A Xavier Welcome! Award-Winning Artist Back to School Color Run Club Invention

St. Francis Xavier School System Mission Statement St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System is a Christ-centered community dedicated to faith formation, academic excellence, community engagement, and individual growth of our students in a safe environment.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Xavier Family, We have finished a great first semester for the 2021-2022 school year! We were blessed to start the year with our students in school, in person, every day. As a system, we have been faced with difficult decisions such as masking, social distancing and other considerations, but have remained resolute to keep our students safe and in school. Despite these challenges, we have much to be thankful for as we continue to treasure the everyday occasions to celebrate our students and their many achievements. The Xavier System moved at full speed this fall. All of our fall sports teams had strong seasons, with fans in the stands. We were able to celebrate homecoming with all of the traditional activities, including the annual parade! In addition, we held weekly Masses at each of our campuses, and had another incredible fall theater production, All Together Now. As we move forward we look ahead to a full slate of winter activities. The Lord is good, and we are blessed to have so many opportunities to return to some semblance of a normal life for our school community. As you read through this issue of X, the Xavier Magazine, you will read numerous stories of success and dedication to the Xavier system. We are fortunate to have an incredible staff of skilled educators, selfless volunteers, dedicated alumni, and supportive pastors and parishes who help ensure that the Xavier System meets our mission to prepare our students with an outstanding Catholic education and the highest academic standards to carry them on to college and beyond. We are thankful to you- our alumni, our benefactors, and our families and friends- for your continued prayers and financial support. We are grateful for your steadfast loyalty, and your unwavering support of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System. Please keep us in your prayers as we continue to work to fulfill the mission of Catholic education! Yours in Christ,

Phil Riley President

What's My Name?! This fall, the Hawk went on a search to find a name. While “Hawk” sufficed for the last six decades, something a little more personal seemed like an appropriate wish. After all, each of us are given a name at birth, so why did Hawk have to wait so long? The Hawk visited car lines, took to social media, and launched a campaign to find a name to fit. Students, parents, alumni, benefactors, and friends of the Xavier community were invited to submit their suggestions for Hawk’s name. The Xavier community provided a wonderful list of 252 suggestions from which to choose! After discussing the list, and then narrowing it down, a committee of Xavier supporters left the final decision in the wings of the Xavier family. Soon, the votes were tallied and the Hawk finally had an official name.

We are excited to introduce to you,

Frankie the Hawk! Frankie’s name was submitted by four different Xavier supporters. A special thank you to Julie Sabish, Charlotte Biechler ’31, Michael Jerger, and Cori (Vanderloop) Gendron ’86 for the great name suggestion!

Dr. Richard Ponschock ’65 published the book 1984 Has Arrived (ISBN 9798520662068), available on Amazon. The book tells a fictional tale of Jeremy and his enlightenment/concerns in current times as related to George Orwell's book 1984 and its philosophical tenets. As Jeremy prepares to chair a critical federal oversight committee, his thoughts revert to his transformational journey during his college years. The fictional aspects of 1984 appear to come to life through real-world news and actions. While Jeremy is a fictional character, all of the attributions of “real life" actions are nonfictional and derived from various news reports and sources throughout his journey. The intent is for the reader to experience what Jeremy experienced (and what you might be experiencing each day). While fictional, the book's goal is to be thought-provoking.

Rita (Deprez) Parker ’67 and her husband, Jerry, celebrated 50 years of marriage on November 26, 2020. In lieu of a large gathering or formal Mass, the couple renewed their vows in front of St. Joseph Church after morning Mass. Despite the challenge of the pandemic, they look at the positives “We began our life together as a couple and we remain a couple 50 years later” said Rita. Together Rita and Jerry have two children and six grandkids.

They began dating in 2004 as freshmen and when they married in 2014, it was only fitting they held their ceremony at the Xavier High School Fine Arts Theater. Both attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where Corey graduated with a Bachelor's in Business and Jenn with a Bachelor's in Liberal Studies and Communication with Cum Laude honors. While Corey works in management, Jenn is an independent travel and content writer for Go Valley Kids, ThedaCare and the Wisconsin Historical Society. From Atari to PS4, Press Start is home to an impressive stock of consoles, games, accessories and is an illimitable gateway to thousands of nostalgic game boxes. After briefly attending the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, VanGompel was inspired to employ his prior experience working in a game store to open Press Start. Since its launch in 2015, VanGompel has strived to fine tune his reputation among the gaming community and collector scene, and his efforts have proven to be rewarding. Along with local customers, many regularly drive in from Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee and as far as Minnesota and upper Michigan to shop. As Press Start’s popularity has grown, VanGompel has also recognized the need to expand. Currently, the store is doubling their square footage to be able to provide more services, display additional inventory and to offer a more comfortable shopping experience for their customers. As he envisions future growth, VanGompel ultimately hopes to make his way to become a premier brick and mortar retro video game store known throughout the Midwest. Racing Around the World and into Hearts If you spend fifteen minutes with Claudia Gruett ‘17, you will likely learn that she is full of enthusiasm and truly loves her faith. Even more, her smile will radiate when asked about “The World Race.” I had the fortune of meeting up with Claudia shortly before her adventures began and continue to follow her journey through her blog updates. This past August, Gruett began a year of service with The World Race, an interdenominational faithbased program. The program invites twenty some things to come together to serve communities in need. Over a span of eleven months, her group will be traveling to eleven different countries to serve various communities. The organization partners with different established groups around the world to provide short-term assistance in reaching their objectives. Racers help in many ways - they may be physically building a worship space, ministering to children in an orphanage, or everything in between. They live out of their backpacks and in communities to immerse themselves and have the opportunity to really understand the plight of those they are there to help. Before leaving, Gruett discussed her journey leading up to her call to race, sharing that it was a funny story. Her story first began during high school, where she had a life-changing experience during the March for Life. Claudia’s friend, Abby Tschimperle ‘17, invited her on the trip, where Gruett recalls being stuck on the turnpike for hours during “snowmageddon.” While the trip was anything but ordinary, Gruett returned back to Washington, D.C. her senior year for the March, hoping for a smoother experience. In turn, the journey deepened her faith and offered her a more profound way of thinking. Following her senior year, Gruett felt inspired to get more involved with her faith before heading off to college. As she prayed about it in the chapel, Ms. Kelly Wilda ‘00 (now Mrs. Waters) happened to email a small group of individuals about a new, faith-based opportunity called the San Damiano Encounter. Though she was included in the mass email by chance, Gruett was grateful and it became another incredible experience for her and helped enrich her faith even more. Her faith remained an integral part of her life while studying music education at Butler University in Indiana. By the time she was finishing college, Gruett was in search of even more opportunity and adventure. After much discernment, she applied and was accepted into The World Race. Gruett details her journey on her blog, which readers can follow by visiting www.claudiagruett. theworldrace.org. There, supporters can virtually and spiritually join her journey, be treated to inspiring reflections, fun videos and amazing pictures documenting her experiences. Xavier wishes her the best and cannot wait to see where life takes her on “the World Race” and beyond!

