. Likewise, Noah is quick to point out "Being a manager was one of the best experiences I had while at the University of Wisconsin. It taught me the importance of communication, how to be an effective leader, and to work hard without expecting to receive recognition in return."
In addition, their love for sports along with the relationship they have built with individual players and co-workers have made their jobs more meaningful. Not to mention the great travel opportunities, the incredible swag, and of course training table meals.

And then, of course, there are the games. Yes, student-managers actually have the opportunity to compete on the court and on the field. Each year the Wisconsin football managers play their Iowa counterparts in a flag football game called the “Rusty Tool Box Game.” On the hardwood, the basketball staffs compete on a regular basis with records being kept throughout the year and the best four teams actually play a final four in their own version of March Madness.

What is truly amazing and a source of pride is that Xavier High school has four students currently employed as student managers at the University of Wisconsin. Next time you are watching a Badger football or basketball game, look behind the scenes and see the community of people who help make college athletics operate so efficiently.

"Being a manager was one of the best experiences I had while at the University of Wisconsin. It taught me the importance of communication, how to be an effective leader, and to work hard without expecting to receive recognition in return."
— Noah Severin, manager for Wisconsin Men's Basketball team from 2016-2020

Mady Doering ’23 signed a letter of intent to play golf at Concordia University- Wisconsin.

Kenny Power ’23 signed a letter of intent to run cross country for Fairfield University in Connecticut.

Alayna McKinnon ‘24 received the EAA Ray Aviation Scholarship in the amount of $11,000. Applicants must be 16 years or older and, if awarded, the scholarship covers the cost to earn a private pilot’s license. Alayna will start classes soon and will get her license in about a year. In the future, she plans to attend college to obtain a commercial pilot license.

Several students recently earned the honor of Eagle Scout. Congratulations to Luke LaViolette ’26, Logan LaViolette ’26, Austin Faeth ‘24, Joel Pfaff ‘24, David Wagener ‘24, and Noah Donnermeyer ’24.

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veteran’s Day has been celebrated in America since the years following World War I. Since then, Veteran’s Day has come to encompass the remembrance and celebration of the bravery of the many servicemen and women who have fought for our country. Each soldier has a story to tell, which provides a more holistic view of the wars. On Wednesday, November 9th, Xavier Middle School students had the opportunity to learn firsthand from those who valiantly served our country. The day began in the auditorium where sixteen Veterans representing different branches of the military and different wars were introduced. Under direction from Mr. Jeremiah Eis, students folded the flag and explained the symbolism of each fold before the songs of each branch were played. Afterward, the 7th graders were dismissed to the cafeteria. A week prior they had been instructed in Miss Hensley’s Social Studies class that they would be interviewing war veterans, and they spent a class period devising open-ended questions to spark conversation. In small groups, the 7th graders met with their first veteran interviewee. The class had the opportunity to speak with three veterans with varying experiences before time was called. According to emails and notes received from the veterans, the 7th-grade class as a whole was respectful and diligent and it was a positive experience for the visitors. The 7th graders returned to class recounting tales from their veterans. For the rest of the day, students created thank you and Christmas cards for the veterans and created poppy crafts, representing Veterans day and WWI, which hang in the middle school hallway. This Xavier Veteran’s Day celebration was an excellent opportunity to connect our students with the community and show them firsthand why we celebrate those who bravely fought for our rights and freedoms.

It has become a tradition at Xavier Middle School to celebrate the patron saint, St. Francis Xavier, in a big way. December 2nd, 2022 was a day dedicated to prayer, service, learning and celebrating community.

The morning began with a meditation prayer and presentation by Deacon Lincoln Wood, pastoral leader at St. Thomas More Parish. Deacon Lincoln shared a message of being chosen and used the life of St. Francis Xavier as a vivid example.
Fr. Adam Bradley, Associate Vocations Director for the Diocese of Green Bay joined us as we celebrated a votive mass for St. Francis Xavier. The students engaged in worship and listened to Fr. Adam remind us to ask for help - from saints, from Mary, from each other, from God.
The remainder of the day included service and fun.
Over 200 - 7th and 8th grade students left the building to perform service at parishes, Xavier Elementary Schools and local organizations. Four busses transported students and staff to 14 different sites. The students cleaned, decorated, helped with mailings, sang Christmas carols, read stories, led activities and performed a whole variety of service opportunities. Our gratitude to all the staff and volunteers who hosted us.
The fifth grade students cleaned our own school! They worked in the gym, the LMC and throughout the halls to make our school sparkling and bright! While they worked hard, they also laughed and joked and sang some songs. The work was coordinated by Mr. Stebane, Mrs. Hyde and Mr. Linsmeier. Thank you! Additionally, the students created Christmas messages to be delivered to people in some area community homes.
Sixth grade students used measuring and cutting skills along with their creativity to prepare fleece blankets for residents at Harbor House. Over 40 blankets were donated, along with Christmas wishes.

