Dear Friends of Xavier Catholic Schools,
It is my pleasure to once again greet you and invite you to enjoy another edition of X Magazine. As you read through the articles, we hope you will be inspired by the magnificent things our students are achieving across all our campuses. Our hallmark at Xavier Catholic Schools is the strong sense of community and our students' willingness to be of service. There are achievements across our entire system, including our athletic teams, who had a banner year in the fall, capturing all seven boys' and girls' conference championships and two more state championships for our ladies' volleyball and cross country teams. Our theater programs also continue to impress, with this year's production of The Wizard of Oz highlighting the musical and theatrical talents of our high school and even some middle and elementary school students who joined the cast. Our high school students and our staff participated in the Ethel Moehring Help Your Neighbor Day tradition and spread out across the valley to provide assistance to individuals in need as well as visiting parishes.
In this edition, you will also see the debut of the Xavier Catholic School System's long-range annual strategic plan. This project has been in the works for a number of years, and through the combined efforts of our system leadership team, our board of trustees, and pastors, we have charted a course that will set Xavier on a path for long-term success and sustainability. We hope that what you see will allow you to share our vision of a highly successful system. Great things are happening here, and we are excited about the future, both in the short-term and long-term.
In closing, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who supports our system and feels great pride in all the good that is happening here. There are many opportunities for you to begin or continue supporting Xavier Catholic Schools, and we hope that the good work and the accomplishments you see in this magazine will inspire you to help us continue to provide the very best Catholic education for all children across our system and support our Catholic faith and community in the Fox Valley.
Live Jesus in Our Hearts!

On August 25, Xavier alumni, family, and friends attended the first annual Jeremy Janssen Memorial Golf Outing held at Grand View Golf Club in Hortonville. Proceeds from the event went to support the Jeremy Janssen Memorial Fund. It was an amazing day filled with great friendships and great memories of Jeremy, who passed away in 2019. Special thanks to the Janssen family and the class of 1999 for organizing the event. Stay tuned for plans for next year's event.
Michael Reader ‘13 and Maggie (Wallace) Reader ‘13 have been soaking up every minute with their son, Luca. He is always giggling and smiling and loves to be cuddled. He is happiest when he’s outside on a walk or taking in the beautiful sights of nature. His legs are constantly kicking especially when he’s listening to music; he will “Irish dance” to anything you put on! When you sing to him, he gives a contagious smile and his face lights up. He is such a sweet little boy and the perfect addition to the Reader family.
Mike Pankratz ‘69, has published six books he’s written in retirement. The books are available in eBook or quality paperback. Bridgeport tells a tale of life in speakeasyera Chicago. Back to Reno will make you laugh as some young students display how NOT to go through college. Other books will take you from Door County, Wisconsin to Florida, the Pacific Coast north of San Francisco, and other American Settings.

My wife, Barb Feavel ‘65 and I (Doug Feavel ‘65) recently celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary. We are graduates of Xavier’s class of 1965. We met during our senior year in high school and married during our senior year in college. I attended St. Mary’s grade school for eight years and Barb attended St. Theresa for eight years, in whose church we were wed in 1968. Career moves led us away from Appleton shortly after I returned from National Guard basic training in 1971. In our retirement, we live in Vincennes, Indiana, near one of our two children and two of our four grandchildren. We recognize that our excellent Catholic school education is a major contributing factor to the various successes in our life, including an enduring and happy marriage. We are in good health and very active, so we’re looking forward to still more anniversaries to come.
Jim Sensenbrenner ‘65, finished his fourth book, Outdoor Legends. It features epic stories about the greatest hunters and outdoorsmen and women of all time. Take a journey through time starting more than 6,000 years ago with orion hunting varmints in the villages of Greece; Davy Crocket hunting bear in Tennessee before he defended the Alamo; Ernest Hemingway almost dying in two plane crashes in the middle of Africa; and ending with Chuck Adams, the greatest living Pop and Young record holder. It’s available from select retail outlets and Amazon.com. Signed books are available by contacting Jim at jbsenen@gmail.com.

“How is seminary going?” I often hear this question when I am home on break, or I encounter someone I have not seen for some time. I have a variety of different answers including, “pretty good,” “good but tiring,” “it can be challenging at times,” etc. Those responses could just as easily answer the question, “How was your day at work?” Yet, here is my honest answer— you would not believe me if I told you.
I am not trying to make a claim about anyone’s ability to empathize with my experience or believe in the supernatural. Quite frankly, I have trouble believing it myself sometimes because the power of the Gospel is simply astounding. It transforms the way you experience the world.
I graduated from Xavier in 2016 and found myself well prepared to study and play football at St. Norbert College. By senior year, I had everything that the world told me I should want and everything that I thought I wanted. I had great friends, numerous job offers, a new car, and I was going out with a girl that I liked. While the priesthood had once been on my heart, it had long since passed. One evening in adoration, however, God put four words on my heart, “This Is My Body.” As a good Catholic school boy, I knew the Eucharist was Jesus, but I had not seriously reflected on responding to Christ’s gift by offering my own life on the altar with Him. In that instant, every thought I ever had about becoming a priest came rushing back.