A CALL TO CULTIVATE A THRIVING FAITH By: Sue Krings and Shannan Hartel ‘15 From Chicago to Battle Creek and beyond, Father Jim Jugenheimer moved around frequently as a child. Despite many relocations, one aspect that has not changed has been his call to faith. Father Jim’s first hint of his future priesthood began when he was an infant and his grandmother held him in her arms. “He will be a priest someday!” she said with enthusiasm. Later, another nudge into priesthood came when he worked in a factory for a year before college. At the time, his future was still unknown. Father Jim wrote to different religious orders that he found listed in Catholic Digest. Amazingly, a monastery in Philadelphia answered and welcomed him. For two years, he stayed there, dedicating his time as a monk, trying to decipher what God wanted for him. Soon after, he began to teach religion at a Catholic high school in Philadelphia and began a service period teaching media classes. Together with his students, he was in charge of a live TV show that aired for fifteen minutes during homeroom each day. The responsibility included making sets and putting together blue screens; Father Jim made sure to encourage his students to be hands on. During his twelve years of teaching, he taught his students the ins and outs of media production well. (During the pandemic, his knowledge was brought to a new level.) Drawing on experience, Fr. Jim used the equipment that he brought with him to celebrate virtual Masses while we were quarantined at home. For the span of the difficult months, his expertise and technological aptitude are what created the virtual Masses, helping many get closer to Jesus. In 2003, after his service to teaching, he spoke to his bishop about returning to Wisconsin, where he hoped to be closer to family. He relocated to Manitowoc county, where he served in two parishes. Father Jim then moved to Oshkosh where he had to merge three parishes into one. He spent ten years there before moving to St. Pius X, where he remains today. Along with being a priest, Father Jim enjoys gardening, which is evident through his giant vegetable garden outside of the rectory. Spending time at his cottage is also special for him, as he dedicated many hours of labor to build it himself. Naturally, his faith also remains an intricate part of his day as is giving advice to those on their faith journeys. Father Jim encourages those considering a religious life and those who are unsure what their next path should be to really get to know Jesus. “Enter into a real relationship with him...Jesus is our closest friend,” he said. “By really getting to know Jesus, it’s not about the facts,” he said, “it’s about having that conversation with Jesus and having Him in our life constantly.” After 34 years as a priest, his most important piece of advice was to make every decision in a way to give honor to Jesus.

We’re Stronger Together! The Environmental/ Pay It Forward Club join forces

The Environmental Club has been a club at Xavier High School for many years. Likewise, the Pay It Forward Club, with the help of Mrs. Nina Salzwedel, was a COVID shutdown brainchild of students in AP Biology. The two clubs joined forces last year to build a stronger club focused on education and service to the community. The new club combo has certainly made an impact!

The club aims to bring environmental awareness to students and to give them the opportunity to take on an active role to help the environment and to pay it forward to future generations. In its inaugural year as a combined club, club members worked to educate students about common environmental issues throughout the year. Emphasis was placed on the holiday season since the beautiful time of year also creates additional environmental challenges. The club greeted the season with its “Twelve Days of Environmental Facts” to call attention to the issue at hand, reaching beyond the thrill of pretty paper, curled ribbons and stacks of boxes. Another major focal point for the club was Earth Day. The club hosted a week of activities including: • A Nature Photoshoot Contest • Footprint Art, in part of a “Three Small Steps” assignment • Prayers for the Planet with a Bible lesson • A Recycling Game and QR Scavenger Hunt Xavier students enjoyed Earth Day cookie treats and learned about eco-friendly foods with a plant-based meatball taste test in Mrs. Kelli McGreevy’s Foods class. The informative week was capped off with a garbage pick-up. The club is stronger together and periodically organizes park clean-ups, too. In the future, they hope to include compost bins, a hydroponics lab, and solar panels.

How YOU Can Make a Xavier Difference! For the 2021-22 school year, the theme is plastic bag waste. The club will be working with NexTrex and participating in a plastic bag recycling contest. There will be a drop off area at Xavier High School in hopes of collecting plastic bags. The bags will be recycled to create a bench from the recycled waste. The contest will run from November to April. The goal is to collect around 40,500 bags, which is around 500lbs. of plastic! Follow the club on Instagram at XHS_Thinks_Green!