A schoolwide Kahoot! game engaged the students in demonstrating their knowledge of St. Francis Xavier, his mission, Xavier Middle School and our mission. Winning students and teacher, Mrs. Kroner, were awarded casual day passes for their efforts. The auditorium was filled with laughter and learning! The day concluded with students reflecting, discussing and praying in KIDS.
Thank you to our Xavier Middle School staff and students for energetically participating in this day. What a blessing to be a part of St. Francis Xavier Middle School!

My children started in the Xavier system as preschoolers. Almost since day one, my husband and I were fans of the whole child education our sons were receiving. Though it is many years ago now (and yes, it has flown by), I can still remember my very first “favorite moment” (yes, there have been many). Admittedly, I almost spoiled it. School had recently started and I was walking by our young son’s bedroom. It was oddly quiet as he was intently trying to break into his piggy bank. My first reaction was to scold him as he knew that was for saving money, not taking money out. Fortunately I asked what he was doing before I scolded. He told me he needed money and needed it for school tomorrow. Confused as to why he would need money, I asked why. He said he needed to help others. He explained to me that his teacher had told them that God wants us to share and help others if we are able. The teacher had explained many ways to help and explained that they had their first “Casual for a Cause” day the next day. He wanted to share his money with other people who needed it more. (Yes, there may have been a few happy and proud tears that slid down my face when he wasn’t looking.)
Admittedly, the piggy bank was hard to get into and it crossed my mind to just grab a dollar out of my purse. That thought was quickly followed by the realization that that wouldn’t mean nearly as much to him. That realization was reinforced the next morning when he beamed walking into school with the coins from his piggy bank securely gripped in a baggie. He understood at that young age what it meant to give to others and how important that was. Over the years, this scene has undoubtedly been repeated in many Xavier homes. Deals were made, chores were done to earn money to give to others, sometimes
the Casual for a Cause day was forgotten until pulling into the parking lot that morning and money was begged for and promised to be paid back. Honestly, it didn’t really matter much to me if it was paid back—the point was my children were learning the importance of giving to others. Thankfully, it is a practice they continue to this day. Learning begins at home, but this is yet another lesson that was reinforced in the halls of Xavier schools thanks to “Casual for a Cause” days and various other opportunities since.

“Casual for a Cause” days occur regularly on the Xavier elementary campuses. Students are offered the opportunity to bring a dollar (or more) or a specific type of item to donate to a cause each month or so (sometimes other service projects take precedence). The causes change each month and any student or staff member can suggest a cause for consideration that they feel strongly about. Often the causes supported are local, but there are also elements of global outreach. Causes helped this year have included Pillars, St. Joseph Food Program, the Children’s Tumor Foundation, Adopt a Family, Coats for Kids, the Community Clothes Closet, and Convoy of Hope, among others.
Students learn valuable lessons—about sharing, giving, earning, sacrificing, caring, and more. Many times, they also learn about various causes that can become near and dear to their hearts. I remain thankful for so many of the “favorite moments” our family has experienced because of Xavier, but this one is not only a favorite memory, but is also a favorite “habit” for our family that means a little more now.
As children of God, we are called to be people of love. We become people of love when we live by Jesus’ Fruits of the Spirit. This beautiful concept teaches us all to live this way of faith. This concept and living by it can be difficult to put into practice for anyone, regardless of age. To make it easier for elementary students to understand, Mrs. Fairweather, principal and Mrs. Radloff, school counselor, developed the “Heart of a Hawk” program at the St. Francis Xavier Elementary Marquette St. Campus.
The program was created to incorporate religion and character building in a fun and more easily understandable format for elementary-aged students. It has been extremely well received by students and families alike.

Each month, the campus focuses on a different Fruit of the Spirit including self-control, generosity, kindness, faithfulness, and peace, among others. Examples are given to the students and once everyone understands the month’s focus, teachers and staff encourage students to live out that Fruit of the Spirit. Each homeroom teacher nominates one student to receive the “Heart of a Hawk” recognition for that month. Students who are recognized receive a certificate and they also get the opportunity to use the new rock wall.
A Xavier education is more than academics. It is about teaching the whole child. The Heart of a Hawk program builds character while incorporating faith, to help all our students grow as children of God.