My response was a four-letter word, and it was not “amen.” I was ticked. Why would God call me to be a priest when things were so good, when I had it all figured out?
Looking back now, I realize God gave me a great gift. He gave me everything I thought I wanted and told me I was free to have it. But deep down, there was a recognition that He was calling me to something more. And that choice had to be totally free.
In my first year of seminary formation, I found myself stripped from all technology, living in a new community, learning how to pray, and discovering the meaning of my identity as a son of God. In the grand scheme of things, I gave God a small “yes”, but then He used it. I watched God heal people and even more importantly heal hearts, including my own. I saw people overcome by the Holy Spirit and freed from spiritual bondage. I received provisions from God firsthand, walking hundreds of miles on pilgrimage begging for food and places to stay. I was first asked by Bishop Ricken to move to Milwaukee, and soon after, to Rome. Since moving to Rome, God has continued to surprise me, challenge me, and teach me the meaning of life. Despite all the excitement, most of my life looks like I am sitting in a church doing nothing. Yet, in that silent prayer God speaks, He heals, and He invites us closer.
Some might say, “good for you, I’m glad you are discovering yourself,” but honestly it is the exact opposite. I am discovering a person—a person who seemingly died a horrific death on a cross, but simultaneously conquered sin and death. Looking at the cross, it might be hard to believe that Jesus is the victor, but I assure you He was on a mission, and He invites others like me and you to participate in that mission. Through Him, our entire vision of the world changes as he transforms the deepest sufferings of our hearts. It has not been easy, and He never said it would be. But He did promise to be there with us, and He is always faithful to His promises.
Nick has been in seminary for three years and will be in Rome for the next four years. Following this, with God's will, he will be ordained in 2027.
After two years of strong showings, Adam Lange ’99 finally broke through and took first place in the 3rd Annual Xavier March Madness Bracket Challenge. Congratulations to Adam on his persistence in defeating 56 competitors to take home the title.
Watch for information on the 4th annual challenge coming in February!
The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both won conference again this year. The girls won their third straight conference title and are back-to-back state champions! The boys won their second conference championship in a row and qualified two seniors for the state meet, Noah Donnermeyer ‘24 and Luke Krull ‘24. Individually, Lilie Fouts ‘24 won the conference meet and finished fourth at state. Noah Donnermeyer ‘24 and Annalise Minorik ‘24 both finished third in their respective conference races.
Xavier football finished the season with a 10-2 record while capturing their third straight Bay Conference championship and a win over FVL in the Apple Bowl! The Hawks’ season ended in level 3 of the WIAA playoffs to a talented Lodi team. Reid Hietpas ‘24 was the conference defensive player of the year and Carter Appl ‘25 was the linebacker of the year in the conference. Isaiah Des Jardins ‘24 took home running back of the year honors while Adam Earle ‘24 was the conference offensive lineman of the year.
The girls’ volleyball team finished the season with a 45-3 record, another conference championship and their second straight state championship. Libero, Belle Shea ‘24, and setter, Mariah Potter ‘24, were unanimous first team all-conference selections with Potter being named the Bay Conference player of the year for the second consecutive season.
The girls’ tennis team qualified for team state along with six individual qualifiers. The girls secured another conference championship to add to their decorated history and finished as state runner-up. Gabby Stammer ‘25 and Grace Ogden ‘25 finished in fourth place in the doubles bracket at state.
The boys’ soccer team won their first conference championship since 2014 and finished the year with a 20-4 record. The Hawks were also regional champions and ended their season in a competitive sectional final match against St. Mary Catholic. Wyatt Rouamba ‘26 was the conference defensive player of the year.
The Xavier girls’ golf team also qualified for state and are champions of the Bay Conference. The program had a very impressive postseason, winning regionals, placing as runner-up at sectionals, and finishing fourth at the state golf meet. Sophomore, Aliisa Helminen ‘26 finished in fourth place individually at the state golf meet in Madison.
JJ Vander Loop ‘24 won the “Red, White & Blue” circuit at WIR. JJ was the youngest driver that night by quite a margin. The photo to the left includes JJ’s mock trial teammates, Miranda Romnek ‘24, Allison Taylor ‘24, Sophia H. Bauman ‘24, and Angela McGreevey ‘24 who went to support him at the race!
Both elementary campuses celebrated VIP Days this fall, where grandparents, parents, and/or special VIPs were invited to come to school to spend time with the students and participate in different activities such as Mass, dance parties, classroom visits, and sweet treats.
This day is so meaningful to students as they get to show family members projects they have been working on, new friends they have met, and a glimpse into what their days look like!
Xavier elementary campuses celebrated All Saints Day on Wednesday November 1, 2023 by attending Liturgy. Marquette 2nd and McDonald 3rd graders carried on the special tradition of selecting, researching, and dressing up as their favorite Saint. In addition, each campus had additional special activities that included a Living Saints Museum to share knowledge of individual Saints and class discussions at all grade levels.
Xavier Elementary Home and School Association (HSA) held its fourth annual Color Run at Xavier Middle School on September 28th. Elementary kids and Frankie the Hawk joined us for a colorful night of fun! The event started with running a course designed by volunteers as faculty decorated students with powder. The event was concluded with a giant “color blast” in the middle of the field. Superintendent, John Ravizza even joined in again this year!