Faith and Families Shine at Xavier Families choose to join the Xavier Catholic School System for a variety of reasons. Whether they find it fits their lifestyle, nourishes their faith, or helps support unique family values, being a part of such a tight-knit group is a blessing. For many, like the Laguna-Ramirez family, the unwavering connection to Xavier runs deep and their involvement in the System encourages their two children to shine.

(left to right) Erika, Mauricio ‘27, John ‘29 and Joel Laguna-Ramirez

The family, which includes parents Joel and Erika, and their two children, Mauricio ‘27 and John ‘29, formally joined the Xavier community in the fall of 2020. After hearing about Xavier, its atmosphere, and excellent faith-based curriculum, they felt their decision to enroll was paramount. “For Joel and I, it was important for us to be able to instill Catholic values in our children,” said Erika Laguna-Ramirez, “our experience with Xavier Catholic Schools has had a tremendous impact on our family.” The family was first introduced to Xavier through soccer coach Mike Romenesko ‘99 and soon realized their System connection would extend beyond the field. “Our interest in Xavier schools started after our boys joined wonderful soccer families,” recalled Laguna-Ramirez.

Both of Laguna-Ramirez’s sons are celebrated members of the Small Town FC Magic team. “We were fortunate enough to have Mauricio and Jonathan join our team in 2017,” said coach Mike Romenesko, “I am beyond thrilled to know that the relationships formed between the Lagunas and our Xavier families through soccer played a small role in June 2021 Chicagoland Tournament Champs! John ‘29 (second from the left) and Mauricio ’27 (center), their decision to join Xavier.” Coach Mike Romenesko ‘99 (standing back right) Romenesko has coached the team, which includes his own son, since the players were in preschool. Though comprised mostly of Xavier boys, the

team isn’t just geared solely around skill and sport. “There’s so much more to this team than just training soccer players at a high level,” said Romenesko, “I often remind them that this is also about learning how to create and maintain friendships, how to respect one another, and to ultimately help them grow up to be well-rounded young men.” Along with helping to promote a strong faith foundation and core values, Romenesko reflects back to his own days as a soccer player when his father, Rick Romenesko Sr. '71 was the coach. “The same formula was used by my father in the late 90’s when he was the varsity coach at Xavier,” said Romenesko. At the time, several families joined the school following their experience with the soccer club team, just like the Laguna-Ramirez family has now. “The people have changed but the philosophy still stands,” said Romenesko, “families were able to see the value in the Xavier community, its excellence and what it represents and thus decided to make a change for their kids.” Beyond the soccer field, Xavier offers its students the opportunity of a lifetime to connect through Christ and receive an exceptional education. The skills and lessons obtained will not only help them to lead fulfilling lives, but will prepare them for a successful future. Laguna-Ramirez agreed, “sending our children through the Xavier Catholic School System has been one of the best decisions we have ever made.”

Soccer Anyone? A New Option for XMS Athletes! Xavier Middle School students had a brand new school sport option this fall – soccer! Eighteen seventh and eighth grade girls and boys joined in the fun and, boy, did they have fun. Coach Trent Seaborn was assisted by XHS girls’ soccer coach, John Meyer, and Vada Baksys '23, XHS soccer player. The new team practiced twice a week and played three games in its inaugural season. They went undefeated and the defense never had a single goal scored against them! In addition to great play, the students had great experiences. They got to play their games on the high school soccer field under the lights, complete with announcers and music. They received the full high school game experience and almost every athlete said they planned to go out for soccer in high school. That was another big win for the coaching staff as that was one of the goals for the season. Another was having the students bond. The team brought together students from different friend groups and different grades; they bonded and formed new friendships—always a positive thing in life, but maybe especially in middle school.

Sometimes, a Happy Ending! by Anne Baruth

In 1996, Nick Romenesko ‘02 was in my sixth grade art class at the old 'St. Joe's Middle School' building on West Lawrence Street near St. Joseph Catholic Church. This was the name and location of Xavier Middle School in those days. The class assignment: create an oil pastel painting with a central person and meaningful background. Color theory was included. Nick made a portrait of himself as an adult playing soccer – he even added facial hair as he mapped out his imagined future life. For some reason, Nick left his masterpiece behind - and for all these years, I couldn't see fit to toss it. Besides, it was a great example to share with other students when we do this unit. It always elicited genuine ‘ooh’s’ and ‘aahs’! Sometimes I wondered what happened to my former, talented, soccer loving student! This year, 2021, on locker night, I received the answer when a sixth grader, Wally Romenesko ‘28, showed up in my room with his mother, Beth. Sure enough, Nick is Wally’s uncle! I quickly found Nick’s childhood painting and asked if they would please deliver it to him … and yes, they said they would! Beth said Nick is now a dentist in Brillion. He and his wife, Rachel, have three daughters: Fiona ‘32, second grade; Victoria ‘35, 4K – both at St. Francis Xavier Elementary McDonald Street campus. Third daughter, Elise, is two years old. Beth’s husband, Rick, took the treasured oil pastel to Nick within a couple of days – and here is a photo of that special reunion! Nick was happy to have the painting back – and is happy to share this special story with you as well. Indeed, sometimes, a happy ending!

WELCOME! - THE XAVIER WAY

Each year, over 125 new Xavier students wake up on the first day of school to a personalized greeting, a “Welcome to Xavier” yard sign. It is all part of a tradition which first started at Catholic Central elementary school and has since expanded to include any student and family new to Xavier Catholic Schools. For the past 15 years, parent volunteer Keri McCormick has played a large part in making this annual tradition a truly memorable one. Since taking over for Kari Voissem, Keri and her crew of volunteers visit each family residence after dark the night before the first day of school and place a sign in their yard. To personalize them, balloons are attached to the sign with the child(ren)’s name written on each. When the family is ready to part with the sign, they return it to their child’s campus for use the next school year, using the fun term “recycled sunshine.” Planning is no easy task. On average, it takes 30 volunteers, often current parents, parents of alumni, or faculty and staff, to dedicate an evening delivering the signs. Fortunately, the preparation over the years has changed with improved mapping technology. The time and dedication spent by Keri and her team is certainly worth it. The excitement and surprise on the student faces when they see their sign on the first day of school is a great way to welcome them to the Xavier family!