The Color Run is an event our elementary students and their families look forward to each fall. Planned by the Xavier Elementary Home and School Association (HSA), this year’s event raised $27,161! Funds raised along with dues paid by individual families provide the HSA opportunities to host family events throughout the year and support elementary faculty and staff with conference and in-service meals, birthday and appreciation gifts, treats on holidays, and more!
Xavier Catholic Schools would like to especially thank the co-chairs of this year’s event- Crystal Kirchner and Stephanie Barnes, and the entire Color Run committee for your amazing work and dedication to make this such a wonderful event for our students and families!

Inspiring Service Through Sweetness
Inspiring Service Through Sweetness
By: Jennifer MuchEach week, the sweet aroma of chocolate and brown sugar lingers around the kitchen where Matt Reynebeau can be found faithfully mixing up countless batches of his iconic chocolate chip cookies. The fresh baked goods are lined up on racks, cooling off and waiting to be packaged as another round is beginning to rise in the oven.
These irresistible delights have been a cherished staple to the Xavier community for years; and while their popularity was accidental, they have given renowned acclivity to an easily recognizable brand, Mr. Reynebeau’s Cookies.
A Sweet Beginning
Before shifting his focus from education to confections, Reynebeau taught mathematics at Xavier for 12 years. He then dedicated 25 years to serving as the high school principal. Upon retiring at 59, Reynebeau leveled on spontaneity before being inspired to start a business. “When I decided to retire from Xavier, I really did not have any plans,” Reynebeau said, “some people wondered if I was going to make cookies; it gave me the idea of starting a cookie business."
Aprons ready, Reynebeau, along with his long-time administrative assistant, Ellen Amick ‘69, began working together once again in 2014, this time to create homemade treats. "When we make a batch, it makes about 160 cookies," said Reynebeau, "the number of batches varies a lot during the year." Cookie varieties include Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Mint Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Raisin Walnut.
Along with single packages and bags of mini cookies, Reynebeau and Amick create cookie cakes. "Ellen does a professional job of decorating them," complimented Reynebeau, "people order these with get well wishes, to say thanks, to say happy birthday or congratulations." Gift boxes are also available for purchase and orders can be shipped country-wide.
Recipe for Success
Looking back, before Reynebeau's endeavor could hit the ovens, he needed a place to bake first. "I was looking for a kitchen to rent and after looking at a number of sites, I decided to rent the kitchen at the former Catholic Central Elementary school," said Reynebeau. At the time of his
retirement, Xavier was closing Catholic Central and it became the Community Early Learning Center (CELC).
After an elevator was installed for easier accessibility to the building's basement kitchen, the former school became the perfect, nostalgic spot. "It all worked out well and seemed like it was meant to be," said Reynebeau. After moving in his big mixer from St. Bernadette, it was cookie time!
The kitchen gave Reynebeau optimal space for whipping up large batches and plenty of room to package, and even more, it smells heavenly. As he bakes, he has a thoughtfully coordinated system. Between pulling out hot trays to handsealing cellophane packages and labeling, it's clear that Reynebeau's business is a labor of both faith and love. While his recipe itself is nearly sacred, Reynebeau was willing to share his secret to the perfect cookie: lots of chocolate chips! "I joke that there is just enough dough to keep the chocolate chips together," laughed Reynebeau.
A Faithful Tradition
For years, Reynebeau had been sharing his passion for baking with the Xavier community.

"Along the way, Donna Fahrenkrug, the assistant principal for many of those years, suggested that I make cookies and serve them warm to students and thank them for choosing to attend a Catholic school in the Fox Valley," said Reynebeau, "we did this for about 15-20 years while I was at Xavier."
The tradition quickly became a special part of Catholic Schools Week and one that Reynebeau especially enjoys. "I have continued this tradition at all these schools with our business," he said, "the students and teachers look forward to this each year and it is fun to do." Sans delectable crumbs and all, over 3,200 cookies were distributed among the schools this year.
Reynebeau also has many wonderful memories sharing his creation, including from the renowned Xavier Food Fair. He quickly learned, after baking and selling 4,500 cookies, that his desserts could fundraise and stir up some sweet competition.
"One year, someone wanted to support the auction in a big way and bid $5,000 for the cookies," Reynebeau recalled. The following year, two teams of parents bid against each other for the cookies and the winning batch raised $11,111. Now, as any true Xavier grad would tell you, those cookies are worth every cent!
Cherishing Connections
Through his journey of opening his business, Reynebeau offers the community more than just cookies. Instead, he provides a welcoming opportunity for connection and fellowship.