The Color Run is a fundraiser for HSA. HSA supports the elementary faculty and staff throughout the year with classroom supplies, conference and in-service meals, appreciation gifts, Thankful Thursdays, treats on holidays, and supports all students with family events throughout the year. A special thank you to our Color Run committee and volunteers. We sincerely appreciate all of you!
Annie Strick '24 and Angela McGreevy '24 were awarded the Spirit of Kateri Award at Camp Tekawitha. Each week, Camp Tekakwitha staff awards the Spirit of Kateri Award to a few exceptional campers in recognition of their leadership, love of Christ, embodiment of our camp theme, and dedication to serving their fellow campers and friends at Camp Tekakwitha. Annie and Angela were among two of four campers honored in their session, nominated by their counselors and selected by the staff!
This summer, our theme was ROOTED, encouraging all campers and staff to plant their roots in Christ and find their strength in their faith. St. Kateri Tekakwitha, our patroness, embodied this in her everyday life. As a young child, Kateri learned about Jesus and made that a priority for the rest of her life, walking miles everyday for years to make it to Mass. St. Kateri displayed a deep love for Jesus amidst numerous obstacles, but her faith inspired her to help care for all she encountered, especially the elderly and sick in her community. Our goal is for each camper to leave camp with the seeds of faith planted and Annie and Angela lead by example, sharing their faith with everyone they encountered at camp!
Spirit of Kateri was awarded to Angela McGreevy '24 and Annie Strick '24
Winners of the Spirit of Kateri Award are honored among the campers and parents, and receive a shirt with the last words of St. Kateri, “Jesos Konoronkwa” (Jesus, I love you). We’re so proud of Annie and Angela!
Jonathan Bryan ’20 was recently featured in a UW-Madison article highlighting notable December grads. Bryan was recognized because he and three other students started the “Bridging Wisconsin” project. “Bridging Wisconsin” connects underrepresented students with undergraduate mentors. The mentors help the students with post-high school graduation planning, with an emphasis on higher education. Bryan, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Psychology as well as a certificate in Health and Humanities, was also chosen to speak at the College of Letters & Science’s pre-commencement gathering and to represent the college during the commencement ceremony. He hopes to continue his education and become a physician.
Faith is woven into every day at Xavier Middle School. In addition to those daily experiences, XMS students have the opportunity for more in-depth experiences throughout the year. Two that have taken place already this school year were the seventh graders making their own rosaries and then going to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion with their rosaries and the eighth graders attending the Diocese of Green Bay Vocation Fair that took place at Sacred Heart in Appleton.
Seventh grade students prepared in many ways before their field trip to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion earlier this fall. They began by visiting four Marian Shrines via Google Earth and studying each of them, learning who Mary appeared to and what the circumstances were. In addition, seventh grade students learned about the history of the rosary and its prayers and mysteries. Once they had learned about the rosary and the process of creating one, each student made his/her own rosary. The process is personal (students choose their own beads) and beautiful for each student.
In early October, all XMS seventh graders boarded buses for Our Lady of Champion. Students prayed as a group and then participated in five sessions to learn about the sacred grounds. Sessions included:
1. The Rosary Walk where students got to utilize the rosaries they had made.
2. The Stations of the Cross was an outdoor experience where students visited the updated statues.
3. The Grottos are where students learned about the various holy statues on the property including Pope John Paul II, St. Bernadette, and St. Francis of Assisi. They also got to see Adele’s gravesite and that of Sammie, the dog who loved to visit the shrine and is now buried there.
4. The Apparition Site (Oratory) where students felt sincere peace amid Mary’s presence. Students relished their time in this spot and lit candles for loved ones, enjoyed seeing the relics and the wall of crutches that people have left there after miraculous healings.
5. Shrine Grounds Search in which students did a quiet scavenger hunt to learn even more about the grounds.
The spiritual field trip was a very powerful day for XMS seventh graders. We are truly blessed that this shrine is close enough to visit to give students these impactful experiences.
In its second year, the Diocese of Green Bay’s Vocation Fair for eighth graders was another amazing experience during National Vocations Awareness Week. Vocation means our calling from God. The Diocese held the vocation fair over two days to bring all Diocesan eighth graders attending Catholic schools together to give them the opportunity to explore various vocations. This year’s theme was “Quo Vadis” which is Latin and means “Where are you going?” Students pondered how they want to be holy and considered that, ultimately, our vocation is to be a saint.
As part of the experience, students were treated to rapper Joe Melendez who got students moving in the gym and was also a very inspiring speaker. Students also had some open gym time where Father Patrick Costello and some seminarians played Frisbee with them. Fathers Mark Mleziva and Kevin Ripley spoke to the boys about vocations while Sister Carol spoke with the girls. Many Diocesan priests were there to support the students and share their vocation experience in a fun environment. As you’ll see in the photos, students wore yellow discs that their religion teacher, Mary Casey Benthein '86, had them wear that
day telling the students to think of them as their halos. Many students stated that they didn’t fit, which was a teaching moment where students were reminded to grow into their halos.
Later this year, XMS eighth graders will also have the opportunity to visit St. Francis Xavier Cathedral and St. Norbert Abbey.
