We hope that this magazine provides you with key information about the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System. We’ve combined multiple publications from the past into a comprehensive, interesting,

and informational view of Appleton’s premier Catholic school system. In this single-source publication you’ll find updates on alumni worldwide. We’ll include photos and summaries of class reunions as well as notes on alumni that focus on everything from weddings to births and job changes. You’ll also find highlights of what’s been happening at our campuses, including preschool, our two elementary campuses, middle school, and the high school. These events truly reflect our desire to be a Christ-centered school of missionary discipleship through faith, academics, service,
and individual growth. And X, The Xavier Magazine includes the information formerly published in our annual reports for both the System and the Xavier Foundation. These pages recognize all our donors from the past year, and provide the financial data you need to track our revenue and expenses. I hope you’ll agree that the information in the magazine will assist you in strengthening our mutual connection as a community of learners, believers, and friends. Finally, the success of an endeavor such as this depends upon the input of readers like you. Please make a point of forwarding story ideas,

1970s
Class of 1962 celebrated their 55th reunion at Stone Toad Bar & Grill.
The class of 1972 celebrated their 45th reunion at Beefeaters Restaurant. Phil Gloudemans `70 was named Associate Director, University Communications, at Boston College (BC), following seven years as director of Strategic Communications at Brown University’s Annenberg Institute. Founded in 1863, BC is a Jesuit university with 14,000 students and nine schools and colleges, and competes in the NCAA’s Division 1 Atlantic Coast Conference. Phil lives in Marblehead, Mass. with his wife and daughter.
Where does the time go? The class of 1967 celebrated their 50th reunion in September. A cocktail hour was hosted at Waverly Beach Friday evening and reunion dinner at the Appleton Yacht Club on Saturday.

A member of the adult choir at St. John the Baptist in Savage, MN, Greg Van Gompel ‘78 sang with Jeanne Cotter and Tony Alonzo, both nationally recognized liturgical recording artists, at a recent concert, premiering Jeanne Cotter’s newly written song, “If You Love Me,” commissioned for their pastor’s 25th anniversary of Ordination.
Are you a member of the class of 1968? On August 25, 2018 the class of 1968 will be celebrating its 50th reunion. Starting at 3pm, a tour of Xavier High School will be available to those interested. 1980s
The class of 1982 celebrated their 35th reunion at the Appleton Yacht Club. Festivities included rides on John Scherzinger’s boat.
The class of 1987 celebrated their 30th reunion on September 30th at Appleton Beer Factory.
1990s The class of 1977 celebrated their 40th reunion in August. Since high school, Xavier and Appleton West grads have maintained a close connection, so they celebrated their reunion together. Friday, August 18th featured golf at The Creeks at Ivy Acres, yoga at Pierce Park, and tours of Xavier High School. Saturday was the “main event” at Pierce Park. It was a day full of yard games, grilling, reconnecting, and reflecting on high school and life experiences. The classes hosted a silent auction to raise funds for both schools. Xavier alumni donated the funds to the athletics and academics designations within the St. Francis Xavier Fund. Appleton West alumni donated their half to the capital campaign for a new turf football field. Collectively, they raised $12,160. While fundraising is never expected at high school reunions, the generosity and support of both classes of 1977 is greatly appreciated by Xavier Catholic Schools.
This summer, Governor Scott Walker announced the appointment of Carrie Rathsack Schneider ’92, to fill a judicial vacancy left by the retirement of Judge Michael Gage. Carrie has served as Outagamie County District Attorney for the past 14 years. Judge Carrie Schneider will be up for election this spring.
Curt Simon ’93 returns to Torchy Clark court this fall. Instead of wearing the Hawks jersey, which was his former pastime, Curt will be on the sidelines coaching the JV1 girls’ basketball team. Curt previously coached his daughter, Caiti, and the girls’ basketball team at Xavier Middle School and also coached XYBA. He and his wife, Jenny, also have a son, Connor, at Xavier High School and another daughter, Ciara, at Xavier Elementary School,, McDonald Street campus. Curt is eager to expand his coaching knowledge under new Varsity head coach BJ Buss.