"I really appreciate meeting people at the Farmer’s Market, whether they are familiar friends or new acquaintances," said Reynebeau. Outgoing and personable, anyone walking up to the Reynebeau Cookie booth is greeted warmly and with a smile. Along with showcasing his products, Reynebeau enjoys reconnecting with former students and their families.
“I get to hear their stories and learn about their present circumstances regarding their growing families and jobs," said Reynebeau, "I especially like to see and catch up with alumni and past parents who stop to buy cookies."
Those fixing for Mr. Reynebeau's Cookies have some options. "Besides being busy during the summer making cookies for the farm market, we sell our cookies at a number of stores in the Valley," said Reynebeau.

Customers can find them at Jacobs Meat Market, Dwyer's
Cheese Hut, Lamers Dairy and Jersey Bagel in Appleton, as well as at The Meat Block in Greenville. They are also sold year-round at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) and at the concessions stand during Xavier's athletic and fine arts events.
Baking Up Blessings
For Reynebeau, baking cookies turned out to be more than just a business, it was a blessing, too. "With all the previous cookie sales at Xavier events, I accidently built a brand," said Reynebeau, "a brand which I also want to protect." Naturally, the cookies sell themselves thanks to both their chunky bite and prominent moniker. "Because my cookies were pretty well known within the Xavier community, when I started my business, I felt I had to call it "Mr. Reynebeau's Cookies" so people knew what they were getting," said Reynebeau.
Faith, coupled with his time and talent, also played an important role for Reynebeau. "We donate gift baskets of cookies to parish fundraising events or causes that we feel a special connection to," said Reynebeau. This extension of charity and hospitality makes Mr. Reynebeau's Cookies even more special.
"I plan to continue to work part-time making cookies," said Reynebeau, "I am happy to take the business that comes to me." From special occasions like birthdays, baby showers and weddings, to enjoying a simple dessert after dinner, Mr. Reynebeau's Cookies are truly the best. When it comes down to every sweet morsel, a happy Catholic is a Catholic with a cookie!

DONOR IMPACT REPORT 2021-2022

As I write this annual report letter, I am struck by all that we achieved during the 2021-2022 school year. These accomplishments are not ours alone and we thank all of you who have contributed to our success. Each gift we have received is an outward sign of the sustained relationship individual donors have with Xavier and a shared commitment to the values deeply rooted within the Xavier culture. It is a powerful reminder that Xavier isn’t just a place, or a faculty, or a student body. It is a mission: A mission that has momentum of its own, powered by passion, driven by curiosity, and committed to excellence. A mission that is too vital, our progress too essential, to slow down or look back. A mission that seeks true partnerships with individuals, families, businesses, and our community.

As true Hawks, we have soared through turbulent winds of the past two years thanks to your generosity, love and prayers. Your willingness to share has provided the gift of opportunity to students and supported our most critical resource – our Xavier teachers and staff who are forever committed to providing the highest quality teaching and learning. They have helped students grow closer to God, opened the door for creative expression, and ensured enrichment after the bell.
While we relish our success, I am totally confident that our best days are still ahead of us and with your continued support Xavier will build upon our rich traditions and move forward with purpose. I ask for your continued generosity in building both our todays and our tomorrows.

Live Jesus in our Hearts,

Xavier Board of Trustees 2021-2022

DONOR IMPACT REPORT 2021-2022
Dear Xavier community,
The mission of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation is to support the promise of a Catholic education through the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System. It is the goal of the Foundation to provide a dependable source of funds to help meet the greatest financial needs of the System and the students it serves through faith formation, academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and a supportive community. The Foundation also exists to help support the amazing Xavier educators and staff who give so faithfully of themselves for our students, and to ensure that academic resources and facilities remain a source of tremendous pride.

The Foundation is pleased to once again honor all who have given of themselves to support Xavier through lifetime and legacy gifts. As a result of your generosity, the Foundation contributed over $553,380 to the Xavier Catholic School System during the 2021 - 2022 fiscal year, serving as a necessary additional source of revenue for the System. During that time, the Foundation received gifts totaling $460,263, and ended the year with assets of over $8 million. We celebrate your sacrifice and support, and share the gratitude of the entire Xavier community for your kindness.
As the need for Christ-centered education grows, so do our aspirations for the Foundation. We must continue to make a Xavier education accessible for all who are called. We must attract and retain talented and dedicated educators who are passionate about both knowledge and faith formation for our students. And we must maintain our elementary, middle school and high school campuses as worthy destinations for our community’s finest students. Please consider joining those who have given. Let us help you share thoughts about how your own gifts may have the greatest impact on continuing the Xavier legacy.
Sincerely,
Bob Ellis St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation PresidentFoundation Board of Directors 2021-2022

A legacy gift is one of the most personalized gifts you can make. The following members of the Xavier Legacy Circle have thoughtfully included Xavier Catholic Schools in their estate plans. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to ensure opportunities for future generations of students to carry on the Xavier legacy of excellence.