“I felt like all the stress and anxiety just went away. I felt a true inner peace when I was there.”
-Natalie
“When I was at the apparition site, I felt a connection with God that I have never felt before.”
-Caleigh
“I felt Mary a lot at the apparition site. It was almost like Mary had left her mark and people made it bigger with the blue candles. It felt like a warm hug.”
–Harper
“The pilgrimage helped me feel closer to God and Mary. All the sites made me feel really calm and at peace.” I thought the whole field trip was amazing and peaceful and spiritual.”
-Brooke
Ashley Turner ’12 is the new Associate Principal at Xavier Middle School. Ashley is a graduate of the Xavier Catholic School System having attended St. Bernadette, St. Joe’s, and finally graduating from Xavier High School in 2012. After graduating high school, Ashley went on to obtain a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Carroll University (‘16), a master’s degree in School Counseling from Lakeland University (‘19), and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of WisconsinMadison (‘22).
For the previous five years, Ashley has worked in the Appleton Area School District as an elementary school counselor. As a school counselor Ashley was working with kids in one-on-one, and in small group and whole class settings. She also took on the role of liaison between the elementary school counselors and the Appleton Area School District. In that role, Ashley was mentoring other counselors, writing and developing curriculum, and meeting with district administrators advocating for student needs.
Ashley has really enjoyed being back in the Xavier system thus far. The community aspect is something that she cherished as a student and has proven to be as amazing a benefit as a staff member as it was as a student. Families have been incredibly supportive and welcoming and she is looking forward to growing her career with us here in the Xavier Catholic School System.
Kathy Bates ’71 was recently inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame honoring a career that spanned 45 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator, all at Xavier High School.
One of the first female high school athletic directors (ADs) in the state, Kathy led Xavier athletics for 29 years. She also served on the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association Statewide Board for 18 years, having repeatedly been elected by her colleagues across northeastern Wisconsin. She is only the sixth female AD inducted into the WADA Hall of Fame. Kathy was among the ADs instrumental in providing input and shaping all high school sports for the entire state of Wisconsin. Her prestigious career had a tremendous impact on so many student-athletes for so many years.
In 1976, Kathy began a 17-year tenure as an English teacher at XHS before she became the AD in 1992. A long-time coach, she was the varsity girls’ volleyball coach for 14 years, head girls’ track and field coach for 4 years, and assistant track and field coach for 29 years. Kathy also served as Dean of Students at the school for 25 years, starting in 1993. She coached many Xavier teams in state tournament competitions, both under WISAA and WIAA. Kathy’s husband, Mike ‘71, also coached at XHS for 28 years and volunteered with Xavier Athletics and the Xavier Booster Club for 50 years. Mike stepped back from his traditional role at Xavier at the same time that Kathy retired.
Kathy received numerous awards over her career including the State Award of Merit from the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association in 2019 and the District 4 Athletic Director of the Year in 2010. Twice she was named the District AD of the Year for the Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Directors Association in 1993-94 and 1995-96. She was selected Educator of the Year at Xavier High School in 1992, received the Bonner Award at Xavier High School, was named the Fox Valley Christian Conference Coach of the Year in Girls’ Volleyball in 1984-85 and 1987-88, and received the Red Smith Award from the Xavier Booster Club in 1996.
During her Xavier tenure, Kathy oversaw numerous athletic projects including the building of a second gym and the renovation or construction of all existing Xavier athletic facilities, including the track, soccer and softball fields, tennis courts, and the upcoming artificial turf for Rocky Bleier field. Upon her retirement in 2021, the Kathy Bates Athletics Fund was created in her honor. If you would like to make a gift to honor and thank Kathy for her dedication and service, please visit www.xaviercatholicschools.org/giving/ index or contact Bob Biebel at (920) 735-9380.
Countless XHS students have started donating blood thanks to Xavier Service Club’s (formerly Key Club) blood drives held right at Xavier High School. Regardless of why students start donating (some do it to get out of class, some do it for the post-donation cookies, some do it for the cord at graduation, and some do it simply because it is the right thing to do), they often learn quickly of its importance. For Xavier alumna, Kiki Wagner ‘20, blood donation eventually also became plasma donation and no one has learned the importance of that donation more intimately than Kiki. Kiki began donating plasma during her senior year of high school. In addition to it being the right thing to do, it was an easy way to earn some extra cash. Kiki left for college that fall, but had plans to donate while home on Christmas break in December 2020. Little did she know at the time, she would become the recipient instead of the donor, Kiki came home from college for Christmas break not feeling great. Thinking she was worn down from college life and finals, she brushed it off. Soon she and her family realized it was more than regular fatigue, so much more. Kiki began having coordination issues as well as difficulty speaking, eating, and
seeing. After a trip to the emergency room and several tests, Kiki was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and immediately placed in the ICU. GBS is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Kiki’s course of treatment in the ICU included vital plasma treatment. Plasma exchange is done to rid the body’s original plasma of certain antibodies that our bodies use to attack the peripheral nerves. Kiki credits the plasma treatment for saving her life. She endured four-hour daily treatments, but those treatments allowed her to improve enough to start all of her therapy needed for her road to recovery.
