The Xavier System’s success, despite COVID19, has been unrivaled in our community. Our leadership team, faculty, and staff showed great vision and foresight in developing a plan with a clear path to start the school year with students on campus for daily instruction. We have provided a rigorous, high-quality education in our unique faith-filled, Catholic environment that encourages and supports our students' growth both academically and spiritually.

System Administration

Despite the difficulties in combating the virus, we have adapted by creating innovative ways to provide the best possible experience for our students at all levels. Our Mr. Phillip Riley, Jr. teams have competed, academic competitions have been President contested, and our students even found a way to hold a virtual Homecoming! Thanks to the commitment of our eight Mr. Bob Biebel Appleton parishes and their pastors, we have been able to Vice President of Advancement ensure the Eucharist is available through weekly Masses. We have harnessed the creative energy of our community and Mr. Tom Candell still enjoyed some of our most treasured activities, such as Vice President of Finance and Christmas Stars and Celebrate. Administration It is important that we recognize our teachers and staff who have made incredible sacrifices. When we started the year, so much was unknown. We believed that our plans and protocols would provide the path to safe, daily, in-person instruction. Our teachers embraced this and made it happen. We are profoundly grateful to our staff for their sacrifice and service to our students and their families. As you read through this edition of the magazine, you will find it filled with the stories of how our community is succeeding, with many examples of the good work of our students and staff. These stories will show the great commitment to our System and the importance of Xavier as an asset to the Fox Valley community. The #XavierXperience featuring the Ourada family Joe and Vickie’s Journeys Joe’s Xavier journey started as a kindergarten at St. Thomas More, now the Xavier Elementary - McDonald Street campus. The Xavier journey began for Vickie (Peterson) at St. Joe’s, now Xavier Middle School, when her family moved here just prior to her seventh grade year. Vickie’s family joined St. Thomas More Parish. Joe and Vickie have technically known each other since 7th grade.

The pair graduated from Xavier High School in 1996 and both went on to Madison, though Joe attended Edgewood College while Vickie attended UW-Madison. Staying connected with other Xavier friends is actually what brought them together as a couple. Welcoming Joe and Abigail Joe and Vickie started their careers in the Madison area. They eventually began a family and, although they enjoyed their life in Madison, they always knew that they would return to Appleton so that their children could attend school in the Xavier system. Joe '25 is now an 8th grader and Abigail '26 is a 7th grader, both at Xavier Middle School. Having their children grow up in a faith-based environment has always been a priority for Joe and Vickie. Parish and school collaboration for faith education also greatly contributed to their desire to send their children to Xavier. They feel strongly about ensuring their children grow into well-rounded adults with a strong faith while being engaged members of their community and they recognize the Xavier System can assist in this endeavor. A Family XavierXperience Joe and Vickie are pleased that their children share some of the same experiences that they had in school such as prayer services, service clubs, sports and fine arts programs. The family enjoys watching games together in the Torch, attending events such as Homecoming and Food Fair, as well as participating in service opportunities as a family. Joe and Vickie enjoy seeing other Xavier alumni also continue the tradition of providing a faith-based education for their children. Lastly, they say that having one of their high school friends, Mrs. Alena Tapelt, as their children’s principal was priceless. In their journey, they are grateful for Mrs. Tapelt and all the other staff who they are fortunate enough to know as friends along the way.

On March 1-4, 2021, the Xavier System hosted an accreditation engagement review led by Dr. John Ravizza, Superintendent. The review provides the Xavier System an opportunity to celebrate our great work as well as identify key improvement areas. Our schools have been accredited since 1970. Our five-year review was conducted by educators working in private and Catholic schools across the country via the Cognia organization. As part of the review, virtual focus groups were conducted with: Xavier’s leadership, school administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, pastors, Board of Trustees, and community members. The primary focus of the accreditation process is continuous improvement that results in the success of all learners. This includes measuring the quality of learning and instruction in our classrooms and the overall system management using a defined set of performance standards. Each set of standards is organized under three distinct domains: Leadership Capacity, Learning Capacity, and Resource Capacity. Xavier constituencies rate these standards and provide evidence to substantiate the ratings. The Engagement Review Team then uses the focus groups to confirm the ratings in the self-assessment. Approximately one month following our review, Xavier’s leadership team will receive a Summary Report, which will then be shared with all.

The Xavier Booster Club Golf Outing, held each year in June, was rescheduled to September in 2020 due to the restrictions brought on by COVID earlier in the summer. The golf outing, which raises funds for Xavier athletics, is a four-person 18-hole scramble held at Royal St. Patrick’s Golf Links in Wrightstown. Registration includes a gift for each golfer, lunch, dinner, and program. The event also includes various games, silent auction, raffles, and contests. Thank you to the sponsors, donors, and participants that supported the 2020 event which had a record number of sponsorships as well as total amount raised: nearly $40,000! Whether you attend this event annually, or have never participated before, please plan to join us at the next golf outing scheduled for June 15, 2021. This event usually sells out. Thomas Feavel '62 and Margaret Bekkers continue their distinguished stewardship by supporting four new Endowment Funds. With the Green Bay Diocese Foundation the Bekkers/Feavel Leadership Development Endowment was established for recruitment and education of deacons and new pastoral leaders; and to support ecclesial vocations such as pastoral associates, religious education directors, parish business managers, youth ministers and any other lay ecclesial ministries. With the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region they have established the Margaret Bekkers and Thomas Feavel Fund for Harbor House to provide for the greatest needs of Harbor House. With the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation Torchy Clark… they have established the Margaret Bekkers and Thomas more than just Feavel Fund for the Christine Ann Center's Greatest Needs the name of the as well as the Margaret Bekkers and Thomas Feavel Fund for high school gym Saint Francis Community Clinic - Father Carr's Place 2 B for where alumni purchasing medical and dental supplies. Women, Unlocking the New Model of Women's Success in Business and Entrepreneurship for the Next Decade! This book will be available on Amazon

in May because of the generous support of many Xavier alumni on her Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. The book celebrates awesome, authentic women and shares some stories of XAVIER ALUMNAE. Its goal is to help women grow professionally through an incubator model developed after five years of research working with women who run their own businesses. It includes a roadmap of how to succeed as a business owner, with key milestones documented and an understanding of the typical emotions faced at each phase of business ownership. Sheila wrote this book because she wants to see more women starting, leading, and growing companies. Her hope is that, in reading this book, you will discover what is normal for entrepreneurs at each phase of running a business, including obtaining encouragement and support. 6

1990s This fall, Curt Simon ’93, was promoted to assistant varsity coach of the Xavier girls’ basketball team after coaching the JV girls’ team for the past two seasons. Andy Vande Hey ’92 took over as head coach for the JV girls’ team.

Cindy (Salm) Bauer ‘00 graduated from Xavier High School in 2000 as valedictorian and subsequently went on to many years of education, including 10-years of medical training. Recently, she was named Section Chief of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Phoenix Children's Hospital! She is actively involved in medical education, clinical research and philanthropy (serving as Medical Director for a non-profit, Camp-Not-A-Wheeze). In December, Tiffany Woelfel ’07 was honored as one of the recipients of Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce 2020 Future 15 Young Professionals Award, hosted by Pulse Young Professionals Network. Future 15 selects recipients based on “their commitment to philanthropy, professional dedication, and strong sense of vision for the future of the Fox Cities”. Tiffany is a Litigation Attorney at Davis & Kuelthau, S.C. in Green Bay. She graduated from University of MinnesotaTwin Cities with a degree in Non-Profit Management and International Business, and completed law school at the University of Wisconsin.

2010s Kieran Wallace '15 will marry Emily Boland on August 7, 2021. Kieran is currently working at a studio in Madison as an audio engineer. He graduated with his master's degree in Music Technology, Development and Innovation from Berklee College of Music this past July. Emily began her journey to obtain a law degree at University of WisconsinMadison this fall.