Our Very Own Award-Winning Artist!

Lynn Trinity Pereira ‘32, a 2nd grade student at the XESMarquette Street campus, is now an award-winning artist! Pereira’s artwork was one of 24 chosen nationally from the National Missionary Childhood Association, which is a branch of the Pontifical Missions of the Society of the Faith. Pereira originally submitted the artwork to The Compass last Christmas when the theme was “What did Mary sing to baby Jesus? What music or musical did the angels sing at Bethlehem? And what did it all look like?” National artwork winners are typically invited for a Mass, private tour and luncheon at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. It is not yet known if that will take place this year. Pereira’s winning artwork will be available as free shareable digital Christmas greetings beginning the first week of Advent 2021 at mission.org, the MCA site. Congratulations Lynn and thank you for sharing your talents with everyone! 26

Back to School Fun with the Principals! Each August, elementary families are welcomed to school for the opportunity to gather for a fun evening out to meet with friends, teachers, and their campus principal! This year, the Xavier Elementary Marquette Street Campus held a “Meet the Principal” event. Students joined their principal, Mrs. Laura Barnett, on the playground and burned off some energy! Families from the Xavier Elementary McDonald Street Campus also hosted an event, a “Picnic with the Principal.” Students and their families nibbled on burgers, hot dogs, and chips on the lawn, played on the playground and enjoyed meeting their peers and principal, Mrs. Alena Tapelt '96. Returning students were excited to reconnect with friends after summer break and the newest members of the Xavier family got to meet their classmates. Both events were enjoyed by all and were a wonderful kick off to the 2021-2022 school year!

COLOR RUN... BRING ON THE FUN! Xavier Elementary Home and School Association (HSA) held its third annual Color Run at Xavier Middle School on September 23rd. Hundreds of students and their families enjoyed this community building event. Frankie the Hawk attended to cheer on Xavier’s smallest Hawks. Faculty and staff eagerly volunteered their evening to line the course route and decorate the students with colorful powder as they ran past. The event concluded with everyone in the middle of the field for one final “color blast.” The Color Run also acted as a fundraiser for HSA which offers various support for the elementary faculty and staff such as classroom supplies, conference and in-service meals, appreciation gifts, Thankful Thursdays, and treats on holidays. The organization also hosts many school and family events throughout the year. A special thank you to the Color Run committee for all your hard work to make this such a memorable event for the kids!

Club Invention Encourages Imagination and Innovation Six years ago, Mrs. Nicole Jedwabny was approached to be the director of “Camp Invention”, a weeklong camp during the summer hosted by Xavier Elementary School. This fall, she decided to incorporate Club Invention, an afterschool program created by the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF), the same creators of Camp Invention. Mrs. Jedwabny was surprised at the number of students who signed up, there were so many that they had to open another session creating a total of 50 students! The course is open to all students in the Fox Valley area but the majority are from Xavier’s two elementary campuses. The courses were led by St. Francis Xavier’s very own, Mrs. Nicole Jedwabny and Mrs. Beth Mares, on Mondays after school for five weeks. In each Club Invention session, children can let their imagination run wild while exploring connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation! In these two groups, students have been participating in a program called “Bolder Builders”, packed with creative problem solving, innovation, and STEM. Children have been asked to join an engineer, architect and builder to restore a town devastated by hurricanes and earthquakes! They take on the challenge to build stronger bridges and better buildings using inspiration from nature, and the inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame! St. Francis Xavier is excited to share the successes of Club Invention, packed with so many fun activities that the children don’t even realize they are learning standard-aligned curriculum! Be on the lookout for more Club Invention sessions to come before the end of the year, as well as next spring so that you can get your child(ren) signed up to join in on the fun!

Into the Past: Celebrating History, Fellowship and Faith at St. Therese School By: Jennifer Much Inside a well-known brick building nestled on Wisconsin Avenue, are 36,000 square feet of history and memories. While it is now set to be demolished, St. Therese School will always be an iconic treasure to the community and its 3,600 alumni. In August, alumni were invited to once again walk the halls, explore the classrooms and reminisce with former classmates. Stories were exchanged and boisterous laughs filled the rooms as individuals gathered to pay tribute to their school. Following self-guided tours, the group came together in fellowship and faith for a Mass in the school's honor. A Humbling History From 1928-1984, St. Therese School warmly welcomed thousands of children, teachers, parents, clergy and volunteers. The land on which it rests was purchased in the summer of 1923 for $15,000, a considerable amount for the time, and ground was broken for the building in April of 1927. The two-story building, constructed of limestone walls and red bricks, was crafted in a Neogothic Revival-style architecture. The church was located on the first floor, and on the second was a collection of six classrooms. Originally, a new rectory was built and in 1953 the building layout expanded, providing eight additional classrooms. While a majority of the founding families stemmed from German heritage, the school welcomed parishioners of all backgrounds during its fifty-six year run, an encouraging practice that continues now with the church. The school once went up to eighth grade, employing teachers from the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity in Manitowoc, of whom alumni express fond memories. In 1984, the school closed following an unfortunate decline in enrollment and a continual spike in operating costs.