In the sixty-three year history of Xavier High School, icons and legends sprinkle the landscape of time. When it comes time to bid farewell and thank them for their service, words can seldom do justice to the legacy they leave, but it’s important to try.

As many of you know, Mr. Steve Hurula has been courageously battling cancer for nearly two years. What you may not know is that Steve has spent almost thirty years serving the students of Xavier, largely as the teacher of senior theology classes. It has been Steve’s calling to prepare students for taking their faith into college. Beyond his classes, Steve served tirelessly as a coach for several programs and was active in so many more things. As his condition progressed, Steve fought like crazy to get himself back here to teach our seniors this year. His courage and faith were far bigger lessons than anything we could provide in a textbook. This is a man who bleeds Xavier blue and his laugh and his enthusiasm are undoubtedly a part of the memory of any Xavier alumnus of the past three decades.

Last year I had the chance to meet Steve’s sister and she relayed this story. When Steve received his diagnosis, the doctors told him that he probably had a few years left. He called his sister to tell her the difficult news. Trying to make the best of a terrible moment, she asked him, “OK, well, what do you want to do with your time? Travel? Move someplace warm? What’s on your bucket list?” She said Steve only chuckled and responded in a way that made
her think the question was completely ridiculous. “I want to teach” he said, “I love what I do and love where I am. I am going to keep doing it for as long as God allows.” There is nothing I can say to follow that up. That is how much Steve Hurula loves Xavier and loves to serve students and families. That’s who he is. There is no effective means to entirely show our gratitude so I am hoping that all of our prayers for him will be a small token of our gratitude.
On February 24th, 2023, Mr. Hurula passed away and gained eternal rest. In Steve’s farewell e-mail to the students in December, he wrote “Take nothing for granted. Say thank you a lot.” I am sorry that perhaps we have taken the legend that is Mr. Hurula for granted. Xavier is better off because of his dedication, his faith and courage in the face of suffering, and the dignity and grace with which he has persevered during these last few years. He does things the Xavier Way. Thank you, Steve Hurula, for a lifetime of service and an impact on thousands of young people and hundreds of colleagues. You are a blessing to all of us.
Byline: Mike Mauthe XHS Principal

Spring break 2023 saw the first ever Xavier High School pilgrimage to Rome. The idea was initiated by school chaplain, Fr. Patrick Costello, who studied in Rome for four years prior to ordination. Theology teacher, Ms. Katie Wesolek, helped plan and coordinate the trip. There were thirteen attendees in all, including six students: Evan Mayer ‘23, Noah Vanden Wymelenberg ‘24, Ella Brandon ‘24, Lily McHugh ‘25, Maksym Hietpas ‘26 and Jackson Wurth ‘26. Two parents who are also Xavier alumni joined the pilgrims: Ann (Kampf) Vanden Wymelenberg ’85 and Andrea (Geitner) McHugh ‘98. A recent graduate, Athena Brandon ‘21 also took part in the trip. Finally, theology teacher Ann McKnight and her husband, Steve McKnight, rounded out the group.
The pilgrims stayed at a religious guest house just outside of St. Peter’s Square. The centerpiece of the pilgrimage was rising early each morning to walk to the station church Mass of the day, an ancient Lenten tradition in the city of Rome. The group also toured the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, the Catacombs of St. Callistus, and the four major Basilicas in Rome. There were numerous other spiritual experiences such as climbing the holy stairs and venerating various relics of the passion of Jesus. The group attended the Sunday Angelus and the Wednesday Audience with Pope Francis, with students being within twenty feet of him when the pope-mobile passed by their section. A day trip to Assisi allowed the pilgrims to experience the peace and simplicity of life of St. Francis and St. Clare.
It was an incredible opportunity to visit Rome and one that is hoped to become an annual tradition!
"My love for the saints and martyrs of our church grew through visiting their churches and burial sites. We as Catholics pray and always ask for the saint's intercessions, so it was cool to visit their tombs and meet them for the first time."
— Noah Vanden Wymelenberg ‘24
"Being among the saints and walking the same paths they did gave me a special sense of connection between me and them and helped me understand what being Catholic is all about."
— Jackson Wurth‘26

"The pilgrimage was life-changing. Visiting the sites in Rome that I have heard about my entire life, put everything into perspective for me. My faith is stronger for it."

Ann (Kampf) Vanden Wymelenberg ‘85