Since graduating from Xavier, Audrey Miller ’15 has been running (pun-intended) to a successful future. Audrey attended Loras College, accumulating numerous achievements both in the classroom and on the track. As a cross country, and track and field athlete, she was named the Chi Alpha Sigma Scholar Athlete of the Year and was a top 30 finalist (out of 605 nominees) for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year. In December 2019, Audrey graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Chemistry, minors in Spanish and Biology, and received the R.J. McElroy Trust Ph.D Fellowship Award. The McElroy Fellowship was established to support accomplished student leaders looking to further pursue challenging academic careers. Finalists are selected from colleges and universities in Northeast Iowa. More recently, Audrey received the “Joanna Olsen Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year” award, the highest scholar athlete award in the American Rivers Conference. Last summer, she earned one of just 126 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Audrey is currently working toward a Ph.D. in Cosmochemistry from the University of California, Davis. xaviercatholicschools.org

Legacy Graduate

Engaged in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Xavier graduates Olivia Simon ’15 and Kyle Balster ’15 are planning a wedding on September 25, 2021. After high school, the two attended University of Minnesota. Olivia is currently the Director of Operations at ChemDirect and owner of Liv + Remember, her own photography business. Kyle is in his second year of earning a masters in architecture at Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCIArc) located in Los Angeles, California.

In August, Tom Johnson ’15 proposed to Maddie Helein ’15 at Canal Park in Duluth, MN. The couple have dated since their senior year at Xavier and according to Maddie “met in Mrs. Baruth's 6th grade homeroom at St. Joes (Xavier Middle School)”! Maddie graduated from Saint Louis University with a degree in Nursing and Tom graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Applied Sciences. Tom played football for the Bulldogs and was captain his senior year! Maddie and Tom reside in Minneapolis, MN where she works as a pediatric intensive care nurse at Minneapolis Children's Hospital. Tom is a medical device sales rep at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for Johnson and Johnson's spinal division. They are planning a fall 2021 wedding in Appleton. Jacquelyn Karisny ’15 and Christian Seidler ’15 are getting married on August 14, 2021. Christian proposed to Jacquelyn at Lutz Park, the same location where his parents, Xavier alumni couple Chip ’82 and Patti (Parker) Seidler ’84 got engaged 34 years ago! Both received their undergraduate degree at University of Minnesota. Christian is currently an account executive in premium sales with Legends Hospitality at the University of WisconsinMadison. Jacquelyn is completing her master of science degree in speech language pathology at the University of Wisconsin- Madison.

Xavier Pride Worldwide!

Currently studying at Indiana University, Jessica Bittner ’18 was selected as a semi-finalist for The American Pop Orchestra’s NextGen National: Finding the Voices of Tomorrow competition. She was one of 30 contestants that competed in November for a paid performance opportunity with The American Pops Orchestra (APO) during their 2021-2022 season, and a $1,000 scholarship. Xavier graduates Charissa Wallace ’18 and Matt Rathsack '17 are engaged. Their wedding is set for May 1, 2021. Charissa will be graduating from Edgewood College in Madison with a bachelor's degree in graphic arts in the spring of 2021. Matt will also be graduating in the spring of 2021 from UW-Madison with a bachelor's degree in Japanese.

FLASHBACK!

At the Class A State Catholic Track meet held in Milwaukee, Xavier’s own Bill Pfefferle won the 1969 Catholic State Championship in the Discus. Bill’s throw of 145 feet 2 inches garnered the top spot and helped the Xavier team to an eighth place overall finish. Shown here (first on left) is Bill receiving his first place trophy. Bill and his classmates returned to Xavier as part of their 50th reunion in August 2019. Bill and his wife, Colleen, met in Cincinnati and celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary this past Thanksgiving. They are the proud parents of two children, Wendy and Richard, and seven wonderful grandchildren. He spent the majority of his career in sales but transitioned to education and taught students with special needs at the high school and junior high levels.

Class of 1970: 51st Reunion Due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the class of 1970's 50th reunion has to once again be postponed. Originally scheduled for 2020, then rescheduled for August 20, 2021, the venue does not anticipate being able to accommodate all attendees in August, so the reunion has once again been postponed. Since 1959, Xavier High School has continued to develop strong traditions. Our alumni have shaped the school during their student years, and continue to be involved in the life of the school as generous supporters, parents and grandparents, faculty/staff, and volunteer leaders. Last year over 500 Xavier alumni made a gift to Xavier, totaling over $240,000! We deeply appreciate their generosity and all they do in support of the next generation of Hawks.

Class of 1981: 40th Reunion The Class of 1981's fun-filled 40th reunion weekend is scheduled for the fourth weekend in July. Join us at Appleton Beer Factory at 5:30 PM on Friday, July 23. There is an all-city reunion planned for Saturday, July 24, with the venue and time still being determined. Two years ago Xavier began an alumni class challenge to help bring attention to the importance of our former students participating in building a philanthropic culture. For the second year in a row, the Class of 1977 was named the official class challenge winner, achieving a 15.97% participation level. Following very close behind was the class of 1991 with 14.63%, the class of 1964 with 12.97% and the class of 1973 with 12.06%. Alumni support is a key factor in the success and growth of Xavier. Not only is alumni giving percentage a “vote of support” in one’s alma mater, it impacts the quality of excellence and opportunities each student is afforded. As fortunate as we are to have so many generous stakeholders and even with our overall participation numbers increasing, our alumni giving level of 6% still lags behind the national average of 16%.

GAME CALLED “Upon the field of life, the darkness gathers far and wide, the dream is done, the score is spun that stands forever in the guide. Nor victory, nor yet defeat is chalked against the player’s name. But down the roll, the final scroll shows only how he played the game." -Grantland Rice For the past 40 years, sports enthusiasts from across the state of Wisconsin opened their Wisconsin State Journals to read the crisp, clean writing of Xavier’s own Tom Oates ‘70. This past summer Tom wrote his last column and finished the dream that Xavier Alumnus Bill Hurley ’72 encouraged him to pursue while majoring in Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin. Throughout his storied career, Tom didn’t just share the victories and the defeats. He built a relationship with his audience, started a conversation, and created a connection. That connectedness was a huge part of his success, which Tom is quick to point out was nurtured by Xavier teachers Brother Gordon and Brother Cormac, both of Tom and his family whom encouraged him to think independently and act with intellectual integrity. He also credits diagramming sentences at St. Mary’s Grade School and his two years of Latin at Xavier. Athletics played a key role in Tom’s life. Growing up, listening to Bob Lloyd and reading the Post-Crescent, the Milwaukee Sentinel, and the Milwaukee Journal provided great examples of writing and reporting styles. Perhaps even more important was attending Xavier games while in grade school with childhood friend Bob Heideman ’70 to watch Bob’s late brother Mike ’66 play football and basketball. In Tom’s words, “I wanted to ‘be like Mike’ long before some guy named Jordan coined the phrase”. Among the highlights of his career were covering the Packers in 1996, the UW Rose Tom with fellow Xavier classmates (from left to Bowl team of ‘93, and watching right): Tom ‘70, John Schroeder ‘70, Phil Badger star Michael Finley Gloudemans ‘70, Tom Harris ‘70 help turn around Wisconsin’s basketball program. In terms of coaches, while he has been blessed to cover many great ones, Dick Bennett always stood out to him as a master builder of programs who got the most out of his players. What is he most proud of? “The thing that I’m proudest of is I never sold out. I’ve always believed fans don’t want reporters to be either shrill critics or unabashed homers all the time. They want reporters who present news or opinions in an intelligent, realistic manner that reflects the truth.”