Cherishing Unforgettable Memories For former students, there is no shortage of happy memories. Alumna Jill Nagel recalled a favorite of her own: recess. “I remember playing Red Rover,” said Nagel, “but mostly when we were allowed on the boys' side, we played marbles," she said, adding that they used beautiful cat eye marbles and silver colored steelies. At the time, the playground designated separate areas for boys and girls. “Depending on who was the nun or teacher out there, sometimes they let us mingle,” said Nagel. In addition to getting to know her peers, Nagel also appreciated her educators. “Sister Karen and Mrs. Rossmeissl were so kind to me when my dad was sick, '' Nagel said. Through her years at the school, Nagel also developed many close friendships. “Although we don’t see each other much, many of us are still friends today,” she said. Alumna Mary Dexheimer Ellenbecker also found companionship amongst her classmates. “Friends that I met at St. Therese are still friends 50+ years later, “ said Ellenbecker. In addition to friendship, Ellenbecker found a solid foundation for her faith. “For many years we attended Mass every day” she said, “our priests and nuns were our guidance to be Christ-like.” Ellenbecker remembers the endless encouragement to respect her elders, follow instructions, and learn self-discipline. “We looked forward to receiving all the sacraments available to us,” said Ellenbecker, “I believe I am a better Christian because of my eight years at St. Therese.” Looking back, Ellenbecker talked about donning a dress each day, noting that St. Therese was the only Catholic school without uniforms. There were also recollections of special field trips, and receiving tuberculosis tests and shots in school - a true mark of a different time. Even more, she reflected on singing in choir. "In 8th grade, we finally were in the choir loft in church and got to sing for midnight Mass on Christmas Eve" said Ellenbecker, "what an honor 14-years-old and so grown up."

Ellenbecker also had a unique connection to the school through her mother, Delores Dexheimer. Dexheimer was a well-known assistant cook when the cafeteria opened in the 1960's. "Mom eventually became head cook and ran that kitchen for many years," said Ellenbecker. Dexheimer was admired by many for her role as a lunch lady. Back then, lunches were 35¢ a day or $1.50 for the week. Beyond cooking for weddings, funerals and banquets, Dexheimer helped whip up the famous St. Therese Spanish hamburgers, also known as "Sloppy Joes" for church picnics. "Sloppy Joes were also devoured at home, although we called them Spanish hamburgers" said Ellenbecker. "Lots of sandwiches could be made from a pound or two of hamburger and it went a long way to feed the large Catholic families." Former student Laura (Kostelnik) Biskupic '82 also had sweet moments at St. Therese. “My favorite memories are the cream puffs and the people I met, especially Mrs.Rossmeissl, my second grade teacher, who later became principal," said Biskupic. Biskupic also enjoyed gym class with Mrs. Radtke and even more, looked forward to Saturday basketball games when the gym smelled like popcorn. Families and students even enjoyed activities outside of school and special events. "We used to have extravagant Oktoberfest celebrations," said Biskupic, "carnival rides like the Tilt-A-Whirl were tucked into the corner of a parking lot that became a regular midway for the weekend." What the Future Holds While the building will no longer be present, the memories it brought will remain forever. Historical photographs, records, and stories will also be displayed in the history room in the new building on the grounds. There are also multiple online outlets available to reconnect with the defunct school. A virtual scrapbook is available on the St. Therese website, www.st-thereseschool.com. There, visitors can browse class lists, peek at attendance records, read newspaper scans and reminisce over old photographs. A page dedicated to St. Therese alumni can also be found on social media, giving individuals another opportunity to converse with former classmates and their families.

"I still have this photo," Ellenbecker said of a black and white photograph taken at a 1964 school picnic. The photo shows Ellenbecker smiling alongside Mrs. Griesbach, Vicki Krabbe, Gail Upton, and Mary Heiss, "I have great, great memories of those friends and teachers."

We will work with you to gather the required documentation and make sure that your gift is directed to those areas that you have the greatest passion to support and enhance. • Endowments for faculty and staff salaries and benefits to ensure that we can maintain the highest quality academics and faith development, in addition to rewarding our system's greatest asset. • Endowments to fund technology and academics and keep Xavier a leader in developing a quality work force and providing students the tools they need to be successful in our ever-changing world. • Funds to cover the cost of capital expenses and deferred maintenance in order to keep our facilities safe, up-to-date, and allow budgeted dollars to be directed toward student development. • Unrestricted funds that allow Xavier to provide for the areas of greatest need.

There really is no single way. The approach you choose will depend on many factors, such as your goals and objectives, family situation, and stage in life. For example, you can: • Make a single, lump sum or series of gifts during your lifetime. • Make a gift that provides income for yourself or a loved one now, and then benefits Xavier in the future. • Make a gift that takes effect after your death. This can be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of, or remainder from your will, trust or other asset such as your retirement fund, investment account or insurance policy. 32

FACULTY AND STAFF RETIREMENTS The following faculty and staff combine for an astonishing 250 years of Xavier experience! You have impacted thousands within the Xavier family and we wish each of you blessings on your well-deserved retirement.

Pat (Bleier) Rechner ‘66 15 Years, XES Learning Advocate

As I reflect on my years at the McDonald and Marquette campuses, 11 years as a classroom teacher and 15 years in the Learning Service Dept., I have many things for which to be grateful. I would like to thank my colleagues whose dedication, sense of humor, and friendship always helped to meet the challenges of the day. Thank you to parents for their understanding and support. A big thank you goes to my students who taught me how to be a better teacher.

Ginny Suechting

25 Years, XHS AP Biology Teacher My favorite memories are the many

colleagues who taught me so much about the art of teaching. Among the group, Dennis Oudenhoven was a really important mentor and taught me how to effectively evaluate student work while simultaneously encouraging them. He understood the true art of grading. I have loved Xavier because of the connections with my students and the extended connections with their families. It allowed me to develop course work and techniques that students have carried with them to college and graduate school. I am so grateful to Xavier for my years of service.

