PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, Welcome to the Winter 2020 issue of X, The Xavier Magazine. Winter came early this year, and as I write this message, we are well into our 4th measurable snowstorm of the year! As we approach our Christmas break, I continue to be in awe of the way our students, faculty, staff, and alumni continue to make their marks on the world through a myriad of service initiatives. For example, in this issue, you’ll learn about our football team volunteering their time and talent for the annual Autism Football Camp and the nearly one thousand members of our community participating in the Ethel Moehring Help Your Neighbor Day. You’ll learn more about student service and campus ministry at Xavier Middle School, as well as read a profile of our parent volunteer coaches. And we include an article on how we incorporate giving and service at the elementary level. I am often asked how we gauge the success of what we do here at Xavier Catholic Schools. My answer is that we don’t measure success by ACT scores or athletic championships. In fact, we gauge our success by taking a look at how our students live their lives after they graduate. On page 14 you’ll learn how graduates from one of our families live that objective. We prepare our students, at all levels, to go out into the world with an abundance of faith, hope, justice, and love. Throughout this issue, I hope you’ll enjoy reading about many additional aspects of our Xavier community that make us unique. And in our Annual Report section, take a look at our list of donors and members of our Legacy Circle. Our financial statements give you a better example of how we steward our financial resources to advance our vision of building schools of missionary discipleship.

Mee Moua ‘88 is the

Principal of InterDependent Group, LLC, which provides training, facilitation and coaching support for individuals and organizations in planning, leadership, and transformation. She is passionate about democracy building, heart leadership and making visible the interconnectedness among peoples. Some of her clients are local and state elected officials, community and national foundations and non-profit organizations undertaking cultural transformation endeavors. She is the immediate past President and Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-AAJC, a leading national civil rights organization based in Washington, D.C. Prior to her work in Washington, D.C., she was an attorney in private practice in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a member of the Minnesota State Senate. She was the first Hmong American to be elected to a state legislature in the United States, served three terms before retiring in 2010, and served as the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Mee was born in Laos and came to the United States in 1978 as a refugee. She grew up in the Midwest, attended Xavier High School and Brown University, received her MPA from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, and earned her JD from the University of Minnesota Law School.

Chuck ’62 and Pat (Dietz) Schreiter ’65 celebrated their 50th anniversary this summer with their three children and eight grandchildren. Rita (Deprez) Parker ’67 and husband Gerry spent a week in Alaska this past summer with a family friend (Michael). Places they visited included Elmendorf Air Force Base, Fort Richardson, Talkeetna, and Denali. Rita and Gerry have lived in Delaware for the last 31 years. Gerry recently retired as a Captain in the Air Force where he flew F-22s. Colleen (Keberlein) Schmitt '68 works at St. Martin of Tours Parish in Cecil as the Choir Director. She is also self-employed, teaching piano, voice and guitar lessons.

1970s Phil Gloudemans ’70 was one of 28 former Lynch/vanOtterloo YMCA (Marblehead, MA) board members who were honored on August 15 with the sixth annual “David Sherman Community Strengthening Award.” The emeriti board members served prior to or after the opening of the new, 90,000-square-foot facility in 2009. The late David Sherman was the most generous donor to the building’s $20-million capital campaign.

1990s

Dan DesJardins ’97 and Joy (Hietpas) DesJardins ‘97 were married in 2002. They live in Little Chute with their six children, ages 18 months to 13 years old. They are members of St. John Parish, and their children attend school there as well. Dan works for Nurses PRN and Joy works for Children’s Hospital. 2000s

In November, Athletic Director Kathy (Hansen) Bates ’71 was awarded the “State Award of Merit” through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). It is an award presented annually by the state to a member that demonstrates outstanding leadership, praiseworthy service and achievement. She was chosen by the state athletic administrator association. Dr. Kristina Schaloske attended Xavier High School as a German exchange student during the 1996-1997 school year. She returned to Appleton this fall while visiting the Midwest with her family. Her former host parents, Van and Karen Vehrs, and Xavier’s International Program Director, Sarah Neisen Shimek, provided the Schaloske family with a tour of the high school.

Angela Oleszko ’03

(pictured left, in Cinque Terre, Italy) moved in 2017 to Atlanta, Georgia, where she currently coordinates and leads a special education department for a Title I middle school. She received her bachelor’s and first master's degree from the University of Minnesota, then continued her education with an additional master's degree in special education from St. Mary's University of Minnesota. She visits Wisconsin and Minnesota a few times a year and continues to enjoy staying physically active, international travel, and advocating for the rights of marginalized populations.

Amy Winkelman ’01 was recently featured on NPR for her work with the Dane County bookmobile. Winkelman was instrumental in the pilot program to get the Dane County bookmobile out to parts of Madison where the children do not have access to transportation to get to the city branches. She also created a successful summer reading program promoting reading for both children and adults.