Show Them What to Do (Don’t Tell Them What to Do)

Xavier alumnus, Andrew Schmitz ’14, is an entrepreneur at heart, always knowing he has wanted to work for himself. While working for others, his side hustle was creating videos for businesses seeking employee training programs. Schmitz understands that people retain knowledge at higher rates through visual learning so he got creative in his capturing methodology and eventually turned it into his full-time job when he formally co-founded Proceed.app in 2019. The company is based upon the idea of showing people what you do as opposed to telling them what you do. The young company has received several accolades including a major one last summer at Summerfest Tech. A highlight of Summerfest Tech, now in its third year, is a competitive pitch contest. To be eligible, startups have to have raised less than $250,000 in capital or be generating less than $500, 000 in annual revenue. The competition is fierce and the judges prestigious. Schmitz’s company took home first place and the $12,500 prize. Not only was the prize money nice, it opened doors and gained the young company some vital publicity. More about Proceed.app Schmitz developed the idea for Proceed.app in November 2016 when he discovered the need for better knowledge sharing options for small businesses. A prototype for Proceed was created and he began testing the prototype with his clients. In May of 2019, Schmitz joined with two others and officially started Proceed LLC. September 2019 brought the addition of Mike Harper (COO) and Darren Koutnik (CTO) to the Proceed team. Both are experienced software developers and leaders with entrepreneurship backgrounds. In January 2020, the group welcomed early adopters into Proceed.app before welcoming customers in April 2020. Proceed.app is a cross platform web application that empowers organizations to capture and share the knowledge the business depends on using visuals like photos and videos. Proceed.app is used by small teams to stay competitive with better knowledge sharing, succession planning and training. Proceed.app’s innovative technology lowers the barrier to entry while providing the structure needed to carry into the future with visual knowledge sharing and training. The Burke Scholars Program at Marquette University: A Xavier Alumna's Journey

Recently, X, The Xavier Magazine caught up with Lauren Varkoly ’17 currently a senior studying Biomedical Sciences at Marquette University and she shared some thoughts on her college experience. Lauren’s transition to Marquette University was made possible through the Burke Scholarship Program. This program is a four-year, full-tuition, social justice scholarship that is awarded annually to ten graduating high school seniors. One of the requirements is that students take part in 150 hours of community service each semester. Serving her community was not something that was new to Lauren as she was heavily involved as a Xavier student and truly enjoyed reaching out to help others. However, it was through this program and numerous experiences that she quickly realized that the true meaning of community service is about human connection. These connections left her both inspired and heartbroken. Among the many memorable experiences that Lauren has had the opportunity to share include working at a homeless shelter helping residents find employment. Here she was able to celebrate with individuals when they were hired for a job, found steady income and were able to break their cycle of homelessness. Serving in a special care nursery at a daycare with toddlers who had high medical needs, Lauren saw the joy and innocence of these children up close and personal. She has also volunteered at a healing center for victims of domestic and sexual assault, and led a group of Marquette students volunteering at an after school program for Milwaukee Public School students. The Burke program has clearly provided Lauren with a wide range of experiences and emotions, many of which are difficult to put into words. In addition to their service work, the Burke Scholars meet regularly to discuss social justice issues in the Milwaukee community and in our world. Modeling the Jesuit education, the belief is that you do not truly become a Burke Scholar until you leave Marquette and live a life of service to others. If any current Xavier students are interested in obtaining a Marquette education augmented with community service and social justice, Lauren would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the Burke program and provide guidance on preparing for the scholarship, and the application and interview process. A Record Year

Murals at Titletown There is a common saying, “it is not what you know, but who you know”. Xavier alumni use their connections often and we like to share some stories here when we get wind of them. Here is one such fun tale: Jessica Dickhut ’13 is the Titletown Events Coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. Titletown hosts free programs throughout the summer, including family movie nights. As part of the festivities, there is a chalkboard wall set up next to the movie where families can have their photos taken with the themed mural. Dickhut knew of a fellow Xavier alumna’s artistic talent and asked fellow alumna Maggie Wallace Reader ’13 to create the murals for Titletown. Reader then asked fellow alumna and family friend, Lizzie Miller ’19, to work with her to create six murals for the movie series. (In the end, they created three as the movie series was limited due to COVID.) Reader and Miller were tasked to create murals for the “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Onward”, and “Black Panther” movie nights. The “Black Panther” mural included a tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Both artists loved the opportunity and had an incredible experience. Miller primarily paints (including mural experience) and has been dabbling in graphic art. Reader primarily creates colored pencil artwork. They do not consider chalk to be their strong or preferred medium, but enjoyed the challenge! With the Packers being such a prominent and important client, they both agreed that it was stressful but also considered it such an enriching and amazing experience! Both loved every minute of the process and are grateful to Jessica and the Packers to have had the opportunity.

Stateions! p m a h C The girls’ tennis team won their eighth consecutive undefeated Bay Conference Championship and earned Xavier’s first-ever WIAA State Tennis Team title beating Catholic Memorial 5-2 in the championship match. It was Xavier’s first-ever appearance at the girls' team state championship.

In October, Lauren Haen ’21 finished her Xavier golf career as the 2020 WIAA Division II Girls’ Golf State Champion, and was named the Bay Conference Player of the Year! Lauren earned a spot at the state tournament each year at Xavier, placing in the top ten the last two years. The girls' golf team repeated as conference champs and is coached by Lauren’s father and Xavier alumnus Jason Haen ’91.

Three girls also qualified for the WIAA State Tennis Individual Tournament. Erika Curtin ’21 (far left) placed second at the state singles championships. Teammates Bella Taleon ‘21 and Kylie McCormick ’21 placed second in the doubles championships.

The Xavier girls’ volleyball team was once again Bay Conference champions under fifth year coach Luke Herriges. It was the eighth straight conference championship for the Hawks. Senior Courtney Vande Hey ‘21 was named the Bay Conference Player of the Year in volleyball.

In his 20th season at Xavier, football coach Dave Hinkens had a successful season even without mention of the team’s record (which was 8-1). In October, Hinkens was selected as the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week. He also reached a milestone win of 150 games on October 30 against Winneconne. Coach Hinkens has led Xavier football into post-season play 17 of the last 18 seasons.

Freshmen Lilie Fouts ’24 and Josie Kwasny ’24 qualified for the WIAA Division 2 State Cross Country Meet. Lilie placed 14th and Josie Kwasny placed 45th out of a field of 114 runners.

The girls’ basketball team placed 2nd in the Bay Conference and defeated Menasha in the Regional Championship game. They lost to Freedom in sectional semi-finals, finishing their season 16-8. On senior night, Izzy Ballard ’21 scored 30 points, a single game points record at Xavier!

For the third year in a row, Mac Strand ’21 qualified for the Individual Wrestling State Tournament. Competing in the 220 pound weight class, Mac finished strong with a 3-1 victory and brought home the bronze medal! He placed 5th as a sophomore and 4th as a junior. Mac was also selected as the Bay Conference Co-Wrestler of the Year.

The boys’ basketball team was Bay Conference Champions and Regional Champions, defeating Little Chute to move on to Sectional Semi-Finals. They then defeated Luxemburg-Casco in sectionals to qualify for the state semifinals where they lost to Onalaska.

The Fox Cities Stars girls’ hockey team were sectional runners-up. Xavier junior Gwen Gillard ’22 (right) was named to the first team all-state.

Champion in her weight bracket last year in the unofficial girls’ state meet, Anna Strand ’22 competed in February at the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation High School Women’s Folkstyle State Championships, placing third. Last summer the WIAA approved girls’ state individual wrestling championships in the 2021-2022 season. Wisconsin is the 27th state to make girls' wrestling a sanctioned sport.

The Xavier Mock Trial team has competed completely virtual this year, which allowed the team to use the Zoom platform, similar to what litigators are dealing with in reality this year. The team was also fortunate to be able to scrimmage teams from all over the state utilizing the new Zoom format. The Varsity team finished 4th at the state competition in March.

The varsity football team finished their season with an 8-1 record, then won both of their Division 3 playoff games to end the year.

Strand's Gym Class Physical Education class at Xavier is a lot more than throwing balls and doing push-ups these days. A passion for personal and spiritual development led Coach Andy Strand to construct a class in which leadership, camaraderie and honoring God are more important than scoring goals and tallying points. Posted in his classroom as a constant reminder, this phrase is a mantra for Coach Strand.

What happens when creative, engaging seniors combine the restrictions of a pandemic, the desire to connect the traditions of Homecomings past, and 600 motivated (and competitive) students and teachers? Welcome to XHS Hybrid Homecoming 2020! This year’s festivities included week-long, K-Group competitions for the prestigious Mauthe Cup, new and social distance-approved activities, and some familiar, hybrid nods to tradition.