Kiki was lucky in that she was released from the hospital after just one week, though all of her therapy (physical, occupational and speech) continued daily at home. Several weeks later, Kiki suffered a relapse of the acute phase of GBS. This time, Kiki received intravenous immune-globulin replacement therapy in which the protein from donated plasma is introduced into the body. Again, it played a key part in her recovery.
Kiki’s road to recovery has been long, but she is back to living a healthy life and continues attending college. She still has some numbness in her feet and some facial weakness, but considers herself blessed. Many with GBS experience symptoms like fatigue, abnormal muscle sensations, and aches and pains for the rest of their lives. Kiki believes she would not be where she is today without her family, medical staff, and plasma donors. She wants to thank everyone who donates plasma—whatever their reason—believing it’s one of the most amazing gifts people can give.
In January, 2023, Kiki was chosen "New Plasma Hero" by the Be A Plasma Hero Foundation for her work in recruiting donors and educating others in the importance of Plasma Donation. For those local and interested, Xavier High School offers blood drives right at XHS four times/year. For those interested in donating plasma, check out your local resources today!
It is with gratitude, joy, and sadness that I announce my retirement from the Xavier School System. Knowing this was God's plan for me all along, I am so grateful and blessed to have been able to do a job that I love for the past 29 years (22 of them at Xavier)! I want to sincerely thank you for the gift of your children and entrusting them to me and this school community. I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to get to know so many amazing families and in some small way, helped to impact the lives of all of the students I have had over the years, both academically and spiritually. I will always cherish the memories of the countless laughs, hugs, and 'aha' moments that we've shared together. I am honored to have been part of such a wonderful school community both as a parent and an employee, and I will always remember the positive impact it has had in my life. Live Jesus in our hearts... forever.
Xavier has been home to me for many years. It has been an honor to work with hundreds of students and their families. It has been a pleasure to have amazing co-workers to learn from and to offer support, all in the name of helping children continue to be the best version of themselves. My own children had the privilege to be Hawks from kindergarten through high school graduation, and for that I am eternally grateful. I've felt God calling me to evolve into my next chapter of life for several years. It's exciting, and a bit terrifying. My head knows it's the right decision, but my heart hasn't quite caught up! I'm not sure exactly what this next chapter looks like, but it will include an abundant amount of time with family and friends, and a slower pace of life where I will definitely stop and smell the roses!
Dear Friends of Xavier,
As the President of Xavier, I am thrilled to share with you the progress made in the last three years toward finalizing and implementing the long-range strategic plan that we started in 2018. Countless individuals have contributed and worked tirelessly to develop and bring the strategic vision of the system to its current state.
The plan we are presenting consists of three key components:
1.Four pillars that represent the values and vision of the Xavier System.
2.Five-year strategic goals that are aligned with critical areas of the System's operations.

We are excited to present this plan, and a great deal of work has already been completed in our efforts to drive this plan forward. Our goal is to make Xavier Catholic Schools a place that our students, staff, and families deserve and ensure the long-term future of the Catholic Community of the Fox Valley.

“Philanthropy is not just the check-writing kind, but the kind where an investment of heart and soul into advocacy for people and causes truly makes a difference.”
-Mark Calmes ‘69Mark Calmes is not one to boast of his accomplishments. In fact, he initially didn’t want to tell this story for that reason. He agreed to share his story now because at this point in his life, he has gained perspective and has found it advantageous at times to share his life experiences, especially if those experiences can educate, inspire, or otherwise help someone navigate their own journey of life. We hope this Alumni Feature touches you and educates, inspires or helps in some way.
Mark Calmes graduated from Xavier in 1969. He went on to a very successful 45-year career at Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM). In his personal life, Mark and his late wife Jane were blessed with four children, grandchildren, and a beautiful life. In 2009, Jane was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and that diagnosis started a new life’s journey for them; not only Jane’s health journey, but also a philanthropic journey that continues today. After a heroic eight-year battle with ALS, Jane passed away in August, 2017. Jane’s legacy lives on through Mark and his family’s continued philanthropic efforts.
Prior to Jane’s diagnosis, Mark considered himself a “normally generous person”. He wrote checks when people asked and happily supported others. Jane’s diagnosis and their interactions with and support from the ALS Association changed something
in Mark. Living the experience and seeing firsthand what this horrific disease does to people and, equally important, how it impacts the families stirred something deep inside. Shortly after Jane was diagnosed, Mark and Jane formed “Jane’s Angels”, a family and friends team for the “Walk to Defeat ALS”. The “Jane’s Angels” team walks annually and is extremely proud of the fact that this past September, the team surpassed the $1 million fundraising mark.
Mark and Jane didn’t stop with the walk team. They also created a foundation that provided financial support and resources for families dealing with ALS in central and southern Illinois. In addition, in 2019, Mark created the first national ALS scholarship program. Not only did Mark create the program, he pledged $1 million to fund it. It was a new aspect of service for the ALS Association. It is called the Jane Calmes ALS Scholarship Fund and it provides financial assistance to students whose ability to pay for education has been severely compromised due to the family’s financial burden from ALS. Mark is proud to share that this program has awarded over $2 million to students nationwide. He said, “These scholarships are helping kids attain their dreams, which might have otherwise been lost. ”Mark feels very blessed to have been able to create this program to provide these opportunities. Many recipients share that
they want to go on to research cures for ALS or become doctors and nurses. He knows these scholarships are also teaching the recipients about philanthropy as many say they will pay it forward.