2000s

In August, Governor Tony Evers appointed Emily Lonergan ’05 to Outagamie Circuit Court Judge (Branch II). After graduating from XHS, Emily joined the Pre-Law Scholars Program at Marquette University, which allowed her to graduate from undergraduate and law school in 2011, after only six years, rather than seven. She worked at Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown for six years in Milwaukee prior to moving back home. In 2017, Emily began working with Peterson, Berk & Cross in Appleton before being selected to replace (retired) Judge Nancy Krueger this past summer. Emily also serves as chair of the high school mock trial program through the State Bar of Wisconsin.

Danielle Hansen ’12 married Owen Sutton in September at Gesu Church in Milwaukee. The couple met

50Years The weekend of August 16 - 18, 2019 was quite a reunion for the class of 1969. Not only did they celebrate 50 years since their high school graduation, the reunion weekend marked 50 years to the date of the historical Woodstock music festival. To the planning committee, it only seemed fitting to make this the theme of the weekend; “Three Days of Peace and Music”. The weekend began with an icebreaker on Friday evening at Waverly Beach. On Saturday afternoon, class members came together at Appleton Yacht Club for boat rides, dinner, songs, laughter, reflections on past memories, and the creation of new ones. Sunday wrapped up a busy weekend with a tour of Xavier High School and a cookout at Alicia Park.

Celebrating their 35th reunion on October 19, members from the class of 1984 enjoyed a tour of XHS in the afternoon followed by a gathering at The Bar on Lynndale.

30Years On September 7, the class of 1989 celebrated their 30th reunion at No Idea Bar.

25Years The class of 1994 celebrated their 25th reunion on September 14. Members attended the matinee performance of Rocky Bleier: The Play and toured Xavier High School. Freshmen Letter Follow-Up This year the alumni department hoped we could give every incoming freshman a letter from a Xavier alum at orientation. Starting high school can be a nerve-wracking time and we hoped to ease that transition with encouraging words from someone who had lived to tell about his/her experience. We asked alumni to share words of wisdom, general advice, fond memories and friendly words. We received some amazing letters! Our sincere gratitude to all of those who wrote letters. We hope to make this an annual tradition, so look for the request again next summer and make an impact in the life of a Xavier freshman no matter if you live near school or far away!

During the 2018-2019 school year, Xavier launched the inaugural Alumni Class Challenge. The goal was to increase alumni involvement by creating competition among classes. Each class was ranked by percentage of participation. As with any challenge, Xavier graduates rose to the occasion.

One Family…Multiple Paths to Service It’s often been said that the seeds of service are planted at home, and that Xavier nurtures those seeds and gives them room to grow and blossom. That’s apparent when you stop and take a look at the paths of the three Knott graduates, Ryan ’09, Jack ’14, and Sam ’17. Each of them has taken an unconventional path to grow in his service. Each is an Eagle scout, and each has branched out in ways that define them as individuals. Ryan (pictured on right) originally took a gap year after graduation and spent that time in Germany in a program that combined service with language and technical training. He was a certified EMT with the German Red Cross. Returning home, he was a Burke Scholar at Marquette where he volunteered regularly at Milwaukee food banks and soup kitchens. After graduation he spent two years teaching English in Tanzania as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Upon his return, Ryan enrolled at Loyola University in Chicago in a master’s program in education designed for post-overseas service. During that time he taught at St. Margaret of Scotland elementary school on Chicago’s south side. He is currently a kindergarten teacher at St. Benedict the African elementary school in Chicago. Ryan and his finance, Michelle, are planning a June 2020 wedding. Jack’s (left) journey took a different route. Football at Xavier was important to him, and he considered Coach Hinkens to be a mentor. After graduation, he also took a gap year when he joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard. After basic training and extended medic training, he enrolled at UW-Madison. In his sophomore year, he applied for, and was accepted, in the nursing program. His Guard service included hurricane relief in Florida, and he spent a year working as an EMT in Madison. As is often the case, Jack’s service in the National Guard interrupts continual learning in the classroom. This past October, Specialist Knott received orders for a 9 – 12 month deployment to Ukraine. During this deployment, he is serving as a medic with a NATO-based task force that includes U.S., French, and Swedish units. They are tasked with training the Ukraine military. His father, Tom, says, “Jack is proud to be a soldier. It is also helping to pay for school. From soccer to football to scouts, he has always placed a premium on service and being a team player.” Sam Knott (right) is currently working at Sure Controls while attending Fox Valley Technical College, concentrating on engineering. He currently is involved in preparing for this summer’s VBS at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Greenville. Perhaps Ryan best sums up the family’s attitude: “All these experiences have shaped (us) in enormous ways, and I know the seeds of these opportunities were sown at Xavier. Xavier prepared me to be a lifelong learner and servant-leader.”

