Fall sports, the high school musical, and activities at every level are complete and we gear up for 2019. Our high school seniors begin that anticipatory period of making firm decisions about what next year will bring. As I speak with current and past Xavier families, there is one word that always seems to come up in the conversation: community. That’s a feeling of fellowship with others. It comes from sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. That spirit is reflected in our mission statement, that we are a Christ-centered community dedicated to faith, academics, engagement, and individual growth.

The relationships we build within our Xavier community are deep and long-lasting. I hope you’ll appreciate the article on page 24-25 that highlights nine of our Xavier families, whose dads and daughters got together for a camping trip in 2004 and are currently planning for their 15th consecutive trip in June! These young women have long since graduated from high school but continue those relationships they began in our elementary school. You’ll also read about new details of our high school Scholars Program, the brand-new faith-based mural in our middle school cafeteria, and the STEM curriculum in our elementary schools. We’ve recently put the finishing touches on our 2018 – 2023 Strategic Plan, and you can gain insight into the way our Xavier community will continue to grow as we move deeper into the 21st century. Alumni Updates 1960s Chris (Baum) and Wade Van Ryzin ’66 were recently featured as Hometown Heroes on WFRV TV. Chris was featured for her work and pamphlet on “Veteran Toxins and Environmental Exposures”. To receive a copy of the pamplet, email your request to veterantoxinscvr@gmail.com. 1970s In recognition of his global reputation for quantitative analysis, intelligent manufacturing, and statistical process control in the forest industries, Timothy Young ’74 has been awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin– Madison. It is the highest honor bestowed by the college. Young earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin in Natural Resources and Forest Economics and PhD from the University of Tennessee. In 2013 Young was named a Fulbright Scholar for an exchange in Austria. He was named to a five-year term as a Fulbright specialist in agricultural statistics.

2000s Upon graduation from Marquette University in 2012, Ryan Prickette ’08, began working for Rockwell Automation. His latest position will relocate his family to Hartford, WI. This will be Prickette’s sixth move for work and third with his family. Prickette and his wife, Ashley, have two boys, Jacob (2) and Henrik (10 mos.), and a dog, Jordy. Patrick DuBois ’09 is an associate with Jones Day in Chicago, where he is a member of the Business and Tort Litigation Group. Prior to joining the firm in 2017, he was a law clerk for Judge William Griesbach of the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Wisconsin. Anna Roeder Knighton ‘09 graduated from UW Madison and is a paralegal at the McDonald’s headquarters in Chicago. She recently completed the 2018 Chicago marathon. Ryan Powley '09 is a leadership development consultant based in Canton, Ohio (home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame!). After completing undergraduate studies at St. Olaf College in 2013 and working for two years, he graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato in May 2017 with a master’s degree in industrial-organizational psychology. In his current role, he helps leaders across industries leverage their strengths and overcome their weaknesses. Although his work takes him all over the country, he always makes it back to Appleton for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Alumni Updates 2000s American Film Institute Producing Fellow, Thayer Juergens ’09, attended Case Western Reserve University for Theatre, English, and Political Science. After graduation, Juergens moved to New York City where he worked for NBC Universal (at the Oxygen Channel), Guy Walks Into a Bar Productions (made Elf), A&E (coordinated onair marketing for the History Channel), and two years at HBO where he worked on national marketing campaigns for Game of Thrones, Westworld, Silicon Valley, True Detective, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. He’s now in Los Angeles attending the American Film Institute Conservatory for his master's degree in Producing. He’s produced four short films ranging from farce and mockumentary to procedural and horror. During his first year he worked for Cotty Chubb (producer of The Crow) and for Sam Raimi at Ghosthouse Pictures. He’s currently producing his thesis film called Cactus Blossom (cactusblossomfilm.com). Having caught the travel bug from Herr (Pfefferle), Natalie (Baus) Steenberg ’09 has traveled to ten countries since graduating from Xavier. Steenberg graduated from UW Madison with a degree in special education and taught in Los Angeles for two years. She moved to Chicago, married, and began a new career in association management.

2010s Sarah (Pappas) McCauley ’10 (photo, left), has made her dream of becoming a mental health therapist come true. She attended the University of St. Thomas where she studied psychology and family studies, participated in D3 women's golf for two years, sang in the nationally ranked choir, was published, presented at national psychology conferences, and made lifelong friends. McCauley married and finished her master's degree of Marriage and Family Therapy at Saint Mary's University, Minneapolis, in 2017 while expecting their first child, a daughter. McCauley currently lives/practices east of St Paul, MN and is working to provide accessible mental health support to the whole family dynamic facing chronic health concerns. Bethany Blank '11 (photo, right), married Drew Van Asten on July 7, 2017 and they are expecting their first child early this spring. She is currently working as the Assistant Laboratory Manager of the Research and Development department at PreventionGenetics in Marshfield, WI. Mackenzie Eagan ’12 is working toward her goal of becoming a missionary overseas. She currently works for Papa Murphy's and the Green Bay Packers. In addition, she is working to be an advocate for mental health issues. Her goal is to share her story with local schools with the message that working on one’s own mental health can better each student for his/her future.