2000s
This fall, Attorney General Brad Schimel announced the appointment of Sopen Shah ’04 as a Deputy Solicitor General for the State of Wisconsin. Shah graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude. She is a 2015 graduate of Yale Law School, where she served as the managing editor of the Yale Law Journal. Tiffany Woelfel ’07 is working as a law clerk to William Griesbach, Chief Judge, United States District Court for Eastern Wisconsin.
2010s
Maggie Wallace Reader ’13 and Michael Reader ’13 were married on September 23, 2017. Their ceremony took place at St. Mary Church in Appleton. The wedding was quite the reunion as both Maggie and Michael’s parents are also Xavier alumni. The above photo features Xavier alumni and current Xavier students—over 50 in all spanning from the year Xavier opened in 1959 to the bride’s youngest sister, Tessa, who will graduate from Xavier in 2027!
This past May, Logan Van Hoof ’10 graduated from Marquette University Dental School. John Van Hoof ’82, Logan’s father and also a dentist, was there to hood Logan at the ceremony. Logan lives in Madison and works at No Fear Dentistry. If you are in the Madison area, stop in and say “hello” to Dr. Logan.
Matt Dupont ’11 and fiancée Jamie Collins are engaged to be married on April 21, 2018. The couple met at Marquette University.
Nathaniel Stewart ’15 earned a spot on the Dean’s List Fall 2016 and Spring 2017. Nathaniel is a student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University.
Joelle Tremblay ’15 was awarded the Capitol and Carolina Internship with Belmont Abbey College. Joelle, a sophomore, interned this summer in Washington D.C. for Patrick McHenry, a United States Representative for North Carolina’s 10th congressional district. She will continue interning at his Gastonia office during fall term. This internship is exclusive for students enrolled at Belmont Abbey College and only one individual is chosen.
Currently studying Psychology and American Studies at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, Megan DuBois ’15 is spending this semester at Trinity College in Ireland. In September Megan was visited by her brother, Patrick DuBois ’09, and father, Deacon Ray DuBois. Patrick currently is an Associate at Jones Day, Chicago. 10

Currently studying History and Political Science at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, Andrew Bailey ’16 was named to the Spring 2017 Dean’s List. Andrew is a member of the school’s cross-country and Nordic ski teams.

An internship at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, located in Wausau, provided Meghan Wagner ’14 with the opportunity to display her many talents. As an arts management and studio art major at University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point, Meghan was given the opportunity to curate an exhibition coinciding with the Federal Duck Stamp Contest, hosted at the college. The pieces are on loan from The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Meghan was also responsible for the design and preparation of the gallery in which they were displayed. The Duck Stamp Contest originated in 1949 and is nationally recognized. Various locations across the country have hosted the contest to provide more people the opportunity to attend.

Francis “Dutch” Scholtz, age 88, passed away in May. Mr. Scholtz was the first band director at Xavier High School and directed his bands to first place national awards for several years. Under his direction, the Xavier Wind Ensemble was highly ranked during the 1960s. He also made an album “Best of 1964” featuring the Xavier bands. Mr. Scholtz was highly respected for his devotion to church, family, and student efforts. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, children Greg and Claire Ann, and grandchildren.

Hall of Honors Two members from the Xavier community, Jane Kools-Blake and Jim Rather ’64, returned to Xavier High School on Friday, September 29th as they were recognized at the Hall of Honors ceremony. The Hall of Honors distinguishes individuals who serve as influential Catholic Christian role models for present and future Xavier students. Two distinctions were awarded. Receiving the Honorary Alumni Award, Jane Kools-Blake’s servant leadership and accomplished professional
career make her an outstanding paragon for Xavier students. Jim Rather earned his induction to the Alumni Hall of Fame through his career in the Navy and current service to others in his community during his retirement. His service is appreciated and admirable. Congratulations to all of our recent and past honorees. Thank you for being positive

In August, Lynn Zetzman and her husband, Frank, had the pleasure of visiting with Xavier alumnus Samuel Hosek ’08 in Prague, Czech Republic. Samuel and Mrs. Zetzman have kept in touch over the years and he noted that their visit was exactly 10 years to the day from when he had come to Xavier for his Global Outreach experience. Since Xavier, Samuel has gone on to earn an undergraduate degree in vocal performance from a university in Bratislava, Slovakia and is now pursuing another in Prague, studying with Hana Peckova, a celebrated opera/ vocal teacher. Their visit included a journey to Kutna Hora in central Bohemia, a site noted for its religious fervor. They explored the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Bone Church, famous for its chandelier utilizing at least one of every bone in the human body. Class of 2017 By the Numbers:
In the past four years, the class of 2017 performed 25,401 hours of Christian service. This equals 168 hours per student, well over the 80 hours that are required! 96% of the class attended college this fall, including 49% at colleges outside of Wisconsin. 1% went to technical college or specialty school, 1% entered military service and 2% pursued other opportunities. College and universities awareded $4.48 million in college scholarships to the class of 2017. Averaged 25.7 on the ACT, and 40% of the class had a score of 28 or higher. 8 of our 19 conference sports finished as champions or runners-up in their conferences. Nine sports had their team, or individuals on the team, qualify for the state tournament. There were three individual state champions and two team state championsboys’ basketball and boys’ track and field. The class of 2017 formed two new clubs, the Psychology Club and Investment Club.