Connor McKnight '03 works at 670 The Score, a Chicago all-sports talk radio station. He has been the cohost of the Bernstein and McKnight show since March of 2018. They cover all Chicago sports with a heavy emphasis on how bad the Bears have been this year and the station is also the home for all Cubs games. McKnight’s reflections during a recent email interview: As a Cubs fan my whole life, being tangentially attached to Cubs broadcasts is very cool. Like any job, working in sports media has its ups and downs but, at the end of the day, watching a ballgame for work is far better than working on spreadsheets, especially since I darn-near failed Mr. Mauthe’s geometry class. Prior to this job, I covered college football out west, worked for a minor league baseball team, worked as a sports radio reporter and anchor, and was the pre- and post-game host of White Sox radio broadcasts. There’s no question that the education I received at Xavier is instrumental in my job. First, everything I do, at the end of the day, is writing. My English teachers at Xavier were Ms. Centen, Mr. Riordan, and Mr. Oudenhoven. They were three of the finest teachers I have ever had, including in college. After I graduated college, I was lucky enough to be jobless and loitering around Appleton when Mr. Oudenhoven needed some extra help. It was my unparalleled privilege to assist his teaching. I learned so much about preparation, attention Connor interviewing Kris Bryant, third baseman for the Chicago Cubs to detail, and staying afloat when teaching an Honors English Class when only 23 years old. Thankfully, I had Dennis Oudenhoven every step of the way. I will never forget the grace, dignity, and faith that exuded from both Dennis and Carla Oudenhoven through that remarkably difficult time of his passing. Further, the support given to them by the Xavier community was nothing short of inspiring.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Mr. Mauthe once more. He ran the forensics team the four years I was there and his guidance helped me in public speaking. His ruthlessness in cutting me from the tennis team each and every year helped me understand that life isn’t fair.

Mr. Romenesko is a Xavier treasure. He runs the theater department, sure, but for most, he runs a haven where being outlandish, imaginative, showy, and loud was not only understood but encouraged—as long as you were at rehearsal on time. Those skills help when doing a radio show. Solid writing, a bit of self-assuredness, a willingness to be wrong—and laugh when you are—are all great skills in this line of work. That I have any of them in even the smallest quantity is, at least in part, thanks to Xavier. xaviercatholicschools.org 15

Rocky Bleier '64 Returns Home In September, the Xavier community welcomed home alumnus Rocky Bleier ’64 to perform his one-man show Rocky Bleier: The Play. Bleier is an alumnus of Xavier High School and the University of Notre Dame, a Vietnam veteran and four-time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In Rocky Bleier: The Play, he brings his life story to the stage. Bleier takes his audience to three bars (one being Bleier’s in Appleton) from his life where he tells stories of family, war and the best of Steeler Nation. Bleier has performed The Play throughout the country, and we are thrilled that he brought it to Xavier. The Xavier Fine Arts Theatre hosted four performances over three days. Each evening performance was followed by a VIP Meet and Greet. Thanks to the Greg and Julie Pawlak family, the Saturday matinee was a special “Salute to Veterans” performance where veterans and a guest could attend for free. Bleier’s visit included more than just performing The Play; the week featured many events. Mayor Tim Hanna of Appleton led a rededication ceremony for Rocky Bleier Run, a street located downtown by Jones Park that experienced recent reconstruction. McGuiness Irish Pub, the former location of Rocky’s childhood home and his parents’ pub Bleier’s Bar, changed its name back to Bleier’s Bar for the weekend. Matt Miller, owner of McGuiness, also dedicated a plaque to call attention to the location of Bleier’s childhood home. Bleier entertained and inspired students as he spoke during a high school assembly and gave the football team a pep talk before one of their practices. He also reunited with other members from the class of 1964 as they gathered to celebrate their 55th class reunion (see page 11). The Play not only brought Bleier back to Appleton but it brought many alumni back to the school and brought the greater community together. Thousands of people enjoyed the show, and countless had the opportunity to speak with Bleier himself. It was truly an honor to welcome him home to Xavier and to witness his graciousness and God-given ability to connect with people both from the stage and in person.

Six students had the opportunity to attend the Nobel Conference entitled “Climate Changed” this fall. This conference is the only conference in the world endorsed by the Noble Peace Prize. The experience was filled with thought-provoking ideas and world-renowned speakers. Xavier is privileged to take six students each year, and their fees are paid for by the Mielke Foundation. The girls’ cross country team finished the season as conference champions and fifth at state. Senior Annie Higgins ’20 finished as the top individual conference champion for the fourth straight year. Annie concluded her Xavier cross country experience on the state podium. She placed in the top ten at state all four years. The girls’ tennis team finished the season as conference champions for the seventh consecutive year. Singles player Anne Marie Knabe ’21 qualified for state along with doubles team Carly Bomier ’22 and Kylie McCormick ’22, which advanced to the third round. The doubles team of Erika Curtin ‘21 and Ellie Macksood ’20 won the Division 2 State Championship! They finished the season undefeated with a 34-0 record.

The girls’ volleyball team was undefeated conference champions and regional champions. They lost to Luxemburg-Casco in the sectional finals. Emma Oelhafen '20 was named Bay Conference Player of the Year.

The boys’ soccer team finished fourth in the conference and lost their first-round regional game at Ripon.

HOMECOMING 2019 Homecoming 2019 accommodated a weekend full of festivities. The annual parade, which runs from Pierce Park to Xavier High School, included the marching band, high school class floats, sports teams, Appleton parish priests, homecoming court, and System families. Students, family, friends and alumni came together to cheer on the Xavier Hawks football team as they competed against the West De Pere Phantoms. Saturday morning kicked off the second annual Homecoming 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk. Participants were able to choose between a 1-mile or 5k route. This non-competitive event, sponsored by the Campus Activity Board, donates registration fees and collected non-perishable food items to St. Joseph Food Pantry. Xavier High School students finished the weekend with a dance inside the school commons on Saturday night.