Alumni Updates 2010s Courtney Gear ‘12 (photo, right) married Darren Lillard at Sacred Heart Parish, Appleton on August 4, 2018. Nicole Meyer ’12 is in her second year of the Clinical Psychology Master of Arts program at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. Meyer has been awarded a graduate assistantship for the program and recommended by the director to apply for a Ph.D. program in neuropsychology. Meyer participated in practicum placements at Aurora St. Luke’s Neurological Assessment and the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Management Center. In this placement, she assesses mindfulness-based biofeedback effects with patients experiencing chronic pain. She intends to use this practicum as a foundation for her master's thesis and obtain biofeedback board certification. A graduate assistant at Cardinal Stritch University, she received the American Psychological Association (APA) Graduate Student Ambassador position for the clinical psychology program at Cardinal Stritch. Robert (Bobby) Ramlet ‘12 (photo, left) joined the Xavier football coaching staff and serves as a mentor to some of the students. His passion for coaching is evident, now coaching at the school that provided him lessons in the classroom and in life. Ramlet is a sales representative at J.J. Keller and Associates and was married this past August. After graduating from Loras College in 2017, Jessica Dickhut ‘13, spent a year volunteering, including coaching the Xavier boys' tennis team. Dickhut currently works for the Green Bay Packers as the Johnsonville Tailgate Village Game Entertainment Intern. She is responsible for coordinating parking lot events at Lambeau Field, including the Johnsonville Tailgate Village, the Fan Walkway, TundraLine, the Tailgater Bands, and more. In addition, she assists with the flyovers and halftime performances. Tarynn Theilig ‘13 and Brady Johnson ’13 (photo, right) Xavier High School sweethearts, were married in July. The two met at St. Joe’s (now Xavier Middle School) when they shared the same 7th grade homeroom. Tarynn graduated in 2017 with Latin Honors and a degree in Neuroscience from the University of St. Thomas where she was also an All-American goalkeeper for the UST women’s soccer team. Brady graduated with Latin Honors and a degree in Psychology with a minor in Kinesiology from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

Alumni Updates A May 2018 graduate of Syracuse University, Kailyn Sitter ’14, earned degrees in biology and anthropology. Sitter now lives in Boston and is a master’s degree student in Medical Anthropology at Boston University. UW-Stevens Point senior Meghan Wagner ’14, received $5,000 to create a 30-foot stone and glass mosaic labyrinth through the 2018 Carlsten Gallery Student Advisory Committee Public Art Symposium. The labyrinth was installed in August at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Treehaven field station in Tomahawk. She completed a full-time externship at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y. Hannah Wierzbinski ’15 (photo, right) completed her first Ironman Wisconsin in Madison on September 9, 2018. A love for public service and advocating for the voiceless enabled Andrew Bailey ’16 to pursue an opportunity to intern in Washington DC in the United States Senate. His work there included constituent relations, writing memos on pieces of legislation, researching topics such as trade and immigration policy, and attending committee hearings and briefings on Capitol Hill. Back at school, Bailey is currently serving as student body president at The College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minnesota. Galvin Salvia ’16 (photo, left) has been making trips to Rosharon, TX, to rebuild houses destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. He and other students from UW-Lacrosse have been working with Rebuild South Texas, which is doing amazing work to help both spread the Gospel and rebuild houses. Salvia has planned and organized three mission trips and still marvels how God is doing incredible things in his life. Mikayla Sip ’16 will graduate from Fox Valley Technical College in May 2019 with her associates degree in Early Childhood Education. She then hopes to go to the University of Wisconsin Green Bay to earn a bachelor’s degree. In addition to attending school full-time, Sip works full-time at a daycare and moved to Green Bay last September. Badgers with a Heart (BWAH) has named Cassandra (Casey) Bunks ’17 its new president. Badgers with a Heart is a UW Madison campus organization that assists the Autism Society of South Central Wisconsin, of which Casey is now a member of the Executive Board of Directors.

Hall of Honors Four deserving individuals were honored at the Hall of Honors Ceremony during an all-high school assembly as part of homecoming week festivities. The Hall of Honors recognizes people who are Catholic Christian role models for our present and future students. We congratulate these wonderful members of the Xavier community and thank them for using their gifts and talents to make a positive difference in the world.

Distinguished Alumni:

Doug Simon ’87, is the president of the U.S. Division of Agropur, Inc. Under Simon’s leadership and vision, Agropur has become one of the largest cheese and dairy companies in the United States. Simon was elected president of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association and serves several national and international cheese associations as well as local youth organization boards. Sister Mary Ann Spanjers ‘77, a Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity, has lived a life of service all over the world, including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Arizona. She was blessed with ten years of missionary work in Lima, Peru and Andes mountain villages. In addition, Sister Mary Ann eaches out to immigrants and refugees near the Mexican border while also teaching theology at San Miguel Cristo Rey High School in Tucson, AZ. For her work in Peru, especially with economically poor state school students, Sister Mary Ann has received several service awards. Captain Michael L. Weeldreyer, USN ’91 has served our country for the past twenty three years and has received numerous Navy commendations. Michael Weeldreyer Sister Mary Ann Spanjers Doug Simon Jim Romenesko Captain Weeldreyer currently serves as an Operations Research Analyst in the Secretary of Defense’s Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation (CAPE) Directorate. He previously served within the Chief of Naval Operations Surface Warfare Division. He served as Commanding Officer in USS Russell (DDG 59) and as Commanding and Executive Officer in USS Halsey (DDG 97). His demanding job often took him away from home, but he is now able to serve as a basketball coach, baseball coach, and flag football coach for his sons’ teams.