Punt, Pass, and Hike competition

To avoid large-group congregating, Powder Puff and Dodgeball gave way to Punt, Pass, & Hike, the Pep Rally went virtual, and an all-school online trivia contest subbed in for all-student gatherings in the theatre. In addition, K-Groups decorated doors, dressed up in the theme du jour, and recorded children’s stories for the Little Hawks at the XES Marquette and McDonald Street campuses. Away from school, students could accumulate additional K-Group points carving pumpkins with younger siblings, playing cards with grandparents, fishing, and making cards for area nursing homes. In a slight twist on tradition, seniors voted to Homecoming Court were paired and created some fantastic lip-sync videos, with an allschool vote to select 2020’s King & Queen - congrats to Courtney VandeHey & Izzy Simon, as well as the entire Homecoming Court, seniors: Kylie McCormick & Nate Clemons, Izzy Ballard & Charlie Schubbe, Gemma Hodgkiss & Logan Nevins, Anna Rose VanYe and Isaac Shimek, and Liv Anderson & Jonah Blohowiak.

During the week, the XHS community donated $600 to Pillars, collected 980 canned goods for St. Joe’s Food Pantry, and distributed 850 greeting cards to area nursing home residents. Well done, Hawks! Pumpkin carving with younger siblings • Spring 2021

Coach Strand’s Physical Education class is centered on a “team” concept. Each unit begins with the class divided into teams. Each team nominates a captain based on character and effort. The team performs drills and plays games together each day as they develop skills and build relationships. Class also includes time in the fitness center and a class discussion that includes prayer and a lesson of the day. Coach Strand’s mantras have become part of the fabric of Xavier. At any given moment, students respond to Coach Strand’s “Come, Holy Spirit” with an enthusiastic “Fire Up!”. Ask a Xavier student about honoring God today or the real “High Five” and they’ll be quick to quote Coach Strand. Jack Biesterveld ’22 says “things are always rooted in our Catholic faith, but it is a very competitive environment where we get to know each other and accomplish things together”. Each unit culminates with “championship day,” in which teams compete in a tournament to be crowned champions and have their team picture added to the wall of champions. Teams show up in “uniform,” wearing themes from pajamas to Hawaiian attire. Regardless of whether a student is a star athlete or someone who dreads athletic endeavor, “championship day” is a highlight of the term. Students emerge from Physical Education class as stronger young people in many ways. The integration of the Catholic faith and the emphasis on leadership separate the Xavier Physical Education program from what other high school students experience. In a challenging time, character formation and the support of one’s classmates are all the more important!

THE SAINTS KEEP MARCHING Fox Valley Saints football is a Christian school based cooperative football program based at Xavier Middle School and is composed of players and coaches from Xavier and Fox Valley Lutheran affiliated middle schools of the Fox Valley. Following the 2019 season, when Pop Warner of the Fox Valley made the decision to no longer support 6th and 7th grade football, our Xavier bound 6th and 7th graders were left without a football opportunity. With the support of Xavier's Coach Hinkens and FVL's Coach Jaeger as well as the Xavier administration, and following the tradition of the cooperative Xavier and FVL bound 8th grade team, 6th and 7th grade were incorporated and a new, improved football program was born. Despite the challenges and restrictions we all faced in 2020, the Saints’ inaugural season was a huge success at all three levels, with over 80 families included on the 6th, 7th and 8th teams. Thanks to the dedication of the coaches, parents, and school systems, the Saints were able to complete 17 games between the three grades despite closures of nearby schools and their athletic teams. The program plans on even greater participation in 2021 when the Saints will join with the Great Lakes Independent Football Conference which includes a total of 14 teams from across northeast Wisconsin, locally including Appleton's public school programs (the AYFA) and Hortonville. We are excited about this program greatly enhancing the football experience at the middle school level and providing Xavier’s high school football team with experienced players who have learned the fundamentals of football and have learned to love the game!

English Learner Support Offered Throughout Our System The Xavier System is proud of our rich multicultural student body! Among our 1,500 pupils, we have families from every corner of the globe, speaking languages as varied as Tamil, Chuukese, Nepali, Russian, French, Spanish, Hmong, Farsi, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Twi, Hindi, Malayalam, Filipino, Moore, Morroccan, and Tagalog. This doesn’t even include our international students at Xavier High School, who enrich our student body even further. WOW! For the fifty-some students who qualify under state and federal definitions, the System provides supplemental English Learner (EL) support in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing through a certified EL Teacher. Meanwhile, the students participate fully in the regular education classroom. The benefits of bilingualism for all of our multilingual students, EL and otherwise, are spectacular. According to the Center for Applied Linguistics, children who learn a second language at a young age enjoy more flexible thinking, positive effects on intellectual growth, greater empathy for and relatability with persons of other cultures, more gray matter in the brain, and a head start for college readiness and job opportunities. Not only that, but in the long term, it has also been found to protect against age-related dementia. For our monolingual students, these students demonstrate the “cool factor” of being able to speak another language, and spur them on to achievement in this area. Additionally, having a diverse student body also promotes positive relationships among people of all backgrounds, which is invaluable to us in our Christian faith and modern world. Without a doubt, our students all demonstrate together the glory of God’s creation -- that we are all of us “fearfully and wonderfully made!”

Last spring, Xavier Middle School multilingual students and families helped create the new display gracing our halls, declaring in seven of our families’ languages that we are all “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Next, every student in the school made a star representing himself/herself, reminding us to “shine like stars in the universe, holding fast to the word of life.” (Psalm 139:14, Phillipians 2:15-16)

Thank you helpers Many multilingual and monolingual Xavier students completed a project this fall to thank our local first responders. Together, they created beautiful hearts of many colors for delivery to hospitals, fire stations, and police. The role of an educational technology specialist has taken on increased importance in today’s classrooms. Part of their responsibility is to identify, design, and effectively incorporate technology tools, plans and programing into a school’s learning environment. Here at Xavier Catholic Schools, this important function has been entrusted to the capable hands of Sarah Simon ‘86, who, for the past three years has been an integral part of transforming education through technology. Sarah wears many hats on a daily basis, including technical support, such as troubleshooting and maintaining hardware and software. However, it is working with teachers and students and being in the classroom that gives her the most pleasure as she is quick to point out, “I love being able to work with individual teachers to help them to use technology as a tool to modify the tasks students do so they can collaborate and create in ways that weren't possible back when I was in school”. To say that she keeps busy would be an understatement as on any given day, you may find Sarah in five or six different classrooms interacting with teachers and students. Two years ago Sarah was the driving force behind converting our campuses from outdated smart boards to state of the art promethean boards. In that process she not only led the charge to acquire the boards, played a major role in their installation, but also developed a plan to educate teachers in their uses and capabilities. Today, the results of her hard work are clearly visible as teachers and students are utilizing the equipment to increase engagement and learning. Sarah’s dedication and commitment has always been appreciated by teachers, staff, and families but at no time was her presence and inspiration more evident than when our schools were closed in March of 2020 due to COVID 19 and the Xavier community needed to make a huge transition. She rose to this challenge and helped prepare elementary, middle and high school teachers in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System for remote learning. With a few days’ notice, Sarah arranged a process to distribute laptops to all students and families who needed them, including delivering devices herself. In addition, she created videos to help parents and train teachers in the best way to navigate and adapt to this new and unique environment. During this time much was asked of parents as many were thrust into the role of teacher and technology support specialist for their children. Sarah is quick to point out “our teachers and students (along with their parents) did a great job of adapting and learning new things”. But it was also Sarah’s many late night calls and weekend conversations that helped reassure and inspire the Xavier community. While her official title may be Educational Technology Specialist, her unofficial Xavier name is Educational Hero!