HIGH SCHOOL

Second Annual Girl’s Silent Retreat Last spring, nine junior and senior girls attended a 24-hour silent retreat. Theology teachers Mrs. Ann McKnight and Ms. Katie Wesolek organized and joined the girls on this spiritual experience. The retreat was held in Manitowoc at the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity - the women’s religious order that originally helped to found Xavier High School. As the name implies, participants refrain from speaking, technology and school distractions. The experience varies for each retreatant; they can use this time to pray together or alone, meditate, read in the Sisters’ spiritually-rich library, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, nap, take a silent walk around the grounds (weather permitting) or receive spiritual guidance from the chaperones or Sisters. Some highlights included the warm welcome and hospitality of the Franciscan Sisters, the beautiful chapel reserved for the retreatants, the inspiring insights the girls shared at the end of the retreat, and great food! Mrs. McKnight and Ms. Wesolek are planning another silent retreat sometime in late March or early April. It will again be open to junior and senior girls.

“This retreat was a chance for us to strengthen our relationships with God,'' wrote Emily Preston ‘20. “I found clarity and peace through this prayer opportunity...this time of prayer and relaxation has been one of the best retreats I have ever been on.”

The Xavier Equestrian Team (XET) made its debut at the homecoming parade. The team consists of twenty students from 6th through 12th grade. Seven of the students on the team competed against fifteen other schools in the District 6 Wisconsin Interscholastic Horsemanship Association (WIHA) State Qualifying Show in October. The show hosted 18 different events, including western showmanship, saddle seat equitation, ranch riding, barrel race and the two-person relay. XET’s inaugural competition was a success; our competitors were awarded 12 third places, nine second places and 25 first places in various events. XET is coached by alumna Natalie Kohl ’15 and moderated by Xavier teacher Mrs. Sarah Shimek.

Football Camp for Kids with Autism For the past 14 years, the Xavier High School football program has teamed up with the Autism Society of the Fox Valley (ASFV) to conduct a football camp for children with autism. Started in 2006, the day camp has drawn participants from all over northeast Wisconsin and has grown each year to include families from all over the state. The event is held on a Saturday during the high school football season.

The campers rotate through 10 stations conducted by the Xavier football players. The varied stations include passing, receiving, blocking, tackling, and scoring a rushing touchdown. The on-field portion of the event concludes with campers going through a high-five tunnel created by the football players. “My favorite part is meeting all the campers as they go through the 10 stations", recalled Xavier senior football player Bryce Woelfel '20. “The day brings all the players and the community together for such a good cause, and on that day, it is about way more than football.” All campers and football players receive a t-shirt. A free lunch for all participants, family members, and volunteers is featured at the end of the camp day. Xavier head varsity football coach Dave Hinkens states, “Every year this is one of the most special days in our season. Our players get to see the smiles on the faces of all the campers. The day provides a great opportunity for our players to be servant-leaders and realize how it is so rewarding to give of their time and talent to others.”

Ethel Moehring Help Your Neighbor Day The origin of Ethel Moehring Help Your Neighbor Day dates all the way back to the late 1990s when then Xavier campus minister, Sarah Simon '86, borrowed the idea from a group called Young Neighbors in Action. The idea was based on the concept that, before traveling abroad or to another city, it was important to help your neighbor at home. From that simple thought process, Sarah worked with several smaller groups and then created a special afternoon of service for the entire school. Each small group is comprised of students representing all four grades and a teacher, parent or other adult volunteer. In 2015, the name Help Your Neighbor Day was changed to Ethel Moehring Help Your Neighbor Day to honor the legacy of Ethel Moehring and her family. This annual event embodies her spirit of helping others and brings together students, faculty and volunteers for a day of service to the elderly, our parishes and not-for-profit organizations in our community. This year, under the direction of campus minister, Kelly Wilda '00, and with help organizing the event from the Ethel Moehring Scholars, the day featured traveling to over 100 different sites and roughly 1200 hours of service. The students raked leaves, washed windows, visited with residents in retirement communities and performed various household tasks. According to Kelly, “Residents and agencies are always so grateful and excited to welcome our students for the afternoon of service. The students and chaperones are able to get done what would otherwise feel overwhelming and nearly impossible for many elderly in our community.”