Honorary Alumnus:

Jim Romenesko has been directing the main stage shows at Xavier for the past twenty one years. During his time at Xavier, Romenesko has directed more than ninety productions and expanded Xavier fine arts offerings. In addition to school productions, Romenesko directed Christmas Stars for the past twenty years, and, in 2008, led a team in developing “The Northeast Wisconsin Passion Play”. In 2014, he brought yet another unique program to Xavier, the Xavier Theatre Academy, uniting younger performers for a fully-staged production each summer. Romenesko feels blessed to have found his vocation at Xavier and to have the honor of working with such dedicated, generous, loving, and talented people. xaviercatholicschools.org

DOING IT THE OLD FASHIONED WAY If you are a Wisconsin sports fan, it is all about the Packers, Brewers, Badgers and Bucks. When it comes to food, it is a Friday night fish fry, a juicy brat, fresh cheese curds, or a few Fat Tuesday paczki. However, when it comes to cocktails you can forget about the Hot Toddy, the Tom and Jerry, or the Irish coffee. The only truly authentic Wisconsin drink is the Old Fashioned. Anything else simply doesn’t match up! For Xavier alumni parents, Gary and Judy Ver Voort, when numerous Old Fashioneds didn’t pass their personal taste test, it was time for action. In 2001, not happy with the consistency of the Old Fashioned they were being served, Gary set out to create his own mixture in hopes of discovering the ideal drink to quench a Wisconsinite’s thirst. Using family and friends as the test market, Gary concocted the perfect mix. As he described it, it was sweet, but not too sweet. That taste proved to be just right, and the word spread quickly. Before long the Ver Voort’s were inundated with requests for larger and larger quantities of their homemade mix. It got so intense that they couldn’t keep up with the demand and the cost of production. It was then that Gary turned to Troy Landwehr '94, owner of Kerrigan Brothers Winery in Kaukauna, to help produce larger, more cost-efficient batches of the secret recipe.

What we like about owning Gary’s is that fellow classmates that we haven’t heard from in more than twenty years have reached out to us.

Before long, Gary was in business and distributing at 15 different locations in the Appleton area. The business continued to operate until 2016 when the Ver Voorts made the difficult decision to sell. Thinking that his sons were too busy with their full time jobs to purchase the company Gary kept his decision quiet. It wasn’t until a family wedding that the sons first heard the news and immediately became interested in following in their father’s footsteps.

After running a few business scenarios and feeling the entrepreneuriel urge; Jim ’92, Paul '94, and Mark ’97, along with family friend Seth Ponschock ’94, officially became the new owners of Gary’s Old Fashioned Mix. Fast forward 18 months to 2019, and Gary’s is currently being sold in over 500 locations and quickly becoming a household staple on the shelves of true Old Fashioned connoisseurs across the state. In fact, the rapid success of the company knows “no borders” and bottles of the mix are being shipped to 49 states and even across the pond via Amazon to Old Fashioned lovers in Spain. There is even a report that a bottle has been shipped to the US Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. This summer, the team has expanded their product line with the addition of “Classic Muddled,” flavored with a tint of orange, to the mix. If you ask the owners what is the key to their success, they are quick to say family and friendships. “What we like about owning Gary’s is that fellow classmates that we haven’t heard from in more than twenty years have reached out to us” remarked Paul. As is often the case, the real secret to success is the amount of hard work and dedication the Xavier graduates have put into their passion, including packing individual orders from their homes in the early days and learning the ins and outs of the business world. Despite the challenges of working with food scientists, making labeling decisions, and handling distribution, the business continues to grow. What’s next? Jim, the elder statesmen of the family believes the “sky is the limit,” while Mark, the youngest, has his sights set on “global domination.” Whatever lies ahead, these Xavier business owners are having fun, honoring Gary's legacy and enjoying spending time together. So whether you’re a young hipster looking for a craft cocktail, a traditionalist at the local supper club, or a snowbird heading south for the winter, one thing is perfectly clear. Gary’s Old Fashioned Mix is never too far from reach or from one’s lips… and that is sweet, but not too sweet!

High School Athletic Highlights

Xavier girls golf enjoyed their best season in school history finishing as WIAA Division 2 State Runners-up. Senior Clair Phakamad, an international student from Thailand, finished as the WIAA Division 2 State individual champion, which is the first individual state golf champion in school history.

The Xavier girls tennis team captured the conference championship for the 6th consecutive year. Sophomore Erika Curtin qualified for state this year as our #1 singles player. Sophomore Anne Marie Knabe qualified for tennis state for the first time as a singles player. Senior Lily Anne Van Ye qualified as a doubles player for the second year in a row. Junior Ellie Macksood qualified for state this year as a doubles player.

Junior Annie Higgins qualified for state cross country for the third consecutive year and has been on the state podium all three years. This year she finished in seventh place. In his first year qualifying for state cross country, junior Mitchell Lambert finished in 35th place out of a field of 152 runners.