I’m grateful to Xavier for giving me opportunities to grow as a person and a professional. “Often when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re at the beginning of something else” Fred Rodgers

Ann McKnight 23 Years, XHS Theology Teacher

Blessings to all!

Julie Guzman 20 Years, XES Marquette St Learning Services Teacher The Xavier system was a place I was grateful God guided me to over 20 years ago—after years of being a stay at home Mom. It was a safe place in so many ways— to express and grow in one’s faith, a place of support professionally and personally, a special work family. Thank you to my co-workers and all of the students and parents I was so blessed to meet! You have enriched me in countless ways. May God bless you all!

My favorite Xavier memory is teaching alongside both my sons. Ian ‘05 was hired as the middle school band director and we went to Winter Camp as teachers. Connor ’03 taught senior English with Denny Oudenhoven down the hall from my room. We always referred to each other as Mr. McKnight and Mrs. McKnight! When I began at the high school, I was part-time, but I stayed for lunch because the teachers' “second lunch” was so much fun. I usually left laughing. I'll never forget the shock and blessing of being the class of 2011 commencement speaker, or, in 2016 when the Cubs won the World Series and I got to celebrate in Brewer country! All the Kairos retreats with the students and teachers. So many laughs and Spirit moments. My advice for the Xavier community is to be a child of God first and have fun with the life you have been given. Don’t waste time or energy on impressing anyone but God.

Kathy (Hansen) Bates '71 45 years , XHS Athletic Director Xavier High School has truly been my “home away from home”, as I have probably spent more time at the high school in the last 45 years (49 if you add my high school years here!) than I have at my own home! At this ‘home’ was a large welcoming, loving family of colleagues. In all my roles as teacher, coach, dean of students, and athletic director, I have been sincerely blessed to work in a career I loved and especially to work with amazing people. Although I will sincerely miss daily interactions with students, student athletes, coaches, and friends, I do look forward to a more leisurely lifestyle that will open more opportunities for family time, travel, and volunteerism. I am grateful for the support and love I have received from this Xavier community. I look forward to cheering on the academic, artistic and athletic achievements this school will continue to provide. “Once a Hawk, always a Hawk!”

Katy Masak 20 Years, XES McDonald St 4th Grade Teacher God had a plan for me, and I am forever grateful that He chose Catholic education as my vocation. From the first year that I walked into my classroom, my coworkers and the school families made me feel at home. The sense of community, pride in their faith, love of Catholic education, concern for one another, support, and uplifting atmosphere made coming into school each morning a joy. One never knew what the day might bring, but that was part of the excitement of the job. I miss the excitement that each school day brought and think of you all often. A year ago God had another plan for me. I wasn’t sure I was ready for His new plan. But I listened to Him and am now available to support my nephews after the sudden passing of their mom. It has been a challenging year all around. I thank God for the support of my school family, my real family and my friends. I miss you all dearly and enjoy every opportunity where we are able to bump into one another. May God bless you and keep you safe as you venture into the new chapters of your lives.

Debbie Mantzke 15 Years, XES Marquette St Secretary It truly has been a blessing and privilege to work at Xavier for 15 years! I loved my job and was surrounded by wonderful faculty/staff, parents and students! I treasure all of the memories and friendships. Xavier will always hold a very special place in my heart! Growing up, I attended St. Pius (now Xavier Elementary –Marquette Campus) and our three children all attended and graduated from the Xavier System. The Xavier Catholic School System is an extraordinary community! God bless each of you!

Sue Brellenthin 23 Years, XES McDonald St Instructional Aide Dear St. Francis Xavier Community, After 23 years as an Instructional Aide in the St. Francis Xavier Community, I have decided to retire. I have been so blessed to work with so many wonderful students, families and so many talented, dedicated and loving faculty and staff members. I have had the privilege of working with students in all grades from Pre-K through 5th grade, at the McDonald Street Campus, the Marquette Street Campus and at Catholic Central. Many of those years were spent in preschool. Xavier holds a very special place in my heart, I have been so blessed to have so many of these wonderful children in my life; they are all such special gifts. Someone told me many years ago, "Pick a job you love, and you'll never have to work a day in your life." That is what my time at Xavier has meant to me. I have been truly honored, humbled and blessed to have been a part of this Xavier Community for so many years. I honestly have received so much more than I have given. I am really looking forward to spending more time with our five grandchildren, both here in Appleton and in Boston, and my husband and I are looking forward to traveling. I thank you all very much for all your love, support and prayers over the years. Continued love and blessings to you all! St. Francis Xavier, pray for us!

Roy Clark

7 Years, 8th Grade Science Teacher & STEM Coordinator

12 Years, Office Aide and Scrip Coordinator

Dear Xavier Community, It was such a blessing to have had the opportunity to work with the amazing administration, staff, students, and their families over the past 7 years. Although I am enjoying my time in retirement, I miss seeing all of you very much. I will always cherish the 5 years I spent as the 8th Grade Science Teacher at Xavier Middle School. I loved seeing students get excited about science, especially when they would have Ah-Ha! moments when grasping science concepts. I recently ran into a former student who proudly shared that they could still remember the phases of the moon because they learned them in a fun and impactful way! My last two years as STEM Coordinator took me into the elementary classrooms to do STEM activities with the younger students. Thank you to the teachers at the elementary campuses who always welcomed me into your classrooms. I really enjoyed working with you and your students. I miss the energy of the students, and especially their hugs!

My time at Xavier was a great experience with such wonderful and friendly people. I never thought it was work but just enjoying another day with a great bunch of fellow staff, parents and students!