“I love taking a group of Xavier students to volunteer in the community every year on Help Your Neighbor Day. This year I took a group of young ladies to a local nursing home to visit the residents and assist them with a Bingo activity. It was great to see the smiles on the faces of the residents as the XHS students listened to them reminisce about their own high school experiences. In some cases, the girls simply held a hand or gave a smile to a nonverbal resident. It was a very rewarding experience to see a group of young people brighten the days of elderly members of our community.” -Keri, parent volunteer

“Where Do Priests Come From?”: Fr. Ryan Starks Growing up in a rural farming setting, the young Ryan Starks lived an uneventful life in Marion with his mom, step-dad, and step-siblings.They went to Sunday Mass and said meal prayers. He attended Marion High School, and religion wasn’t at the forefront of his life. “In fact,” he said, “it never occurred to me where priests came from.” Fast forward to his Confirmation retreat at St. Mary’s Parish. “All I knew was that I didn’t want to go,” he said. Yet as the retreat progressed, Father Ryan said that “For the first time in my life I felt a real, palpable sense of God’s love for me." Then one day, out of the blue, a voice came to him: “You should become a priest.” That was the same day as St. Pope John Paul II’s funeral. “I brushed if off for a while,” he recalled. “That’s not in my plans.” During the next two years, the calling came back more and more. After graduation from Marion High School, he enrolled at University of St. Thomas, and as the call grew, he entered St. John Vianney Seminary after one semester. “My classmates talked about this guy John Paul II. I didn’t know him.” Father Ryan later spent four years at Mundelein Seminary. One of his key takeaways from his seminary years impacted his perception of the priesthood. “(During that time) you come to learn about and watch hundreds of priests. The heart is inspired in many ways by each priest.” His deacon year was spent at St. Philip Parish, Green Bay, and served his seminary internship at St. Joseph Parish, Wautoma. Father Ryan was assigned to the Quad Parishes in Green Bay and was chaplain at UW-Green Bay. He has been pastor at St. Therese, Appleton, since July 2016. He finds his ministry at St. Therese especially meaningful because “When I think of the word ‘catholic’ I think ‘universal.’ And I smile when I think that here in northeast Wisconsin we are represented by individuals from 14 countries from Mexico to Micronesia.” He works to ensure that the parish comes together to be a place of hope, and they strive to put Christ at the center of all that they do. 26

Summarizing his priesthood, Father Ryan is quick to note. â€œI continue to go back to that moment on my Confirmation retreat- the moment that the Holy Spirit came to me. That renews my confidence and love to spend the rest of my life responding to that love as a priest.â€?

Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Teacher Fellowship Award In Spring 2019, Chris Goulet (Science, XMS) and Kelli McGreevey (Social Studies, XHS) each received the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Teacher Fellowship Award. Recipients are selected from a competitive field of applicants from across the state and represent the best and brightest in K-12 education. Educators are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students and ability to motivate others, and for their leadership and service within and outside the classroom.

Mrs. Goulet joined the Xavier System in 2014 as a science teacher at Xavier Middle School. She currently serves as the System’s STEM Coordinator. Mrs. McGreevey began in the Social Studies department at Xavier High School in 2002. She also serves as the moderator of the Mock Trial team. Mrs. Goulet and Mrs. McGreevey were among the 14 private school teachers across the state who received the prestigious Kohl Award.

Remembering Andy Mahoney… In an age of complex architecture and design, the role of the cornerstone is often overlooked. Structures that are meant to stand for generations rest on the strength of those few strategically placed pieces. Xavier High School has been blessed to establish a strong foundation through the cornerstones of some transformative professionals who have affected the lives of thousands of students. One such man was Mr. Andy Mahoney. As a teacher, coach and counselor, Mr. Mahoney provided direction to Xavier students for decades. It is the honor of the Xavier community to celebrate the life and career of Mr. Andy Mahoney, who passed away this fall. When alumni walk the halls of Xavier today, Mr. Mahoney’s influence can be felt throughout the building. Pictures of Coach Mahoney and his teams hang on “State Street,” celebrating their state championships in girls’ basketball (1978), track and field (1984 & 1985) and cross country (1992). On the second floor, the school counseling suite is one of the crown jewels of the school, a space designed to fit an exceptional counseling program developed and led by Mr. Mahoney to assist students as they prepared for college, career, and life in an ever-changing world. Mr. Mahoney also established the highly regarded ACT Prep class that attracts students from around the area to Xavier. Andy’s influence can also still be felt by the faculty, many of whom worked with him for more than twenty years. His colleague in counseling, Lori Schuh, says “He made students feel important and capable but he did the same thing for me (and many others) when I was new in my career.” Sarah Beth Shimek remembers Andy fondly for his conversations about work and life, saying “Andy had a heart for justice and loved his family so very deeply.” The faculty and staff at Xavier were honored to host Mr. Mahoney’s celebration of life in the Xavier theatre, an appropriate venue for a man who treated our school very much like a second home and was a father figure to so many. This fall, we take a moment to give thanks to God for the life of Mr. Andy Mahoney and for the blessings he brought to our Xavier family. Mr. Mahoney will be missed acutely but never forgotten. He is a cornerstone on which we will continue to build a Xavier of love, compassion and justice.

June '56- Catholic high school fund drive begins. Pledges totaling $1.3 million are received.

'60-The first Student Council is installed and The Xavue, the first student newspaper is published.

'70- Xavier earns North Central Association accreditation for the first time

'57- The Most Reverend Stanislaus Bona, Bishop of Green Bay leads ground breaking ceremony for the yet unnamed Catholic high school.

The first International Food Fair is held on April 12, 1973, under the direction of George Karras.