Xavier Scholars Program Much is made in the modern world about being accepted into a college or university. Xavier students have a proven track record of both gaining acceptance to and succeeding at their chosen universities. Still, the faculty and administration are always searching for ways to expand the academic preparation and to tailor a student’s four years to meet specific interests. What can be done to help a student stand out among his peers when it comes time to apply to college, to get a job at the university, and to stoke the flames of ingenuity and analysis that will carry a student to career success? At Xavier, the newest offering in pursuit of those goals is the Xavier Scholars Program. The Xavier Scholars Program affords all students the opportunity to engage the curriculum in one academic arena on an individual level, designing a unique program with a faculty mentor and completing the educational experience. Common components of the scholars program include professional literature review, individual and small group presentations, special research, and community partnerships. Students who complete the Xavier Scholars Program earn a medal named after the patron saint of their field. Xavier Science Scholars are engaging in a multi-year program of progressive rigor. During the first year, each student will select an area of focus and engage with scientific journals and articles in order to prepare a presentation on the current status of the scientific understanding of the topic. In the second year, the student will work with a faculty mentor to design innovative research and document the findings in written and verbal forms. Finally, in the student’s third year, the student will be paired with a community partner who can help the student continue to grow in research and understanding as well as connect the student to new opportunities to learn and experience. Junior Miles Kubicki (photo right) describes his desire to become a Science Scholar by saying “I love learning about research and new developments, so this program meets my skills and prepares me for a career in the engineering field.”

Junior Kate Popelka (photo right) applied to be a Xavier English Scholar last spring. “My English teachers have truly inspired my love for literature,” says Popelka. After being accepted as an English Scholar, she spent two weeks of her summer vacation in England, where she focused on studying literature and the connection between culture and writing. She aspires to be an English teacher and finds the Xavier Scholars Program to be the perfect avenue to cultivate her passion. “I really want to continue to grow my love for literature and the Scholars Program is the perfect way for me to do that.” Principal Mike Mauthe expressed excitement about the Xavier Scholars Program. “We have so many talented and engaged young people who are looking for their own path. A school our size is often limited by just how many courses we can offer. Now the student can find her own way. Imagine being able to write a college application essay about the research project you’ve been engaged in for three years, with a professional level literature review, a full synopsis of your research, and letters of recommendation from your faculty mentor and a local professor or professional in the field. That is the level of rigor that Xavier students are capable of and we are so excited to see them present their work in such a vast array of fields of study.” Alumni and local professionals are invited to participate in the Xavier Scholars Program as well. As students reach the third stage of their program, many will need community mentors and partners. While local professionals are most convenient, technology allows alumni from across the nation and around the world to serve in the capacity if interested. HIGH SCHOOL

Apple Pie Fundraiser Each fall the Xavier High School culinary classes participated in a pie-making program that benefits the Outagamie Pre-Action Network. Typically, one class makes about 40 Dutch apple pies. Catalpa Health provides pie crusts and the class finds great deals on apples at the perfect time of year. Xavier students are living out the mission of the school with their support of this worthwhile fundraiser each fall. Through decades of research, the Pre-Action Network has found that prevention programs do work. They focus on reducing risk factors and enhancing protective factors for youth in Outagamie County. Students loved being able to help out a great cause and have fun doing it at the same time. One student commented, “I don’t usually like apple pie, but this is delicious.”

Hack Club What is your superpower? Coding is the superpower of students who participate in the Hack Club. Hack Club is a student led organization that provides opportunities for students to problem solve. This year, students will be building a mini computer with a Raspberry Pi and participating in local Hackathons. Students can also extend their superpowers within Computer Science through the course offerings at the high school. Introduction to Computer Science, Web Page Design, and AP Computer Science Principles provide students experience programming using Scratch, MIT App Inventor, Java, and Python. The Hack Club and the computer science courses help students to build the skills of problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.

Koinonia

In To Teach As Jesus Did, the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops declared that “through education the Church seeks to prepare its members to proclaim the Good News and to translate this proclamation into action.” At Xavier, that preparation takes many forms: classroom instruction, participation in the sacraments and parish life, a commitment to service, and a variety of retreat experiences. In recent years, the Xavier students developed a new tradition for growing in their faith, the Koinonia program. Koinonia is a Greek word for fellowship, specifically fellowship in the Christian faith. Each week, small groups of young men or young women meet with a faculty adviser to share life stories, discuss contemporary issues, enjoy each other’s company, and pray with and for one another. These groups of young people remain intact throughout a student’s four years, so that the freshman grows from newcomer to established veteran to group leader. “K-group” meetings are preceded by an all school convocation. These prayer services are prepared and led by a new Koinonia group each week. Themes like “Honoring Veterans,” “The Rosary and Respecting Life,” and “Serving One Another” make each convocation meaningful.

During the first three years of the program, groups have begun to form their own identities and traditions. Students can frequently be spotted wearing sweatshirts or jackets featuring group names such as Genesisters and Brosciples. Each group has its own patron saint, Bible verse, and many have selected a charity or community organization to support. The men of Alpha Omega Frank served at a parish Fish Fry (see picture below). The Brotherhood of Saints Peter and Andrew invited the young women of Kappa Delta Fish to Friday morning Mass and joined them for a bonfire one evening. Other groups have planned activities which are both social and practical. The women of Gospel Girls invited their mothers to a women’s empowerment class (see picture above). Koinonia groups are just another way that Xavier seeks to prepare young people for lives of service to the Church and the world. Senior Quinn Zubella says Koinonia is “a great way to talk about how to live out our faith in school and in the community.” As the program continues to expand, the students and staff continue to seek opportunities to grow in love for God and one another.

A Father/Daughter Community of Learners, Believers, and Friends!