Liz VanHandel 17 Years, XHS Business Teacher Ms. Liz Van Handel has been a Business teacher and library / media specialist for the past 17 years at Xavier. She helped to develop curriculum, move the Library Media Center into a digital era, and bring business students to numerous competitions and conferences. Thank you to Ms. Van Handel for her service - we hope she finds retirement relaxing and fulfilling.

Thank you so much for the memorable journey! May God’s blessings be upon you all.

Chris Bohne

2 Years, XHS Facilities Advisor A word of advice that will pay great dividends throughout your life is: respect and take care of the lowest ranking people in your organization. It is often they who you can least afford to be without. Listen to their suggestions, and explain why you want things done a certain way. A leader takes care of his/her people before taking care of self. Study servant leadership!

St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Annual Report

Dear Xavier Catholic Schools Family, What a year this has been for all of us! With the support of our faculty and staff who managed to adeptly meet the challenges presented by the COVID environment, families who partnered with us to ensure their sons and daughters received the quality faith-filled education expected at Xavier, students who remained flexible and committed to learning, and our alumni and friends whose generosity helped guide us through our challenges, we proudly stand together as we present our annual report.

Xavier Board of Trustees 2020-2021

Brian Wierzbinski | CHAIR Eric Kessenich | VICE CHAIR Daniel Aragon | TREASURER Jan Fuller | SECRETARY Deacon Tony Abts Yvette Dunlap Arist Mastorides Phil Riley Mike Steers Diane Walters

I invite you to take a few minutes to page through this magazine and see the many names on each page. Names that you may or may not recognize as fellow parents, alumni, colleagues…all individuals who generously have made a positive impact on others. Through their support, we are able to ensure that both current and future students have access to the educational excellence and rich experiences that define Xavier. Personally, as I look back on the year and the incredible outpouring of support, I am reminded of the Prayer of Oscar Romero and the impact the giving of each gift has on each of our students. With each donation, you plant the seeds that one day will grow. You water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. You lay foundations that Xavier will further develop and you provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities. Please accept our heartfelt gratitude for making our Xavier students your philanthropic priority and our year so successful. May God continue to bless each of you and our Xavier family. Live Jesus in our Hearts… Forever,

Bob Biebel Vice President of Advancement 38

St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation Report Dear Friends, It has been an honor to serve as the President of the St. Francis Catholic School System Foundation for the past two years as well as serving on the Foundation Board of Directors since 2015. Despite the many challenges our COVID environment placed in the path of our loved ones and our community, I am proud to say that this was a truly successful year for Xavier as demonstrated by our annual report. Foundation Board of Directors 2020-2021

Matt Vanden Heuvel | PRESIDENT Bob Ellis | VICE PRESIDENT Josh Hermus ‘99 | TREASURER Mark Birschbach '95

Each of you should also take pride in knowing that for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, the Foundation received gifts totaling $706,180, and ended that period with assets of over $9,000,000. In addition, our hearts are filled with gratitude to our generous and impactful donors and for each gift that made a difference to others. Because of your willingness to share, the Foundation was able to provide over $645,000 to the Xavier Catholic School System. These dollars made an impact in scholarships and tuition assistance, fine arts, athletics, capital improvements, and faculty and staff support.

Susanne Lumsden

As I conclude my time as President and on the Board, I do so knowing that the Foundation will not stand still. Under the strong leadership of new President Bob Ellis, they will continue to meet the challenges and opportunities that they face in the years ahead. It has been a blessing to be a part of this group and most importantly, to serve the Xavier Community. Thank you for your partnership and allowing us to carry out our mission and vision.

Keri McCormick

Sincerely,

Mike Dietz Dan Ferris ‘79 Fr. Jim Leary

The Xavier Catholic Schools Foundation adds new scholarships Remembering J. Joseph and Rosemary Cummings The Cummings family has established an endowed scholarship fund to honor their parents. The J. Joseph and Rosemary Cummings Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide tuition assistance for students attending Xavier Catholic Schools and continue the legacy of education and literacy. Rosie met Joe at Marquette and moved to Racine where he started a law practice before moving to Appleton, where they raised eight children. The Cummings were married for 36 years before Joe passed away in 1990. Rosemary was a former teacher at St. Bernadette and St. Mary’s in Kaukauna who loved children and inspired a generation of students to love reading. She passed away on August 2, 2021 at the age of 90. Xavier asks you to remember the Cummings family in your thoughts and prayers and donations to the Fund can be made to the St. Francis Xavier Foundation.

Xavier Honors a Legend with the Kathy Bates Athletics Fund After a lifetime of service to Xavier High School, Kathy Bates ’71 retired this past summer ending a career that started 45 years ago. In 1976, she began a 17-year tenure as an English teacher before becoming the Athletic Director in 1992. A long-time coach, Kathy was the varsity girls’ volleyball coach for 14 years, head girls’ track & field coach for four years and assistant for 29 years. For 25 years she was especially well known to the student body as the Xavier Dean of Students, a position that began in 1993. The Xavier community wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Kathy for her dedication and leadership and the impact she had on countless students and student-athletes. As a tribute to her dedicated service, the Xavier Catholic Schools Foundation has established a spend-down fund in her name. “The Kathy Bates Athletics Fund” will provide support for the Xavier Athletic Department. Best wishes to Kathy and her husband, Mike '71, for a joyous and relaxing retirement.