Courts for Kids Trip to Thibaud, Dominica Nine Xavier students and a teacher travelled to Thibaud, Dominica in July with Courts for Kids (CFK), a U.S.-based group that partners with local communities worldwide to build basketball and multi-purpose courts. This was Xavier’s first group to participate on a CFK mission trip, and the XHS group included students involved in football, soccer, basketball, track, and theater. Thibaud is a village of 300 people on the northeast shore of the island nation of Dominica, a mountainous nation with a population of 70,000.
“Looking back on it, this trip is one of the greatest things I have done in my life. The Thibaud people were welcoming, happy, and caring. Material wealth does not bring lasting happiness, but being connected with God and helping others brings true happiness. Baseball: The Hawks competed well in a tough conference, finished in second place, and lost to Freedom in the regional game.
Girls Soccer: The Hawks were once again conference champs. They were regional champions and lost in a sectional final to Winneconne. Midfielder Mari Seidler was selected Bay Conference Offensive Player of the Year and goalie Skylar England was Bay Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Boys Tennis: Once again, a great conference season for the Hawks, who captured second place in the conference, first in sub-sectionals, and second in sectionals. The doubles team of Konnor Barth and David Horak advanced to the state tournament, and placed fifth. Johnny Horak also advanced to state but lost in his first round.
Boys Golf: Led by third year coach and Xavier alum Corey Feller ‘92, the senior dominated Hawks had a banner year as conference, regional, and sectional champions! The team placed fifth at state.
Softball: Under the guidance of second year head coach Peggy Visocky, the young Hawks strove for continual improvement throughout the season. They placed 7th in the conference, and lost a first round regional to Waupaca.
Mock Trial: Teams finished another successful year. The JV team placed second among ten teams at regionals. Varsity won regionals and advanced to the state competition.
Track & Field: The girls and boys track and field teams had another successful and promising season, and setting several new school records. The boys finished in third place in the conference and the girls in fourth. Nathan Broullire, Luke Bailey and Daniel Bendel scored enough points to bring home a state championship! This summer, the Post-Crescent named Luke Bailey the “Athlete of the Year in boys track and field�.
Robotics: Team 536C was Tournament Champion at the US Open and was the Excellence Award winner at the Wisconsin State Tournament which qualified them for the World Championship in Louisville, KY. At Worlds, the team finished 6-4 in qualifying rounds and, as the #6 seed, lost to the #2 seed in the quarterfinals. Despite not making it to the next round, the group won the Arts Division Think Award which is given to one team whose programming was clear, concise and allowed the robot to play the game efficiently. .

40 Years of
HIGH SCHOOL
German Exchanges Fifteen Xavier High School students and two teachers traveled to Germany this past June. They visited Xavier’s partner school, the Rhein-Sieg-Gymnasium, for a week. Xavier High School has had student exchanges with the Rhein-Sieg-Gymnasium for the past 40 years. Students spent the week immersed in the culture while in classes and staying with German host families. They then traveled to Würzburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Munich. In October, Xavier and the XHS students and their families then played hosts to the German students. Written by Frau Rosenbaum

Students compete at the National FBLA Leadership Conference
Competing in areas of sports and entertainment management, social media campaign, digital video production, and computer game and simulation programming, ten students were exposed to a wide variety of experiences. Some completed a 100 question test within an hour whereas other students created presentations and spoke before judges to gain the coveted top spots. The group of Jenna Schmitt, Keegan Sawin, and Madeline Mleziva placed in the top 16 in the social media campaign event. The group of Jonah Casimir, Seth Julien, and Peter Vanderkolk, placed eighth nationally in the category of computer game and simulation programming. MIDDLE SCHOOL
Slow Down. Find God. Celebrate. Sixth Grade Camp. Each year in mid-September, the 6th grade students at Xavier Middle School travel north to Camp Nan A Bo Sho for three days and two nights. Teachers and students leave behind school walls to learn in the woods. Routines are interrupted for the adults who join us. There are no after school practices or competitions. We slow down. The Creation story sets the tone for us to seek God in all that we encounter. We hike to the bog, we canoe on the lake, we sing, we share meals, we stare at the sky, we pray, we laugh, we sleep (a little). We engage ourselves in the activities and quietly reflect. On Holy Ground, we find God. Camp is a Xavier Middle School tradition. Ask a graduate about camp and they will have a story to share. We each have our own unique experience: excitement, fear, peace, growth. But these experiences happen in community. And these shared experiences create tradition. We celebrate. Each year there are different people, the shoreline changes, and the weather is unpredictable, but the goals of 6th grade camp remain the same: slow down, find God, and celebrate. Sharing Faith
nce a month at each of the St. Francis Xavier Elementary Campuses, Mrs. Sandy Oudenhoven shares her passion and creative talents as children age 2-5 and their parents and grandparents gather for Songs, Stories, & Fun. The program features interactive storytelling through puppets and finger play. However, if you think this is just another puppet show… think again! From the moment one enters the room you can sense the anticipation, feel the energy, and witness each child’s excitement as Mrs. Oudenhoven shares her strong faith with the group while relating stories from the Bible. For Mrs. Oudenhoven, her favorite part is having the “best seat in the house”, observing how children grow their faith as they interact with the puppets and learn important skills such as sharing, taking turns, and the qualities of being a good person. As she describes it, “It’s truly faith, fun, and family” noting that each parent/grandparent in attendance is equally engaged. A typical session features activities, stories, singing, and dancing, all of which include interactive components and involve faith-based themes. Faith is truly what has inspired Mrs. Oudenhoven over the years. She credits the Holy Spirit for guiding her to bring something wonderful to each individual program. You need look no further than watching a shy child break into song or see an excited threeyear-old hug a puppet to know that she has succeeded in making someone’s day. The program originated while Mrs. Oudenhoven was teaching Pre-Kindergarten at St. Pius. Due to its success Songs, Stories, & Fun is now performed at area day care centers, nursing homes, and local parishes. Xavier alumni regularly attend sessions with their families, and all are welcome to witness firsthand Mrs. Oudenhoven’s faith and storytelling talent on display. During the past year, St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System operated with a positive cash flow. Our line of credit has not been drawn on since July 2011. This period reflects a decrease in total Net Assets of $738,000 due to depreciation expenses of $847,256. Tuition and Fees represents 59% of total revenue while 71% of our expenses are related to the compensation and benefits of our teachers and staff.