What began in 2004 as a simple weekend camping trip for five dads and their 4th grade daughters quickly expanded to nine over the next couple of years. This summer, those same nine girls from Catholic Central will celebrate their 15th summer camping excursion with their dads at Vista Royale in Bancroft. The friendships, for the girls as well as the dads, are lifelong! C4 (Catholic Central Camping Committee) originally was a way to relax at the end of the school year. But what started as a simple camping trip “gave me a second family for life” said one of the girls. It’s a unique group. Each girl has a very different personality, and some former classmates are surprised to hear that they’ve remained friends over the years. “I guess there’s something about piling into the same tent, camper, or cabin each year that solidifies even the most unlikely of friendships,” said Kristin Cherrier. “No matter what paths we take in life, even if we don’t see each other all year, we always manage to pick up where we left off.” And a winding path it’s been. The girls first met at Catholic Central Elementary School at the turn of the millennium. Eight graduated from Xavier High School in 2014 and one from Appleton West (see picture) and then scattered to various colleges around the state and country. Four have gravitated to the nursing field; one each to chemical engineering, clinical psychology, clinical lab science, marketing, and law. The common thread for all of them is C4. Over the years there have been lots of laughs… and not just a few tribulations. One dad recalled the summer of the “lazy river” experience, the morning the group woke up after a night of torrential rains and found their tents flooded. There was “5 o’clock Charlie,” the crop duster who buzzed the campsite on a regular basis, and always at the same time. And then there were traditional games of “dizzy bat” that sent more than one dad perilously close to the campfire. 24

Yet the tribulations were far outweighed by the good times. Bill Conley’s “Mountain Man” breakfast is legendary, as are Dennis LeMere’s Saturday night fajitas. There were countless games of Texas Hold ‘Em. The trip to King Kone Ice Cream was an annual event, and every year they made the trek to the Almond Tater Toot Parade, featuring the Wisconsin Spudmobile. On weekends they celebrated Sunday Mass at St. Paul’s Parish in Plainfield. This annual four-day celebration of friendship shows no sign of slowing down. One of the girls summed it up this way: “I could fill this magazine with words of appreciation and love for not only my dad, but the eight other dads who kept this tradition alive. It cannot be easy watching nine girls change, grow, and mature throughout the years, but somehow they have done it…So THANK YOU to my second family – I cannot wait for another 15 years of fun!”

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Leaving a Colorful Mark

A beautiful change is happening at Xavier Middle School! Xavier parent Anne Douglas, assisted middle school students in the process of painting a striking mural in the school cafeteria. The gift of Anne’s talent is not new to the middle school. Over the past few years, she has completed various chalk drawings of the students’ literary favorites for the library. The facilities committee was enthralled by these pieces of art, so last year they approached her to do something more permanent. The committee met to come up with an idea for the south wall of the cafeteria. Anne’s vision of Christ at the table was a perfect fit. It shows Jesus, with open arms, welcoming those present to the table. He is surrounded by God’s creation and various symbols of our faith. Phrases such as “I am the Bread of Life”, and “Give us this

day our daily bread.” are woven throughout the scene. The mural is filled with vibrant colors and phrases that welcome the students to this space. It is another expression of our Catholic faith for the students and our community to experience daily. Anne began the mural in September, and the students have been able to watch it come to life. Anne has also been giving the kids the opportunity to be a part of this special project. She works with a few students at a time as they each paint a portion of the stained glass windows in the mural. When completed, this beautiful work of art will be enjoyed by many for years to come. It will welcome the middle school students every day at lunch in addition to enhancing the system celebrations held there. We are so fortunate to have Anne sharing her faith and talents with us in this way!

Faith in Middle School Every day at Xavier Middle School, students, faculty, and staff create a faith filled environment that offers academic, social, and extracurricular experiences in the Catholic tradition and fosters personal relationships with Jesus. From the start of every day, when an 8th grade student leads the school in prayer over the P.A. system, middle school students place themselves in the loving care of God to offer praise, give thanks or ask for intentions and invoke the intercession of St. Francis Xavier. During a typical day, students experience prayer, learn about their Catholic faith, and have opportunities to grow in their faith. Beginning with morning prayer in homeroom, students attend religion classes with opportunities for prayer and faith sharing. In other classes students pray together and offer prayers before lunch. The day ends with individual classroom prayers.

Each grade celebrates its own faith experiences. 5th grade attends a day retreat Camp Tekakwitha and presents the Living Stations for our Xavier community and others. 6th grade attends a three day fall camp, a 6th and 9th grade retreat, and a trip to Holy Hill. 7th grade visits the Shrine of our Lady of Good Help, attends an Advent retreat and participates in a 3 three day winter camp. 8th grade attends the Holy Name Cathedral and St. Norbert Abbey; listens to vocation speakers; attends a graduation retreat; and serves Feeding America, Bethesda Thrift Store and Riverview Gardens.

Student-planned Mass is celebrated weekly. The sacrament of reconciliation is provided two times a year, during Advent and Lent. Additionally, students pray in Eucharistic Adoration four times a year. All students are invited to be a part of Campus Ministry Club which offers additional prayer and service opportunities such as Morning Prayer at St. Norbert Abbey and volunteering at St. Joe’s Food Program. In 2017, Xavier Middle School celebrated ADVENT DAY. This day of celebration began with service at each grade level in which students donated or created dog toys, blankets, cards, rosaries. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception was celebrated at Mass. Following lunch, students and staff traveled to the PAC for an Advent Music Concert. This day of sacrament, service, prayer and fun highlights us as a Catholic middle school of ministry discipleship. During the 2018 Catholic Schools Week a penny war raised over $3,000 for Homeless Connections. A grateful representative from the center came to school and gave a short presentation on the reality of homelessness in the Fox Valley and promoted advocacy and our students’ continued support.