The first graduation ceremony takes place on June 3, 1962. Xavier becomes co-ed in 1965. Boys and girls no longer attend two separate schools within the building.

August '59- Registration opens for freshmen and sophomores. In accordance with the encyclical of Pope Pius XI, advocating separate education for boys and girls, the school is set up as a co-institutional high school.

Summer '14- Xavier Theatre Academy (XTA) begins its inaugural year. XTA is a summer learning/performance experience with auditions open to students in northeast WI, grades 1-9.

'83- The non-profit Xavier High School Foundation is established to provide supplementary funding for the school. Xavier celebrates its 25th anniversary in the fall of '84. Enrollment totals 568 students from 29 parishes throughout the Fox Valley.

A new tradition begins as senior art students create a mural on the hallway wall in 1985.

Xavier names and dedicates its gym the Gene "Torchy" Clark Gymnasium in 2004, named after the legendary coach and athletic director who served at Xavier from 1959-1969.

'90s '93- Enrollment, which dipped in the 80s, continues to climb and exceeds 400. Tuition is $2,100.

A $4.5 million Fine Arts Center, made possible by Clarence and Dolores Wallace, officially opens in 1998.

'10s

August 2006- A Mass is offered by Bishop David Zubik to celebrate the "new Xavier" which consists of a two-story classroom building, chapel, practice gym, gathering hall and administrative offices. Total cost reaches $7.5 million. In '07, Xavier is named as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the nation by Acton Institute, beginning a tradition that has been uninterrupted to the present time.

The classes of 2010 and 2011 each earned the highest ACT average in school history- 26.

'15- The construction of a new fitness center is completed as an addition to the back of the high school.

May 2016- The prayer garden is relocated to the front entrance. The garden is rededicated in memory of Dennis Oudenhoven.

Building A Community of Missionary Disciples Taking the lead from our System’s mission statement, service is woven into many parts of a student’s experience at Xavier Middle School. Service is a major component of who we are and what we encourage our students to be – servants who witness to their faith in Jesus Christ by what they do. The middle-school time is a unique time because students are at an age where many can perform group service, often for the first time. They can experience new ways to help their community with their friends and classmates. The goal is for students to take ownership of their service to create a lifelong commitment to serving others. Middle school expands upon the collections and projects done at the elementary level and lets students explore many options at the middle school level so that they can spread their wings individually and collectively before performing considerable service at the high school level. Eighthgrade students are required to complete five hours of service each semester so they can explore what they like and provide service in a way and at a location meaningful to themselves. This also prepares them for the high school commitment of 80 hours of documented service. Middle school students looking to get more involved with service can join Campus Ministry. Campus Ministry is a prayer and service club. The club meets once a month and plans prayer and service opportunities for the whole school. Past service opportunities have included serving at St. Joe’s Food Program, Pillars Family Shelter, Bethesda Thrift Store, and Feeding America and ringing bells for Salvation Army. Changing students’ perspectives from service being a burden to it being an opportunity sometimes allows them to see it in a whole new light. It is priceless to see the light bulbs come on when a student understands the true importance of serving others and exhibits the excitement to do so. 32

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Quarter Century in the Art Room Twenty-five years ago, I began teaching at St. Francis Xavier (then St. Joseph) Middle School. It has been a rewarding and fulfilling life journey. I quickly fell in love with my students and their parents … and the student artwork: exceptional! It didn't take long to realize my zeal to advance student creative-thinking skills needed to be complemented by ability enhancement. I quickly honed my curriculum to include foundation and classic drawing exercises: still life and portraiture. As the internet developed, the need to communicate effectively with visual images grew. My seventh-grade art students focus on art theory, symbolism, and visual communication. One of the many highlights occurred in 1995 when my eighth-grade students were asked to paint murals on the old cafeteria walls. They made 14 large murals: the parables of Jesus Christ in other cultural settings. God has answered prayer many, many times over the years, and we do ‘Scripture of the Hour’ at the close of most class hours. We’ve had wonderful times working together, creating beautiful, interesting projects in the art room (including the annual paper-mache projects). We've worked hard, stayed late, laughed, danced, rejoiced, gone through good times and hard ... we've learned and grown and we've enjoyed the journey very much. Parents: Our Most Valued Resource Xavier Middle School students are blessed with a myriad of extracurricular opportunities available throughout the year. Students can choose from athletics, service, writing, video gaming, robotics, skiing and everything in between. There is literally something for everyone. Middle school is an excellent time for students to explore opportunities to utilize and expand their talents and interests. If you can imagine it, there is probably a club or activity for it. All of these opportunities take considerable time and talent to lead and plan. While many teachers and staff moderate different groups, Xavier Middle School also relies heavily on parent volunteers. The group leaders and team coaches share their time and talents to teach our students valuable skills and lessons beyond the classroom, and for that, we are grateful. These volunteers also take time away from their own families to spend time with our students. If you see a parent moderator or coach, be sure to thank him/her for giving our students these amazing opportunities. If you see his/her family, thank them as well for their sacrifices of family time for our students. We are so blessed to have such phenomenal parent leadership and involvement. What do you get when you mix friends, fitness, food, fundraising and the Festival Foods Big Cart?