Continuing Missionary Discipleship Amid a Global Pandemic Service is an integral part of the foundation of a Xavier education, and of who we are as Catholics. Amidst a global pandemic, it would have been easy to use distancing guidelines and quarantine as an excuse to pause outreach to the community. Instead, Xavier recognizes the increased need within our community and has found creative (and safe) ways to continue to provide assistance and build relationships at a time when it is needed the most. Individual campuses have adopted different charities to support each month through collecting cash donations and/or supplies. Food drives are constant, with students bringing in canned goods and non-perishable food items to be distributed to local pantries such as St. Joseph’s Food Pantry in Menasha. During the Christmas season, both Xavier Elementary School campuses participated in “Adopt a Family” collections; providing items for school families in need of assistance around the holidays. Students shopped online as a class and purchased items through earnings they made by completing chores at home. Students and their families are participating in the Rice Bowl collection during Lent, and bringing in pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Throughout the school year classes have created cards and decorations to send to nursing home residents during the Halloween, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine’s holidays. At the Marquette St. campus, second graders made cards and decorations for various holidays for residents at a local nursing home. The residents reciprocated with a moving video to the students in honor of Veterans Day. During Catholic Schools Week, students at the McDonald St campus painted cross sun catchers to deliver to nursing home residents. At Xavier Middle School, some students completed service hours at Feeding America as they are still in need of volunteers daily, with social distancing practices and facial coverings required. Others are helping teachers with classroom organization or data entry that is non-confidential. In November, eighth graders participated in a retreat day which focused on human dignity, love of God, and love of neighbor. They listened, prayed, and completed service projects for area non-profits. Groups filled birthday bags, blessing bags, created Thanksgiving cards, decorated Christmas posters, filled laundry detergent pods, made bags of snack mix, and tied blankets. Each group participated in a prayer service planned and led by students. Students at Xavier High School must still complete the minimum service requirement of 20 hours each year. They are present within the parishes, helping decorate for the holidays, offering AV service during Mass, and this year’s Hybrid Homecoming brought on innovative ways for students to connect with family and nursing home residents. Senior Eve Vanden Heuvel ‘21 was featured for her work honoring veterans and educating our youth about veterans. During these unique times, entire families provided help to our neighbors who, in a normal year, would receive assistance on Ethel Moehring Help Your Neighbor Day. We continue to pray for those in our community and around the world who have been affected by the pandemic.

The Show Must Go On...

Pivoting Performing Arts Performances to Ensure Student and Audience Safety Ask almost any educator about this year and you will likely hear the words "challenging", "different", "new", to name a few. While these are obviously true for almost everyone, they are maybe the truest for educators of hands-on and experiential subjects, like the performing arts. Fortunately for Xavier students, our teachers are very creative and energetic! The teachers will tell you that it has not been impossible, but there has been a great deal of extra thought and planning in order to give the students valuable experiences. New spaces utilized, performances changed, contraptions built (visualize a transparent barrier between teacher and student) for lessons, items repurposed (creative ways to cover instrument bells), and all sorts of other modifications—but our teachers did it and our students still get to practice the arts. Each level has made it work at their campus. Band at the elementary level consists of private lessons and the students individually working on a full band piece. The hope is that when spring weather comes, the whole band will be able to play the piece outside together. The middle school music teachers worked collaboratively to prepare a pre-recorded virtual concert. They utilized a script and paired Advent and Christmas music with the nativity story. Photos were included and music students acted as the narrators. In addition, vocal students will participate in an online solo & ensemble festival. Band students will be recording demo videos to showcase instruments for 3rd grade students who are choosing instruments. Rehearsals take place in the band room, auditorium, cafeteria—wherever there is space to spread out! At the high school, the teachers have worked together to optimize use of space. They have been rehearsing on the football field, on the front lawn, in the gyms, in the auditorium, in the theatre lobby, and using every inch of classrooms. Band students use special band masks and bell covers. All three disciplines (band, choir and orchestra) have done virtual clinics with professionals. HawkSwing sent out recordings of Christmas carols to nursing homes in lieu of their usual Christmas caroling tour.

Theater-related classes and productions have been completely re-conceptualized. Students have still learned and put into practice • Spring 2021

different acting techniques, but more for one another than broader audiences. Theater classes have had a significant shift of lesson plans to more in-class work instead of hands-on work due to lack of shows, as well as the auditorium being utilized as an alternative learning space. Theater students can’t practice with lighting and sound options with an auditorium full of learners! In the near future, the Theatre Production class’s production will be filmed and streamed through Xavier’s Box Office. As for the extracurricular theater options, most of the 20-21 shows have been switched to livestream productions. Although this has caused a great deal of extra work, much of it in unfamiliar territory, it is interesting and exciting to learn about producing a new art form. Those involved in "Christmas Stars" and "My Funny Valentine" were thrilled to have the experience of making a film and seeing the end result. When performing arts teachers were asked for technical and procedural information for this article, they couldn’t help themselves and also ended up sharing what we like to call the XavierXperience. Dwelling on the positives: • There is more time to spend on pieces and productions. With recording, there can be singular focus and as many takes as needed. • The kids have been amazing at adapting and trying new things without giving it a second thought. They are truly resilient and have kept us going on the toughest days. • Overall, this has been a tough year. We still, however, are grateful to be making music together in some way. • Throughout the pandemic, I've striven to help the students understand the importance of wringing all the good they can from any given situation. They have had fantastically positive attitudes. • Re-thinking our classes/performances/ productions has provided unexpected and unique opportunities. Students have taken on leadership roles and stretched themselves with writing and composing.

The Xavier Philanthropic Culture in Action

News of tremendous outpouring of generosity quickly spread and an additional group of generous donors wanted to share this spirit. Feeling blessed by the combined efforts and commitment to students, they generated $4,500 in revenue and made the decision to share their gifts with employees in the form of a $25 Downtown Appleton Gift Card. In choosing a Downtown Appleton Gift Card, they felt it was also a show of support for our local businesses and a great way to promote our community. On behalf of all Xavier Catholic Schools employees, X, the Xavier Magazine wishes to thank all those who generously reached out to enrich the lives of others.

Last August a few parents were talking, which turned into brainstorming. They wanted their kids to be able to return to school and appreciated all of the efforts of faculty and staff to make inperson schooling a reality. What they wondered was whether there was anything parents could provide that teachers and staff felt was needed to keep them safe, to aid in teaching, to deal with COVID in general. One of those parents reached out to our Advancement team and together we brainstormed about parents being able to donate to a COVID fund.

This was a beautiful, parent-driven grassroots effort to support our faculty and staff in the System quest to provide in-person learning. These parents reached out to other parents who reached out to others. There was never a general appeal, just concerned parents rallying behind the System they and their students love so that their students could learn in-person, or virtually if necessary, and faculty and staff would have the tools to make it happen.

Xavier is truly blessed by the generosity of Jim and Andrea and their willingness to share their gifts with the Xavier community. The motivation for the gift was to share their appreciation for the work our faculty and staff pours into their jobs on a daily basis. They are particularly thankful and impressed with the passion and commitment that has taken place this year to give our students an in-person education.

In January, Xavier Catholic Schools accepted a donation of a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 truck made by Jim and Andrea Maher and Midwest Car Corporation. This new amazing vehicle replaces the old Xavier truck which has been on its last set of brakes, wheels, and countless other parts for the last few years.

Please join us in thanking the Maher family for including Xavier in their philanthropic efforts. If you happen to pass the vehicle on the road, give a quick honk as additional recognition and thanks.

Advancement collected wish lists from each campus and handled the administrative side. Checks came rolling in. Items were ordered. Faculty and staff felt better and more equipped. It was a win-win and so appreciated. In a matter of a few weeks, the checks totaled just under $10,000. Every faculty and staff request had been fulfilled. Faculty and staff were appreciative not only for the items, but also for the parent support. It meant even more since it was a parent initiative. Families felt good for helping.

After learning of the many gifts that benefactors were making to help purchase instructional supplies and safety equipment a passionate Xavier family wanted to continue the spirit of giving. Wishing to recognize the amazing effort of all Xavier employees, an anonymous donor couple and parents of alumni made an early Christmas gift of $20,000 with the goal of sharing their generosity with others. As an outward sign of their appreciation, the donors gave all 200 faculty and staff members a $100 gift card.