Mike Pfefferle Memorial Fund

The Xavier community mourns the loss of Mike Pfefferle ’89, a loyal and lifetime friend of Xavier. Surrounded by his loving family, Mike passed away on July 4, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mike’s love of life and devotion to his family were evident in all aspects of a life centered on faith, family, and friends. He leaves behind a loving wife, Lydie, sons Charlie '22 and Sam '24, and daughter Chloe '26. The President of Pfefferle Companies, Mike was known for the respect and dignity he gave to employees and all whom he worked with throughout the years. His charitable and volunteer works were many and his generosity was known throughout the Fox Cities Community and especially at Xavier. Sports, fishing, and Marquette basketball were among his many passions and whether it was coaching hoops, fishing with family and friends, or enjoying on evening with his Golden Eagles, his bright smile and love for life made for many special moments. Please join the entire Xavier community in keeping his immediate family, along with his parents John and Lynn, sisters Amy '91 and Anne '87, and all his many relatives, in your thoughts and prayers. We were truly blessed to share so many special moments together. A memorial fund in his name has been established to benefit Xavier and continue his legacy. xaviercatholicschools.org 59

Roll Call: Xavier Student Finds a Sweet Way to Make a Worldly Difference By: Jennifer Much Many say that the fastest way to the heart is through the stomach and seventh grade Xavier student Aaron Vanden Heuvel '27 can share a dozen reasons why that's true. Through selling delicious home baked treats, known as Yum Yum Rolls, Vanden Heuvel mixes sticky and sweet caramel goodness with charitable efforts, and the result is a praise-worthy recipe for kindness, service and compassion that reaches across the globe.

A Dream on the Rise Much like with sweet rolls, Vanden Heuvel’s entrepreneurial calling rose gradually. He could not have guessed that his ambition, a school lesson, and a cherished family recipe, would soon come together to help shape the lives of individuals thousands of miles away in Northeast Africa. In his sixth grade literature class, Vanden Heuvel began reading “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Parks. The book highlighted the grim reality of poor water conditions in South Sudan. Many children, especially girls, were unable to attend school because of their responsibility to collect water for their families. Doing so required them to walk over eight hours a day, and basic necessities far exceeded their opportunity to get an education. “Aaron is a very kind and compassionate person,” said Vanden Heuvel’s mother, Michele Hepfler, “this really pulled at his heart strings.” At the same time, Vanden Heuvel faced a disheartening struggle of his own when his grandmother passed away. To pay tribute to her, he baked a batch of her iconic caramel rolls and placed one on her casket to send it with her to heaven. Hepfler has shared an image of the gooey baked goods on social media, and soon orders were rolling in. “We realized we may have an avenue for Aaron to raise money for charity,” said Hepfler, “he instantly said his goal was to raise funds to purchase a new water well.” It’s clear that the driving force behind the endeavor was not just grandma’s famed recipe, but a strong commitment to help the less fortunate. “My faith and Xavier education really taught me that I should help these villages,” said Vanden Heuvel. Vanden Heuvel hopes to raise $15,000, a commitment that may take him to his

Aaron baking in his grandma’s kitchen senior year to achieve, and his parents are proud. “My husband and I are thrilled that Aaron found a way that he could raise money for something about which he felt strongly” said Hepfler. Soon, Yum Yum Rolls were hot out of the oven.

A Lesson in Gratitude Raising funds for the well in South Sudan has become an important undertaking for Vanden Heuvel. Even more, it has transformed into a valuable lesson in self-discipline, business principles and gratitude. “Aaron’s faith shines through in so many aspects” said Hepfler. “First, as Jesus teaches us to love your brother as yourself - wanting to make a difference in South Sudan, and second, by showing gratitude for all donations - big and small, and acknowledging God’s blessings” added Hepfler. Those who order a dozen or two can also appreciate each tasty bite while supporting an endearing cause. Vanden Heuvel also expresses gratitude toward his family, who has worked alongside him over the past year. Together, the family has made 150 dozen Yum Yum Rolls, and each person plays an important role in the project. Aaron, the head baker, makes the dough and bakes the rolls to perfection, his sister, Eve '21, and brother, John '24, help fold boxes and promote the product, and his parents help make the caramel and handle accounting and marketing. While making the rolls is a process that involves time, patience and care, Vanden Heuvel’s determination shines. As a further extension of gratitude, international students have also helped Vanden Heuvel. The family routinely hosts the students, who volunteer their time to help package the rolls. Interestingly, the name behind the brand was also inspired from afar. A student from Switzerland once nicknamed Vanden Heuvel “Yum Yum” and the name stuck!

Support by the Dozens Along with making the rolls comes the excitement of making a difference. “Aaron gets so excited when he has orders come in and sees donations come through,” said Hepfler, “he likes meeting all the customers!” Vanden Heuvel hopes to reach his monetary goal by 2027 and plans to do so with hard work and by whipping up dozens of delicious treats. He also plans to expand social media efforts and asks that customers post photos of themselves enjoying their Yum Yum Rolls. Many businesses in the community have placed orders, including multiple fire and police stations in the Fox Valley area as well as countless individuals and families. “This project can be supported in two different ways,” explained Vanden Heuvel. “If you live in Appleton, Green Bay or the Oshkosh area you can order and purchase Yum Yum Rolls directly.” When orders come in on Fridays, Vanden Heuvel spends each weekend preparing and bakes on Sundays so they’re fresh!. Alternatively, donations can be made directly to Water for South Sudan by using Aaron’s personal link: www.classy.org/fundraiser/3170069.

The Yum Yum Rolls are perfect for every event, office meeting and for family night dessert. They also make a great gift that is partnered with an amazing cause and a young entrepreneur's selfless drive to better the life of others. The rolls are made year round and the team celebrates National Cinnamon Roll Day (October 4th) and World Water Day (March 22nd) by donating 100% of Yum Yum Roll sales to Water for South Sudan. When he’s not busy rolling out orders or collecting donations, Vanden Heuvel looks forward to one extra special aspect of his project and shares it with enthusiasm: “eating any leftovers!” Simply irresistible!