Through catechesis, prayer, sacraments and service, Xavier Middle School students experience what it means to be a disciple of Christ at this particular stage of their life journey. As a school community, we meet them where they are and walk with them as they grow deeper in their faith. Want a sign that all we do is working? MIDDLE SCHOOL

Science Lab Enhancements About five years ago, science students at Xavier Middle School sat at desks with chairs attached to them. When it was time to perform a lab, students pushed together these desks of uneven height and worked at the countertops around the perimeter of the classroom. The science teacher could walk around the island of desks to assess students during the lab, but had to peer over the shoulders of the lab teams of 3-4 students around the perimeter. Although not the ideal science lab conditions, teachers and students made the most of what we had. A couple of years later, the science teachers realized the need for tables to optimize lab team collaboration, and they began to get creative with classroom furniture. Using science budget money, they were able to purchase some metal tables for some of the classrooms, and found some old wooden lab stations in the basements of other facilities. Mrs. Goulet’s classroom was affectionately referred to as the “Redneck Science Lab", as her classroom was pieced together with two types of old wooden lab tables and retired two-sided library bookshelves, whose shelves were removed on one side so that they could be repurposed as lab tables. Over the past four years, the science department enhanced the science experience for students at all grade levels by adding a hands-on inquiry-based learning curriculum that is aligned with the Next Generation Standards. In addition, all students receive Project Lead the Way engineering lessons for a quarter of the year, as part of their science curriculum. This year, 7th and 8th grade students arrived at school to find that, over the summer, their science classrooms were transformed into state-of-the art labs, thanks to a very generous donation to the science department! The science teachers and administration worked with Diversified Wood Products to develop a floor plan for two showcase classrooms of furniture that would meet the needs of our students and teachers. The freshly painted 7th grade science classroom now has beautiful oak cabinets around its perimeter, with glass faces on some of the upper units; chemical resistant tops on the lower cabinets; new sinks; chemical resistant tops and castors on all of the 14 student tables; comfortable student chairs; a large bookshelf; student cubbies; a glassware dry rack; a teacher demonstration station on wheels; and a teacher desk and wardrobe.

The 8th grade science classroom has many new features, the cabinets are maple with a different color stain; one of the furniture pieces is a bookshelf with a slide magnetic whiteboard face; and the student tables and chairs are both easily adjustable in height.

Having tables on wheels provides opportunities for tables to move to create a larger lab space for groups of four students; lab stations near a sink; or two to a table with space between tables for quizzes or tests. Homecom The 2018 Xavier Homecoming kicked off this year with a parade, which ran from Pierce Park to Xavier High School. The parade included floats from all four campuses, the marching band, the Homecoming king and queen, along with some of our Appleton parish priests. Many students, family, friends and alumni cheered on the Xavier Hawks football team as they battled against the Fox Valley Lutheran Foxes. The celebration continued with a dance at Xavier High School on Saturday night.

Inaugural Homecoming 5k Fun Run and Dog Walk

Over 180 students, parents, and staff members joined their four-legged friends to celebrate Xavier's first annual 5k Fun Run and Dog Walk. Participants chose from a 1-mile, 2-mile, or 5k route, all starting on the Xavier track and winding through the surrounding neighborhoods. All entry fees and non-perishable food items were donated to the St. Joseph Food Program. The event, sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, was a dog-gone good time! Congratulations to all of our finishers!

What’s happening ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Outdoor Learning Space McDonald Street For St. Thomas More Elementary School graduate Carrie Van Zeeland, the memory of outdoor science class always stood out. So whenever she walked the existing school grounds, she felt something was missing. The years had turned that once memorable space into overgrown woods. Rather than just letting things be, she decided to talk to the parish about resurrecting the idea of an outdoor learning environment. After considerable discussion between the parish and school, the idea became reality and on August 25, 2018 a new outdoor classroom was completed. The project was a true team effort and featured the collaborative work of a number of different groups. The actual construction was done by Boy Scout Troop 9 under the leadership of Sam Wudin '21, for his Eagle Scout project. The project included clearing the space, putting down gravel for paths and in the actual classroom, digging and placement of educational posts, and cutting and placement of log benches.

friends. Mrs. Meyer’s first grade class took advantage of the classroom by releasing three beautiful monarch butterflies that the class had raised from caterpillars. She describes the classroom as an amazing space, and plans on spending time in religion class there surrounded by God’s creation. We are happy to report that Carrie’s favorite elementary school moments are now being shared with others. After spending a class period in the new space a first grader was overheard saying “Why can’t we do everything out here?” Some memories are meant to last forever!