And continues... Many high schools friends exchange small Christmas gifts around the holidays. For Haley Bridges '22, the gift she gave a friend wasn’t so small (monetarily or physically). There are many adjectives to describe the gift—remarkable, selfless, generous, and big, to name a few. Bridges gifted her best friend a car. Yes, you read that correctly, a car. Bridges was the lucky winner of a car at her work Christmas party. The annual Chick-fil-a Christmas party is known for prize drawings and there had been rumors this year’s grand prize was a car. The rumors were true. Before the party, Bridges and some work friends had all talked and agreed that if there was indeed a car and any of them won it, they would give it to friend, Hokule’a Taniguchi. Taniguchi biked to work every day from her home in Neenah, even during the harsh Wisconsin winter weather. Bridges never doubted her decision and gave it to her in part because she felt she needed it more than anyone she knew. Although her mom was initially surprised and a little upset, she soon was proud of the generosity of her daughter. Bridges’ kindness was met with another act of kindness. Her aunt held a fundraiser to get Bridges’ own car paid off. Taniguchi has been paying it forward and has been eager to help others out and give rides when needed.

The entire experience has been life-changing for both girls. We’d like to think that there is more to this story and that all of us can learn from Haley and find our own ways, big and small, to live with a generous heart. 28

School Year 2020-2021: Subject to Change

This has been an unprecedented year, a year in which we have been challenged and a year in which we have grown. Despite some obstacles, Xavier Catholic Schools has risen to the challenge. Our students have been learning in our school buildings for the entire school year! That’s months of seeing their teachers, being with their friends, and being a part of this loving and caring community …every single day. We are beyond grateful for the commitment, sacrifices and dedication of all involved to make this happen. This article will give you just a glimpse of school during a pandemic—Xavier style. During times of adversity, heroes and leaders emerge. Fortunately for our students and families, St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System is blessed with an abundance of each. When schools abruptly went virtual last spring, some of us maybe naively expected that, everyone would be home for a few weeks and then get back to normal. Oh, if we had had that elusive crystal ball! Last summer Xavier administration, leadership, and faculty and staff began to dream of and make real plans for in-person learning. That was the ultimate goal and the only way to give our students the very best. There were countless hours of research, planning, modifying, learning, and maybe not blood, but definitely some sweat and tears. The reward was seeing those smiling faces as masked up students returned to school in August. Yes, you can tell if students are smiling even with masks on; you can see it in their eyes. School started and we all held our breath—would in-person last? Would the plans work? If not, could we modify them on the fly and make it work? We keep hearing that children are resilient (and they are), but what about teachers, staff, families? Everyone has been a rock star. We are humbled, honored, and simply ecstatic to say we continue to learn in-person. Have there been bumps in the road and hiccups along the way? Yes. Has everyone rallied and figured it out? Absolutely. They say you learn the real truth about people and their character in times of crisis and as we, the Advancement team of Xavier Catholic Schools write this article, we couldn’t be more proud of the people and character of all involved with this great school system. • Students are spaced apart. Elementary recesses are staggered so grade levels aren’t mixing. • Parents and parent volunteers are not in the buildings. • Students eat lunch in their classrooms (elementary and middle school), in various assigned spots in the building at the high school. • Every inch of buildings is being used; many teachers are teaching in new spaces, the old library, cafeteria, fitness room, etc. • Aides were hired to help teachers who no longer really get any prep time or breaks throughout the day due to modified schedules. • A distance learning coordinator and distance learning teachers were hired. • Parents stepped up to be hired as classroom aides and substitute teachers in order to have the staff to keep kids in school. • New sanitizing protocols were introduced everywhere. Toys are rotated and cleaned; everything is wiped down; XMS students use a Dawn-water mixture to keep hands clean, the list goes on and on... • Masks are required. • Extraneous furniture was removed to better space desks. • Floors were marked to help students socially distance. • Hallways became one way “streets”. Students at XMS now carry backpacks to minimize locker time in hallway. • Teachers often teach in-person and virtually simultaneously. • Classes have been quarantined on occasion. • High school classes use the split system. Students are in the classroom with the teacher for half of the block and in an alternative learning space connecting with the teacher via technology or doing coursework the other half. • School lunch for all students is currently free (through USDA program). • Students still attend Mass, though sometimes virtually and sometimes in-person. • Parent-teacher conferences are virtual. • Extracurricular activities are still happening, though often with modified schedules and sometimes virtually. • No in-person Christmas programs or concerts. • High school graduation date and location altered.

What hasn’t changed: • Families’ commitment and support • Children’s positive attitudes and desire to learn • Faculty and staff’s unwavering commitment to the students and their education • Everyone’s creativity to make this work 30

Where Are They Now? Featuring Marnie Centen

For some teachers, the retirement path includes relaxing, catching up on reading, or traveling to bucket list destinations. For Xavier's Marnie Centen, the retirement path has led right back to Xavier. Words can hardly begin to describe the legacy which she has given to many of our own. How did it all begin? Marnie came to Xavier in 1978, after teaching Language Arts to seventh and eighth graders at St. Mary's elementary school for five years. She quickly became one of the pillars of a dedicated and widely acclaimed English department, teaching both Honors English and English not only to freshmen, but to sophomores and juniors as well. Former students and others passing by her classroom can distinctly recall the smell of chalk dust drifting into the hall. Diagrammed sentences and other solid foundational skills were etched in every corner of the chalkboards. In 2013, Marnie officially retired but did not put an end to her teaching career. In the fall of that same year, Marnie began subbing at Xavier and has been giving us that expertise ever since. Though she is no longer a full-time teacher, Marnie continues to watch over yet another generation of eager Hawks. Marnie has many reasons for continuing in the classroom, but certainly, the interaction of students and staff along with the presence of second generation students are among her top reasons for continuing. However, "when that third generation of students arrive, then it may be time to really retire." According to Marnie, what makes Xavier unique aside from its faith factor is the feeling that we are all family. Everyone gets to know everyone else, staff and students alike. When something good happens, everyone celebrates. When something bad happens, everyone feels supported. Like the theme song from "Cheers"- it's a place where everyone knows your name. Subbing isn't the only connection Marnie has with Xavier. Marnie has many forever colleagues with whom she still connects: Barb Craghan, Jane Jamison, Jim Pfefferle, Jim Biesterveld, and Carla Oudenhoven. She is also quick to point out that she will always feel the loss of two of the finest men she has ever known, Dennis Oudenhoven and Andy Mahoney. Marnie, on behalf of all students and staff whose paths you have crossed, we are truly grateful for YOU and the legacy of words, of communicating, of meaningful literature that you have given us. Marnie, thank you!!

Long before the days of conference realignment there existed the Fox Valley Christian Conference (FVCC) and if you were a part of it you knew one thing was certain...RIVALRIES MATTERED!

It wasn’t just a game on the schedule: it was bragging rights, it was school spirit, it was school pride and for that one day, it brought a school together and provided some great fun. Unless of course you happened to be on the losing end of one the numerous Xavier unbeaten streaks.

Imagine being a member of a rival school and then being hired to work at Xavier. For these current Xavier employees, they don’t have to imagine. Coming Full Circle: Kristin Sass … "When I was a student at FVL, I considered Xavier to be our archrival – especially during the Apple Bowl! I would have never imagined that God would lead me to teach at Xavier. I am now teaching German in a faith-filled environment in the very same building where I started learning German. What a blessing!" The Meadowlark Effect: Mike Mauthe … "When I accepted the position at Xavier, it felt like a Washington Generals player being named to coach the Harlem Globetrotters. I had spent four years in the dark corner of the Xavier gym watching my guys from SMC struggle against the 'Evil empire'. How could I have known that I would so quickly fall in love with the Xavier community and make it my home for 25 years?" A House Divided: Amy Krull (St. Mary’s Springs)… "It wasn’t my former classmates; it was my family that gave me grief. In the end it’s something like 'keeping it Catholic'."

Keeping the Faith: Tina Johnson… "Being in HR in a private, Catholic, Pre-K thru 12th-grade educational institution is a full-spectrum learning experience. I love the camaraderie that I feel and experience here at Xavier and the comfort of being able to openly practice my faith in my job. I still connect with people I know from my alma mater (St. Mary Central) and reminisce about people we both know and where they are now."