Concurrent to the scholarship program, Mark also created a regional fund to honor Jane and her compassion and care for others. This fund replaced the original foundation he and Jane started. Jane’s Angel Fund provides financial assistance to ALS families for everyday needs not covered by private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. This program has become one of the chapter’s most sought-after services and has also inspired others to honor their loved ones by creating Angel Funds in their name. Recently, the ALS Association decided to make this a national program.
More than just writing checks, giving has become a different experience for Mark over the last 15 years. While he has invested monetarily in the ALS Association’s efforts, he has also invested his heart and soul.
Mark was named a member of the ALS Association National Board of Trustees in 2015 and joined the St. Louis Regional Chapter Board of Directors in 2019. His firsthand experience with the disease has allowed him to be a powerful advocate for those impacted by ALS. He leads and serves on many national committees for ALS. In recognition of his significant contribution to the ALS Association, he received the inaugural Rebecca Luker Courage Award of Recognition from Target ALS, a research foundation. Mark makes the argument that philanthropy isn’t a one-way street, as he has been richly rewarded from his work by what it has done for his heart and soul, describing it as incomparable to anything else. Mark feels he is blessed to have had the opportunities to do what he has done.
The ALS community and the world as a whole are blessed by Mark and his innovative and compassionate philanthropic efforts. Not only is he making an impact today, but his and Jane’s work and legacy will live on from what has been created and built.
School safety is a top priority for the Xavier Catholic System and is essential for creating a supportive learning environment and a spirit of hospitality across our campuses. We want all students, staff, families and guests to feel safe and valued. With this in mind, we work closely with the Appleton Police Department and Diocese of Green Bay in developing and reviewing policies and protocols to promote and ensure safety.
Starting in the 2023-24 school year, the Xavier System implemented safety protocols from the “I Love U Guys” Foundation with support from the Appleton Police Department. The “I Love U Guys” programs for crisis response and post-crisis reunification are used in more than 40,000 schools, organizations and communities around the world. The protocols are created through research-based best practices of school administrators, public safety experts and first responders.
On June 27, Sgt. Dane Coonen '05 (Threat Assessment Officer, Appleton Police Department and Lt. Jack Taschner (School Resource Officer Coordinator, Appleton Police Department) met with school leaders and campus staff to review safety protocols and discuss implementation of Standard Response Protocols from "I Love U Guys" Foundation. During our August in-services Sgt. Coonen and Lt. Taschner presented to all faculty and staff. “Through these comprehensive measures, we create a safe and supportive environment for all members of our community. This is essential for promoting student success and well-being,” explained Dr. John Ravizza, Superintendent.
Here at Xavier Catholic Schools, we’re thrilled to announce that we have been recognized as a 2024 Best School by Niche! This year, we ranked #1 in Best Private K-12 Schools in the Appleton Area!
Niche’s data sources for the annual K-12 school rankings include the U.S. Department of Education, Private School Universe Survey, Common Core Data, the School District Finance Survey, Civil Rights Data Collection, School Attendance Boundary Survey, Niche K-12 student and parent surveys and data updates from Partners through Partner accounts. Schools and districts that have claimed their Niche Profiles have limited access to make data changes. Areas of evaluation are:
Top Colleges Score – Average score of colleges that students are most interested in or go on to attend, based on Niche Best Colleges ranking.
College Enrollment – Percentage of seniors who go on to four-year colleges.
Culture and Diversity – Based on racial and economic diversity and survey responses on school culture and diversity from students and parents.
Parent/Student Surveys on Overall Experience – Niche survey responses scored on a 1-5 scale regarding the overall experience of students and parents from the school.
Student-Teacher Ratio – Ratio of students to full-time teachers. Please note: Student-teacher ratio is not a representation of average class size.
We've earned this ranking by scoring highly in these factors that aim to capture what it’s really like to attend Xavier. While we’ve always known that Xavier Catholic Schools is a wonderful place to learn and grow, we’re so proud of our students and staff for earning this national distinction.
You can check out Xavier Catholic Schools’ profile and see the full list of 2024 rankings, methodologies, and data sources over at www.niche.com/. Thanks again to our community for working hard every day to make Xavier worthy of national attention.
As we move into 2023-2024, Xavier Catholic Schools would like to share our fundraising goals, but first, it’s fitting to recognize what your generosity helped us accomplish last year. The Xavier community generously donated in excess of $3 million dollars. Here are a few of the highlights:
Over $2 million was generated to balance the annual system budget. An additional $1 million was contributed to restricted use, including $200,000 to the Xavier Foundation, $450,000 for capital improvements and $350,000 for Xavier auxiliary organizations.
Among the many projects completed or scheduled for completion are: installation of an athletic turf field, new high school commons furniture, advanced technology in classrooms, new Business Center, advanced security measures and elementary playground equipment.