SPECIAL EVENTS
Each year, the St. Francis Xavier Advancement team coordinates three major events designed to build community and generate revenue to support the system at all levels from Pre-K -12th grade. Last winter almost $300,000 in funds were raised at Celebrate 2017 through sponsorships, live and silent auctions, and philanthropic giving. In May, the Xavier community gathered in support of the 45th annual Food Fair and the 3rd Annual Tour de Francis Benefit Ride and provided over $70,000 of additional support.
SUPPORTING ORGANIZATIONS The following groups work collaboratively with the Advancement office to enhance the overall student experience and community outreach:
BOOSTER CLUB– supports our 19 high school athletic teams, by sharing time, talent, and treasure. The Booster Club’s most notable efforts are an annual golf outing, football frenzy ticket sales, and sponsorship opportunities.

FOUNDATION REPORT
The St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation exists for the purpose of receiving and stewarding funds and assets from generous donors like yourselves, to use exclusively for the benefit of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System. The Foundation continues to be blessed with generous gifts and prudent investment returns, and finished fiscal year 2017 with assets in excess of $6,000,000. This allowed it to provide more than $300,000 of tuition assistance and other financial support to the System last year. As the System strives to retain its tradition of excellence, its financial needs increase. The Foundation is an excellent repository for donors who want this excellence in Catholic education to continue for our future generations. Naming the Foundation as a beneficiary in your Will, Revocable Trust or retirement plan assets will result in you essentially making annual gifts to the Xavier Catholic Schools long after you have passed away. The Foundation typically distributes 5% of its funds to the Xavier Catholic Schools each year. Working this mathematically in reverse, this means that if you leave a bequest to the Foundation of 20 times the amount of your typical or desired annual gift, that annual gift will continue in perpetuity. The Foundation works closely with Xavier’s Advancement Department to assist not only with Xavier’s current financial needs, but also its long range planning. If you are someone who has designated Xavier (or the Foundation) as a beneficiary in your estate planning documents, notify the Advancement Department, allowing us to include your name in our Legacy Circle, letting your family and friends know that your care for the Xavier Catholic School extends beyond that which you will be able to see with your own eyes. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Xavier Foundation, we appreciate how the multitude of caring faculty, staff, parents, volunteers, and donors have allowed our children and all of the youth of the Fox Cities the opportunity to have an excellent Catholic education. Our inaugural Xavier Day was hosted on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, the same day as the class of 2017 graduation ceremony. Members of the Xavier community were encouraged to wear Xavier gear, care by making a donation and share their pride on social media using the #XavierDay. This was the first social-media-driven fundraising campaign for Xavier Catholic Schools and the results set the bar high for future Xavier Day events. Community members visited each of the four schools in the morning for coffee, and alumni gathered at local restaurants. Out of state alumni living tagged themselves wearing Xavier gear on social media sites. Students, parents, pastors, grandparents, faculty and staff came together at all four campuses to share the pride they have for Xavier Catholic Schools. The generosity of the Xavier community was represented coast to coast. At the end of the day, $51,000 was raised to support Xavier Catholic Schools and the Xavier Foundation. More importantly, the camaraderie of the Xavier community was astonishing and proved once again that there is something truly special about being a Xavier Hawk.