I remember seeing Coach Hyland at a track meet and he jokingly commented that I should be wearing royal blue, not navy blue. I was actually surprised that he remembered me! God has blessed me immensely by giving me the opportunity to teach here." J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets!: Sara Meyer…"It makes me smile to reminisce back to the FVCC days… There was always an increased intensity when we played the Xavier Hawks. For some reason, we wanted to beat them more than any other. Our teams competed hard against each other as did our student sections! When my husband and I settled in Appleton, we looked at high school options for our kids. Touring Xavier High School felt like touring Chicago's Soldier Field...nice place, but...It didn't take long, though. This great community welcomed this Roncalli Jet right in as a parent and faculty member. I now work in the old FVL building where I cheered the Jets to victory many times! And our 4th Xavier Hawk child will graduate in May. I am very proud to be a Xavier Hawk. It has been fun to talk to colleagues and parents who remember the intensity of the old FVCC. Unfortunately, we don't all have our facts right. One colleague who is a Xavier grad said he remembers Roncalli Jet track runners throwing elbows out which I am sure was not true. :) Great banter and memories! We Are Grateful He Answered God's Call Vocation is at the heart of the Catholic Church. Since the first days of the Apostles’ mission, the Church has depended on selfless servant leaders to dedicate their life to God through serving the community and providing the sacraments. The challenge, of course, is discerning one’s vocation. Am I called to married life? To become a religious sister? The single life? How about becoming a priest? For Fr. Jim Leary, pastor at

immediately that his strengths were elsewhere. “I’m not much of a salesman,” reports Fr. Jim. Parish ministry, however, has been an immeasurable success. With the exception of 6 years spent as the director of the Capuchin soup kitchen in Detroit, the city’s largest soup kitchen, Fr. Jim has been a parish leader ever since. He came to Appleton in 2010, serving as pastor of both St. Mary’s and St. Joe’s for a while and then continuing on exclusively with the community of St. Joseph. Fr. Jim is the latest in a long line of Capuchin pastors at the parish; the Capuchin Franciscans have served St. Joseph’s Parish and the city of Appleton since 1877. Among their lasting contributions are the St. Joseph Food Pantry, an overnight shelter for the homeless, and ministry to prisoners and those recently released from jail. Father Jim is a perfect fit at St. Joseph and at Xavier. He is a man of simplicity and humility, a blue collar “everyman” who is deeply honored to share in the happy and sad moments in the lives of his parishioners. Kathy Hansen Bates '71, Xavier High

St. Joseph Parish and steadfast supporter of Xavier and Catholic education, answering the call to priesthood has been a fulfilling path of joys and memories. As a young man in Stevens Point, Father Jim was educated in Catholic schools; he went to St. Stephen’s School and then to Pacelli High School before enrolling in St. Lawrence Seminary as a junior in high school. What led him to the seminary? Was the voice of God calling him at an early age? Actually, it was something much closer to home - his older brother had taken the path and young Jim figured that must be the way things were done. He was immediately impressed by the Capuchin Franciscans who taught and led at St. Lawrence, an influence that would later illuminate his own path. When his brother decided to become a Capuchin priest, Fr. Jim once again followed in his footsteps. Before he knew it, Fr. Jim was committing to a life of simple, humble service to the Capuchin order and the worldwide Church. His priestly ministry began with the task of recruiting people to the seminary. While he did his best, he knew

Given his history with Catholic education and servant leadership, it should be no surprise that Fr. Jim is a regular on campus at Xavier. He is always generous in offering Masses and being present for class reconciliation opportunities. Fr. Jim also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Xavier Catholic School System. His love for Catholic education and support of Xavier can be seen in the way he encourages any St. Joseph family who wants a Xavier education to see him if they need extra help or support.

Thank you to our supporting parishes! We are blessed to receive 19% of our financial support from our eight Appleton parishes and 15 regional partner parishes.

Fr. Jim’s relationship with Xavier grew most through being a fan of Xavier athletics. On most fall and winter evenings, if there is a game happening at Xavier, Fr. Jim is there. For many years, Fr. Jim and Arnie VandenBoomen H‘16 would take their seats in the far corner of the bleachers to cheer on the Hawks. After Arnie passed away, Fr. Jim continued his fandom. Whether offering a pre-game prayer or reflecting on the quality of that night’s officiating, Fr. Jim is a staple of Xavier sporting events. One of his favorite moments was being present at Graduation in 2016 when Arnie was made an honorary Xavier alumnus. All of the qualities that Fr. Jim admired in Arnie - his selfless attitude, quiet generosity, and unwavering integrity - are equally true of Fr. Jim himself. His influence at Xavier and in Appleton is massive.

School athletic director and a parishioner at St. Joe’s, describes him as “the personification of ‘What Would Jesus Do?’ and a man who lives his life in a way that sets an example for our students and our parish.” His gentle manner and sense of humor make him popular with the Xavier High School students as well; many of them encourage their families to attend Sunday Mass at St. Joe’s because Fr. Jim connects with them on their faith journeys.

“Today, many people probably think that the priesthood is a lonely existence with lots of things you have to give up and not much to fulfill you. I can only say that my experience is exactly the opposite. I could not imagine being more fulfilled than I am. ”Thank you, Fr. Jim Leary, for your example, your leadership, and your love for Xavier. Dear Xavier Catholic School Community, With the close of a unique year, one that has been challenging and even painful for so many, we at Xavier Catholic Schools continue to be profoundly thankful to our entire community. COVID-19 presented us with a great deal of uncertainty but I am humbled by how our administrators, teachers, and staff pivoted to online learning and eventually in-person education. I am appreciative for the academic and emotional support that our families and parents provide at home. I am amazed by the resiliency of our students, who with the support of the Xavier community, continue to grow, learn, and prepare to meet the future. Most importantly, I am grateful for our benefactors who continued to provide financial support in the midst of the uncertain economic environment. In my time as Vice President of Advancement here at Xavier, I have come to understand that community is at the core of all that we do. It has become obvious that each of our benefactors, business partners, and friends loves Xavier. It is through this love and your continued prayers, generosity and investment that we are able to fulfill our mission and chart the course for the next chapter in our history.

Gifts of any dollar amount made to the Xavier Foundation are accepted toward any of the existing funds listed below. Athletic Fund Established to Honor Coach Dave “Abomb” Adamovich

On Sunday May 10, 2020 the Xavier community lost a coach, a friend, and a great human being when Dave Adamovich passed away. Affectionately known as “Abomb” to the Xavier student athletes, Dave was heavily involved in Xavier Athletics for the past 15 years. His coaching resume included being the head coach for Xavier Powerlifting along with serving as an assistant football and track and field coach. His 2017 powerlifting team was crowned State Champions. Dave’s gifts and talents were constantly on display and he touched the lives of countless individuals through his tenure at Xavier. Among his many duties, Dave oversaw the summer weightlifting program, designed team fitness programs for individual sports, and coordinated numerous Xavier Booster Club activities. In recognition for his many years of volunteer service, Dave was named the Xavier Booster Club Red Smith Service Award winner in 2015. As a tribute to his amazing work and leadership with the student athletes at Xavier, the David Adamovich Athletic Fund has been established. The purpose of this fund is to provide support to the Xavier Athletic Department with special consideration being given to the fitness center. Dave will be missed more than can be imagined but his influence on Xavier will be felt for years to come.

Anna Vosters Donnermeyer '90 Memorial Scholarship Fund

Martin Family Establishes Scholarship The Xavier community extends their deepest sympathies to the Martin Family on the loss of Anna Lynn Martin, who passed away at St. Vincent Children’s Hospital on June 7, 2020. She had just graduated from Xavier Middle School and was looking forward to joining her classmates at Xavier High School in the fall as a member of the Class of 2024. Anna was known for her kind heart and always being willing to help a fellow student in need. She loved outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and kayaking as well as playing lacrosse, skiing, and bike rides. Her long-term plans were to become a teacher or counselor specializing in assisting children with disabilities. Anna’s mother, Jennifer Martin ’97, and her grandparents, Robert Sr. and Lynn Martin, have established a scholarship to honor her life. The fund is named the Martin Family Endowed Fund and will provide tuition assistance/scholarships to students attending Xavier Middle School. Please remember the Martin family in your prayers.