By supporting Xavier’s “Next Moves” benefactors transform lives, foster active faith development, and ensure long-term system viability. Your gift helps Xavier set a new standard by delivering quality academics and experiences that prepare students for successful careers and fulfilling lives.
Annual Giving Goal - Generate $2.4 million to ensure a balanced system budget.
Why? This amount represents the difference between dollars received in tuition, fees, parish investment and the total cost of a Xavier education. How? Xavier achieves this goal through generous gifts to Celebrate, The Xavier Fund, The Xavier Foundation and Xavier Day.
Foundation Giving Goal – Generate $2.0 million for the Xavier Foundation in the following areas:
Faculty and Staff Endowment - $1.5 Million Academics and Technology - $200,000 Capital Improvements - $150,000
Establishing new funds and adding to existing funds - $150,000
Why? The Xavier Foundation is a vital source of revenue for the system and its yearly distribution of dollars provides income to the system budget. A well-managed endowment sends a message of planned long-term stability, fiscal responsibility and ensures a sustainable future. The bulk of current foundation funds are primarily directed toward scholarship and tuition assistance and the system needs long-term funding to support faculty and staff, technology, and capital improvements.
How? To learn more on how you can help or to make a donation visit www.xaviercatholicschools.org/giving/nextmoves or contact Bob Biebel and the Xavier Advancement Office at (920) 735-9380 Ext 5502.
Last June, Frau Rosenbaum and Frau Sass, took eleven students from Xavier High School on a trip to Germany and Austria for two weeks. German class students had the opportunity to practice their language skills and immerse themselves in the German culture. Students got to experience German family life while staying with host families in Altötting, Germany for the first week. Xavier students attended classes at our partner school, the Maria Ward Schule. In addition, they went on field trips to Berchtesgaden, Salzburg, the Herrenchiemsee Palace, and took a cable car ride in the Alps to the Kampenwand Mountain. During the second week of the trip, the group traveled throughout Bavaria and Austria. They visited Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Hall in Tirol, and Munich. The students saw waterfalls, hiked through gorges, and visited the Nymphenburg Palace. The group had a wonderful time exploring Germany and Austria.
In September, sixteen students from the Maria Ward Schule visited Xavier High School. The Xavier students got to host the students whose families they stayed with while in Germany. German students went on field trips and attended classes. The German students visited Lambeau Field, the Onedia Museum, Devil's Lake, and Wisconsin Dells while they were in Wisconsin. This is a great partnership between the two schools and a wonderful opportunity for all students to practice their language and experience other cultures.
Last summer, XHS art teacher, Mrs. Balthazor, took fine arts students and interested parents on a “Highlight of Italy” tour. The group landed in Milan and visited the Milan Cathedral. Next they traveled to Venice and visited a glass art studio where they were treated to a hand blown glass art demonstration. After the demonstration, they toured St. Mark’s Square and rode the iconic gondolas though the city’s waterways. The following day, their travels took them to Verona where they visited Juliet’s Balcony and, of course, did some shopping. Their next stop was Florence where they enjoyed a walking tour of the city. There the group visited a leather shop where they were taught how leather boxes are made and the importance of leather in fashion in Italy’s culture.
The group also visited important sites such as Michelangelo’s David, the Tower of Pisa, as well as the Pisa Baptistery where they heard the vocal acoustics of a single vocalist as her voice demonstrated the structural ingenuity which was designed to amplify the acoustics. They found it spiritually uplifting to be in the room listening to the acoustics. Next the group traveled on to Rome and visited the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel. They also saw the Coliseum, the Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain. The following day, they drove to Sorrento and visited a cameo factory and the City of Pompeii. There they visited Stone Beach and swam with the view of Mount Vesuvius in the background—a highlight for the students!
It is with immense gratitude and pride that we celebrate the remarkable impact your generous gifts have made on Xavier, our students, and our shared mission. Over the past year, thanks to the support of an amazing community of donors, we have joined together to make tremendous strides in living our mission. Your willingness to share and invest in the future has allowed us to maintain our commitment to excellence in education and continue to foster an environment where every student can reach their potential.
As a community, last year over $2.1 million dollars was donated to help balance the budget and cover the true cost of educating. An additional $700,000 was donated for special infrastructure projects, fine arts, and athletics. Each gift is a testimonial to the belief and trust in the transformative power of a faith-filled Xavier education. Knowing we have your philanthropic support to assist us in continual improvement is a sense of strength.
Looking to the future Xavier, we are keenly aware that the educational landscape is rapidly evolving. In particular, our ability to recruit, retain, and reward our system's greatest asset, our faculty and staff. Over the next few years, our advancement efforts will focus in this area and we ask for your support on this important initiative.
On behalf of all Hawks –past, present, and future – I thank all those listed in this annual report. May all we do at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Schools continue to inspire your confidence in years to come. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Live Jesus in our Hearts,Complete audited financial statements are available upon request. Independent Audit completed by Clifton, Larson, Allen, LLP.
St. Francis Catholic School System publishes an annual report each year to thank our alumni, parents, grandparents, alumni parents, and friends for their generosity. Whether your gift was at the Founders Level or the Hawk Level, the financial resources you invest in Xavier grow over time - both through the lasting impact they have on students and the impact our students have on the world around them.