FUN!

The second annual Xavier Elementary School Color Run was hosted at Xavier Middle School on September 26, 2019. This Home and School Association fundraiser brought together students and families from both elementary campuses. The evening included running the track while teachers threw color on the students, racing both Mr. Robert Bires (Xavier Middle School principal) and school superintendent Dr. John Ravizza, riding on the Festival Foods Big Cart, food, and the new finale of a group “Color Blast”. This year, money was raised to fund the Home and School budget, and any extra funds raised will be put towards the cost of purchasing Promethean Boards for elementary classrooms. Promethean Boards are interactive learning tools that aid both teachers and students with cutting-edge learning models. The event raised a net amount of about $16,000. A very special thanks to event organizers, Darci Bauman and Melanie (Larson) O’Leary ‘99. They were assisted by Shannon Callies, Catherine Link, Carrie McGovern and Justyna Resch. We also appreciate all of the parent volunteers and the elementary teachers who spent their evening helping to create lasting memories for all the children. As one boy said while running around the track, “This is the best night of my life.”

Education of Serving Others Starts with Our Youngest Hawks Service is a big part of who we are in the Xavier system. It is a key part of the System mission statement after all. Our elementary campuses believe in carrying out that mission and providing even our youngest students the opportunity to engage in service. They strive to be service-oriented with their students by bringing assistance to members of the community, locally, and throughout the world. Along with seasonal causes, giving and service is incorporated during Advent, Catholic Schools Week and Lent. In addition to collections, prayer is also a component of the service to others. Every year brings new collections and service opportunities through input from the students, local and global news, requests from the community, and the Diocese. As a faith community, the staff strives to bring awareness to our students as they support these causes. This year, they will continue to support favorite causes and reach out to find new ones.

School Counselors = Positive Impact One of the unique opportunities that our Xavier Catholic Schools are blessed to offer elementary students and families is access to quality school counseling. Lindsay (Lonergan) Radloff ‘00 at our Marquette Street campus and Beth Ott at our McDonald Street campus make up the counseling department for 4K - 4th grade. The curriculum is based on the Wisconsin Comprehensive School Counseling Model and designed specifically for the Diocese of Green Bay. Each of our counselors prepares a variety of age-appropriate weekly lessons designed to teach each student valuable life lessons in a fun and creative way. Lessons focus on key areas such as academics, personal well-being, social development and career exploration along with covering important topics such as diversity, transitions, safety, and wellness. Individual class sessions use a variety of instructional methods, including story time, art project and game playing. Students often have the opportunity to lead discussions and utilize computers for research. In addition to weekly lessons, individual counselors meet with small groups as needed and work on various issues or concerns. Families are encouraged to reach out to the staff with any questions or concerns. If needed, our elementary students have access to a variety of outside resources that are used to refer families should a need arise. All our school counselors work closely together to be sure that each student grows academically and socially.

McDonald Street hosted their annual VIP Day on October 24th. Over 300 “VIPs” visited the campus joining their student(s) for Mass, cookies, tours of the school, and classroom Bingo. The students and their guests returned to church to end this special day with the entire congregation singing popular church music.

Dear Friends of Xavier, It is with deep appreciation that I write to you and thank you once again for your generosity and passion for the Xavier community and, in particular, the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation. Through the generous support of our community of learners, believers, and friends, our fiscal year 2018-2019 was truly a successful one. We finished the year with assets exceeding $7.2 million, which included over $317,000 in new gifts. This allowed us to extend over $532,000 of tuition assistance and ongoing support to the system. It is my privilege to announce that five new funds were established this year within the foundation, and it is an honor to share those individual stories with the Xavier community in the following pages. Our legacy circle continues to grow each year, and we are grateful to all those individuals and families who ensure our future success by creating lasting legacies. Music, Volunteerism, Entrepreneurship and Education Parents of Xavier Alumni Influence Four New Scholarships Robert and Mary Bodoh Make $25,000 Stock Donation to the Xavier Catholic Schools Foundation Robert E. Bodoh and his late wife, Mary, longtime Xavier supporters, made a significant gift to support the mission of the organization this past May. This contribution celebrates a lifetime of participation and support of Xavier High School. “We were delighted to make this gift,” said Robert. “Music played a big role in the Bodoh family.” Robert and Mary had three children at Xavier: Richard ‘77, Annie ‘79 and Craig ‘82. All were involved in Xavier’s music program. In fact, for many years, an organ they donated to the school was used in the old chapel. Robert and Mary had always planned to make a gift to benefit the Xavier Music Program. After Mary’s death in 2017, Robert finalized the gift. The gift established the Robert & Mary Bodoh Music Fund that will be used to support the music program. Future donors with similar interests may also donate to this fund. Robert is a retired regional vice president of Marsh & McLennan, international insurance brokers, currently residing at The Heritage. His daughter, Annie Sarver-Bodoh, a development professional from Saint Paul, MN, helped her father in facilitating the gift and is pictured with Robert and a photo of Mary (above). “We are grateful that Robert and Mary have remembered the Xavier Foundation in such a significant way,” said Deacon Ray DuBois, President of Xavier Catholic Schools. “This gift will support our great music program and help students explore their musical abilities.”