Catholic Club Scholarship Fund Established The St. Francis Xavier Catholic Schools Foundation is pleased to announce that it was recently the beneficiary of a major gift donated by the “Catholic Club Association” to establish a scholarship fund to provide tuition assistance to students at the high school, middle school, and elementary levels. Not familiar with the Catholic Club Association?

The Brad Donnermeyer family along with the Xavier community has established a college scholarship fund to honor the life of Anna (Vosters) Donnermeyer ‘90 who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer in May 2020. Anna graduated as valedictorian from Xavier High School in 1990 and went on to graduate from St. Norbert College with high honors. Anna and her husband Brad have three sons Noah ‘24, Kolbe ‘27, and Lucas ’31. Being a wife and mother were her dream come true. Anna was an active member of St. Thomas More Parish and, through her work in young adult and youth ministry, she touched the lives of countless individuals. Her strong faith and gentle nature allowed her to connect with young people and impact their faith. She was a true Catholic role model who loved her faith community at St. Thomas More as well as her Xavier family. She always treated everyone with kindness and her smile made others feel loved and respected. The goal of the scholarship is to honor Anna’s memory and to continue to inspire the next generation of faith leaders and parents. This scholarship will be awarded each year to a Xavier senior who demonstrates service to his/her local parish, his/her community, and treats others in a Christ-like manner. This $500 scholarship can be used to offset the cost of college tuition and applications will be available on the Xavier website.

The Catholic Club Association has existed since 1944 as an organization that supported Catholic education and leadership development. The Catholic Club also owned and operated the ever popular Forester restaurant located on Spencer Street and Highway 41. This establishment was known for delicious fish fries, weddings, and countless local organizational meetings. After selling the building, the group continued to function and over the years gave gifts and support to local parishes to help fund Catholic education in Appleton. Over the past few years, then Director of Foundation Giving, Brian Wallace and Catholic Club Association Treasurer Marty Van Stippen began discussion of the possibility of transferring its funds to the Xavier Foundation if the organization ceased to exist. In December of 2019, a gift of $22,000 was made to the Xavier Foundation and in October of 2020, the Catholic Club Association Board of Directors voted to dissolve the Association and donate the remainder of the funds, $368,000, to the Xavier Foundation. The Xavier Foundation and the entire Xavier community would like to thank the Catholic Club Association for its generosity and support. Its generosity and passion for Catholic education will provide students and families the gift of a Xavier education for years ahead.

Scholarship Honors a True Servant Leader The Xavier community lost a true friend and supporter when Dr. Francis Van Lieshout H’11 passed away in September of 2020. “Dr. Van” was a lifetime Xavier Foundation Board member and was named as an Xavier High School Honorary Alumnus in 2011. He was a humble servant of the Lord and the community and known for his volunteer work and staunch support of Catholic education. He and his wife Jo, whom he always thanked as the reason for his success, were the parents of seven children, all of whom attended Catholic school: Susan Kelly, David Van Lieshout, John Van Lieshout, Monica Van Lieshout, Mary Van Lieshout, Paul Van Lieshout, and Ellsbeth McGowan ‘79. Over his career, he delivered over 2,500 babies, gave free physicals to student athletes, provided free medical care to widows, and was on constant call to serve others. Dr. Van was famous for not taking appointments, but seeing everyone in order of need, and at the same time knowing them all by name. After retiring from medicine, the people of Little Chute honored his life of service by dedicating a community park in his name. In addition, he was proud of being inducted into the St. John’s Athletic Hall of Fame, his honorary appointment to the Little Chute Volunteer Fire Department and the Affinity Theda Care award for volunteer work at St. Vincent De Paul. Before his passing, Dr. Van established the Josephine and Dr. Francis Van Lieshout Scholarship Fund within the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Schools Foundation to support tuition assistance. Xavier Catholic Schools is blessed to have been a part of his life and looks forward to carrying on his legacy of service to others.

Xavier Mourns the Passing of a Trailbrazer In the summer 2020 issue, Donald and Gladys Wisnefski were featured in a new ‘Where Are They Now?’ section that highlights retired Xavier Catholic Schools faculty and staff. We are sad to share the news of Senora Wisnefski’s unexpected passing in February. Gladys taught Spanish at Xavier High School from 1969 to 1990, inspiring hundreds of students and their families during her decades of service. Please keep Don, her son Stephen ’86, and family in your thoughts and prayers. A trailblazing educator and award-winning scholar, Mrs. Wisnefski's impact on all those who had the privilege of learning from her was significant. Many former students said she changed their lives, opening up previously unimaginable possibilities. She encouraged and supported students well after they were in her classroom. Mrs. Wisnefski established student exchange programs in the 1970s and 1980s with schools in Guatemala and Colombia, uncommon destinations at the time but also uncommonly rich cultural experiences. She also regularly led trips to Spain. A celebration of Mrs. Wisnefski's life is being planned for summer. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to a college scholarship fund that has been established in her name at Xavier High School. The scholarship will recognize outstanding achievement in the study of a foreign language and encourage recipients to pursue further studies in language and international affairs.

Jeremy Janssen '99 Memorial Fund Established On November 3, 2019, Xavier alumnus Jeremy Janssen passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Jeremy and his wife Becky shared a love of music, travel, and were determined to make the most out of life. Those who knew him well speak of his heart of gold, his zest for relentless fun, a quick wit and his having the patience of a saint. The son of Jerry and Judy Janssen, Jeremy graduated in 1999 and had a passion for basketball and golf. Both of his siblings, Heather ’94 and Chris ’02 attended Xavier and his entire family believed in the Xavier mission and played an important role in the community. After graduation, Jeremy attended Marquette University where he earned both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Engineering. The Janssen Family has established the Jeremy Janssen Memorial Fund in his name. The primary purpose of the fund is to provide additional support to academics at Xavier High School with special preference going to the areas of math and science. The Xavier Catholic Schools Foundation helps fund Chromebooks for K-8th Grade On June 17th the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation approved a $63,000 disbursement from the Herbert & Elva Dorn K-12 Support Fund for the purchase of new Chromebooks. This generous gift allows every student in Kindergarten through 8th grade to have access to an individual device and complements the high school “bring your own device” policy. In making the decision, the Foundation wanted to help enhance student/teacher access to technology in light of the current COVID pandemic and prepare for the possibility of virtual learning at any given time. In approving the proposal, the Xavier Foundation felt this was a critical opportunity to serve our students. The total cost of this funding initiative was $135,000 and included the purchase of 323 Chromebooks, ClassLink, single sign on to web applications, along with warranties and licensing. The Xavier Catholic School system is grateful for the Foundation’s willingness to support the Xavier tradition of excellence and help keep pace with an ever changing technology market.

XAVIER DAY May 7, 2021

Xavier Day celebrates five years! In the event’s fifth year, we are excited to announce a week of celebration leading up to the official Xavier Day. There are so many great things going on at Xavier Catholic Schools, we need more than just one day to celebrate with our Xavier family. Specifics of the week are still evolving at print time, but each of our campuses will have a day that is focused specifically on that campus: Tuesday we will showcase the Xavier Elementary School, Xavier Middle School will be highlighted on Wednesday, Xavier High School on Thursday, and Friday, on the official “Xavier Day”, we celebrate the entire System! Xavier Week will end with our inaugural “What Moves You” event. Originally scheduled this past fall, “What Moves You” was postponed to May 8 due to rising COVID-19 cases in the Fox Cities. It will be a great continuation of our celebration! Xavier Day is an opportunity for our parents, alumni, dedicated faculty and staff, current and future students, friends of the Xavier community, and newest alumni: the seniors graduating on May 28, to join us to celebrate and support Xavier Catholic Schools.