Gifts made between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023 to the system are acknowledged in their corresponding giving levels. Additionally, included in the list are the 102 funds within the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation that distribute income each year, as well as funds within the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region, and the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Green Bay that support our school system.
The Advancement Office would like to properly recognize each donor and makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of these lists. We sincerely apologize if there are errors or omissions to this list and ask that should you find one, please contact us at bbiebel@xaviercatholicschools.org or at (920) 735-9380.

Dear Friends,
The St. Francis Xavier Catholic School Foundation is proud to honor all who have given generously to support the St. Francis Xavier School System through lifetime and legacy gifts. Through your generosity, the Foundation contributed almost $413,000 to the Xavier Catholic School System during the 2022/2023 school year, serving as a crucial source of revenue for the System. During that time, the Foundation received gifts totaling $154,623, and ended the year with assets of nearly $8.2 million. We celebrate your sacrifice and support, and share the gratitude of the entire Xavier community for your kindness.
The mission of the Foundation is to support the promise of a Catholic education through the Xavier Catholic School System. The Foundation stands as an enduring source of support for the greatest financial needs of the System and the students it serves through faith formation, academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and a supportive community. The Foundation also provides funds to help retain the amazing Xavier educators and staff who give so faithfully of themselves for our students, and to ensure that academic resources and facilities remain worthy of high expectations.
As the need for Christ-centered education grows, so do our aspirations for the Foundation. We must continue to make a Xavier education accessible and affordable for all who are called. We must attract and retain talented and dedicated educators who are passionate about sharing knowledge and faith formation with students. We must maintain our elementary, middle school and high school campuses as worthy destinations for our community’s finest students. Please consider joining those who have given by contacting us to discuss how your own gifts may have the greatest impact on continuing the Xavier legacy.
Sincerely,
Donations made to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation totaled $154,623 during the 2022-2023 fiscal year! We are grateful to the following individuals who made a gift towards one or more of the current 101 funds within the Foundation. Your donation is an investment in the future of our students and community.
The Advancement Office would like to properly recognize each donor and make every effort to ensure the accuracy of these lists. We apologize if there are any errors or omissions to this list and ask that should you find one, please contact us at 920-735-9380 or bbiebel@xaviercatholicschools.org.

Did you know that many companies will match charitable contributions to Xavier from their employees at rates as high as 2 to 1 or even 3 to 1?
In an effort to maximize our advancement revenue, Xavier Catholic Schools has recently partnered with Double the Donation, the nation’s leading provider of matching gift software for educational institutions. This platform allows a donor to not only make a gift to the system but also to see if that gift will be matched by their employer.
Online: When you go online to make a gift using any of our Xavier giving platforms just fill in your employer’s name and you will immediately be informed if they have a matching gift program. In addition, it will share the specifics of the program and how you can secure additional funds for Xavier.
Making a gift in person or through the mail: Simply go to www.xaviercatholicschools.org/giving/index and fill in your employer's name. All the necessary information will be shared with you.
If your employer is a matching gift company, complete the process and see your gifts increase!
The Melvin E. and R. Virginia Bartelt Scholarship Fund has been generously established from the proceeds of the estate of R. Virginia Bartelt. This fund will provide financial support to students attending Xavier Catholic Schools. Melvin, a charter member of St. Thomas More, passed away in 2017 at the age of 95 and Virginia in 2023 at the age of 101. They both grew up in Kiel, Wisconsin and had four children who all attended Xavier High School: Mary ’68, Tim ’69, Betsy ’74, and Michael ’77 who passed away in 2009. Xavier is truly grateful for this gift and for helping to provide the gift of a faith-filled education to others. We ask the Xavier community to remember the Bartelt family in your prayers. Additional donations to the fund can be made through the Xavier Foundation.
Xavier Catholic Schools extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Kermit J. Frahm ‘65, who passed away on August 11, 2022. Upon graduation, Kermit enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent three years in service, including time in the ’67 Gulf War. After his service, he began working at Miller Electric and remained there for his entire career, spanning over 30 years. Kermit had four siblings Carol ’75, Cindy, Leroy, and Myra. Upon his passing, Kermit generously included Xavier in his estate plans, donating his home.
After discussion with the family, it was decided that in lieu of receiving his house, Xavier would in turn receive its value and the house would be donated to Habitat for Humanity. As part of the proceeds, a portion of the gift to Xavier was designated by the family to offset St. Pius Parish's investment.
On behalf of the Xavier community, we wish to extend our thanks and gratitude to Kermit and the Frahm family for their generosity and the positive impact it has on our students. If you would like more information on how you can remember Xavier in your estate plans, contact the Advancement Office at (920) 735-9380.

Construction is now underway, following a groundbreaking event that was held on November 20, and is expected to be completed in the spring or summer of 2024!
St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System is making exciting changes to Rocky Bleier Field at Xavier High School. Field renovations include installing artificial turf, new high jump area/long jump pits, the addition of water to player sidelines and upgraded electrical facilities. Xavier’s commitment to enhancing facilities not only provides ideal settings for extracurricular activities but also instills a sense of pride within the community. This project is one of many outlined in a comprehensive master facility plan to enhance school facilities and, by extension, the educational experience of our students.