Our elementary classes truly make the most of this space. Recently, Mrs. Ahlborg’s kindergarten class used the area to learn about the Creation Story using their senses to appreciate the many things God created for us. Most of all they thanked God for creating us and for family and

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Marquette Street Mrs. Schmitz’s three year old preschool class is learning their faith in a new way this year. In partnership with Mrs Erin Buchholtz, St. Pius X faith formation director, and St. Pius X parish the preschoolers are learning about the Roman Catholic faith utilizing the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd curriculum. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the Church, sacraments, Catholic traditions, and Church teachings. Children gather in the “atrium,” a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials that they use to help fall in love with God by themselves. The role of the catechist (teacher) is to prepare the atrium and present passages of Scripture which call forth the child’s innate desire to draw near to God. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd came about through the work of two Roman Catholic lay women, Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi in Rome in 1954. It has since been taught in 37 countries and there are more than 1,250 atria in the United States alone. Carolyn Kohlhaas, a nationally recognized CGS Formation Leader, states “The image of Christ as the Good Shepherd who loves his sheep and gives everything He is for them forms the center of the young child’s relationship with God. The Good Shepherd knows His sheep and knows them by their name. The child comes to discover who the Shepherd is and who they are-His child. This blossoming relationship these same children are exposed to small isolated moments of the Mass. They hold a small chalice, learn to name each of the vestments that the priest wears and wonder at what occurs at specific moments of the liturgy. Their relationship with the Good Shepherd is nurtured in such a way that they are preparing to live the fullness of the life of the Catholic Church though liturgy and the sacraments. They begin to realize the depth of Christ’s love for us, as it is revealed through these sacraments, particularly the Eucharist.” St. Pius X hosted a week long Level One-A CGS training this past July and is planning on having Carolyn Kohlhaas back next summer for the Level One-B CGS training next summer. Mrs. Schmitz says “I am so blessed to have been able to attend the training this summer. Having an atrium in our parish and being able to have my PK3 class learn their Catholic faith in this age appropriate way has been a remarkable experience this year."

That is a question we have all been asked and have been asking students for years and years. The most common answer generally has something to do with our parents’ professions, what would make a great Halloween costume, or something we heard other children talk about on the playground. Studies, in fact, indicate that children develop ideas about their interest and abilities as early as second grade, based on what they have been exposed to at home or at school. In recent years, Xavier has partnered with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to bring hands-on, project-based and problem solving curriculum into our elementary campuses. The goal is to help students develop confidence, build knowledge and skills, and expose them to new career paths. For over twenty years, PLTW has been a leader in STEM based educational curriculum providing both students and teachers numerous opportunities for growth and opening up new worlds. How does it work you ask?

For a third grader, it starts with a fictional story that describes a design problem involving rescuing a trapped zoo animal, (not exactly your typical “Once upon a time” story). To solve the problem, students plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. In the process, they are learning about stability and about how we experience pushes and pulls, gravity, and friction in our daily lives. They also learn about the forces of magnets and have the opportunity to build simple and complex machines. A trip to the amusement park is the backdrop for fourth graders as they explore the attraction of riding the bumper cars. We all remember those days. Does it hurt when you crash? What keeps people from being thrown out of the car? From these questions, students explore how mechanisms change energy by transferring direction, speed, type of movement, and force. In addition, they learn to work with each other’s strengths to maneuver through the planning, building and testing of their vehicle carrying an egg down a ramp. These hands-on, real life educational experiences not only engage and empower students to think critically but help develop transferable skills at an early age. Teachers are quick to note that students come into class full of energy and ready to learn. With an estimated 1.2 million unfilled STEM jobs available in the United States in 2018, it is never too early to start preparing Xavier students for the future, while allowing them to discover their individual God given talents. So the next time a student is asked the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Don’t be surprised to hear your son, daughter, or grandchild say, “I want to be an aerospace engineer, a computer programmer, or a biomedical researcher.”

Alumni in the Arts Connor Pietrzak –

From Xavier Drum Major to National Broadway Tour It starts with choosing a musical instrument to play in elementary school, then lessons in middle school. Parents cringe through the squeaky notes, endless practicing, middle school concerts that end in hugs, tears, and the inevitable videotape. Then, in high school, with the right mentor, the young musician receives the opportunity to become the best musician he or she can be, and maybe even live out their dream. For Connor Pietrzak ’13, that instrument was a trumpet and the mentor was Mrs. Kate Hardt. And the dream? Connor is currently playing trumpet on the first national Broadway tour of “Miss Saigon,” a long-term professional engagement for which he will be playing multiple shows a week in cities throughout the United States and Canada. In an article published on the UW-Eau Claire website, Connor said, “I am so excited to live my dream. I love playing in pit orchestra and to play this book specifically, is very special. A career path like this is inevitably filled with uncertainty and lots of people who tell you how impossible it is to make a living playing trumpet.” “I was fortunate to be (at Xavier High School) for four years,” he said. “It was a place that encouraged me to develop my talents and use them to serve God, rather than dismissing my gifts to go down a safer, more stable road.” Connor credits Mrs. Hardt as one of his greatest mentors who encouraged him to follow what he loved to do. “She met me where I was at the time – a squirrely little 15-year old kid, and she made me believe I could pursue the trumpet. Mrs. Hardt, along with the many opportunities to perform at Xavier, like the fall musicals, KABOOM, various jazz ensemble concerts and festivals, and guest artist experiences added up to a rich musical high school experience that few can rival.” As part of the “Miss Saigon” ensemble, he will play eight shows a week. “In the coming years, I’ll have performed in nearly every state and we never play in a city for less than a week, so I’ll have time to do a little exploring.” During a scheduled break from “Miss Saigon,” Connor is a member of the pit orchestra with the national tour of “ELF the Musical.” As he travels the country with the tour, he is completing coursework online so that he can graduate this month from UW-Eau Claire.