Service Scholarship Offered for Incoming Freshmen Volunteers extraordinaire – those words best describe Bob & Becky Weiske. When their eldest child of three entered Xavier in 1998 as a freshman, it didn’t take Bob and Becky long to make a huge impact on Xavier with their time and talent. By the fall of 2001, they had already been elected as Xavier Booster Club co-presidents along with Rick and Mary Vanderwyst, and their volunteerism to this day has still not concluded despite their youngest child having graduated from Xavier in 2005. Bob became a member of the football field painting crew. Becky assumed the role of concession stand manager. She orders all the product, often picks it up, and frequently grills some burgers and brats at home the day of a game to get a head start. She can be found at every home football, volleyball, basketball and wrestling event. In addition, Becky does all the ordering, pricing and displaying of apparel at our Hawks Nest clothing store. We fondly refer to Becky as our “professional volunteer.” This past year, the Weiskes generously established a scholarship that encourages community service and volunteerism. Named The Weiske Family Volunteer Scholarship Fund, this scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis starting in 2020 -2021 to an incoming Xavier High School freshman who has made a difference within the community by giving of themselves through their volunteer efforts. On behalf of all within the Xavier Community who have been and will continue to be impacted by the Weiske’s passion for Xavier and service, we extend a huge thank you.

College Scholarship Created for Seniors Interested in Business This past year, the Worachek Family, represented by Paul ‘84, Mike ‘85, and David ’92, established a new college scholarship for Xavier High School seniors who have displayed an ongoing interest in business and entrepreneurship. According to the family, “We felt that creating a scholarship program at Xavier was a great way to give back to the school that gave us a start to our lives.” Our father always instilled in us a sense of the entrepreneurial spirit. We hope to further foster that spirit in Xavier graduates. Starting a small business or working with and growing a start-up is the American Dream.” The Woracheks' passion for entrepreneurial spirit will give students a chance to pursue their passion for business in their careers via this scholarship. By creating this scholarship fund, the Worachek family can continue their father’s dedication and commitment to giving back to the community. The new scholarship fund will provide a $1,500 college scholarship annually, beginning with the 2020-2021 school year. Vice President of Advancement Bob Biebel believes that the scholarship is a wonderful opportunity to help deserving Xavier seniors with the cost of college. “Our Xavier Foundation has numerous scholarships for students attending Xavier Catholic Schools--this gift rewards them for their efforts after graduation.” Xavier is truly grateful for the generosity and leadership of the family and asks that you keep all of them, especially their dad Robert “Bob” Worachek (above), who passed away on September 25th, in your thoughts and prayers.

Lorenzi Family Fund to Honor Teachers Dena (Qastin) Lorenzi ‘85 and Peter Lorenzi wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of students and honor the teachers who had made a strong impact in Dena’s life as a proud Xavier Hawk. Some of Dena’s fondest memories of Xavier are from the English (Mr. Dennis Oudenhoven & Ms. Marnie Centen) and theater (Mr. Jim Romenesko) faculty, who helped her develop skills and lessons that served her well in her career and life. To give back to the Xavier community, Dena and Peter established The Qastin Family Fund, named to honor her parents, Jane & Abe – her mentors, and first teachers – and to recognize the passion, dedication, and tradition of the English Department and Theatre Program. Xavier is extremely honored and blessed by the Lorenzi’s generosity and willingness to share their gifts with others.

The XavierXperience is something that is hard to describe, but when you see or feel it, you just know you have witnessed something special. It can occur in small little ways, and in large profound ones. Below, are a father's recent experience while at a cross country meet, and a teacher's encounter at the middle school. "I can honestly say I simply walked over to film the Xavier Cross Country team prior to their invitational at St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary because I thought they were going to do a ‘rah rah’ team cheer. I thought it was admirable to see them pray instead, especially since it was team led. I remember thinking that this is something they must do often because no one was uncomfortable, and they seemed to have a very natural routine they followed: first were intentions, followed by an ‘Our Father’ and finally the traditional St. Francis Xavier ‘pray for us’ prayer. The other thing I remember and was touched by is that the intentions they offered were selfless. This was my recent #XavierXperience. This is my reason why." -Greg Strick '93 Alumnus and parent "We Believe In Human Kindness: A poster I saw on the Magnolia's Instagram this Summer, turned into an entire school project. When I first saw the post, I thought it would be a great "first day of class" activity. Our health class is called "Life is the Future," so this activity was truly fitting in advocating for human kindness. As we hung the project around school, we noticed that students and staff enjoyed picking their random act of kindness tab. They questioned, can we hang more? Can we grow this project? Meanwhile, I started collecting the half sheets that were completed and wanted to show my students that what we are doing matters, if we made one person's day, it mattered. Not even in my wildest dreams did I see this small activity grow to what it has become. Thanks to our students, we have now reached over 1000 random acts of kindness in two and a half months. All it takes is ONE act of kindness that can change a person's day. If you can be anything, be kind."