Adam Dyer –

Xavier's own Spiderman What began innocently enough as an 8th grade class field trip from St. Joseph Middle School to Xavier High School to see the annual theatre performance turned out to be much more for Adam Dyer ’99. Little did he know that 13 years later he would be flying across a Broadway stage wearing both the mask and spandex suit of the one and only ‘Spider Man’ and thrilling audiences with his high wire aerial moves. Adam credits that field trip as well as the influence of Xavier theatre directors Peter Leschke ’87 and Jim Romenesko with inspiring his passion for performing. “What I learned at Xavier with their focus on service, faith, and academic or professional excellence led me on the path to achieve my dreams.” In addition to theatre, Adam was involved with athletics and numerous co-curricular activities and is quick to note that Xavier’s goal of developing well rounded students served him well on his journey. “If I had only been one dimensional I would have missed out on numerous opportunities.” After leaving Xavier he attended the University of Wisconsin –Madison for one year. It was there that he began to perform with the Wisconsin Singers, incidentally the same artists he had watched as a senior in the newly constructed Wallace Fine Arts Center at Xavier. Next, Adam moved east to attend Fordham University/ Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. He later earned his Master of Fine Arts from the Tisch School of Arts at New York University. Today Adam is an internationally recognized director, choreographer, teacher, and performer. His most recent work has been as the Director of “Symphony of the Seas,” an aqua-based multi-disciplinary hit for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He has also contributed to projects for Walt Disney Entertainment including “Finding Nemo: the Musical” and as the principal dancer in “Festival of the Lion King.” While Adam is known in his industry for his agility, strength, and aerial work, he takes pride in his accomplishments off the stage as well. His greatest joy is the time spent with his wife and daughters, as well as the opportunities for inspiring and serving others. What’s next in this talented Xavier graduate’s career? St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Dear Xavier Catholic Schools Community, Each year, as December comes to an end, a variety of media publications put out “best-of” lists. These lists might focus on the "most memorable moments" or their own “top ten highlights of the year," but they almost always focus on the idea that the year is ending. The end, they argue, is the best time to look back and appreciate the things that brought us here.

In a way, this makes sense. Only when something is finished can you see the whole story. The issue for us, here at Xavier Catholic Schools, is that our story is never finished. It doesn't end with the calendar year or with the school year. For us, the story is always happening. We are always at the beginning, and that means any kind of definitive “best-of” list is always temporary. It will always draw from our alumni, current students, and present and past faculty, and it will always look ahead to the promise of future success. That success is and always has been dependent on you, our donors, and we're grateful for your continued commitment. The story of our year is just one chapter in a larger narrative. It tells of our successes in academics, athletics, fine arts, service, and the impact of our students on the Xavier community. It tells of faith and science, math and literature, and it runs seamlessly into our next chapter. We believe Catholic education is something that serves our community constantly, spanning across generations. As donors and alumni, you've all already played a vital role in sustaining our success. By the Numbers During the past year, St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System, Inc has operated with a positive cash flow and has not drawn on its line of credit since July 2011. This period reflects a decrease in total Net Assets of $802,000 primarily due to depreciation expenses of $809,000. Tuition and Fees represents 59% of total revenue while 72% of our expenses are related to the compensation and benefits of our teachers and staff. Tuition assistance offered to families increased by 14% over the prior year.

St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation, Inc. Dear Friends of Xavier: It is a privilege to write to you in my new role as Foundation president, after serving in the capacity of board member and vice president for the past three years. From the perspective of someone who attended eight years of Catholic grade school myself, and whose children have progressed from kindergarten through high school in the Xavier Catholic School System, I can attest to the positive impact that Catholic education has played in developing character, reinforcing values and preparing students for the rigorous demands of higher education.

I am pleased to announce that the Foundation ended our fiscal year 2018 with assets exceeding $7.1 million. Our asset base allowed us to extend over $550,000 of tuition assistance and ongoing support to the system over the past year. In addition, the continued success of the Xavier Catholic School System is the result of the collaborative efforts of many stakeholders: faculty, staff, volunteers, parents and financial benefactors. All play an integral role in ensuring a quality education for students of today and future generations. We are deeply appreciative of your support and future consideration.

New to the Area

Relocation: Home is Where the School Is In this day and age, job relocations are more and more common. Each time a family gets the news that it’s time to pick up roots and move to a new community, it sets into motion a series of checklists, web searches, and family discussions. Where are we moving? When? How? For Martha and Ron Rheinheimer and their four children, this relocation was no different. The family had been through seven previous relocations ranging from Canada to the U.S., so they were accustomed to sorting out and prioritizing all the variables. Coming to the Fox Valley, this time from St. Louis, Martha and Ron knew what was important to them. At the top of the list was picking a school for their children first, and then looking for a house that was conveniently located.

“We wanted to find a high quality school,” said Martha. “A school with excellent facilities and teachers. Every day they will be learning about the world around them and we looked for ways in which they would be challenged.” There were other school factors important to the Rheinheimer’s decision, including a strong Catholic values system. For Martha, Ron and their four children, Emma (7th grade), Luke (6th), Christopher (4th), and Henry (PK4), the solution was clear. They chose the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System. Since arriving here in February 2018, their hopes have been realized.

“This is the best school we’ve ever been to,” says Martha. “It far exceeds anything we ever dreamed of. My children are safe. The teachers work hard at what they do. They are receptive to our suggestions and are always willing to work with us to help each child be successful according to their unique talents and gifts.” The family credits the personal attention from the admissions department as well as the principals and others involved in the on-boarding process. “Tara (Pearce) sold the school (System) to us. She made everything seamless.”Let’s hope that the seventh time is a charm! We look forward to the Rheinheimers spending many more years as part of our community of learners, believers, and friends.
